A Letter From The Publisher We couldn’t resist it. Six issues was simply not enough. As we sat around wondering what more we could do for the community and the merchants who serve us, we thought of a “Special Holiday Issue” to shed more light on our merchants and service providers around town.

I simply couldn’t talk Keryn and Carly out of the idea, (I tried) and so here it is. A shopping guide, holiday recipes, some stories and special events to keep you upbeat and connected with the town during the holidays.

carly@vivatysons.com
A very special thanks to Keryn who poured her heart into the project-those who work with her year round know her commitment to the community and our clients. And Carly, with a keen eye for design and especially around the holidays, you’re the best! Thanks ladies. Jan gives us a laugh with her story on shopping at the mall, Keith shares some thoughts on giving and Toys for Tots, Carly shares the history of The Nutcracker Ballet and Colleen explores the magic of the holidays around Great Falls. Entertaining this season? The Sausage and Mushroom stuffing from Patrick and Julie Bazin is to die for, and that’s just one of the many given to us by our celebrated chefs. Carly and Keryn ran around town to find some special items to help you with your shopping list-all from our area’s special merchants-have a peek. John McMahon has located Santa. International treats, pet gifts, flowers from Karin’s, holiday fashion ideas, holiday cheers from Talbot County, and so much more. Enjoy the magic of the season! Please remember the small and independent local merchants (this is an important time for them), our seniors, and those in need this holiday season. A prayer and thanks for our men and women serving in the military, and remember a smile in Tysons traffic goes a long way and says “Happy Holidays.” Cheers!

Nutcracker
The
A little window into the “life” of The Nutcracker Ballet
T
he Sugar Plum Fairy, the Nutcracker Prince, angels, snowflakes, dewdrops, mice, and even an owl, if only for a moment, all come together to create the stunning ballet we all know as The Nutcracker. Many gather in theatres every holiday season across the nation to enjoy different variations of this beloved production, however, the original introduction of this preformance was not quite as successful. The original production in December of 1892, created by composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographers Marius Petipa and later Lev Ivanov, met great criticism and mixed reviews. Many found it confusing and a bit chaotic, others were not happy with the use of so many children in a ballet. One critic was upset claiming it wasn’t faithful to E.T.A. Hoffman’s original tale. * But, despite the criticism about the story, critics did love Tchaikovsky’s score finding it rich, inspirational and creative. Although the criticism was tough at the beginning, The Nutcracker has continued to be preformed all over the world following the original display. The ballet’s popularity blossomed when it came to the United States back in 1944, where it first appeared on the stage of the San Francisco Opera Ballet, then with a few character changes, George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet popularized it and established it as a holiday tradition.
Nearly 700 lighting instruments are used to illuminate the stage for the production. The giant Christmas tree grows to almost 40 feet or sometimes more. Over 70 musicians play in the orchestra during the performance. Many times 100 dancers or more perform in each production. The Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu can contain nearly 15 layers of tulle. Nearly 200 pounds of paper confetti fall onto the stage to create the snowstorm. The special instrument played for the Sugarplum Fairy’s solo is a celesta. T he Nutcracker ballet premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia on December 18th, 1892. The Nutcracker is based on the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E. T. A. Hoffman.
Here are some fun facts about the production of The Nutcracker, and a couple extras. Many productions differ, but these are some averages for the larger professional performances.
The first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934, staged by Nicholas Sergeyev after Petipa’s original choreography.
Hundreds of thousands of people attend The Nutcracker performances each year nationally.
Despite its popularity, The Nutcracker score was not one of Tchaikovsky’s favorites. He was given very strict guidelines to follow in composing it which took the creativity out of it for him.
Anywhere from 30 to 50 people work backstage to coordinate the scenery, lighting, and costumes for each performance. Upwards of 150 costumes appear onstage during each performance, many handmade.

Flowers WORTH REMEMBERING
Holiday suggestions and tips for bringing flowers into your holidays
T
he door opens to Karin’s Florist (www.karinsflorist. com) in Vienna and the distinctively treasured smell of the holiday rushes through the air. The unique and vibrant stems that fill these walls are a testimony to the grandeur and warmth that flowers add to the season. It is no wonder that Karin’s motto is, “Flowers Worth Remembering.” Karin’s Florist offers a few suggestions for the holidays:
Holiday Party Ideas and Tips: •W hen choosing an arrangement for your home, have the arrangement go with your style. Arrangements should complement the space and décor. If your home is more of a traditional style, stick with a classic color palette of red and
14
green or warm spice colors of cinnamon and cloves. If your home is more of the contemporary, modern feel, go with trendy, clean looking arrangements, and venture into different color palettes, such as jewel tones or turquoise and hot pink. • Fresh wreaths and garlands look great on the front door, along the mantle, and down the stairs. Other, not so obvious places to decorate, could be above an armoire or china cabinet, in the powder room, on the garden gate, or above the garage door. • A cylinder vase filled with fresh evergreens and holiday ornaments is a quick and festive idea that would look great on the coffee table or a sideboard.
VivaTysons | HOLIDAY 2012 vivatysons.com
• Decorate your home with a base of garlands, wreaths and other more permanent décor. For parties, add some fresh flower arrangements to create different atmospheres for different groups of friends. For example, in a business atmosphere, decorate with more subdued arrangements. For your more adventuresome friends, decorate with more dramatic arrangements. The vases can have a base of holiday evergreens, which can have different flowers added to it to change the look and feeling of the arrangement.
Care Tips: • Be sure your plants are well watered, but not over watered. Check the soil about once per week for dryness. If the soil is still damp, wait a few more days to water it. • Flower arrangements are appropriate for virtually any area in your home, the dining room table, coffee table in the family room, or front hallway to name a few. Remember to not display the arrangements in the line of direct heat, from either a vent or the sun. • Keep the water fresh in your fresh flower arrangements. Change the water if it appears cloudy. Use a good quality floral food to promote the longevity of your arrangements. Also remember the fresh cut evergreens in arrangements will benefit from fresh water as well.
Host Gift Ideas: There are many options when it comes to giving the host of a holiday party an appreciation gift! • When giving flowers, an arrangement in a vase that complements the hostesses' tastes work best. • A classic thank you for a party host would be a bottle of bubbly, or some wine, and Karin’s has many options for you to choose from! • Gift baskets that include gourmet snacks or chocolates are another option as a gift for a host. Easy to eat and easy to share selections would be a big hit. • The holidays only come once a year, so why not bring your host a little something for the season, like an ornament or holiday trinket! • Pick a novelty container that would have another purpose, so the memory will last after the flower arrangement is gone! Such containers could include a dish or decorative container that could be reused to showcase beautiful hard candies or ornaments. • For guests that are coming from out of town, it would be a great idea to have a fresh flower arrangement or gourmet basket waiting for them in their hotel or guest room.

