Spring Cleaning with Pure Essential Oils The benefits of essential oils can seem endless. Along with the wonderful aroma they bring to any space and the memories they evoke, they are fantastic cleaning agents, in part due to their disinfecting properties. Replacing the harsh chemical cleaners in your home with what nature provides is a beautiful thing. Purify your bathroom and kitchen with the powerful properties of tea tree, oregano or lemon oil. Use sweet and spicy cinnamon oil in the mop bucket to refresh and leave your home smelling like a scented candle. As the seasons change, NOW®’s Nature’s Shield Protective Essential Oil blend is ideal in every room. Pesky critters and insects don’t enjoy the scent of refreshing peppermint oil. Create a room spray and use it around windows and doors as well as countertops. Choose from a variety of NOW® ultrasonic diffusers to enjoy your favourite scent even after the cleaning is done.

NOW’s selection of quality essential oils are the perfect solution for a naturally clean home. For more information on NOW® Essential Oils and recipe ideas, visit www.nowfoods.ca/essential-oils

IN THE LAST TWELVE

MONTHS I LEARNED

MY BIGGEST LIFE LESSON. by Holly Caplan

In the last twelve months I learned my biggest life lesson. I learned to be kind to myself. As women do, I put a lot of pressure on myself, to be a great mom, employee, daughter, friend, sister and spouse. I put myself through so much stress and worry that I couldn’t appreciate one moment to the next. It has taken me years to figure out that I am in charge of my destiny, well -being and self- love. For the first time I’m focusing on steps to cultivate my big lessons and make them part of what I do every day.

1 TAKE TIME TO REFLECT

Consider what has been positive for you and what has not. Maybe you had a work project that didn’t go as well as you would have liked, or perhaps there was a situation with a family member you could have handled better. Whatever it was, think about what would you do differently today. Without reflection you are in danger of missing the lesson and possibly repeating it again.

2 WRITE IT INTO ACTION

I’m a big believer of writing into action. Once you write something down on paper it is a commitment to yourself and only you are accountable. Write into action this year by writing down your personal or professional goals and think of what you want to achieve in your near future. It could be a promotion at work, writing that book, or finally getting on a plane to London. Grab a notebook, sit in your favourite spot and give yourself the space to consider what exactly it is that you want to cast for yourself this year.

3 DON’T DISTRESS OVER STRESS

It’s not worth it. Heart palpitations and cussing up a storm because you are late picking up the kids are not worth the stress. I’m convinced that because I’ve engaged in these behaviors (especially the cussing part) that I have shaved

years off my life. My lesson? Despite all of my stressing, the outcome was the same. So, know that even in the most stressful moments, those feelings will eventually pass. Having this perspective will help you to breathe a little easier and handle the challenges with ease and grace.

4 PLAN YOUR VACATION TIME NOW

Don’t procrastinate! Put your vacation days into your calendar now, even if you don’t know where you will be going yet. Doesn’t matter if you go to a beach or decide to do a staycation. Planning for vacation now helps to ensure your work life balance is in check and you have something to look forward to. As a result, you will be more productive and refreshed year round; so don’t deny yourself of this.

5 REWARD YOURSELF

Admittedly, I just started doing this in my life. I never used to let myself experience a reward for my hard work as I was already onto the next thing. I didn’t allow myself the space to feel positive from a deal I closed or the completion of a creative project, which then led to negative thinking and feeling. Thus, I have learned to reward myself, to take a little time out to celebrate the mini milestones that come along our path and I encourage others to do the same. Your reward may come in the form of drinks with friends, a new bag, or just sitting in silence. Regardless, reward yourself and allow yourself the positivity. Do you know what positivity leads to? More positivity. And remember, always be kind to yourself! Holly Caplan is a career coach, workplace expert and author. CONTROL AND TREATMENT USING AYURVEDIC RECIPES

A

n increasing number of adults can no longer count on pimple-free skin as a perk of aging. “Adult acne is on the rise,” notes Dr. Meryl Joerg, a dermatologist with Advanced Dermatology PC. “And it can carry serious psychological tolls including depression and disruption of our ability to fully participate in life.” In the United States alone, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has reported that as many as 50 million people suffering with acne, which in its severe form can be disfiguring and leave scars. While researchers are still piecing together the puzzle of what causes the condition, the science community aknowledge that genetics and hormones is a precursor with hormonal fluctuation with aging. Of course you can always rely on Mother Nature and the power of Ayur vedic Treatment, Although you must remember to also keep the basics such as: treating skin problems with a gentle touch. “We can’t scrub acne away. In fact, over-cleansing will exacerbate problem skin by stripping essential oils. Using gentle, non-soap cleansers is key, as is moisturizing. You should look for the term ‘non-comedogenic,’ which means that the product has been designed so that it doesn’t clog pores.” Says Dr. Kaur.

Hormones can help. “Our understanding of hormones’ role has supported the ability to use combined oral contraceptives to treat. Modulating the levels of female hormones can adjust the androgens that are tied to acne.” Below are some natural ingredients that are recognized for the treatment of skin problems, as they also manage hormonal levels. ROSE WATER FOR ACNE It is an ancient remedy that helps cure acne. You can easily prepare rose water at home with rose petals and save your skin from acne production. NEEM One of the best herbal solution for acne is Neem. Even the bark and the leaves of the Neem tree is rich in anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which can help in healing the infection of the skin and heal acne. Prepare a mask by making a thin paste of Neem leaves and mixed with lemon juice and apply it on a clean face. Results have been seen in a few days. TULSI Also known as holy basil, this can bless your skin with the goodness of herbs. You need to chew of a few handful of freshly plucked leaves.

