With spring weather slowly making its appearance, it’s a great time of year to work toward that perfect beach body. Of course, a healthy diet and exercise are the first recommendations for achieving weight loss, but what do people do when they’d like to reduce fat or if they have sagging or loose skin from a major weight loss? Or what if they just prefer cosmetic or plastic surgery? That’s where body contouring procedures come into play. The world of body contouring has come a long way from liposuction and tummy tucks. There are now invasive, minimally-invasive, and noninvasive procedures available. Technology within these types of procedures has also evolved, with new patents and discoveries constantly being implemented. Some of the more popular body contouring procedures 6

SMART LIPO VS. TUMMY TUCK While the popularity of liposuction, a cosmetic surgery that removes unwanted fat deposits from underneath the skin, has increased over the years, a specific liposuction technique that is rapidly

gaining popularity is Smart Lipo. As defined by smartlipo.com, Smart Lipo is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technologies to melt fat.

include: Smart Lipo, tummy tucks, CoolSculpting, UltraShape, Venus Freeze Legacy, and Endermologie. While these procedures are similar, they’re not to be confused with one another. Each has unique features, which are important for clients to note when determining the right procedure for them.

Dr. David Berman of Berman Cosmetic Surgery in Sterling, Va. specializes in Smart Lipo. He says this procedure is constantly compared to the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. Both procedures remove fat and tighten the skin, but Smart Lipo focuses more on removing the fat, while the tummy tuck focuses on the latter. Also, the tummy tuck focuses solely on the abdominal area, while, according to Dr. Berman, Smart Lipo can be performed from the neck down to the knee. continued on page 8

Dr. Berman also recommends that those who are more than 20 percent above their ideal body weight should look into getting a tummy tuck, because the ideal Smart Lipo candidate is within 15 to 20 percent of their ideal body weight. Another difference between the two procedures is recovery. A representative of WIFH, an Atlantabased Concierge Medical Practice specializing in Laser Aesthetics, wrote that Smart Lipo results in up to two days of recovery time, little to no bruising, and use of a compression garment for three weeks. However, according to Dr. Timothy Mountcastle of Mountcastle Plastic Surgery in Ashburn, Va., after a tummy tuck, patients can experience some discomfort that can be controlled with medication, swelling and bruising that can last from weeks to months, a recovery time of two to four weeks (they can go back to work at this time, but they should wait four to six weeks before continuing with more strenuous activities), and wearing a compression garment on their abdomen for a “period of time.”

COOLSCULPTING VS. ULTRASHAPE Those who prefer less recovery time might consider noninvasive procedures like CoolSculpting or UltraShape. They’re also ideal for individuals who have been able to reduce visceral fat (fat that forms around the organs) through healthy diet and exercise, but need help getting rid of subcutaneous fat (fat that forms underneath the skin’s surface). Both procedures only take up to an hour and are said to result in little to no pain. Both CoolSculpting and UltraShape are cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They both kill unwanted fat cells, however, CoolSculptuing uses cooling panels to freeze away fat, while UltraShape uses a transducer to create ultrasound pulses that help in the process of eliminating fat. More specifically, according to Astoria Laser Clinic and Med Spa in Vienna, Va., in a CoolSculpting session, a device is positioned on the treatment area, draws the bulge up between two cooling panels, and creates a firm pull and pressure sensation, which cools and kills the fat cells. ULTRASHAPE VS LIPOSUCTION Those who prefer less recovery time might consider non-invasive procedures like CoolSculpting or UltraShape. The UltraShape system has been FDA-cleared for abdominal circumference reduction and shown to be safe and effective for patients. The fat is then processed via the body’s natural mechanisms. You should see results in as few as two weeks. Clinical results show an average reduction of 3.3 cm (1.3 inches) or up to 6.3 cm (nearly 2.5 inches) after three treatments. abdomen and a soothing gel is applied onto the skin, a trained technician glides an UltraShape transducer over the treatment area, creating ultrasound pulses that remove excess fat.

VENUS FREEZE VS. ENDERMOLOGIE The CoolSculpting and UltraShape techniques help prove that technology is important in effective body contouring procedures. However, the technology used in those two procedures is basic compared to that used in Venus Freeze and Endermologie. While one would imagine that Venus Freeze was similar to CoolSculpting, Venus Freeze actually freezes time, not fat. It also concentrates on tightening skin and reducing the appearance of cellulite, as does Endermologie. Both Venus Freeze and Endermologie are also non-invasive, but the main difference is the specific technology used and processes that occur during the procedures. According to m-body.com, Venus Freeze was developed by Venus Concept, a leader in the aesthetic medicine industry, and “is the first all-in-one cosmetic medicine workstation” that combines Multi-Polar Radio Frequency (RF), VariPulseTM Technology (VP), Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEMF), and RealTime Thermal Feedback. In layman’s terms, as explained by Astoria Laser Clinic and Med Spa, RF and PEMF combine to form MP2, which penetrates, heats, and eventually tightens the skin. Endermologie also uses technology to attack cellulite and loose skin. But according to LPG, a self-named world leader in cellular stimulation with the CELLU M6, Endermologie is known for the unique Mecano-Stimulation technique, during which rollers and flaps are used to grasp the skin tissue and target different areas of the face and body and skin tissue problems. Not only do the two procedures differ in approach, but they also differ in the number of treatments required. Tricia Ellis-Christensen of wisegeek.org said Endermologie usually requires 14 to 28 sessions, each about 45 minutes. According to Dr. Coutin of Great Falls Med Spa in Great Falls, Va., Venus Freeze takes about six to eight sessions that can last 30 minutes to an hour. Dr. Coutin also says that the people who come to her for Venus Freeze procedures are between ages 40 to 75, while Ellis-Christensen says patients usually range from 10

ages 30 to 45. Both Dr. Coutin and Ellis-Christensen agree that ideal candidates are those who are fit.

