What to take away from this Presentation What is Steel Why is it so recyclable

How do we recycle Steel The process of Steel Recycling

How we use Steel in the Built Environment Applying Steel within Design

W h a t is Steel?

Steel is a gray or bluish-gray color metal. It is an alloy of iron and less than 2% carbon. It is: - Strong - Weldable - Ductile - Durable Steel is used extensively as a structural and fabricating material.

“

88% of all steel is recyclable

So Why Is It So Recyclable?

Steel is the most recycled material on the planet, more than all other materials combined becasue of its metallic properties. They allow steel to be easily separated and changed into the elements desired.

How do we Recycle S te e l ?

“Even while every two out of three tons of new steel is produced from old steel, it is still necessary to continue to use some quantities of virgin materials.

So ... How is steel sourced? And how do we recycle it ? How is recycled steel tranformed back?

The Formation of Steel

Extraction Iron Ore: A rock or mineral from which iron can be profitably extraced. Iron ore is mined from the ground and then processed into course-grain clumps. Coal: a combustible black or brownish-black rock Coal is mined in two methods - Surface or Underground Mining.

Manufacturing To best explain and understand the manufacturing process, we want to present to you a Youtube video! That’s right -

Usage Steel Products have a multitude of uses in our daily lives. Some as fundamental as being the reinforcing bars and mesh in reinforced concrete in buildings. Steel reinvented the spaces we occupy as it became the primary framework for skyscrapers. Other uses of steel: Cutlery Rulers Surgical instruments Watches Guns Rail passenger vehicles Tablets Trash Cans Intermodal containers

Magnetic cores Automobiles Trains Ships. Outdoor sculptures Highliner train cars Railroad tracks Structural steel in bridges Wires

End of Life

65 million tonnes recycled anually. 88% recovery rate.

BUT ...

It’s Complicated.

This is the life story of Steel

How we use Recycled Steel in the B u i l t Environment

Steel as the Structure

Arcelor Mittal Orbit Designed in 2012 by sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond. Located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. 60% of the structure is made from recycled steel.

Steel within the Frame Work

The Hearst Tower Designed by architect, Norman Foster and Partners. New York City. Completed in 2006, Gold Rating under LEED. Used 85% Recycled Steel for Frame work. In construction, the building used 20% less steel than other conventional framed structures. Non- conventional frame structure because of its diamond frame work instead of square frame work. Uses 25% less energy than other office buildings.

Steel within the Space

The Home Cafe Designed by Architect, Penda, the Home Cafe is Beijing, China. Project Year, 2014. The modular structure uses repurposed steel bars. Based on a grid system, the frame work is easily reconfigurated.
