OPINION

n the months leading up to our new Summer issue, we’ve seen some weird and wonderful trends emerging on the heels of the coronavirus outbreak. One disturbing trend has been the increased censorship of alternative views on prevention and treatment of COVID-19. In spite of evidence that specific vitamins, herbs, and minerals can help people keep well during a pandemic, still the powersthat-be want to keep this information under wraps. (Even Vitality has seen videos by alternative medicine experts deleted from our Facebook page.) To shine more light on the issue, we bring you opinion pieces from two reputable sources: 1) OMNS Editor Andrew Saul reveals how certain videos made by radical Chinese doctors to discuss their success using IV vitamin C against COVID were repeatedly deleted from YouTube; 2) Lawyer Shawn Buckley discusses a new report that the Trudeau government is planning to enact censorship laws to prevent “misinformation” about COVID-19. Meantime, the lockdown has had a big impact on health and wellness practitioners. From RMTs to acupuncturists to reflexologists, everyone had to close their doors as clients waited in pain and isolation for the lockdown to end. Then there were the psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, and other counsellors and teachers unable to reach out to their clients in crisis. Thankfully the lockdown is starting to lift now. Another sector hit hard was the food supply chain. With viral outbreaks reported in meat processing facilities across the country, thousands of animals had to be culled or euthanized. And the cruelty involved with factory farmed animals was brought into the spotlight. One positive outcome of this has been increased public interest in alternative plant-based sources of protein that are eco-friendly and cruelty-free. To help readers navigate this shift, we offer an article on how to Get Stronger This Summer – with Nourishing Meals Rich in 4

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2020

Plant-based Proteins. It includes tried and true recipes by famous nutritionist Julie Daniluk and food writer Linda Gabris. Our local organic food industry was also hit hard by the coronavirus. That’s why we felt it was important to check in with the farms, markets, and organic outlets in our network to see how they’ve fared during the pandemic, and to ask what their businesses will look like going forward. You will find the results published in this issue’s Guide to Organics, a great little directory of local resources. The Guide will continue to evolve on our website for the rest of the year as outlets are added or updated. Overall, these organic farmers and vendors are a sturdy bunch, and their future looks bright since consumers have come to appreciate clean food as a key part of wellness. Speaking of which, it looks like the recent global threat to our health and safety has caused people to embrace wellness like never before. According to Beth McGroarty of the Global Wellness Institute, “The silver lining in all of this is – it brings a lot more focus to health and wellness.” And Forbes magazine published a feature that proclaimed: “Luxury Brands, Get Ready: Wellbeing Will Emerge As A Huge Trend After Coronavirus.” On that note, this month we bring you Dr. Zoltan Rona’s piece entitled: After the Outbreak – Looking Forward to a Healthier Future which explores strategies and supplements that can help repair the mental and physical damage caused by the lockdown, and get us on the road to optimal wellbeing. To see more of Vitality’s excellent COVID-related features published in recent weeks, take a look at our April and May newsletters (see page 45 for tips on how to get your hands on those). Regarding the big picture, I have to wonder what lies ahead. So I’d like to leave you with the words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as shared by Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope – A Guide to Sacred Activism: “Humanity is in danger of extinction. Prepare for the very worst. And then work tirelessly with compassion and joy for the very best.” Meantime, have a terrific summer. We’ll see you in September with our Fall issue if the gods are willing. Julia Woodford

CENSORSHIP LAW AND COVID-19 ~ Discussion Paper by Shawn Buckley, LLB “We are sad to report that ‘truth’ is not expected to survive COVID-19.” On April 15, 2020, the Toronto Sun reported that the Trudeau Government is planning to enact censorship laws to prevent “misinformation” about COVID-19.[1] NDP MP Charlie Angus is quoted as supporting the measure, signaling that “protecting” you from freedom of speech may be broadly supported in Parliament. The problem with censorship law is that it’s the government which gets to decide what ‘truth’ you will be allowed to access. There is not yet draft legislation for us to comment on, but the proposal is very concerning. Censorship and a free society cannot co-exist. It is as simple as that. If you want to remain at least partially free, you must resist this initiative. When this proposal gains momentum, we will be given persuasive arguments – “there are ‘scam artists’ pedaling fake cures,” and “there are ‘conspiracy theorists’ pedaling fake news”. In short, you will be told why you need to be protected by the government. The fear and outrage will be so great that you will be focussed on it, so that you do not ask important questions like: – Are Canadians really so stupid that they cannot be trusted to make reasonable choices? – Is this really a problem? We always have diverse views that we sort through – is this so different? – Am I really so stupid that I need the government to decide what I can be exposed to? – Can I actually trust the government to decide what I am told? Censorship is the government deciding what information you can have access to. Censorship never ends well. Freedom in Exchange for Vaccination

We are in an unprecedented situation where we are effectively imprisoned in our own homes and the justification for the lockdown has already changed. We were first told this was necessary so that we could flatten the curve of infections. Now, a second theme has been introduced, that restrictions of one sort or another will stay until a vaccine is ready. We are, in effect, being told that our freedoms may be restricted until we are all vaccinated. For greater clarity, our freedoms have never in our lives been so restricted, and the narrative to explain “why” is changing. It does not matter whether you agree or disagree with the restrictions on our freedoms. You must pay close attention to the mainstream media narratives to identify any agendas that are present (whether benign or not). 8

