OPINION
Woodford Files The year 2020 has been a tough slog so far. And if the epidemiologists are to be believed, there’s more pandemic pain to come in the dark months ahead. But I think there’s another way to look at things, a way that is more empowering. And that involves some basic natural laws: 1) The most important player in this pandemic is the human immune system – that living, breathing population of friendly microbes and bacteria that stands guard over our health 24 hours a day and determines whether we live or die. 2) Certain strategies work beautifully to strengthen our immune defences, and others work to weaken them. Figuring out the difference between the two is key. One country that seems to have figured it out is Scotland, where First Minister Nicola Sturgeon recently announced a plan to supply free vitamin D to citizens. On October 28, The Times reported that “The most vulnerable Scots are to be given free vitamin D supplements to help to boost their immune system. People who have been shielding are to be sent a four-month supply to compensate for a lack of natural sunlight.” And now Boris Johnson is considering the same thing for sun-starved citizens in England. Find out more in News & Notes on page 6. In the spirit of folklore medicine, this month we bring you an updated feature by holistic nutritionist Julie Daniluk entitled: “Fragrant Spices Bring Heat and Medicine

to Winter Kitchens.” Here we see how food and beverages can work as medicine – from ginger tea for soothing a sore throat, to turmeric milk for easing congestion, to cinnamon for improving blood sugar balance (important because diabetes and metabolic syndrome are two comorbidities that increase the risk of death from COVID-19). And the humble horseradish is getting star treatment by herbalist Carol Little in this issue as she explains its ability to kill infections, fight germs, and clear sinuses. After a short hiatus, Kim Elkington is back on board this month with advice on using these dark times to do our shadow work and feel our way into a brighter future. She also includes a wonderful piece of Indigenous wisdom from a Hopi elder. With so much focus on the coronavirus these days, it’s easy to forget that our hardworking glands and organs are in need of constant care and attention. Canada’s favourite holistic physician, Dr. Zoltan Rona, returns this month to remind us to keep our kidneys strong and healthy. He has created a wonderful guide to preventing and treating kidney disease, which explains which foods and herbs work to heal the kidneys, and which ones work to harm. This will be of great interest to the thousands of Canadians who suffer from chronic kidney problems, especially our seniors. In closing, if I were to pack a bag of wellness essentials to take on a winter adventure this year, my top choices would be: – probiotics to feed my gut bacteria; – vitamins C, D, and a multimineral with zinc and selenium for resistance to germs; – hydrogen peroxide to carry in my purse as a safe disinfectant; – a sturdy pair of walking boots so I can go daily to the parks and ravines for a brisk walk in the oxygen-rich air. Those with the most resilient immune systems will survive this pandemic and many more. So let’s get on with the task of building up our reserves of immune power and experience great health regardless of whether we’re exposed to the latest bugs or not. Julia Woodford

UK’s PRIME MINISTER SET TO PROVIDE FREE VITAMIN D IN CORONAVIRUS FIGHT
In a Commons session on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, Boris Johnson told Members that he would be providing an update on the plan to follow Scotland’s example by offering free vitamin D supplies to those shielding as the country hunkers down in the latest round of lockdowns. This is a plan that the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has already announced. In the same session, exConservative Cabinet minister David Davis again raised the issue, highlighting the progress Scotland has made as well as studies pointing to the vitamin’s efficacy. “Over the weekend, a number of eminent scientists called on the Government to try to resolve the vitamin D deficiency issues in the United Kingdom to reduce the severity of the pandemic,” he said. “There have been dozens of studies in hundreds of countries over the last six months that show – or imply anyway – that that could reduce infection rates by half and death rates by half again.” The Scottish government is sending four months’ sup-

ESSENTIAL OILS IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND PREVENT ILLNESS
As we move inside to escape the winter cold, indoor air quality becomes more important than ever. So it’s a perfect time to introduce essential oils into the home to freshen the air, kill germs, and sanitize surfaces. One popular essential oil recipe combines oil of clove, cinnamon, rosemary, and eucalyptus. This blend, known as “Thieves”, is thought to have been invented during the time of the
Bubonic Plague back in 1413 by thieves who used it for protection while robbing corpses of plague victims. The story goes that the thieves would put the oil blend on their hands, temples, and face masks, believing it to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Today, the Thieves formula is available as an essential oil blend, or an ingredient in hand sanitizers, home cleaning, and personal care products. An easy way to refresh the air in any room is to put a few drops of the Thieves blend, or individual essential oils such as eucalyptus or lemon, in a bowl of water in the room. As the water evaporates the essential oil is released into the air. This is a safe, nontoxic alternative to chemical air fresheners that may contain carcinogens. A report posted on www. healthline.com in January 2020 summarized two studies that found oregano oil to have significant antioxidant and antiviral properties. One of the studies, undertaken in 2011, “found that oregano essential oil can inhibit both human and animal viruses in vitro.” This action is likely due to carvacrol, a main compound in oregano oil. According to the Nov. 16, 2020 issue of The Defender, a newsletter of Children’s Health Defence founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., “News organizations and journalists who raise legitimate concerns about Operation Warp Speed will be de-platformed to make way for the “required” saturation of pro-vaccine messaging across the English-speaking media landscape” in coming months. The newsletter goes on to say: “In just the past week, the national-security states of the U.S. and UK have discreetly let it be known that the cyber tools and online tactics previously designed for use in the post-9/11 “war on terror” are now being repurposed for use against information sources promoting “vaccine hesitancy” and information related to COVID-19 that runs counter to their state narratives. “Both countries are preparing to silence independent journalists who raise legitimate concerns over pharmaceutical industry corruption or the extreme secrecy surrounding statesponsored COVID-19 vaccination efforts, now that Pfizer’s vaccine candidate is slated to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by month’s end.” Excerpted from “The Defender: Children’s Health Defense News & Views”. Magnesium deficiency is found more frequently in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than in healthy children. In one study of ADHD children, magnesium deficiency was found in 95% of those examined.(1) Does this warrant magnesium supplementation for hyperactive children? The answer is yes. Supplementation with magnesium appears to be especially helpful for alleviating hyperactivity in children.(2) In a group of children supplemented with about 200 milligrams (mg) per day of magnesium for six months, there was “an 8

