Savannah Food Co-Op Process Book

process book the co-op and more studio II vivian mogwanja

This beginning stage of our design process was all about researching the client, the site and building and the various components that may further inform us when creating the Savannah Food Co-Op.

phase I

client analysis When first approaching this project,I began by studying the client, the Savannah Food Co-Op, a group of mothers that together, created a place they could get local, organic foods in their community. The design problem was how to expand their small space into a more of community central, multi purpose space.

The allocated site chosen for the Savannah Food Co- Op was previously the Kehoe Ironworks Property that’s oldest portion dates back to 1873. The site can be accessed from Broughton Street (the south side) and has parking space available within the property on the north side. Natural light exposure is only available on the south or north side of the allocated site building space.

site analysis

building analysis

This building is a rectangular shape, with the narrower side as the west and east facing sides that have no openings. The site is historic therefore cannot have exterior modification done to it. The beautiful brick material that makes up the old Kehoe property is authentic Savannah brick with old wooden joist supports that can be incorporated in the design.

precedent studies

Researching the precedents of Community, Co-Op design and Retail design informed my approach to the design process. Additionally, a focused study on local stores such as the Savannah Bee Company and major retail store, Urban Outfitters allowed us to walk through design spaces and pull from their conceptual layout.

This concept idea began as an investigation into the root of the Savannah Co-Op. As the Savannah Co-Op is our client, it was pivotal that the concept reflect the principles that the Co-Op was founded on. The small group of mothers that began the Co-Op summarize this as their objectives: Our Mission To sell organic and all natural items at a fair price to our members To support local and regional farmers and artisans To be a center of community activity and education To practice environmental and community responsibility To reflect our unique and diverse community Each of these goals feeds back into the community, encouraging and growing the local society around them. They promoted above all a sense of togetherness and assemblage. Therefore the Co-Op design must reflect these same values and encourage the users within the design to interact in this united way. Hence the concept of Symphony. The word ‘Symphony’ has a French root meaning of acting together. However in English, it has begun to be used to describe when different pieces/people come together to create something whole – separate pieces create a unified greater element. This idea is necessary in this project to unify all the different activities and area spaces that the Co-Op requires into one united whole. The concept will feed pivotally into the design process. Additionally, Symphony often means an orchestra or any sort of musical ensemble. This element of beauty would encourage the design to have tempo and beat; as if moving through the space would create a rhythm. The idea of a Symphony allows the space to have drama and individuality as the spaces require.

concept

These final images that I thought captured the essence of the concept “symphony depicted different aspects of the conceptual idea. The first image is a graphic that shows the playful, musical side of the concept. The middle image is an interior space which created a colorful and symmetrical space where a sense of community can be created. The last is an image of reflection that shows that even nature cannot stand alone.

concept model

phase II

In this phase, we began the design process. This phase is the initial ideas and relationships exploration where I looked at the adjacencies of different programs, the hierarchy and how much space one program may need versus another. In this phase, an initial floor plan schematic is started and then later improved on.

adjacency diagrams

bubble diagrams Bubble diagramming allowed me to develop further into my adjacency but in exploring the space. Bubble diagrams also help realize the size of programs and which programs may use the same space for their programming. Additionally, the inclusion of a mezzanine began to take form and its relationship to the first floor space began to be explored.

In my initial floor plans and schematic stage, I want to explore designating spaces and programs with materiality. Additionally, I began exploring the idea of separating different programs that were in an open floor plan space with a shell-like form. This can be seen developing in the floor plans as well as sections and elevations.

initial floorplans, section & elevations

initial perspectives

My initial perspectives show some of my beginning ideas about how to separate spaces using a shell structure that would relate directly to my conceptual image of a shell. Additionally, the idea of glass separation for my mezzanine to keep a direct relationship between the users occupying the lower level and those on the upper level. I had also began thinking about playing with heights and levels within the lower level space.

phase III

In this phase is when the ideas, design and space planning came together to create the final space. Phase III features quick sketches, ideas and problem solving that were part of the creation process. Additionally, red lined construction documents with the professors input and finally the complete construction documents.

The sections began to show more of the relationship between the upstairs mezzanine and the lower open floor. Furthermore the mezzanine provided a ceiling level for the more functional programs such as restrooms, storage and mechanical rooms.

The kiosk detail was important to focus on as the kiosk had three different programs; it acted as the cashier for the Savannah Food Co-Op, the Info Desk for new and inquiring users as well as a information center were users can use computers to research/work within the space.

phase IV

The final stage of the design was simply about production and presentation. Once the creation was over and the design was established in Phase III, I wanted to present it as creatively as well as legible and understandable. Therefore, I created a model that could better explain the space. Additionally, rendering the floor plans, chosen elevations and perspectives depicted the materiality, light and color. My final board shows how I compiled this project for presentation.

This was the stage were I had to create 2D forms that would come together to create a 3D object. Some of the Auto-cad shapes are on the left and they shaped into the laser cut outs on the right.

plotting on the laser cutter

Model building was all about patience and precision. The pieces fitted together to create the built in forms and the more movable, temporary furniture was etched onto the floor base.

model building

final floor p l a n model and renderings

f i n a l renderings

In my final renderings I wanted to show the key programs that the Savannah Food Co-Op uses as well as spaces within the design that make the Co-Op an attractive place for the users to occupy. My renderings depict the comfortable and positive space that the Savannah Co-Op would become.

final boards

My final presentation board combines specific components of the ideas that are explored in this process book in more detail. I wanted to show the relationship of the site and client with the concept and how this progressed and influenced the overall design. Some material choices are shown to contextualize the materiality in the renderings.