Fake News and Manipulation of Public Opinion

It has never been more important for you to pay attention to what is happening. So, here we are: • Your freedom is being restricted like it never has been before, and • The government wants to control the information you receive while restricting your freedom. How is this different than what police states do? So it is with some irony that on April 15, 2020, our government broadcaster, CBC, ran a story telling kids how to shut down “conspiracy theories” voiced by adults: https://tinyurl.com/cbconmisinformation In this strange piece the reporter actually says: “conspiracies can be just as infectious, just as dangerous, as a virus.” The example given of a conspiracy is the suggestion that the novel coronavirus was created by China in a lab. This is an interesting example, as why would it matter if people believed the virus came from a lab as opposed to being naturally occurring? Surely our belief about the origin of the virus does not change whether or not we should stay in our homes to avoid it. It is also an interesting example, as it may be wrong. I have not researched this issue, but in just checking news for myself have run across suggestions that there is a legitimate debate. For example, Fox News reported on April 15 that U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said the U.S. government is trying to figure out if the virus did come from a Chinese lab (see https://ww w.foxnews.com/politics/coronavirus-wuhan-lab-china-compete-us-sources). Similarly, I came across a story reporting that Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Luc Montagnier, claims the virus was man-made (see https://www.gilmorehealth.com/chinese-coronavirus-is-a-man-made-virus-according-to-lucmontagnier-the-man-who-discovered-hiv/). I am not offering an opinion on whether the virus was man-made or naturally occurring. I am offering the opinion that there appears to be a rational debate about this. I remember watching what I think was CNN, in October 1990, where a story was aired about soldiers from Iraq throwing babies out of incubators in Kuwait and leaving them to die on the floor. I was incensed and wanted something done. The story turned out to be fake news, peddled on mainstream news networks to manipulate public opinion to support the first Gulf War. I also remember becoming very concerned about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction peddled on the mainstream news prior to the second Iraq War for the same purpose. This was also fake news. Both fake stories worked, and many of us supported wars that have killed large numbers of innocent people. Shame on us, as we are complicit in those deaths. Soon you will be intimidated into supporting government censorship, all for your safety and the safety of your loved ones. Of course, anyone from the former Soviet Union or 10

Communist China can tell you how safe we are when the government gets a monopoly on the truth. Taking Action to Prevent Coronavirus Censorship

Although there is not yet an actual Bill before Parliament, we need to let MPs in all parties know that we are not going to support this censorship. I am asking each of you to: • Call your local MP and demand a phone meeting. Tell them you don’t support any type of government censorship. You can find their contact information here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Members/en • Call the Prime Minister’s Office at both 613-995-0253 and 514-277-6020. You likely will have to settle for speaking to staff, but they will be listening. (Email: justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca) • Call Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer at both 613992-4593 and 306-332-2575 • Call NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh at both 613-947-0867 and 604-291-8863 • Call Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet at 613-992-6035 and 450-658-0088 • Write a letter to your MP and each party leader. You can also email, but email is not the same as a letter, and letters are taken more seriously. I would like to leave you with one of my favourite quotes, because it drives home the point that if we do not take personal responsibility for protecting our rights we will lose them. “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.” - Frederick Douglass (1818 - 1895), author, former slave Reference: [1] The article can be found here: https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/furey-feds-planning-laws-against-covid-19-misinformation-is-ultimate-irony Author bio: Shawn Buckley is a lawyer and the president of the Natural Health Products Protection Association (NHPPA). Get Stronger This Summer with Nourishing Meals Rich in Plant-based Proteins ~ by JULIA WOODFORD

All of them have a long shelf life if stored in a cool, dry place. So in the event of food supply disruptions and power outages they can be used as solid dietary staples (in a pinch, just add water and cook them over a campfire). And they travel well, so you can easily take beans and grains to the cottage for protein-rich country dinners (easier than hauling a side of beef). The following recipes are high in plant-based protein and are well suited to easy summer prepping and dining.

Healing Salad in a Jar This protein-packed recipe, which contains both quinoa and This “Healing Salad in a Jar” is Benefits of black beans, is from the book by by Julie Daniluk, RHN, author of Plant-Based Protein Julie Daniluk, RHN, entitled “Slimming Meals That Heal” Slimming Meals That Heal: Lose Protein is critical for keeping the body strong and the immune system optimized. n recent months, the outbreaks of coronavirus in slaughterhouses and food processing plants across Canada have caused people to think twice about their consumption of meat. According to David GeorgeCosh of the Business News Network, “Products that use soy or peas to replicate the taste and texture of meat are seeing a surge in sales as Canadians snap up new protein sources amid concerns that meat selection will become strained due to virus outbreaks at major processing facilities.”[1] In fact, sales of tofu and meat alternatives have risen 52% over the past year in Canada, according to analytics firm Nielsen.

dressing into bottom of each jar, then add onions, beans, and apples so they can marinate. Add carrots, walnuts, quinoa as the middle layers. At the very top, add spinach or arugula. Shake well just before serving to coat ingredients.

Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 Tbsp unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsp water 1 tsp basil, dried
2 Tbsp honey 1/4 tsp pink rock salt or gray sea salt
2 cloves garlic, roasted or 1 clove raw garlic, crushed Place all ingredients into in a blender and blend for about 30 seconds. Use immediately or store in a jar for one to two weeks. Red Pepper Lentil Salad This recipe is also by Julie Daniluk, tucked in an article on Vitality’s website entitled: Fabulous Fibre: Foods That Create Fullness and Fight Fat.[4] The recipe calls for two kinds of plant-based protein (lentils and hemp seeds), so you can expect steady long-lasting energy from this vitamin- and mineral-charged dish. Lentils boast 8 grams of fibre per 1/2 cup serving. Much of this fibre is soluble and helps to stabilize blood sugar. Salad: 1 cup red pepper, julienned (matchstick-size pieces) 19 oz (540 mL) can green lentils, rinsed and drained 1/4 cup hemp seeds 1/2 cup fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped Dressing: 1/3 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1 tsp dijon mustard 2 tsp dried oregano Sea salt to taste Directions: 1) Mix all dressing ingredients in a bowl. 2) Place all salad ingredients in a separate bowl and top with dressing. Mix well and taste to adjust seasoning. 3) The flavour improves as the salad marinates, so you can make it ahead (and refrigerate for up to three days.) Red Lentil Humus Don’t leave your hummus stuck in a rut – try this unusual interpretation from The Organic Gourmet Feast of Fields cookbook. Glazed Vegetable Lentil Loaf This recipe by long-time food writer Linda Gabris comes from her feature entitled Marvellous Meatless Meals located in the Vitality archives.[5] Says Linda: “Introducing meat-lovers to meatless meals is easy with this tasty loaf which comes out of the oven oozing with a mouthwatering glaze. This dish goes great with fermented beets, a green salad, and a crispy roll on the side. Leftover slices can be sprinkled with flour and fried in olive oil until brown and crispy…every bit as good the second time around!”

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2020

Glazed Vegetable Lentil Loaf is as hearty and satisfying as classic meat loaf 1-1/2 cups dry green (or brown) lentils 3 cups vegetable stock or water 4 Tbsp ground flaxseed 1/2 cup water 3 Tbsp olive oil 2 chopped onions 4 cloves minced garlic 1 minced sweet pepper 1 diced jalapeno pepper (optional) 1 stick minced celery 3 grated carrots 1/2 teaspoon each of ground cumin and coriander Pinch of thyme and basil Sea salt and pepper to taste 1 egg (optional, for those who want a firmer loaf) Directions: 1) Wash lentils under cold running water and put them into a large saucepan; add stock or water and bring to a

boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 35 to 45 minutes, or until mushy and liquid is mostly evaporated, stirring frequently to ensure lentils have not boiled dry. 2) Remove from heat, let stand until cool at which time the lentils should be very thick. 3) In a bowl, combine ground flaxseed with water. Let stand 10 minutes. If you like a more delicate loaf you can skip this step but if you fancy a firmer texture this makes a good binder. Set aside. 4) Heat olive oil in a skillet and sauté onions, garlic, peppers, celery, and carrots until soft. Sprinkle in the spices, herbs, sea salt, and pepper. 5) Mix the flaxseed and the vegetables into the lentils, add the egg, and mix well. The mixture should have a ‘meat loaf’ consistency. If you find it is not stiff enough you can add some seasoned wholewheat bread or cracker crumbs for extra binding power. Set aside. 6) Grease a 10” x 5” x 3” loaf pan with coconut or olive oil, and pack loaf mixture into pan. Spread with the glaze (recipe here), and

ow that the pandemic is mostly under control in Canada, many of us will keep practising social distancing while wearing masks, using sanitizers, and frequently washing our hands. Further, it’s estimated that at least 72% of us will opt for COVID-19 vaccinations when the vaccine becomes available. In my view, the most While I wouldn’t dissuade important nutrients for anyone from following the the recovery phase of recommended government this pandemic are guidelines for preventing vitamin D, vitamin C, COVID-19 infections, there zinc, probiotics, and is much more that can be adaptogenic herbs done to help both body and mind recover after the lockdown. Based on a great deal of scientific evidence, along with my clinical experience during 42 years of medical practice, what follows here is my recommended protocol that any healthy person between the ages of 12 – 100 can follow to get the most out of their immune system. Those who have chronic health conditions could also apply these same principles to help their recovery, with the approval of their doctors.

How Sugar Cripples the Immune System

There are many theories and regimens that have been advocated as the best diet to follow (paleo, vegan, ketogenic, Mediterranean, etc.), but the single most important factor that everyone agrees on is the avoidance of large amounts of sugar. Science has established as far back as 1973 that when we consume 100 grams of sugar from, for example, a litre bottle of pop or three candy bars, this reduces the ability of our white blood cells (neutrophils) to kill invading pathogens by at least 40%. This crippling effect on our immune system can last up to five hours. In addition, sugar consumption increases the number of pro-inflammatory free radicals produced by the white blood cells, called “reactive oxygen species”, that can cause all sorts of damage to body cells and tissues. www.vitalitymagazine.com

I see evidence of this amongst my patients year in and year out – especially after holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and Easter when sugar consumption is at its highest. That is also when the incidence of respiratory infections (pharyngitis, bronchitis, sinusitis), middle ear infections in children, and other immune system abnormalities are most prominent. These are also the times when mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and psychoses are at their worst. Abuse of alcohol and drugs is also more common during these times and it too has been linked to a high sugar intake. Also worthy of note, high sugar consumption has been linked to obesity – one of the most common factors that predisposes a person to viral infections. So, first and foremost, avoid high sugar use, especially if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic. If you are having trouble doing this, please read the book Lick the Sugar Habit by Nancy Appleton.

Immune-Boosting Probiotics

On the positive side, eat lots of daily probiotic and prebiotic foods. There are several mechanisms by which these foods help the immune system resist viral infections. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, pickles, tempeh, miso, natto, raw unpasteurized cheeses, kombucha, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk are great sources of friendly bacteria (probiotics). These help fight pathogenic microbes while improving digestion and providing our system with numerous enzymes and vital nutrients, including vitamin B12 and vitamin K2. The top probiotic strains that are backed by a high degree of evidence supporting their immune benefits include: • Bacillus coagulans • Bacillus subtilis • Bifidobacterium bifidum • Bacillus clausii • Lactobacillus plantarum • Lactobacillus fermentum • Lactobacillus reuteri • Lactobacillus acidophilus • Lactobacillus gasseri

• Lactobacillus rhamnosus • Lactobacillus sporogens • Saccharomyces boulardii

Zinc is a mineral that’s been much studied for its beneficial effect on immunity as well as mental health. Zinc lozenges were recently found to help both prevent and treat viral infections effectively.

