OUSTON – An extraordinary camaraderie and fellowship was witnessed at the 7th Annual Eid Milan hosted by the Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston (IMAGH) where 500 guests gathered at the West Chase Marriot on Saturday, July 16 to rejoice and feel uplifted after an undeniably gloomy month of Ramadan that just passed.

IMAGH awarded India House with Community Service Award presented by Col. Raj Bhalla (2nd from lt) to Col. Vipin Kumar (3rd from lt) India House Executive Director. OUSTON- It was a picture perfect day at the India House on Saturday, July 16 with large gathering of grandparents with their bundles of joy, their grandkids. Annual Grandparents Day was hosted by the Indo-American Charity Foundation (IACF) partnered by Indian Senior Citizens Association (ISCA). It was filled by activities both for grandparents and their grandchildren. Face painting, Bingo, music and dance leading to a lunch was the day’s highlight.

“Kamala’s experience has taught her that if you’re going to give everybody a fair shot, you’ve got to take on the special interests that too often stand in the way of progress,” Obama said.

“This is an IACF’s initiative and organized for the 3rd year in a row to bring three generations to come together and spend time,” said Dr. Ramesh Cherivirala, event organizer and past president of IACF. India House supported the event by providing the space. Col. Vipin Kumar,

He added that Harris “fights for us.” Continued on page 9

The GOP’s backwards-looking agenda

W

hen Mitt Romney ran for the Republican presidential nomination four years ago, he carried a three-legged stool to signify the unity of the three traditional elements of the party: “economic conservatives, social conservatives and defense conservatives.” The GOP, he argued, must rest on a balance of these three, which made for a more or less comfortable peace behind his candidacy. Four years later, a disunified party has tossed away the stool. After a brief moment of nearchaos stoked by the squelching of an anti-Trump minority on the Republican National Convention floor Monday, the party formally adopted a platform that reflects the party’s accelerating ideological confusion — and its lurching away from the center of American politics.

The party embraced a startlingly backward-looking social agenda, much of it a reaction to the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. The party favors a constitutional amendment that would overturn the ruling, enabling states to ban same-sex unions once again. It proclaims that children should be raised by “a mother and father,” expressing disapproval of gays and lesbians as parents. It signals approval for the discredited practice of gay conversion therapy. It calls for the Bible to be taught in public schools. It supports allowing churches to organize politically while keeping their tax-exempt status. The party’s allegiance to tax cutting and deregulation remains. Among other things, the GOP would curtail a variety of environmental protections and

prevent a variety of species from being listed as endangered. It would abolish the Internal Revenue Service, a particularly silly bumper-sticker proposal. But Donald Trump’s takeover has moved the GOP toward isolationism, anti-trade populism and a concomitant ambivalence on essential economic freedoms. The platform says “we need better negotiated trade agreements that put America first” — which implies criticism of past trade deals that Republicans have traditionally defended and projects opposition to future trade pacts. The platform takes no firm stand on the North American Free Trade Agreement or the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This is a shocking turn for a party whose leadership prioritized fast-tracking the TPP after its 2014 midterm election victory.

nomic synergies between both. This point is strongly reinforced by the fact that trade was estimated at USD 72 Billion as of 2015. At the political level too, engagement has witnessed a steady rise. In October 2015, India hosted the India-Africa Forum Sum-

mit in New Delhi, where representatives from all 54 African countries and 40 heads of state and government attended this mega event-cum-interaction. While the India-Africa relationship has witnessed significant positives, there have been a number of hiccups. There were strong reactions from a number of African envoys in the aftermath of the murder of a Congolese citizen, Masonda Ketada Oliver who was bludgeoned to death in New Delhi. This was followed by attacks on a Nige-

Filling out the picture, the platform adopts Mr. Trump’s call to build a wall on the U.S.Mexico border, which would be an expensive (if ineffective) symbol of America shutting out the outside world. Where Republicans just four years ago proclaimed that they “will lift the torch of freedom and democracy to inspire all those who would be free,” Trump forces nixed a line from this year’s platform that called for arming Ukraine against Russian aggression. The net result is a platform that is more reactionary than visionary, with an emphasis on social matters that is out of step with American public opinion and an isolationist turn that reeks of counterproductive nativism. Party platforms, it is often said, are irrelevant. In this case, the nation can only hope so.

rian student in Hyderabad. It is estimated that there are 25,000 African students in private and government universities in India. Notably, one of the important decisions taken during the India-Africa Forum Summit in October 2015 was to increase the number of scholarships provided to students. The murder and attacks on Africans residing in India caused immense damage to the relationship, with most African envoys even threatening to boycott the Africa Day celebrations. India needs to improve its implementation of projects and use its soft power effectively in Africa, mere goodwill by itself is not enough.

THE STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI

Gandhi invites untouchable family in ashram Gandhi went to Rajkot and Porbandar to meet his relatives and then went on to Shantiniketan. There Gandhi met poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore for the first time, as well as C. F. Andrews. Andrews, who came to India as an Anglican priest in 1904, was one of the very few people respected both within Indian nationalist circles and official British ones. A close friend of Gandhi, Tagore and other eminent Indians of the time, Andrews never ceased to champion the Indian cause for independence and, in a broader sense, the cause of all downtrodden peoples against oppression. Now read on. .. During his short stay at Santiniketan Gandhi heard the sad news that Gokhale had passed away. He immediately left for Poona, C. F. Andrews accompanying him as far as Burdwan. “Do you think,” Andrews asked Gandhi, “that a time will come for satyagraha in India? If so, how soon will it be?” “It is difficult to say,” replied Gandhi. “For one year I am to do nothing. Gokhale made me promise that I would travel in India for one year to gain experience, and that I would express no opinion until I had finished this period of probation. So I do not think there will be any occasion for satyagraha for five years.” After attending the shraddha ceremonies of Gokhale, Gandhi met the leaders of the Servants of India Society. Out of respect for Gokhale he would have joined the Society, but there was opposition from a certain sections of the members. Gandhi visited Rangoon, in Burma, for a short period and on his return he went to Hardwar during the time of the Kumbha Mela. About 1.7 million people attended the mela. Volunteer corps from different organizations had gone to Hardwar to be of service to the big crowds that were flowing in. Gandhi was invited to go there with the Phoenix party with the Phoenix party to help the volunteers. The Phoenix group went

“And then Gandhi came. He was like a powerful current of fresh air that made us stretch ourselves and take deep breaths, like a beam of light that pierced the darkness and removed the scales from our eyes, like a whirlwind that upset many things, but most of all the working of people’s minds.” — Jawaharlal Nehru there and Gandhi joined them. Gandhi was pained at the many happenings and shortcomings at the great religious fair. There was corruption, there was cheating and many other unsocial activities. Scant care was taken about sanitary arrangements. All this made Gandhi, feel very sad. He thought a great deal about the problem of how to improve the Indian character. In May 1915 an ashram was established in a village near Ahmedabad. The city was an ancient centre of handloom weaving and Gandhi thought the place was suited for the revival of the cottage industry of hand-spinning. Gandhi named the new institution Satyagraha Ashram. “Our creed is devotion to truth, and our business is the search for and insistence on truth,” he said. A simple uniform style of clothing was worn by all who were there. They took their food together in a common kitchen and strove to live as one family. Gandhi told the members: “If you want to serve the people, it is essential to observe the vows of truth, ahimsa, celibacy, non-stealing, non-possession, and control of the palate.” One day Gandhi said to members of the ashram, “I have received an application from an untouchable family who want to join us here. I am replying to them that they are welcome.” This created quite a stir. An untouchable family in our

But the patrons of the ashram did not like the idea and they stopped funding the ashram. The ashram was suddenly faced with an acute financial crisis, but help came unexpectedly. A rich man came to the ashram and gave Gandhi Rs. 13,000 and urged him to continue running the ashram. In February 1916, Gandhi was invited to speak at the laying of the foundation-stone of the Banaras Hindu University. The Viceroy and many of the most important people of India were there. Gandhi, clad in a Kathiawadi long coat and a turban, rose to speak. The police arrangements, and also the pomp and luxury around him, hurt him deeply. Turning to the audience he said, “I want to think audibly and speak without reserve. His first words froze the audience. “It is a matter of deep humiliation and shame for us,” he said, “that I am compelled this evening under the shadow of this great college, in this sacred city, to address my countrymen in a language that is foreign to me.” It was a bombshell. Nobody had ever dared to speak against the English language. The British officers, then friends, and the important Indians who had gathered there were seething in anger. But Gandhi went on, “His Highness the Maharaja who presided yesterday over our deliberations spoke about the poverty of India. But what did we witness? A most gorgeous show, an exhibition of jewellery... There is no salvation for India unless you strip yourselves of this jewellery and hold it in trust for your countrymen in India.” Gandhi gave a long speech, covering many topics. His speech was full of outspoken criticism. Mrs. Annie Besant, who was one of the organizers of the function, was horrified and urged Gandhi to sit down. But Gandhi went on. Some people went red with rage, but others listened to Gandhi with great

interest. “Here at last is a man telling the truth,” they thought. “He is the man to raise India from the mire.” They applauded him and shouted joyfully. Gandhi turned to them and said, “No amount of speeches will ever make us fit for self-government. It is only our conduct that will make us deserve it. Gandhi told them that they should all be the kind of people able to take up the work of selfgovernment. Finally, Gandhi, the man who three times had supported the British in their war efforts, said, “If I found it necessary for the salvation of

India that the English should retire, that they should be driven out, I would not hesitate to declare that they would have to go, and I hope I would be prepared to die in defence of that belief.” The people were amazed at Gandhi’s frankness. It was Gandhi’s first great political speech in India. Years later, Jawaharlal Nehru described what the coming of Gandhi meant to the Indian people. He said, “We seemed to be helpless in the grip of some allpowerful monster; our limbs were paralysed, our minds deadened. What could we do? How

could we pull India out of this quagmire of poverty and defeatism which sucked her in... “And then Gandhi came. He was like a powerful current of fresh air that made us stretch ourselves and take deep breaths, like a beam of light that pierced the darkness and removed the scales from our eyes, like a whirlwind that upset many things, but most of all the working of people’s minds.’ Several conferences demanding home rule were held in India during the latter half of 1916. They marked a new wave of political life under the leadership of Tilak, Mrs. Besant, and Jinnah. - To be continued..