TOYS
FOR TOTS by Keith Loria
I
t was back in 1947 when a charitable thought from the wife of a marine led to what would become the largest toy-giving endeavor in our nation.
Diane Hendricks, wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USCR, had crafted a homemade doll and asked her husband to deliver the toy to a place that would give it to a needy child at Christmas. After much investigation, Hendricks realized that no such organization existed and decided to start one. That first year, Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. Since beginning the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program in 1947, Marines have distributed more than 452 million toys to more than 209 million needy children. For the first three decades, Marines would collect and distribute both new and used toys, working on drill weekends in the fall to refurbish old toys, however, from the Christmas of 1980 through the present, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps, and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. This charitable endeavor has made the U.S. Marines the unchallenged leader in looking after less fortunate children during Christmas. Over its life span, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than 98 million toys valued at more than $694 million; plus provided promotion and support materials valued at over $8.5 million. “The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable natural resources—our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the
18
annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future,” says a spokesperson for the group. According to the organization’s mission statement, the goal of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens, and community leaders. The Foundation staff is headquartered in the Cooper Center located just outside the main gate of Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, about 35 miles south of Washington, DC. Local campaigns are conducted annually in over 700 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. One individual, either a Marine, member of a Marine Corps League Detachment, or member of a local community organization, is designated the Toys for Tots coordinator for that community, who is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting the campaign in his/her community. In Northern Virginia, that honor falls to Staff Sgt. Oscar Villegas, a light-armored vehicle master gunner, who is in charge of teaching the reservists of Delta Co., 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, how to fire the vehicles’ weapons systems. Last year, Marines from the Northern Virginia area organized by Villegas and the rest of 4th LAR Bn.’s Inspector and Instructor unit, gathered 139,000 toys from more than 500 locations and delivered them to 76,000 children across 12 counties.

free entry into the movie. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the movie begins at 10 a.m.
American Lube & Repair 6436 Arlington Boulevard, Falls Church
The principal Toys for Tots activities which take place each year are the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located and in communities without a Reserve Unit that has a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign.

Local Toys for Tots campaign coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races, and other purely voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toy and monetary donations. In 2011, Toys for Tots donations across the country were down as people were feeling the economic crunch, but it’s important to remember that many children will get little or no presents this holiday season. Sure, you may not be able to get that iPhone 5 you want, but be grateful for what you have and think about those less fortunate. A donation of a toy or two or three will go so much further than an added on gift to a pile of presents under your own Christmas tree. author: Keith Loria is a freelance writer who writes regularly about sports, business, entertainment and the arts. A soldier's story
by Colleen Sheehy Orme
T
he crisp winter filled air illuminates the bright lights of the Nation’s Capital. A city that is home to freedom. There are locals and tourists as far as the eye can see. The cold air eliciting a breath filled smoke that leaves their lips commanding attention. The attention that all those who dwell in this metropolitan area know well. Those that recognize the service and sacrifice paid by a select few who honor this country with their courage. They are the ones who bring the respectful tourists here with awe. It is their display of bravery and beauty that this great country has been built upon. In that moment, there is the reminder of all those who have walked this trail called, “Washington.” Of all those, who have a larger sense of the world and are therefore, drawn to this special city to live a greater purpose. It is an intrinsic calling and so true to those who hear it that they command no greater attention than to simply answer it. They do not walk amongst us on these streets begging attention. They leave quietly in the middle of the night. Their hope and reward only that we are allowed to walk this awe inspiring, gorgeous journey through life, possibly at their own expense. It is in this holiday season we are reminded that while many give now, they give continually. The only gift they wish in return is the joy of the gift they are giving to us. Dan Sheehan is one of them. The heroes that slip away quietly. That come back periodically to peek and make

sure the majesty of this great city, this great country is still intact due to his selfless sacrifice. Sheehan is the brave Cobra gunship pilot who has chronicled his story in his newly released book, After Action. A third-generation military flyer, Sheehan went proudly into battle. The dust storms settled after several tours and Sheehan felt the penetrating wounds of courage. Like most wounds the band aid makes the scar invisible, but nonetheless it's there. Bravery has long been considered the ability to walk towards what many fear most. It is a physical reaction to move towards danger that is counter-intuitive to our instincts to self-protect. Dan Sheehan has added a new layer to bravery. He is demonstrating the ability to walk towards danger once again. Only this time it is not the physical danger of protecting all of us, it is the emotional danger. A counter-intuitive reaction to our instincts to self-protect, because to many, emotional danger is far scarier than physical danger. It is no matter to Dan because he is a warrior. A man who came back from battle seemingly absent of scars and untouched, so that he could ‘touch’ us. A book that should be considered ‘required’ reading in this, our Nation’s Capital, if not the entire United States. After Action: The True Story of a Cobra Pilot's Journey is available for purchase at Amazon.com ($18.95). author: Colleen Sheehy Orme, is a freelance journalist and marketing consultant in Great Falls. ormec686@aol.com.

‘Tis FOR GIVING THE SEASON
P
eople love the holidays; visiting with family, enjoying lavish meals and exchanging gifts are looked forward to all year long.
But not everyone is lucky enough to have a hot meal, a family member to see, or even a warm place to sleep. That’s why the holiday season often pulls a little harder on the heartstrings of people’s charitable nature. There are thousands upon thousands of charities available, and no shortage of different organizations close to home that are looking for help. Even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, it still faces a poverty rate of about five percent. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30 percent are children.

