After its original publication in 1951, Those Devils in Baggy Pants sold one million copies, was a Reader’s Digest condensed book, and was translated into multiple languages. Now, years after being out of print, the hit best seller is being republished by a member of Carter’s own family—David Ross Fraley. How to Choose the Right Pair of Sunglasses A
ll sunglasses are not created equal. Quality sunglasses protect the eyes from UV rays, reduce eyestrain in bright conditions and protect the eyes from flying debris. Here’s how to find the right pair of sunglasses for you. • Check the UV rating. Sunglasses should block 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays. UV rays can contribute to cataracts and even destroy the retina, which is the lining at the back of the eyes. In addition, UV light can cause changes in the cells of the eyes that may produce discomfort or even lead to cancer. Make sure the label indicates that the sunglasses protect against UVA and UVB rays. • Wear large sunglasses. The more coverage from sunglasses the better. The American Optometric Association advises that oversized or wraparound sunglasses are best, as they can cut down on the UV rays entering the eye from the side. • Don’t be fooled by dark lenses. Dark lenses do not necessarily block more UV rays than light-colored lenses. It is important to look at the label to see the UV rating. • Select functional sunglasses. The sporting goods experts at REI state that certain sunglasses are specifically designed for certain activities. Sport sunglasses, for example are designed for running, biking and hiking. They’re lightweight and fit tightly so they stay on while exercising. Their frame and lens materials also may be more impact-resistant than casual sunglasses. Glacier glasses are sport sunglasses that protect the eyes from intense light at high altitudes and against reflections from snow. • Know the functions of polarized lenses. Polarization helps reduce glare coming off of reflective surfaces, such as water. Note that polarization will not offer more protection from the sun, but it makes engaging in certain activities more comfortable. • Recognize that the color of lenses also helps. In addition to polarization, the color of lenses can affect how much visible light reaches the eyes and affects clarity. Brown, gray and green are ideal for everyday use and most outdoor activities. Light colors like rose, yellow and amber are good in low to moderate light conditions. They can improve the visibility of objects and make surroundings seem brighter. Shop smart when selecting sunglasses to keep eyes healthy and comfortable. voicemagazineforwomen.com | March 2022 | 5
Key Components of 3 Popular Home Interior Styles
O
ne way to simplify interior design decisions is to choose a style. Interior design styles run the gamut from traditional to modern, and each style has its own unique look and feel. Though homeowners need not feel beholden to any particular item associated with a given style, three of the more popular styles, traditional, modern and farmhouse, each have certain key components that can ensure a home ends up with a look homeowners are aiming for. 1. Traditional — Homes with a traditional interior style give a formal yet welcoming feel. Many individuals associate crown molding and wainscotting with traditional interiors, so that’s something homeowners aiming for this style should keep in mind. Minimal or modern furniture pieces don’t fit with the traditional style, which tends to utilize period pieces made from real wood. 2. Modern — Modern interiors may differ depending on which style of modern homeowners are aiming for. Midcentury modern typically features unique furnishings that some might see as retro. However, many companies now offer updated takes on midcentury modern that call to mind a bygone era but
don’t make individuals feel as though they’re living in a museum. Urban modern is another popular modern style, and home interiors fashioned in this style tend to be light, airy and not crowded with furnishings. Calm, soft tones are a go-to with urban modern interiors, helping to create the serene settings many homeowners are hoping to create with this style. 3. Farmhouse — Farmhouse has become very popular in recent years. In fact, a recent survey from the interior design service Modsy found that farmhouse was the most popular design style in 26 states. Farmhouse is beloved for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is its association with a simpler lifestyle. The rustic charm of the countryside is never far from the mind when in a home with a farmhouse-inspired interior. Traditional farmhouse and modern farmhouse are different styles, but natural materials and bright colors, particularly white walls, are elements shared by both. Traditional, modern, and farmhouse are three popular home interior styles. Each has its own unique components, and homeowners can supplement their favored style as they see fit.