Churches hold Vacation Bible School

Documentary Mat Release

by Koshy Thomas

July 28th is World Hepatitis Day: Get Tested for Hepatitis B

T

ypically, July is the month for Vacation Bible School (VBS). When you drive around you can see signs in front of church buildings indication the time and date of VBS.

This year , VBS’s theme ‘Deep Sea Discovery” is being observed around the world. Local Houston’s churches had their VBS during July 7, 8 and 9. There are over two dozen churches from the Southern state of Kerala alone. Some large churches costing millions of dollars others that are smaller like the ones seen in Sugar Land, Stafford, Missouri City and Pearland. Mar Thoma Chuirch has two churches, one in Stafford and another in Houston. Both are mega churches. This year the number of children that attended in the Immanuel church was surprisingly high, around 300 children.

VBS Vacation Bible School} is a program many local churches offer for kids to learn about religion, sing songs, play games, do crafts, meet other kids, and just have fun. Most of them are 4-5 days long, for just a few hours each day, and many are either free or very low cost.

Church members singing during the VBS.

VBS is typically for kids Kindergarten through 5th grade, but some churches

include preschool age kids and/or mentoring opportunities for preteens and teens as

well. Trinity will conduct their VBS during July 28, 29 and

30. This will help children from both churches to participate.

In July, medical experts and community advocates in the United States and across the globe will join forces to mark World Hepatitis Day, and to raise awareness of a disease that affects as many as two million Americans: chronic hepatitis B. While anyone can contract hepatitis B (hep B), people of Asian descent bear the heaviest burden, representing nearly three-quarters of individuals affected worldwide. Here in the United States, up to one million Asian Americans have hep B – that’s half of all cases in the country. But what exactly is hep B, and why is it such a threat to our community? Hep B is caused by a virus that is transmitted via blood and other bodily fluids. Hep B can be managed, and the disease can be prevented – but if left untreated, the complications of hep B can potentially be life threatening. First-generation Asian Americans from China, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, India and the Philippines are at particularly high risk for hep B due to low rates of infant vaccination against the disease in these countries. In fact, most Asian Americans who have hep B contracted it during childbirth from their mothers. That’s why tragically, in this community, it is common to see multiple members of the same family affected by hep B. Despite its high incidence rate in Asian communities, as many as two out of three Asian Americans who have chronic hep B

do not know they are infected. That is because hep B does not always cause noticeable symptoms. Chronic hep B can slowly damage the liver over time, increasing the risk of serious liver disease. As Asian immigrants are projected to be the largest immigrant population in the country over the next 40 years, the need to call attention to this so-called “silent” disease is more critical than ever. The good news is that hep B can easily be detected with a quick and simple blood test. Everyone should talk to their doctor about getting tested – especially if you are of Asian descent. If you test negative for hep B, there is a safe and effective vaccine that can prevent hep B, and it is widely available in the United States. If you test positive for hep B, talk to your doctor about whether treatment would be appropriate for you. Regular screenings to monitor the health of your liver are very important, and there are treatments that may potentially lower the amount of virus and decrease the risk of further damage to the liver – some are just one pill a day. So on World Hepatitis Day on July 28th, join millions of Asians here in the United States and around the globe and get tested for hepatitis B. Visit hepBsmart.com for information about chronic hepatitis B, and to learn about an award-nominated documentary film short BE ABOUT IT, sponsored by Gilead Sciences.

YOUR IMMIGRATION LAWYER

The People’s Lawyer

Answers to your Immigration Questions by Sharlene Sharmila Richards, Immigration Lawyer Email at srichardslaw@aol.com

www.peopleslawyer.net Richard M. Alderman Interim Dean of the Law Center

Q. I am a college student and I just moved out of my apartment. I paid my rent, gave proper notice and left it cleaner than when I moved in. I have been told this landlord does not return security deposits. How long do I have to wait to find out if mine is being returned? A. First, be sure to give your landlord a forwarding address. The law requires you provide a forwarding address to your landlord. Assuming that you were current in your rent, gave your landlord proper notice and a forwarding address, the Texas security deposit law offers you substantial protection. Under this law, a landlord must either return your security deposit or send you written notice why it is not being returned, within thirty days after you move out. If the landlord does not act within this time period, the law presumes he is acting in bad faith. If you went to justice court to collect, you could be entitled to up to three times the deposit plus an additional $100. I also should point out that a landlord cannot just arbitrarily withhold money from your deposit. The landlord can withhold only for damages caused by a breach of the terms of the lease, and he cannot withhold for damage caused by “ordinary wear and tear. If you don’t hear

from your landlord within the thirty days limit, let him know you know your legal rights. My guess is that will get you back your deposit. And while we are talking about security deposits, read the next letter to avoid a real problem. Q. I gave my landlord proper notice I am moving out at the end of next month. I have been told that it can be difficult to get back a security deposit. Doesn’t it make sense for me to withhold the last month’s rent and tell the landlord to use my security deposit to cover the rent? A. It makes sense, until you know the law. As discussed above, under the law, a landlord who wrongfully withholds a tenant’s security deposit may be liable for three times the deposit, plus an additional $100. The law, however, is a two way street. It also provides that a tenant who doesn’t pay the last month’s rent, expecting the landlord to use the security deposit, can owe the landlord three times the amount of the rent, plus another $100. In other words, withholding the deposit could cost you a substantial sum of money. I suggest you pay the rent on time, and if the landlord doesn’t return the security deposit, take advantage of the Texas Security Deposit Law. Q. I rented an apartment for my daughter. Shortly after she moved in, her boyfriend moved in with her. They have

now split up, but he will not move out. How do I get him to move? My daughter no longer wants to live in the apartment. How do I get out of the lease? A. Looks like today is landlord-tenant day. I will answer your second question first. You cannot get out of your lease unless the lease has a clause permitting you to terminate it early. The only way to terminate the lease is with the landlord’s consent. I suggest you speak with landlord and see what he says. If he says you may not terminate, you may be able to negotiate an agreement to terminate the lease in exchange for a payment, for example, one or two months’ rent. To remove the exboyfriend, you need to either get him to voluntarily move out or evict him. If he has been living there while you are paying the rent, he is probably considered a tenant. You should be able to evict him with one-day notice. Give him notice to move out and then file what is called an FED (forcible entry and detainer) action in the local justice court. Hopefully, he will move once he understands that he can be evicted. Do you want to know more about your legal rights? Visit my website, www.peopleslawyer.net

A: Yes, you do have to continue the type of work in your field of expertise even though it is not required that you perform services requiring a person of O-1 calibre. Q: What do I need to prove that I have ‘extraordinary ability’ in my field? A: USCIS has laid down several criteria to evaluate extraordinary ability in the field of sciences, arts, education, business or athletics. For O1-A visa, the individual may qualify if he or she is a recipient of a Nobel Prize or other awards of international caliber OR demonstrate at least three of the following criteria: receipt of nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards for excellence in the field of endeavor; membership in associations in the field of extraordinary ability which require outstanding achievement for memberships, as judged by national or international experts in that field; published material in professional or major trade publications, newspapers, or other major media about the individual’s work in the field of endeavor; authorship of scholarly articles in professional journals or other major media in the field of endeavor; high salary or remuneration for services as evidenced by contracts or other reliable evidence; participation on a panel, or individually as a judge of the work of others in the same field or in a field of specialization allied to that field for which the classification is sought and employment in a critical or essential capacity for organizations and establishments that have a distinguished reputation. For O-1B, the beneficiary must have received or been nominated for a significant national or international award or prize in the applicable filed such as an Academy Award, Emmy, Grammy or Director’s Guild Award OR provide evidence of at least three of the following criteria: performed and will perform services as a lead or starring participant in productions or events with distinguished reputation; achieved national or international recognition for achievements; performed and will perform in a lead or critical role for organizations and establishments with distinguished reputation; a record of major commercial or critically acclaimed suc-

cesses as shown by indicators such as title, rating or standing in the field, box office receipts etc; received significant recognition for achievements from organizations, critics, government agencies etc; and command of a high salary or other substantial remuneration for work related in the field as shown by contracts or other reliable evidence. If these criteria do not readily apply to the O-1 potential visa beneficiary, then comparable evidence can be submitted to show that the individual possesses the requisite extraordinary ability. Q: I have J-1 visa right now. Can I apply to change my status to O-1 visa? A: You can apply for O visa. However, you can only get the O-1 visa from the US consulate abroad. Q: What possible options are there for permanent residence for O visa holders? A: O-1 Visa holders can apply to adjust status to permanent residents. There are various options to consider such as EB1A (Extraordinary Ability); EB-1B (Outstanding Researcher or Professor) and NIW (National Interest Waiver – without Labor Certification).

“The dastards that blow themselves up are not doing because they will be rewarded with 70 virgins in heaven…. I think they do it because they are sickos and have no love for life. And I hope they roast in hell for eternity.” The IMAGH has been working tirelessly towards their mission to foster amenity across cultures, communities and religions. Since its inception seven years ago IMAGH, parent organization fostered two others: Club 65 and SAYA and together they have 300 members in all. IMAGH’s future plan is to build Seniors Village for the South Asian Community.