OF REMEMBERANCE Antietam Battlefield Illuminates 150 Years by Linda Barrett
A
s darkness befalls Antietam National Battlefield on December 1st, a glow will rise from tens of thousands of candles visible as far as the eye can see. 23,110 candles in all, each representing the life of brave soldier wounded or killed in the Battle of Antietam, the single bloodiest day in American history. There is a certain reverence felt at any hallowed ground, but nothing prepares visitors for the emotional impact delivered at the Antietam National Battlefield Memorial Illumination. Especially this year, at its 150th anniversary. “This is likely the most moving and emotional thing I’ve seen in my many years with the Park Service,” explains John Howard, superintendent, National Park Service, Antietam National Battlefield. “To see the battlefield covered with these tiny little lights for miles and miles and miles is probably the one concrete way you can evaluate what sacrifice is all about.”
"
“You can see photographs or videos, but they don’t do it justice,” he continues. “We can remember our ancestors, then bring it to modern day to contemplate the sacrifice given over the years, even with our soldiers today.”
The first Illumination was held in 1988 when founder and general chairperson Georgene Charles coordinated elementary schoolchildren to release 23,110 balloons at the battlefield. The next year, luminarias were substituted and the lighting has become a tradition the first Saturday in December. “I never realized this would be an annual event, nor did I realize the magnitude of the experience. But every year people wanted more. The interest has not diminished, in fact, it grows every year,” Charles says. Cars line up for miles awaiting the 6 p.m. access to the free Battlefield driving tour. On average about 8,500 vehicles crawl the 5.8-mile, 20-minute-long tour, to view the lights and pass by vignettes staged by Civil War reenactors, both Northern and Southern camps representing actual encampments of 1862.
23,110 candles in all, each representing the life of a brave soldier...
The Battle of Antietam In 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee had just completed his stunning victory at Second Manassas and planned to march north to threaten Washington. To ensure that communication and supply lines remained open, Lee divided his troops, sending some to Harpers Ferry and Martinsburg, West Virginia. Others continued north toward Hagerstown, Maryland. Concurrently, Union General George McClellan pursued, aided by the discovery of Lee’s orders on September 13th. McClellan moved quickly to catch Lee before he could reunite his army. On the morning of September 17, 1862, the two armies collided among the ridges above Sharpsburg and along Antietam Creek. Intense fighting took place in the cornfields, woods, creeks, roads, and around a country church—Bloody Lane, Sunken Road, the Cornfield, West Woods, Burnside Bridge, names now familiar. Federal losses were 12,410, Confederate casualties numbered 10,700. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first Northern invasion, and led ultimately to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

The Illumination
"
The route begins at the main entrance at Richardson Avenue, off Maryland Route 34, and visitors can expect to wait up to two hours for entrance. Drivers are encouraged to use their parking lights only, or to cover their headlights. Over 20,000 visitors are recorded each year. The Volunteer Army
It takes a virtual army of up to 1,400 volunteers from around the country to pull off this yearly event. Volunteers blanket the battlefield, systematically placing the 23,110 candles in sand-filled brown paper bags over a six-mile portion of the battlefield. Luminarias are precisely placed in exact rows spaced 15 feet apart, using GPS mapping, compasses, transits, and even rope to ensure position. “Every group has developed its own way of achieving accuracy in the field,” Charles says. Volunteers begin laying candles on site in 35 quadrants at about 8 a.m., and by 1 p.m. they are finished. Lighting begins at 2 p.m. “With 1,400 volunteers, we can light the entire battlefield in about 45 minutes.” Local Girl and Boy Scouts, the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and others take pride in preparing North America’s largest memorial illumination. “We’re not here just to light candles,” Charles adds. “We want to help the public interpret in a visual way what happened. We hope each person takes a little piece and adapts it to their own use.”

Gift Guide A
fter my retirement from the food industry, my focus on the predicament of the independent businesses in my own town intensified. Today, as I look at the season ahead of us, I am reminded of the many ways shopping at our local independent merchants is the gift that can keep on giving.
Just consider the simple everyday facts: For every one hundred dollars spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue (www.the350project.net). Independent businesses raise the standard of living in our communities because they take their profits and buy products and services from our other local businesses. Or, simply put, money spent here usually stays here. Imagine if we could transition just 10% of our expenditures right here where we live. That dollar amount coming back into our community would be staggering. And how it comes back is the real gift to our kids and us. Consider the increase in jobs and wages, the stronger tax base we can build for our schools and municipalities, and the enriched lives of the merchants and organizations they support. Local business owners invest in the community they serve. Your patronage is everything, and we all know the service levels we enjoy when our satisfaction and their reputation is on the line every day. Is shopping locally considered green? Absolutely! Shopping with local merchants saves everyone time and money, and it reduces our gas consumption and pollution. Local stores and merchants can also help create and sustain vibrant “walkable” communities, and reduce sprawl, which minimizes the need for so many automobiles. How about variety? How many national chains cater to the dietary needs of our Kosher and Muslim consumers? Forty percent of our county is foreign born, which creates retail opportunities. These “one-of-a-kind” operations provide us with distinctive and international character. As the pro at the club once told me, the more people that shop here, the more products and services we will be able to offer. The increasingly homogenized look of many areas around the country has people yearning for the kind of town we live in today. So, vote with your wallet this holiday season, and support a local merchant. What appears to be a slightly higher cost may actually be a bargain the best deal in town. ~ Johnny Hanna

