was in college when my boyfriend (now husband) whisked me away for our first getaway over Spring Break. To my recollection, there was no candlelit dinner or night of dancing—instead he took me to meet his grandparents in Pittsburgh. Perhaps it seemed a bit odd, but there was something quite romantic in meeting Mr. and Mrs. Rossetti, who had been together for over 60 years at the time, a true testament to real-life true love. Vienna Fitness Studio Offers Classes For Everyone By Keith Loria
M
ona Harb knows it isn’t easy to work an exercise regimen into our busy schedules, and she’s confident her Flex N Tone studio can help guide people to the path of fitness and health.
“People have children, and they have to get their kids to school, then they have to come back and get themselves ready to go to work,” she says. “While they are at work, there’s no way they can exercise. It’s not an easy life anymore.”
Harb is a hairstylist and curlyologist who owns the Lofty Boutique Salon Spa (354 Maple Ave., Vienna.) Three years ago, she opened Flex N Tone (370 Maple Avenue West in Vienna), right near her salon.
Our busy lifestyles have taken away other opportunities to live in a healthy way. For example, Harb notes that previous generations walked more often, which is exercise, and also cooked their own food, which is healthier than eating packaged food.
“What made me decide to open the studio is the number of people I have met throughout my career that have failed in sticking with a diet or exercising program,” Harb says. “I was thinking that maybe if I have a different approach to exercise, people wouldn’t be defeated because very few people enjoy exercising, in my opinion.” That was true for herself, as well, as she didn’t like to exercise until she discovered yoga a number of years ago. She understands that each person needs to find the right class to in order to get passionate about fitness. “The way we are approaching this industry is by giving lots of variety in workouts,” Harb says of Flex N Tone. “In one studio, you can find 10 different types of workouts, there has to be one for you.” Everything from Candlelight Yoga to Zumba to Pilates Sculp are offered. Another key to Flex N Tone are the instructors, who Harb notes are friendly and personable. “Their goal is to help you enjoy that hour and meet your goal,” she says. “Anybody can teach exercise, but very few people have the energy and the passion to help people who have a hard time exercising.” When it comes to the challenges that prevent people from exercising, Harb says the biggest factor is time. 2017

Harb wants people to start living healthier lives, and offers tips to anyone seeking to improve their health. First, she says to make sure that the gym you go to is close to home, within two or three miles. “Pick a place that is local, that is close to you,” she says. “This makes it harder to make an excuse not to go.” Second, she says when you visit a gym or studio to see if it’s a good fit, picture yourself going there and determine if it’s right for you. In particular, it’s important to pay attention to the instructors. “It’s the instructor who brings you back to the studio,” Harb says. Finally, she’s encouraging in saying that if you need to change your diet, it might not be as difficult as you expect. “If you cut down sugar, it might be hard for a month, but after a month, it’s not hard at all,” Harb says. “It’s the same thing with gluten. You might think, ‘I cannot not eat bread,’ but you’ll be surprised if you challenge yourself. You’ll find your body adapts.” For more information on her studio, visit www. flexntone.com.