To nourish your inner ecology in a way that aids the growth of probiotics, try eating more prebiotic foods because they enhance the benefits of friendly bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics include foods like dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichokes, leeks, chicory root, garlic, onions, jicama, under-ripe bananas, and asparagus. Both prebiotics and probiotics also reduce inflammation and help with weight loss and overall digestive, skin, cardiovascular, and mental health. In addition to food sources, prebiotics and probiotics can also be taken as supplements so this is another option.

Supplements

There are a great number of vitamin, mineral, herbal, amino acid and homeopathic supplements that have been recommended in this recovery phase of the pandemic. What I believe to be the most important of these – that you cannot live well without – are listed here.

VITAMIN D: Since many people have been spending a great deal of time indoors during the lockdown, they are surely not getting much vitamin D from sunshine exposure. The body cannot make vitamin D from sunshine that’s coming through a window because beneficial UVB rays are blocked by the iron component in windowpane glass. So the only way to get the UVB rays that promote vitamin D formation in the skin is through direct exposure to the sun (without sunscreen). Not only is vitamin D important for bone health but it has profound benefits for our immune system. If you can get out into sunshine every day for half an hour or more and expose your skin to sunshine without getting a sunburn, then you might not need any oral D supplementation. But if you can’t get into sunshine regularly, then do take a supplement of at least 2,000 IU daily. If you are lucky enough to have a doctor willing to check your blood level of vitamin D, and they find it to be low, a higher dose of 5 to 10,000 IU daily could be necessary. Don’t forget that vitamin D receptors exist in your brain and a deficiency has been linked to depression, seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, and numerous other mental health problems. Supplementation can be important here. A recent study showed that the most severe cases of COVID-19 infections were seen in people with vitamin Ddeficient blood. Vitamin D encourages the body to manufacture more of a protein called cathelicidin, a natural 30

antiviral antibiotic. Since vitamin D supplementation is generally regarded as safe, it’s a good idea for most folks living in the northern hemisphere to take it daily for prevention of viral infections and numerous other adverse health conditions. And remember that vitamin D is best taken together with vitamin K2 supplement. In fact, many companies selling vitamin D now offer it combined with a low dose of vitamin K2, usually 120 mcg for every 1000 IU of vitamin D. The reason for this is to prevent calcium from being deposited into arteries and organs like the kidney, in case the supplemented vitamin D amounts get too high in the blood.

ZINC: Zinc is a mineral that’s been much studied for its beneficial effect on immunity as well as mental health. ‘No zinc, no think.’ As a result, I believe it to be of profound importance in recovery from the stresses caused by this pandemic lockdown. Zinc lozenges were recently found to help both prevent and treat viral infections effectively. The dose I recommend is 25 – 50 mg daily for prevention, but much higher doses can be used when one is suffering from a cold or ’flu. High dose zinc supplementation for extended periods of time can deplete copper stores in the body leading to anemia and joint inflammation. So, for every 50 mg of zinc, supplementing with 8 mg of copper is a good idea to prevent copper deficiency caused by excessive zinc. Zinc is found in many animal and plant-based high protein foods. The list of these is below: • Lamb – 3 ounces contains 2.9 mg zinc • Grass-fed Beef – 3 ounces contains 2.6 mg zinc • Chickpeas – 1 cup cooked contains 2.5 mg zinc • Cashews – ¼ cup contains 1.9 mg zinc • Pumpkin seeds – ¼ cup contains 1.6 mg zinc • Yogurt (or Kefir) – 1 container of plain yogurt/6 ounces contains 1 mg zinc • Chicken – 3 ounces contains 1 mg zinc • Turkey – 3 ounces contains 1 mg zinc • Eggs – 1 large contains 0.6 mg zinc • Mushrooms – 1 cup contains 0.6 mg zinc

VITAMIN C: I have written extensively about vitamin C in past issues of this magazine, most recently in the Spring 2020 issue. Suffice it to say that many natural health authorities – from Linus Pauling to the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service – have strongly promoted it for enhancing immunity, clearing physical stress, and for preventing and treating viral infections of all kinds. Using 1,000 mgs, up to 4 times daily, is effective prevention for most heathy adults, but doses can be much higher for infections. You know if you are taking too much vitamin C because excess intake causes loose bowel movements or diarrhea. So, ideally take a bowel tolerance dose (and may you never be constipated ever again). You can get vitamin C from your diet by eating a variety of citrus fruits and raw vegetables every day. Supplementation, however, is most important for those not able to consume an ideal diet or who are suffering from chronic illness or weak digestion. MULTIVITAMIN & MINERAL SUPPLEMENT: For most people, a multivitamin and mineral supplement is a very good idea. A multi will at least provide the minimum daily requirement for nutrients missing from the diet. It will also balance the other nutrients taken in larger doses on a regular basis. Get one from a health food store. Avoid brands manufactured by pharmaceutical firms that contain numerous additives and potentially harmful ingredients. Check with a natural health care provider to advise on supplement quality. Be aware of the recent false accusations concerning the lack of effectiveness of multivitamins. These claims have been debunked by numerous experts and are best ignored.

