In preparing for Thanksgiving, this year will be difficult with the loss of my Dad. However, Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful and thankful. It does seem ironic to have a death to make a person realize all the many blessings received. My Dad was a blessing to his family with his sense of humor, his tender heart, and his devotion to his family. I am thankful and grateful that Dad was MY Dad. Life is a gift and I hope that in preparing for your Thanksgiving Holiday, that you take the time ‘to give thanks.’ Voice Magazine and staff would like to ‘give thanks’ and express gratitude for another year. We have grown and, even with this challenging economy, the continued support to the magazine has brought new opportunities for us in the New Year. Watch our calendar for events and future activities that we will be hosting and sponsoring in 2011. We ask our fans to continue to show their support to our advertisers and businesses in the region. Voice Magazine is a ‘free’ magazine supported by the many businesses that advertise with us. We in turn, along with our readers, support them. We too are a small business and our BIG footprint in the region helps other businesses. Our readers do show loyalty to our advertisers! Thank you! That’s what keeps us and others going strong! We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! With the holiday season upon us, we hope that the spirit of giving reaches you and your loved ones. Please visit our website: voicemagazineforwomen.com and follow us on Facebook! Watch for our ‘question of the month’ on Facebook! Again - we encourage and enjoy hearing from you! “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:1-3 The story is told of a mother who promised her young daughter a trip to the petting zoo. Knowing the visit to the petting zoo was a few days away, the mother began talking with increased anticipation about the event. However, the mother’s anticipation only frustrated the little girl. She wanted to go NOW. But the mother knew something the little girl did not know. If they went now, the petting zoo would not be set up and the little girl’s heart would be broken. But if they waited just a few more days, the little girl could pet the animals to her heart’s delight. Mom knew that there was a time and place for the promise to be fulfilled. But, the trip must wait for the appointed time. That’s what we are doing today. Waiting for the appointed time…the day of the Lord. In fact, that’s what believers have been doing since the days after the resurrection: waiting for the return of Jesus. Some wait more patiently than others, while some try to calculate the exact date, time and place of His return. Many of us can recall recent attempts by groups to predict the return of Christ. In many ways, we are like the little girl who was promised a trip to the petting zoo and, like her, our ability to understand time is imperfect. What the little girl needed was to trust the words of her mother. What we need, then, is to trust the words of our Savior, “And, if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Our job is to be ready and trust that this will be a promise kept.

Get the Look Dear Fashion Flora, Am I too old to wear leggings... Wearing leggings after the ages of 40 or 50 is one of those questions that does not fall as a “one size fits all” answer. According to ‘The Glam Gals,’ Deborah Boland and JoJami Tyler (http://www.fabulousafter40.com/can-you-wearleggings-after-40-or-50-or-beyond,) the short answer is, you’re never too old for leggings, but you have to put them with the right outfits, shoes, etc…To avoid a costume and be fashion forward, remember that ‘Glam Gals need to be classy, not flashy.’ SO, How do you….. Wear Leggings as Pants They do not replace jeans. Leggings are skin hugging, and if worn with anything that ends above the thighs, can look downright tacky. Worn with a tunic top or a roomy kaftan blouse that ends at the mid-thigh, leggings can actually flatter your curves. Since leggings are meant to keep legs warm in the winter, pair up leggings with a long knit sweater, and hold it all together with an eye-catching yet, subtle belt. Do remember not to let any top you wear with leggings end above the hips. They should always cover the hips. Complete the entire look with a pair of ballerina shoes or gladiator sandals, and a large handbag to go with them.

...If I am over 40? Dare I say over 50? Wear Leggings with a Dress Opt for a dress with a straight cut if you want to wear it with leggings. Again, a belt holding together the entire outfit is an interesting addition. In some cases, even a flowing dress will look great. Do not allow the length of the dress to go beyond the knees. Pair up the look with interesting boots with a small heel. Those women wondering how to wear leggings with heels, and who just can't complete an outfit with them, should remember plain pumps are the most preferred choice with leggings. Wear Leggings with a Skirt The best purpose served by leggings is that they help you flaunt your legs without having to show skin. As such, women who are uncomfortable with short skirts can find leggings to their rescue. Ideally, a skirt worn with leggings should end mid-thigh. Anything longer or shorter will look distasteful. A denim skirt is the perfect choice for leggings. Wear Leggings with Boots The best way to wear leggings with boots is to tuck them into the boots. Ankle length boots, with a very small heel, are the perfect way to combine boots and leggings together. Contrast the color of the leggings with the boots so as to enable both to stand out. Avoid the DOs and DON’Ts Your figure is an important deciding factor about wearing leggings. If you are too curvy and not too tall, leggings may not be for you. While choosing the color of leggings, try to choose a shade that complements the outfit, rather than blatantly contrasting it. Steer clear of fluorescent shades, no matter what your age is. Don't wear very tight tops with leggings. The ideal look is to pair a large top with a small bottom to balance your figure. After all these tips, you still can't be wondering how to wear leggings. Glamorize yourself with this wonderful fashion accessory. You just can't go wrong this time!

