Axis '09 newsletter (issue 3)

agpur saw its lowest dip in temperature yet, the cold conspired with event nightmares against event managers and widened the gap between a good night's sleep and the event managers. With gravely open eyes, the over worked organisers tried desperately to start their respective events on the times mentioned in the printed schedule. As the warmth of the rising sun hit the cold grounds of the campus, people dashed between events. Wallstreet and Mo-fun continued to keep the flooding auditorium breathing fast. Technodox, the technical paper presentation event lived up to all its expectations and once again, proved to be the stalwart of AXIS. It received a great amount of outstation response. Despite light graffiti visions which kept everyone up last night, the students were attentively enthusiastic for the aero-modelling and hacking workshops that successfully concluded today. 'Who's the boss?' gave a reason to participants to wake up on time, occupying a major segment of the road opposite to the new improved library. The management event challenged the managerial acumen of the participants . Sudoku and informals were actively participated in, as the former ran out of questions within an hour and the latter had to disappoint a few participants due to lack of time. While the organisers required help finding steady attention at the "help-desks", an extremely busy Utsav found a chair for himself at the SAC help-desk. It was hard to locate him behind the tall stacks of yesterday's newsletter copies . Small and large groups of chattering people creatively discovered places to hangout. People were seen consuming fluorescent refreshments with interestingly varying nomenclature which they found at the experimental cocktail stall. The day wrapped up with the same exuding energy and excitement with which it triggered off.

Cy p her RevENGG and Crypto-Crux, the two big events of Cypher saw an epic end, as the finalists clashed against each other in a fierce Coding battle. The finals happened in the well-equipped labs of the Electronics and CompSci Dept., with close to 20 finalists. The finalists were each given away a few goodies that made their efforts quite fruitful even if it might not have been too sincere on their parts. The Sun Microsystems hero of the college, Arindam Paul, seemed quite happy with himself at the end of the three hour brain exercise.

Technodox With the participation of 28 teams, the event Technodox witnessed a ground success (the acknowledgement being on the fact that the success was a pleasant surprise as compared to the other events). The event saw foreign participation as well. The judges for the first slot Dr. Bhurchandi, HOD, Ramtek Engineering, Dr. P.A. Pokle, HOD, Raisoni Engineering College and Dr. R. Keskar, Assistant Prof., VNIT, Nagpur, served witty questions on the plates of the participating teams. Special recognition went to the second year team of our college, Tanay Baldua and Divya Chopra managed to impress the tough-skinned judges. Owing to the excellent response, the event was divided into 3 slots . But sadly the comfy seats and the air-conditioned seminar hall did manage to make some of the back-benchers snore.

Archi Undeterred by the postponement of 'Produk', the architecture department attempts to identify itself with the institute, but still shrieking, "We are different!" They do not mind promoting their events with the help of Rohan Surve (accidentally engi rightfully archil. The events of the department were innovative and a break away from the complexities of the other events of AXIS . There was Itoons with an extremely hilarious theme, 'bunty, bubli and swine flu', and also an interesting workshop on landscape painting which gave people a chance to wander away into the background if they ever got bored. They also had events involving photography and video shooting which gave boys a pretext to click a few unsuspecting girls. One event was based on an idea copied from news deprived newspapers,' give a caption!' which had a very animated picture of Utsav and his beloved microphone. On the whole, the event was a success, which gave a different dimension to AXIS. light graffiti workshop was looked forward to as it was a special event this AXIS. Hosted by Club Capture, photography club of VNIT, Vysakh was eyed with suspicion with his sanity being questioned. The hosts explained how still images could be made with the help of just a few LED's and a camera with adjustable shutter speed. A clash-of-the-titans ensued as Chinki demanded Abhik turn on the lights because without the blue lights, mo-fun is just no-fun. We could see a frustrated Chinki groping his way around in the dark mofun arena, with Abhik pacifying him by repeatedly referring to the blue lights as diwali lights. The participants were given a chance to experiment and most of VNIT at last got to see what the workshop was all about (if you haven't already seen them on Vyshakh's profile on fb) .

