VMRB Matters WELCOME TO AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2013

From Your President, Neil Behind the scenes we keep plugging away with our fundraising activities. I am pleased to advise that our efforts have been rewarded with a number of our grant applications approved: Towards the end of June I received a phone call from Kerry Millard MP advising that our application to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for assistance with replacing our ageing tables and chairs that we use in our Hall was successful. Our application was supported by Kerry, Cr Victoria Newton and Wayne Swan MP – thank you. We hope to have the new tables and chairs in place prior to our AGM in September. Shortly thereafter we received news from the Aurizon Community Giving Fund that our request for assistance with replacing the VHF radios in our Radio Room was successful. As many of our crew members would know, we have had considerable problems with the existing radio for some time so we hope that the new radios will solve our problems. The last time we received support from Aurizon we were able to purchase a defibrillator and first aid training equipment - thanks Aurizon for your continued support. The Port of Brisbane has been a long-time supporter of our Club. I was delighted to hear that our application to the Port of Brisbane to refurbish our Radio Room and install the AIS system on two of our rescue vessels was successful. This support will help to make our vessels safer to use and provide a much improved environment for our crews. We extend our greatest appreciation to the Port of Brisbane for their ongoing support. Collectively these grants have provided our Club with in excess of $40,000! Thank you to all those involved and those who supported us. Energex has been our primary sponsor for many years. This year-on-year support is very valuable to our Club as it helps us to provide as safe as possible environment for our Crews and effectively attend to our vital search and rescue activities. We are extraordinarily fortunate to enjoy the ongoing support of an organisation like Energex. Both Membership and Hardstand renewal fees fell due on 30 June. Thanks to all those who have paid their renewals. If you have not paid your renewals then your boom gate access may have already been disabled. If you haven’t received your renewal notice, or you have a query, please contact our Membership Officer, Greg Keough, as soon as possible. Our AGM is scheduled for 24 September. If you feel that you can make a contribution to the running of our Club then please don’t hesitate to contact me. Safe Boating

Neil Sheppard, President

From the Editor There is Open Day on 8th September, and the next big event for us after that is our Annual General Meeting on 24th September. Nomination and Proxy Forms and the Agenda are available on pages 13 and 14. Our Junior Vice-President, Luke Hillyard, has been very busy but we agreed with him that members who are not involved with duty days should know exactly what a typical crew day is like so you can look at a picture diary on page 8. Perhaps it will make you reevaluate the extent of your participation and Richard Miles will be happy to talk to you if you would like to assist our volunteers. Although I’m sorry the Lionfish Dive Club has lost their perfect arrangement with Ocean Cat due to owner George’s retirement, I was delighted to receive their newsletter which is reproduced on page 12. Earle Alexander and his son, Nick, had a wonderful time in Europe recently and you can read about their mystery trip on page 15. I’m grateful to Rae Hirn for all her contributions and thanks to Luke H, James M, Victor K, Rick S, Linda F and Greg K for their photos. Lastly, I’d like to pass on VMRB’s congratulations to Graeme and Shirley Wahry on reaching their Golden Wedding Anniversary. (Check out the handsome couple on page 16.) Happy Reading.

Activations

MONTHLY STATISTICS FOR JUNE-JULY 2013

Date Activity 8th June Assisted a drifting 6m powerboat in Cabbage Tree Creek. 23rd June Towed a 4m powerboat with engine problems from North Quay to West End (Brisbane River). 29th June Towed a 6m powerboat with engine problems from the Brisbane River mouth to Cabbage Tree Creek. 5th July - Towed broken down 9m shark cat from Brisbane River mouth to Rivergate Marina. 7th July Assisted another drifting 6m powerboat in Cabbage Tree Creek. There were 23 training activations in June and 12 in July.

CTC = Cabbage Tree Creek

This isn’t exactly typical but we do come across instances of drifting vessels. In this case, on 8th June, the skipper (left) is admiring his vessel from afar (right) in a very calm Cabbage Tree Creek!