Q

wants to know...

I am a single 29-year-old mom, and have a 9-year-old daughter. My daughter was not invited to her friendʼs birthday party. She says that she was only girl not invited. The girl passed the invites out during school. My daughter sits with this girl on the bus, at lunch, and they are on the cheerleading squad together. They attended each otherʼs parties last year. I am friendly with the mom and wonder if I should say something. I feel sad for my daughter and she now feels that she doesn't have ʻnice enough clothes.ʼ I also feel a bit angry, so how should I talk to my daughter about this?

was the ʻonlyʼ one not invited? How did your daughter know of the invitations, and how did she know that it was a birthday party? Secondly, set a time to meet with the mother. Invite her to join you for a cup of coffee and discuss it. Keep cool and donʼt make a debate about it. Let your daughter know that the invitations handed out were not to ʻintentionallyʼ exclude her, but to possibly develop ʻnewʼ friendships. Address your daughterʼs comment of ʻnot nice enough clothes.ʼ Why does she feel that way? Encourage her to see her beauty in whatever she may wear. Sincerely, Viola Voice

First, you need to set a positive example and be a positive role model in this situation. Do not express your anger or disappointment, as this will only hurt your daughterʼs feeling even more. Are you sure that she

Jeanne Robertson Leaves a Trail of Laughter for All Ages on her Comedy with Class Tour With her career nearly half a century in the making, humorous speaker Jeanne Robertson will add to her collection of milestones with her upcoming solo tour "Comedy with Class." This 67-year-old former Miss North Carolina stands tall at 6'2" and has a personality, heart and sense of humor just as soaring. For years, this funny lady's witty speeches have been mostly limited to conventions and meetings that were closed to the general public, but with six nationally released DVDs, three books, hundreds of hours on satellite radio and over 9 million YouTube views, the demand for Jeanne's family friendly and engaging brand of comedy has grown exponentially. Entertaining thousands each year, Jeanne is heard daily on Sirius XM Radio on the Laugh USA Family Friendly Comedy and Blue Collar Comedy channels. Meanwhile, the buzz around her laugh-out-loud comedy videos on YouTube has "gone viral" and now spans 9 million views, including more than 3.5 million for her "Don't Send a Man to the Grocery Store" story alone. The resounding success of two upcoming shows in Dallas, TX, and Durham, NC, sealed the deal with Comedy String Entertainment and Outback Concerts for a 20-city tour in 2011. Outback Concerts is the promotion company responsible for several of the top touring comedy acts, including Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Jeanne's real life stories are relatable and memorable, making her humor stand out amongst typical comedic entertainers. Through her message-driven comedy, listeners can easily see that Jeanne reaches for the positive in people and consistently brings it to the surface while leaving them holding their sides and wiping tears from their cheeks in laughter. She embodies the classic southern woman, and at 67 years of age she shows no signs of slowing down. After decades as a public speaker and humorist, this former Miss Congeniality winner makes sure to keep her content revolving and new. "I tire of telling the same set of stories. The thrill is in creating new material. It keeps me fresh," says Jeanne. Jeanne is no stranger to recognition either; she recently became the first woman to receive her area's Boy Scout "Man of the Year" award and has earned every top honor and award in her profession. She garnered the Certified Speaking Professional designation in 1980 and was inducted to the National Speakers Association's (NSA) Hall of Fame the following year. She shares the recognition with only 183 others, including Zig Ziglar, Ronald Reagan and Norman Vincent Peale, and was the first woman to receive NSA's most cherished honor, the Cavett Award. Standing tall in the man's world of professional speaking, she is one of the few women ever given the Golden Gavel Award from Toastmasters International, joining the likes of Earl Nightingale, Art Linkletter and Walter Cronkite. The North Carolina Press Association named her as its 2001 North Carolinian of the Year for her "popularity on the speaking circuit, her award-winning ways and her representation of North Carolina." Past recipients include notable public figures such as Elizabeth Dole, Rev. Billy Graham and Dean Smith. This refined comedienne brings delightful southern charm and loads of laughter to each performance. Jeanne Robertson's comedy is sharp and witty and always conveys a message beyond the surface. For more information about Jeanne and her upcoming appearances as the dates are released, please visit www.JeanneRobertson.com. Jeanne Robertson will appear at the Paramount Center for the Arts in downtown Bristol TN/VA on Veterans Day, November 11, 2010. Tickets are $22.50 and $18 for veterans. When ordering tickets, let us know that you are a veteran. Doors will open at 6:00PM with a special tribute to female veterans, Wurlitzer music and holiday fashion. A reception will follow in the lobby.

