Royal Air Force Honington had the honour of hosting Her Majesty in years past and those that had the privilege of meeting her will forever remember that moment with pride.

Hello! As you read this the summer heat will be a fast fading memory and Autumn awaits, the new school term begins and we are all back to work in earnest from (I hope!) some well deserved summer leave. Yes – we are on the sprint to Christmas - via Battle of Britain, Remembrance and a plethora of other events both known and unknown to us. I guess that this is the challenge and reward of Service life or being the partner to a Service-person!

Note from the Editor: This edition of the Honington Herald was already in publication before the sad news of the death of Her Majesty. We include this message in our digital version:

and understand the considerable demands on you all, whatever part you play in the life and work of RAF Honington, and particularly when Service personnel are deployed away at short-notice –challenging for those deploying and those left behind. This is why developments like wrap-around child care and our strengthening social and community bonds are so important. I’m delighted that you will soon be able to grow your own food at our Station Allotment, and then perhaps cook, eat and enjoy it at one of our communal BBQ areas, before taking a walk around our

I hope that with such an award being presented to an engineer employed within the Force Protection Force through the sustained completion of aircraft engineering work and driving change within the infantry weapons arena, illustrates that engineering at RAF Honington not only directly supports Force Protection elements, but also exemplifies the Royal Air Force whole force concept.”

It both rewards his tremendous efforts in bringing about innovation and publicises an achievement that any engineer could be inspired by.”

We were then hitting the road the next day starting off with the basic flat roads and then easing into and slowly progressing through the levels. The ride through the woods and the large variety of mountain bike areas from simple trails to the tougher wild mountain routes which provided a personal challenge to every individual. The mud and obstacles provided by the trails were much outweighed by the spectacular and breath-taking backdrops seen on the trails. The afternoon workshop provided an opportunity for feedback

After successfully completing the week, everyone was awarded with The Mountain Bike Foundation qualification. Everyone is now very much looking forward to their next opportunity to mountain bike!

We are a specialist force which is uniquely trained and equipped to protect the RAF and enable its freedom of action. The FP Force is evolving now and #NextGenFP starts here!

The RAF of the 21st Century will be protected and enabled by a Next Generation Force Protection system. Understanding the threats of today, and the future, while acknowledging our

Global security is an increasingly complex issue, which is influenced by many factors including the pace of technological change and the pervasiveness of information. Competition for resources, territory and political power are all concerns which influence military thinking when it comes to the types of forces and capabilities required for the Royal Air Force over the coming years. In July 2022 as a Force we were able to showcase our Next Generation vision at the Global Air Space and Chief Conference in London and I hope that that you will enjoy reading about how we deliver our mission now and how it will develop in the future.

RAF FORCE PROTECTION HQ

As Air Land Integration and Command and Control experts, the RAF Regiment are highly trained close combat specialists that patrol and dominate the areas outside of our airbases to ensure that no enemy can endanger our assets and people. From controlling precision air strikes to recovering downed aircrew the RAF Regiment are trained to operate for extended lengths of time in the most austere environments. They are hunters who can utilise a wide array of weapons, vehicles and sensors to find, deter and destroy our enemies and dominate the Complex Air Ground Environment.

changing cultures and reliance on technology is the cornerstone of how the FP Force will adapt. With world-class intelligence-led Security capabilities, the Force will be configured for rapid entry into high threat environments, with lightweight forces that are also able to endure on more protracted operations.

We continue to push the boundaries on experimentation to approach tasks in unique ways. Robotics and autonomous ground systems are freeing up personnel to focus on more specialist tasks! But evolution is not just about ‘getting new kit’. We value proven capability. And the RAF Police Military Working Dogs provide unrivalled Search, Detect and Deter effects. Deployed globally they are valued and effective team members!

All of these capabilities work together, and every day we have well over 500 of our personnel deployed on global operations. Counter-Uncrewed Air Systems teams stand ready to detect and intercept drones and human intelligence teams work with the local population to identify the presence of the abnormal.

Each year the European Air Group hosts a multinational phased Force Protection Exercise – VOLCANEX is the generic name for a series of exercises which are training vehicles for the component forces of the Group. This year the Synthetic – Complex Air Ground Environment Team from the Force Protection Centra provided Command and Control training expertise and technical advice to the Exercise Hosts at King Albert Camp, Marche-En-Famenne Air Base in Belgium.