Zeta is back II Axis is almost over and life is getting back to normal in 'WE'NIT . After working really hard for AXIS we let our minds wander about. It was early morning, and we just about to go to bed when we were struck by an interesting idea, the details of which we've mentioned below. So read on ... Okay, now imagine our Chor committee member Boru becoming the Training and Placement (T.P) secretary of 'We'NIT next year. The reasons for this idea entering our fertile imagination areHe virtually owns the company, TopiKaprikorn, and finding a job for his batch mates won't be too hard . HE OWNS A COMPANY!! The jobs that can be offered to people from various departments ... Architecture people get the decoration and housekeeping . They are especially busy on occasions like Diwali and Christmas where they have to do some interior designing, like putting up paper stars, confetti, setting up the pine tree, etc etc. The chemical engineers will be able to show off their vast knowledge of solutions and cleaning agents (OCT) when they have to clean the toilets and scrub the tiles. Civil engineers will be incharge of gardening, given their expertise in soil and hydrology. They also have a penchant for keeping an eye out for slackers since they are skilled in the technique of surveying. Comp sci engineers are recruited as clerks given their ability to always go by the book. A few qualified ones are also selected to give seminars on computer hygiene. The electrical guys can take care of all the CFL's, fans and AC's that call for help. Additional wiring work earns you a bonus (partiality). Lift maintenance duty is given only to the cream . (Job requirement is the thorough and in depth understanding of the science of pushing a button). The electronics people get the fumigation and pest control jobs due to their natural affinity for smoke. They also double up as cheerleaders during the company picnic . Mechanical guys have a lot of potential here. Keeping in mind their knowledge of machines, they are allotted basement parking duties. They literally have to start from the bottom to get to the top. The metallurgists get to show their skills in handling metal as they are given the duties of stapling and washing the cutlery on the canteen. The mining people get to dig deep into the lives of certain stubborn customers as they are the recovery agents for the firm.

Wallstreet Wallstreet, the major attraction of AXIS did it again. Having the highest number of participants, the number of registrations in the event crossed 500 inspite of challenges like recession, economic slowdown and swine flu. In the regular sessions, prizes were given away, two each for the highest winners and the highest losers in each session. Wallstreet event coordinators arranged for an on the spot quiz on the topic of share markets. 10-15 simple questions were asked and freebies such as Netbeam cds, wristband and a little money too were given as prizes. Today, along with the rest of the events, Wallstreet draws to a close with a final session from 9 to noon.

MoFun

AXIS Adda

It all began yesterday, though it's not such a long time ago, if you have been staring at a bright screen in a dimly lit room for the past 20 hours, you would find yourself in a state that the event organizers of MOFUN find themselves right now. They are tired and are reaching incoherent levels where they say stuff like 'MOFUN is less fun' (I promised Hans I would not reveal his name). The forever eager participants played round after round till the early watches of the morning, nothing seemed to be able to distract these avid gamers, not the traders of WALSTREET, the strange intermittent videos with the updates, the light graffiti or exhaustion itself. The obsession seems to have bitten the girls of VNIT, in an unprecedented move there was a girls exclusive round of NFS. There was also an unprecedented amount of attention from Chinki and Abin. There were at least 20 girls who decided they had the sand to test their skills. With the 30 clans for CS, 80 participants for FIFA and over a 100 for NFS, the organizers had more than their hands full. When asked if they would trade the time they spent playing the game against each other for some well deserved sleep, Gaurav laughs and Ajay replies 'There's only one reason why we are here.'

Hacking Workshop

• Just cause we told you we were of more help than the help desk people, we dint think you would actually put us there. Every second year seen roaming around was forced to sit on the help(??) desk • The Mining Department was celebrating the concept of family. The event was obviously organized by the mining department, with participation from the mining department and the judge *surprise surprise* from the mining department! • Thinking of new ways of venting your frustration??? Tryout Gaurav Arora's newly discovered stress buster- clenching the carefully nurtured grass of the meta lawn and flinging it at every random axis-ite. • The so called "guitar physics workshop" was just an excuse to perform, wasn't it. .. ? • Afnan seemed to be taking full advantage of his core status, trying out every form and colour of refreshments available in the stand. • Aneesh was found loking for some Xs Axis tshirt for some Xclusive daysci gal. • Inu beta aka Avasthi aka Mani finally hit puberty. Yesterday the newly born man spoke to Central India's largest cultural festival for a whole 5 minutes. One small step for Mani, one giant leap for Mani-kind. • The ladder in the audi wishes Saurabh Sathe a very happy birthday.

The thought of attending an 8 hour lecture would scare anyone, but surely not the 1 1 1 participants of the ethical hacking workshop. All of them braved the entire lecture of about 16 hours, spread over two days. One of the reasons being the quality of the workshop being presented by 'Emagineers'. There was some technical glitch in the first half, that made the presenters play for a break, but the over enthusiastic crowd didn't appreciate it .The interactive session progressed further as the students deciphered the condemned art and were whirled into the ethereal knowledge of the able lecturers. On asking the participants about the day's lecture, the participants gave a pretty productive and positive feedback informing us about the advanced hacking techniques. One amongst the promising certified hackers, feared to be christened as a sycophant, as she endlessly praised the event.