4 Popular Colors for 2022
H
ome design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022. • Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone ® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown. • Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms. • Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink. • Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety of rooms, which is one reason why it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

Celebrate the Arrival of Spring
pring is a season of rebirth in more ways than one. Spring is when certain animals emerge from hibernation, while many species lay eggs or give birth this time of year. Flowers and trees also bloom in spring, providing spectacular foliage and awe-inspiring color. People also may feel like they have a new lease on life as they shake away the doldrums of winter and embrace longer hours of sunlight and warmer temperatures. The arrival of spring is worthy of celebration, and these activities and ideas can be enjoyable ways to spend the first day of spring. • Spend time outdoors. One is never too old for a picnic in a park or a bike ride along the trails. Spending time outdoors is beneficial because it

exposes people to sunlight, which is a precursor to the development of vitamin D. Vitamin D affects muscles, joints and tissues. It also can affect mood. • Plant a tree. Honor the first day of spring, and Earth Day shortly thereafter, by planting trees. Trees provide habitats for wildlife, create shade, reduce air pollution by filtering the air, and produce oxygen. A sapling is a manageable tree to plant and something children can do as well. • Enjoy spring crafts. Grab an inexpensive canvas and paint a landscape that is in full bloom. Use quick-set plaster to create stepping stones embedded with mosaic glass pieces for color that can be added to the backyard. • Host a spring potluck. Put fresh spring vegetables and fruits on display. Options include artichokes, apricots, asparagus, carrots, dandelion greens, and radishes. Put together a pasta primavera, which essentially is a spring pasta dish laden with fresh vegetables. • Decorate with flowers. Bring fresh flowers indoors and put them on display in vases or table centerpieces. Cut stems on a 45-degree angle underwater to help flowers last longer. In addition, choose floral themed curtains and throw pillows to add some spring decor. • Create a water feature. The sound and sights of cascading water can be both relaxing and picturesque. A water feature can be something as simple as a small fountain or more elaborate like a koi pond. Spring is a time of year when people can enjoy seasonal activities that make the most of the warmer weather and blooming landscape.
The Dirt on Gardening By April Hensley
D
irt is the foundation from which almost all gardening happens. There are exceptions with hydroponics and aquatic plants, but the majority of green growing things bury their roots in soil. Whether it is cheerful flowers, gigantic trees, romantic rose bushes, or a field of juicy watermelons, soil provides the nutrients the plant needs along with sunshine and water. That’s why the soil you use for growing sometimes needs a little help. It can get pests, diseases, or become depleted of nutrients. Crop rotation is a vital part of the health of the soil. It helps to replenish nutrients and if there are any crop specific pests or diseases, they won’t have anything to infest or infect if you change what you plant in that area. Some soil needs to be amended before it can be planted. Grab a fistful of your dirt. Does it just fall apart when you release your grip on it? It’s sandy soil. Or does it feel wet and sticky? It’s clay. Both soil types need to be amended with compost. There are several more ways to improve your soil for better growing. • Vegetable plants and flowers in containers such as pots, buckets, and hanging baskets will quickly deplete the nutrients available in the soil. Add a little extra to the mix and try to fertilize lightly once a week. • Some flowers love acidic soil and some love alkaline. Use a soil ph test to determine what you will need to add, if anything, to your flower beds. • Trees and shrubs that are already established should be fertilized twice a year if healthy. For new planting, test the soil to see if any amendments are needed.
• No matter how great your dirt is, without sufficient water supply, your plants will dry up. Container plants need extra attention while plants in the ground need a little help during dry periods. • Fertilizer can be store bought or compost you created or bought. If buying compost from someone, sometimes it’s best to purchase in the fall and let sit for a month or more to make sure it is done composting. It can burn your plants if it’s not finished breaking down. • Look for plants that help each other grow. This is called companion planting. The most popular is known as the Three Sisters—where beans, corn, and squash are planted together. They use or provide different nutrients to the other plants.