Latafath Hussain honors father and son Asif Dakri and Musa Dakri, founder of Wallis State Bank .

Welcoming the gathering, Event Chair Fatima Mawji, a highly respected community worker, spoke of the significance of Id al-Fitr, the day that marks the end of fasting and subsequently the end of the holy month of Ramadan after which follows celebration. Her message was to maintain a balance between faith and worldly obligations. “At this time of global unrest, let us also offer a prayer for peace, safety and security of those living in areas of conflict and instability.” she expressed. The event Co-Chairs

were Dr. Yunus Langha and Munir Ibrahim. Chief Guest Congressman Al Green was given a rousing welcome as he was introduced by Karun Sreerama, president of Indo-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC). His message was ‘unity without uniformity,’ and the power in diversity. Congressman presented a Congressional Certificate and lauded IMAGH’s efforts to promote peace and harmony in the communities. Stressed on the need for such a project he said, “Our last goal of going back

evades us.” “When we go back to India it does not feel the same, life is here in the US,” he said. Paru McGuire, president of Club 65 spoke of the Club’s activities and initiatives. Mohammed Khan, president, South Asian Youth Alliance (SAYA) gave a report on SAYA’s activities and progress. The evening program included a variety of entertainment that had glam, music, and message. A delight skit “The Price of Miracle” written and directed by Fatehali Chatur touched the audience with its profound message. A child’s quest to buy a miracle to save her brother with one dollar and 11 cents was depicted brilliantly by Zenab Sabir. How she finds the right person at the right time and place speaks of the goodness that still lives in many among us. Eid Milan was an evening of joyous moods, messages and meals. The India-US Energy Dialogue was launched in 2005 to promote increased trade and investment in the energy sector, through identification of further areas of co-operation and collaboration, while actively working with both the public and private sectors. The cooperation on oil and gas is among one of the six work streams that are working under the aegis of India-US Energy Dialogue. Over the last decade, several areas of interest for cooperation in the field of oil and gas have been identified such as technology for production from marginal fields, shale structures, development of gas pipeline network and improving refinery efficiency etc. During the meeting with US Energy Secretary, the two Ministers appreciated the regular meetings of officials and experts from both sides for continued progress and cooperation in various verticals of energy sector. 4. It is worth noting that GAIL has

contracted for import of LNG from the US to the tune of 5.8 MMT per year from end 2017. Indian companies have also invested in shale oil and gas projects in the US, i.e. GAIL has 20% equity in Eagle Ford basin; IOC and OIL have 10% equity in Niobrara basin). 5. India Festival at Discovery Green – Greater Houston Rath Yatra 2016

H

OUSTON - Amid a swelling crowd of over five thousand, cries of “Jai Jagannath!” and “Hare Krishna!” rang through the streets of Downtown Houston during the 4th Annual Greater Houston Rath Yatra 2016. Star Plus presented Festival of India at Discovery Green on a warm, breezy summer evening Saturday July 9th 6-10 PM, along with Tara Energy and Mercedes Benz of Sugar Land.

Yoga Demostrations. Next came the unique “Tablatronics” session - a fusion of traditional, electronic music by DJ Masti mixed with Tablas beats by maestro Rishabh Nayak.

Kabita suffered from right-sided paralysis, but was determined to visit the original ancient Puri Rath Yatra. As they approached the chariots in the procession, magically Kabita was able to climb one of the chariots – by herself – and felt the feeling return to her right side.

“Every year, increasing numbers of mainstream Houstonians enjoy this annual tradition commemorating Lord Jagannath’ s summer vacation with elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra from the main Jagannath Temple in Puri, India to nearby Gundicha Mandir.” beamed key organizer and SKAI Foundation founder Dr. Surya Sahoo.

Almost immediately her paralysis was cured and she was able to walk and function normally again! “We wanted to recreate the festival here in downtown Houston and offer everyone to experience the Lord of the Universe’s divine blessing,” said Kabita.

Sahoo, had a vision to bring this festival to Houston four years ago when he and his wife, Kabita, experienced a miracle.

Too Many Lives Lost By Mayor Sylvester Turner I’ve been unable to sleep. Too many lives have been taken, too many families destroyed. This is a difficult time in our nation’s history. There is pain, hurt and anger all around. Though the recent shootings did not take place in Houston, we are not that far removed. There has been progress on the divide between law enforcement and those they serve and protect since I was a young black kid, but this inexcusable violence on both sides indicates we have a very long way to go. Thanks to the global social media village we live in, society as a whole is only now beginning to acknowledge the severity of the problem. Acknowledgment is the first step. Houston has not experienced the same kind of violence and uprisings as other cities. We like to say it is because Houston is different. Our diversity does make us more accepting of that which is different. On the other hand, I worry that we may have just been lucky. Regardless of why it has not happened here, we are working hard to get ahead of the problem before a situation causes Houstonians to react contrary to what we expect. We cannot hold an entire group responsible for the actions of individuals. If an African-American, Hispanic, Anglo or Asian commits an act of violence against someone, we cannot blame the entire group. The same would apply to Muslims or Baptists. We also cannot blame all of law enforcement for the wrongful actions of a police officer. That would be wrong. Each individual must be held accountable for his or her actions. Houston has taken steps to enhance trust between law enforcement and the community. Earlier this year, Houston became the largest city to begin deployment of body cameras for all of our uniformed officers. This is another step; it is not the answer. HPD is also making strides in the area of training. And, the police chief meets regularly with ethnically and culturally diverse community, religious, academic and business leaders, to address issues and concerns impacting their respective communities and connect them with the appropriate contacts within HPD to help resolve their issues. Yes, Houston is different due to its diversity, but diversity means nothing if we are separate, segregated and apart. Now more than ever we need to pull together and use our differences to gain understanding and find workable solutions to this national emergency. The summer of 2016 cannot continue on the bloody track we’ve witnessed recently. I invite all leaders to join me at the table to work on this. If there is any city that can lead the way in getting it right, it is Houston!

wo sets of images have haunted me these last few days. One is a series of photos of people splashing bucketloads of water to wash away blood from the streets of Kashmir, where Indian forces have shot dead at least 45 people since 9 July. Thousands came out to protest and mourn the death of a rebel leader who was killed in an encounter with the Indian army and police. The other set of images is that of scores of young men with bandages on their eyes, before or after undergoing surgery to remove tiny steel pellets from their retinas. Indian forces deployed in Kashmir now routinely use pellet guns to stymie roadside demonstrations. The first image is of something I have witnessed nearly all my life. The Indian troops and state police who enforce India’s rule over Kashmir have been shooting at Kashmiri protesters for as long as there have been protests. And that is a long, long time: 27 years if you count from the start of the armed and popular uprising against India in 1989; 70 if you chart the history of the subcontinent from 1947 when Kashmir was left unresolved as the British departed; and more than eight decades if you go back to July 1931, when the then king’s troops killed 22 protesters. The second set of images is relatively new, as it’s the fruit of “non-lethal” weapons introduced in Kashmir in 2010. But the pictures haunt you nonetheless, as you peer into the bloodied, plum-sized eyes of those who suspect they may never see again. Such is the ferocity of the response of the Indian military occupation to the latest uprising that nearly 2,000 people suffered grievous or moderate injuries in just two days. In some kind of revanchist frenzy, paramilitaries attacked ambulances, shattered windows and cut off intravenous drips. The government of India and its loyalist representatives have clamped down on communications, social media and civil liberties; there is a near-total curfew everywhere. Phones don’t ring in south Kashmir, where most of the killings took place, and the internet is mostly blocked. A friend who’s visiting Kashmir reported that the “gravely ill can’t get to hospitals and can’t find medicines”. In short,

Kabali, the star’s latest movie, will be released in some 12,000 screens. One of Asia’s highest paid actors, Rajinikanth is considered one of the most bankable stars in India.

A Kashmiri youth with an eye injury sustained after he was hit by pellets fired by Indian security forces during a protest in Srinagar. (Photo: Tauseef Mustafa/AFP/Getty Images) yet another crushing siege in the decades-long relay of sieges. The world doesn’t need to know. India is a democracy. In its intransigence over Kashmir, the Indian state has, among other things, waged a narrative war, in which it tells itself and its citizens via servile media, that there is no dispute, that it’s an internal matter – and whatever troubles there are in the idyllic valley are the work of jihadis from Pakistan. This gives the state easy demons to portray and then slay. The Indian state now appears to believe its own fantasies, which it acts out by shooting its way out of a crisis every time Kashmiris voice their anger or political demands. It’s as though India must perform rituals of brutal violence on the Kashmiri body to keep it tamed. In 2008, 60 people were shot when Kashmiris protested at the grant of hundreds of acres of land to a temple trust, because they believed this was an Indian attempt to change the demographic of their Muslimmajority region. In 2009, protests raged for weeks after the rape and murder of two female family members from Shopian in northern Kashmir was dismissed by the authorities as a drowning. In 2010, 120 people, including teenagers, were butchered on the streets. Hundreds of families were devastated, gifted eternal grief by a draconian state. Not one member of the armed forces was charged, let alone convicted, for those killings. And that’s precisely why the soldiers kill again and again. That summer, when scores of adolescents were slain in the alleys, people gasped at the sheer scale of mayhem, but some also believed it might not happen again. It’s too much, I heard said. Policymakers in Kashmir and Delhi then deliberated

Indian American California Attorney General Kamala Harris endorsed... Continued from page 1 The dual endorsements represent a political coup for the Indian American candidate, who faces fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez, a 10-term congresswoman, in November.

