Hasn’t this year been a year to remember? The slow improving economy has taken its toll on many businesses and many families. And on a personal level, I faced losing a parent – my Dad. But with each year, all of us are faced with new beginnings and final endings. It’s the path along the way that creates the journey’s story. I will recall 2010 with joyfulness and sadness. But I look forward to this holiday and the New Year with the hope of good things to come! A sneak preview of ‘good things to come’ for the New Year of 2011 will be our hosting and participation in many community events. This year, Voice Magazine will be participating with the 4th Annual International Women's Day Celebration of Bristol, hosted by the Women's Empowerment Network of Bristol! Mark your calendars! Join us on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Country Club of Bristol. Watch for more details. Also, watch for details on Voice Magazine’s 2011 schedule for a couple of new expo events! Very exciting! As we close our 2010 chapter and focus on the new chapter, 2011, we wish to say ‘thank you’ to all! This has been a rewarding, yet challenging year, but our enduring strength comes from all our advertisers, local businesses, readers, fans, supporters and media partners. Thank you! In 2011, we will celebrate our 8th anniversary – yes – eight years ‘thanks’ to you ! We ask for your continued support as we step into another year – an unknown zone! Please visit our website : www.voicemagazineforwomen.com for early details of events. By the way, we are making improvements to our website, so please be patient with us. The Christmas Rush I hurried into the local department store to grab some last minute Christmas gifts. What a hassle! I hurried through all the people to the toy department, and wondered if the grandkids would even play with any of the toys. I found myself in the doll aisle, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a little boy about 5 years old holding a lovely doll. He kept touching her hair and he held her so gently. He turned to a woman, asked, “Auntie J, are you sure I don’t have enough money?” She replied a bit impatiently, “You know that you don’t have enough money for it – don’t go anywhere and I will be right back.” The boy continued to hold the doll. I turned and asked, “Who’s the doll for?” The little boy answered, “It’s the doll my sister wanted for Christmas. She just knew that Santa would bring it to her.” “Maybe Santa is going to, “I said with a smile. “No, he answered, “Santa can’t go where my sister is…I have to give the doll to my Momma to take to her.” “Where is your sister?” I asked. With sad eyes he said, “She has gone to be with Jesus. My Daddy says that Momma is going to have to go be with her. I told my Daddy to tell Momma not to go yet. I told him to tell her to wait till I got back from the store.” Then, the boy pulled out a picture that had been taken of him in front of the store and said, “I want my Momma to take this with her so she don’t ever forget me. I love my Momma so very much and I wish she did not have to leave me - but Daddy says she has to be with my sister.” Stunned and heartbroken, I reached into my purse and pulled out a hand full of bills. “Let’s count that money one more time?” So, I slipped my money in with his and we began to count it. It was plenty for the doll. He softly said, “Thank you Jesus for giving me enough money.” Then he turned to me and said, “I just asked Jesus to give me enough money to buy this doll so Momma can take it with her to give to my sister, and he heard my prayer. I wanted to ask him for enough to buy my Momma a white rose, but I didn’t ask him, but he answered my prayer with enough to buy the doll and a rose for my Momma. Momma loves white roses.” As I finished my shopping, I kept remembering a story in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunk driver hitting a car and killing a little girl, and the Mother was in serious condition. Two days later I read in the paper where the family had disconnected the life support and the young woman had died. Later that day, unsure, I bought some white roses and took them to the funeral home where the young woman was. And there she was - holding a lovely white rose, the beautiful doll, and the picture of the little boy in the store. I left there in tears, my life changed forever. The love that little boy had for his little sister and his mother was overwhelming. And in a split second a drunk driver had ripped the life of that little boy into pieces. “We make a living by what we get; We make a life by what we give.” (http://www.annien.com, Written by Annie) “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17 Jesus is the reason for the season! Easy Holiday Entertaining

