Hasn’t this year been a year to remember? The slow improving economy has taken its toll on many businesses and many families. And on a personal level, I faced losing a parent – my Dad. But with each year, all of us are faced with new beginnings and final endings. It’s the path along the way that creates the journey’s story. I will recall 2010 with joyfulness and sadness. But I look forward to this holiday and the New Year with the hope of good things to come! The Christmas Rush I hurried into the local department store to grab some last minute Christmas gifts. What a hassle! I hurried through all the people to the toy department, and wondered if the grandkids would even play with any of the toys. I found myself in the doll aisle, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a little boy about 5 years old holding a lovely doll. He kept touching her hair and he held her so gently. He turned to a woman, asked, “Auntie J, are you sure I don’t have enough money?” She replied a bit impatiently, “You know that you don’t have enough money for it – don’t go anywhere and I will be right back.” The boy continued to hold the doll. I turned and asked, “Who’s the doll for?” The little boy answered, “It’s the doll my sister wanted for Christmas. She just knew that Santa would bring it to her.” “Maybe Santa is going to, “I said with a smile. “No, he answered, “Santa can’t go where my sister is…I have to give the doll to my Momma to take to her.” “Where is your sister?” I asked. With sad eyes he said, “She has gone to be with Jesus. My Daddy says that Momma is going to have to go be with her. I told my Daddy to tell Momma not to go yet. I told him to tell her to wait till I got back from the store.” Then, the boy pulled out a picture that had been taken of him in front of the store and said, “I want my Momma to take this with her so she don’t ever forget me. I love my Momma so very much and I wish she did not have to leave me - but Daddy says she has to be with my sister.” Stunned and heartbroken, I reached into my purse and pulled out a hand full of bills. “Let’s count that money one more time?” So, I slipped my money in with his and we began to count it. It was plenty for the doll. He softly said, “Thank you Jesus for giving me enough money.” Then he turned to me and said, “I just asked Jesus to give me enough money to buy this doll so Momma can take it with her to give to my sister, and he heard my prayer. I wanted to ask him for enough to buy my Momma a white rose, but I didn’t ask him, but he answered my prayer with enough to buy the doll and a rose for my Momma. Momma loves white roses.” As I finished my shopping, I kept remembering a story in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunk driver hitting a car and killing a little girl, and the Mother was in serious condition. Two days later I read in the paper where the family had disconnected the life support and the young woman had died. Later that day, unsure, I bought some white roses and took them to the funeral home where the young woman was. And there she was - holding a lovely white rose, the beautiful doll, and the picture of the little boy in the store. I left there in tears, my life changed forever. The love that little boy had for his little sister and his mother was overwhelming. Start a checklist a couple weeks before the event to start arranging those ideas and the planning. Shop early. A few days before the party, figure out your menu and pick up all the ingredients. Look for great party-friendly foods from appetizers to desserts - ready-made or frozen selections that are delicious and affordable. Shop early in the day so you can relax and not feel rushed. Keep drinks simple. Fancy up plain water by adding raspberries or slices of cucumber to the pitcher. Make sparkling spritzers by combining juice with sparkling water. For an elegant touch, garnish the glasses with lemon, mint or pomegranate seeds. If serving cocktails, look for inexpensive wines and discounted alcohol beverages. (For an extra twist on your party - Have a wine-tasting party and ask everyone to bring their favorite bottle of wine under $10. It's fun to cover up the wine labels and have people vote on their favorite.) Serve a selection of ready-made appetizers, cheeses, crackers, olives and breads. A tasty idea is to transfer two containers of ready-made artichoke dip to a small oven-safe baking dish, top it with crushed pecans and bake until bubbly on the edges. Cook ahead. Think of meals that you can prepare ahead of time and serve at room temperature so you're not trapped in the kitchen worrying about timing and synchronizing dishes. For dessert, choose a ready-made dessert or a dessert you can make ahead of
time. Top off an ordinary dessert or individual servings with these cute sweets for instantly-holiday-themed desserts. Coffee and tea are inexpensive and just add a dash of cinnamon, cardamom or peppermint to transform hot drinks from ordinary to festive. Cleaning is made simple by cleaning and arranging the main party rooms. This includes making sure everything you will need is contained within this party area, including a place to store coats. Easy Quick Bites: Cranberry Goat Cheese Bites: This appetizer is the kind that every host loves. There's no preparation -- just place the ingredients on a platter or cheese board, and let your guests assemble their own servings. You get all the credit and have secretly enlisted your guests to do all the work. Caviar or Smoked Salmon Pumpernickel Toasts: Spread a bit of whipped cream cheese on toasted party pumpernickel rounds and top with caviar or slivers of smoked salmon and dill sprigs. Brie, Pear and Sugar Glazed Pecans on Puff Pastry: Cut puff pastry sheets into squares or rectangles, top with brie, finely chopped pear and a sugar glazed pecan and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Miniature Bacon and Chive Tarts: Mash together a spreadable cheese, like Boursin Garlic and Fine Herbs, with cooked crumbled bacon and fresh chopped chives. Spoon into ready-made mini tart shells and bake at 400 degrees for 7 to 10 minutes. Fruit and Cheese Skewers: Cube a semi-firm cheese , cutting your favorite bread to the same size. Using a cocktail toothpick, skewer a small piece of dried apricot, prune or red grape with the cheese and square of bread. Stuffed Figs: Stuff fresh chevre cheese or Boursin Black Pepper cheese into split figs and top with cherry preserves and a toasted walnut. Honey Pistachio Cheese Cubes: Dip cubes of cheese in honey and roll in chopped pistachios. Serve skewered with cocktail toothpicks. When serving chips, add popcorn to dress it up with nuts or chocolate chips and you have an instant party food. Happy Holidays the easy way!