But they are not a surprise. While Obama occasionally wades into state-level politics, Harris and the president are longtime friends. In 2013, Obama apologized to her after telling a group of wealthy donors in Silicon Valley that she is the “best-looking attorney general.” Biden said the Senate “needs people like her — leaders who will always fight to make a difference and who never forget where they come from.” Sanchez’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Obama is popular in the Democratic-leaning state, and his involvement could provide a boost for Harris in a race that represents a historic first in California — two minority women, both Democrats, in a runoff to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer. The matchup marks the first time since voters started electing senators a century ago that

Republicans will be absent from California’s general election ballot for the Senate. Under California election rules, only two candidates — the top vote-getters — advance to the November election, regardless of party affiliation. Harris entered the race last year and quickly established herself as the front-runner for the seat, leading in fundraising and polls. She has been endorsed by the state Democratic Party and has a long list of prominent supporters, including Gov. Jerry Brown and Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren. If elected this fall, Harris, the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, would set historical marks. She would become the first Indian American woman to be elected to the Senate. Sanchez, if elected, could become one of the first Latinas to hold a U.S. Senate seat. Catherine Cortez Masto, who is also Hispanic, is the Democratic candidate for outgoing Sen. Harry Reid’s seat in Nevada. As fellow Democrats, Harris and Sanchez hold similar positions on many issues, including abortion rights and immigration reform.

upon what kind of weapon to deploy on a people the majority of whom quite simply don’t want to be with India. They never have. The state came up with something that might thwart and injure protesters, but not kill them. A buckshot gun, a pellet grenade, a “nonlethal weapon”, we were told.

FRIDAY, July 22, 2016

Even before its release, Kabali, a gangster drama, has raked in some $30m (£20m) in film rights sales. It will also be dubbed in Telugu, Hindi and The lexicon of conflict in a place such as Kashmir engenders normalisation of even the most ghastly thing. It felt to me then that many were relieved that Kashmir’s young would no longer face full-size deathly bullets, but tinier steel pellets instead. At least they won’t die, it was said.

In Chennai and Bangalore, some companies have declared a holiday on Friday and given their employees free tickets for the film. One firm said it had declared a holiday to “avoid piled up leave requests to the HR department”. A Bangalore-based company said it did the same to “avoid sick leaves, mobile switch offs and mass bunks”. Also budget airline Air Asia has laid on a special Kabali flight from Bangalore to Chennai, featuring Rajinikanth’s faOver the last week, doctors in Kashmir have performed about 150 eye surgeries to try to remove pellets from retinas. TIMELINE: How Turkey’s military coup failed By Sarah El Deeb, Dominique Soguel and Suzan Fraser  STANBUL — Turkish officials say an attempted coup by a segment of the military over the weekend was put down in about 10-12 hours. At least 260 people were killed, and 1,400 wounded in violence that rattled the country’s two major cities. Bombs hit the parliament and other state buildings, tanks drove over civilians and there was an attempted assassination of the country’s strongman, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

I

Here is what is known about how it unfolded, beginning Friday, and why it failed. FRIDAY AFTERNOON Around 4 p.m. Turkish national intelligence flagged to the chief of staff that they had intercepted communications among a number of military personnel indicating that a coup was planned. With many of the military’s senior officers attending a wedding and the president vacationing at a seaside resort, and while a military shake-up was imminent, the coup plotters felt it was an opportune time to strike. A former Turkish military officer, now a security analyst, Metin Gurcan, wrote that the top brass decided to move to avert a coup by closing airspace and forbidding military units from leaving their barracks. Sensing that their moves were detected and getting wind of the meeting of loyal officers, the coup plotters moved up their plans from later that evening. Ibrahim Kalin, Erdogan’s spokesman, said the plotters kidnapped Gen. Hulusi Akar, the chief of military staff, after he learned of the suspicious activities. Gurcan said the soldiers leading the coup relied on WhatsApp to communicate commands and coordinate moves. Family members of soldiers

FRIDAY EVENING At around 10 p.m., there were reports that traffic was blocked one way on the Bosporus bridge. Gulnur Aybet, a professor at an Istanbul academy, said she was heading home on a busy Friday night when she saw tanks deployed on the bridge. It was a shocking sight, she said: “I felt violated.” In the capital Ankara, military jets swooped over the city and reports emerged of gunfire at the military headquarters in Ankara. By 11 p.m., Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, an Erdogan loyalist speaking by telephone on TV, said there was an attempted coup but that it wouldn’t succeed in interrupting democracy. Shortly after, a TV announcer on state television TRT read a statement by the coup plotters who referred to themselves as the “Peace at Home Committee,” a reference to famous words of national founder and former army officer Mustafa Kemal Ataturk: “Peace at home, peace in the world.” The plotters declared a curfew and vowed to protect freedoms. It was learned later that

military personnel had stormed TRT stations in Ankara and Istanbul, forcing the broadcaster in Ankara to read the statement. TRT staff in Istanbul said about 40 soldiers, including at least one officer, stormed their building, forcing them to go home. Ben Said, executive producer for TRT World, said the soldiers told the staff they were there to protect them from Islamic State militants. At around 11:30 p.m., explosions are heard at the police special forces training headquarters just outside of Ankara as jets start attacking it, killing 47 officers. The explosions damaged the roof of one building and tore down its front wall, exposing dust-covered bunk beds. A second building was riddled with bullet fire from helicopters. Jets also attacked the headquarters of the national satellite station, the national intelligence building and the Ankara police department, where seven police officers were killed. Military officers called TV stations to declare they didn’t support the attempted coup. State media later reported that F-16s took off from Diyarbakir Air Base that night after telling personnel on duty that the pilots were called for a mission against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq. Erdogan said

(CHAIWAT SUBPRASOM / Reuters) that power was cut at other military bases, including Incirlik, used by the U.S.-led coalition to bomb IS militants, to prevent renegade flights. Just around midnight, Erdogan called a private TV station, CNN Turk, through FaceTime, and urging the public to come out and defend Turkey. “We will overcome this,” he said. Citizens received messages on their mobile phones urging them to go out in the streets. Mosques used their loudspeakers to urge people to go out to the streets, which many did. EARLY SATURDAY Legislators rushed to the Turkish Grand National Assembly to oppose the coup attempt. The building was hit by three bombs, injuring 14 security guards. “As soon as parliament became active (in opposing the coup) it became a target of the bombs,” said Irfan Neziroglu, the parliament’s secretary-general. The legislators descended into a shelter at around 3 a.m. Gunshots and violence were also reported in Istanbul. Images emerged of protesters climbing over tanks, soldiers shooting into crowds and tanks driving over civilians to break up crowds. Meanwhile, prosecutors launched an investigation into the attempt and declared sol-

diers taking part in the coup would be arrested. The first arrests began at around 2 a.m. TRT television was liberated, soldiers who stormed it were detained and the station resumed broadcasts. Days after the coup, Erdogan and his aides revealed details of a commando raid on the beach resort where the president had been vacationing with his family. Kalin, his spokesman, said intelligence also revealed that three helicopters were heading toward the resort in Marmaris, prompting Erdogan to evacuate. The commandos, nearly 30 of them, arrived half an hour after the president and his family departed. The commandos went room-to-room looking for Erdogan. Clashes ensued and at least one of Erdogan’s guards was killed. Erdogan told CNN two days after that night that he survived only by minutes. Turkish officials accused the movement of the U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen of being behind the coup. Gulen has denied it. Shortly after 3 a.m., Erdogan arrived in Istanbul airport and was greeted by thousands of supporters. He later told CNN that the renegade soldiers had seized the communication towers in Istanbul airport, and that they flew F-16 jets overhead

when he landed there. SATURDAY MORNING Reports said a military helicopter used to attack Turksat satellite television was brought down at around 6 a.m., while two explosions were heard near Erdogan’s palace in Ankara. Soldiers who held the Bosporus Bridge are seen surrendering. Two hours later, Akar was freed from captivity at an air base on the outskirts of Ankara. At around 10 a.m., about 700 soldiers surrendered and left military headquarters. SATURDAY AFTERNOON The government launched a widespread crackdown on officials believed to be linked to Gulen, purging 2,745 judges and other judicial officials. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim addressed parliament, reading out a poem that constitutes the words of the Turkish national anthem. DAYS LATER State media said an aide to Turkish military chief, Lt. Col. Levent Turkkan, allegedly told interrogators the coup failed because Akar refused an offer to lead the attempt. (Suzan Fraser, Ankara, AFP)

Road brings jeans, satellite Top chefs, scientists to gather TV to Himalayan Shangri-La in Spain to explore taste ARCELONA - Do genetics influence what we like to eat? Why does food taste better when hungry? High-profile chefs and scientists will get together in a symposium in Spain to try and find out.

by Britain’s influential Restaurant magazine, Britain’s Heston Blumenthal and Singapore pastry chef Janice Wong will work with geneticists, physicists and neuroscientists from Oxford, Cambridge or Yale universities.

The gathering will be held in the Basque seaside resort of San Sebastian on October 2426 -- the first event organised by “Brainy Tongue,” a project launched by the Barcelonabased Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), a biomedical research institute, and the Basque Culinary Center, a gastronomy school.

“The world of cooking has always been close to science and that of science to cooking,” Aduriz said at the presentation of the Brainy Tongue project in Barcelona.