• Magnesium Is Safe and pains, relieve constipaIt Works – A review that tion, reduce anxiety, and looked at studies done on reduce headache days magnesium for the treatment of ADHD in children concluded that although “studies supported that magnesium is effective for treating ADHD... until further strong evidences for its efficacy and safety are provided, magnesium is not recommended for treating ADHD.”(4) This is typical of modern “evidencebased” medical literature. Some medical professionals will ignore what is already known unless a sufficient number of double-blind randomized studies have been performed. Magnesium supplementation is safe and effective, and it is critically important for children who are deficient. The safety of magnesium has been well established. There have been no deaths reported from magnesium supplementation.(5) An overdose of magnesium may result in loose stools. This is temporary, and will go away once dosages are reduced or divided into smaller amounts are given throughout the day. Magnesium supplementation is safe and it is worth trying, especially when we consider the dangers of ADHD drugs. • ADHD Drugs Are Dangerous – Depending on which ADHD drug is being taken, side effects of overdose include mydriasis, tremors, anxiety, agitation, hyper-reflexia, headache, gastrointestinal upset, combative behavior, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, dizziness, dystonia, insomnia, paranoia, movement disorders, tachycardia hypertension, seizures, and yes, even hyperactivity, the very condition an ADHD drug is supposed to be treating. Oh, and these drugs can kill you. (6,7) Even if “fatalities are rare” (7), I imagine this brings little comfort to parents. Moreover, the most common side effects of ADHD drugs, taken as prescribed, are appetite loss, abdominal pain, headaches, sleep disturbances, diminished growth, hallucinations and psychotic disturbances.(8) Magnesium produces none of these effects. And even though magnesium is both safe and effective, nowhere in the report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Clinical Practice Guideline for ADHD is magnesium supplementation recommended.(8) When it comes to the potential for kids to die suddenly from taking their prescribed ADHD medication, concerns are dismissed by the AAP with statements like “evidence is conflicting as to whether stimulant medications increase the www.vitalitymagazine.com
risk of sudden death.”(8) One would hope that with this level of uncertainty about the risk of death, the medical advice would be against the use of ADHD medication. Instead, the recommendation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is “continue your ADHD treatment as prescribed by a healthcare professional.”(9) Just be sure to “talk to your healthcare professional about any questions you may have about ADHD medications.” Well, never has “talking about it” made medication any less dangerous. • Other Benefits of Magnesium – In addition to its effectiveness for treating hyperactivity, magnesium also benefits children in other profound ways: it can help kids sleep better at night, relieve discomfort from sore muscles and growing pains, relieve constipation, reduce anxiety, and reduce headache days.(10) “I have come to the conclusion that everyone could benefit from extra magnesium supplementation.” - Carolyn Dean, MD, ND • Magnesium and Other Nutrients for ADHD – Children with ADHD may benefit from optimal levels of several nutrients including vitamin D(11), iron(12), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids.(13) Pediatrician Ralph Campbell, MD, recommends a vitamin B complex supplement be given with breakfast, an