Green Eggs and Ham:
A St. Patrick’s Day Treat Green Eggs and Ham
By Pam Blair
T
he beloved children’s book, Green Eggs and Ham, was the result of a bet between Dr. Seuss and his publisher, Bennett Cerf. The challenge was for Seuss to write a book using just 50 words—and not exceeding that limit. In the book, Sam-I-Am keeps offering a character a plate of green eggs and ham, which he refuses time after time, always declaring “I do not like green eggs and ham, Sam-I-Am!” Finally, the character agrees to try them and is surprised to learn he really does like green eggs and ham! Dr. Seuss won the bet made back in 1960, and the story of Green Eggs and Ham continues to warm the hearts of millions, young and old. We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, to honor an Irish tradition born of the legend that says wearing green will make one invisible to leprechauns. This mythical creature will pinch anyone he is able to see unless we are wearing green for protection. The tradition has extended to include eating or drinking something green for further protection, like having a green beer, drinking green margaritas and smoothies, or eating green vegetables, and cake with green frosting. On this St. Patrick’s Day, why not play it safe by making green eggs and ham? Like Dr. Seuss’s book, this recipe will become a family favorite and as Sam-I-Am encouraged, “Try them, try them!” You can change the ingredients or add whatever you like, using prosciutto instead of ham, or broccoli and green peppers instead of spinach. No matter how you choose to make them, you will soon be saying, “I do like green eggs and ham!” 10 | March 2022 | voicemagazineforwomen.com
Ingredients: 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 tbsp. butter 2 large shallots, finely chopped 1 10-oz. box or bag frozen chopped spinach, defrosted and liquid completely drained ½ cup heavy cream Salt and ground pepper Pinch of nutmeg 8 thin slices of ham 8 eggs ¼ cup grated Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and coat a nonstick muffin tin with cooking spray. 2. Warm the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat and add the shallots. Cook for several minutes until softened, then add the spinach and stir in the cream, a little salt and pepper, and nutmeg. Continue to cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. 3. Next, fold a slice of ham in half, and line each muffin cup with one slice of meat. Add a tbsp. of the cooked spinach mixture into each cup. Crack each egg in a small bowl first, and slide into muffin cup on top of spinach. Add a little salt and pepper to the top of each egg and sprinkle with ½ tsp. grated parmesan. 4. Bake in the oven until the eggs are set, about 15 minutes or longer if egg whites are not set. Let the eggs cool in the muffin cups for a few minutes before removing them. Serve and enjoy!

Fun Ways for Children to Participate in St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
I
n addition to paying homage to St. Patrick, the holiday is largely known for being one big party catering to the over-21 crowd. It’s common to find people raising pints throughout the day on St. Patrick’s Day. However, for those who want children to be a part of the festivities, there are plenty of entertaining ways to incorporate them into any celebration.
Attend a parade Parades are a common sight come St. Patrick’s Day, and they’re ideal activities for children. If your town or city is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day parade this year, make plans to attend with the children. Follow safety precautions, including remaining socially distant, when necessary, and watch the floats, pipers, colorfully clad characters, and other participants go by.
Serve child-friendly beverages For those hosting St. Patrick’s Day at home, be sure to have a variety of foods and beverages on hand, particularly ones that children can enjoy. Whip up your own concoction like a Leprechaun Punch that features lemon-lime soda, green food coloring and lime sherbet.
or other traditional clothing, also can be worn. Kids may have fun making masks or hats they can wear as well. St. Patrick’s Day is a fun time for people of all ages. The holiday can be made kid-friendly in a variety of ways.
Learn St. Patrick’s history Children may not realize that St. Patrick, even though he is the patron saint of Ireland, actually was born in Britain, according to National Geographic Kids. Also, he wasn’t always associated with the color green; he was first depicted wearing blue robes. These are just some of the facts adults and children can explore together.
Collect clovers St. Patrick used a three-leaf clover, or shamrock, to explain the basic tenets of Christianity. The three-leaf clover represented the Holy Trinity. If St. Patrick’s Day falls on a nice day, everyone can venture outside to collect shamrocks and hunt for the elusive four-leaf clover, which may bring good luck.
Get dressed up Children can have fun dressing up in all sorts of apparel. While green shirts are par for the course, kids also can don rugby or soccer shirts from their favorite Irish teams. Authentic Irish Aran wool sweaters and cardigans,

Heat oven to 400 F. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1⁄2-inch dice. Put them in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Set said pan over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Uncover, drop the heat to maintain a simmer, and cook until tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Heat the oil in an 11-inch sauté pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the onion and carrots and sauté just until they begin to take on color, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add the meat, salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 3 minutes. Sprinkle the meat with the flour, toss to coat, and continue to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, and thyme and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat to low, cover, and simmer slowly until the sauce is thickened slightly, 10 to 12 minutes. Meanwhile, combine the half-and-half and butter in a microwave-safe container and nuke until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash the potatoes then add the hot half-and-half mixture, as well as the salt and pepper. Mash to smoothness, then stir in the egg yolk. Add the corn and peas to the meat mixture and spread evenly in a 7-by-11-inch glass baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling over, and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Place on a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or just until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove to a cooking rack and let rest for at least 15 minutes before serving.