Start a checklist a couple weeks before the event to start arranging those ideas and the planning. Shop early. A few days before the party, figure out your menu and pick up all the ingredients. Look for great party-friendly foods from appetizers to desserts - ready-made or frozen selections that are delicious and affordable. Shop early in the day so you can relax and not feel rushed. Keep drinks simple. Fancy up plain water by adding raspberries or slices of cucumber to the pitcher. Make sparkling spritzers by combining juice with sparkling water. For an elegant touch, garnish the glasses with lemon, mint or pomegranate seeds. If serving cocktails, look for inexpensive wines and discounted alcohol beverages. (For an extra twist on your party - Have a wine-tasting party and ask everyone to bring their favorite bottle of wine under $10. It's fun to cover up the wine labels and have people vote on their favorite.) Serve a selection of ready-made appetizers, cheeses, crackers, olives and breads. A tasty idea is to transfer two containers of ready-made artichoke dip to a small oven-safe baking dish, top it with crushed pecans and bake until bubbly on the edges. Cook ahead. Think of meals that you can prepare ahead of time and serve at room temperature so you're not trapped in the kitchen worrying about timing and synchronizing dishes. For dessert, choose a ready-made dessert or a dessert you can make ahead of

time. Top off an ordinary dessert or individual servings with these cute sweets for instantly-holiday-themed desserts. Coffee and tea are inexpensive and just add a dash of cinnamon, cardamom or peppermint to transform hot drinks from ordinary to festive. Cleaning is made simple by cleaning and arranging the main party rooms. This includes making sure everything you will need is contained within this party area, including a place to store coats. Easy Quick Bites: Cranberry Goat Cheese Bites: This appetizer is the kind that every host loves. There's no preparation -- just place the ingredients on a platter or cheese board, and let your guests assemble their own servings. You get all the credit and have secretly enlisted your guests to do all the work. Caviar or Smoked Salmon Pumpernickel Toasts: Spread a bit of whipped cream cheese on toasted party pumpernickel rounds and top with caviar or slivers of smoked salmon and dill sprigs. Brie, Pear and Sugar Glazed Pecans on Puff Pastry: Cut puff pastry sheets into squares or rectangles, top with brie, finely chopped pear and a sugar glazed pecan and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Miniature Bacon and Chive Tarts: Mash together a spreadable cheese, like Boursin Garlic and Fine Herbs, with cooked crumbled bacon and fresh chopped chives. Spoon into ready-made mini tart shells and bake at 400 degrees for 7 to 10 minutes. Fruit and Cheese Skewers: Cube a semi-firm cheese , cutting your favorite bread to the same size. Using a cocktail toothpick, skewer a small piece of dried apricot, prune or red grape with the cheese and square of bread. Stuffed Figs: Stuff fresh chevre cheese or Boursin Black Pepper cheese into split figs and top with cherry preserves and a toasted walnut. Honey Pistachio Cheese Cubes: Dip cubes of cheese in honey and roll in chopped pistachios. Serve skewered with cocktail toothpicks. When serving chips, add popcorn to dress it up with nuts or chocolate chips and you have an instant party food. Happy Holidays the easy way!

Here are some DO’s and DONT’s and Must-Have’s for the ‘holiday party’ season. Dress appropriately... Don't overdress... Don't over accessorize... Do Dress comfortably... Do skip the holiday-themed apparel... Do take that last minute look at yourself in the mirror to make sure everything is looking perfect! The little black dress. The black dress is ideal for women who have a classic sense of style and those who adore Audrey Hepburn. Buy one that will best complement body curves. To spruce up the look, accessories with pearl earrings and lace gloves. Black satin is great to showcase curves, but not to have the dress tight or clinging. A luxury bag. You must have the appropriate holiday handbag for the holiday parties. A big hobo bag ruins the perfect holiday ensemble. Keep it in a budget, look for a perfect gold shiny, or black sequin bag at a consignment shop or thrift store.

Casual & Formal Wear

Let the ring speak up. Make a statement with a cute cocktail ring. Ideally, keep the dress simple when opting for large jewelry. Instead of wearing a complete set of jewelry and glowing like a walking Christmas tree, opt for a huge ring instead.

