uch to my husband’s dismay—I am all about the tacky holiday tree. When I was little and my mother would debate about which holiday decorations would go on the tree that year, my response would always be, “let’s do ALL of them!” And as I got older, my siblings and I would relish in the fun of decorating the exterior of our parents’ house with a playful, colorful and god-awful display of blinking moving lights whether we lived in the house at the time or not, and whether the neighbors appreciated our enthusiasm or not. So when the holiday season approaches, I love to go all out. I agree. To create your own sacred space and evoke a southwestern vibe, place a tea light in a clay diffuser, fill the little receptacle with water and a few drops of essential oil of sage and breathe in the ambience. Sage, particularly white sage, an evergreen salvia native to the southern California coast, is known for its cleansing properties and is a part of many Native American ceremonies and rituals. The Chumash, who originally inhabited the Ojai Valley, would gather the leaves to

create ‘smudge sticks,’ which are burned to produce a spirit-soothing incense.

THE KUYAM EXPERIENCE

mix equal parts with apple cider vinegar in a little glass, pottery, or wooden bowl. I like to start with a bamboo baby bowl and little bamboo rice paddle from bambu.com $5. Next, fill the tub about an inch deep with warm water. Use a dark terry cloth hairband to keep hair off the forehead. Apply the clay to the face and body, particularly to joints, but really all over is fine. Let the clay dry. You might notice a slight tingly feeling. Use a dark washcloth to gently remove clay from the face and then body. Drain water and rinse tub. Then refill with a nice hot bath. This is when I grab my bath pillow. Sink in for the ultimate calm.

LAVENDER CHILL ZONE & CITRUS SPRITZER

To cool off, a lavender-chilled hand towel applied to the forehead and chest is beyond refreshing. And for a cooling mister, fill a spritzer with water infused with uplifting citrus essences such as grapefruit, tangerine (like the pixies of Ojai), and sweet orange. It can also be quite luxurious to follow up with a light application of warmed jojoba oil with essence of sage. So while it may be true that I don’t have Moroccantiled chamber in my little condo in Falls Church, with just a little imagination, I can transport myself to Ojai whenever I want– and so can you!

Why has needling risen in popularity? The go-to treatment in 2016 has been needling and fall is the perfect season to remove unwanted skin imperfections. How many treatments are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks? (General guide) Rejuvenation: 4-6 Treatments, 4 Weeks Apart Should I prepare my skin before having a Dermapen treatment? For optimal results we recommend a period of effective active treatment creams such as Vitamin A, C or Resveratrol & Procyanidin to allow the skin’s strength to build-up (especially for thin or delicate skin areas). Continue to use these recommended solutions after the treatments for a period of 6 weeks. How long should it take before I see results? Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will occur after 4 to 6 treatments (spaced 4-6 weeks apart). Your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments and when combined with the recommended post treatment care. Is the treatment painful? For minimum needle depths Dermapen treatments are painless. hat are the differences between organic, green, natural and biodegradable cosmetic/ skincare products? A relevant topic, given that so many people want products under those headings. Consumer preference for green products is a growing market sector. Not just natural, but biodegradable organics. I wasn’t certain the differentiation between those words or if they were all interchangeable. It turns out there is a great difference between natural and organic terms which, due to unlicensed actions and general public unawareness, are often used interchangeably. They are not interchangeable!

There is a plethora of information to weed through. Lots of conflicting, confusing claims about products. Let’s clear up something right now. Evidently, ‘natural’ products are not necessarily green. Nor organic with a field wide open for interpretation. The need to discern the difference between natural, organic and green surges on. Something natural may not be green, organic nor biodegrade. Is it a challenge to go green? Let’s look at what’s what here: Natural is essentially something derived from a source in nature, simply stated. It can be a Le Nouveau Moi

