“Serving the community for over 31 years” Dear Friend, Voice of Asia very passionately takes this opportunity to thank the courageous nurses who took the unprecedented step to travel tens of thousands of miles, away from the security, safety and sanctity of their homes, leaving behind their beloved spouses and young babies in order to immigrate to the United States from various parts of India. These amazing nurses, who were predominately women, came to the United States during the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s These nurses were pioneers who meaningfully altered their lives and the lives of their loved ones in unquantifiable ways.
The Indian American Nurses Legacy Award (Honoring Indian Nurses who came to the United States between 1965-1975) The contributions of these nurses have gone largely unrecognized, and in some cases, even marginalized. No one but these nurses themselves knows the true extent and nature of the tremendous hardships they faced in the early years. These impressive women are the very embodiment of “Proverbs 31.” What I have learned from my observations is that even with the support of an intact nuclear family, life was challenging for these nurses. Yet, they persevered against insurmountable odds and thrived. There is a good possibility that people from South India, especially from the Malayalam speaking community, has a relationship or connection to a registered nurse in the US who came in the early years of 70’s. It could be through a mother, grandmother, mother in law, a sister, a sister in law or even a brother. The success of this event would not be possible without your support.