T gÜ|uâàx àÉ Åç Wtwwç March 29, 1928 - October 21, 2010 By daughter, Janie C. Jessee As many of you know, my Dad passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning, Oct. 21, 2010. I want to say “Thank you” to all of you for your thoughts and prayers for my family and me. It has been a difficult time, and I know that there will be many days ahead with more tears. My Dad, Tommy Fuller, was the maturing age of 82. He was a hard worker, loving father, and a loving, caring and dedicated husband to his wife (my mother) of 62 years. Born in Tazewell, Virginia, Dad made his home in Honaker, Virginia. He worked in the coal mining industry and farmed most of his life, but in the early 1970s, he became co-owner of an excavating & trucking business with my brother, Jimmy H. Fuller. Nothing was more exciting to my Dad than to ‘run’ a bulldozer - building roads, restructuring landscapes, and moving the earth. On his last day, he spoke of his desire to go back to work…on a bulldozer. Dad passed away in his sleep. He basically stopped breathing and could not

be revived. The news of his death (around 1:30 a.m. in the morning) left me numb. I went through the motions of being with family, but the darkness of the morning hours seemed to protect me from the reality. As the nighttime turned to daylight, I don’t think that I have seen a more beautiful sunrise. The bright sun’s rays cascaded across the distant mountaintops and the horizon stretched across the endless bright blue sky. As the sun rose, I thought, “what a beautiful day...and then I realized...Dad won’t be a part of it.” The day’s dawning brought with it the reality that Dad was no longer among us, and his absence would always be felt. Rev. Stephen Musick, of Honaker, VA, was the Officiating Clergy for my dad’s funeral service. He shared stories about my Dad, but especially how my Dad was thought to be ‘everybody’s paw paw.’ No one called my Dad, Mr. Fuller. He was called ‘paw paw’ – by the young and the old. Rev. Musick reminded us of Dad’s sense of humor and Dad’s love of his family. On behalf of my family, I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to Rev. Musick for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and support. Also, we would like to express our gratitude to the Honaker Funeral Home for the professional assistance in our time of loss. And ‘Thank you’ to all of you for the food, flowers, and condolences. May God Bless each and every one of you! Daddy - we miss you and love you! You will live on each day in our hearts!

A Healthy Twist on Holiday Meals By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent The beloved family recipes of the holidays rarely offer a balance of nutritious AND delicious. In fact healthy and holiday rarely go together. According to a recent Weight Watchers report, the average American gains 7-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Cooking healthy doesn’t have to meanless flavor. Some recipes can be altered by simply reducing an ingredient or substituting one for another. Some general reductions and substitutions include the following:

Crystal Robertson

• Sugar can be reduced by 1/3. Example: If a recipe says 1 cup, use 2/3 cup. This works best in home canned and frozen fruits and in making puddings and custards. It may be less desirable for cookies and cakes. It should be remembered that non-caloric sweeteners work best as substitutes for sugar in uncooked foods unless otherwise specified. They are usually adversely affected by heat. These substitutes also do not perform the other functions of sugar, such as browning and tenderness. • Fat can often be reduced by 1/3. Example: If the recipe has 6 tablespoons, use 4 tablespoons. This works best in gravies, sauces, puddings, and quick breads. • Salt may be left out or reduced by ½. Example: If the recipe says 1 tablespoon, use 1½ teaspoons. • Use spices and herbs for a different flavor. • Whole grain flour can be substituted for ¼ to ½ of refined flour. Example: If recipe has 3 cups all purpose flour, use ¾ cup whole grain flour and 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour. • Yogurt or cottage cheese may be substituted for sour cream in some sauce and dip recipes.