Q A

Dear Viola, My best friend just lost her Mom to cancer and she is a mess. What should I say to her? And what should I do?

Ahh honey...you don't have to say anything poignant. Open your arms - wrap her into a warm hug and tell her you will always be there for her. She is a mess because she is on an emotional roller coaster ride. You will need some Kleenex, an understanding, compassionate heart, a sense of empathy, and plenty of hugs! Some people like to be around others while others want to be left alone. Regardless of which one she is, tell her how sorry you are that she is sad and going through this. Once you have told her how badly you feel that she is hurting, let your friend know that you are there for her if and/when she ever needs to

talk. And if she does want to talk - LISTEN!!! It is not about you - this is about her! At this point, your friend might open up to you and express how she is feeling or dealing with the loss. This might involve the person crying. If that happens, pat her on the back, and/or offer a hug. She might choose not talk about her feelings at this time. If she expresses that, respect her wishes! Give her some space and change the subject. You have done your best by letting her know that you are there for her. Sometimes when you have lost someone very dear you don't want to hear words...you just want to feel love.

Sincerely, Viola Voice Ask Viola Voice! Do you have a question? Send your question to: Dearviola@voicemagazineforwomen.com. Disclaimer: These Q&A are for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered informational, instructional, or a medical diagnosis.

Creating Meaningful Christmas Traditions for Kids By: Martha McGlothlin Gayle Bright, shiny toys…Santa on every corner…a gazillion packages under the tree. Is this what Christmas is all about? Of course not, but that’s what seems to begin every year come the first of November. Our kids need more meaningful holiday traditions, and it’s never too early to start! The most obvious and most meaningful tradition would be to help the needy. Small children can go through their toys and pick a few to give to those less fortunate. Go a step further and have children deliver the toys to others. Help in Martha McGlothlin a soup kitchen, visit a nursing home (sing Christmas carols Gayle while you’re there), or start your own food drive by boxing up items and simply delivering them yourself to families in need. My family did this for years when I was growing up. Yes, you may have to push your kids to go along with what they perceive to be embarrassing tasks, but speaking from experience, the rewards are great. Smiles on faces make the best presents! My next favorite idea is to make gifts. Homemade gifts carry far more meaning than store-bought. Do I hear some grumbling out there? You don’t have to be crafty or super-creative. Family and friends love just about anything a little child makes for them. Kids can make cards, ornaments, cookies, paint their own pottery, and draw pictures that you can put in frames. Ceramics studios such as Kil’n Time will even let you take the pieces home to paint and bring back to fire in the kiln (trust me, this is the easiest way when you have a gaggle of toddlers like I do). Let the kids help with all the Christmas fun! Decorating, wrapping gifts and baking. So what if all the ornaments are clumped at the bottom of the tree, the tape is crooked on the package and there’s a little bit (no, a lot) of flour around the kitchen? Those are the most meaningful memories you will have from the holidays. Finally, don’t forget to simply spend time visiting with loved ones during this season. Have a sing-a-long by the piano and play secret Santa. Children running around the house is what it’s all about during Christmas! Martha McGlothlin Gayle is the mom of four toddlers, all under the age of four. She enjoys making jewelry (see her website at www.marthajane.com), writing her blog (www.theconfettichronicles.blogpot.com), shopping at flea markets and decorating her home with salvaged items. Martha is also president of The United Company Charitable Foundation in Bristol, Virginia.

Capo’s Music Store Features Music & Arts of Appalachia

One year ago, Amy and Gill Braswell moved forward on a vision they shared for an Appalachian arts store in Abingdon, VA. “We meshed together our interests and passions to create a shopping experience unlike any other in the region,” stated Amy. “We opened our shop, Capo's Music Store, on December 4, 2009, with instruments, art, books and much more.” The retail store, Capo’s Music Store, centers on the arts of Appalachia. “Art is deeply rooted in Appalachian culture, “ stated Gill, “from fiber arts to literature, visual arts to storytelling, and the art of making music, we here at Capo's seek to honor that heritage by offering a house for art in its many forms.” Capo's, located in Abingdon, is an all acoustic music store offering a variety of acoustic music instruments, books, Appalachian crafts, art by local artists, books, CDs, and DVDs and so much more.