The multinational Exercise GLOBAL EAGLE 22 was hosted by the Force Protection Centre in June comprising 51 Squadron RAF Regiment, US Air Force 823rd Base Defence Squadron and French Commando Parachutiste de l’air 20. As the main objective of the Exercise is exchange an understanding of tactics, techniques, procedures and operational knowledge across all nations the participants were split and mixed to form 3 multinational teams to conduct defensive tactics, Air Transport Security procedures and Close Quarter Battle tactics. Counter Improvised Explosive scenarios and Patrol Base Operations utilising each nation’s Remote Piloted Air Systems followed. Wg Cdr Mitchell, OC Force Protection Centre, presented at an awards ceremony, where outstanding individual achievements were recognised. During these closing elements of the event, the benefits from this exercise became obvious with relationships between allies being re-established after the two-year hiatus caused by COVID. Following the end of training, all participants were invited to the RAF Honington Boxing evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Embracing Innovation and Partnerships

The Counter Threats Team deployed to Entebbe, Republic of Uganda to deliver support to the Department for Transport. This deployment saw representatives from the Metropolitan Police, British Airways and the Force Protection Centre conducting a training needs analysis in Uganda. This was completed by reviewing airport security alongside a capacity building programme, allowing the UK representatives to share best practice with the Ugandan delegation.

The Ghost 4 Remotely Piloted Air System was presented, which demonstrated a myriad of functions thanks to its Artificial Intelligence enabled software. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Wigston, was introduced to the vision and shares the belief that embracing innovation will ensure that Force Protection Force remains ever more relevant in the delivery of Air Power.

Protection Centre delivered the first pilot of a series of defensive tactics courses. Defensive Tactics meets the needs of the current training gap between ‘shout’ and ‘shoot’. It places emphasis on mental and physical resilience through

proven techniques from our US, French and German allies. Conducted throughout February and April, the courses included the Basic and Trainer courses. The Basic Operator course is the first step for all members of the RAF Regiment to learn defensive techniques in preparation for any potential volatile scenarios whilst on operations. Those who took part in the pilot have commented on the quality of the course and how they looked forward to progressing their training. Further courses are planned for the autumn and early in 2023.

Since it’s completion in the last couple of months, the BBQ area has already been used for various large station functions including Family’s Day and a number of sporting fixtures.

As ever, the day started with an introduction into the history of the Corps starting back 100 years ago with Armoured Car Companies in operations in the Arabian Peninsula, through to its formation to defend the RAF on Air Operations in WW2 and the enduring role that is still played in delivering Air Power across the Globe to this day.

Equipment and training has certainly changed over the years and continues to do so but seeing the Jackal, Foxhound and Panther vehicles was a welcome follow on from the Snatch Land Rovers in the Heritage Centre. That we still need to put our personnel from across the RAF into locations that not be the safest as individuals, was covered by seeing some of the training delivered by the Global High Threat Course at the Force Protection Centre and also the Virtual Reality Training tools including ‘Ready Gunner One’ at the RAF Regiment Training Wing too.

The RAF Benevolent Fund has helped in the provision and delivery of many significant projects across RAF Honington that benefit all age groups in families through Nursery and Youth groups to serving personnel too and our community by renovation of the Social Club and new BBQ areas to name but a few. SCC’s support will ensure the RAF Benevolent Fund will be able to continue to support our people, families and veterans when they need it.

Thank you from RAF Honington to the RAF Benevolent Fund and SCC.

This summer we saw (or some of you would have done) the media furore of the final EVER episode of Neighbours! I must confess, it is a long time since I watched the show, but nonetheless, I had a little dust in my eyes when I recalled Mrs. Mangle, Scott & Charlene’s wedding, and Plain Jane Super Brain becoming…well Jane!

what an experience this year’s event was – after a break of 2 years I participated once again, along with my husband Dave, in this year’s 4 Day March centred around Nijmegen in Holland. We decided that we would raise money for Dereham Cancer Care – a small local charity very dear to both our hearts. This was my 14th time taking part in 4 x 40 km distance – 10 as part of or leading a Military Team from / to Kamp Heumensoord and the last 4 as a civilian entry starting and finishing at the Wedren in the centre of Nijmegen itself.