additional 100 mg of B6 at another meal, and 200 mg or more of magnesium per day for ADHD children. This is in addition to removing refined sugar from the diet, avoiding artificial food dyes, and providing healthy food.(13) Other helpful tips include limiting screen time and increasing exercise, especially in the outdoors. • Dosage – The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of magnesium for children ages one to three is 80 mg per day. Children ages four to five: 130 mg magnesium per day. By age nine, our government recommends that kids should be getting (at least) 240 mg of magnesium per day. And at age fourteen, between 360 to 410 mg per day. Keep in mind, only about 30 to 40% of dietary magnesium is absorbed by the body.(14) Remember, too much magnesium in a lessabsorbable form can cause loose stool. This side effect can be prevented by reducing the amount of magnesium given and providing it in a more absorbable form. If larger total daily doses of magnesium are required, divide the dose into smaller amounts and give it multiple times throughout the day. • Form – Oral magnesium citrate is inexpensive and fairly well absorbed. Other useful, but more costly, oral forms of magnesium include magnesium glycinate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, and magnesium chloride. Avoid magnesium oxide (it absorbs very poorly) and avoid both magnesium glutamate and magnesium aspartate (10) Magnesium sulfate is cheap and can be obtained transdermally by soaking in regular Epsom salt baths. Fibrinogen is a plasma protein that plays a key role in the process of blood clotting. Elevated levels of this protein are a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Turmeric has been shown to reverse elevated blood levels of fibrinogen safely and without side effects.[5] Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, works by stimulating the liver and gallbladder to do the essential work of bile production. Curcumin can also reduce symptoms of bloating and gas in people suffering from indigestion. [6,7] Traditionally, a milk formula called “golden milk” or “turmeric milk” has been used by Ayurvedic physicians for colds, congestion, headache, and sore throats. One classic recipe involves boiling fresh or dried turmeric root, ginger, and honey in milk. (Ed note: To see a recipe for golden milk by naturopath Sat Dharam Kaur, click on: https://vitalitymagazine.com/a rticle/super-golden-milk/) Turmeric is also reputed to help alleviate depression. Turmeric is a root that looks a lot like ginger, but it is quite difficult to grind. If you buy your turmeric already ground, make sure you buy small quantities of good quality powder, and use it up before you buy more. Try Turmeric Tea – In a pint-canning jar, place a handful of dried lemon balm leaves, a few slices of turmeric and ginger root and several crushed rose hips. Pour freshly boiled water over the herbs. CARDAMOM
Cardamoms are the small dried fruits of the perennial herb, Elettaria cardamomum, known as the “Queen of Spices. This fruit has a pleasant aroma and a warm, slightly sweet and pungent taste. Cardamom is widely used in Asian cooking and is an essential ingredient in garam masala. Hot Ginger Tea with Honey Cardamom helps to reduce and Lemon is a soothing symptoms of gastrointestinal folklore remedy for sore disorders such as constipation throats and runny noses and diarrhea. Studies show that it can also have a positive effect on blood pressure – a 3 gram serving has been shown to significantly decrease diastolic pressure, without side effects. (8)(9) Cardamom has also been shown to have strong antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms that cause dental cavities and bad breath. (10) Cardamom seeds lose their flavour and aroma quickly after being removed from their protective pods, so it is best to buy whole cardamom pods. Then crack the pods, remove the seeds, discard the pods and grind the seeds. Ground cardamom can be found at the grocery store but it typically has less flavour than the whole seeds. You only need a little to give your recipes a sweet, aromatic vanilla undertone.
CHILI POWDER AND CAYENNE
Also worthy of special mention are two fiery herbs which add an intense heat to any foods they come in contact with. This is beneficial for people with a ‘cold’ constitution who can handle hot spices (this should be tested with care, and avoided if you have nightshade sensitivity). However, these spices are not recommended for those with excess pitta (ie. a ‘hot’ constitution) as they can increase inflammation.

Humble Horseradish ~ Pungent Root Medicine BY CAROL LITTLE, R.H.

s a traditional herbalist and food writer, I have long been interested in the healing power of food and the benefits of plant medicine. Horseradish belongs in both camps – as a powerful food and a medicinal plant. Horseradish offers a variety of health benefits when added to meals. A study by Delphi, the most importhe University of Illinois tant oracle in Greek showed that it contains submythology, told Apollo stantial quantities of gluthat the radish was cosinolates – compounds worth its weight in lead, known to increase human the beet was worth resistance to cancer. The its weight in silver, power of this ‘humble hot and the horseradish shot’ root is created chemiits weight in gold cally when it is grated or agitated to release constituents that, working together, produce magic! An effective daily dose of horseradish can be as little as one gram, or less than a teaspoon. In addition, this humble root contains antibacterial, antibiotic, anti-parasitic, anti-anemic, and aperient properties. It is also a coronary vasodilator, a digestive, a diuretic, and an expectorant, which means that it stimulates a number of body systems and can be used to aid mild circulatory problems, weak digestion, and water retention. A potent digestive elixir can be created by combining horseradish with carminative herbs and apple cider vinegar. And according to Richard Mabey, author of The New Age Herbalist, “Horseradish is a powerful circulatory stimulant with antibiotic properties due to the mustard oil it contains. It is effective for lung and urinary infections because mustard oil is excreted through these channels.” Culinary Herbalist Pat Crocker, author of 23 healthy herb books, is also a fan of horseradish: “Long before it found its way onto Sunday dinner plates between the mashed potatoes and the roast beef, horseradish was used medicinally. Indeed, Delphi, the most important oracle in Greek mythology, told Apollo that the radish was worth its weight in lead, the beet its weight in silver, and the horseradish its weight in gold.” Sinus pain due to blocked sinus passages and/or infection is probably the most common ailment for which I have personally used horseradish. Sometimes all that you need is a quick, old-fashioned remedy: Grate horseradish and put a

smidge (1/4 tsp or so) in your mouth, holding it there until the flavour subsides, usually within 30 seconds, before swallowing. People tend to initially shy away from this remedy, but those who try it often find that blocked mucous loosens and drains, thus relieving sinus pressure in a short time. Doing this daily for a few days has resulted in the complete clearing of sinus infections for some of my clients.
RECIPES CHRZAN: Polish Horseradish Condiment (pronounced “Kuh-shan”) Years ago, I had the good fortune to visit Poland with my friend Grace. The entire trip was a feast, an adventure in new tastes. Thanks to Grace for sharing her family recipe for “Polish Horseradish”. It is historically made from horseradish root and white wine vinegar, prepared by hand. I confess to using a food processor, which makes this recipe much easier to prepare. 1 pound fresh horseradish root, peeled and grated 1/2 cup white wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) 1/4 teaspoon each sea salt and pepper (to taste) 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon demerara sugar (optional) Combine all ingredients in a glass bowl. Pack into clean, sterilized pint jars. The condiment can be stored, covered, in the fridge for up to two weeks. (Note: I have sometimes made a huge batch by using 2 pounds of roots and adapting the recipe above accordingly.) CWIKLA: Horseradish & Beet Condiment Recipe (pronounced CHEEK-wah) This is a tasty pretty PINK condiment – and a totally fabulous flavour enhancer! 1 pound beets (cooked, peeled, cooled, and grated) 2 cups grated fresh horseradish root (or ‘prepared’ horseradish sold in jars in the fridge section of grocery store) 1 tsp unpasteurized apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 tsp brown sugar (optional) In a large bowl, mix vinegar, brown sugar, horseradish and salt until well combined. Add grated beets and mix thoroughly. Spoon into clean, sterilized glass jars and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Recipe Note: ** The sugar in this recipe goes with the traditional way to make this condiment. However, I have found that the beets provide enough sweet flavour. Leave it out if sugar is not a part of your lifestyle. www.vitalitymagazine.com