Aeromodelling Workshop Trusting the able pilot Rajesh Joshi, a flock of about hundred and fifty students boarded the flight school which proved to be a fulfilling experience. Icarus distinguished itself from the other four-walled events and observed a practical workshop after the prolific morning lecture. Instead of focusing on the Physics behind aero-modelling, the practical aspect of aeronautics was discussed. The knowledgeable Mr. Joshi was very audience friendly and made sure without fail that everyone remained hooked on to the lecture. After the evening workshop session, everybody came out with a smile on their faces holding on to their aero-models tight (well, we did try to snatch one and run ... ) One of the passengers in the flight, was unperturbed as we quizzed her with her fundamentals, but all went in vain . She signed off thanking the AXIS '09 team for organizing the fascinating workshop.

• The WTB people had taken to the streets and were seen happily dancing to blaring music being played while the rounds were going on. Now that's the way to mix work and play. • Diwali came late for Chinki, so claims Abhik referring to the blue 'diwali' haona lights hung all around the mo-fun arena. • VNIT celebrates the return of Vishnu Kaimal for his recovery from the debilitating effects of sunstroke.

QPC Quiz sessions have always been held informally in rooms that never seem to fit the crowds. It isn't about winning; it's all about the experience. At least that's how it's done over here. The AXIS quiz was no different, with first years and final years alike crowding the quizzing adda, EN 0/1 . The tech quiz at AXIS'09 was brilliant and made the crowds ecstatic. After a brisk elimination round, the finalists settled down for 5 rounds of high voltage quizzing which involved some astute and thought provoking questions . The organizers had something in store for the crowd too; there was an informal quiz for everyone present and freebies were given away. The rounds that followed were innovative with a few firsts. Amidst witty repartee and shouts by a certain 2nd year for free tees, the event had a pretty serious note to it, some even swear seeing a haze over the room due to a few intellects suffering from cerebral overheating.

WTB

After a strong show by the participants on the 1st day, the 2nd day of WTB was eagerly awaited. After a brilliant elimination session, which saw around 250 boys and girls attend, all thanks to one Mr Sankalp (size does matter), the event organizers were caught up in ironing out the creases of the next round. They outstayed their welcome in the compsci dept and got themselves locked in. if it weren't for the hapless volunteers who seemed to be flummoxed by their sudden disappearance, we fear they might have had to stay the night. The 2nd round saw the organizers literally sweating it out as they sat on the footpath in the blazing sun conducting 'car-nama'. Music was blaring loudly and the volunteers and participants both seemed to have a blast. From what we've heard, the 'car-nama' round was one of the most intriguing and innovative round to be played at WTB, which reflects the hard work put in by the event organizers. Truly, 'car-name' shall go down the memory lane. The selected teams for the 3rd round, ie the strategy planning round were given products and they With intricate mechanisms, this event definitely required you to be had to prepare the strategy to market it. Hence, a very grueling day of WTB ended, leaving the technically 'aware'!! *not meant for the faint at heart* this event was participants exhausted, and begging for more. organized by the Robotics Team and was held for the first time rather successfully. With entries from Chennai and Amravati, this event definitely drew interest from lot students . The robots for a change were not manually operated but worked with the help of micro A fun event, which also was a challenge to the azure engineering and mechanised minds, eclectic controllers and IR and LED sensors (and I promised not to make it look involved programmed cars which ran on tracks and were powered by the tracks themselves. The event too technical!) . The aim was (obviously) to finish the course as fast as was more of a turtle race with bots moving at crawling speeds. There was an exception though with one hare breaking all speed limits completing the track in a whopping 22 seconds .The prize was very possible. The team from Chennai gave the event an early start by coming in enticing bait for budding robo-ticks, 25K. The contests somewhat reminded people of pet shows and showing off their contraption and finishing off with a track time except little cars had to perform tricks usually done by trained hamsters . Nevertheless, the event was full of fun and it was very interesting to watch. of 22 seconds leaving the organizers quite literally gaping!!!

Autobot

Eclectic

Almost all of the robots cleared most of the hurdles, though perfection was hard to come by. But all the teams have to be given all possible credit on the sheer awesomeness of their contraptions!!