Gill Braswell is a native of North Carolina, but came to Abingdon in 2002 to work at Barter Theatre in the production “Keep on the Sunny Side;” a play which delighted audiences with the songs and story of the Original Carter Family. “I stayed at Barter Theatre and did multiple shows,” stated Gill, “including originating the role of ‘Dr. Ralph Stanley in Man of Constant Sorrow;’ a production of the story of the Stanley Brothers.” Amy and Gill met while they were both working at Barter Theatre. Amy is a native of Southwest Virginia and has lived in Washington County for most of her life. Their shared interest helped them develop their vision for the store. “It’s taken about 3 years, but we came up with a list of core beliefs that Capo's is founded on. Those beliefs center on being an outlet for Appalachian artists, education, and striving to be a strong part of the community. We host a variety of events, singer/songwriter nights, speakers, performers, workshops and a Saturday night open acoustic jam – making Capo’s the local Appalachian artists’ outlet.” Located at 903 East Main Street, Capo's is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 7pm and Saturday from 10am to 9pm. Extended seasonal shopping hours include open Sundays from 12pm to 7pm from November 28 to December 19. JOHNSON CITY, TN: SHOP LOCALLY Experience yesterday’s goodies with today’s conveniences

C & C Buildings & Country Store, located 4517 Bristol Hwy, Johnson City (Near DeVault Bridge) just got their doors opened for business! “We are chocked full of Amish canned goods, baking mixes, soups, popcorn, snacks, Amish noodles, flavored ciders, apples, pumpkins, mums, old fashioned candies, fudge, glass bottled sodas, cookbooks, maple syrup, Cowboy Crackers, BBQ sauces, Amish butter, cheeses and meats, tonic, beef jerky, handmade soaps and lotions, gift baskets, fresh baked breads, pastries, desserts and more – everything from pickled garlic to TOE Jam and FROG Jam,” according to the owners, Cowboy and Connie Pike. “And also, we offer Skilled Mennonite Crafted unique outdoor furniture - and soon we will offer portable storage buildings - Rent to own with no credit check.” Cowboy and Connie Pike, proprietors of this establishment, are residents of Davidson, NC. Cowboy hails from eastern North Carolina, while Connie was homegrown right here in Blountville, TN. “We have our brother-in-law Gordon, of Piney Flats, to oversee the day-to-day operations at the store with wife Karen (Connie's sister) assisting and minding the gift baskets.” Connie and Cowboy first went into business with C & C Cook for Hire, Inc. to raise money to assist with medical bills for their son who developed cancer a few years ago. Cowboy's grandfather Sam Pike from Duplin County, NC, served as a cook in the army during WWII and over the years developed a secret family recipe for BBQ sauce. Cowboy and Connie use the secret recipe today to cater to businesses and parties

of any size. (Visit their website www.cowboycrackers.com for more on Grandpa Sam and how the Pikes support our troops.) Next to evolve was Cowboy Crackers. “It too is a secret recipe – the crackers are marinated spicy crackers to be eaten alone, topped with almost anything or used in recipes. They are loved!” Cowboy and Connie loved visiting Amish country in Lancaster County, PA, and Holmes County, OH, and with love comes their business C & C Buildings & Country Store. With a location in Concord, NC, and this location in Johnson City, TN, the Pikes hope to open another in Salisbury, NC soon. Conveniently located on Bristol Hwy, Cowboy and Connie invite all of you to stop by. “Come by, sit a spell and enjoy an ice cold sodie pop. ʻGreenʼ Holiday Tips for Savvy Shoppers