Plan
A Holiday
by Bridgett Feehan
T
he holiday season is stumbling upon us and schedules are quickly filling up with cranberry-inspired dinners, awkward office parties, and tacky sweater themed get-togethers.
The season is an excuse to gather with family and friends to celebrate each other’s accomplishments and launch the New Year. There is a wondrous sense of cheer and togetherness, but it shouldn’t leave one feeling overwhelmed. JBC Events is dashing into the holiday season, equipped with the expertise to produce memorable events. Owner, Jad Bouchebel, knows there is a high demand for holiday engagements. He’s prepared to tackle the most wonderful, yet busiest, time of the year by crossing at least one item off your list. JBC Events provides a variety of event planning services for occasions ranging from intimate dinner parties to large corporate galas. The company handles all details including location, entertainment, catering, lighting, management, and décor. “I established JBC Events because I’m passionate about bringing people together and giving back,” says Bouchebel. “I’ve found my niche by taking what people envision, transforming it into a memorable event, and then dedicating a portion of our revenue to a charity of their choice.” Giving back to the community through donating to charities sets JBC Events apart from other event planning companies. Bouchebel has a variety of charities that clients can choose from. The contribution is taken directly from the company’s profit, with no additional cost to clients. Bouchebel inherited his entrepreneurial skills from his parents, who have owned their family restaurant in Northern Virginia for 13 years.
His experience and background with his family’s business has provided him with the foundation on which he has built JBC Events. Bouchebel has always enjoyed entertaining and surrounding himself with a great crowd, but he didn’t turn his passion into a profession until someone pointed out that he should. He says that the event planning business just came naturally to him because he genuinely loves hosting and cares about each guest’s experience. Bouchebel has been creating special events for over seven years. He began by planning parties from scratch, which not only included coordinating the logistics and details, but also promoting the events and developing the guest lists himself. Bouchebel was entrusted with making sure guests attended the parties. This responsibility increased the pressure to create events that people wanted to attend. The experience resulted in Bouchebel perfecting his planning process by producing events that were not only entertaining, but attractive and enticing to the attendees. It also gave Bouchebel the opportunity to build relationships within the hospitality industry. This would later benefit his JBC Events clients by offering them the best values and options. “From the concept, to the coordination, to seamlessly handling each detail, nothing was overlooked or delivered without JBC Events’ personal touch and on-site participation,” says Bill Glen, a client who planned his wife’s surprise birthday with JBC Events. Bouchebel says he looks forward to taking something off his customer’s plate this holiday season. He enjoys allowing them to savor their special event, while he worries about the details. In JBC’s own words, “We PLAN to make a difference.” All you have to do is choose the charity. JBC Events: 571-243-7199, jad@jbcevents.com Facebook Page: JBC Events

CHRISTMAS AT TYSONS:
FAST AND FURIOUS by Jan King
U
h-oh. It’s that time of year again. Yep, the holidays— so, brace yourself! And, I mean that literally. Once you get on the Kamikazi Beltway or Route 123 heading for Tysons, count on your car being rear ended so often, you’ll need a brace for the multiple whiplashes you’ll be getting. Not to mention the crazed tailgaters and obsessive-compulsive lane changers who will work on your last nerve until you suffer a complete motorific meltdown. This scenario will require a different kind of brace—Holiday Egg Nog laced with brandy and Xanax. When you’re hopelessly mired in holiday traffic, take a few nips of this therapeutic holiday cheer from the flask handily concealed in your designer boots. Aaah--that’ll set you free.
But, not so fast. Before you pass through those hallowed doors, put on a haz-mat suit. As you walk by the fragrance counter, you’ll be assaulted by a dozen desperate saleswomen working on commission and armed with the latest scents by world-renowned perfumers like Britney Spears and Snooki from the Jersey Shore.
"
After barely escaping death by toxic fumes, you’re ready for lunch.
Feel better? Good. Once you’ve arrived at the mall, you’re faced with your second challenge—finding a parking space. Be on the alert to spot any shoppers loaded down with packages heading for their cars. Then, you should follow them at .03 mph to their remote parking space at the end of the garage and patiently sit there, ready to grab that coveted spot. Head’s up. One of two things will happen: 1. T he shoppers load up the trunk and back seat with their packages, lock the car doors, and head back to the mall.
2. A stealth Mini Cooper will appear out of nowhere and steal the space before you even get a chance to flip them the bird. After approximately one hour and forty five minutes of circling the parking garage, you’ll be forced to park in a satellite lot a mile away, where you’ll board a shuttle heading back to the mall. Finally, you’re within sight of Macy’s, Bloomie’s, and Nordie’s!

"
After barely escaping death by toxic fumes, you’re ready for lunch. And while we’re on the subject of toxic fumes, just follow the aroma of the “gourmet” foods wafting from the Food Court. Take caution, however. You’re going to have to navigate through no less than three hundred kids whose bodies have a higher sugar content than the country of Cuba. These kids are literally bouncing off the walls, climbing over their parents, and sneezing into your Chinese chicken salad. Pass the Pepto and penicillin, please.
This being said, I think we need to re-think this whole holiday shopping experience. We need to find a much less frenetic venue to shop. A place where there are no angry mobs, unruly kids, or Mall Santas who not only look but smell like Old Grand Dad. Guess what? I’ve got the perfect solution for you. Stay at home, put on your cozy P.J’s, and do all your shopping on the Net. Thanks, Al Gore. And while you’re there, download my hilarious new novel, Chinese Laundry: It All Comes Out in the Wash. Cheer IN TALBOT COUNTY HOLIDAY by Linda Barrett
L
ike a string of holiday lights, the little towns of Talbot County along the Eastern Shore of Maryland sparkle with holiday cheer. In typical old-fashioned holiday fashion, they are historic, friendly, charming, sophisticated, beautiful, and thoroughly family-friendly. Experience the perfect combination of rural simplicity and urban refinement in Easton, Oxford, St. Michaels, Tilghman Island, Trappe, Unionville, and Wye Mills and enjoy their unique ways of celebrating the season.
gingerbread houses, an annual gala at the Harbourtown Golf Resort, visits with Santa, a holiday parade, and an oldfashioned holiday dinner at the United Methodist Church with gospel music and Christmas spirituals. Listen to the Westminster Ringers, one of the largest bells and chime ensembles in the Mid-Atlantic at Christ Church Easton, and catch Clay Aiken’s “The Joyful Noise Tour” at the Avalon Theater, and Maggie Sansone’s Celtic Celebration at the Stolz Listening Room. She is one of America’s premier hammered dulcimer virtuosos.
Holiday Happenings In early December, catch a performance by Maureen Curtin at the Avalon Theater, or the Easton Signature Chorus for their yearly production of Handel’s Messiah. And don’t miss the Tree Lighting and Old Tyme Holiday Parade featuring Dickens characters as it winds down the streets of Easton. If you’re not too worn out by this excitement, shop around the clock at December 1st’s Midnight Madness in St. Michaels. On December 2nd, visit four holiday-adorned homes on the Trappe Christmas Tour. Mid-December also brings holiday cheer to the Eastern Shore. Enjoy Christmas in St. Michaels (December 7-9), a great event with

The entire family will enjoy The Dinner Theater’s theatrical production of The Santa Diaries held various days between December 16-22, the Holiday Jazz Concert with Chuck and Robert Redd (December 22), and downtown Easton’s First Night Talbot, the annual New Year’s Eve celebration filled with family and children’s activities, live music, entertainers, and the famous “Crab Drop” scheduled at 9:00 p.m. for the younger ones, and midnight for those who can stay up.