Holy basil helps to clear your blood. You can also prepare a magical herbal pack by mixing 3 tablespoons of basil leaves with lukewarm water. Need to be applied for 10 minutes daily to attack the acne from the roots. FEMALE GINSENG It is a Chinese herb that is considered as an amazing remedy for treating the condition as it slows down and controls the excessive secretion of androgen. The ingredients present in it are similar to those present in estrogen and it limits the oil production, which further helps to get relief.

GARLIC Garlic has disinfectant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that makes it an effective and powerful herbal solution to treat acne. Just take pod of raw garlic and rub it over your skin and acne for 5 to 6 times in a day which will give relief from the inflammation and fasten the healing process. ALOE VERA It will hydrate your skin and lighten your complexion as it is packed with anti-bacterial properties. Take it directly from the leaf of the aloe vera plant and it will provide relief from the irritated skin instantly.

RED CLOVER Clear out the impurities of the skin and cleanse your blood with the natural detoxification power of red clover. Make sure that you consume red clover daily in order to clear your skin from within and help your facial skin rejuvenate. Sukhwinder Singh, one of the most respected Ayurvedic expert prepared a few easy to do herbal remedy for acne recipies.

So is this miracle from nature that mystically miraculous, or is there an underlying reason for such broad activity? One main reason curcumin can be applied with reasonable effect to treat many of these conditions is because inflammation is a fundamental process or chemistry that is common to most if not every disease we face, and this includes diseases like depression that appears to be far removed from our mainstream notion of inflammation. Most drugs we use to treat disease today are effective at neutralizing this inflammatory activity in target tissues or cells. Research shows curcumin to be a mildly effective inhibitor of key proteins involved in the escalation of inflammation. As a result, it can be used to take the edge off some of these disorders. Nevertheless, regular old curcumin (even curcumin 95 per cent) is not reliable and is usually not potent enough to deal with deeply rooted inflammation. Treatment results with curcumin are simply not reliable nor are they precisely repeatable. The reason is that every curcumin extract is comprised of curcuminoids. Within that 95% extract, three curcuminoids make up the 95 per cent concentration. The problem is, upon extracting curcumin these underlying curcuminoid proportions fluctuate and do so even for the same brand from batch to batch or lot to lot. Our recent research has been focused on separating, isolating and mapping the pharmacology of these curcuminoid components to

/

V I VA

see how they each contribute to the anti-inflammatory and other subcellular activities that help neutralize disease symptoms. The findings have led to game-changing insight. These curcuminoids can each have distinct pharmacological activity inside our cells. Even if you are certain you are buying a 95 per cent extract every time, you do not have insight into how the underlying curcuminoid proportions have changed from your previous batch to alter the activity of your curcumin. Our research shows some of this activity to be synergistic to an intended therapeutic outcome. However, in other situations where the curcuminoid proportions shift it can oppose an intended effect. Sometimes you get a potent 95 per cent extract and other times you get a less effective one. The amazing knowledge to come out of this pharmaceutical research with these curcuminoids is a clearer understanding of the mechanism by which curcumin delivers its activity. Moreover, it has allowed us to stabilize and create proportions of these underlying curcuminoids that serve our targets with greater precision and make certain this activity is consistent from lot to lot. The result of this novel standard of curcumin pharmacology that is now patented is BioBDMC30™ – now reliable; more effective, and consistent activity for curcumin that also exceeds 95 per cent concentration. BioBDMC30™ is the new household name.

Non-Invasive Screening Helps Prevent Liver Disease By Juan Pablo Frias, M.D., Medical Director and Principal Investigator, National Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA.

P

eople with diabetes should be talking to their doctors about liver health. Unfortunately, few people living with diabetes focus on the connection between liver disease and type 2 diabetes — but they should. In fact, between 50 to 70 per cent of those with type 2 will develop fatty liver disease.

Typically, NAFLD carries no symptoms unless in an advanced stage. Sometimes abnormal liver tests appear during a routine blood test and your doctor might suggest further testing. Healthcare providers might also order an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to see if your liver is abnormal, but none of these tests alone are the standard for diagnosing NAFLD.

The most common liver disease, asymptomatic non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is inextricably linked with type 2 diabetes. Because of the liver’s central role in so many body processes, excessive fat in the liver can have a ripple effect. It is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and can make type 2 diabetes more difficult to treat.

NAFLD is typically diagnosed based upon evidence of increased liver fat with an imaging procedure such as an ultrasound and the elimination of other disorders that may lead to fatty liver. In some cases, a liver biopsy is ordered to look for the extent of inflammation, liver damage, or scarring. Nevertheless, early detection is critical becauseif caught in the early stages and treated with by lifestyle changes leading to weight loss, liver fat can be reduced and NAFLD may be reversed.

NAFLD is characterized by a build-up of fat in the liver that’s unrelated to excessive alcohol intake. Some persons have excessive liver fat buildup without significant liver damage, so-called non-alcoholic fatty liver [NAFL] or “isolated steatosis.” In others, the liver fat causes inflammation and liver cell damage. This condition is more serious and is termed non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). It is estimated that about 20 per cent of patients with NAFL will progress to NASH. Without treatment, in some patients, NASH can progress to cirrhosis (chronic scarring and damage), liver failure, and possibly liver cancer. NAFLD IS A COMPLICATED CONDITION, AND IS ASSOCIATED WITH: • Overweight or obese; • Insulin resistance (a condition in which the body doesn’t use its own insulin properly); • High blood sugar levels (prediabetes or type 2 diabetes); • High levels of fat, called triglycerides, in the blood; • Sleep apnea; • Polycystic ovary syndrome.