Positive Planning

Adventures in Planning By Brandi Woodall, Positive Approach Events & Consulting

By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent

Here are some ideas for easing the budget without feeling like a grinch: Give A Priceless Gift: When you make a gift, you give of your time - the most valued gift of all. Make a “Gift of Time” certificate for a chore an older relative cannot easily do, or a trip to the park, or a slumber party for the kids. Think outside the gift box. Buy a single gift for the entire family, such as an entertainment basket filled with DVDs, microwave popcorn, and gift certificates to the movies. Consider giving an environmental excursion, such as kayaking or camping. Make edible gifts such as breads, cookies, or dry jar mixes, which the recipient can prepare later. Package them in reusable tins, baskets, jars, or decorative bags or boxes. Send e-mail holiday greeting cards. This saves money and the environment. Draw, design, and print your own cards, gift tags, and mailing labels from old cards or recycled paper. Holiday plants such as poinsettias, chrysanthemums and Christmas cactus make wonderful “green” gifts for any budget. Plants can be enjoyed long after the holiday season is over. Give local products like locally grown citrus, honey, or work from a local artist.

On entertainment: Trade and borrow outfits with your friends for new holiday attire. You may be able to give each other a little facelift this season, instead of you both heading to the store. Rather than cooking or catering for the entire dinner party, offer a potluck and invite everyone to bring a dish. This is great time to enjoy a gourmet coffee date instead of lunch or dinner out – less than $10. Make sure your Christmas lights aren’t coming on too early or staying on all night watch the energy bills right along with all the other money leaks! Most of all enjoy the spirit of giving and celebrating. Don’t get hindered trying to impress with an elaborate party or purchase the most expensive items on the market. Spending time with your loved ones and giving gifts from the heart are more valuable than gold!

Holiday Trivia for Fun 1) The real St. Nicholas was born in what modern-day country? A: Israel, B: Pakistan, C: Iraq, D: Turkey

4) What year was Santa's wife, Mrs. Claus, first introduced to the world? A: 1889, B: 1902, C: 1929, D: 1935

2) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created as a promotion for what department store? A: J.C. Penney, B: Montgomery Ward, C: Macy's, D: Nordstrom

5) Eggnog was first consumed in what U.S. city? A: Jamestown, Virginia, B: Provincetown, Massachusetts, C: Boston Massachusetts, D: New York, New York

3) In "The Twelve Days of Christmas", there are how many drummers drumming? A: six, B: eight, C: ten, D: twelve

Answers:

First, create an overall holiday spending limit. This should not only include gifts, but other things such as clothes, wrapping paper, special meals, and travel, if necessary. At the same time, look at the rest of your budget and estimate how much you can afford to spend without racking up debt. Keep track of what you actually spend and compare it against your budgeted amount. If you overspend in one area, you must reduce costs in another. If you have already gone over your budgeted amount, you still have many options without going into debt. This is supposed to be a joyous time; don’t let the temptation to overspend ruin your holidays and make you pay for months afterward.

As many of the Voice Magazine for Women readers know, I am an Independent Event Planner. Basically, that means I can plan events all over the region both for corporate clients and individuals. And now we’re adding something else to our list of offerings, a new event space! VENUE is located in Brandi Woodall downtown Johnson City, Tennessee in the historic King Centre. We’re the entire second floor as a matter of fact! When people ask how to get there, we simply say, “Come into the building, get on the elevator, and press 2.” The elevators actually open onto the space. Once inside, you’ll see almost 10,000 square feet of original hardwood. We were so amazed that a space of this size has been kept a secret for so many years. Imagine a space that you can tailor to your every event dream. From draping walls, to hanging rigs or lanterns, this is one neutral space that you can create a masterpiece in. And we haven’t even told you what the crowning jewel of this space is! VENUE offers two FULL walls of windows and exposed brick that overlook downtown Johnson City’s streetscape. If you’ve ever dreamed of loft living, or hosting an event in a cool, urban setting, then we have the space for you! Our motto is “One Space. Countless Possibilities”. And it’s so very true! But there’s even more! In addition to hosting private events, we’re also creating events for you to attend! That’s where the independent in me takes over! Recently we held live music, as well as a Halloween Party. Both events were ticketed and open to the public. Next on our list is New Year’s Eve! So if you haven’t made plans yet, keep us in mind. VENUE is located at 300 E. Main Street, Ste 200Johnson City, TN 37601. Visit us on the web at www.venuejc.com, and call (423)926-2693 to take advantage of our “Grand Opening” specials that will expire on 12-31-10.