Small Town Charm No matter which town you visit, each is worthy of a kiss beneath the mistletoe. Sophisticated and lively Easton is the area’s “big city,” with its boutiques, home décor shops, art galleries, and antique stores. Tilghman Island, at the southernmost tip of Talbot County is a three-mile-long uncrowded stretch nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Choptank River. St. Michaels is one of America’s most enchanting towns, and especially so during the holidays. Enjoy the maze of alley-like residential streets and clapboard shipbuilder’s cottages alongside Victorian homes, and enjoy shopping along Talbot Street. And don’t miss picture-postcard-perfect Oxford, where grand historic homes with picket fences pair with yachts and sailboats. This is where James Michener outlined his epic book Chesapeake at the Robert Morris Inn. Shopping Mosey through the picturesque towns that deck their halls with twinkle lights and holiday decorations, and browse through the unique and one-of-a-kind shops. The charming historic downtown areas are compact and brilliantly filled with an assortment of fine art galleries, antiques, museums, theaters, and boutiques. Who knows, you might just find an unexpected treasure. Dining Romantic restaurants and small inns delight visitors with a warm welcome and fabulous fare. Snuggle up near a crackling fire at one of the many fine dining establishments and inns and enjoy a glass of local wine from St. Michael’s Winery or Little Ashby Vineyards (found along the Chesapeake Wine Trail) or a holiday brew from Eastern Shore Brewing Company. If you have the time, you can tour these facilities. No fewer than 12 restaurants appear in the Zagat guide to the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore restaurants, including the Bartlett Pear Inn (Easton) that received the second highest rating in all categories in 2011 for restaurants in the guide, and Scossa Restaurant and Lounge (Easton), that took honors for “Top Food” and “Top Décor” for the Eastern Shore. Bartlett Pear’s chef, Jordan Lloyd, has been accumulating awards for his upscale American bistro with his food’s foundation based on classic French technique, and using products from local farms whenever possible. Stay overnight in the charming property he and his wife Alice—his fourth grade sweetheart—own, and walk downstairs to dinner. Inquire about their themed once-a-month wine dinner, like the recent wild game feast. Lodging Bring the entire family and start a new tradition with stays at one of the area’s great accommodations. The Inn at Perry Cabin (St. Michaels) is a luxury manor resort situated on a breathtaking 25-acre site overlooking the Miles River near St. Michaels. Visitors might recognize this Inn, selected

as one of the "World’s Best Places to Stay" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, from the films Failure to Launch and Wedding Crashers. For a more intimate stay, choose The Tilghman Island Inn (Tilghman), a romantic 20room inn set along the Chesapeake Bay, or the Robert Morris Inn (Oxford), a pre-1710 structure that will take you back in time to old-fashioned holiday celebrations. For sheer elegance, choose one of the beautifully appointed themed rooms (some larger than apartments) at the fourdiamond Inn at 202 Dover (Easton), an 1874 historic mansion run by husband and wife team Shelby and Ron Mitchell. Let the pampering begin with a complimentary glass of sherry, special turndown treats, steam showers, and jetted tubs. You can arrange for a full-spa package in the privacy of your own room. Be sure to enjoy the fine dining offered by all of these inns, and the small-town flavors that spice up any holiday. No matter how you celebrate, you’ll enjoy Talbot County. Holly Jolly HAVE A
SEASON
WITH SENIORS THIS YEAR by Rick Mundy
A
s the festivities, parties, and revelry of the holiday season ramp up, many folks may want to give thought to engaging their older friends and relatives in the fun in a sensible way. Everyone’s situation is different, as older parents, aunts and uncles, or friends may live alone in their own home, in a nursing home, or assisted living facility. Or they may live with you. The important thing is to be mindful of their needs and wants and help them enjoy this time for added friendship, fellowship, and fun. An excellent first step is to spend time talking with the seniors in your life and asking what they hope to accomplish this season and how you can help them achieve their plans. There are a myriad of chores associated with holiday preparations as we all well know. Your senior friends have many of those same chores and you can ease the burden tremendously by giving a hand. Do they need someone to take them shopping? Or, would they like you to pick up some things for them so they don’t have to venture out? Post office trips, extra grocery trips, present wrapping, addressing cards (yes, some people still send them), extra cleaning - the list goes on and on. However, their goals need not be restricted to chores. What would they like to experience during this busy time? A drive through Bull Run Park to enjoy the extraordinary light display? (My mom always enjoyed that, especially
56
with young children along). There are concerts galore to attend. A big favorite is the Marine Corps concert and sing-along at Wolf Trap in early December - watch the weather and dress for cold. It always seems to be quite chilly. Your family activities and rituals are another great opportunity for the older relatives to join in. Make sure to include them where it’s possible, whether that means attending Sally’s school play or helping with a party or meal that includes them. Have them hang the first ornament when trimming the tree. As long as they’re able, many seniors like to be active and make a contribution. So you don’t usually need to tell them to “take it easy.” Hand Grandma the vegetable peeler and let her go to town with those carrots. Some Safety/Health Concerns Now that we’ve got Aunt Edith and Neighbor Jones moving and grooving to all the busy activities of the season, let’s also take a moment to consider the challenges of this most stressful time of year: 1) T here is an ever-present danger of getting over-tired. As anxious as your friends may be to participate in everything, recognize that age presents physical limits and your senior may tire easily with the added activity. Allow for that possibility, check with them regularly, and plan accordingly. Schedule breaks or nap time
VivaTysons | HOLIDAY 2012 vivatysons.com
for them to rest. In a busy house, you might even designate a quiet room where Poppy can sneak off and spend some time alone to chill. 2) A lso watch out for the “holiday blues.” While anyone can experience low moments or a letdown at various times during the holidays, seniors are especially prone to depressed thoughts at this time of year and should be monitored. Plan activities that get folks outside if possible or at least into well-lit rooms. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is at play during the shorter, darker days of winter, so anything that can brighten the occasion is beneficial. 3) T ake time to make sure your seniors (and the rest of the family) eat well. With the hustle and bustle of extra errands and events, it’s easy to skip a meal or create longer stretches between meals. Plan to stop and eat at appropriate times. At the same time, make sure there are healthy foods around. We can all be tempted by Christmas cookies and candies so it's wise to limit their availability and focus on healthy, balanced meals. (Even on Christmas morning, my annoying parents (LOL) always made us kids eat some semblance of a healthy breakfast BEFORE we opened presents). 4) I f you’re having your older friends over to your home, keep safety in mind. Confirm that hallways, etc. are accessible and free of obstructions (move all those boxes for Christmas lights back to the basement). Watch for throw rugs and other obstacles that someone could trip or slip on. For those who are regular visitors to your home but may suffer from some memory issues, be aware that rearranging the furniture could cause confusion. Make This Season a Positive Joyful Time for All! Our older friends have many memories and so much to offer. Take advantage of this and invite them to share those memories and their stories with the whole family. They will love the chance to bring earlier times to life once again and everyone will learn what Christmas was like “back when I was a child.” May you find true joy in sharing this season. Happy Holidays!
What To Give Your Senior Loved Ones This Year Again we start by advising you to simply ask if there are things your senior would like. This will result in one of two responses: either a) “anything is fine,” or b) “you don’t need to get me anything. I’ve got all I need. Just being with you is gift enough.” But if you press a little, or if the person is like my father-in-law who loved getting presents, you may get some useful ideas. A prevalent bit of advice is that you generally want to avoid things that take up space. My grandmother, living in a nursing home, gave strict orders that we must not give her anything because she had but a single room that was already full. Besides, she claimed she was old and didn’t need anything. With that in mind there are many thoughtful gifts that seniors will enjoy. 1) Gift cards for restaurants or almost any retailer are always handy and take no space. With those, the recipient can buy what they want when they want. It might be an evening out or a new clothing item, but it’s done on their terms. 2) T hen there are gifts of time or help. While you probably already share time and help with your loved one, this can be targeted as a special afternoon for just the two of you, doing something different that you wouldn’t usually do together. Or, you can complete a certain project for your loved one that you know needs to be done. 3) Give them one of their favorite foods. Yes, it takes space but it will be consumed so it won’t take space for long. 4) G ive tickets to the movies or a concert that you know they would like. Offer to be their date or offer to drive them and their date as appropriate. 5) M ake a donation to their favorite cause in their name or buy a farm animal for a needy family in Nicaragua through Food for the Poor or similar organizations. There are countless opportunities like these where your gift will make a huge difference in others’ lives. These are just a few suggestions. Have fun coming up with your own ideas for that special friend this year and watch their eyes light up.