Overcoming personal trials, Ashley Ivey brings her elite mobile spa to the area. BY RICK MUNDY What if you could enjoy the benefits of a full-service spa for your wedding party where the spa comes to you? Everything from makeup, nail and hair care to facials, massages, waxing and more? With in the Nick Of Time Elite Mobile Spa, you and your friends will be pampered in the comfort of your own home. It is the creation of proprietor Ashley Ivey, and came into being, in part, because of her own life story. Growing up, Ashley threw herself into her daily routine: school, church activities, and at fourteen, working in the family business. Then just months from graduating and preparing to attend the University of Miami, Ashley felt her toes start tingling and then go numb. Over the next days, she couldn’t control her movements and would walk into walls. Only 18, Ashley was diagnosed with a severe form of multiple sclerosis. She never returned to school that year. What followed in the next few years was an arduous period of 12

treatments, hospital stays, recoveries, and relapses. Finally Ashley headed back to school, giving her something to look forward to after years of fighting her disease. First at Nova Community College and then on to George Mason, she excelled and was close to finishing. Three months before graduation, however, she fell at school and relapsed again. The school decided that she would not graduate and would have to come back another year to finish. Ashley talks of her personal “motivator button” which kicked in, and she convinced the school to let her try. Drawing on her strong Le Nouveau Moi

faith in God, she graduated cum laude, got her physical therapy license and passed the board exam. Her struggles did not go away. First Ashley worked at Virginia Hospital Center for nine months. Then another relapse. Upon recovery, she established a physical therapy health and wellness center, operating alongside iCare, her mother’s home health care business. Feeling that her troubles had subsided, she started speaking at churches and even made a video describing her challenges and how, with God’s help, she was able to overcome hem. Then in January of 2014, she experienced her worst relapse ever, lasting six long months. She lost her vision and had to shut down the health and wellness center and move back to her parents’ home. Never giving up, Ashley pressed on. She regained her vision and started thinking about what she could do next. Recalling the lift she always experienced when she received a massage or had her hair done at the hospital, she hit on the idea to offer health and beauty services to groups by bringing the spa directly to them. “I wanted to give people a fun experience they could enjoy as a group without the hassle of traveling to the salon.”

As soon as you lower your right arm and left leg back to their starting position, raise your left arm straight overhead and your right knee towards your chest. 4. Repeat this alternating movement. Start out slowly and build up to a faster pace.

SINGLE LEG SPRINTER

1. Begin with front leg bent, keep weight

in the heel. Align the knee over the ankle. Don’t straighten the leg, keep this position throughout the exercise. 2. Straighten back leg in a lunge position, slightly bent. Your arms should be bent and you should move all of your weight to the front heel. 3. Start with raising alternating bent arms up while balancing on your bent leg, and using your abs to lift the opposite knee to your chest. Start out slowly and build up to a faster pace, eventually driving hard with the arms and knee.

SIDE-TO-SIDE PRESS-UP

1. Place your hands on the floor

at chest level, with your arms fully extended, body straight, and toes on the floor. 2. Maintaining the position and keeping your back flat and straight, step out wide with one leg and arm. 3. Lower your body towards the floor until your chest is almost touching the ground before straightening the arms again. 4. your hands are directly under your shoulders with straight arms. 2. Keeping your hips low, jump the feet up and across to the side of the mat. 3. Keep control in the core as you jump from side to side, over the mat. TIP: Drive the jumps high through your feet and control through the core. Land softly while keeping your hands planted and steady.

1. Stand tall and bring up the knee

Bring your left knee up and across your body while bringing your arms down and towards the left while twisting your torso. Using your core, focus and “crunch” the knee up, while driving down towards with your arms. 3. Extend the leg again, tap the floor and continue. acey Chang has a good friend named Becca, a Marine Corps officer who was deployed to rural West Africa during the Ebola crisis in late 2014. Because Becca was in what was considered a “hardship tour” region, she did not have regular access to bath, body, and feminine hygiene products, potable water, or even a shower—they sometimes used buckets to bathe. She could only carry the essentials in her pack. Hearing this, Chang was motivated to help, and talked to her female friends in the D.C./Northern Virginia area. They spend the season cleaning out their cabinets, gathering up trial and travel-size body, bath and beauty products, which the Chang packaged up and mailed to Becca and the four other female soldiers stationed with her.

What was your favorite vacation? When I traveled through Europe with my brother Dory for two months.

What is your favorite activity? I love painting and being creative.

Where do you find happiness?

Giving back, spending time with my boys, 11 and 13, as well with my huge family. St. Jude Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital is a big part of my life and I do a lot of volunteer work to help them raise money and bring awareness. I also cherish time with my friends and love going dancing.

Where did your outfit come from?

My top was Michael Kors from Marshalls (love Marshalls), but also love Chanel. The very affordable beautiful neckless came from Gems & Jewels but I have many pieces form Lenkersdorfer both at Tysons. I also love vintage and second hand stores like Reddz Trading in Georgetown.

What is your beauty secret?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve used baby wipes for the past 13 years to clean my face at night. In the morning I use pure rose water to wake me up that I get from Lebanese Taverna Market, a 10oz is $3. I also love getting Hydra Facials at Grandeur in Mclean, leaving my skin soft and hydrated. 32
