Bc. Viktor KĂĄkoĹĄ, born 26.4.1993 in Bratislava studied at CTU Prague and National University of Singapore (NUS) Work experience: ECDM, Paris / David Kraus studio, Prague

My name is Viktor KĂĄkoĹĄ, for the last year living in Singapore, previous 3 years living in Prague. In 2009, I did one semester on Brainerd High School in Minessota, U.S.A, where I improved my english language skills. Nowadays I am moving back to Western countries, to apply the mixture of both Western knowledge, gained during my 3 years of studies at CTU Prague, and Eastern knowledge, gained on NUS in Singapore. Apart from artistic and technical skills gained during studies at CTU, I am also highly interested into deep thinking and searching for core meaning in architecture, realising the fact that architecture is not a separated entity, but is connected with economics, politics, philosophy etc. During my studies I have been always searching for global aspects of economic resilience, question of capitalism and social politics or the knowledge of linking architectonic terms with sensations, as well as on local level, looking for answers of looking for local social and physical context or preserving European cultural heritage. My 2-semestral stay in Singapore allowed me not only to see these problems from broad perspective, but also to compare the western and eastern way of thinking about them. Therefore I was able to take the best from both of these views and create an overall image, that allows me to make informed and responsible decisions. During my studies on CTU, apart from this critical thinking I also learned wide range of techical and craftmen skills. Mainly during my graduate thesis, which included complete technical project of a building, including Civil engineering, Technical details, Building managment, Static calculations, Engineering equipment and Fire safety or Interior solution. Apart from these technical skills, I also gained experience with using computer programs, mainly AutoCad, Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, as well as Revit, ArchiCad or Google Sketchup.

My last professional experience was working in the architecture studio of David Kraus, who had previously been the head of my school architecture studio. In his studio I was the project manager for the project of hotel in Oman, that I worked on from the very beginning by proposing the initial concept until finishing the study and presenting it through drawings and renderings. Previously, I had an internship at ECDM studio in Paris, where I worked on projects in all stages of project development. Most importantly, I co-worked on finishing two competitions - housing La Chapelle in Paris and school in Marseille. In both projects I worked on making the images, 2D drawings in Revit and AutoCad, schemes, diagrams and maquettes. Previous professional experience was designing a small office house for a private investor, cooperating with co-worker Filip Galko. This project is now in process of re-fining and financial evaluating, we hope to succesfuly finish it and transform it into reality. Apart from this academic and professional experience I am interested in writing, both connected to architecture and not. For that related with architecture, I am passionate about writing narrative descriptions to projects (both for me and for others), or short stories related to these projects. As an example, in Petr Hajek studio in 4th semester I wrote a book including short story about each project, and this book was a part of the studio exhibition. As for a work motivation, I consider myself a very hardworking and motivated person, with hunger and passion for progress and getting more and more into depth of architectonic questions, with interested in stepping out of my comfort zone. I am aware of the fact that gaining this progress is not only about academic education and Graduate degree, but also professional experience, craftsmenship and teamwork.

1/ SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE CTU Prague - David Kraus studio

Setting was to create a project of a school of architecture, including creation of a new school system, choosing a site and then make a detailed project. Included in this process was the task to create our own opinion on current system of architectural education. As a site, I chose the site of the current architecture faculty in the CTU uniClasses without an order, a package for bachelor degree and a package for master degree. Studio itself is vertical, all-embracing, “divine”. I am choosing the studio first, then other courses. At the same time I should not have the feeling of being a visitor in a teachers´ institution. Transforming this concept into form in a shape of objects of individual courses = formal spaces with particular process inside, form follows their purpose. These objects are surrounded by non-formal spaces = studio - filler of everything else, non-specific, free form, something I take, make, claim as my own. 2 inspirations - abstract images. First, an engine / machine, every object is a component of this machine, they work together. Second inspiration - brain, as a symbol of connections of these components, their designation into groups and “hemispheres”. Engine under the bonnet, brain in an oil. Choose.

2/ CITY HOUSE WITH STUDIOS OF ACADEMY OF ARTS CTU Prague - Bachelor thesis - Ondřej Císler studio

Jan Palach square. City centre, Vlatava river, city. Confrontation with a stone architecture of titans who anticipated us. Basic expectation is the effort of sensitive and contextual solution. On the other hand an important move, that will change the place either way- that means not an ïnvisible”solution. Town house on the corner of Křižovnická and Kaprova street has been without maintenance for too long. There are only few houses with such position. Students will have to ask the question if to demolish the house or to rebuild it completely, with what function, and how to use the potential of the locality. House udoubtly balances on the edge of kitsch. It provokes by it´s expressionism, it´s disposition keeps the character of 19th century town houses, it provides a platform for different functions, as for design studios, as for hotel, student accomodation, gallery.. To leave the space empty and say, that people will make there what they want is alibistic to the core, but I think, that this is one of the few examples, where it doesn´t matter. I take design studio as something specific, where anything from making a statue, through a small rap concert to “ chopping the wood” can occur. Therefore it´s difficult to define it. The house somehow resembles some kind of fancy obviousness. Row of columns, an alley that is not an alley, that creates the spine of the house, 2-floor entrance hall, central staircase with wide central walkway and division of spaces between those for work and those for wee and making food. Then a low wall, on which you can sit with a book or it serves as a bar and at the same time it´s a cubboard for slippers, bottles of wine and toothbrushes. Then some wall-paper, paving with ornaments, two balconie s for smoking and sun tanning and railing with flowery decoration. Yes, the house has a big dose of showing-off formalism in it. Elevators are big, entrance space is big, ceilings are high. But we are on Jan Palach square in Prague. And that´s the way I think it should be.

