VMRB Matters
Hello Members Wow it is hard to believe just how fast this year is going. Already it is February and Christmas seems a distance past. We had a very busy time over the Christmas / New Year period with a rescue completed almost every day. Fortunately things quietened down during January. Energex Sandgate 1 was damaged assisting a stricken vessel and this has put the vessel out of action for a couple of weeks as we sorted out the repairs. Fortunately Energex Sandgate 1 is back on the water and fully operational. We recently inducted 7 new crew members and we look forward to seeing these new faces around the Base and eventually assigned permanently to a crew. Most of our new crew members from the September induction have now been assigned to their respective crews. The mid-week crew is as active as ever with numerous jobs being completed. It was great to see some of the timber railings replaced on the main veranda of our Operations Centre. Last year we received funding from the Port of Brisbane to refurbish our Radio / Crew Room. The refurbishment is well progressed and we hope to have this project completed by mid-March. Although it may seem a long way off we need to consider the make-up of our Management Committee for the 2014/15 year. No doubt we will have at least a couple of spots to fill. So if you have a positive attitude, a desire to see the Club progress, and are willing to put in the hard yards to make a difference, then please contact me. Safe boating.

MONTHLY STATISTICS
As we update and change the recording methods of our activations, please accept that we will have all our activations and sea time updates finalised for the next edition of Boat Talk.
Crews’ News In mid-December four members of our mid-week crew downed tools to pick up a call. Coast Guard Manly had taken a call at approx. 09:45 from the owner of a vessel taking water to be towed to Doboy Creek, Manly were unable to help due to servicing of their 2 bigger boats. A call then went to the water police who in turn called us. Skippered by Ian McCartney, Energex Sandgate 1 and crew Noel Luxton, Ray Henery and Greg Henderson set off in a medium sea to locate ‘Ruby’ a wooden 43ft yacht and 25 tonnes anchored near Manly Harbour. The vessel had taken on a lot of water, flooded the engine and all navigational equip including radios. Once we located the yacht and saw the condition of it there was some doubt as to whether it was seaworthy enough to make the journey, the timbers had rot, patchy paint work, all manner of plastic containers draped around it and two tenders, one on board the other tied off to the yacht. After assessment we passed the tow rope and got underway, by this time the wind was up and the swell was building, we were making about 5.5kts. By the time we had turned and were on course for the Coffee Pots the wind was over 20 knots and the seas were now about 1.5mtrs. Once at the coffee pots we turned into the river, it was made a little easier with a following sea and the further up the river we got the more sheltered it was. We shortened up the tow once we reached Doboy Creek took the boat up the creek about 400mtrs then swung around and brought her on to her anchor position. We released the tow and headed for Cabbage Tree Creek. By this time the winds had got stronger and the seas bigger. It was a slow trip back. It was about 14:15 when Sandgate 1 was back up in the shed. (see photos on page 2) Bill Hirn, Duty Maser of Charlie Crew reported “Despite the excellent weather on our December Crew day there was not much happening on the bay. We did do some training on Energex Sandgate 1.” However, we do have photographic evidence of one disturbing event on the day. Nino getting in touch with his feminine side with his pink handbag! Woops, I think it was meant to be a cooler bag for his lunch, but we wont let that get in the way of a good story.…(see photo on page 2) 14.12.13 The summer solstice and what a fantastic day, calm, clear and fine. What a turn out for Foxtrot Crew, we were honoured to have the guidance of not one, not two ,not three but four, yes four coxswains, two current Duty Masters, two imminent Duty Masters and one Unit Training Officer through out the day. Foxtrot Duty Master, Thomas Grice put them all to work in their specialist areas. We were able to train on all three vessels at once with charting, navigating, rafting, local knowledge, vessel handling, manoeuvring and maintaining vessel positions and ship to ship crew transfers. This was a rare opportunity and each coxswain, such different individuals, with differing backgrounds and experience, learning and teaching methods, the crew milked them for their knowledge and experience they had to offer. We even had a large pod of dolphins join in and a very large yacht stating her right of way through one of our training activities! Of course we gave her the right of way she commanded! With Peter’s full boat training course also underway and great weather conditions it was busy, busy boat ramp and pontoon. It was also our Christmas Hamper day and all that sea air had us hewing in. 21.12.13 Delta crew conducted their morning training run to the South West Spit, Otter Rock and returned to base. At 16:45 we left the base on board Energex Sandgate 1 with a target at 9NM west of Tangalooma. This job came via Redcliffe Coast Guard. Delta Crew; R.A.Lind (Ross) Master (Skipper), L.Hillyard (Luke), G.Keough (Greg), J.Mathieson (James). Conditions at start : Day, Light Chop, Grey Sky. 45 Minutes later in search zone (17:30 approx.), found target at 1800 and started tow at 27dregess 09' 46" South, 153 degrees 19' 60" East approx. Conditions still light but night closing in, last light was 18:35 approx. 