Himalayan ShangriLa that was closed to visitors until 1992, the former Buddhist kingdom of Upper Mustang in Nepal is facing unprecedented change as a new highway brings modernity to the roof of the world. Kerosene lamps have given way to solar panels, denim sneakers have replaced handstitched cowhide boots and satellite dishes are taking over the rooftops of homes dotted across the region, which borders Tibet. The former kingdom’s days as a cultural time capsule are numbered -- and change cannot come soon enough for young people like Tsewang Norbu Gurung, who lives in its walled capital, Lo Manthang. “I remember when Nepali TV first came here, less than 10 years ago. We used to pay 20 rupees (18 cents) for a three-hour sitting in someone’s house,” said Gurung. Today, nearly everyone owns their own television -- imported from China or India -- and young men like 30-year-old Gurung spend their evenings watching Bollywood films, Tibetan mythological dramas or soccer matches. Sitting with friends at a local teashop, their eyes glued to a television screen showing a Euro 2016 match, Gurung told AFP the road had transformed life in Lo Manthang. “Earlier, everything -- rice, oil, basic supplies -- had to be carried up on mules, it would take so many days, now it takes just one day in a vehicle,” he said. Gurung, who runs a souvenir shop, worked as a labourer on the road that was completed in 2014, connecting Upper Mustang with India and China -- a modest throwback to an era when the region dominated

trans-Himalayan commerce in salt, wool and spices.

his father the last king of a 600year-old dynasty.

For generations, traders led caravans through this forbidding high-altitude desert, passing vast canyons and red mountains that, legends say, are stained with the blood of a demon killed by the founder of Tibetan Buddhism.

The father-of-three now devotes his time to running a tour agency and doing charity work while overseeing repairs to the palace after last year’s earthquake.

Isolated past Nepal annexed the kingdom of Lo, as it was known then, in the 18th century but allowed the king to retain his title. It renamed the area Upper Mustang. For decades it saw virtually no foreign visitors and was accessible only by foot or horseback, leaving its residents cut off from outside influence until the road was completed a few years ago. The local Loba community, who speak a variant of Tibetan, retained their Buddhist practices even as the Cultural Revolution hit religious traditions in neighbouring Tibet. Upper Mustang’s isolation was so absolute that its royal family only boarded a plane for the first time in 1995, on visits to the US and Germany. Former crown prince Jigme Singi Palbar Bista grew up in a cavernous five-storey palace with 108 rooms, but the family did not live in luxury. With no electricity and with firewood scarce, palace staff would burn yak dung to heat the rooms. There were no high schools in Upper Mustang, so the prince would spend days trekking or riding to Jomsom on the region’s outskirts. “We are not like other royals... not that kind of luxury,” the 60year-old told AFP. Nepal’s transition from a monarchy to a republic in 2008 ruled out any chance of Bista inheriting the throne, making

But the Lobas still regard Bista as a spiritual guardian and approach him for help resolving land disputes that would otherwise have to be filed in court. - ‘Disappearing’ culture Nepal’s government has sought to preserve Upper Mustang’s unique culture by keeping tourist numbers down, charging a minimum visitors’ fee of $500. But many fear the road threatens the region’s unique identity as younger Lobas embrace modernity, swapping handspun Tibetan robes for made-in-China jeans. Lo Manthang’s gates are no longer locked at night to keep horses from running out. Instead, motorbikes crowd its cobblestone streets. “It’s important to save our culture so it reflects our identity. Otherwise there will be nothing special left about (Upper) Mustang,” said Khenpo Kunga Tenzin, head of Lo Manthang’s Monchoe Dragkar Thegchen Ling monastery. “We had our own identity, our own way of dressing... but now it’s all disappearing, it will all be gone.” Poised between an isolated past and an uncertain future, young Lobas like shopkeeper Gurung are more positive. “When I realize that my generation doesn’t know local songs or dances, I feel a bit ashamed,” he said. “But overall I am optimistic about the future. Things are getting better... life is getting easier.”

The Indian state that is obsessed with beef fry by Divya Arya 18 July 2016

N

ot many people would associate India with beef. Spirituality yes, perhaps even vegetarianism, but certainly not beef. But then they have probably never been to Kerala, the south Indian state that loves its beef preferably fried. The Kerala beef fry is the stuff of legend. The best sort, I was told, is served at tiny shops by the roadside, so nondescript that you might miss them completely if not for the aroma wafting out.

The key to this “heavenly” dish is coconut, a selection of Kerala spices and a lot of patience. Photo credit: BBC

It is a truly delicious smell with hints of coconut, curry leaves, cinnamon, cloves, coriander powder and roasted chilly.

Sunday lunch,” Kerala chef Nimmy Paul, who organises cooking classes for tourists, tells the BBC.

I visited one such shop, called the Paputty hotel. Paputty does not bother with unnecessary items like menus. If you have bothered to come in, it’s assumed you want the beef fry. That’s the only thing my hosts, Hari Lal and Ranjeet PA, want to eat, but to humour me they order a lavish spread including beef fry, beef curry, beef roast, as well as the quintessential Kerala bread, “Malabar parantha” and thin rice noodles called “idiyappam”. “When I put beef fry in my mouth, my tongue tells me I am in real heaven now,” Hari tells me. The key to this “heavenly” dish is coconut, a selection of Kerala spices and a lot of patience. To make authentic beef fry or “Thanga Kotthu Irachi”, the meat has to be stir fried along with coconut flakes on a slow flame for half a day. “Visitors prefer beef curry, made in a gravy of tomatoes and coconut milk, since that is what they associate with Indian food, but it is the beef fry that is the most popular preparation with locals in Kerala. Full of flavour, it can be had every day or made part of a special

Boatyards, Manoj Nair, explains that beef in fact, is a “secular meat” here. “Beef is very important for Kerala. There can be a Hindu, Muslim and Christian sitting at one table and they’d bond over a plate of beef fry and parantha despite any differences of caste and class,” he says.

Her recipe for beef fry incorporates a special preparation of ground spices that include coriander powder, chilli, black pepper, cinnamon and cloves. This fragrant mixture is massaged on to small cubes of beef along with an equal portion of coconut chunks.

Beef is such an intrinsic part of the Kerala identity in fact, it has even become political.

This is then all slow cooked in a pan with a heavy bottom. The more the beef is roasted, the darker the colour and richer the aroma of the dish.

Like a group of youngsters who started a Facebook page by the name “Beef Janata Party”, a spoof on the country’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been perceived to be cracking down on the slaughter and consumption of cows.

“I love that it is so succulent and melts in my mouth, and unlike mutton and chicken, it is light on the stomach”, Ranjeet tells me at the hotel.

“At no time have beef bans been imposed so forcefully as they are now.

It is also light on the pocket. The entire beef spread at Paputty hotel costs us a mere two pounds ($2.68).

“With cattle vigilante gangs and mob lynching, this is fascism in its most scary form,” a representative from the group told the BBC, requesting anonymity.

This love for beef is, as mentioned before, unusual for Hindu-majority India, where the cow is largely considered sacred.

For the average Kerala citizen, spicy beef and a couple of glasses of the locally brewed coconut toddy are essential fodder for heady political debates.

Most parts of northern, central and western India, in fact, have a complete or partial ban on cattle slaughter and beef consumption.

A sentiment expressed passionately by my companion Hari.

However Kerala, despite having a 55% Hindu population is one of the few Indian states with no ban.

“If they ever think of banning beef or toddy from Kerala, I will just leave.”

Different health benefits of yoga: Improves your flexibility and builds muscle strength Improved flexibility is one of the first and most obvious benefits of yoga and the seemingly impossible poses will become possible. It is also probable that aches and pains start to disappear. Inflexibility in muscles and connective tissue, such as fascia and ligaments, can cause poor posture.

1st June saw the celebrations of International Yoga Day aimed to raise awareness of the many benefits of practicing yoga worldwide. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word Yoga is derived from Sanskrit and means to join or unite, symbolizing the union of the body and consciousness. Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Yoga came to the attention of an educated western public in the mid-19th century along with other topics of Hindu philosophy. The first Hindu teacher to actively advocate and disseminate aspects of yoga to a western audience was Swami Vivekananda, who toured Europe and the United States in the 1890s (however, Vivekananda put little emphasis on the physical practices of Hatha Yoga in his teachings). Yoga is beneficial for the health in ways that modern science is just beginning to understand. That is why different branches of science are now acknowledging that everything in the universe works together with absolute, intimate and exquisite interrelationship, and this forms the basis of the increasing success and respect that Yoga Therapy is gaining among main stream medical practitioners. As more clinicians use these techniques either for themselves of or their patients, and as more masters design specific applications

Photo source and credit: gymcompany.co.uk of yoga, the spectrum of Yoga Therapy is growing exponentially. Presently the world is looking at Yoga with an intrigued eye, as Yoga speaks of Unity in every word. It’s widely known that Yoga can enhance your physical and emotional well-being, but when Yoga is practiced with a therapeutic intention in the form of Yoga Therapy, it can help prevent and aid recovery from physical and mental ailments. Yoga has long been practiced with therapeutic intentions as way of transforming both the body and the mind. The applications of Yoga Therapy range anywhere from maintaining health, to recovering from illness in some cases, even those considered incurable. The first stage of healing involves the movement of vital forces in the system. Practitioners of many Eastern forms of medicine believe that every illness involves a certain level of energy blockage. By promoting the flow of prana, or vital force, yoga combats those blockages, restoring the basic condition for health. Common applications for Yoga Therapy also serve structural problems such as spine misalignments or joint function. Deeper applications may even aid more intractable problems such as AIDS and cancer. By combining different techniques such as massage, stretching or alterations of the circulatory

patterns, yoga promotes specific changes in muscles, joints and organs altering the vital functions of the body. A good example would be the way Yoga Therapy can help overcome panic attacks. By practicing a balancing breathing technique, a sense of control is gained, combating the fear and anxiety produced by its loss.Additionally, by practicing ‘Tratak’, a specific technique that involves eye movement, the pituitary gland is reset via the optic nerve, influencing the ‘fight or flight’ reaction so intimately related with the syndrome. On a psychological level, the introspection promoted by yoga is essential to the selfknowledge process that fuels psychic transformation. The different relaxation techniques allow the troubled mind to calm and decrease its activity while promoting stability. Yoga considers the psyche to be spread in different centers along the body (chakras). Each related to a nervous plexus, an endocrine gland, an organ or group of organs and specific psychic qualities. By acting upon the chakras, yoga brings light to any psychic blockages, making them available to the conscious mind. The modern western correlate of this scheme is in the core of psycho neuro-immunology, a branch of psychology that studies the interaction

Yoga can help prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by “squeezing and soaking” areas of cartilage that normally aren’t used. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. Neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn-out brake pads. Spinal disks, the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves, crave movement. That’s the only way they get their nutrients. Increases your blood flow, accelerates the heart rate and controls hypertension Yoga gets the blood flowing and adds more oxygen to the cells. Yoga also boosts levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues. The practice thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by cutting off level of clot-promoting proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers. When one regularly gets the heart rate into the aerobic range the risk of heart attack is lowered and can relieve depression. But even yoga exercises that don’t get the heart rate up that high can improve cardiovascular conditioning. Continued next issue.