Other Common Substitutions Ingredient 1 whole egg 1 cup butter, lard or shortening 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup whole milk 1 cup light cream 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup sour cream 1 ounce cheese Cream cheese Mayonnaise

Substitution 2 egg whites or 1/4 egg substitute or 1 egg white and 1 teaspoon vegetable oil. 1 cup soft tub margarine (or special spreads such as Benecol, Take Control, Smart Balance) or 2/3 to 3/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 cup applesauce 1 cup applesauce, fruit or vegetable purees 1 cup 1% or skim milk 1 cup evaporated skim milk or 3 tablespoons vegetable oil plus 3 tablespoons skim milk 1 cup evaporated skim milk or 2/3 cup skim milk plus 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 cup plain low or non-fat yogurt; 1 cup low/non-fat cottage cheese plus 2 teaspoons lemon juice and 2 tablespoons low fat buttermilk 1 ounce skim or low fat cheese (5 grams or less of fat per ounce) "Light" cream cheese (3 grams or less of fat per ounce). Fat-free cream cheese; Neufchatel cheese; low fat ricotta cheese Low/non-fat mayonnaise; low/non-fat plain yogurt; 3/4 cup plain yogurt with 1/4 cup low calorie mayonnaise

There are many ways to prepare delicious meals that will fuel you for the hectic holiday schedule without weighing you down. Incorporate healthy recipes, indulge in some of your favorite holiday foods – in moderation, and enjoy the season of giving thanks!

DECORATING TRENDS New Fall Trends in Home Décor

Just like your wardrobe, your home can- and should- change with the seasons. Sabrina Soto, Target Style Expert for Home and HGTV Designer, offers a few simple ways to revitalize your home décor with the hottest seasonal trends and a quick lesson in updating your wall décor. Splashes of Color The fall color trends are vibrant and easy to incorporate- think turquoise, rust and chocolate brown. Soto suggests adding these effortless pops of color with bright accessories-vases, toss pillows and picture frames. To make an impact, use one color in the room at least three times. Lucite Clear Style Lucite is an incredibly versatile material often used in coffee tables and lamps. Soto suggests adding a colorful shade to the base for a touch of personal style. Target has a chic geometric Lucite lamp base for only $29.99, and mix-and-match shades starting at $12.99. Lush Velvet Comfortable cable-knit throws and heavier window treatments can give a room a more cozy look, says Soto. Velvet is on trend with its lush-looking sheen in a variety of colors including plum, rust and evergreen. Warm Scents To make a home feel even more cozy, Soto suggests candles with pumpkin, cinnamon or vanilla aromas. A centerpiece made of pumpkins or gourds atop autumn colored linens for your dining table creates a warm, welcoming setting. Create a Collage for Your Eclectic Taste A really hot trend right now is wall collages created with framed artwork, which can be easily updated each season by switching out photos or art in the frames or incorporating mirrors alongside traditional artwork for a personal, yet designer appeal.

Bake 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Natural Remedies for Cold and Flu Season Parents of young children know that colds and allergies are nothing to sneeze at. And when the flu strikes a household, they know that every member of the family is at risk of getting it. While a parent’s first step should always be to consult a doctor when a child is sick, there are other natural ways to ward off germs and ease the symptoms associated with cold and flu season. First, always remind your youngsters to wash their hands or use an all-natural hand sanitizer after using the bathroom and before and after eating. Hands should always be washed in warm, soapy water (for as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice). Remember, parents, the more you practice at home, the more your children will keep it in mind when they’re at school and under someone else’s supervision. If a member of your family becomes ill, a study has shown that soup can ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections that include nasal congestion, sore throat and coughing. The study, which was published in the publication Chest, showed scientists have discovered that soup contains an anti-inflammatory mechanism, and that warm liquid can be very effective at alleviating symptoms. Nasal irrigation is also a popular technique that is extremely effective at naturally eliminating the sources of nasal discomfort caused by colds, allergies and sinus congestion. Parents who use neti pots know that they are used by pouring a salt water

women’s 5K

solution into one nostril while tilting the head and letting it run out through the other nostril, using gravity as an aid. But parents also know that, while helpful, the neti pot can be awkward and especially uncomfortable for young children. Simply Saline® offers a line of nasal products made from purified water and salt that share the same benefits as a neti pot, but come in portable cans and offer easy-to-use application nozzles to eliminate any awkwardness or discomfort. Another popular homemade remedy uses buckwheat honey to help alleviate coughs. Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine recommends half a teaspoon of the honey for children 2 to 5 years old, a teaspoon for children 6 to 11 years old and two teaspoons for children over 12. Honey should not be given to children under 1 year of age as it is associated with infant botulism. You can find more nasal news and notes online at http://www.simplysaline.com/.