Essential Exercise

According to HEALTHbeat, newsletter of the Harvard Medical School, one of the best ways to boost immunity is through regular exercise. With the onset of the warmer weather, getting outdoors for long walks or even some light jogging would be very beneficial, provided your joints are in reasonably good shape. Of course, there are numerous sports like tennis and golf that can be enjoyed by many. Otherwise, swimming or using a stationary bicycle might be better alternatives. Many find it useful to work with a personal trainer or just get some helpful tips from 32

your trusted local gym. There are also several other alternatives like Yoga and Tai Chi that have been advocated for their immune system benefits. The main thing is that you do something with movement on a regular basis.

Relieving Stress; Improving Sleep

Everything recommended in the protocol just described will be helpful in managing the stresses that may come your way in the coming months. Furthermore, meditation, massage therapy, life coaching, and psychotherapy are all effective at reducing your response to stress. Since stress primarily affects the endocrine system, especially the thyroid and adrenal glands, it’s a good idea to get your hormone levels tested. This could be done through either a medical doctor or naturopath. Herbal remedies called adaptogens that help stabilize the most important stress hormone (cortisol) include ginseng, ashwagandha, and rhodiola. The amino acid L-theanine (250 – 1000 mg up to 4 times daily as needed), which is derived from green tea, is calming but also something that allows one to focus better. It helps basically by increasing brain levels of the calming neurotransmitter GABA and by boosting brain alpha wave activity. It can be useful in helping relaxation as well as sleep without knocking you out like many drugs do. Also for improved sleep, consider using melatonin (1 to 3 mg before bed) on a regwww.vitalitymagazine.com

Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment Top 10 Ways to Arm Your Immune System Against Viral Epidemics BY DR. ZOLTAN P. RONA, MD, MSc.

T

he Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in January has caused worldwide fear, panic, and confusion. Fueled by nonstop media accounts of infection and death rates, quarantines of entire cities, and misleading propaganda to “get your ’flu shots” as a way of fighting the outbreak, the hysteria is building with each passing day. People are walking around wearing useless surgical face masks as if this offers some degree of protection. It does not, but could be of some value in preventing cameras from discovering your identity. Viruses are too small to be prevented from spreading by the surgical face masks that many folks are using. Medical authorities are urging us daily to wash our hands repeatedly to reduce the spread of viruses. Similar to the SARS epidemic of more than a decade ago, antibacterial soaps can be found in hospitals, doctor’s offices, banks, tennis clubs, gyms, grocery stores, and elsewhere. But they are toxic. I recommend that you avoid using these. Such products are quite toxic to the skin and put an added strain on the immune system. Antibacterial soaps contain triclosan and triclocarban, two ingredients recently exposed by the U.S. FDA as being neither safe or effective infection preventers. While it is wise to keep your hands clean, it’s best to use natural soaps, tea tree oil cleansers, or those containing neem, aloe, or oregano oil. And avoid people who are sick with the ’flu or other viral illnesses. Other than endorsing handwashing and the ‘flu vaccine, medical authorities have made no attempt to inform the public about safe and effective natural measures to both prevent and treat viral infections. From a dietary perspective, sugar, allergenic foods, and stress can feed microbes and spread disease. Instead, try to follow a high protein, sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free organic diet with copious amounts of raw vegetables. In 24

Dear Dr. Rona: Thanks very much for your excellent article. It will hopefully help people to be less afraid and feel more empowered in this climate of fear. I was particularly interested in the part on black seed oil. I have chronic asthma and will be happy to try out black seed oil to see if it helps. And I will recommend your coronavirus article to family and friends. H. Rae, Timmins, Ont. Dr. Rona responds: Many thanks for those very kind words. I think it’s important to spread the good word on treatments that are both safe and effective and that do not rely entirely on

the medical system. I’m hoping that conventional medicine adopts some of these natural treatments, especially the high dose IV vitamin C in hospitals because that can really save lives. Thank you again for your support. Dr. Zoltan Rona, MD

My Top 8 Ways to Keep Well During the Pandemic

https://vitalitymagazine.com /article/my-top-8-ways-to-keepwell-during-the-pandemic-andyou-can-too/

Dear Julia, I hope you are keeping healthy. I really liked your “Top 8 Ways to Keep Well During the Pandemic,” published in Vitality’s April newsletter. It contained some very simple tips to follow and I shared it with friends and colleagues. I also ordered the 35% hydrogen peroxide that you recommended as a disinfec-

tant from https://www. sproutmaster.com/ I am wondering about the correct dilution of hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting viruses from surfaces. Sproutmaster’s full strength HP is 35%. The recommendation is to use a 3% solution, but your article indicates that 20% is needed for surfaces or grocery bags. With this inconsistency in information, I wanted to ask if there is a source of information that I can access easily that juxtaposes the solution / surface / time needed after spraying to eliminate the virus. I wasn’t able to find it online... Lidija P., Newmarket Woodford responds: I sent your question to the folks at SproutMaster. Here’s their reply: “35% is way way too strong, it will burn anything that it comes in contact with – including your fingers. Please dilute it down to 3% for disinfecting surfaces, groceries, hands, and use that strength only.” As indicated in my article, the dilution is done by adding 11 parts distilled water to one part 35% full strength HP. 94-Year-Old Mom Survives Coronavirus Infection In regards to the article posted on Vitality’s Facebook page entitled: “Vitamin D and COVID-19: Can Taking Vitamin D Save Your Life?” which was shared from www.PsychologyToday.com, here is my response: It [vitamin D] was definitely part of what worked to get my 94-year-old mom to beat the SARScov2 infection in three days. www.vitalitymagazine.com