COLLEEN'S CHRISTMAS IN
Great Falls
by Colleen Sheehy Orme
T
he air is crisp as I make my way into Great Falls Village. It is the long established center of town where Georgetown Pike meets Walker Road. My family made its way here in 1964 and settled just two blocks away. I stand at this iconic center of town and though much has changed, I would say little has changed. It remains the intersection of quaint meets metropolitan. It is still home to the charming small town businesses that boast coveted products and the loyalty and customization that makes them worth traveling for. I step off the curb, breathe in that jolting winter air, stop long enough to capture my youthful holiday past and hit the ground ready to create my holiday present.
Katie’s Coffee The well worn path to Katie’s Coffee welcomes me as the door swings open. I often start my day here so the predictably warm, joyfully sweet staff offers me my vice before the words escape my mouth to order. It is an inviting and happy spot that brings locals and visitors of all kinds. The seats are stuffed with business people, tennis girls, lone computer mavericks, and mothers with children. I am so comfortable here that my friend Annie calls this my ‘office.’ She is correct. I can often be found pounding the computer keys for an impending deadline. A baffling concept to many, as writing is a solitary discipline.
60
However, I am the youngest of a large, robust Irish family. The surrounding action makes me feel grounded enough to feel comfortably energized. I buy gift cards for Katie’s Tea, the first item on my list of ‘checking it once and checking it twice,’ to get crossed off. The tea is an experience of delight created by Executive Chef, John Conway. A luxury for all those who savor dainty china tea cups meeting their lips, as yummy tea sandwiches and desserts sit on top of pressed white linen tablecloths. I grab one of Chef John’s distinctively Irish Scones, shout my goodbyes and find my way out the door. I stuff my gift certificates in my purse. I relish the thought of delivering them to my sisters, sister-in-law, and niece for an afternoon well spent.
Grandmother’s Back Room I make my way down the steps and to Grandmother’s Back Room (www.grandmothersbackroom.com) in search of the perfect children’s gift. Too many sweet little things to choose from. The shop is home to special items that can’t be found in many children’s departments. There are exquisite Christening gowns, handmade sweaters, and smartly smocked dresses that scream to be taken home. I spot a fun Virginia Tech hand-woven “Hokie” hat, that every Hokie baby should model. I stop to squeeze and examine the cutest of stuffed animals nestled sweetly