I
recently complimented a young hospital technician on her beautiful dark hair. Her response was, “It’s hair extensions.” I looked for a while and couldn’t see any evidence of added hair, so I said, “I can’t see that. It all looks like your hair.” She stopped what she was doing, raised her beautiful wavy hair, and showed me how she taped an additional hair piece underneath her original hair. She said she went to her beautician to have it done, and was due for a visit soon. “Wow,” I said, “I would never have known.” As I sat there and watched her, I thought about how much it takes to make your hair look thick and beautiful, so why not just say thank you? So I said that to her; she flushed a little and said, “Thank you.” I know how she feels; I sometimes have a hard time accepting compliments too. For example, when someone compliments an item of clothing or something, I find myself saying, “Oh, I got it at the store for a good price.”
14 | March 2022 | voicemagazineforwomen.com
Sometimes, when I try to compliment another woman on how pretty she looks because of weight loss she had and how great her clothes fit, she will often say, “Oh, no, I need to lose another 10 pounds.” If I say, “No, you look wonderful,” then the protests will continue. Why? It could be a fear of appearing arrogant or proud. We may doubt the unconditional nature of the compliment or have a feeling of low self-esteem or even shyness. However, compliments are healthy. A compliment is any sort of sincere appreciation of a trait in someone’s behavior or appearance. They make us feel good—both giving and receiving them. Compliments help us communicate that appreciation we feel toward one another. Sometimes, it may seem that most of our compliments are about how someone looks, especially on social media. We need someone to validate who we are or the way we behave. Come to think of it, when I compliment someone on their behavior or how they treat others; I usually get a sincere thank you. Yes, we want to hear that we look good but even more so, we want to hear that what we do in our lives, our homes, our work, and our world is of value. And so do the people in our lives because feeling valued and appreciated is a basic human need. When I compliment my grandchildren for helping or doing something without asking them to do it, they act more responsibly. When I praise my husband, he stands taller and glows a little. Compliments aren’t just for the receivers; they also benefit the giver. When we don’t accept a sincere compliment, it downplays ourselves, makes the giver feel bad, or dismisses the giver’s opinion. On the contrary when we accept a compliment, it boosts our self-confidence, shows we appreciate them, and improves our self-esteem. My children always look at me funny when I compliment strangers in the grocery store or people I meet along the way. However, being generous with giving sincere compliments helps us notice and appreciate what’s good and what we like in those around us. So, how can we accept those compliments that we are fortunate enough to receive in our lives? A sincere “Thank you” or “I appreciate your kind words” will do.

Cherry Blossoms Article and Photographs By Nancy Binder
I
n 1885 Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, the first female to be on the National Geographic Board of Directors, returned from her first trip to Japan and suggested to the U. S. Army Superintendent of the Office of Public Buildings and Grounds that Japanese cherry trees be planted along the reclaimed waterfront of the Potomac River. Her idea was turned down but that didn’t deter Ms. Scidmore. She continued to propose the idea to every new Superintendent for the next 24 years. In 1905 Ms. Scidmore hosted a cherry blossom viewing and tea party at a location where a few cherry trees had been planted. Among the guests was a noted botanist David Fairchild, the future son-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell. Dr. Fairchild was so enamored with their appearance that in 1906 he imported 1,000 cherry trees from the Yokohama Nursery in Japan and had them planted on his property in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