20:30 Finish Tow in the dark Into Schulz Canal, with James as Navigator in the night the speed of the tow was 8—10 knots, we arrived back at Base At 2100. James makes these special notes:1. Please Learn to read your GPS, It cost 30 minutes in time 2. Your can see The Leads orange light at 3NM out and Balls Hills Radio Tower at the same distance. 3. Moreton Bay is very different at night to day. 28.12.13

VMRB Crews News Continued... After a lovely morning in which Energex Sandgate 1 went out for a crew training run to allow some of the crew members present to sign off task book requirements. November crew then enjoyed a hearty lunch then returned the vessel to the shed for a refuel which allowed for some crew members to complete practical refuelling of our vessel. The rest of the afternoon was taken up with training and workshopping on different theory subjects. 22.12.13 The Christmas New Year holiday period provided rather pleasing boating weather if not just a little too hot at times. Over t his holiday time our crew members are asked to give even more of their family time when they put their hands up to provide full crews at our base to attend callouts for assistance from boaties in need. We are very proud to advise Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day, Australia Day and the allocated public holidays were all fully crewed. These particular days are not set in our Crew Roster, we rely completely on our members to volunteer additional time. We acknowledge this is a very special, spi ritual and family time for many and to give of that time is certainly recognised. Thank You All. Your commitment to Saving Lives at Sea is commendable. Our Christmas Day crew members were well catered for as you can see some of the crew inside the front cover! A glorious morning at the creek. Quiet on the radio for such good boating weather. Foxtrot preparation and training activities were carried out by all crew members this included thorough vessel inspections and checklists. All good to go. Our first exercise involved creating waypoints plotted by Anthony for two different routes to a coordinate east of Mud Island. The courses were strategised to have both Energex Sandgate 1 and Sandgate Rescue 2 arrive at the same time at set speed rates with different departure times. This activity was carried out successfully and proved most effective. Second time out was to use the opportunity of the SCYC Surf to City Race to go about seeking and identifying some of the yachts coming across the bay on the shorter course of the race. Black Jack the maxi Sydney to Hobart contender, competing in the long course, had rounded Cape Moreton and was headed down to the finish line just outside the One Mile Marker aka Fisheries Beacon. Aboard Energex Sandgate 1 it was easy to spot her. With Thomas at the helm we were able side up to get a good look. Wow, what a thrill for us , a sleek vessel and a slick crew. Cruising at just over 20 knots was ‘smooth sailing’ for her compared to the ‘Big Race’. (see front cover and back page) On return to base we were called to a 9m vessel at Shark Spit that had lost electrics and required towing back to Cabbage Tree Creek. It was not until after 20.20 this Duty Crew day ended with a real sense of achievement for all Foxtrot crew members. 18.1.14 Energex Sandgate 1 made two runs on Delta Crews fist rostered duty day of 2014. In the morning we headed to Colmslie boat ramp then to West End boat ramp to chat to boaties about Logging On and Logging Off and handing out our Waterside Assist Membership forms. On returning to base we used our training skills to carry out man overboard drills. The water was like gl ass on the bay this morning. In the afternoon we met our new crew member on Energex Sandgate 1 (see photo page 2). While we trained in vessel handling in rough seas (that’s our bay for you), we were called to tow a 4.8 metre half cabin cruiser from Fisheries beacon to our base in Cabbage Tree Creek. VMRB Christmas Party 2013 This year we had a better attendance at our Annual Christmas Party. 