Cold Kicker Honey I love to add herbs to raw honey to create cold remedies. They’re easy to make and simple to change to suit what’s needed. Honey helps to coat the throat and relieve irritation. Both antimicrobial and antioxidant, honey also helps to fight bacteria and viruses. Ginger helps to overcome the most common type of cold virus, the rhinovirus, due to a high sesquiterpene content. Horseradish packs a nutritive punch, and also helps liquefy phlegm which can clear and relieve a cough. Prepare this sweet remedy in advance for the next time you feel a cold coming on: 2 cups raw honey 1/2 of one ginger root, sliced or grated 1/2 of one horseradish root, grated Combine grated fresh ginger root and horseradish root in a pot of good quality honey. Place the formula in a glass jar, seal, and let sit for a couple of weeks, if possible. Eat this potent honey by the spoonful to soothe sore throats and alleviate cold or cough symptoms, or add a teaspoon to a cup of sage tea. Beet Relish A new addition to my repertoire is a simple beet relish, courtesy of my friend Julie. It complements virtually any meat or vegetable entrée with a big punch of flavour. It’s easy to make and is addictive. 8 cups raw beets, grated or finely diced 1 cup raw horseradish, grated 1 cup raw onions, finely chopped 1/4 – 1/2 cup organic cane sugar (optional) 1 tsp sea salt 4 cups unpasteurized apple cider vinegar Combine all ingredients in a pot and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes. Pour hot mixture into sterilized jars, seal, and refrigerate. Keeps for one to two weeks. Keep Your Kidneys Strong and Healthy
A Guide to Preventing and Treating Chronic Kidney Disease BY DR. ZoltAn P. RonA, MD, MSc.

Anti-inflammatory herbs and vitamins that work to improve kidney health include
eeping your kidneys healthy is vital to your curcumin, milk thistle, magnesium, and body’s well-being. Healthy kidbroad spectrum neys ensure that your body can filter and expel waste efficiently, probiotics while producing hormones to help you function at your best. Your kidneys work to filter blood, balance electrolytes, and regulate hormones that affect your bones and blood pressure. One important hormone made by the kidneys (erythropoietin) is involved in the creation of red blood cells and helps prevent anemia.
What Causes Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition that occurs most often along with (or because of) diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Certain genetic factors and recurrent kidney infections also increase the risk. OTC drugs such as non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — acetaminophen and aspirin – can also raise the risk. Illicit drugs like cocaine, heroin, and amphetamines can also injure kidney tissue and increase the risk of CKD. Prescription antibiotics, antihypertensives, antivirals, and ulcer medication (PPIs – proton pump inhibitors) can all damage the kidneys and lead to CKD. Prescription laxatives, chemotherapy drugs, and contrast media for various diagnostic scans are also potentially damaging for the kidneys. According to the National Kidney Foundation, at least one in three adults are at risk of developing CKD. 28
VITALITY MAGAZINE – WINTER 2020

CKD is most often diagnosed by blood and urine tests which detect high creatinine, high blood urea nitrogen (BUN), a high albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR), and a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Urinalysis might show excessive protein, blood, glucose or uric acid. An ultrasound could diagnose abnormalities in the structure or size of the kidneys, or a biopsy might reveal a chronic inflammatory condition such as an autoimmune disease. CKD can progress without symptoms for decades, and tends to be increasingly diagnosed with advancing age. The most severe forms (kidney failure) could require regular dialysis or transplantation. The health of the kidneys is largely determined by the health of the gut, but numerous other factors could also be involved. An abnormal balance of the gut bacteria can cause immune dysregulation, the production of gut-derived uremic toxins, and high circulating levels of bacteria-derived lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Dysbiosis (gut flora imbalance, candidiasis, SIBO aka small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and leaky gut syndrome are all involved in the ultimate creation of CKD. An altered gut microbiome causes a chronic systemic inflammatory state which is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Chronic inflammation that goes untreated for decades eventually leads to fibrosis (scar tissue formation) and reduced kidney function (insufficiency) and kidney failure. l
Urinary Signs and Symptoms
Clear urine: comes about from drinking excessive amounts of water. l Deep yellow urine: comes about from inadequate water intake or just an intake of supplemental B complex vitamins (especially vitamin B2), and is harmless with no other specific meaning. l Foamy or cloudy urine: can possibly be due to excess urinary protein, kidney or bladder infection, or another inflammatory condition. l Red or pink urine: can be caused by blood from a bladder or kidney stone or an infection; could also be due to a tumour; rarely from eating beets, rhubarb, or blueberries. l Blue or green urine: is often caused by consuming foods containing food colouring dyes. l Smelly urine: could be associated with the age of the urine and may indicate the presence of glucose and ketones. An asparagus smell in the urine occurs in most people after eating asparagus and this is considered normal.
Best Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy
The key to improving kidney health is to follow an antiinflammatory diet. This involves the avoidance of sugar (especially fructose), as well as alcohol, caffeine, gluten, and other foods that trigger intolerances or allergies. meats, poultry, fish and seafood will also help to reduce much of the stress on the kidneys. Over the years I have seen many patients in my practice who were able to improve their kidney function dramatically by going more vegan with their diet, as well as eliminating all the pro-inflammatory grains. To prevent kidney disease avoid Unpasteurized apple vinegar is one of salt, added potassium, protein, and cider the fermented foods phosphorus supplements. An ideal that support optimal protein intake is likely around one- kidney health half gram of protein per pound of lean body mass, which for most adults is 40 to 70 grams a day. The American Kidney Foundation recommends restricting protein to a maximum of 50 grams if you have kidney disease. Urine should look pale yellow. If it is dark yellow, the fluid intake needs to be increased. Urinating 7 – 8 times daily is normal as far as frequency is concerned.
Protect the Kidneys by Limiting Drugs Avoid over-the-counter drugs especially NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen (Aleve) and celecoxib (Celebrex)). It is also wise to avoid antibiotics, antihypertensives, antivirals, and ulcer medication especially proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Prescription laxatives, chemotherapy drugs and contrast media (e.g. gadolinium) for various diagnostic scans are all potentially kidney damaging too. Illicit drugs like cocaine, heroin, and amphetamines (prescription or otherwise) are all potentially nephrotoxic. Check for Underactive Thyroid Function Many CKD patients suffer from cold hands and feet and have low basal body temperatures. An underactive thyroid condition could be at the bottom of this issue, so ask your doctor to check for this on lab testing. The tests to request from your doctor if you have thyroid symptoms are TSH, free T3, free T4, thyroid antibodies and reverse T3.