Ahh honey...you don't have to say anything poignant. Open your arms - wrap her into a warm hug and tell her you will always be there for her. She is a mess because she is on an emotional roller coaster ride. You will need some Kleenex, an understanding, compassionate heart, a sense of empathy, and plenty of hugs! Some people like to be around others while others want to be left alone. Regardless of which one she is, tell her how sorry you are that she is sad and going through this. Once you have told her how badly you feel that she is hurting, let your friend know that you are there for her if and/when she ever needs to
talk. And if she does want to talk - LISTEN!!! It is not about you - this is about her! At this point, your friend might open up to you and express how she is feeling or dealing with the loss. This might involve the person crying. If that happens, pat her on the back, and/or offer a hug. She might choose not talk about her feelings at this time. If she expresses that, respect her wishes! Give her some space and change the subject. You have done your best by letting her know that you are there for her. Sometimes when you have lost someone very dear you don't want to hear words...you just want to feel love.

Creating Meaningful Christmas Traditions for Kids By: Martha McGlothlin Gayle Bright, shiny toys…Santa on every corner…a gazillion packages under the tree. Is this what Christmas is all about? Of course not, but that’s what seems to begin every year come the first of November. Our kids need more meaningful holiday traditions, and it’s never too early to start! The most obvious and most meaningful tradition would be to help the needy. Small children can go through their toys and pick a few to give to those less fortunate. Go a step further and have children deliver the toys to others. Help in Martha McGlothlin a soup kitchen, visit a nursing home (sing Christmas carols Gayle while you’re there), or start your own food drive by boxing up items and simply delivering them yourself to families in need. My family did this for years when I was growing up. Yes, you may have to push your kids to go along with what they perceive to be embarrassing tasks, but speaking from experience, the rewards are great. Smiles on faces make the best presents! My next favorite idea is to make gifts. Homemade gifts carry far more meaning than store-bought. Do I hear some grumbling out there? You don’t have to be crafty or super-creative. Family and friends love just about anything a little child makes for them. Kids can make cards, ornaments, cookies, paint their own pottery, and draw pictures that you can put in frames. Ceramics studios such as Kil’n Time will even let you take the pieces home to paint and bring back to fire in the kiln (trust me, this is the easiest way when you have a gaggle of toddlers like I do). Let the kids help with all the Christmas fun! Decorating, wrapping gifts and baking. So what if all the ornaments are clumped at the bottom of the tree, the tape is crooked on the package and there’s a little bit (no, a lot) of flour around the kitchen? Those are the most meaningful memories you will have from the holidays. Finally, don’t forget to simply spend time visiting with loved ones during this season. Have a sing-a-long by the piano and play secret Santa. Children running around the house is what it’s all about during Christmas! Gill Braswell is a native of North Carolina, but came to Abingdon in 2002 to work at Barter Theatre in the production “Keep on the Sunny Side;” a play which delighted audiences with the songs and story of the Original Carter Family. “I stayed at Barter Theatre and did multiple shows,” stated Gill, “including originating the role of ‘Dr. Ralph Stanley in Man of Constant Sorrow;’ a production of the story of the Stanley Brothers.” Amy and Gill met while they were both working at Barter Theatre. Amy is a native of Southwest Virginia and has lived in Washington County for most of her life. Their shared interest helped them develop their vision for the store. “It’s taken about 3 years, but we came up with a list of core beliefs that Capo's is founded on. Those beliefs center on being an outlet for Appalachian artists, education, and striving to be a strong part of the community. We host a variety of events, singer/songwriter nights, speakers, performers, workshops and a Saturday night open acoustic jam – making Capo’s the local Appalachian artists’ outlet.” Located at 903 East Main Street, Capo's is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 7pm and Saturday from 10am to 9pm. Here are some ideas for easing the budget without feeling like a grinch: Give A Priceless Gift: When you make a gift, you give of your time - the most valued gift of all. Make a “Gift of Time” certificate for a chore an older relative cannot easily do, or a trip to the park, or a slumber party for the kids. Think outside the gift box. Buy a single gift for the entire family, such as an entertainment basket filled with DVDs, microwave popcorn, and gift certificates to the movies. Consider giving an environmental excursion, such as kayaking or camping. Make edible gifts such as breads, cookies, or dry jar mixes, which the recipient can prepare later. Package them in reusable tins, baskets, jars, or decorative bags or boxes. Send e-mail holiday greeting cards. This saves money and the environment. Draw, design, and print your own cards, gift tags, and mailing labels from old cards or recycled paper. Holiday plants such as poinsettias, chrysanthemums and Christmas cactus make wonderful “green” gifts for any budget. Plants can be enjoyed long after the holiday season is over. Give local products like locally grown citrus, honey, or work from a local artist.
On entertainment: Trade and borrow outfits with your friends for new holiday attire. You may be able to give each other a little facelift this season, instead of you both heading to the store. Rather than cooking or catering for the entire dinner party, offer a potluck and invite everyone to bring a dish. This is great time to enjoy a gourmet coffee date instead of lunch or dinner out – less than $10. Make sure your Christmas lights aren’t coming on too early or staying on all night watch the energy bills right along with all the other money leaks! Most of all enjoy the spirit of giving and celebrating. Don’t get hindered trying to impress with an elaborate party or purchase the most expensive items on the market. Spending time with your loved ones and giving gifts from the heart are more valuable than gold!