30 adults and 18 children enjoyed the day. After a wet week, Sunday 1st December was a fine day although very windy at the Base. The adults enjoyed a Sausage Sizzle expertly cooked by Noel Luxton, while the children had cheerios in cups with lots of other goodies. In the absence of the Snow Cone and Fairy Floss machines our Daughter Tracey bought her Popcorn Maker and Bubble Blowing Machines down which were greatly appreciated. Santa arrived aboard “Energex Sandgate 1” much to the delight of the little ones. He had a red sack full of goodies for all the Children. Once again special thanks must go to Graham Makin for his time to supervise the children while they enjoyed riding in his battery operated car and three wheel motorised bike. The younger ones were a bit apprehensive at first, but the older boys all seemed to have lead in their boots. We would also like to thank Nino and Angie Aceto, Noel and Julie Luxton, David and Jenny Davis and our Daughters Tracey and Linda and friend Sheryl for their help on the day, including the setting up and cleaning up. Also Ray Henery who helped with getting the chairs downstairs. Bill and I would like to wish all members a Healthy and Happy 2014. Rae Hirn

Training News UTC: DEAN STEINBACK The handover with Peter has been completed and training courses will commence at the beginning of February. The list of courses offered is located in the training folder on the chart table. Please remember that the dates and times of these courses are subject to change and you should check the folder regularly for changes. Crew members are again reminded to complete the modules in the order they appear on the training audit sheets (the only exception is first aid and MROCP). Check the list in the front of the training folder for those requiring first aid renewals and CPR refreshers. Peter Leech will be continuing on as my assistant for most of the training and in addition, several of the Duty Masters have offered to assist me with various parts of the planned training. It is extremely beneficial for me to make use of these people because of the fact that we can learn different ways from differing approaches and styles to training. To begin, the training for the first half of the year will be solely focused on those who are working toward their second stripe (most of whom I have already spoken to!). The main reason for this is; the training package we currently operate under will be superseded by a new package as of July 1 st this year and, changes to the coxswain level subjects are possible. The units on offer will be in the form of Tuesday night sessions with the exam scheduled for four to six weeks later on a Saturday morning (again, check folder for any changes). This will leave you with sufficient amount of time to complete the task book and assignment. Training steps still require you to; Complete the theory first; Then complete the task book second (You must leave 3 weeks between tasks that require 2 or more completions); Complete the assignment third; Sit the exam fourth and; undertake the practical assessment last. Duty masters then need to advise me via email that the practical assessment has been successfully completed. Theory, Task book, Assignment, Exam, Prac. After that, I can process the module (ensure everything has been done) and have a certificate issued. To our new crew members, just a friendly reminder that you are required to complete the Elements of Shipboard Safety course within six months of joining. There is a course scheduled for the beginning of March and attendance at both days is required. Happy Boating Dean Steinback UTC VMR Brisbane utc@vmrbrisbane.com.au> This month’s question What is the name of Part B of the IRPCS and, what are the three sections which fall under it?

Sandgate Yacht Club Some of our own Sandgate Yacht Club members took part in The Surf to City race on 18th January. Sandgate Cruising Yacht Club hosted the event in association with Southport Yacht Club. This race is unique in that it is the only Australian race that includes an offshore fleet and an inshore fleet that start and end at the same points. The 2014 race attracted 85 yachts from the famous Black Jack to 7metre trailer sailors. For more information go to: http://www.surf2city.com.au VMRB were able to assist by providing race ‘skeds’ via vhf radio, GPS logging of yachts and radio monitoring. VMRB have provided this assistance for many years as some recognition of the Sandgate Yacht Club, part of the original club formed at this site. This year Glenn Philip did the job with the assistance of Col Nielson and others. It is a very long day into the night and through until early hours of the morning, so thank you Glenn and everyone who assisted. As the Transport Queensland Load Restraint Guide notes, (http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ Safety/Vehicle-standards-and-modifications/ Loads-and-towing/Load-restraint.aspx), a safety chain should be used in addition to the wire rope from the trailer’s winch to the bow of the boat and the boat should have a strap over the stern, attaching it to the trailer. If the boat is fitted with an outboard motor and its mounting to the stern is not designed to withstand bumps and other shocks encountered in road transport, it may be necessary to separately restrain the motor or remove it during transport. The load within your boat must also be covered and tied down.