Foods, Herbs, Supplements That Work to Heal the Kidneys Foods that enhance kidney health include: organic cabbage, cauliflower, lemons, lemon juice, garlic, onions, apples, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, cherries, red and purple grapes, pumpkin seeds, watermelons, berries, sweet potatoes and organic kale. The following supplements can enhance kidney health mainly because of their anti-inflammatory activity. Amounts recommended depend on individual needs and health status: n ASTRAGALUS: is a herb that modulates immunity to protect the kidneys. n n
MILK THISTLE: protects both kidneys and liver. CURCUMIN: and other turmeric extracts are beneficial due to their strong anti-inflammatory properties. n MODIFIED CITRUS PECTIN: (Pectasol-C) can delay the fibrosis process, extending the life of the kidneys. This is also the same nutrient used to reduce the spread of many cancers.
Cordyceps mushroom, popular in Tradtional Chinese Medicine formulas, helps to reduce scarring in the kidneys
n REISHI MUSHROOM: makes the kidney less permeable, reduces proteinuria, and helps stop erosion of the outer membrane of the nephron (the podocyte).
n PROBIOTICS: A good broad-spectrum form can help balance the gut flora. n CORDYCEPS MUSHROOM: Reduces fibrosis and sclerosis of the kidney, improves serum creatinine and BUN, and reduces proteinuria. Continued on next page

n MELATONIN: is useful because most CKD patients have been shown to have low levels of melatonin, a gppd sleep aid. Further, adequate sleep is important in healing CKD. Melatonin is an important longevity hormone.
n WOBENZYME: is a digestive enzyme that has been found to reduce fibrosis in the kidneys. It is anti-inflammatory when taken on an empty stomach. n
COQ10: can help control blood pressure and is important because many of the drugs that patients with CKD consume can destroy CoQ10 and increase cardiovascular symptoms. n ALPHA LIPOIC ACID: is known to help prevent high blood sugar but is also protective of kidney and liver health. n VITAMIN C: is a strong antioxidant to prevent kidney disease. n VITAMIN D3 & K2: is often deficient in people with CKD and is needed to improve bone density problems associated with CKD.

Natural Products to Use Carefully These common nutritional supplements can potentially damage the kidneys if not monitored regularly: – Noni juice (due to the high potassium content) – Bulk-forming laxatives like flaxseed (due to the need to consume higher amounts of water) – Herbal supplements from other countries (eg. Chinese herbs can be contaminated with toxic heavy metals and drugs if not purchased from a reputable TCM practitioner) – Herbal diuretics like bucha, uva ursi, parsley, and juniper berry could be potential trouble sources since they can interact with many prescription drugs. – Herbal supplements that can interact with drugs commonly used by CKD patients should be avoided, including: St. John’s Wort, echinacea, ginkgo, garlic, ginseng, licorice, ginger, and blue cohosh. In kidney transplant patients or those on dialysis, these should be mostly avoided. This is not to say that these herbs are not beneficial. On the contrary they all can reduce inflammation and prevent further kidney disease. They just need careful monitoring for drug-nutrient interactions. Chronic kidney disease manifests in different ways from individual to individual. www.vitalitymagazine.com

Ask the Doctor:
Reader Questions Pros & Cons of Serrapeptase Enzymes
Drugs that can cause stomach lining damage include NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) or steroids like prednisone
Question: I heard a troubling report today regarding someone who was taking 6 serrapeptase enzymes on an empty stomach each day. This was as directed, but it resulted in the burning of her stomach lining, and then she fell into a coma for a number of days. Fortunately, she is fine now. I don't know her personally but I myself have taken a course of just as many serrapeptase enzymes from time to time over the years, with only beneficial effects – inflammation markers low / c-reactive protein good! / fibromyalgia symptoms all but gone! I have my own theory about what happened to the lady, but I couldn’t help but
wonder what you might make of this peculiar situation. With many thanks, Dr. Rona. Many of my natural health-conscious cohorts have relied upon on you and your solid judgement over many years and we are grateful for what you continue to bring to the table! J. Troubideau, Montreal