In 1907 the Fairchilds promoted planting Japanese flowering cherry trees on the avenues around Washington, DC. In 1908 Fairchild donated cherry tree saplings to every District of Columbia school to plant on Arbor Day. In 1909 Ms. Scidmore decided to raise the funds to buy flowering cherry trees and donate them to Washington, DC. On April 5, 1909 she wrote a letter to the new First Lady, Helen Herron Taft, informing her of the plans. The First Lady responded enthusiastically in two days and suggested that an avenue of cherry trees be planted. At that time, Dr. Jokichi Takamine, the Japanese chemist who discovered adrenaline, was in Washington with the Japanese consul to New York City. Takamine heard of the plan and asked Mrs. Taft if she would accept 2,000 Japanese cherry trees, which she gladly accepted. These trees arrived in Washington on January 6, 1910 but upon inspection it was discovered that the trees were infested with insects and nematodes. On January 28, 1910, to protect local growers President Taft ordered the trees to be destroyed. Dr. Takamine responded with another donation of 3,020 trees from the lineage of the cherry trees that were planted along the Arakawa River in Tokyo. These trees arrived in Washington on March 26, 1912 after an almost six weeks long journey from Tokyo via ship to Seattle and onto a railcar to Washington, DC. On March 27, 1912 First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador to the United States, planted the first two cherry trees on the north bank of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park. These two trees still stand at the end of 17th Street Southwest with a plaque commemorating the gift from the City of Tokyo to the City of Washington, DC. The U.S. government sent a gift of dogwood trees to the people of Japan in thanks for the cherry trees.
Masses of Cherry Blossoms From 1913 to 1920 1,800 more Japanese cherry trees were planted around the Tidal Basin. The remainder of the gift of trees were planted in East Potomac Park. In 1927 school children re-enacted the initial planting and this event is recognized as the first Cherry Blossom Festival. In 1934 District of Columbia Commissioners sponsored a 3 day celebration of the cherry blossoms. In 1935 the festival became a national event. In 1938 when the Jefferson Memorial was to be built, a group of women chained themselves to trees that were scheduled to be cut down to make way for the memorial. A very good compromise was reached that in exchange for the removal of the Jefferson Memorial trees more trees would be planted on the south side of the Tidal Basin. During World War II the trees were referred to as Oriental flowering cherry trees and the festival was discontinued until 1947. In 1952 Japan requested help with restoring cherry trees along the Arakawa River. The trees that had been there before the World War II were the parent stock to the trees donated to Washington, DC. The National Park Service sent young branches with buds that were ready for grafting. In 1965 3,800 more Yoshino cherry trees were gifted by Japan and accepted by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. These were planted on the grounds of the Washington Monument. In 1994 the Cherry Blossom Festival was expanded to two weeks. The festival now includes a parade, kite festival, petal porches, Sakura Matsuri—Japanese Street Festival, Anacostia River Festival and Petalpalooza. The dates of the 2022 National Cherry Blossom Festival are March 20 to April 17. Peak bloom date will be announced on March 1st. Peak bloom date is defined as the day when 70% of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms are open. It has occurred as early as March 15 (1990) and as late as April 18 (1958). Blossoms are open for several days. U. S. Army Band taking promotional photos was April 7. To really enjoy the blossoms and unofficial activities, we arrived at a parking area near the Tidal Basin at 5:30 am. Camera crews for TV stations, production crews for documentaries, and commercial crews were setting up in the dark. A martial arts group was practicing their routine before filming. The U. S. Army Band was preparing for early morning promotional photos on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. District of Columbia police officers on horseback were patrolling the park. The blossoms were gorgeous in the early morning sunlight. We were surrounded by them as we walked around the Tidal Basin, park, and Washington Monument taking in all of the activity and beauty of these special cherry trees. For more information go to nationalcherryblossomfestival.org. There is a webcam #BloomCam that provides 24/7 live real time views of the cherry trees along the Tidal Basin.

INCREASINGLY POPULAR BEAUTY TRENDS
F
ashion is fickle, and so are the techniques men and women rely on to look and feel great. Because trends change so often, it can be challenging to figure out which have staying power and which might be passing whims. Here are some of the trends to keep in mind for those who want to stay abreast of the latest in hair, makeup and skincare.
Simplistic, natural skin Women who do not like a heavily made up look may be glad to learn natural features and skin tones are in style. To this end, many women will be skipping heavy foundations in lieu of quality skin cleansers and moisturizers that let their natural skin shine. Combined with multitasking products like moisturizer with SPF, this means fewer products clogging up makeup cases and bathroom counters.
moment, and the mask market is expected to expand even further. Beauty retailer Superdrug has seen mask sales double. Masks are advantageous because they can target specific problems and provide noticeable results right from home. Masks that target crows feet or dry patches around the nose are already popular, and masks are even being developed for the chest, arms and breasts.