Screening and early detection of NAFLD can help to create actions that may prevent more serious conditions such as end-stage liver disease or liver cancer. Fortunately, there’s been growing adoption of new non-invasive screening methods that can detect NAFLD in the absence of indications or warning signs. NON-INVASIVE SCREENING NOW AVAILABLE This new painless approach can be performed in the doctor’s office as part of an annual exam, and is often covered by Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance plans. FibroScan®, for example, is a 10-minute painless tool that measures your liver fat and liver stiffness (associated with fibrosis and cirrhosis). FibroScan emits a pulse of energy, which you may feel as a slight vibration on your skin. FibroScan then measures the speed of this energy and immediately provides this information to your physician, who then uses it as part of a broader evaluation of your liver health.

Annual screening and a healthy lifestyle are the best prevention.

When included as part of your overall health assessment, FibroScan can provide your healthcare provider valuable information on your liver health, and for many patients, remove the need for a painful liver biopsy or further testing. Test scores also provide information the physician needs to track your liver health over time, and to make a referral to a specialist or recommend additional assessments in the event that your liver health changes. In fact, a yearly NAFLD screening may eventually become standard practice similar to a mammography or A1C blood sugar testing.

•D iet: The Mediterranean diet is higher in monounsaturated fatty acids. This is helpful for both diabetes management and reducing the risk of heart disease. Limiting the intake of refined carbohydrate foods, such as sugary foods and high-fructose corn syrup, and replacing some carb intake with monounsaturated fat (found in olive oil and nuts) can also be elpful. Compliance with a calorie-restricted diet is associated with mobilization of liver fat. The overall sustainability of weight loss is most important, rather than the specific composition of the diet.

LIFESTYLE CHANGE AND MEDICATION CHECKLIST According to The Diagnosis and Management of NAFLD: Practice Guidance from the AASLD, the following lifestyle changes can help reduce the amount of fat in a patient’s liver:

• Limit alcohol consumption: NAFLD isn’t caused by drinking alcohol, but alcohol can make the condition worse, and people should seek advice from their doctor on how to avoid it altogether.

• Weight loss: Overall weight loss is the key to improving NAFLD and NASH. Losing between 5 – 10 percent of weight helps to improve fat buildup, liver cell injury, and inflammation. Patients should consult their healthcare provider or dietician for recommendations about an appropriate diet.

UNDERSTAND YOUR LIVER HEALTH With advances in painless tools to assess and monitor your liver, it is now possible to track liver health as part of your overall health assessment. This may be especially important for people living with type 2 diabetes, where excess liver fat has been associated with increased complications and mortality. Learn more about your liver, how it may be affecting your overall health, and how a healthy lifestyle can improve your liver health.

• Exercise: Exercise helps to indirectly prevent and help treat NAFLD by helping with weight reduction, improving insulin sensitivity, improving blood sugar control, and lowering the risk for heart disease. • Medicines: Although there are currently no medications approved by FDA for NAFLD, a certain type of diabetes pill — thiazolidinediones (TZDs) — boosts insulin sensitivity and has been shown to reduce liver fat and inflammation.

Need a

BOOST? The Unique Vitamin C Formula that Promotes Whole Body Health

W

hen looking for natural ways to safely and gently support the immune system, many people turn to vitamin C, and for good reason. Since first being isolated nearly a century ago, this powerful nutrient has proven the ability to help fight colds and infections. But the reality is, the benefits of vitamin C go far beyond simply strengthening the immune system. In fact, it’s shown the ability to impact everything from allergies and low energy levels to wound healing and tissue repair. However, tapping into these wide-ranging benefits is not as simple as reaching for the closest bottle of vitamin C capsules or chewable tablets. As we’ll discuss, not all supplemental forms of vitamin C are created equal, with different forms possessing often greatly varied levels of effectiveness and tolerability. That said, let’s go back to the basics: Vitamin C plays a role in numerous processes in the human body, and as we don’t have the ability to store it or produce it ourselves, we require a constant supply. It’s needed for the production of collagen, which is essential for the

56

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SUMMER 2019 ISSUE

H E A LT H

maintenance of our skin, blood vessels and joints. The nutrient is also required for energy production, with studies showing a link between vitamin C supplementation and reduced fatigue and muscle pain. As a potent antioxidant, vitamin C helps to reduce cell damage, a quality that makes it a supplement worth considering for issues including post-surgical wound healing and even cancer support. Many individuals suffering from allergies have also seen great improvement after taking vitamin C, with reduction in symptoms like cough, stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes. Research into this ability has shown that vitamin C supplementation may help regulate levels of histamine, a key trigger for the inflammatory process. And we haven’t even gotten to its impact on the immune system. Not surprisingly, decades of clinical research has illustrated its ability to reduce the duration and severity of colds and flus, and strengthen immunity. In short, the clinically-supported benefits of vitamin C are wide ranging, truly supporting whole body health. However, as previously mentioned, ensuring the appropriate form and dosage of vitamin C is essential to maximizing its benefits. Unfortunately, the vast majority of vitamin C supplements exist in the form of ascorbic acid. As an acidic compound, it may lead to gastric discomfort when taken in high dosages (often the very dosages needed to see benefit). In contrast, a non-acidic vitamin C supplement such as the calcium ascorbate form seen in Ester-C® has shown much greater tolerability. In addition to being better tolerated than standard vitamin C supplements, the Ester-C® form has also demonstrated enhanced, prolonged immune system stimulation. Clinical studies have shown that taking the calcium ascorbate form resulted in a full 24 hours of immune system