Time Zone - 1000
Store like with like. Eg. secure fishing rods together and tie at both ends, buckets, crab pots and other gear also to be secured. The load should then be covered using mesh or tarpaulin and tied down. Further information about load security, long and projecting loads and the safe use of vehicle trays is available at http:// www.tmr.qld.gov.au Thanks Ross Lind for the information.

And what did you do over Christmas 2013? Kerry Kyle-Little of VMRB’s Papa Crew can say something few of us can top: she crewed in the 2013 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race. Kerry is a keen sailor and it was her experience in crewing on an entry in the 2007/08 Round the World Clipper race that saw her application to crew on the British 68 footer CV10 accepted. She had joined the Clipper Race then in Fremantle and sailed to Qingdao in the north of China. For the first time, the Sydney-Hobart was included as part of the current Round the World Clipper race so twelve 70-footers sailed with the regular fleet with Kerry’s CV10 and an identical boat, CV5. As Chairman of Clipper Ventures and founder of the Clipper Round the World Race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was setting up a new training and events base in Sydney. (Sir Robin was the first person to perform a singlehanded non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 1968.) The 74-year-old even joined Kerry’s crew as navigator. There were 18 crew on each of the 68-footers: CV10’s included Jim Dobie as skipper, a mate, their famous navigator and Roger McMillan, a journalist from Australian Sailing magazine, as well as 6 women. Training for the 2013 Rolex Sydney-Hobart, the 69th Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, started in earnest ten days before the race start so Kerry drove to Sydney with all her racing paraphernalia. It was an exciting beginning because the boat started with a completely new wardrobe of sails which needed their numbers affixed: GBR9359T. This was quite an event in a nearby park, as the sails were so huge there was no area big enough to spread them out completely to make sure they were stuck on straight (and in the right order and on both sides!) (During the race, it was exhilarating to use those unusual asymmetrical spinnakers – not uncommon now but different for the Clipper 68s so they had to have a bow sprit added to accommodate them.) Rushcutters Bay was the base for training and involved all the usual things, such as lifeboat drills, swimming fully clothed with addition of “foulies”, and survival at sea, endless tacking and gybing practice, man overboard drills (under white sails and under kite), with life-sized dummy and which include sending a crew member into the water on a halyard for the retrievals, yacht maintenance, victualing for 18 people for 7 days and the dreaded deep clean. [Kerry noted that the dummy (see photo attached) is actually labeled ‘Ruth Lee’ but “we always call our MOBs ‘Bob’ - even when they are only fenders – as they bob around while we attempt to retrieve them.”] They were joined in training by four additional reporters and photographers who were preparing to do the race on some of the “70s” and were required to do training in order to participate. It was exciting seeing so many well-known boats together. Kerry had sailed on some, delivering them back to their home ports, but it was still an eye-catching time. Getting to know everyone also meant developing a team spirit and it took quite a while for everyone to automatically go where they were needed at any particular time. There were few people who were assigned just one role so almost everyone was able to adapt to the many needs. Fortunately it all came together on Boxing Day and CV10 got away brilliantly in the hectic start, beating all the other Clippers out.