First, create an overall holiday spending limit. This should not only include gifts, but other things such as clothes, wrapping paper, special meals, and travel, if necessary. At the same time, look at the rest of your budget and estimate how much you can afford to spend without racking up debt. Keep track of what you actually spend and compare it against your budgeted amount. If you overspend in one area, you must reduce costs in another. If you have already gone over your budgeted amount, you still have many options without going into debt. Christmas Cheese Ball How to Set a ʻSimpleʼ Dining Room Table Identify how many guests you will be having and it is always a good idea to sit people strategically. Husbands and wives together, but also make sure that everyone is in a position to get to know each other better if it is a "mixer" dinner party. Clean off table and add a linen table cloth. Place the plates down first. Main course plates in front. Salad plate up and to the right. Place napkins on left side of plate. Salad fork (smaller) on furthest outside left of plate. Add dinner fork to the right of that. On the right side of the plate, place knife, blade turned towards plate. Then place spoon(s) next to that. Dinner spoon first then soup spoons (if necessary) on the right of the dinner spoon. Place glasses on upper right hand side of seating and have the flower arrangement and candles in the middle of the table.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we do. 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 4 ounces Velveeta cheese 8 ounces Philadelphia cream cheese 4 ounces port wine cheese 1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 box Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal

1. Soften cheeses. 2. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly by using hands and squeezing through fingers (fun!). 3. Form into three (3) equal balls or logs. 4. Crush approximately 2 cups of Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal by placing in large plastic ziploc bag, close, and use a rolling pin to crush to desired texture. 5. In a large bowl, gently roll balls or logs in Craklinʼ Oat Bran cereal. 6. Chill and serve with pretzels and crackers.

Get the Look Salon has been a contributing business in the Tri-Cities area for more than a decade. It was founded in 1995 by Rhonda Parvin and Melissa Brock, both trained and eager professionals. In 1998 Rhonda decided to expand her venture by opening Get the Look Too in Gray. This location thrived, and soon became a local hot-spot. The salon is a family run business, boasting the employment of Melissa's husband and children. The remainder of her staff consists of dedicated employees including Jennifer Hodge Price who has remained in the employment of Get the Look from the beginning, Ronnie Dunford, Denise Dodge, Kim Thomas, Johnna Barron, and Wanda Robinson. Due to the fine services provided by these individuals, Get the Look was voted one of the top three salons in the Tri-Cities area.