Poor US black men face nearly 3x death risk: study

P

oor African-American men in the United States face nearly three times the risk of dying as black men above the poverty line, according to research published on Monday. The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine are based on a study of healthy aging in diverse neighborhoods that recruited 3,720 participants, including black and white men and women of various incomes. Their average age was 48. African-American men in poverty saw a 2.7 times higher risk of death than AfricanAmerican men living above poverty status, the researchers found. The main causes of death were heart disease and cancer. The same disparity was not seen among white men. Poor white males faced about the same risk of dying as white

men above the poverty line, the study found. Among women, both blacks and whites in poverty were about twice as likely to die young as those who were not poor. The study, led by Alan Zonderman of the National Institute on Aging, set the poverty line for a family of four at $24,000. The government defines poverty as earning less than $24,300 for a family of four or $11,880 per year for a single person. “African American males are feared and marginalized in American society. This lifelong ostracism facilitates cascading negative outcomes in education, employment and in interaction with the criminal justice system,” Zonderman said. “The resultant poverty is a virulent health risk factor for African American men.” -AFP

Biodiversity plunges below ‘safe’ levels: study

H

aving a range of different plant and animal species helps guarantee the health of the Earth, but a study Thursday suggested that biodiversity may be declining beyond safe levels. On 58 percent of the world’s land surface, which is home to 71 percent of the global population, “the level of biodiversity loss is substantial enough to question the ability of ecosystems to support human societies,” said the report in the US journal Science. Researchers at University College London based their study on data from hundreds of international scientists, crunching 2.38 million records for more than 39,000 species at more than 18,000 sites in the world. They sought to estimate how biodiversity has changed over time, particularly since humans arrived and built on land. Areas most affected included grasslands, savannas and shrublands, followed by many of the world’s forests and woodlands, said the report. Using a reference known as the Biodiversity Intactness

Index (BII), which captures changes in species abundance, researchers said a safe limit of change is generally considered about a 10 percent reduction in BII. In other words, “species abundance within a given habitat is 90 percent of its original value in the absence of human land use,” said the report. The study showed that global biodiversity has fallen below that threshold, to 84.6 percent. “This is the first time we’ve quantified the effect of habitat loss on biodiversity globally in such detail and we’ve found that across most of the world biodiversity loss is no longer within the safe limit suggested by ecologists,” said lead researcher Tim Newbold of UCL. “In many parts of the world, we are approaching a situation where human intervention might be needed to sustain ecosystem function.” The biggest changes have been happening in the most heavily populated areas, raising concern about the potential impact on human health as well. -AFP

Many fitness trackers leak personal data: study

ASHINGTON | AFP 7/18/2016 - Security weaknesses on many popular fitness trackers may allow hackers to access or potentially manipulate user data, a study showed Monday. The study of seven Androidpowered trackers by the security firm AV-Test showed vulnerabilities similar to that found in its research from a year earlier -- with many devices lacking secure connections or tamper protection. The researchers said the Apple Watch, which was evaluated using different criteria because of its operating system, had a “high security rating” despite some “theoretical vulnerabilities.” The seven Android devices showed varying levels of security, with some allowing hackers the ability to access or tamper with user data. “As already witnessed in the initial test of fitness wristbands last year, many manufacturers are also committing similar errors in the current test,” the report said. “They often don’t pay sufficient attention to the aspect of security.” The highest risk came from devices made by Runtastic, Striiv and Xiaomi, with seven to eight potential vulnerabili-

‘Ghost schools’ haunt IITAGH’s Workshop on Art Pakistan despite budget boost A hit with families

I

IT Alumni of Greater Houston (IITAGH) organized a workshop on Art and Applied Art on Sunday July 17th from 10am-12 noon at the India House. In 2016, IITAGH has typically organized events around Technology. This was the first event targeted as a family fun activity while continuing to learning something new.

I

SLAMABAD - Pakistan’s education budget has doubled in recent years -- to almost as much as the military’s -- but literacy and dropout rates remain abysmal and “ghost schools” persist, a new report said. A staggering 24 million children are not in school and more than half of eight-year-olds cannot read despite the budget growing twofold to $7.5 billion in the last six years, the report from the US-based Wilson Center released Thursday found. Pakistan’s poor report card comes even as the number of so-called ghost schools -which receive funding but have no teachers or students -- has declined in some areas. Nationwide there were fewer ghost schools than in the early 2000s when up to 20 percent of all schools across the country were empty, the study called “Pakistan’s Education Crisis: The Real Story” said. The United States, Britain and

the World Bank have poured money into Pakistan’s stagnating public education sector, seen as a key weapon against religious extremism and rising income inequality. But the number of children out of school today is second only to Nigeria, and the South Asian country of about 200 million people has an adult literacy rate of 56.4 percent as many parents see little use in putting their children in school, the report added. It found that although combined spending in the public and private education sectors was above four percent -- the globally accepted benchmark for education spending -- money was not being spent wisely. “Pakistan’s education crisis does not come down to how much the country spends, but how the money is spent,” said report author Nadia Naviwala. “Pakistan needs to spend better, not simply spend more.”

She added education spending was almost on a par with the powerful military, which has a budget of $8.2 billion for 2016. The study registered that there had been improvements despite some setbacks. In Punjab, the country’s most populous province, teacher absenteeism dropped from 20 percent to six percent between 2010 and 2015.

“IITAGH works on the pillars of Connecting and Developing it’s members and Giving back to the local community. This Art workshop was successful from all the three pillars, as we brought together families, connected members and speakers and gave back to local community in terms of continuing education and fun. IITAGH thanks all the participants who took time from their Sunday morning to attend this workshop and make it a success”, said Shamanth Shankar, IITAGH President. Nimmy started the workshop by guiding the participants from scribbling to drawing shapes, sketching still life images and eventually sketching a self portrait. As Bharath Rao, photography volunteer at the event put it, Nimmy’s instruction on how to sketch a portrait

But the rise in funding -mainly spent on salary boosts for teachers -- has had little effect. In Sindh province, standardised test scores of fifth and sixth graders, or children aged 10 and 11, showed zero improvement between 2012 and 2014. Improvements in other provinces were also marginal. Britain’s development agency is the primary donor, giving $150 million in 2016, or about two percent of Pakistan’s overall education budget.

Bollywood bad boy Khan’s unstoppable box office appeal

Legendary playback singer Mubarak Begum dies at 80

by Udita Jhunjhunwala

M

UMBAI, Jul 19 (PTI) Legendary singer Mubarak Begum, best known for crooning the title track of 1961 romanticdrama “Hamari Yaad Aayegi”, has passed away after prolonged illness. She was 80.

M

UMBAI - He’s been accused of killing a homeless man, shooting dead an endangered animal and assaulting a former Miss World but it seems nothing can stop the box office appeal of Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan.

She died on Monday at her residence in suburban Jogeshwari here.

The Indian superstar’s latest blockbuster smashed records this week, just over a fortnight after he sparked fresh controversy by saying his heavy training schedule for the film left him feeling “like a raped woman”.

“Mubarak Begum is no more with us. She passed away at 9.30 pm at her residence in Jogeshwari. She was unwell from quite sometime,” a family member told PTI. Begum, who gave scores of Hindi film songs and ghazals mainly during 1950s-70s, had not been keeping well for the last few years.

“Sultan”, in which Khan plays an ageing wrestler, enjoyed the highest-grossing opening weekend in Hindi cinema history, proving that for his legions of fans the body-building actor can do no wrong. “I watch every Salman film. I love him. He is the reason I am in this profession,” Abhishek, a buff Mumbai fitness trainer, told AFP. The actor known as “bhai”, meaning “brother” in Hindi, enjoys a cult-like status in star-obsessed India, with the majority of his devotees young men who envy Khan for being unmarried at 50. They are largely from Mumbai’s mass of migrant workers who eke out a hardscrabble living in the sprawling financial capital but dream of a more glamorous life. Invariably, they emulate his hairstyle and fashion, wearing pirated t-shirts emblazoned with Khan’s charity “Being Human”. At weekends they gather outside his home where Khan waves at fans from his balcony. “He has always been the poster boy of a large section of the youth population,” filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, who directed Khan in 2007 romantic drama “Salaam E Ishq”, told AFP. The majority are not on Twitter and are immune to social media outcries such as the one Khan sparked last month when his rape analogy made to a local news site went viral. Khan has not apologised for the comments, as demanded by India’s National Commission for Women, but his father Bollywood screenwriter Salim Khan made an apology of sorts on his son’s behalf. - Hit-and-run case -Khan has starred in more than 100 films and television shows since his first hit “Maine Pyar Kiya” (I Fell in Love) in the 1980s. But his personal life has long been dogged by controversy.