VITALITY MAGAZINE – WINTER 2020
Dr. Rona responds: Serrapeptase can rarely cause stomach irritation in very sensitive individuals, but there are no reports of it causing stomach erosions and comas. That individual you speak of is most likely using drugs that can cause stomach lining damage such as NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) or
steroids like prednisone. Such patients are often also using a variety of natural health products at the same time in efforts to stop pain. Those drugs (NSAIDS and steroids) can cause ulcers and blood loss leading to comas and death. Unfortunately, the medical profession tends to avoid acknowledging the damage caused by drugs and instead attributes adverse reactions to natural health products mostly because they are unfamiliar with supplements like serrapeptase. They then raise the alarm bells that natural health products are dangerous. So before you jump to conclusions, ask the source you got this information from to give you more details. Is that patient on NSAIDS, Prednisone or other drugs? Is that patient a diabetic? What other supplements is that patient taking? Is that patient using

psychiatric drugs? I once had a patient on psychiatric drugs who also took high doses of vitamin B3 (niacin) and couldn’t perceive any stomach upsets due to her drugs so she continued to take the niacin plus her drugs and ended up in the hospital due to a GI bleeding episode. Naturally, the B3 was blamed for this – not the fact that she was taking high doses of psychiatric drugs. So, get the full story before needlessly get upset about serrapeptase dangers. Dr. Zoltan P. Vaccine Choice Canada Gets Public Support:
https://vitalitymagazine.com/article/woodford-files-on-covid-19vaccines-and-censorship/
I am writing to express my gratitude for your continued support of Vaccine Choice Canada (VCC). We received a new member this week who shared that his membership was a direct result of reading your Woodford Files comments in the Fall edition of Vitality. I’ve just read Julia’s comments and appreciate her courage to speak truth to power. It is essential that people understand that it is the media that is evoking anxiety and fear of COVID and censoring valuable information about natural and non-toxic prevention and treatment strategies. We need more voices like yours. In gratitude for all that you do. Ted Kuntz, President Vaccine Choice Canada www.vaccinechoicecanada.com www.vitalitymagazine.com
Woodford responds: It is our pleasure to share the educational resources provided by VCC for people who wish to be fully informed on the vaccination debate. We are also pleased to share the new petition just launched by VCC to protect medical freedom in Canada. (See page 47.) Questioning Advice on Fats & Oils
Re: https://vitalitymagazine.com /article/my-favourite-antioxidant -foods-for-fall/
I have learned from a heart doctor at the Mayo clinic the following abbreviation for a healthy lifestyle. He developed the approach after he was told that he would only have a few months to live if he did not undergo open heart surgery. It is called RAVE: No Refined foods No Animal proteins No Vegetable oils No Exceptions other than Exercise The heart doctor created RAVE as his new lifestyle, and I have followed it for the last 30 years. I am now 83 – mentally and physically fit, am a hike leader for 10 – 12 kms (moderate hikes on the Bruce Trail and beyond), do YOGA daily, and work in an office doing administrative and accounting functions. Am sustaining a “plantbased nutrition” diet and supplement it by vitamin D and B12 M. Stevens, Kincardine, Ontario Woodford responds Dear M, That is great advice from the doctor and we agree with it completely.

As we snuggle closer to the fire during this winter season and consider the year that has passed, we have a great deal to contemplate, particularly our inner work. Without the happy distractions of parties and feasting and gifts, we find ourselves becoming more aware of our shadows, our fears, and confusion. There is an extraordinary amplification of this awareness these days, knowing that the whole world is feeling the same uncertainty. This has been a year of shadows and fears as we look around at an unfamiliar landscape. Staying open to the truth, hoping to recognize it when it walks in the room, is both exhilarating and exhausting. When truth seems fiction and fiction seems truth, we are being forced to waken from our happy place and see the dark underbelly of reality. Shadow work is a tool that lets those uncomfortable feelings percolate up so you can look them right in the eye and say “It’s ok. I see you…I feel you… I transform you.” Some days we can look right at the shadow, like a warrior, and on other days

SACRED JOURNEYS Everyday Rituals & Celebrations WITH KIM ELKINGTON The gift of these times is that we can see the shadow. This is the holy work of the winter solstice. Lets face it, you and I cannot control the world outside. We can only control what is inside ourselves. That is our work. we return to the shores of familiar beliefs that once comforted us, but which now feel less solid. That’s when we watch ourselves fall off-centre, having reacted to the loss of the known. Resilience of the Human Spirit And then there is the reassuring and heart-swelling kindness of strangers, the love pouring from hearts world-wide in compassion and gratitude for those who are trying to function ‘outside’ in the whirlwind of confusion with carefulness and hopefulness. Teachers heading back to the classroom in a system robbed of sufficient funding
for decades are trying to work a miracle. Kids are deliriously happy to be back with the other kids, though they are dressed like Darth Vader. Parents are breathing in the momentary space as kids go back to class and are happy for their children, but never far from worry. There are so many outbursts of emotion as we go through these ‘wash and rinse’ cycles. Society is sharing its feelings. There are no distractions. It is profoundly important to be touched by our connectedness, by the enormity of it all. Fear, doubt, and worry are the filters of scarcity, limitation, and separation.