The holiday season is upon us once again. Sure you have a holiday budget, but did you ever stop and add up all the sneaky hidden costs of the holidays, such as entertainment, new holiday attire, and Christmas greetings? The spirit of giving and celebrating has a strong pull on us, and it is a wonderful time to catch up with friends and family. We can still give and enjoy the holidays while spending less and even helping the environment along the way.

Christmas Cheese Ball How to Set a ʻSimpleʼ Dining Room Table Identify how many guests you will be having and it is always a good idea to sit people strategically. Husbands and wives together, but also make sure that everyone is in a position to get to know each other better if it is a "mixer" dinner party. Clean off table and add a linen table cloth. Place the plates down first. Main course plates in front. Salad plate up and to the right. Place napkins on left side of plate. Salad fork (smaller) on furthest outside left of plate. Add dinner fork to the right of that. On the right side of the plate, place knife, blade turned towards plate. Then place spoon(s) next to that. Dinner spoon first then soup spoons (if necessary) on the right of the dinner spoon. Place glasses on upper right hand side of seating and have the flower arrangement and candles in the middle of the table.

A family holiday favorite. We love this recipe, and could eat it more often, but save it for the holiday season and for neighborhood gifts to keep it a special holiday tradition. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do. 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 4 ounces Velveeta cheese 8 ounces Philadelphia cream cheese 4 ounces port wine cheese 1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 box Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal

Fresh pasta Gourmet ravioli Take & bake lasagna Pasta sauces Pesto

1. Soften cheeses. 2. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly by using hands and squeezing through fingers (fun!). 3. Form into three (3) equal balls or logs. 4. Crush approximately 2 cups of Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal by placing in large plastic ziploc bag, close, and use a rolling pin to crush to desired texture. 5. In a large bowl, gently roll balls or logs in Craklinʼ Oat Bran cereal. 6. Chill and serve with pretzels and crackers.

Steps for a Stress-Free Holiday Get active - Physical activity pumps up your feel-good endorphins and refocuses your mind on your body's movements. Meditate - During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. Laugh - When you start to laugh, it lightens your mental load and actually causes positive physical changes in your body. Laughter fires up and then cools down your stress response and increases your heart rate and blood pressure, producing a good, relaxed feeling. So read some jokes, tell some jokes, watch a comedy or hang out with your funny friends. Connect - Social contact is a good stress reliever because it can distract you, provide support, help you weather life's up and downs, so take a coffee break with a friend, email a relative, volunteer for a charitable group, or visit your place of worship.

IN HOME CARE SERVICES “Hands That Care” Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! • ELDERLY CARE • COMPANIONS • INVALID CARE • PRIVATE DUTY • HOMEMAKERS • HOME/HOSPITAL

Celebrating Over 25 Years!

Assert you - Learn to say no to some tasks or to delegate them. Accept that you can not do it all. Sleep - Stress often gives sleep the heave-ho. You have too much to do — and too much to think about — and your sleep suffers. If you have sleep troubles, make sure that you have a quiet, relaxing bedtime routine, listen to soothing music, put clocks away, and stick to a consistent schedule. Get musical - Listening to, singing with, or playing music is a good stress reliever because it provides a mental distraction, reduces muscle tension and decreases stress hormones. Crank up the volume and let your mind be absorbed by the music. And dance - it’s for the mind and the body! Read the ‘free’ local women’s magazine –Voice Magazine for women! Very relaxing!