Crews’ News Training Activations provide our crews the necessary time to practice for the various scenarios which we face in the bay. The past two months has seen a heavy focus on Night Training with the aim of increasing the number of night qualified crew at our squadron. Training during the day continued with navigation exercises and vessel handling particularity around Mud and St Helena Islands. As always our crews continue to practice the 4 essential life saving drills - Fire, Flooding, Grounding and Man Overboard. Before setting out in your own vessel it would be worth checking everyone aboard immediately knows what to do should you face these situations while you wait for assistance. When crews arrive for duty, they have no idea what situations they will face during the day. The early starts in winter are usually in the dark and it isn’t until the sun has risen that a decision can be made on the day’s activities - but, of course, a phone call can change these plans! See page 8 for some pictures of a typical day’s duty. Delta Crew were rostered on 8th June and they retrieved a drifting 6m powerboat in Cabbage Tree Creek (see photos above). Foxtrot Crew’s day saw few boats logging on although the conditions were wonderful so they visited Colmslie, Nudgee and Pinkenba ramps. While gaining local knowledge, this allowed them to promote our Waterside Assist membership.

July when a broken down 9m shark cat was towed from Brisbane River mouth to Rivergate Marina. There were 2 people on board. Earlier that day Brian Nelson used his carpet-laying skills to refurbish the radio room verandah. It now is much more serviceable and should have the added advantage of protecting the barbecue area underneath as well. Unsecured power vessels appear to have been a problem in the last couple of months. Sierra Crew assisted with retaining another drifting 6m powerboat in Cabbage Tree Creek on 7th July. Delta Crew organized a tow from the Rouse Channel to the public boat ramp in Cabbage Tree Creek on 13th July. On 20th July Alpha Crew did some extraordinary work to repair the launch trolley. This involved low tide and a real team effort. (See another photo on the back page of Paul Harris, Joe McCoy and Bob Chapman recovering after being hard at work in the mud.) November Crew saw the bay was going to be a great place to be on 21st July so they launched Sandgate 2 and Sandgate Rescue II and manned all the boats to perform man overboard and search patterns. After lunch they headed out and practiced vessel handling including transfer of personnel from boat to boat, both stationary and underway. These exercises certainly gave the crew an understanding of some of the potentially treacherous aspects of a search and rescue situation.

On 23rd June Quebec Crew towed a 4m powerboat with engine problems from North Quay to West End (Brisbane River). A 6m powerboat with engine problems needed to be towed from the Brisbane River mouth to Cabbage Tree Creek on 29th June by Bravo Crew. The fact it is colder has meant the after-hours crews have not been called out much at all lately. However they came to the rescue with Energex Sandgate 1 on 5th