And when they act up, we close down the opening where we both give and receive love, grace, and gratitude. Shadow work helps us to inhabit our hearts. When we do that, we raise our frequency and we change the world, one heart at a time. Doing Your Shadow Work When you feel yourself off centre, perhaps having a sudden outburst of some kind, become aware of your frequency. Let it come up, in its pure form, and just feel how and where it sits in your body. This energy can usually only sustain itself for under a minute. If it’s longer, you are attaching to the ‘story’ behind the feeling. As the feeling fades, shift your frequency to the belief you want to hold about yourself, or the world – imagine what it might feel like. This is how we shift our reality: one feeling, one moment at a time, replaced with what we want. Each time a feeling comes up, you have an opportunity to detangle it from your held stories and beliefs. The more you do this, the easier it will be each time. As you consciously and lovingly let
these trapped feelings go, you strengthen your immune system. The gift of these times is that we can see the shadow. This is the holy work of the winter solstice. Lets face it, you and I cannot control the world outside. We can only control what is inside ourselves. That is our work. We change the world with our frequency. I think part of the chaotic nature of the outer world is a reflection of how many of us have been avoiding our shadow work. The game is on. Let’s do this. Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times A Hopi elder offered this wisdom for these times: “There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold onto the shore. They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly. “Know that the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take noth-

Letters to Editor ~ cont.d from page 37 However, there is one aspect of it that needs elaboration. That is: When you say “avoid vegetable oil” you need to be more specific. That’s because certain vegetable oils should definitely be avoided (eg. heat treated corn oil, canola oil, and margarine, etc) due to their content of trans fats and pesticides, and their genetically modified status, which in turn creates a tendency to increase the risk of heart disease. (While these oils are cheap for your financial budget, they are very expensive for your health.) On the other hand, certain cold pressed vegetable oils should be included in a healthy diet such as flax and olive because they reduce the risk of heart disease (perhaps they are more accurately defined as seed oils rather than vegetable oils). And one of the healthiest fats is extra virgin coconut oil which contains medium chain triglycerides that actually reduce the risk of heart disease. According to Coconut Cures by Bruce Fife, ND, “The results of [numerous] studies showed that coconut oil is far more effective than corn oil at reducing risk of heart disease.”

General Overview: December: This could be the month we have been waiting for. It’s the end of a year of breaking / broken systems – a time when cooler heads begin to prevail, although not until after the solstice on the 21st. At the least, this is a time to seriously reflect on what we know now that we didn’t know 12 months ago. The New Moon on the 14th begs for a visionary intention for our way forward. The Full Moon on the 29th shines a spotlight on this precious life: yours, mine, and everyone else’s. January: No sailing off into a bright, beautiful future just yet. Frustrations that things are moving too slowly, or that the whole task is impossible, are bound to arise this month. We are moving into a time when we must work together. Who are your people? The New Moon on the 13th asks us to set an intention regarding what we can, can’t, must, and won’t do. The Full Moon on the 28th shines its light on frustrations. Individuals must see ourselves as part of the commons – the common good, the common marketplace. (Ed. note: For an overview of Feb. 2021, see extended version https://vitalitymagazine.com/astrology/julie-simmons/) ARIES: March 20 - April 19
DEC: Look for a vision to carry you forward through the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 at the New Moon on the 14th. At the Full Moon on the 29th consider your resources, all of them. People are as much or more of a resource as money or goods. JAN: If you can step up and into the responsibilities that demand your involvement at the New Moon on the 13th do it without complaint or lament for all that has been lost. Look at your world with new eyes. The Full Moon opens you to your social realities, political and personal. Embracing the challenge beats wishing it was another way. FEB: What kind of resource are you for others? Make an intention at the New Moon on the 11th toward being available for others – your way. The Full Moon on the 27th could inspire you toward generosity beyond the usual. TAURUS: April 20 - May 20
DEC: In pondering whatever it is that keeps you from ‘walking your talk’, set your intention at the New Moon on the 14th as an acknowledgement to live closer to your true values. Obstacles are to be expected on Planet Earth. The Full Moon on the 29th is time to get comfy hanging out where you feel most cozy. JAN: The 13th is truly the beginning of your New Year. You 42