She made her Bollywood singing debut with 1949 film “Aiye” in which she had a solo track, “Mohe Aane Lagi Angdai Aaja Aaja”, and “Aao Chale Sakhi Wahan” with melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. Bollywood actor Salman Khan, known as “bhai”, meaning “brother” in Hindi, enjoys a cult-like status in star-obsessed India (AFP Photo) see him the way he is,” he told AFP. Although he was cleared last year of killing a homeless man “He’s immensely popular in a late-night hit-and-run crash because he wears his heart on in 2002, that decision is now his sleeve, he’s a bad boy and being challenged in the Su- a brat, but then he does all this preme Court. good work with Being Human. Khan is also battling allegations he used unlicensed arms to shoot an endangered Indian antelope for which he spent a week behind bars in 1998. His image also took a hit when former Miss World and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai accused Khan of assaulting her during a relationship which ended more than a decade ago. Khan has denied ever hitting any women. The controversies haven’t stopped him becoming one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars with “Sultan” making over two billion rupees ($31 million) in the week since its July 6 release, according to industry estimates. Khan earned more than $33 million in 2015 alone. His earnings have been boosted in recent years by regularly playing the lead in India’s annual Eid blockbuster, capitalising on one of the year’s major holidays. Director Kabir Khan, who worked with Khan on the movie “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, believes his misdemeanours hint at a “vulnerability” that audiences relate to. “He makes politically incorrect statements but that seems to endear him to audiences who

“His fans stand by him and overlook many of his indiscretions by saying his heart is in the right place.” - New admirers -Filmmakers say Khan’s popularity is skyhigh as he’s now also winning over wealthier cinema-goers who previously tended to prefer the cleaner-cut images of Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Khan describes himself as a “humanitarian” on his Twitter profile and filmmaker Advani believes his “image makeover” has helped him persuade fans “to feel that he was always misunderstood and somewhat scapegoated”. Khan’s following has been enhanced by his hosting of the Indian version of reality TV show “Big Brother”. He’s also won praise for taking on difficult roles, such as “Sultan”, where his weight fluctuates wildly.

tracks. “Neend Ud Jaaye Teri”, “Mujh ko Apne Gale Lagalo” and “Humein Dum Daike” with Asha Bhosle are among her other known songs. “Saanwariya Teri Yaad Mein” from 1980 comedy “Ramu To Diwana Hai” was one of her last tracks. In 2011, the Maharashtra government had sanctioned a financial aid of Rs one lakh for treatment of the singer. Her last rites will take place today, family sources said.

I am motivated by fear: Tiger Shroff

M

UMBAI, Jul 19 (PTI) Actor Tiger Shroff says he is afraid of not being able to achieve the given task and that fear keeps motivating him to give his best. “I am motivated by fear and I am scared of not being able to do something,” Tiger said at the trailer launch of his upcoming film “A Flying Jatt”. The 26-year-old actor, who is playing a superhero in the movie,” said his father Jackie Shroff is his real life hero. “I think every kid’s hero is their dad and for me my superhero is my father... I like superheroes who are very human and underdog,” he said. “That’s why I relate to my character in ‘A Flying Jatt’ because he is a very normal person and very human. He was very unsure about his super powers, he didn’t know how to use them, he is scared of heights, speed, especially he is scared of his mom, but he has to listen to her,” he added.

“He isn’t just playing safe and holding on to the success, unlike some of his peers,” said Kabir Khan. “Audiences are responding to that effort and he’s attracting audiences outside of the cult followers, including women and children. His fans are growing.”

The “Baaghi” star said he had to work really hard for his role in the Remo D’Souzadirected movie. “Preparation was very difficult. We are trying to show a very different kind of action in the film, so lot of harness work and lot of martial arts-based action is there. “Remo sir gave me lot of time to prepare for the action sequences and also to learn a little bit of Punjabi culture.” The Flying Jatt which also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Nathan Jones, is slated to A u s t r a l i a n release on August 25. Asthma risk up to 4x higher near fracking sites: US study

M

IAMI, AFP | 7/18/2016 - Living near sites that extract natural gas by hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, may increase the risk of asthma up to four times, a US study said Monday. The findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine, are based on research examining health records collected from 2005 to 2012 in the northeastern state of Pennsylvania. The researchers found more than 35,000 asthma patients aged from five to 90. Most asthma attacks they suffered -- nearly 21,000 in all -- were mild, requiring a corticosteroid prescription. Another 4,782 severe attacks required hospitalization and 1,870 moderate ones prompted emergency room visits. The researchers mapped where the patients lived, together with the loca-

tion, size and number of natural gas operations, and compared them to asthma patients who suffered no attacks during the same year. “Those who lived closer to a large number or bigger active natural gas wells were significantly more likely -1.5 to four times more likely -- to suffer asthma attacks,” the study said. The findings held up even when the researchers accounted for other factors that can exacerbate asthma, such as living near main roads, having a family history of asthma, and smoking, they said. “Ours is the first to look at asthma but we now have several studies suggesting adverse health outcomes related to the drilling of unconventional natural gas wells,” said lead researcher Sara Rasmussen of the Bloomberg School’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. “Going forward, we need to focus on the exact reasons why these things

are happening because if we know why, we can help make the industry safer.” The growth of Pennsylvania’s fracking operations -- with more than 6,000 wells developed in the past decade -has raised concerns about effects on air and water quality. Asthma is a chronic disease that can be made worse by outdoor air pollution, stress and sleep disruption -- all of which have been linked to unconventional natural gas development in previous studies. “We are concerned with the growing number of studies that have observed health effects associated with this industry,” said senior author Brian Schwartz, a professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Bloomberg School. “We believe it is time to take a more cautious approach to well development with an eye on environmental and public health impacts.”

Zika epidemic should fizzle out within 3 yrs: study

M

Then, this herd immunity “will likely delay the next large Zika epidemic for more than a decade.” The virus, though first discovered in 1947, largely took public health officials by surprise when it began spreading through the Americas last year and causing birth defects. The rise in infants born with irreversible malformations has been most acute in Brazil, where some 7,438 suspected microcephaly cases have been reported as of May and 1,326 cases confirmed, the study found. Typically, Brazil saw fewer than 200 annual cases of microcephaly -- in which the infant is born with an unusually small head and brain.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are seen in a mosquito cage at a laboratory in Cucuta, Colombia. (AP Photo/Ricardo Mazalan) Zika infections have been reported in dozens of countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. The United States has seen a rise in travel-associated cases, but so far no local transmission has been observed. Vaccine too late? Ferguson also warned that efforts to slow the spread of Zika, by increasing mosquito-control measures, could actually prolong the epidemic. And efforts underway to design a vaccine -- which officials have said could take several years -- may come to fruition too late, he said. “If our projections are correct, cases will have dropped substantially by the end of next year, if not sooner,” said Ferguson. “This means by the time we have vaccines ready to be tested, there may not be enough cases of Zika in the community to test if the vaccine works.”

Amid concerns about the potential spread of Zika during the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, a separate report out Wednesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the risk of transmission is low. As many as 500,000 international visitors and athletes from 207 countries are expected to travel to Rio, but “this travel volume represents a very small fraction –- less than 0.25 percent -– of the total estimated 2015 travel volume to Zika-affected countries,” said the CDC. “Visitors to the Games are expected to have a low probability of mosquito-borne Zika infections because the Games will occur during the winter season in Rio de Janeiro (August 5-21 and September 7-18, respectively) when the cooler and drier weather typically reduces mosquito populations.” The US agency did raise particular concern, however, about Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea and Yemen. It said “these four countries do not have substantial travel to any country with local Zika virus transmission, except for their participation in the Games, and have environmental conditions and population susceptibility to sustain mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus.” Pregnant women should not travel to the Olympics, and all visitors should take steps to avoid mosquito bites and prevent potential sexual transmission of the virus, the CDC urged.

he Department of Justice is widely expected to be nearing a decision on Aetna’s $34 billion deal with Humana and Anthem’s $54 billion agreement to buy Cigna, one year after the megahealth insurance mergers were announced. For months, analysts thought the Anthem-Cigna deal was the more challenged of the two when it comes to regulatory approval, because of the potential impact their combination would have on competition in the commercial large-employer market. Now, investors are increasingly concerned regulators could block Aetna and Humana’s merger because of the potential dominance the combined company would have in the market for private Medicare health plans known as Medicare Advantage. These fears were fanned by reports, citing unnamed sources, that claimed federal regulators raised significant concerns about this issue.

The combined firm’s Medicare Advantage enrollment would be nearly 4.5 million members, accounting for 25 percent of national enrollment this year. UnitedHealth Group is currently the largest Medicare Advantage health insurer with 3.8 million members, or about 21 percent of enrollment.

The study by scientists at Imperial College London appears in the US journal Science.

This should happen within two to three years, he added.

Hurdles to approval

IAMI | AFP | 7/14/2016 The outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, blamed for a surge in birth defects, has likely reached its peak in Latin America and the epidemic should be over within three years, researchers said Thursday.

“Because the virus is unable to infect the same person twice -- thanks to the immune system generating antibodies to kill it -- the epidemic reaches a stage where there are too few people left to infect for transmission to be sustained.”

Medicare plans may be more competitive than the DOJ thinks— here’s why it matters

“Humana today trades at a 45 percent discount to the implied acquisition price (of $230 per share), which has widened since the middle of June as skepticism has increased about their potential to get the deal closed,” said Steven Halper, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets.