Training News UTC, PETER LEECH In relation to Elements of Shipboard Safety Training, until a member has been assessed and signed off by the UTC then they are not completed. There are a number of persons who have gone past the 6 month period (some well past) and have not yet completed their ESS. A list has been supplied to the President and Duty Master Coordinator and Duty Masters. It is important that members finalise this matter at the earliest opportunity. Please note that compliance staff are currently checking this area out on commercial vessels. The Training and Assessment Schedules 2013 have been completed and are in the Courses Offered folder in the Radio Room. Please remember that the squadron is now required to follow the new training procedure which is Theory Training, Task Book completion, Assignment, Assessment and Practical Assessment. A Local Knowledge Assessment paper has been recently conducted and it was obvious that some persons were not aware of the local knowledge in the Squadron’s area of operations. It would appear that some members had not done sufficient preparation for this subject assessment. Local knowledge is your bread and butter and it is extremely important that ALL members have a very sound knowledge of the area in which they are operating. To obtain your VMRAQ certificate for this subject each member is required to complete a practical assessment with their Duty Master. This consists of locating 6 places on the chart in the Radio Room given the chart name, or a local or nickname for the location. When on board the vessel Energex Sandgate 1, the member from a location in the bay is to give directions to the Duty Master on how to proceed to three positions based on their knowledge of our area of operations. This should be done without reference to the chart. Once the Duty Master has advised the UTC that the member has been deemed competent then the VMRAQ certificate will be issued. It is noted that some members have successfully completed the practical but have not passed the Theory assessment and until the theory is successfully completed a certificate will not be issued. Upon receiving their Radio Operator’s Certificate from AMSA OMC, a member has to undergo a practical test conducted by their Duty Master. This assessment consists of sending and receiving radio messages whilst in the Radio Room and when on board Energex Sandgate 1. Voice procedure will play an important role in this assessment. When the member has been considered competent and the Duty Master has advised the UTC by email then the VMRAQ certificate will be issued. A voice procedure training program to be conducted by Duty Master Bob Chapman will be held on a Saturday during October 2013. It is extremely important that members who have recently obtained their Radio Operator’s certificate attend this course to obtain practical experience. All members requiring a Task Book are to submit a passport-sized photo (with name and signature on the back – the name must be legible) in hard copy to the UTC ASAP.

6 – August/September 2013

Task books will not be issued until a member has completed the ESS training. Some members will have the 2009 book and some will have the 2010 book and there are differences between the two. To identify the differences, a member MUST refer to the 2010 Task Book in the Radio Room. Over the past few months a number of oral and practical assessments have been conducted for ESS and other subjects and many members are just passing these subjects. It is quite apparent that sufficient preparation has not been undertaken prior to the assessment being undertaken. It is important that members undertake sufficient preparation prior to assessment. All members MUST WEAR enclosed footwear when coming onto the base, whether it is for a duty or a visit. VMRAQ OH&S policy states that enclosed footwear MUST be worn at all times. There are no exceptions!!! As I am standing down as UTC from 30 September 2013 this is my last Boat Talk Training News but I will be around to assist in assessing the competency of members training. Safe boating Peter Leech Unit Training Coordinator VMR Brisbane

The answer to last edition's question: The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (IRPCS or ColRegs) indicates the responsibilities between vessels in that which vessel has right of way over another vessel. What is the order of responsibility for all vessels? Responsibilities between vessels are generally covered by Rule 18 of the IRPCS (ColRegs) except where Rules 9, 10 and 13 otherwise require other action. The hierarchy of vessels in order of which vessel has precedence over another is as follows where 1 has the “most right of way” and 7 has the “least right of way”.

1. Vessel not under command 2. Vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre 3. Vessel constrained by draft 4. Vessel engaged in fishing/trawling 5. Sailing vessel 6. Power driven vessel 7. Seaplane This edition's question: The IRPCS Rule 7 talks about the risk of collision. In determining if a risk of collision exists, what considerations shall be among those taken into account?

Treasurer’s Report Many thanks to all those who have paid their renewals via the payment methods listed on the invoices. We are actively processing all these payments and will be following up those who haven't paid in case they have been overlooked. Please be advised if payment of the renewal is not made by 30 July then your access to the club facilities can be restricted and active crew will not be able to man vessels due to insurance requirements.

VMR VICTORIA POINT’S NEW VESSEL Luke Hillyard, myself (Richard Miles) and my 12 year old Ben, headed down south to join the crew at Victoria Point to witness the Service of blessing and naming “Victoria Point 1” their new vessel. We were welcomed at Victoria Point VMR by various crew members and had the opportunity of having a look round the boat prior to the official blessing.