And in my view, a few dollars’ worth of supplements could have saved more of the overmedicated, tylenoltoxined, nutrient-deficient victims residing in local nursing homes, which would have lowered that awful 40% case fatality rate. My mom wasn’t just ‘lucky’ to recover from the coronavirus, it was on purpose. [In regards to her medical history] she didn’t have a ’flu shot and she was not given Tylenol for fever. But she did have antiviral immune-supportive supplements A, C, D, zinc and melatonin. Those were choices I made for her, based on scientific evidence of benefit against coronavirus infection. Meantime, our government censored Dr. Rona and Vitality for informing us of that evidence. Alice T., Toronto

his is the 24th year that I’ve had the pleasure to write a Summer Solstice column for ‘Sacred Journeys’ in Vitality. Apple blossoms are raining down in the gentle breeze as I type. I’m aware it is both a huge letting go, and a time of new beginnings, as I present my final offering. During the writing of my previous column (before Covid19 was on our radar) there was a voice in my head that was on fire with the energy of the year ahead, using the oft-repeated phrase ‘this is the year of change’. That voice now is clear and passionate about many things: – staying grounded; – declaring our sovereignty; – being attentive to our emotional triggers (and letting them go at source); – remaining calm as we are uprooted this summer and fall; – caring for our immune system; – monitoring our time spent on tech devices; – being mindful of conserving and consuming water. The intuitive message that I am hearing about grounding has been quite specific,

SACRED JOURNEYS Everyday Rituals & Celebrations WITH KIM ELKINGTON This past spring, I was inspired to dig up my overgrown flower beds and create tidy flower arrangements and a beautiful veggie garden. It was wonderful to get some healthy bacteria onto my overly sanitized hands. and I have seen the technique mirrored by many sources. The invitation is to connect, through each breath, to our heart, inhaling love. At first, you exhale anything that needs to be ‘out’ (like fear or tension), and when you feel clear, breathe out gratitude. Follow this by envisioning yourself as a larger being in the cosmos. Move from your heart to the source of the Universe (however you visualize that source). Next, breathe that light and intelligence into your heart, exhale into the central light at the core of our earth, then again inhale to your body, exhale to source, and repeat. From this place, your frequency will be very high, so it’s a good time to declare yourself a sovereign being (I can send you a meditation – see my email address at end). As a species, we have spent much of our time believing that we are small and separate from the source of life. Today, we are learning to understand we are all

One. By practising this orientation, we will be aware of how quickly we can identify and release those thoughts where we are attached, both consciously and unconsciously, to a smaller version of ourselves, and shift into being a co-creator. This is what is called for at this time. For June and July the astrologers have predicted that we are going to be shocked and challenged in new ways (as we move through ‘eclipse season’). And by the fall, we will be removing our energy from systems and institutions that have a service-to-self agenda, rather than service-tocommunity. The sense of uprootedness will be hard on some people and a relief for others, but the astrologers say we should be co-creating new systems by November. And by Spring of 2021, we will be amazed by the shifts we have made together. This past spring, I was inspired to dig up all my overgrown flower beds and create tidy, well-spaced flower arrangements, and a www.vitalitymagazine.com

beautiful, dedicated veggie garden. It was wonderful to get some healthy bacteria on my sanitized hands. More important was the practice of untangling, revealing, releasing and shifting my thoughts with each plant. As each plant was uprooted and carried to the next bed, I was aware of how the world is also uprooted, during these challenging Covid times, trying to discern what is real or true, and having to learn to trust that we will all land safely in a place that will be deeply nourishing. For me, there is a central calling to spend more time out on the land, to listen to this powerful voice that is finally reaching my technology-clogged ears. My heart now wants to expand the tea company with a new line of teas, in which local wild and indigenous plants are paired with green and black and chai teas. It feels right to help build our immune system naturally with plants that grow here. A Cree elder advised that when she gets exhausted from being in service, her elders would give her a cup of Blue Spruce Tip tea to restore her energy. She is so right, and it is delicious. Another elder from out West suggested adding the herb Horsetail to Chaga and Chai for stronger lungs and immunity. Rather than buy into the production model where there needs to be enough to supply demand, this new line of teas will have a finite amount produced each year, and when it runs out tea drinkers can pre-order for www.vitalitymagazine.com

more when it is fresh and available again. Green and sustainable economics is a heart path that cares for the plants, the water system, and the Earth, after all. Covid is the opportunity we all may have needed to focus on our immune system and on our wholeness and on our relationships with each other and the planet. The word from the Star beings is that the level of compassion on the Earth is dazzling. We are sailing through rough waters to an incredible version of the Earth that is already there waiting for us to rise to meet it. Grounding into the beauty, expressing our hearts, humour, compassion, love and grace unconditionally is all we need to do. I would love to stay connected to those of you who are drawn to do so, and share the pulse of what we are feeling, and further what we might be able to do together to co-create the world we seek. If you would like to stay in touch, the easiest is to sign up for the e-newsletter at my company site algonquintea.com/contact-us/ . Signing off, with my heart filled with gratitude to you for lending your ears, and with deep affection to Julia Woodford for her big heart and for being inspired to create Vitality and putting it out into the world for all these decades!