S P O N S O R E D

/

V I VA

stimulation, significantly greater than the eight hours provided by ascorbic acid. The reason for this is the fact that Ester-C® is the only vitamin C that contains the active metabolites threonate and furanone, breakdown products that help to enhance cellular absorption and retention. As we’ve discussed, when taken on its own, Ester-C® can certainly promote optimal health in a wide variety of areas. However, we often require support that goes beyond what even the highest quality vitamin C supplement can offer. That’s where Ester-C® Energy Boost comes in. Delivering 1000 mg of Ester-C® per serving, it’s formulated for everyone from the high performance athlete or weekend warrior to those just looking to stay on top of a hectic schedule. Energy Boost also contains a comprehensive array of B vitamins, to combat fatigue and sluggishness while enhancing stamina and mental clarity. These essential vitamins also play a key role in stress management, as well as mood and nervous system support. Also included in each serving of Ester-C® Energy Boost is an electrolyte blend, with calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. This helps to replenish the minerals lost through exertion, stress or exercise, and also aids in maintaining muscle and bone health. What’s even better, is that this great-tasting, non-effervescent drink mix dissolves easily in water, and comes in convenient, single serving packets. It’s also naturally sweetened and low calorie, non GMO and gluten free, for high quality nutrition you can feel good about. And with four great-tasting flavours: orange, lemon-lime, piña colada and wildberry, there’s an Energy Boost for everyone. So what makes Ester-C® Energy Boost different from the competition? The answer is simple: It’s quality, purity,

effectiveness and taste. Energy Boost is the only vitamin C drink mix formulated with the Ester-C® form of vitamin C, for better, more long-lasting immune support, without the discomfort of the ascorbic acid form. In addition, some competitors fail to include a full complement of B vitamins in their formulas, while others can’t compete with the dosing of Energy Boost’s minerals, in some cases containing less than half of the calcium found in Energy Boost. It should also be mentioned that many people turn to pre-made energy drinks to get a little more pep. Once again, put head-to-head against Ester-C® Energy Boost, the choice is clear. While they may certainly help to temporarily bring up energy, many commercially available energy drinks contain five or six times the sugar and roughly four times the calories in a serving of Energy Boost. Furthermore, they often contain high amounts of caffeine, and are rarely made with non GMO ingredients. Finally, they simply cost more up to five times the cost of an Energy Boost packet. In summary, whether you’re looking to strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, keep seasonal allergies in check, or simply live a healthier life, Ester-C® Energy Boost has what you’re looking for. With single serving packets that fit easily in your backpack, work bag, or coat pocket, it’s never been easier to feel great, anytime, anywhere.

DR. THALIA CHARNEY, ND, MA

T

he Digital world has been one of the greatest advancement of human evolution so as the impact it has had on our vision and the general consent to the importance of investing into vision health. We have 11 million sensory receptors, 10 million of which are dedicated to our sight and that are constantly stimulated by all the technological devices that we depend on in this era. Experts estimate that half of our brain resources at any given time are used on vision. In fact, it is also thought by many that visual cues hold the most significant influence on our behavior. Therefore, taking care of our vision health is a necessary step to take for better life quality and well-being. The number one cause of blindness today is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), trailing behind diabetic neuropathy, glaucoma and cataracts. But beyond these more serious issues are more common problems, such as eye strain and dryness. Depending on the particular issue, the most common risk factors for a failing eye health are genetics, age (especially with AMD), poor diet, overuse, excessive exposure to sunlight and artificial indoor lights. BLINDNESS CAUSED BY LIGHT Although, sunlight is necessary to provide vitamin D and maintain our natural sleep-wake cycles, in excess ultraviolet (UV) light can damage the front of our eyes (the lens) and high energy blue light can damage the macula at the back of our eye (a risk factor for AMD). The modern world exposes us to abnormally high levels of blue light from computer and cell phone screens and LED lights (which are replacing less energy efficient but safer incandescent lights). Other contributing factors include a thinning ozone layer, photosensitizing drugs, tanning beds and sunlamps. Protect your eyes outdoors with sunglasses that block UVB light (UV 400 glasses) and by wearing blue blocking glasses . Another way to protect your eyes from damaging lights can be through the controlling of your mobile phone settings in order to reduce the blue light from your screens or consider finding some old-fashioned incandescent lights for your work area.

58

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SUMMER 2019 ISSUE

ANTIOXIDANTS AND EYESIGHT The eyes are inevitably exposed to damaging free radicals every day via visible light and radiation. A deficiency of antioxidants, which help quench the free radicals of light, can put individuals at a higher risk for cataracts, as well as AMD. The most important antioxidants to quench these free radicals are vitamin E, glutathione, vitamin C and vitamin E. In addition, the antioxidant Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown in preliminary studies to reduce the incidence of glaucoma and cataracts. Other than it being a powerful antioxidant, it also has the ability to recycle, and thus extend the life of most of the other antioxidants mentioned. A wide variety of studies on the herb Ginkgo Biloba, have also found this herb to have positive effects in multiple routes of oxidative and metabolic damage to the eyes. All of these antioxidants are used therapeutically for the eyes. DIETARY CAROTENOIDS There are specific plant nutrients (phytonutrients) called carotenoids that have proven to be essential to eye health. Carotenoids are plant pigments that give the yellow colour to foods such as yellow corn, squash, or marigold flowers. These pigments can be found concentrated in the macula, a small light sensitive area at the back of the eye, responsible for much of one’s detailed central vision. While there are hundreds of naturally occurring carotenoids, only two of them have been found in the human eye: Lutein and zeaxanthin. Eye carotenoids absorb excess and damaging high-energy light (namely the blue spectrum) and quench free radicals. Various studies have shown the importance of lutein in relation to advanced AMD as well as other aspects of vision, such as glare reduction (necessary when looking at headlights) or contrast sensitivity (useful to see on a cloudy day). Lutein and zeaxanthin are in the AREDS2 formula recommended in mainstream medicine for those with advanced AMD and are used in just about any natural eye formula. TIPS FOR DRY EYES