Natural tooth whitening If Amazon’s top-selling activated charcoal tooth whitener is any indication, more than 14,000 reviewers have touted the benefits of this natural material for getting their teeth pearly white again. Other manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon, offering alternatives to bleach-based tooth strips and gels that sometimes create sensitivity issues for people.
Sample boxes Don’t know which products to buy? Beauty retailers have gotten increasingly innovative by packaging together sample-sized items that customers can purchase or have shipped to their homes regularly on subscription. The price is minimal, and there’s no commitment to buy if the sample isn’t just right. Customers may even be eligible for discounts when buying the full-sized product.
Keep Seasonal Allergies In Check
T
here is much to look forward to when springs arrives. Daily hours of sunlight increase while temperatures continue to climb. Blooming flowers and leaves budding on trees also add some awe-inspiring color back into the landscape. Even though there’s much to enjoy about spring, one side effect of so much foliage in bloom is the return of seasonal spring allergies. Many people find they cannot enjoy the sunshine and balmy temperatures of spring because of seasonal allergies. Hayfever, or allergic rhinitis, is a common spring allergy. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology indicates allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. The Aerobiology Research Laboratories says allergens in the air across Canada have been rising in many cities over the last 15 years. While there is no cure for seasonal allergies, there are steps individuals can take to live with them more comfortably. • Stay indoors on dry, windy days. It’s better to go outside after it rains, which clears pollen from the air.
• The ACAAI urges individuals to modify indoor environments to keep allergens out. An HEPA filter in HVAC systems can better trap spores. • Consider vacations near the ocean or other bodies of water, as pollen counts tend to be lower in these areas. • Delegate lawn mowing and other tasks that involve stirring up allergens to someone else. If you must do gardening and landscaping, wear a face mask to filter out some allergens. • Close windows or doors when pollen counts are especially high. • Wash hair and clothes when coming indoors to rinse out allergens that would transfer to pillowcases or furniture. • Speak to an allergist who can recommend medications or other treatments that can improve seasonal allergies. Corticosteroids reduce inflammation and antihistamines can help reduce sneezing or itchy eyes. Seasonal allergies are a potential pitfall of the spring season. However, there are remedies that can help alleviate the suffering.

What is Endometriosis?
M
arch is Endometriosis Month. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, affects an estimated 2 to 10 percent of American women of childbearing age. The World Health Organization says endometriosis affects roughly 10 percent of the same age group across the globe. Endometriosis is a potentially painful condition that impacts quality of life and the ability to bear children. With endometriosis, tissue similar to that which normally lines the inside of the uterus—the endometrium—grows outside of the uterus. This wayward tissue can form on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and other parts of the pelvis, states the Mayo Clinic. The endometrial-like tissue also acts as endometrial tissue would. That means it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle, guided by the same hormones that affect normal endometrial tissue. Because this abnormal tissue cannot exit the body through the vagina during a menstrual period, it becomes trapped, irritating areas of the pelvis and eventually causing the formation of scar tissue and even organ adhesions. The most common symptom of endometriosis is pain in various areas of the body. That pain may manifest itself through: • Very painful menstrual cramps that get worse over time.
• Chronic pain in the lower back and pelvis. • Pain during or after intercourse. • Intestinal pain and painful bowel movements. In addition, the U.S. Office on Women’s Health says bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods, digestive problems and difficulty becoming pregnant are other potential indicators of endometriosis. Scar tissue formation, as well as the development of fibrous adhesions which can bind organs together, produces pain and other symptoms. Doctors are not sure what causes endometriosis, although it does run in some families. There are theories that immune system deficits may fail to recognize and destroy endometrial tissue found outside the uterus. During Cesarean sections or other abdominal surgeries, endometrial tissue could be picked up and moved by mistake, thereby contributing to endometriosis. Endometriosis tends to last as long as one’s menstrual years. Some women find relief from endometriosis after they go through menopause when hormones affecting endometrial tissue wane. In the interim, doctors may recommend certain hormone therapies or hormone inhibitors to reduce symptoms. Surgery to temporarily remove wayward endometrial-like tissue from the ovaries and pelvis may increase chances of a successful pregnancy. Endometriosis is a gynecological illness that can be painful and disrupt life. Prompt diagnosis and treatment can help women find relief.

12 FACTS About
Menopause
W
omen undergo two major biological stages in life, and each has profound effects on their bodies. The first is called menstruation and comes after the onset of puberty. At this point, young women are physically mature enough to have a child. Around 40 to 50 years later, that same woman’s fertile years will cease and she will no longer be able to reproduce. This stage is known as menopause. The approach of menopause can be a confusing time for women. Learning about menopause can help women make sense of the process. 1. A woman has entered menopause when she has not had a menstrual period for one year. 2. The average woman enters menopause in her late 40s to early 50s. The average age is 51, according to the North American Menopause Society. 3. Menopause does not happen suddenly. A woman goes through a period called perimenopause that can begin in her 30s or 40s, marked by falling levels of estrogen and progesterone. 4. Periods become less regular during perimenopause until they stop entirely. 5. Women who smoke tend to reach menopause earlier than non-smokers. 6. It’s not uncommon for a woman to think she has reached menopause, only to get a period again. Having a period means there is still a chance of getting pregnant. Perimenopausal women have one of the highest rates of unplanned pregnancies of any group. Women should continue to rely on contraceptives if they don’t want to get pregnant.
7. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) may get worse before menopause as hormone levels fluctuate. 8. Women prone to mood swings during PMS are more likely to suffer from mood swings during menopause. 9. Menopause symptoms range from mild to severe. Most women will experience some symptoms. Hot flashes are the most common, affecting up to 75 percent of people. Night sweats are hot flashes that occur at night. 10. A decline in estrogen production can affect the amount of calcium in a woman’s bones. This means there’s an increased risk for osteoporosis during menopause. 11. Hormone changes can contribute to weight gain. Women should focus on eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. 12. Women should speak to their doctors about the risk/reward of hormone replacement therapies for hot flashes and the prevention of bone loss. Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life. Getting the facts can make it easier to prepare for the coming changes.