Summer 2020 Sun Sign Predictions

★★★ by Julie Simmons ★★★ Summer Overview: JUNE: Gossip is about who we listen to, from the chatter in our heads to the stories carried on the wind of friends and neighbours, not to mention the news media. Gossip is not a human failing. It’s a phenomenon. Who are your storytellers? What do you believe is true? JULY: You are reminded that you have or will have work to do again. We should think ahead to how it has changed and what it will take to do it. There are opportunities available now that don’t look like much but might be helpful later. AUGUST: The demands placed on you require a tremendous amount of focus. It’s not enough to bluster on just because you are convinced you are on the right track. It matters how you make the effort, what you do to strengthen the structures that underpin your life, even if you can’t guarantee they won’t be blown apart later. We are no longer strangers to chaos and unpredictability. CANCER: June 21 - July 21

JUNE: What you imagine is holding you back from the life you think you want is worthy of deep reflection. All manner of relationships matter. Cultivate them with kindness. JULY: Sensitivity is not the same as weakness. What unique qualities do you have that make you the right person for the tasks you face? AUGUST: Ride the wild horses of confrontation as best you can. Be responsive to how others react but remember – you are not responsible for their choices. LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22

JUNE: When you let go of powerful expectations that you or others have of the life you are supposedly meant to live, you clear the space for an equally powerful determination to live the life you have. JULY: Pay attention to synchronicity. This world is loaded with all kinds of information some of which does not come via the intellect. You have much work to do. The more you invest it with meaning, the better. AUGUST: This is one crazy world and it is heating up in more ways than one. You are a natural born leader. Don’t be reckless, but don’t drive with your brakes on either. 42

VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21

JUNE: Questions about your chosen career path are worth asking. Once you figure out how you’re doing, make a bee line toward your destination. JULY: Everything about love matters. The ‘who’ and the ‘why’ and the ‘why not’. If friends and lovers don’t get along it can be troublesome. Don’t make excuses and don’t try and make people fit where they don’t. AUGUST: Creative. Resistance. Not words that belong together but it seems it’s your mandate to see beneath your fear (of love? of self-expression?) and push past the barrier. You have time. Don’t try to figure it out all at once. LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22

JUNE: If you know what you want, and it harms none, go ahead and plot your course. It is not yet time to expect reward or acknowledgment. That will come later. JULY: Find the sweet spot between obligation and effort and return there as often as possible. A lot is expected of you and although you are fed by those who have come before (the ancestors), you are only one among many. You can and should not bear the weight of your world alone. AUGUST: The demands of others are heard as com-

www.vitalitymagazine.com

mands. Do not simply react. Be considered in your responses. That way you will not be at the mercy of the demands of wanton children. SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

JUNE: You see more than the average person about what’s going on inside or below the surface. But are you wise? Do you care? Or do you use this gift for personal power? What goes around, comes around this month. JULY: Your words have power. Use them to foster love and creativity, not to cause love to wither on the vine. Locked down or not, we constantly choose how we deal with ourselves and one another. AUGUST: You couldn’t be busier. Every effort is worth making. Consider the energy that powers your efforts. It’s the Life Force: May it be with you and you with it. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20

JUNE: Listen to the words of others – not because they speak truth or lies but because people reveal themselves to you by the shape and colour of their speech. You need to know who you are talking to. JULY: Abundance is not measured the way it once was. We

are coming to value this world differently. Count your blessings even as you understand that nothing lasts. AUGUST: What you love, and whom, seems to be draining your resources. It’s true there is only so much time, energy, and money in your stash. Love is the bottomless resource. The times require you to trust your heart rather than hoard your resources. But don’t be silly about it. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19

JUNE: Sort through the myriad of possibilities that surround you. Discard the ones that don’t sit well, that promise pie-in-the-sky and/or are driven by the insatiable hunger for success. Choose the truly sustainable. JULY: Obligation and responsibility are not the same. Continue sorting and step willingly into that which you can and must do. Do not flagellate yourself with what you can’t do. Nobody can do it all. AUGUST: Tension ratchets up if you lose your footing due to fear, shame, or reactivity. Consider the long haul. Be strategic. Reactions from you cause defenses in others. Responses make space for true interaction. AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17

JUNE: This is the best month for determining commitment to that which feeds your soul and allows creative self-expression. The rest of the year has challenges. JULY: The inner world is as real, but not more real, than the outer one. The more relaxed you are in connecting these worlds, the happier. Relax your shoulders, drop your jaw, take a deep breath, exhale fully, whenever you remember. AUGUST: A time of relentless busyness arises with interruptions at every turn. Imagine you are a cosmic juggler, confident that you can keep so many worlds (balls) in the air. When they fall, have a good laugh and begin again. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19

JUNE: Nothing lasts forever. We know this but cling anyway to the idea of security and the constant star of control. Let go of all nonessentials. Trust the love in your heart, and the friends you know you can count on, to help you find your way. JULY: The time for re-visioning just about everything is now. The world changes and so do we with it. Which isn’t to say it’s all bad. Or good. Expect nothing, which isn’t the same as missing the boat. Be ready for an injection of energy to your finances. AUGUST: Fortune is fickle, which is true but you are not out of luck. In fact there is no telling what’s just around the corner. The best laid plans aren’t always the best way to go. Most of all, be willing to change. 44

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2020

ARIES: March 20 - April 19

JUNE: This is an excellent time to think about the future. Some say this makes the gods laugh, but even if the best laid plans cannot be counted upon it’s a good thing to have a reference point. JULY: Roll up your sleeves. There is a lot to do and it will be easier if you remind yourself that you were born to this life and therefore it’s yours to deal with. Perhaps you are part of a long line of incarnations. What can you do with that idea? AUGUST: Your passion to ignite the fires of radical change is met with many obstacles. The situation requires strategy and presence for the next four months. Breakthrough is possible. Dynamic patience, like active listening, requires presence. TAURUS: April 20 - May 20

JUNE: Letting go of things that waste your precious time is one thing. Now the quest(ion) is: What’s worth having? Take it seriously in big as well as small ways. JULY: The best friends are the wise ones. They may challenge you because they see your potential, not because they want to undermine you. Who you associate with matters this month. AUGUST: Our fundamental beliefs underlie our actions. In times of chaos, like these, it may seem that we should go straight to action without reflection. Not a good idea. Give some thought to possible outcomes. It’s all too easy to do the wrong thing. GEMINI: May 21 - June 20