It was a very impressive vessel with all the latest technology. It cost in excess of $320,000 and features new state-of-the-art electronics such as FLIR, Furuno radar and GPS. It is even decked out with an iPad. The 9 metre vessel was built by Woody Marine and had taken 6 months to get just right. The two 300hp Suzuki outboards would make short work of the bay. Ian Ivory (Commodore) open the Service with various welcomes to all who attended and then the service was led by The Rev. William Pearson who is Chaplain to The Mission to Seafarers in Brisbane. Karen Woolan from Bendigo Bank had the honour of pouring Champagne over the new vessel. Afterwards we were invited to join the crew for a tasty BBQ. Luke then kept Ben and myself entertained on the way home with his tales of jet skiing around Moreton Bay. Thanks to the crew at Victoria Point for making us so welcome and we look forward to working with you in your new vessel Victoria Point 1. Richard Miles

Got to love us Seniors During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in an old age home?" "Well," he said, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub." "Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup." "No" he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

Lionfish Dive Group End of an Era Sadly I have to report the Lionfish have had their final charter and last giant stride from Ocean Cat’s duckboard on 23rd June. After 16 years of charters, George is finally retiring himself and Ocean Cat from the commercial charter operations. Some club members who lie regularly about their age dived with Ocean Cat last century, and the Lionfish have had a long and happy association with Ocean Cat since the club's maiden charter in June 2002 (Hendersons Rock). Back then, George raised the bar in Brisbane’s dive scene with unheard of luxuries like a hot shower, a warm comfortable cabin, great food, a catamaran that was a superb dive platform, and most importantly, a skipper and crew who loved diving. We loved it, as did any Brisbane diver who went out for a dive with George. So from all Lionfish, past and present, thank you for the many great dive days out on the bay and outside Cape Moreton. A permanent underwater memorial is planned at a secret location (this is probably code for ‘we haven't figured it out yet’) so stay tuned. Club News Our annual AGM was held on the last social meet (June 18) with all committee places declared open. Thanks to Katherine and Anita who have done the hard yards as secretary and president for the last two years and have stepped down for a well-earned break. The new committee will be Mark Stenhouse to continue on as club treasurer (this is what you get when you do a job well), Scuba Steve to continue on indefatigably as trip director, Richard the First to continue his reign over bar proceedings with John Harris as his lackey (sorry about that but Richard is King you know) and your humble scribe allegedly as secretary (this is what happens when you fail to pay attention). As George has scurrilously retired Ocean Cat from dive charter operations to watch Oprah full time, we will have some new and interesting dive trips to organise. Several club members have already set up some trips (Byron Bay [Scuba Steve], HMAS Brisbane [Marl Purtell] and the work in progress from Simon is Wolf Rock at Rainbow Beach) - thank you for jumping in so quickly to get the ball rolling. I can report that the other Lionfish preoccupation (food! you idiots) has been continuing to exceed expectations. We had a hot pot winter repast before the June AGM which was exceptional. At the end of the meet the usual question was asked "what are we eating at the next social? Unanimous answer: "We will have the same again please." Thank you once again to our very talented cooks. Club Nights: 2nd Tuesday of the month at VMRB 6.30 pm Club Committee Meetings: Last Wednesday of the month 6.30 pm (Venue to be arranged)