Thank you to everyone sponsoredthatus– with Gift Aid we raised just over £1,000.

The unprecedented weather resulted in day 1 being cancelled for everyone - the problem being that the walk is mainly on roads and the ground temperature would be far more than the 40+ air temperature - even with start times of 0445 and 0545 hrs. Day 2 was in the 30’s, Day 3 (the day of the hills) was warm but the wettest I have ever experienced with water running down the roads like rivers because the drains couldn’t cope and Day 4 was again in the high 20’s / low 30’s.

As the sun went down on Clapham Common on Sat 14th May (and the temperature plummeted) Sqn Ldr Ali Sandeman stretched out her walking legs, donned her ‘Super Hero Bra’ and headed out for a marathon’s worth of miles firmly on her mind and plenty of music on her IPod.

On a mission to make the most of a million, give or take, steps to help raise millions of pounds for Breast Cancer Awareness and keep the ‘Footometer’ rising, she could be seen imitating Harley Quinn, pounding the London pavements and roads overnight to complete the challenge with 5,000 other walkers. With many of London’s famous landmarks lit up in pink, it was certainly a sight to be beheld.

The Specialist Courses Flight have successfully delivered an array of outputs including the highly demanding Close Quarter Battle Instructors Course. 12 students undertook an intensive range package where they honed their advanced marksmanship and the skill of transitioning between their primary and secondary weapons before focusing on developing the intricate tactical, command and control capabilities they require to tackle any given scenario. Tested in high pressure, realistic scenarios, all 12 are now qualified to deliver Close Quarter Battle training packages on return to their Units.

The students on the Junior Regiment Officers Course 127 are progressing well in their training completing deployments on Ex CENTURION’s GAUNTLET and CENTURION’s DAGGER on STANTA, followed by a complex communications package. These inaugural exercises are designed to build the strong foundations of fieldcraft skills, known collectively as Module 1 which culminated in Ex CENTURION’s LONGBOW and places the student on patrol actions to demonstrate their level of competence. Module 2 exposes, the now Competent Patrol Members, into the heady world of basic command. The students were taught a conceptual military tactical planning process and before they knew it, they were deployed to Sennybridge Training Area for a 3-week long battle exercise, testing their physical and mental fortitude, in arduous terrain and high stress command assessments; this is not for the faint hearted!

It is important that the student understands this as they progress on in their careers as Force Protection Specialists. Changing of terminology (part of the conceptual component of fighting power) is simply one sub-set of our Fighting Power Modernisation Strategy, which in simple terms aims to equip (physically and mentally) our Air Force Protection Close Combat Specialists for operations at home and abroad, through a strategy of ‘train as we fight’. We hope to update you more on this going forward.

Trainee Gunner Course 1-22, Salalah Flight, conducted Live Firing Marksmanship Training on the 25 metre range at RAF Honington before moving onto longer ranges at Colchester, before taking on their Annual Combat Marksmanship Test which is a mammoth achievement for any TG. Deploying on four separate fieldcraft exercises in July, the Flight Commander and Sergeants had to remain agile and pragmatic to safely achieve training objectives in the soaring temperatures we saw in July. With the high heat forecast across East Anglia, to those exposed on the training areas, at times the temperatures were reminiscent of Afghanistan! The remaining 37 TGs go into the Autumn with Module 1 complete and look forward to a well-deserved two-week summer break. When they return, they’ll commence Module 2 and a final 10 weeks of hard graft working towards their October Graduation.

Trainee Gunner Course 6-21, Meiktila Flight, started Air Force Protection week with a series of lessons focused around the ‘on base’ delivery of Force Protection in the Complex Air Ground Environment. The trainees observed a series of live demonstrations at RAF Honington’s Main Guardroom, assisted by the station’s RAF Police Flight to add realism. The week culminated with a hugely successful on-base confirmation exercise. Afterwards the TGs reflected that using a real gate on an active RAF Station, coupled with the support of the RAF Police, significantly enhanced their overall comprehension of the delivery of AIR FP in this environment. Close Quarter Battle was next on the agenda under the expert supervision of the Squadron’s Instructors and included Section level tactics enhanced by using Marker Round Training System, effectively a paint round, to simulate real ammunition and improve training value by being able to identify your fall of shot, and experiencing being hit, which encourages students to apply themselves more fully to the training. Finally, Meiktila Flight deployed to STANTA for their final summative assessment, Ex OMEGA. Meiktila graduated 18 Gunners on 4 August.