direct plant extract, something plant derived or from the earth/ocean. But is it good for you? Key words ‘derived and nature’. Natural doesn’t mean it’s in its raw form. Everything natural is NOT organic, nor necessarily biodegradable. Green means products are from sources that ARE natural, organic and shown to biodegrade: a footprint holding no damage. Skin is the largest organ of the body. This is a lot of ground to cover in terms of absorption into our systems. The products we innocently slather on could be contributing to either an enhancement of well being or our detriment. Ali Witwit, cosmetic scientist / formulator, spoke to me about products he’d recently been asked to create. He expressed that some cruise ship lines are now very focused on having passengers use clean biodegradable products to protect the ocean when they are purged out at sea. (You can find an extraordinary amount of info and research about the effect on cosmetic/product use affecting the ocean environment online.) Mr. Witwit, Vice President of Technology for Ross Organics (the company provides manufacturers with organic cosmetic components) said,“The trends are basically going totally green, not just greenwashed. Natural does not always equal green, healthy and sustainable. Customers are now looking for sustainable, low carbon footprint, biodegradable with the lowest possible impact on the environment. They are also looking for social and environmental responsibility and impact on global sourcing, remote forests and on indigenous people. Traceability and fair trade are also big deciding factors.” There are a plethora of companies that engage in what is called greenwashing...washing over some of the details of product composition. This leads the consumer to believe the product is green, organic, etc. when in actuality it isn’t. Greenwashed products infer they are green, natural, and perhaps organic or contain a percentage of organic ingredients but aren’t 100% organic. And haven’t the science to back up the claims. Stating a product is eco-friendly because of what it doesn’t contain, may be very misleading. It may contain numerous ingredients that are not ecofriendly at all. Some of these greenwashed 2016

products, for example, still have phtylates. These, simply put, are chemical agents that create flexibility in plastic and are also used widely in cosmetics! An example of what happens with phtylates will clarify what we are examining here—these substances don’t break down. When the plastics they are mixed with (re: recyclable packaging) OR the compositions, i.e. cosmetic lotions, begin to disintegrate, the phtylates aren’t attached (mixed in) to anything anymore and are thus essentially free-floating agents, that enter our bloodstream and can wreak havoc. Hormone imbalance is considered a side effect, for one. The list of ingredients like this are rife in our cosmetics. I’m not saying to rid yourself of favorite products! Just be savvy. Many countries other than the US have already banned using some of these problematic agents in cosmetic products. To further clarify, organic ingredients are biodegradable. Look for products that are certified 100% organic. This certification is for plants that are proven to be 100% pesticide and chemical free. Many products show a percentage organic, for example. If all the ingredients are not, they won’t carry certification.What is the remainder? More than likely fillers, chemicals or nonbiodegradable ingredients. The US government has not currently created reliable stringent regulations to weed out the fray. As consumers we need to discern, discover, research. Being an aware consumer is paramount these days. More people want a cosmeceutical approach that is organic and holistic. Some international cosmetic companies are aware of this trend, and are creating products of this ilk. There is much to consider about how products are packaged. Is there something in these materials that are problematic? Cristina Bartolucci of Peek Cosmetics, and industry icon (founded DuWop ; formulates products for well known international brands) says “Biodegradable packaging material is often mistakenly added to recyclable material, rendering it unrecyclable. As advancements are made in natural preservative systems and technical

What skincare product do you use that you are most happy with? I started using Caudalie products almost two years ago and it made a big improvement in the texture and tone of my skin. I use the C serum, the Vinoperfect with SPF 20 for daytime, and then a heavier moisturizer and eye cream for night.

What did you formerly do (beauty-wise) that you realized wasn’t worth the money? I have naturally curly hair that I was relaxing with a really harsh relaxer for about 15 years. It would break my hair off and leave it really damaged. I have learned to embrace my curls more and will only occasionally use a Keratin treatment if I am going on vacation some place with really high humidity.

What is your biggest beauty splurge that you deem necessary? Microdermabrasion facials every 8 weeks and IPL laser treatment once a year to remove freckles and sun damage from my face. Oh and a really powerful hairdryer to blow out my curls!

Where do you find happiness? I find happiness in many things in life but they all stem from being with my husband and children. We spend our weekends doing fun things like boating in Annapolis or attending local events with friends, and we love to travel together. We are always planning our next adventure! But truly whether we are doing a home improvement project or simply going to church and lunch on Sundays, I am happiest when I am with my family.

What is your beauty secret? I have been militant about using sunblock on my face and neck since I was about 24 years old. I must have a million hats to wear when I’m in the sun. The other key thing I do is I never go to bed without cleansing and moisturizing my face. It doesn’t matter how late or how tired I am, and it really keeps my skin clear and bright. 28
