VMNH Annual Report

No Limits From May 2008 through June 2010, I had the great honor of serving as chair of the VMNH Board of Trustees. During that time, the museum’s staff dealt with many challenges, from moving millions of scientific collections from the old facility to the newly built museum, to continually adding to and enhancing the museum’s many diverse temporary and permanent exhibits. The museum also faced a change in leadership with the departure of Tim Gette as executive director. Gloria Niblett, director of administration and services, provided effective and inspired leadership of the museum as interim executive director, maintaining the museum’s continual improvements and enhancements.

In February 2010, the museum was fortunate to welcome Dr. Joe Keiper as its new executive director. Joe has brought new energy, enthusiasm, and fresh ideas to the museum, with several new exhibits and programs in place and many more innovative projects in the works. Despite the challenges faced by VMNH, the museum continues to excel as a vibrant, active institution with no limits to its potential.

Challenges and Opportunities The Foundation has emerged from a year in which we — like everyone — felt the effects of the economic downturn. The museum made many adjustments to do more with less. Still, as we continued to inform and cultivate, we were fortunate to receive much-appreciated gift support from individuals, corporations and foundations. Guided by a talented and engaged Board, and supported by a capable and dedicated staff, we have raised nearly $3.5 million in pledges toward our goal of $4 million for exhibits, nearly completing phase one of our

capital campaign. Event highlights of the year included the huge hit, “Mollusk Madness,” and another successful golf tournament. The Young Friends of VMNH continued to offer creative activities to attract new members. Jefferson Awards were presented to deserving recipients, and Dr. Joe Keiper became the museum’s new Executive Director. Joe’s energy and fresh perspective are providing new opportunities to garner support. The Foundation strives to supplement the State’s generous support to the museum with gifts, providing a

margin of excellence that enhances the museum’s potential to be all that it can be. To our supporters, we thank you and encourage you to visit the museum often to see what your investments have made possible. Gail D. Smith

DIRECTOR

2009-2010 was a tough economic period for everyone. Despite this, I arrived at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in February and was impressed to see an institution that met the economic challenges head-on. The board, staff, and volunteers all worked together to make the Museum a first class destination in Martinsville, and indeed 33,279 people toured our galleries and attended our education programs, while over 250,000 citizens of Virginia and beyond experienced our traveling and online exhibits, blogs, Web site and social media outreach programs. New exhibits included Wildlife Art Revealed which showcased the strong tie between art and nature. Messages from the Mesozoic opened in January and 700 visitors enjoyed our Dino Days family festival. Bug Daze was held in May and was well attended. It gave me the opportunity to relive my days as a museum entomologist and I conducted mini field trips to Wilson Park to explore the concepts of decomposition and forensic science. This experience allowed me to interact face-to-face with dozens of our members and visitors. After spending a day with these

supporters, it is no wonder that the museum was able to drive forward with quality programming even during these challenging times! While exhibits, education, and public programming are such a vital part of who we are and what we do, the quality science we conduct behind-the-scenes is often overlooked. Our curators are leaders in their field, holding distinguished positions in international organizations. Our Library acquired the MacCord Collection making it one of the country’s best libraries for eastern Atlantic archaeology. The number of specimens we house and care for grew, and that is made possible by the forward thinking people who aspired to open the newest natural history museum back in 2007. Behind-the-scenes at VMNH houses a world-class facility with precious specimens that indeed make us a unique institution. As Americans pull themselves from the grips of economic recession, the museum works to produce successful research, exhibits, and educational programs. We will need your help to maintain our service to the natural sciences and the Commonwealth. Please continue to support the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and we will remain determined to successfully interpret our natural heritage for all citizens.

The 14th Annual Virginia Science Standards Institute (VSSI) was held at Twin Lakes State Park July 19  – 24, 2009 and at Hungry Mother State Park, August 2–7, 2009. A total of 41 fourth and fifth grade teachers from 30 school divisions participated.

Responding to the needs of our target population, the department overhauled summer camps in 2009. Camps expanded to day-long and week-long adventures for various age groups. Before and after care as well as on-site meal options were added. The Rock-it Science Camp took place July 22 – 25 in collaboration with the Virginia Air and Space Center with support from the Hampton Roads Convention and Visitors Bureau. On July 22 and 23, students at VMNH built Lego® lunar rover vehicles, viewed the night sky in the StarLab® inflatable planetarium, explored space using GPS equipment, binoculars and telescopes, and discovered how the Martian rover got to the surface of Mars. Students traveled to Hampton on July 24 and 25 and toured NASA Langley and stayed overnight at the Virginia Air and Space Center. While there, students built and launched their own rockets.