On the second day, we grabbed the surfboards and headed to Fistral beach for an exciting day of surfing introduction before travelling to St Austell to learn

What better way to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the RAF Regiment than contending with the Scottish Highlands with your fellow Gunners.

During the course of our 250km journey we were met by stunning Scottish scenery, some mechanical issues, a few cuts and bruises along the way and not forgetting the kamikaze sheep which always made for an interesting ride. Both mentally and physically challenging, the arduous climbs would always be met with thrilling downhills flying through the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

As expected, we had some challenging terrain to navigate through on our bikes. Fallen trees from a recent storm brought our ride to a halt, not for long though. With the bikes on our back, we took the obstacles by foot, and got back on our bikes as soon as we could. We were blessed with some smooth riding MTBing trails, one of which followed the perimeter of the stunning Kielder Water, undulating through the trees with the sun glinting off the water next to

We were lucky that we had minimal accidents, but by far one of my absolute favourite moments and something that forever plays over in my head and makes me laugh was when Andy Scott attempted to coast across a puddle at the bottom of a pretty steep descent, but to his dismay, the ‘puddle’ was not as shallow as he presumed and performed a pretty spectacular dive into the water sending his bike flying across to the other side of the

just outside Carlisle on day 1 of 4 we soon realised what a challenge the next few days would be. 1 Squadron RAF Regiment1 Sqn 28 HONINGTON HERALD

With our deployment as the Resident Force Protection Squadron at RAF Akrotiri now ended, the Officers and Gunners of 1 Squadron look back over some highlights of a memorable tour.

With upcoming tasks fast approaching when we return to the UK, the Squadron expanded its training to include a full Joint Personnel Recovery exercise with the flights conducting practice run throughs and revision on how to safely approach and identify potentially downed allied personnel. This culminated with a blank exercise including several enemies in depth up a rather steep mountain side!. Most importantly the exercise opened the eyes of the newer members of the Squadron to another capability that 1 Squadron RAF Regiment can provide to the RAF.

The Gunners were also able to rehearse a flight battle drill with a Live Fire Tactical Training range under the sun at Pyla Ranges, somewhat different to Wales in March! A practice casualty evacuation added to the training benefit with a Griffin Helicopter provided by 84 Sqn from RAF Akrotiri. Unfortunately, the location of Pyla ranges being right next to the Mediterranean meant that one of the flight

attacks did have to be paused due to boats and a particularly brave sea kayaker entering the danger area! Thankfully, the vigilance of the sentries on duty ensured that the Gunners still achieved some much-appreciated training.

Towardsmany.theend of the deployment, the Squadron also enjoyed a day’s Force Development. The cultural element of the day at the Kourion Ancient Greco-Roman Ruins was a stark contrast to the city of Nicosia and the border between the Greek and Turkish side of Cyprus to learn some history into the background of this split. At Kourion the Gunners saw some excellently preserved buildings and split into groups to give short presentations on each area of the ruins including the gladiator’s training building and a wealthy merchant’s home with a fantastic well survived mosaic floor. Arriving in Nicosia for lunch in the old town centre the groups then visited the old watch tower, which is now located on top of a H&M Store, to view the ‘Green Line’ separation zone that crosses the whole island and a quick lesson on the vast and interesting history of Cyprus!

It has been a memorable, enjoyable, and busy time for 1 Squadron over the previous months and the deployed Officers and Gunners are looking forward to getting back to the UK for some well-deserved leave!

It wasn’t all work however, and thanks to the efforts of Flt Lt Woodley-Jones, 1 Squadron was able to use his Kayaking qualifications and get the Squadron personnel out on the water for some much-deserved Adventurous Training. After a quick safety demo, the groups enjoyed exploring around the southern edge of the Akrotiri peninsula and included some confidence building game. A much-enjoyed outing and one that will be remembered as a highlight of the tour for