3/ VARIABLE SHIPYARD CTU Prague - Petr HĂĄjek studio

Zbraslav mine blended into the city through the time. In 50 years the mining will end. What will happen to the place next? We are trying to answer this question in our research. Shipyards for shipbuilding and maintenance occupy valuable lots on Vltava riverbanks. These lots are worth saving, therefore I projected vertical shipyard into my slot, with capacity of three big building factories. At the same time I react to a problem of these shipyards, which often can´t adapt to the momentary market demands connected with production demands and are forced to stop the production for som time. Therefore this shipyard can modify according to these demands. Separate parts of the production halls are dismantable, so they can be re-built in short period of time, use the space efficiently and reach the maximum production efficiency.

We divided the space of mine into coridors - slots, in which we are “programming architecture.

Every student picked one of these coridors (width 12m, lenght varies from position in the mine from 20 to 650m) and projects it´s own object and function into it, that will give this place a new meaning.

4/ THE LIMITS OF CONTROL Tan Beng Kiang studio - National University of Singapore - urbanism of Xinxing Harbour Village, China

Xinxing Harbour village located on Hainan island in China is in danger of repeated typhoon, that embodies a threat for economical and physical sustainability of the village. The setting was both to provide all economical, social and physical resilience of the village, bonding together engineering solutions with social topics. As the title of the project foreshadows, the main theme of the project is the toextent of controling both physical forces of nature and social processes. In the social point of view, these entities are controled by network as a spine, boundary of growth and new typology serving as a recipe for future growth. This approach provides adaptibility and flexibility through organic, but to some extent controlled growth. In a whole, into initial framework of spine and boundary, we implement small elements of housing, public spaces etc., to create a mosaic picture of the whole village.

Xinxing Harbour VIllage is in danger of annual typhoons, regurarly hitting north coast of Hainan island, causing floods and endangering the rural economy consisting mostly of fish production.

5/ HOUSING IN PILSEN Housing project - 1+XX Roman Koucký design studio

Area in Pilsen around Tyršova street and Jan´s crossroads is nowadays blighted and doesn´t have any specific plan that it could hold on to. Firstly, we planned this area in means of urban planning, then divided it into separate lots. Our task was to create a living space on lots around Tyršova street by projecting a row of city housing. Street facade serves as a display space for cars parked directly in the apartments of their owners. The thought of cars parked in the upper floors of the house came along with the necessity of planning a car elevator instead of ramps due to complicated approachability. Yes, this solution is expensive, very unusual and for many people unimaginable to use, but the exclusiveness and elegance that this element brings is attractive and tempting enough, that it will find it´s clients and brings something new into the city character.

6/ BILLBOARD HOUSE Project for a private investor - cooperation with Filip Galko

Site next to a frequented road, with most of it’s area not suitable for building in order to protect the canalisation zones. Small, financially affordable house, office / design studio with parking. At the same time, this house should serve as an advertisement surface. House as a crutch for something as commercial as adverticing? Maybe? As an inspiration for the house served typical billboard. This concept was precisely generated from locality and demands and restrictions that we had to obey. House stands on two columns, reminding columns of advertisement billboards, on the road side is house facade covered by adverts, so by view from the road it is not clearly visible, if we are looking at a house or a real billboard.

7/ LISBON-BASED PART OF A PROTOTYPE CITY Tay Kheng Soon studio - National University of Singapore

Based on a theories introduced in Thomas Pikkety´s book, “Capital in the 21st century” we are looking for a way of re-structuring society and economic system through a new type of human settlement. This new settlement is a prototype city with area of 1 km2, that is environmentally sustainable, provides both mechanised and humanized economy and works on a social system that lies between capitalism and communism- social sustainability. In our project, this city was divided into 8 parts, while each student filled one of these parts with chosen part of an existing city and then modified it according to these spatial and social conditions. City of Lisbon and its part were specifically chosen based on a similar context and suitable dimensions, network and typology. With philosophy of doing ”the minimum I need instead of the maximum I can”, it was chosen according to only minimal changes necessarily done to implement it into our prototype city. While working with the process of integrating this environment with specific functions and types of public space, instead of creating particular solutions, I created a set of rules that will both let space for the free market and fit our scheme of creating new economy and education system as well as shaping the environment according to the new social system we introduce in our project.