might make a resolution as you align with the New Moon to learn more about this beleaguered planet. By the Full Moon you discover your readiness to challenge the way things are in favour of the way they ought to be, with kindness. FEB: Hopes and wishes for a better world abound. Consider how you might help bring it into being at the New Moon on the 11th. The Full Moon on the 27th reminds you that you do what you do with and for the benefit of others (or not). Earth is everyone’s home. We are social animals. GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
DEC: Like it or not there is a new world coming into being and it is ours. A lot depends on our ability to believe that life is good and all beings are entitled to share in it equally. Your intention at the New Moon on the 14th might be aimed at how to relate to other living beings as equally deserving of life. JAN: E-value-ate your life, the shared parts and the parts belonging only to you. How do you see the value? Is it in the things or in the uses and perceptions of them? Step back and take stock. FEB: We all look for some kind of objective meaning outside ourselves but truly we create meaning based on our beliefs. Sit quietly around the New moon on the 11th and survey the landscape of your beliefs. They are not what you think they are with your conscious mind. The Full Moon on the 27th shines her spotlight on the entirety of your domain. CANCER: June 21 - July 21
DEC: Truly, you are dancing as fast as you can and doing the best you are able. Let the New Moon on the 14th be a validation of your efforts and an intention to do the best you can and take care of yourself as you go. The Full Moon on the 29th is about seeing who it is you do it for and with. JAN: New Year, new themes. By the 13th at the New Moon you could look with compassionate realism at your primary partner. If they can’t deal with their circumstances why should you do it for them? The Full Moon on the 28th makes it clear: They have courage to live their life to the full or they don’t. What is this to you? FEB: The Mind is a monkey but we have guts and hearts to tell us the truth. Listen to what is being said with your antennae focused on inner knowing. Your intention around the New Moon on the 11th is to allow yourself to hear. By the Full Moon on the 27th you understand people and situations with clarity. Feel free to act on what you have learned. WINTER 2020 Sun Sign Predictions ~ continued ~
LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22
DEC: Here at the end of 2020 consider what you lost and what you learned this past year. By the 14th you’re ready to make an intention to use all the ways you have to express your love for this world. At the Full Moon on the 29th let your big Leo-sized heart flood the world with generosity. We are here for one another. JAN: Whatever gives your life meaning requires commitment as you move fully into 2021 at the New Moon on the 13th. The Full Moon on the 28th reveals a rapidly changing world. You are invited to the party. Celebrate the changes you like and offer yourself as an agent of change for the rest. FEB: February 11th brings a New Moon, asking you to listen with a full heart to the ‘other’. There is much to hear. The Full Moon on the 27th shines a strong light on what you truly value, not what you think you value. Often our addictions are the doors to sacred devotions. Be courageous in acknowledging this in your own life. VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21
DEC: What could you shift in the way you engage with your family during the holidays? Who do you actually experience as ‘family’? These are questions for the New Moon on the 14th. Asking them is enough. Answering can take a lifetime. The Full Moon on the 29th is time for sweet connection with your freely chosen ones. JAN: With the New Moon on the 13th your skill at making things better shows itself to be a gift for you to cultivate in 2021. Will you? As the Moon becomes round and full on the 28th, look around at the change (or chaos) and remind yourself what you have learned in 2020. FEB: The Perfect World only exists in the mind. It’s enough at the New Moon on the 11th to align your best human-scale intentions to the world that is. By the Full Moon on the 27th take a good look in the mirror of your primary relationships. If you don’t like what you see it might be time for a change.

The Full Moon reveals many things about the strengths and weaknesses of your foundations. Be they literal or symbolic, now is a good time to take stock of where, how, and with whom you live. Make this one on the 11th deep and inner, between you and the Great Spirit who is always listening. At the Full Moon on the 27th there are many things to observe, all of which tell you something about who you are and why. Make it meaningful. Julie Simmons is a practising astrologer in Toronto. PETITION CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT OF COVID VACCINE RUSHED TO MARKET
A petition has been filed by a member of the public regarding COVID-19 vaccine safety and vaccine mandates, directed to the Government of Canada. The petition brings the lack of proper safety testing, the lack of independent oversight, the significant risks of coronavirus vaccines, the experimental nature of a COVID-19 vaccine, and the fact that COVID-19 vaccines are not designed to prevent infection to the attention of Members of Parliament and those who sign the petition The petition calls for an independent vaccine approval review process by individuals who have no conflicts of interest, for safety testing standards that meet or exceed those for other pharmaceutical products, for preservation of informed choice, and no coercion or mandates for compliance, and for a pharmaceuticalfunded vaccine injury compensation program. According to The Covid Report by Nelle Maxey* COVID-19 has a death rate of 0.024%, while influenza and pneumonia have a death rate of 0.13%. Therefore, a fact-based risk assessment of SARS-CoV-19 virus impact does not justify an expensive population-wide www.vitalitymagazine.com
application of a warp-speed, risk-laden, potentially DNAmodifying vaccine. (*https://tinyurl.com/covid reportMaxey) We request you send this petition to your friends and supporters asking them to sign and share with their friends and contacts. The petition can be signed online here: https://tinyurl.com/VCC covidpetition or send email to: London@vaccinechoice canada.com (It is open for signing until Feb. 1st, 2021) ELECTROSENSITIVE SOCIETY AIMS TO HELP PEOPLE WITH EHS
The Electrosensitive Society is dedicated to helping people who have electro-hypersensitivity (EHS). They help people to find medical specialists familiar with EHS, remediation specialists who can help reduce EMF exposure, and they help people to find and/or create low EMF zones where they can comfortably live, work and better enjoy life. According to the Canadian Human Rights Commission report written by Margaret E. Sears in 2007, The Medical Perspective on Environmental Sensitivities, “Approximately 3% of Canadians have been diagnosed with environmental sensitivities. They usually experience neurological impairments, and often experience other symptoms including runny eyes and nose, headaches, fatigue, pain and breathing and digestive problems.” Environmental sensitivities may develop gradually after chronic exposure to relatively low levels of
chemicals as seen in “sick buildings,” or suddenly after a major exposure to an environmental disaster or a chemical spill. This condition may be initiated by one or a combination of environmental factors such as mould, pesticides, solvents, chemicals off-gassing from carpets or furnishings, or electromagnetic phenomena. Those who suffer from EHS also often suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity as well. Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is an environmentally-induced disability that has been around for the past 100 plus years. It has gone by different names including neurasthenia (weakening of the nervous system), microwave sickness, radio wave illness, screen dermatitis, electromagnetic sensitivity, as well as idiopathic environmental intolerance. Some call it rapid aging syndrome as this represents the symptoms most people experience who are sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies. For more information read the book ElectromagneticSensitivity and Electromagnetic-Hypersensitivity, by Michael Bevington (2010). For those wishing to see the studies on EHS, get the 4th edition (2018) that has more than 2000 references documenting the biological effects of EMF/EMR exposure. Contact them by email: info@electrosensitivesociety.com or through their website with questions / concerns as they do provide email and phone consultations. https://www.electrosensitivesociety.com VITALITY MAGAZINE – WINTER 2020