HEIST VMNH staff hosted a museum visit and field trip for the 2010 Hollins Elementary Science Institute for Teachers. HESIT is a professional development workshop for Virginia teachers in Roanoke City and County, Salem, Botetourt, Floyd, Franklin and Craig Counties who teach grades 3 – 5. Led by Drs. Casey and Beard, participants toured the museum and went on a Piedmont geology field trip to collect classroom samples of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

Fort Monroe Along with the Federal Area Development Authority and several other museums, VMNH staff are participating in concept planning for the reuse of Fort Monroe after the Army vacates the Fort on September 14, 2011. Drs. Beard and Casey are also working with a group of other natural resources agencies on a report to the Historic Preservation Advisory Group and Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority with recommendations regarding the natural, recreational, and educational uses of Old Point Comfort.

Southwestern Piedmont Virginia Master Naturalist Staff members are currently serving in leadership roles in local chapters of the Virginia Master Naturalists in the Charlottesville and Martinsville areas. The Southwestern Piedmont Chapter held its third member training in the fall of 2009.

The MHC After 3 sites participated in the After-School Science Plus program through December.

“Partners in Academic Excellence” Award Education staff members recognized Patrick Henry Elementary School’s participation in museum education programs by presenting the school’s Parent-Teachers Organization with the “Partners in Academic Excellence Award” during a PTO meeting in April 2010. VMNH educators delivered 175 outreach programs to kindergarten through fifth-grade students at the Martinsville City Public School during the 2009-2010 school year. The school also took part in the Meaningful Watershed Education Experience grant with the museum through watershed stewardship and education using school grounds and neighboring Wilson Park.

Highlights in Research and Collections VMNH Scientists in Leadership positions VMNH Scientists continue to be leaders in national and international scientific organizations. Dr. James Beard, director of research and collections and curator of earth sciences, is completing his term as chair of the Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA). Beard is the founding chair of this division. During its first year, over 1,000 professional and student members from around the nation and around the world joined this group, making it one of the largest divisions within the GSA. Dr. Judith Winston, curator of marine biology, was appointed to the International Committee on Zoological Nomenclature. This prestigious group approves the names of all newly discovered animal species and ratifies any changes to existing species classifications or names. Winston is also immediate past-president of the American Microscopical Society.

Dr. Nancy Moncrief, curator of mammalogy, is Secretary of the Biology Division of the Virginia Academy of Sciences. Dr. Elizabeth Moore, curator of archaeology, is president of the Archeological Society of Virginia, and is chair of the State Review Board for the National Register of Historic Places. Moore also serves as treasurer of the Middle Atlantic Archaeology Conference.

Exhibits One of the exhibit highlights of the year is the new Hahn Hall of Biodiversity, featuring the spectacular African mammal collections of Dr. Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr., President Emeritus of Virginia Tech. Dr. Nancy Moncrief, curator of mammalogy, worked with other VMNH staff to secure funding and develop the exhibit.

RESEARCH &

Field work Dr. Alton Dooley, associate curator of paleontology, continues to make new discoveries at the Caroline County, Virginia site 20 miles north of Richmond. This year alone, Dooley has published several papers on fossil finds at this site, including evidence that one of the whale species there fed by scooping and sifting mud from the ocean floor –— and broke its jaw doing so.

Publications VMNH scientific staff produced over 15 publications during the past year, including a long-awaited re-interpretation by Dr. James Beard of the conditions under which the remarkable insect fossils at the Solite Quarry in Cascade, Virginia were preserved, along with several descriptions of new species by Dr. Richard Hoffman, curator emeritus of recent invertebrates, and Dr. Judith Winston, curator of

marine biology. Dr. Alton Dooley, associate curator of paleontology, published evidence for both the species diversity and paleoenvironment of the Miocene whale site in Caroline County, Virginia.

Collections

Dr. Noel T. Boaz Director’s Award at this year’s VMNH Foundation Thomas Jefferson Awards and continues to lead an active field trip program while working on the Paleo chapter for the Geology of Virginia volume. Hoffman continues to work at a prodigious pace, publishing regularly and always retaining a keen interest in museum affairs.

There have been several major acquisitions this year, including a well-documented collection of Paleozoic fossil plants donated by a long-time mine inspector. This donated collections has greatly improved our coverage of Virginia fossil plants. Several archaeology collections were also acquired, including many boxes of material from a site near Altavista, Virginia.

Curators Emeritus VMNH continues to benefit from the daily presence of our two curators emeritus, Drs. Lauck Ward and Richard Hoffman. Ward received the