8 Essentials for Aging Parents
W
By Cindy K. Sproles
e’ve traipsed through our parent’s homes through the years, never giving a second glance at the things around us. Perhaps when our children were small, we made sure grandparents had the electric outlets covered or barriers in front of stairs, but for the most part, their homes are second nature. As our parents age, the hazards in front of them inside their own homes never occur to them until a disaster happens. After all, our parents are the rock of the family. They are independent and strong, but as they age, reality hits. Things change. Chores go undone and what used to be a spotless home begins to look cluttered. Ideally, children and parents should take time early in adulthood to discuss their wishes about future care. The truth is, none of us want to admit to aging any sooner than necessary so many times, these conversations don’t happen until something serious comes along. Encourage this conversation, not only with your parents but also with your children. It’s necessary and important to the care of a senior as they age. Here are eight must-haves for aging parents. Walk through their home and see how many need to be put in place. Brighter lighting — Our parents come from an age of lamps with muted bulbs. Raised to conserve electricity, forty and sixty-watt bulbs were what they used. Homes were dimly lit. Seniors need good light to help them read and help them maneuver around their homes. Update your senior’s home lighting and cut trips and falls in half. Ramps and handrails — Many older homes, pre-1960s, are not up to current day building codes. Stairs leading up to the porch have no rails, or concrete is cracked and crumbling. Sidewalks may be broken or have sections missing, and steep inclines from driveways to the home make it difficult to get to and from vehicles. Unfortunately, installing ramps and handrails is not a cheap venture, but it should be prioritized. Check with the local Area on Aging office. Often there are lists of individuals, church groups, or companies that help with these projects either free of charge or at a significantly reduced rate. Update flooring — Again, not a cheap venture, but if your parent has old carpet in the home, it often bears wrinkles or worn and torn areas that can cause falls. Simply throwing a rug over a bad carpet only adds to the danger. Remove rugs, especially small foot rugs that spend the bulk of their time wadded

up by the door. 60% of falls recorded for seniors happen inside their homes, and 64 deaths out of every 100,000 falls are from the elderly. Far too many to be ignored. Handles for showers and tubs — This is almost a no-brainer. Every senior needs foot grips and handles in their tub to help steady their entrance and exit. Shower chairs for the shower and modified tub chairs are available so seniors can sit and swing their legs over the tub’s edge. Adding hand-held showerheads and readjusting the water heater temperature to 120 degrees or below also prevent burns. Widen doorways — Especially if a parent has a scooter, walker, or wheelchair. Remove doors where they may not be necessary to allow easy passage. Replace old faucets — This doesn’t seem like much, but old faucets break, leak, and even cause cuts. They may become rusted and difficult to shut off or adjust water temperatures. Consider scald-proof faucets that prevent sudden bursts of hot water when toilets are flushed. Seek out financial aid for home modifications — Local and state agencies specializing in the elderly can help locate financial assistance. Websites such as www.payingforseniorcare.com help direct families to places that assist with these needs. If your parent is a veteran, check the programs such as Aid and Attendance, Veterans disability compensation, and VA Care programs within your local community. There are hoops to jump through, but patience will bring the necessary assistance. In-home assistance — It is proven that the elderly do much better overall when they can remain at home. Check into in-home, non-medical companies for caregiver assistance to help ease the burden of family care. Yes, these companies are expensive, but hiring a company that provides workman’s compensation, liability insurance, and bonding for their employees far outweighs the cost when families are easily sued for injuries a caregiver might receive or should abuse or theft occur. Companies can guarantee a replacement caregiver should someone call out for illness. This assures families aren’t left in a lurch or that a senior won’t receive the care they need for the day. It’s a given that none of these options are inexpensive. Still, when families work together to make the necessary revisions and seek out essential assistance, the good outweighs the expense. One fall can land a senior in the hospital for weeks, including surgery, and leave families with a bill exceeding $100,000. Take time to prepare and revise. The outcome is so much better.