Kerry Kyle-Little and Sir Robert Knox-Johnston BOAT TALK
VMR, BRISBANE
The crew was split into two watches, with each watch on deck for four hours at a time, but at times “all hands” being required even if “off watch”. The routine was eight people on watch for four hours. Keeping the crew fed was one of the needs, and 2 people were rostered on to prepare each meal. It happened that sometimes people had to be taken off watch, were catching up on much-needed sleep or suffering seasickness, so one person would be left to conjure up something from the stocks of pasta and rice, tinned and other dried food. Although there was a tiny fridge on board, it was only used to store cheese, butter and long-life milk after opening – mainly to stop them being thrown around and spilt. There wasn’t much room for anything else! For the first two days the going was fairly smooth and it wasn’t until the third day that CV10 struck 40 knot winds, followed by a “lull before the storm” as they entered Bass Strait. The easy ride across the Strait was short-lived as the predicted (cold++) westerly front arrived and wind speeds in the 50+knot range were seen which, together with the large waves, made the going interesting. Once entering Bass Strait, Kerry found it is a deceptively long way down the Tasmanian Coast. By the time they were almost becalmed in the Derwent River, there was a great wish they could turn on the engine and hurry up the process! In fact CV10 did very well and was the second Clipper into Constitution Dock, arriving at 9.15 am on 30 th December so taking 3 days, 20 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds to be the 37th boat across the line. CV5 came in 53rd over the line. CV10 came first on handicap in the Clipper class so the crew members were rightly pleased with themselves. 84 boats finished the race with 10 yachts, including one Clipper, retiring from the event. There was a real buzz as boats came in and crews dispersed. Some left for home immediately while others prepared for the return trip home, the ‘delivery’. Two of the Round the World Clippers had to be lifted out and undergo repairs and CV5 had occasioned rig damage. In the end, CV10 basically escorted CV5 home. The day before they left, slightly-built Kerry had trouble holding on around the dock. No wonder: wind gusts of 115 knots were recorded! Actually the trip back to Sydney was a lot rougher than the voyage south, with winds up to 60 knots on one day. This was the only night it was decided to forego dinner as it was so rough but Kerry managed to produce basic noodles to sustain everyone. The two 68-footers arrived back in Sydney around 4 am on Tuesday, 7 th January. The crews still had to tidy up the vessel and while Kerry was securing the sail cover around the boom, she broke her left arm and ended up in hospital not much later. However, the break hasn’t dimmed Kerry’s enthusiasm for the event, one which she had secretly thought she’d love to do but never have the chance. It just shows Christmas presents come in all different guises! See also http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/gallery/58/841 Thank You Deidre and Kerry for this story.

Alpha Crew Aussie Beach Party
Friday, 31st January
It was really good to see the numbers roll up for this first BBQ of 2014. Members of Alpha Crew were proud to set a couple of extra tables. The Aussie Beach theme made it easy for guests to dress up and still stay cool on the evening. I didn’t see any bikinis, we did see lots of Hawaiian shirts, pretty summer dresses and bright shorts. The music was also summery, beachy and lively and added to the light, casual atmosphere. Alpha crew presented us with a deliciously different array of salads at this BBQ. (Alpha crew will you share the recipes?) The barbecued meat was perfect, just like your typical Aussie Beach Party…(without the sand in your food). Even the deserts were home made and delicious. This night provided opportunity for Allan Eustace to be presented with the Club Man of the Year trophy announced at the AGM in September. Bob Chapman presented the trophy recognising Allan as a club man who will do for our club what ever he can and even more when called upon. Allan, as members of VMRB we appreciate all you do. Two crew members received their First Stripe, our UTC Dean Steinbeck, presented the epaulettes to Brad White of Tango Crew and Linda Frankland from Foxtrot. Joe and Jan McCoy donated a lucky number board loaded with ‘Scratchy’ tickets, this was won by Peter Van Sloten. Joe and Jan’s daughter also donated a $50 voucher for hairstyling at her Sandgate salon Sarhair, Sandy Reid (wife of Peter, now conducting Boat Licensing sessions from our Squadron base). The lucky door prize of a dinner for two at Geebung Zillmere RSL was won by Paul Hollingdale. This prize and a set of fragrant drawer liners were donated by Tony and Elizabeth Lloyd. First prize of a bottle of Grants Scotch Whiskey was won by Polly Henderson. Glenn Philip won second prize of a bottle of Bubbles and set of Champagne glasses. The Goose Club number was called, Grahame Baker was the owner of the number, unfortunately Mr Baker was not present. The Goose Club prize of $1100 is still up for grabs. Remember you must be at the BBQ/Dinner to win! How Gorgeous is Beach Baller Thomas Clark?!