In order to win approval from the Justice Department, the companies have reportedly offered to divest regional plans covering roughly 350,000 members, and have reportedly received bids from smaller Medicare rivals WellCare Health and Centene, but analysts say regulators may not see the sales alone as enough to maintain competition. “The question is not can you find a buyer for the plans… but will the government approve the buyer?” said Halper. “There are many markets … where there’s too much overlap and unfortunately no qualified buyer for these plans if the government insists on having an existing market participant … who’s familiar with the local market.” It’s an issue that arose following Humana’s acquisition of Arcadian Health for $150 million in 2012. As condition of approval, the Justice Department required the companies to divest plans in five states, representing 13,000 Medicare Advantage members. Like other private health insurance plans, Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks to try to control costs and offer competitive premiums for seniors. Without those networks in place, new insurers in local markets can face a significant competitive disadvantage. A study by antitrust policy researchers at The Capitol Forum found that two years after the Humana sale of Arcadian assets, Vantage Health was the only insurer still operating the plans it had bought from Humana in 2015. Cigna and WellCare were unable to offer competitive plans and exited the markets. Medicare Advantage vs Traditional Medicare But antitrust attorney Mark Rust said the companies could make a case that even if they became the dominant Medicare Advantage provider, it would still leave plenty of competition in the market because of the traditional Medicare option. “Depending on how you define the market, Aetna-Humana may account for 25 percent of the market, or they may account for 5 percent… depend-

Sudhir Mathuria Licensed Professional Health Life 360 6776 Southwest Freeway Suite # 178 Houston TX 77074 713-771-2900 www.MyMedicarePlanning.com ing on how you define the product,” said Rust, a managing partner at Barnes and Thornburg, who does not represent Aetna or Humana. The companies have argued in their state insurance regulatory filings that traditional Medicare should be considered as a market alternative to Medicare Advantage. Two out of 3 Medicare enrollees still choose to enroll in the traditional plan. However, in its 2012 complaint against Humana, DOJ officials dismissed that argument, saying Medicare Advantage and traditional Medicare are separate and distinct health plan products. Analysts say the two options are structured quite differently. Medicare Advantage is more like the kind of private insurance plans most Americans get from employers. “In a sense, it’s one-stop shopping,” said Gretchen Jacobson, associate director at the Kaiser Family Foundation. “You just have one plan.” Traditional Medicare, known as Part A, covers hospitalization costs. Beyond that, most seniors pay a premium of $104.90 or $121.80 per month for medical coverage that pays for things like doctor visits, and they can buy a supplemental Medigap plan to help cover outof-pocket expenses. They can also buy additional coverage for drugs, under Medicare Part D plans. Researchers at the Kaiser Family Foundation say only about 5 percent of seniors switch from Medicare Advantage to the traditional option on an annual basis. Part of the reason may be Medicare rules that make it hard to switch. “They may not be able to get a Medigap policy to help wrap around for their cost-sharing,” said Jacobson. “The only time when you’re absolutely guaranteed to get a Medigap policy is when you turn 65.” Under Medicare rules, seniors who don’t enroll for supplemental plans when they’re first eligible at age 65 can be denied coverage in some states for pre-existing health conditions. Still, the DOJ’s view on this issue has not been put to the test in court, said Rust. If federal regulators choose to sue Aetna and Humana to block the merger, the structure of the overall Medicare market could become a central argument. “We don’t have any cases on this yet, and it will all come down to the view of a federal judge, wearing his or her cap as an economist, basically,” he said. FBR’s Halper still sees a 65 percent chance that the DOJ will reach a divesture agreement with Aetna and Humana to approve the deal. He and other analysts are less confident Anthem and Cigna will gain federal approval. For Medicare planning contact Sudhir Mathuria @ 713-771-2900.

In court papers filed in California, federal prosecutors listed the Hollywood financial crime caper “The Wolf of Wall Street” and nearly twenty other assets to be seized, including lavish real estate from Beverly Hills to a penthouse in New York’s Time Warner Center to London’s high-end Belgravia neighborhood. Also included were artworks by the painters Monet and Van Gogh as well as a Bombardier

Microsoft posted a better-than-expected $3.1 billion in fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, boosted by growth in its cloud computing businesses ©Jewel Samad (AFP/File) cost-cutting efforts. Halliburton dropped 2.3 percent after reporting a loss of $3.2 billion in the second quarter, due mainly to a $3.5 billion payout to Baker Hughes after the Justice Department blocked Halliburton’s proposed takeover of its rival.

United Continental rose 1.8 percent as second-quarter earnings topped analyst expectations and it announced a new $2 billion share repurchase program. Twenty-First Century Fox fell 2.2 percent following reports that longtime Fox News

chief Roger Ailes is negotiating his departure from the money-making network following a lawsuit alleging he sexually harassed a star host. Oil-linked shares fell on lower oil prices, with ExxonMobil shedding 0.7 percent, Schlumberger 0.8 percent and Apache 2.2 percent.

Global 5000 business jet. All were the tainted proceeds of the misappropriation of billions of dollars from the scandal-tarred 1Malaysia Development Berhad investment fund. The development was likely to prove particularly embarrassing for Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who, in his concurrent position as finance minister, controlled the company until its dissolution in May. The Wall Street Journal reported last year that investigators had tied nearly $700 million to Najib’s personal bank accounts. Najib had previously denied wrongdoing. Subsequent reports said the money originated from 1MDB

and may have exceeded $1 billion, which 1MDB denies. The government later acknowledged the payments, but called them a “personal donation” from the Saudi royal family. Using the pseudonym “Malaysian Official 1,” Wednesday’s complaint identifies a “high-ranking official” in the Malaysian government with control over the fund as being involved in the misappropriation of funds. US Attorney General Loretta Lynch will reveal details of the seizure effort later on Wednesday. The move to seize the funds, which is subject to what could be lengthy legal proceedings,

emerges from a 2010 Justice Department anti-kleptocracy initiative intended to confiscate the ill-gotten gains of world leaders which pass through the US banking system. The scandal around the embezzlement of billions of dollars from the fund, much of them borrowed, has battered Najib’s government. Authorities from Singapore to Switzerland and the United States have joined in tracking down missing funds of 1MDB. Switzerland and Singapore have frozen millions of dollars worth of assets on suspicion of 1MDB-related embezzlement and money-laundering, but so far no major figures have been brought to justice.

S prosecutors announced charges Wednesday against two top HSBC executives over a fraudulent foreign exchange trade front-running scheme that netted some $8 million at the expense of a bank client.

About 30 minutes into trade, the Dow was at 18,568.90, up 0.1 percent. The index has closed at a new record on each the last six trading days. The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.2 percent at 2,167.53, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.6 percent to 5,066.06.

ment said. “As alleged, the defendants placed personal and company profits ahead of their duties of trust and confidentiality owed to their client, and in doing so, defrauded their client of millions of dollars,” said US Attorney Robert Capers.

Mark Johnson, the head of global foreign exchange cash trading, was arrested at John F. Kennedy international airport Tuesday night in New York, the Justice Department said.

“When questioned by their client about the higher price paid for their significant transaction, the defendants wove a web of lies designed to conceal the truth and divert attention away from their fraudulent trades.”

US officials also charged Stuart Scott, HSBC’s former head of foreign exchange cash trading for Europe.

Johnson is set to be presented before a federal judge Wednesday in Brooklyn to face fraud charges.

The Justice Department said the bank was hired in 2011 by a client to convert some $3.5 billion in proceeds from the planned sale of a foreign subsidiary into British pounds.

The arrests follow major enforcement cases against big banks over rigging of the foreign exchange market.

Knowing about the confidential plan, Johnson and Scott purchased pounds for HSBC’s accounts, which they held until the mammoth client order went through.

They also caused the $3.5 billion transaction to be executed in a way that would spike the price of pound, benefitting HSBC at the client’s expense, the Justice Depart-

HSBC was one of six major US and European banks that were fined a total $4.2 billion by global regulators in a November 2014 crackdown for attempted manipulation of the foreign exchange market. In May 2015, US and British regulators fined six major banks a total of nearly $6 billion for rigging foreign exchange market and Libor interest rates. HSBC was not among the banks in that agreement.

US inflation steady in June

N

EW YORK, (AFP) - US inflation was steady in June despite higher oil prices, the Labor Department reported Friday, but a key core measure pointed to a slow pickup in price gains. The consumer price index (CPI) for all items rose 0.2 percent month-on-month, the same as in May, and the 12month figure for all items was just 1.0 percent, mainly due to the plunge in energy prices last year. Price rises were strongest in housing rents, transportation and health care items and services.

US oil prices already hit twomonth lows Tuesday after the International Monetary Fund lowered its global growth forecasts, citing the impact of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

But there were signs of accelerating inflation in core prices, which exclude volatile food and energy. Core CPI was up 2.3 percent over 12 months, compared with 2.2 percent a month earlier and 1.8 percent last year. That could provide support for arguments that the Federal Reserve should raise interest rates. The Fed has said it wants to see inflation at 2.0 percent as a sign of firm growth, but its preferred measure, the core personal consumption expenditures price index, remains below that level at 1.6 percent year-on-year.

The IMF said it expects the world economy to expand 3.1 percent this year, lower than it forecast in April. Slower overall growth would likely dampen the expansion of crude oil demand.

As more and more employees work offsite, virtual meetings are becoming a necessity. Since it’s harder to “read the room” when you’re not actually in the same room as your team, these meetings can be tricky to navigate. The key is to focus on building relationships. Allow 10 minutes at the start of each meeting for people to connect and catch up with each other. Think of this as your virtual watercooler time, when you can engage in informal conversations. Ask questions about personal lives and families to get to know each other outside the context of work. Once you officially start the meeting, be sure to refer to each contributor by name so that everyone feels recognized and part of the community. When you can, meet face to face with team members. These techniques help lay the foundation for authentic conversation and connection, which ultimately lead to more-effective virtual meetings.