JUNE: Time to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, acknowledge your losses and choose the way forward. You have paid your dues even if others don’t agree. It’s all about what you want and how you want to get it. JULY: So much depends on others. We are a deeply interconnected species. The successes of manipulators and liars is on account of our willingness, our desire, to trust. Evaluate, be wary, and take the measure of those who want you to trust them. AUGUST: Having determined who you can and cannot trust, it still remains important that you listen to your hunches and trust your felt sense. Now is a time to meet challenges with as much calm confidence as possible. Change generally feels like chaos at first. Julie Simmons is a practising astrologer in Toronto. “Now and always, we need to protect, conserve, plant and restore forests, wetlands and other natural areas — to help in the fight against climate disruption and disease spread, and to ensure more people have access to areas that keep us mentally and physically well.” David Suzuki HealtHy forests mean HealtHy people

By David Suzuki If you look at a forest top from above or below, you might see a pattern of nicely spaced pathways twisting between the trees. This phenomenon is known as “crown shyness.” Despite their crown “social distancing,” many trees communicate with each other through underground fungal networks, or “mycorrhizae.” As Peter Wohlleben explored in The Hidden Life of Trees, and Wayne Grady in I in Tree: A Life Story, these “woodwide webs” allow fungi to derive sugars from the trees, while providing trees with water, nutrients and better conditions for root expansion. They also facilitate transmission of warnings between trees about threats from insects, drought and more. Both books illuminate www.vitalitymagazine.com

how much we have to learn about trees and forests. Once you start exploring their complexity – the ways in which they interconnect to be stronger as a whole than their constituent parts – you’ll never see them in the same way. We can’t live without trees and forests. They provide oxygen, food, wood and other resources, and sequester carbon. Forests – and all natural spaces – are also beneficial for our physical and mental health. Numerous studies illustrate how much forest walks can do for heart and respiratory health, immune system function and lowering stress levels. Studies based on Japan’s long tradition of shinrinyoku or “forest bathing” found people who spend time in nature inhale “beneficial bacteria, plant-derived essential oils and negatively-charged ions” that interact with gut bacteria to strengthen the body’s immune system and improve both mental and physical health. One Japanese study of 585 participants found walking through forested

areas decreased depression, anxiety, anger, fatigue and confusion, and increased vigour and other positive feelings compared with walking through city areas. A UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Magazine article describes scientific findings that “walking in trees lowered people’s blood pressure, cortisol levels, pulse rates, and sympathetic nervous system activity (related to stress), while increasing their parasympathetic nervous system activity (related to relaxation)” — all good for heart health. Studies have also found proximity to forested areas improves respiratory health. Reducing stress and anxiety and boosting immune systems and respiratory health are all important in these troubling times — keeping in mind the current rules and recommendations about social distancing and hygiene. Forests are also a critical defence against disease outbreaks. A Nation article notes 60% of microbial pathogens that have emerged or re-emerged into new areas since 1940 (including HIV, Ebola, Zika and a number of coronaviruses) originated from animals – two-thirds from wildlife and the rest from pets and livestock. Wild animals become more susceptible to pathogens if their habitat is damaged or destroyed, and this also puts infected animals in closer contact with people. The illicit wildlife

trade is another area that needs to be brought under control to keep pathogens from spreading from one species to another. Industrial agriculture, where many animals are kept together in close quarters, can also increase disease spread – as we saw in 2014 when millions of poultry had to be slaughtered to contain a virulent form of avian influenza. Another argument for shifting to a plant-based diet! Regardless of whether or not you can get out into nature, it’s important now that we take care of each other and ourselves. Let’s take a lesson from the trees and recognize that we are stronger together. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. Due to his interest in health and nutrition, he also studied at Institute of Holistic Nutrition. With his artwork, he combines his artistic skills with his holistic nutritional knowledge to create what he believes are new insights into better health and awareness of the dangers we face in daily life. As humans, we are entitled to the unadulterated health promoting foods Mother Nature provides, and not the artificial creations offered by industrial food production. Unfortunately we have been denied that right, resulting in an increase of obesity and chronic degenerative diseases at ever-younger ages. Society’s answer to this problem has been to develop a plethora of pharmaceutical drugs. But many are dangerous and can cause serious side effects, for which even more drugs are prescribed and sometimes end up being more harmful than the conditions themselves. by Aviva Mayers, MSW Publisher: Friesen Press Aviva Mayers was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Like millions of women throughout the world, she initially agreed to a conventional treatment approach out of fear and confusion. But she began to question those choices as the treatment progressed. Following her treatment she took herself on a journey to learn about gentler, less invasive, treatments outside of conventional medicine. Aviva attributes her current state of good health to the integrative and alternative paths she ultimately followed. cine. It is the result of the journey that Aviva took back to health, and many of her choices outside of mainstream medicine are discussed here. The book includes interviews with patients who followed a path to recovery, much of which they attribute to alternative treatments. And it includes interviews with a range of health care practitioners working with patients with breast or other cancers. The professionals share their thoughts on mainstream treatments, discuss integrative and alternative interventions that can help with recovery, and in some cases even replace conventional treatments. The book also offers advice on preventing breast cancer in the first place or how to avoid a recurrence. If Only I Had Known is essential reading for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. It provides a unique perspective on treatments that your doctor may not tell you about. Knowing about these options could improve your life both physically and psychologically. The information contained here is also relevant to people suffering from other cancers, since many of the same inflammatory