H E A LT H

/

V I VA

If you have ever experienced sensations such as grittiness, burning, stinging and tearing in the eye, it is likely that you have eye dryness. Our eyes secrete tears from three different glands, which ideally act as a natural lubricant. Eye dryness is still one of the most common problems associated with vision and eye health and can be a result of nutrient deficiencies (such as vitamin A or omega-3 fats), environmental factors (smoke, wind, dry air and screen time), contacts, diabetes, autoimmune disease (Sjogren’s Disease and scleroderma), Meibomian gland dysfunction and medications (diuretics, antihistamines, BCP and antidepressants). Some Natural treatments which can be helpful are: Sea Buckthorn (a natural source of Omega-7), Red Clover Extract (may help with menopausal related dry eyes), castor oil drops (historically used as “false tears”) and vitamin A (where a deficiency exists). Omega-3 Fatty Acids are often used for dry eyes or skin. For example, a study has shown that using 2,000 mg of flaxseed oil for the period of two months does help and better eye dryness. Another useful strategy during screen time is to look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes –“The 20-20-20 Rule”. TIPS FOR CATARACTS We all have a “lens” in our eyes. This lens can become damaged and consequently opaque, effecting the ability for light to enter the eye. By far, the two most common risk factors are age (likely related to long-term oxidative damage) and disorders of carbohydrate metabolism (especially diabetes). Having an adequate reserve of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, ALA, glutathione, vitamin E, is one way to lower our risk for any oxidative damage to the eye. A very large and renowned study called AREDS2 concluded that carotenoids Lutein and Zeaxanthin may reduce the risk of developing lens opacities in persons with low dietary intake. For those with diabetes related cataracts, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Quercetin mimic the role of prescription aldose reductase inhibitors used to reduce the conversion of excess glucose to sorbitol in the eye, as sorbitol accumulation prevents antioxidants from being able to permeate the lens of the eyes. EYE INSURANCE Healthy eyes require a comprehensive approach including a diet high in colorful vegetables and fruits, being mindful of time spent in front of monitors, protecting ourselves from UV and blue lights, and taking advantage of supplements known to reduce free radical damage, which provide us with the necessary eye protective pigments. Sophie Monk has experienced a great deal throughout her ever-evolving career. From music to acting and magazine covers, Sophie’s diverse accomplishments are a testament to her resiliency in the entertainment industry. Reinventing herself time and time again, showcasing not only her beauty but her mental toughness and smart business acumen, Sophie is genuinely in a league of her own. In an industry such as entertainment, where stars are born every 15 minutes, staying relevant is no easy task. Somehow, Sophie has been determined to continue to thrive in a field that is known to be extremely harsh and unforgiving. As the host of the immensely popular Australian reality show “Love Island” and a former contestant of “The Bachelorette,” ironically, finding love has been no easy task. No stranger to heartbreak, Monk had bounced back stronger than ever from relationship hardships to find love when she was least expecting it.

Sophie revealed her plans to marry new boyfriend Joshua Gross after meeting him on a long-haul flight from Europe to Australia a year ago.

After going through a very public breakup after her appearance on “The Bachelorette” Monk was content in helping others find love instead of making it her priority. “This is the first time I have not been looking, and that’s when everyone says [love] happens,” Monk says. “Because, before now, I was always looking, I loved the excitement of it all.” Reflecting on her previous relationships, Sophie added; ”I have waited and gone through so much s**t to meet someone so good.” HEALTH: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle during a busy schedule is key to achieving any fitness goals. Being in the public eye comes with a certain amount of pressure to look a certain way, Sophie has managed to find a healthy balance while not losing her sanity in the process. “I’ve done my best to live a healthy lifestyle. There was a moment where I would leave exercising to when I got home from travelling, and now I try to maintain what I can every day.”

Having become a vegetarian when she was 18, Sophie has not only made health-conscious decisions but ethical choices that affect the long-term well-being of the planet. In October 2007, Monk began appearing in a campaign for PETA to promote people becoming vegetarian. “There’s no doubt in my mind that going vegetarian has made me feel better not only physically but also because I learned about the suffering of animals who are raised and killed for food. I feel good knowing that I’m not contributing to that,” Monk says. Australian owned and operated, healthy snack foods company Slim Secrets named Sophie Monk as their brand ambassador and social media influencer in 2018. BUTTERNUT SQUASH PIZZA SERVES: Makes one 14-inch pizza 1 portion (½ batch) Perfect Pizza Dough*

Butternut squash is one of those vegetables that is often overlooked but is actually a very versatile ingredient. In the past, we’ve used it in everything from mac ’n’ cheese to a tart filling. But we prefer it this way: as a creamy, luscious base for this delectable winter-inspired pizza. BUTTERNUT SQUASH PURÉE: • 1 medium butternut squash, halved and seeded • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tsp Herbed Salt** • 2 garlic cloves TOPPINGS: • 1/3 cup red bell pepper • 1/3 cup yellow bell pepper • 1/3 cup green bell pepper • 1/4 fennel bulb, thinly sliced • 3½ oz pancetta, thinly sliced • 1/2 cup fior di latte cheese • Microgreens, to garnish (optional) • Fennel fronds, to garnish PREPARE PIZZA DOUGH. 1. Make purée: Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Score the flesh of the butternut squash and drizzle with olive oil. 3. Sprinkle with herbed salt. Tuck a garlic clove inside each squash half and place cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until fork-tender. Remove from oven and let cool at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes. Using a large spoon, carefully scoop out the cooked squash and garlic and transfer to a food processor. Blend until completely smooth. Set aside until needed. Grill peppers: Heat your barbecue or grill pan to medium-high. Grill bell peppers on all sides until they’re nice and charred. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into large pieces, discarding seeds and veins. Set aside. 4. Assemble pizza: Preheat oven to 450°F. Grease a pizza pan or baking sheet and set aside. 5. Stretch dough out to desired pizza-base size and place on prepared pan. Spread the butternut squash purée over the dough, leaving room around the edge for the crust. Top with charred bell peppers, sliced fennel and pancetta. Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until the crust is golden and crispy. 6. Remove the pan from oven and top pizza with torn chunks of fior di latte. Bake for another 2 to 3 minutes, until cheese is melted. Remove from oven and top with microgreens (if using) and fennel fronds. Let cool for 1 to 2 minutes before serving.