November – National Alzheimer’s Disease Month What is Alzheimer’s disease? Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a serious brain disorder that impacts daily living through memory loss and cognitive changes. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease, progressing from mild forgetfulness to widespread neurological impairment and ultimately death. Chemical and structural changes in the brain gradually destroy the ability to create, remember, learn, reason, and relate to others. As critical cells die, drastic personality loss occurs and body systems fail. Who has Alzheimer’s disease? • Although not all memory loss indicates Alzheimer’s disease, one in ten people over 65 years of age, and over half of those 85+ have Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, 26 million people worldwide have this dementia, and over 15 million Americans will be affected by the year 2050. • Early-onset Alzheimer’s effects patients under the age of 65. This relatively rare condition is seen more often when parents or grandparents developed Alzheimer’s disease at a young age, and is generally associated with three genetic markers. • For many, recognition of memory problems in themselves or a loved one brings fear of Alzheimer’s disease. Age-related brain shrinkage does produce normal changes in processing speed, attention, and short-term memory, creating so-called “senior moments.” Understanding significance begins with knowing what is normal. SIGNS OF NORMAL CHANGE VS. EARLY ALZHEIMER’S SYMPTOMS Normal Early Alzheimer’s disease Can’t find your keys Routinely place important items in odd places Search for casual names and words Forget names of family and common objects Briefly forget conversation details Frequently forget entire conversations Can’t find a recipe Can’t follow recipe directions Forget to write down a check Can no longer manage checkbook Cancel a date with friends Withdraw from usual interests Miss an occasional right turn Get lost in familiar places

What plastics are safe?

How do you tell which plastic containers are safe and which ones leach cancer-causing chemicals into your food? EASY - Look for the recycling number on the container. If you look at the bottom of the container, you’ll see a little triangle with a number inside it. Then follow these guidelines. • Containers with a 3, 6, 7 on the bottom are the most dangerous of all. They contain a dangerous and volatile chemical called BPA, and should be avoided at all costs. • Containers with 4 or 5 on the bottom are generally safe, but you should probably use them sparingly. And never use them in a microwave. • Containers with 1 or 2 on the bottom are the safest. These include clear water containers, as well as most cloudy containers you normally find water and milk in. These containers, called PETE and HDPE, are safe for storing food and drink – but again, you should never use them to microwave.

12 Tips to Keep your Animals Safe this Holiday Season The holiday season is upon us! But through the rush of the holidays, don’t forget the cautious care of your pets. Here are “12 pet tips of Christmas” to help keep your dog and cat safe during the eventful holiday season. Anticipate your guest’s arrivals and confine your dog to prevent it from escaping or worse yet “soiling” your guest’s clothes with an unwanted jump. Reduce your dog’s stress by maintaining its regular feeding and exercise routine. Develop a routine for your dog during holiday parties. A special treat in a special room of your house works well. Put packages out of reach! Dogs who smell food in a package will rip it open. Food is the number one holiday hazard for dogs. The foods that we eat can cause havoc on an animal’s intestines. Put away children’s toys after they are opened. Ingested toys can cause choking and may have to be removed through surgery. Tell guests not to share indulgences with your pet. Poultry skin, fat trimmings, rich gravies, and buttery sauces can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, or even worse, a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Also, remember that an ounce of alcoholic beverage can put a small dog into a coma. Stow chocolate candy or baking ingredients out of reach. Chocolate is the most common toxicity treat during the holidays. Small amounts cause problems. Larger amounts can cause above normal heart rhythms, nervous system malfunctions, and even death. Secure your garbage in bins with tight lids. (This is a good habit to get into all year!) A dog can chew up holiday garbage, which can result in intestinal problems. Buy only decorating products that are labeled non-toxic. Secure large trees to the wall to prevent tipping, or consider a smaller tree that can fit on a tabletop.

Remember that stomach problems can be caused by popcorn and gumdrops. Avoid using these strings of edible decorations. Fasten all your tree decorations securely, with the more fragile ones at the top. Dogs who chew these can suffer cuts in their mouth from broken ornaments. Return paper and other gift wrapping materials to their storage places after gift wrapping is finished. Place holiday plants out of reach and vacuum often. Poinsettia can cause drooling, oral pain, and vomiting. Mistletoe causes vomiting, labored breathing, shock, and death from cardiovascular collapse. When animals eat the needles from real or fake trees, they can also get intestinal blockage. Display candles on high shelves to avoid painful burns and singed Whiskers and make sure that cords are tucked out of reach. Electrocution can put a huge damper on Holiday festivities. Have a wonderful ‘pet-friendly’ holiday! For more tips, visit www.bestbullysticks.com
