S w a h i l i Architectural Style Lamu’s unique architectural style, known as Swahili Architecture, dates back to the 18th Century. The original building types were exclusive to an area called Mkomani, the northern, oldest part of Lamu island where the wealthy merchant and noble Arab families first settled. The style can be best identified with the richly ornamented galleries facing northwards toward Mecca. External walls are thick with small windows and high ceilings to minimalize interior heating and maximize privacy. The style has been inspired by the neighboring Indian Ocean which provided materials such as drift wood and stone for the built environment.