Diving News The last Ocean Cat charter was of course full, a lot of fun and tinged with a bit of sadness. The big fan and swell was turned up outside the bay so we opted for a relaxing day at Curtin Artificial Reef. Viz was 10 to 12M on the top of tide static but dropped off for those who chose to do the outgoing drift. The resident Queensland gropers were out and about (a bit shy today), barracuda and some very large blue tusk fish were sighted. Water temperature was 21 degrees. The English submarine armada was also sighted but mainly heard around the wrecks. Club members have also been getting around a bit this year with trips to Truk, the Philippines, and I managed to get to Catalina Island for a Kelp forest dive on route to a rendezvous with Scalloped Hammerheads at Malpelo off Columbia. A few sharks were encountered on this trip (see photo below) and a trip report will follow once I come back down to earth (or is it return to the surface) after a most amazing dive trip. Anita, Nick, Stenny and Tom are slumming it in the Galapagos in August, Scuba Steve and Elaine liveaboarding around the Komodos Island (Indonesia) around the same time and Katherine, Mark and Stenny are in Truk in November. It’s an outrage - they should all be at work like the rest of us. Upcoming Dive Trips and Lionfish meetings: HMAS Brisbane - 17 August Wolf Rock/Rainbow beach proposed for 7/8th September Club Social - August 13 Seaview Hotel (not VMRB clubhouse) See you in the deep blue sea. 505 Europe Mystery Tour June 2013 EARLE ALEXANDER Once again this year SYC sailing member Earle Alexander decided to do a 505 Mystery Tour of Europe, using his International 505 class dinghy that he keeps with friends in Germany. His son Nick (ex 420 Australian Champion) sailed as crew in Lake Garda, Italy. After Lake Garda they travelled via Venice to Kiel on the Baltic Sea in preparation for Kiel Week. Kiel Week is the largest sailing regatta in the world with up to 1000 boats of different classes sailing on many different courses. Nick had to return home before Kiel Week so Earle sailed with one of the German 505 guys, Arne Lanatowitz. Kiel Week, four days of hard racing in cold strong wind was just great, with Earle and Arne finishing 15th in a fleet of 40 x 505s. Here are extracts of the emails and some of photos he sent home to his 505 friends in Australia. 18th June 2013 Nick (my son) and I have just finished sailing the 3 day Riva Del Garda regatta on Lake Garda. Although only 20 boats (usual 50) sailed this year, the lake turned on its usual big fan at midday at 10-18 knots - not as strong as last year. Mieke Schomaker and Holger Jess (Germany) won. A great fleet again with the first 8 boats having been in the top 10 of past world 505 championships. We finished 15th but still had lots of fun. Nick and I are off to Venice for a couple of days before flying to Hamburg, then Kiel.

Author Earle with son Nick in Venice start sailing again practising with Arne Lanatowitz. Arne and I will sail the 4 days of Kiel Week starting Thursday. The Olympic classes started Saturday and finish Wednesday. A WW2 UBoat that is in good condition at the Laboe memorial to sailors of all nations.

Tranquil lake in the morning with the local old folk fishing for tiddlers

The German sailing team has use of the indoor facility to store their boats fully rigged, makes going sailing easy.

3 boat trailer ready to travel back to Kiel 24th June 2013 Finished the Lake Garda regatta and went to Venice for a couple of days with Nick. One day walking around Venice was great but quite enough time. I am now in Schilksee north of Kiel staying with Martin and Andrea Goerge again, very close to the 1972 Olympic sailing facility. My boat was transported back to Schilksee by Stefan Kochlin and is now ready to

VMR, BRISBANE

1st July 2013 Just finished Kiel Week and as usual it put on the normal 15 to 28 knots of cold hard wind for 4 days and 11 races. A fleet of about 40 x 505s and it was like sailing a big nationals or worlds again. The German 505 sailors are really good. The top French, Danish and Swiss boats were also there. I sailed with one of the German guys who I sailed with last year, Arne Lanatowitz, and he was just a great crew and all mistakes were still fun. Only capsized once without a problem. My German boat set up by Holger Jess is just great. Everything works and changing gears is easy. Final result 15th and very happy with our performance. Upwind speed was as good as the best. Just the manoeuvres were slow compared with the top teams. Next year's Worlds are in Kiel and, if this regatta is an example, it will be run with the normal German efficiency on one of the best open sailing waters of the world. Cold in June however I have been told that August is much warmer. The area around the sailing complex is good with green fields, forests, great eating at cheap prices (especially fish). Golden Wedding Anniversary

Rock ‘n Roll Evening

GRAEME AND SHIRLEY WAHRY

27th July, 2013 Angie and Nino Aceto hosted this night to raise much needed funds for VMRB. Forty people attended, including the four members of the band “SPECIAL T”. Some of the attendees were from a Rock & Roll Club and some were followers of the Band. A small number of VMRB members attended. The music was great and supper was served, all for $10 per head which was great value. The bar was open and manned by Tom Begbie - many thanks, Tom. Lucky Peter Leech won the Lucky Door Prize, and was seen celebrating on the dance floor with wife Carol. The Raffle Prize, dinner for two, donated by Kedron Wavell RSL was won by Cheryl Rogerson.

and now.