Sumptuous, comforting, melt-in-your mouth chicken, gentle spice and delicious, buttery aubergines. With a glass of cold white wine, it’s pure joy. INGREDIENTS: • 3 aubergines (750g total) • 1 x 1.4 kg whole free-range chicken • olive oil • 2 cloves of garlic • 3 small fresh red chillies • 1 cinnamon stick • 4 sprigs of fresh woody herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, bay • 50g baby capers in brine • 2 red onions • 200g ripe cherry tomatoes • 50g pine nuts • 2 lemons • 4 sprigs of fresh basil

DIRECTIONS: 1. Trim the aubergines, chop into random 5cm chunks and wedges, place in a large bowl and season generously from a height with sea salt. Put aside. 2. Joint the chicken. Drizzle all the pieces with oil, place in a large shallow pan on a medium-high heat, skin side down, to get golden on all sides, then remove to a large platter. Wipe the salt off the aubergines and add to the pan, turning until lightly golden on all sides. Remove the aubergines to the platter and reduce the heat under the pan to low. Peel and slice the garlic, prick the chillies and place both in the pan with the cinnamon, woody herbs and capers. Stir and fry for a couple of minutes while you peel and finely slice the onions, then stir them into the pan, too. 3. Cook for 15 minutes, or until starting to caramelize, stirring occasionally. 4. Preheat the oven to 180º C . Squeeze the tomatoes in a bowl of water to remove the seeds – a fine nonna trick to prevent you getting splattered. Then, tear them into the pan. Put the chicken and aubergines back in, drizzle over any resting juices, then pour in 600 ml of water. Sprinkle over the pine nuts, then squeeze over the lemon juice. Cook at the bottom of the oven for 45 minutes, or until golden. Pick over the basil leaves and serve with a nice big bowl of lemony couscous. GRILLED APRICOT SALAD SERVES: 4 / TOTAL TIME: 25 minutes

Years ago, when I first learnt to appreciate the way Italians use fruit in salads, it changed my concept of a salad for good. It took it from a wimpy side dish to a true gastronomic experience. This recipe is about celebrating textures and brightness. You could swap in other seasonal stone fruit. INGREDIENTS: • 8 ripe apricots • 8 sprigs of fresh thyme, ideally the flowering kind • olive oil • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar • extra virgin olive oil • 1 big pinch of pink peppercorns • 1/2 a red onion • 2 large handfuls of salad leaves, such as escarole, Castelfranco, wild rocket • 4 slices of higher-welfare prosciutto • 125g ball of mozzarella cheese • 1 lemon

DIRECTIONS: 1. Put a griddle pan on a high heat. Halve and de-stone the apricots. Then, on a platter toss with half the thyme sprigs and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place the dressed fruit cut side down on the hot griddle for 6 minutes, or until charred and caramelized, turning halfway. 2. Meanwhile, pour the vinegar on to the platter with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Crush and crumble the pink peppercorns over the platter, then peel, very finely slice and sprinkle over the onion, giving it a little mix in the dressing to lightly pickle it. 3.Pick through your salad leaves, tearing or slicing the larger ones. Add to the platter and gently toss together, then season to perfection. Tear the prosciutto and it drape over in waves. Gently tear open the mozzarella, season with sea salt, black pepper, a fine grating of lemon zest and a few drips of extra virgin olive oil, then tear over the salad. Place your grilled apricots in and around the salad, sprinkling over any crispy thyme leaves and the remaining leaves and flowers. 4. Drizzle with a tiny bit more extra virgin olive oil, then serve.

HEIRLOOM TOMATO PHYLLO TART SERVES: 8 to 10

INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 cup fresh ricotta cheese • 1/2 cup mascarpone cheese • 1 large egg yolk • 2 tbsp fresh lemon zest • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves • 1 tsp flaky sea salt • 10 sheets of phyllo pastry, thawed if frozen • 1/4 cup olive oil or melted butter • 1/2 lb assorted heirloom tomatoes, cut into ½-inch-thick slices • 2 to 3 tbsp balsamic crema (Tip: Balsamic crema is reduced balsamic vinegar and has a rich, syrupy consistency. You can find it in most grocery stores, or make your own by simmering balsamic vinegar on medium heat until it‘s reduced by about half. Keeps in an airtight jar for up to 3 months.) • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, to garnish

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a medium bowl, mix together ricotta, mascarpone, egg yolk, lemon zest, thyme and salt. Stir until well combined, then set aside. 3. Using a pastry brush, coat each layer of phyllo pastry with olive oil, stacking one on top of the other on the prepared baking sheet until you have 10 layers. 4. Spread the ricotta and mascarpone filling across the center of the top layer, leaving a 1-inch border all around. Top with a single layer of sliced tomatoes. Fold up the edges of the phyllo, all the way around. Brush the top edges with a bit more oil. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until golden brown around the edges. 5. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes (see Tip). Drizzle with balsamic crema and top with fresh basil. Cut into squares and serve. Tip: If any excess liquid remains on top of your tart after baking, do not fear! Simply blot it with clean paper towel to remove.

WHAT KEEPS YOU EATING A BALANCED DIET? The way that I have felt, both mentally and physically, ever since I began prioritizing my health and nutrition, definitely keeps me motivated to maintain a balanced diet. Over the last eight years, my body has transformed into a vessel through which I feel I can accomplish anything, and of that, I am proud. ANY FOOD DISLIKES? I do not like anything pickled. If ever I were to be pregnant and you caught me eating pickles, look closely…as there is no way that would be me!