next to treasured books. I take in the receiving blankets and personalized pillows as well as the other countless and unique gifts.
Adeler’s Jewelers I bid my goodbye and I make my way across the ‘Village Green’ towards Adeler’s Jewelers (www. adelerjewelers.com). Their charming store is reminiscent of their distinct design. As I approach I am reminded of a recent chat with Jorge Adeler. His passion for design was ever present, but what impressed me most was his recognition of the intense intimacy which jewelry truly signifies. On that visit, Jorge spoke eloquently of the family business that he and his wife built and that his talented daughters have now joined. I sat across from him as he explained the powerful significance of the band on his finger. The band he twists with meaning, is filled with love. It has been created with pieces of gold that once belonged to his wife, his daughters, and other members of his family. He melted these treasures and brought them new significance. I am jolted back to the present as I hear the door close behind me. My eyes are slammed with beauty. It is hard for a sparkle junkie like me to ignore. Each piece as distinctively gorgeous as the Adeler trademark demands. I am instinctually drawn to the three dogs that make this business home. I am also an animal junkie. Their eloquent doggie manners keep them behind the counter. They are as precisely trained as is the artistry in this place they call home. December marks their grand holiday sale. A DO NOT MISS for any jewelry addict within several states. I bring the jewels to life, well at least to my life, as I try them on for holiday size. The pink sapphire calls my name. The Adler girls, Wendy and Val, have an energy that beautifully belongs to this place. They are a family,
vivatysons.com
a business, and a part of the community. They are a perfect complement to their father. I hate to leave all that glitters and gold. I have decided that I want to create a wondrous consolidation of love much like the one Jorge lovingly twisted on his hand, a family heirloom that will be customized and all our own.
Great Dogs of Great Falls I grab my sweet and somewhat wild chocolate lab Hazel before I make my way across the street and into Great Dogs of Great Falls (www.greatdogsofgreatfalls.com). It is after all, the season to sparkle and my crazy Hazy is looking for her doggie equivalent of the little black dress. Hazel slams through the door and a few people before throwing herself at the staff. She embarrasses her mommy, screaming for attention as though she gets positively none at home.
HOLIDAY 2012 | VivaTysons
61
Truth be told all of my friends know she is my spoiled baby. Proud mommy that I am I let her shamelessly beg for attention and promise to pick her up when she is looking grand enough to once again pose like a present under the tree. It’s hard to make my way out because there are too many perfectly wonderful goodies to choose from to spoil my Hazel with once she is washed and wondrous. What is it about doggie toys that make you squeeze them? I look at the holiday, candy colored, and striped collars. How striking Hazel would look in one of those! I want to buy her a snowman, elf, and candy cane toy, but I need to come back so that I can surprise her with those under the tree. I spy the perfect leopard doggie bed for only the chicest pooches. It’s no wonder Oprah owns the same brand for her canine companions. As I turn to leave I spy Fiesta Ware dog bowls. Who knew?
Maison et Jardin I saunter down the sidewalk and make my way into Maison et Jardin (www.maisonetjardinltd.com). It is a treat for me as the women here are as fun and fabulous as the items they sell for my home. Their decorating magic mojo has transformed this stunning shop into trees that transform a grown woman into a child. I am nearly pushed into toddler form, needing to be dragged out of the store, demanding “Mine, all mine.” It’s one of those moments where I don’t know whether to be happy for them or sad for me. I want my house and my tree to look exactly like this. They are comfortable in their talent, casually demonstrating this is really no big deal to them. They offer to help me make this magic happen on my own turf. Wow! That would be fabulous. I am looking for several gifts. There is a little something for everyone on my list. I find exquisite holiday decorations and extremely ‘entertaining’ (excuse the pun) hostess gifts. In each nook and cranny there is something that every homeowner will crave. I find myself magnetized to their “Elf On A Shelf” tree and vow to bring the little ones on my list back for a peek. I shout to my ‘store’ shopping buddies and they indulge me with a ‘I swear you are no bother’ look as I once again take them from their box filled unpacking duties. There are so many other places to visit, but I have chatted in small town manner and made my way through only a few retail wonders. I have to fetch my Hazel as she is a bit ‘noisy’ once she is done with her spa treatment.
Dante’s Restaurant
Celebration of Lights Dusk is settling through the town I call home signaling it is time for the “Celebration of Lights,” Saturday, December 1st from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Great Falls Village Centre Hill. It strikes the beginning of the holiday light that shines amongst us. Holiday music from the Langley Madrigal Singers moves through me while I sip hot cider. I take in the wonder filled children racing between the petting zoo and pony rides. I wave to Mr. and Mrs. Claus perched grandly on their fire truck escort. It is the 22nd year of this annual tree lighting ceremony. I have enjoyed this annual Great Falls shopping experience so much that I am not yet ready to call it a night.
vivatysons.com
I make my way down Walker Road to the intersection of Colvin Run Road. I park my car and make my way in for a bit of dinner and vino at Dante’s Restaurant (www.danterestaurant. com). It is the perfect ending to my holiday hoopla. The twinkling lights setting off the perfect majesty of the stately old building. It’s solid, stately structure making it just the right place to escape the cold and retreat into one of their many, charming rooms to sip, savor, and celebrate the season. I slide into my chair, grab my wine and reach for the scrumptious bread in front of me. I have to taste their signature tomato topped bread first, as it is my favorite. I order a delicious pasta choice realizing that I have never ever been disappointed in a meal, or the service in this grand ole place. I sip, savor, and celebrate the intersection of people, presents, and purpose, and this place I call home. author: Colleen Sheehy Orme, is a freelance journalist and marketing consultant in Great Falls. ormec686@aol.com.

here is a quote by Roger Babson, “Let him who would enjoy a good future waste none of his present.” It is a nod to living the ‘experience’ of life.
The holiday bustle alternates demanding attention to detail and reminding the precious value of time spent with loved ones. It is also a time where the world opens up wide enough to see outside the four walls of home. So why not look beyond the beautifully wrapped gift box and on to the adventure side of giving? Why not give the gift of experience? Excitations (www.excitations. com) delivers exciting adventures. They believe “Give a Gift... Give a Memory.” A look at their wide and exciting selections leaves something for every dream and every walk of life. Santa Claus
&
Thomas Nast by John McMahon
The man behind today's Santa
S
ANTA! You recognize this portly, joyous, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, whitecuffed red pants, black leather belt, and boots. This image of Santa became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century thanks to the drawings of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. It’s been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children’s books, and films. The ubiquitous Cocoa-Cola ad campaign has reinforced this depiction of Santa. This jolly old elf image has influenced the modern perceptions of Father Christmas, Sinterklaas, and Saint Nicholas in European culture. Thomas Nast (Sept. 27, 1840 – Dec. 7, 1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist who is considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon.” He was the scourge of William Magear “Boss Tweed” and the corrupt New York City Tammany Hall political machine. Among his notable works was the political symbol of the elephant for the Republican Party. His editorial cartoons highly influenced both Lincoln and Grant’s election victories. He popularized the symbols of Uncle Sam, Columbia (the female personification of American values), and the Democratic donkey, though contrary to popular belief, Nast did not create them.
on the verge of failing out. After school, he started working in 1856 as a draftsman for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. On March 19, 1859, his drawings appeared for the first time in Harper’s Weekly. Nast first drew Santa Claus for the Christmas season on the Harper’s Weekly cover and center-fold illustration in 1863 to memorialize the family sacrifices of the Union during the dark early days of the Civil War. Nast was a Radical Republican, a liberal, progressive, nationalistic, and a fierce supporter for the Union. He skillfully used allegory and melodrama in his art to support the causes he believed in. Nast’s Santa appeared as a kindly figure representing Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of Christ. Santa was depicted as a small elf-like figure who supported the Union. His use of Santa Claus was sad for
Nast was born in the barracks of Landau, Germany, the son of a trombonist in the Bavarian 9th regiment band. He had a half sister named Andie. The elder Nast’s socialist political convictions put him at odds with the Bavarian government, and in 1846 he left Landau, enlisting first on a French manof-war and subsequently on an American ship. He sent his wife and children to New York City, and at the end of his enlistment in 1850 he joined them there. Thomas Nast’s passion for drawing was apparent from an early age. Nast attended school in New York City from the age of six to fifteen, including the National Academy of Design but he was forced to drop out because of financial problems. It’s been said Nast had problems adjusting to his new life in America and never took well to school. He was not a particularly good speller and spent his entire school career