Graeme and Shirley Wahry will be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 14th September. Graeme met Shirley Siggs on the shores of Cabbage Tree Creek in 1956 when Shirley was invited to participate in the Lady Skippers’ Race and Graeme was a member of the Sandgate Trainee Squadron.

A great deal of work went into the lighting effects for the night. This was overseen by Thomas Grice, and the hall looked fabulous, thanks Thomas. Angie and Nino put in a tremendous effort to host this evening and they are to be commended. Thanks to all who attended, I know we all enjoyed the live music from “SPECIAL T” who donated their time.

One thing led to another and they were married on 14th September, 1963 at St. Margaret’s Church in Sandgate. Their honeymoon was spent sailing around the Whitsundays for 3 weeks on a catamaran that Graeme had built.

Foxtrot Crew Dinner 28TH JUNE, 2013 Joe

This wasn’t your normal barbecue. For a start, Foxtrot Crew had set up some games around the room and we soon saw that Peter and Carol Leech had keen eyes as they threw the balls into the Bronco cups so accurately they scooped half the prizes. While many were testing their accuracy, we nibbled on nuts, pretzels and lolles, and followed that with roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potato, peas and cauliflower bake . Apple strudel and ice-cream finished off a very satisfactory meal. Linda took over the mike to conduct the Quickstep Quiz which resulted in many prizes being distributed to the talented – and perhaps some of the not-so-talented! - people present. Karen Traversari was deemed to be the most creative while most correct answers went to Billy Blogs, alias Karl Nast, who was pleased to be presented with a Beacon to Beacon book, donated by Thomas. The Gooseclub draw of $800 didn’t go to John Somerset - because he wasn’t there to collect the money when his name was drawn. Alistair Duffield won the Lucky Door Prize which was a voucher for the Coral Sea Restaurant at the Kedron Wavell Services Club in Chermside. Generous Thomas Grice donated the raffles. First prize was won by Joe McCoy who took home a chart and chart holder. Deidre Windham was pleased with the tool box (and Richard cornered the Merlot) which was 2nd prize, while Alistair proved he had a winning streak by winning 3rd prize.

Sierra Crew’s Dinner Christmas in July Approximately 63 people attended Sierra Crew “Christmas in July” dinner on Friday 26th July. As is the norm for Sierra Crew the meal was outstanding and our Clubhouse looked very festive with Christmas table cloths and decorations. The Egg Nog was enjoyed by those who were not the “Designated Drivers” and the three course meal was scrumptious. VMRAQ was represented by Harry Hubner and his wife Pam, while Energex was represented by Ron and Terry. Energex generously donated three hampers for us to raffle; thank you Ron and Terry. Annette New member, Martin Breslin will be disappointed he did not attend as his number in the Goose Club was called out so he missed out on $850. Sorry, Marty. It was great to welcome back Jan Young, who has not attended a Friday Night BBQ for a while as she has been attending to Doug, who I am pleased to advise is progressing well. Jan was the holder of the Lucky Door winning number; the prize being dinner for two donated by Kedron Wavell RSL. Congratulations, Jan. A second prize was drawn from tickets issued to those who had sent an RSVP to Sierra Crew to help with catering numbers and this prize was won by Linda Frankland. The first number drawn for the Energex hampers was Annette Sheppard, wife of President Neil. The second number was held by Pam Hubner and the third by Harry Hubner. Harry generously offered his prize back for a redraw and this time it was Bob Chapman who was the lucky winner. Congratulations to all our winners . Rae Hirn.