Beating Envy By Kelly McFadden
“Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.” Ecclesiastes 4:4 KJV Interpretation: “And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man’s envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” –Ecclesiastes 4:4
W
e live in a society that focuses on bigger and better. We want to outperform and outshine our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers, our teammates…anyone. We compare whose house is bigger, whose husband is more attentive, whose kids are more well-behaved, who has a nicer car, who is skinniest, who has the largest paycheck…jealousy hovers and can turn into malice. The Old Testament records a story of jealousy. It is the story of Joseph who received a brightly-colored robe from his father. Because of his father’s favor, the Bible says that Joseph’s brothers hated him and couldn’t say anything nice to him. In fact, their envy was so out of control, that one day they plotted to kill him. Joseph’s brothers ended up selling him to traders who took him to Egypt. No need to be jealous, problem solved. Joseph was gone. He could no longer be their father’s favorite. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, “I haven’t done anything that bad!” Maybe not, but jealousy plays out in a variety of ways when it is allowed to thrive.

Envy festered and caused Joseph’s brothers to first hate and then plan to get rid of him in order to get what they wanted…more of their father’s attention. People are often driven by envy. Instead of enjoying the blessings and the gifts we do have, the focus is placed on what we don’t have. We start looking towards others, wanting what they have: their vacation, their house, their family, or their job. Instead of being happy with what we’re given, we simply want to have as much as the next person. Envy starts out small and builds, so catch it quick before you get lost in it and lose control. Here are three steps you can take: 1. Acknowledge it. Ask the Lord to show you where you have envy in your life so you can start to let it go. 2. Apologize to God. God is the giver of all gifts. At the heart of envy is the lie that God owes you something. 3. Celebrate others. One of the best ways to beat envy is to celebrate with others when they succeed. The wise King Solomon understood that a life driven by envy is meaningless and amounts to chasing after the wind. May we too be given the wisdom we need to understand the dangers of envy and the strength to rid it from our lives. Source: www.homeword.com

9 Influential Women in World History W
omen have made a profound impact on world history, but their stories weren’t always told in great detail. From leading armies to breaking down medical barriers to heading nations, women have been at the forefront of historic events for millenia. This list of nine influential women is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to recognizing great women who made their mark throughout world history. • Artemisia I: Artemisia was the ruler of the city of Halicarnassus at the time of the Persian Wars (499-449 BCE). When Persian emperor Xerxes the Great went to war against Greece, Artemisia was the only woman among his commanders, and she led five ships to battle. • Golda Meir: A labor activist, politician and Zionist, Meir was the fourth prime minister of the state of Israel and second woman prime minister in the world. She saw the country through the turbulent period of the Yom Kippur War. • Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Attorney Ginsberg taught at Rutgers University Law School and then at Columbia University. Ginsburg was a staunch supporter of women’s civil liberties and gender equality. Ginsburg was named to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993, becoming the court’s second woman justice, as well as the first Jewish woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.
•
Charlotte Brontë: One of three famous literary sisters, Brontë contributed to the world by penning books that are still enjoyed as classics today. Her best known work is the novel “Jane Eyre,” which drew from her own experiences as a student and governess. • Rosa Parks: Often described as the “first lady of civil rights,” Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott and other movements to end racial segregation. • Benazir Bhutto: Bhutto was the first democratically elected woman to lead a Muslim country. She studied at Radcliffe College and Harvard University in the United States, and later at Oxford in the United Kingdom. Bhutto served two stints as prime minister of Pakistan. • Mother Teresa: From Yugoslavia, Mother Teresa devoted her life to religious vocation and serving the poor. She received a Nobel Peace Prize for her work and was canonised in 2016. • Dr. Anthonia Novello: Dr. Novello was the first woman and first Hispanic to serve as Surgeon General in the U.S. She also was a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commission Corps and Commissioner of Health for the State of New York. • Queen Elizabeth II: Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1952 and has held the title ever since. In 2015, she became the longest reigning British monarch in the history of the United Kingdom. Reflecting on women’s history reveals the many awe-inspiring women who have influenced the world.