In the background, a sign can be seen that reads “Welcome Santa Claus.” The illustration shows Santa handing out gifts to children and soldiers. One soldier receives a new pair of socks, and Santa is pictured sitting on his sleigh, which is being pulled by reindeer. Santa is pictured with a long white beard, a furry hat, collar, and belt. Many of our modern perceptions of Santa Claus are demonstrated.
celebration of Christmas, with its commercialized gift exchanges, developed in cities, led by New York, after 1880. Today Nast’s Santa Claus thrives in American culture, crossing both Christian and secular boundaries. (Sources: Ohio State University Press)
When Nast created his image of Santa Claus he was drawing on his native German tradition of Saint Nicholas, a fourth century bishop known for his kindness and generosity. In the German Christian tradition, December 6th is Saint Nicholas day, a festive day honoring Saint Nicholas and a day of gift giving. Nast combined this tradition of Saint Nicholas with other German folk traditions of elves to draw his Santa in 1862. Some may claim that Nast “invented” Santa Claus in 1862 but it overlooks the centuries-long contributions from multiple sources and cultures that went into Nast’s Santa. During the Civil War, although not yet a holiday, Christmas was a traditional festival celebration in the United States. (It was President Grant who signed an Act making the 1st Day of January, the 25th Day of December, the 4th Day of July, and Thanksgiving Day, Holidays, on June 28, 1870). In Nast’s time, Christmas was not a day when offices or factories closed; but the development of Christmas as a holiday and the use of Santa Claus as a secular symbol of gift giving removed from its Christian roots occurred during Nast’s lifetime. In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore wrote the poem A Visit From St. Nicholas (popularly known by its first line: Twas the Night Before Christmas). The poem helped popularize the tradition of exchanging gifts, and seasonal Christmas shopping began to assume economic importance. Charles Dickens' poem A Christmas Carol (December 1843) is credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America, after a period of sobriety. -THE FUTURE
by Colleen Sheehy Orme
T
he giving season is a reminder that there are many in need. Though racing from festive infused shopping to sipping frothy egg nog it's a time to reach out and remember community.
The dilemma for many in this new digital, fast paced world is not wanting to give, but how to give? The commitment and desire is present, but the time is far too precious. Enter, B-thrifty (www.b-thrifty.com), a super thrift store with more than 250,000 items. A forerunner in the visionary commerce of tomorrow, B-thrifty is a business based on giving back to the community. They are dedicated to ‛recycling.’ A transforming concept in the world of ‛thrift.’ It is a reminder that there is a great value not only in the items they offer, but in the concept of re-purposing those items to help others. They are ‘b-green’ at B-thrifty. Though many enjoy the benefits of thrift stores, B-thrifty is centered around helping those who can’t really afford certain things. They are a community-centric business. Case in point, B-thrifty will partner with local churches and collect their donations. They then give their parishoners in need a B-thrifty card that allows them to select from their massive collection. A fabulous benefit as a church may have a limited selection of donated items for a family to choose from.

B-thrifty is presenting an exciting movement towards ‘for profit’ businesses rooting themselves in philanthropic purpose. The future demands businesses that make it easier for us to give perhaps because our over stimulated lives make it more difficult to make the time for it. B-thrifty will come and pick up any items an individual would like to donate and recycle, be it clothing, electronics, housewares, furniture, etc. They will even retrieve couches and beds which are traditionally much more difficult to have picked up. “B-thrifty is convenient,” says Alonso Zamora, one of the owners. “We are able to make it easy.” The truth is, B-thrifty is extremely efficient in both the needs of those who want to recycle their belongings, and those who benefit from the recycling. In addition to picking up items from individual households, B-thrifty invites businesses to participate as well. “We come out and put our recycling boxes at area businesses,” says Zamora. “We also participate in community outreach with local partners.” Terri Fischer, Director of Corporate Partners for the National Association of Professional Organizers, D.C. Chapter, has partnered with B-thrifty. “B-thrifty has participated in a significant and impactful way with our community service project with A Wider Circle

(www.awidercircle.org), a program working to end poverty in the D.C. metro area,” says Fischer. “At his own expense, Alonso Zamora hauled numerous truckloads of discards that were cluttering up the Wider Circle warehouse, so that these items might be recycled and to make processing of new donations to the charity possible,” says Fischer. “In addition, he and his son supplied many hours of volunteer labor, working with NAPO-WDC to assist Wider Circle in organizing their warehouse.” Fischer like others who have experienced B-thrifty, value the experience. "There are options other than donating to a 501c that can be very worthwhile and beneficial all the way around,” says Fischer. Depending on the day of the week B-thrifty offers discounts, be it for a federal holiday, for seniors, or for the armed forces, police, and firefighters. B-thrifty also has a program that allows free clothes for kids in need and donates three outfits every six months.
duty to basically help out. Those are the kinds of things that B-thrifty wants to do. To reach out to businesses, non-profits, government, and the local community to make a difference. We want to change one community at a time.” If this holiday season invites you to want to give and recycle a few items from your home then you can feel good doing so. Just call B-thrifty and Alonso Zamora at 703-496-5100 and in the thoughtful words of Terri Fischer, "Consider it your contribution to a better community."