WHAT’S IN YOUR FRIDGE?

ANASTASIA

OCCUPATION? R&B/Pop Singer-Songwriter and Actress, known for her Billboard-featured and GRAMMY-shortlisted EP, “Best Life”, and for her roles on Black-ish, Scandal and My Worst Nightmare, among others TV series. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET FOOD VICE? Chocolate chip cookies. I like to think that I sneak them out of the box but it is not my best-kept secret. DO YOU HAVE A SECRET COLD REMEDY THAT YOUR DAD/ MOM OR GRANDMOTHER SHARED WITH YOU? I can always count on a cup of green tea with honey, ginger and lemon. It may not cure the common cold, but it definitely soothes my symptoms. When I am feeling especially congested, I add a dash of cayenne. The pepper gives the sinuses just the kick they need. WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE COMFORT FOOD? My paternal grandmother’s Bahamian baked macaroni and cheese is heaven-sent and makes for the perfect comfort food or celebratory dish.Though pizza and brown sugar bubble tea come in a close second. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FOOD CHALLENGE? My biggest food challenge is sticking to the vegetarian and vegan dishes that I love while around my family of carnivores. 72

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SUMMER 2019 ISSUE

HAVE YOU OMITTED ANY FOOD FROM YOUR DIET? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY? I omitted processed foods, sodas and most juices from my diet several years ago. The unhealthy chemicals and added sugars were causing my skin to breakout and causing me to gain weight unnecessarily. I also had very low-energy. It was a dietary change that needed to be made and I have never looked back. WHAT MUST YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR FRIDGE? Water. Water is an essential neccessity of life, but I always have a little San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa in stock for those moments when I’m craving something sweeter. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GO-TO MEALS? Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE Italian food – eggplant parmigiana, pasta and pizza. Though, I am an equal proponent of quality salads. My go-to salad consists of mixed greens, avocado, tomato, quinoa, goat cheese and chicken, tossed in avocado-lemon or honey mustard dressing. WHAT IS THE STRANGEST FOOD YOU’VE EVER TRIED, AND WHAT WAS YOUR VERDICT? The most adventurous meal I have ever had is Cow Intestine Stew. To my surprise, it was deliciously seasoned. Though, I could not quite get past the texture of the Nigerian delicacy. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL TO COOK FOR YOUR GUESTS AT HOME? I make mean meat and vegetable lasagnas. Meat-lovers cannot get enough of my homemade meat sauce, while vegetarians love that I stack the layers with spinach, mushrooms and roasted red peppers. Either way, I pile on the cheese. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE INGREDIENT TO COOK WITH? My favourite ingredient is undoubtedly cheese. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD AS A CHILD? Cheese. See a pattern? Believe it or not, “cheese” was my very first word as a child. I used to plow through half a block a day and would do the same today if I didn’t know better.

Heidi

Age: 40 / Children: 2 (11 and 8) Background: Jewish Heidi recently switched industries and for the first time in her life is seated at a desk job for 40 hours a week. She used to work on her feet and as a result, felt more “fit” and had periods when she would burn calories and have active minutes. With the new job, kids and life in general, she finds it difficult to find time to exercise, do meal prep and eat healthy. She admits to being a bit lazy and is hardly active. However, she also suffers from ‘mom guilt’ for taking time for herself and away from her family. Her goal is to have better overall fitness and body health. At 40, she feels her body going through some changes and fears doing nothing will lead to weight gain. She would like to build some muscle, tone up and lose some weight. Heidi’s husband is a Phys Ed teacher and very active. At 42, he is in better shape than when they first met 18 years ago. He, along with Heidi’s stepmom think there is more Heidi can do to be healthier and fit. Heidi has tried to revamp the family’s overall eating but ends up getting discouraged or burnt out. “Like anyone, I would love a quick fix, but know it’s not realistic, so it’s time to step up and start doing better for myself and, in turn, for my family.”

Michelle

Age: 45 / Children: 5 (21,18,16,11,11) Background: Black/Indo-Trinidadian

Twelve years ago, Michelle was at her best fitness point in life and became pregnant with twins. They were premature and she had to have a C-section. Postpartum and formative care, along with her healing from the surgery impacted her fitness routine and ultimately halted it. Coupled with an unhealthy relationship, it kept her from focusing on her fitness and wellness. Now, a single mother, she wants to improve her health so she ages better and keeps her body functioning. Michelle’s diet and habits don’t match what is typical of a healthy lifestyle. She finds her job and motherhood takes up most of her time, with little left for self-care. Her sister Jennifer and daughter Maykah are both concerned about her and would like to see her get on a healthier path.

Juanita

Age: 37 / Children: None Background: Black/Jamaica-Barbadian Juanita’s mother passed away last December and is one of the main reasons her health has gone off the rails. She is still grieving, she has trouble sleeping and is an emotional snacker. She is a nurse on a very busy unit where breaks are missed and her shifts are 12 hour nights or days. Her goal is to lose approximately 60lbs and to become healthy overall. She has tried different options in the past – Herbalife, weight training, HIIT exercising, but felt like she couldn’t keep up and struggled to complete the routines without feeling extremely winded. Her cousin Mearlyn and close friend Catherine have been encouraging Juanita to make the change and want her to get help with her choices and (lack of) fitness routine.

Abigail

Age: 39 / Children: 3 (4, 2 and 3 months) Background: Chinese With three very young children, Abigail feels like she doesn’t have the time to take care of her health properly. She is struggling with motivation and finding the energy to exercise. Getting childcare and support is also a big hurdle for her. Her fitness goal is to lose the baby weight, get in shape, feel better and fit into her pre-baby clothes. Before the kids, Abigail would walk the dog daily and go to yoga a few times a week. But as she had the children, her self-care fell to the bottom of the priority list. Between being pregnant and breastfeeding, it became easy to make excuses. She also thinks she has postpartum depression and is hoping by changing her diet and exercising it will help to alleviate some of the symptoms. Her husband is concerned about her and would like her to get some professional help.

NO WALLFLOWERS HERE: How to Make a Statement With Your Walls BY SARA BEDERMAN

A

highly customizable but largely overlooked area of the home is probably right in front of you right now - the walls. Each room in your home has at least a couple, but aside from paint colour, why are these expansive, blank canvases largely left empty? Give your walls a shot in the spotlight this year, with three hot wall treatment trends to try right now.

80

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SUMMER 2019 ISSUE

Whether you’re renovating your whole home from top to bottom, or redecorating just one or two of its rooms, remember that regardless of your project’s scale or scope, don’t waste a single inch of space. After all, it’s a limited resource, so make the most of every corner. Thoughtful finishes and a few unexpected choices can turn otherwise overlooked, underused areas of the home into a new-found focus.

H O M E

HEXED! Geometrics have been trending the last five years or so, but they have evolved from the wallpapers of the past, in terms of today’s trending shapes and materials. Hexagon tiles are the latest iteration of geometric wall coverings, a trend that was found its way to flooring and backsplashes as well. This six-sided form is complex yet understated and unexpected, all at once. Shape is a great way to modernize a classic colour palette and material, such as ceramic or marble. One of my favourite is the new “White Wolf” Hex Tile by Erth Coverings. Trend To Watch: Watch for a layering of materials applied within one space. Different mediums and aesthetics, such as rustic hardwood alongside meticulously cut, modern marble tile, will bring variety and help highlight your home’s best features.

V I VA

THREE DIMENSIONAL Three-dimensional wall cladding is relatively new on the interior design scene, but it has begun its ascent into the consumer market for applications in residential and commercial spaces alike. If you’re looking to update and upgrade your space, this is definitely an option to consider. A common misconception is that 3D tile is too “futuristic,” even bordering on Jetsons. Quite the contrary, a product like White Diamond 3D Wall Design by CIOT, pictured in matte white finish, is subtle and elegant. This Italian-made product is available in a range of patterns, and features a raised geometric design on each large-scale, 16-by-32-inch piece. Depending on how light and shadows play on each panel, this wall treatment lends an ever-changing look to your home.

ORGANIC EDGES Imperfectly perfect - this is the aesthetic goal of this particular wall trend, which exploits the natural attributes of organic materials and their uneven patterns, colours and edges. This tile style is elegant enough to take on a formal space (imagine a living room feature wall) but certainly practical enough to survive the wear and tear of a kitchen or bathroom. This wall treatment is commonly seen on kitchen backsplashes, but was worked its way into bathrooms, living areas and entryways with gusto. © Erthcoverings.com

HOROSCOPE ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19)

You’re ready for a change, Aries – and you’re going to get it. When Mercury moves into Leo on the 11th, you’ll start dreaming big. Why can’t you go for that dream job you’ve been lusting after? At the same time, you’ll start thinking about changes you need to make to get your finances in order…and what you’d do if you had more dough.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20)

This month, you’re all about living your best life – from the comfort of your couch – thanks to the Leo new moon happening in the sector of your chart dedicated to home and well-being. So host a BBQ at your place, or splurge a little on some new decor for your home. (It’ll feel so, so good...trust.)

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21)

You’re channeling some serious intuitive vibes this month, Gem, and you don’t want to ignore them. Uranus is in a sector of your chart that has to do with the subconscious and sudden intuition, giving you all kinds of gut feelings. Btw, you might also have some dreams that seem completely out there, but pay attention: They could be trying to tell you something.

it for taking those risks. Then on the 11th, Jupiter goes direct in a sector of your chart about work, making it the perfect opportunity to look for a promotion or even a new gig.

SAGITARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 11) LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22)

Your motto for this month: Just do you. Mars is in your sign for most of August, stirring up an energy that makes you proud of who you are—just in time for blowing out the candles on your b-day cake (HBD, btw!). At the same time, energy from Uranus is in a sector of your chart that represents career: Do you want to spend the rest of your life in your current gig? Or are you ready for a change?

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22)

You need a freaking break already, Virgo, but don’t worry, you’ll get it. The new moon is in a sector of your chart about retreat, making you seriously crave a vacay, or even just a day off.

82

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SUMMER 2019 ISSUE

Dream big, Sag. The month kicks off with the ideal energy for making your wishes come to life. The only question: What do you really want?

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19)

Your gut never steers you wrong, Capricorn, and it’s time to listen up. Jupiter goes direct on the 11th in a part of your chart that represents intuition. When you get inspired, don’t push those urges down—act on them.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18)

The full moon is in your sign this month, Aquarius, making it a great time for you. Woo woo! Do what you want, whenever you want it. It’s your time to shine.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23)

Grab your girls, Libra – the month kicks off with some serious sisterhood energy. Make plans for a friends-only dinner, or take a beach trip together. You guys could use a break, and it’ll be so good for your friendship.

CANER (Jun 22-Jul 22)

You’ve got some serious talent, Cancer, so let it all out there. Now’s the time to show off your art on Instagram or hit up some open-mic nights. While you’re at it, give yourself a mental high five – you deserve

doing? And, more important, do you feel like you’re being acknowledged for the career badass you are? If not, something’s gotta change.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21)

You’ve got work on the brain in the beginning of the month, Scorpio, thanks to the new moon. Do you love what you’re

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20)

So…you’re going to kick off the month feeling a little dramatic, Pisces. Why the heck do you have to work every freaking day? Why couldn’t you have been born a Kardashian instead? Luckily, Jupiter goes direct on the 11th in your house of career, helping you shake off your moping and focus on what you can control. Something big is brewing for you at work – just listen to your gut before you make a move.
