Houston celebrates 2nd International Day of Yoga
by Shobana Muratee OUSTON - The rippling effect of the international yoga movement, or ‘people’s mass movement’ as propounded by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, resonated even more strongly this year on Tuesday, June 21st as millions across the world stretched their bodies to mark the second International Day of Yoga. In Houston the day was celebrated with great passion and preparedness as over 500 yoga enthusiasts rolled out their yoga mats on the lawns of Discovery Green Park, Downtown. Renowned yogi Robert Boustany from Pralaya Yoga Creator was joined by Vishwarupa, Director, VYASA Houston and Lindsey Law, yoga teacher and disciple of Boustany, in beginning the session that evening. “This relaxation, these feelings of love and peace, they are available to you anytime with some practice,” Boustany encouraged the participants. The session lasted for

ou’d think that if there was one step both parties in Washington could support in the wake of the nation’s worst mass shooting, it would be to close a yawning gap in federal gun background checks — a strategy supported by nearly 90% of Americans.

Yet in an extraordinary act of cowardice on Monday evening, 56 senators — 53 Republicans joined by three Democrats — threw away yet another opportunity to keep guns out of the hands of more felons, fugitives, the mentally ill or people prone to domestic violence.

These spineless lawmakers voted against advancing a commonsense measure to expand background checks to virtually all sales of guns, not just those sold by federally licensed dealers. The existing gap allows buyers who purchase from private sellers at gun shows, online or from newspaper ads to simply avoid the federal background check system.

That system, run by the FBI, is efficient for buyers: More than nine of 10 gun buyers get a yes or no within minutes. And the system is effective for screening out those barred by federal law from buying firearms: It has denied guns to 2.4 million prospective buyers since it was created in 1994. The largest category is felons and people who’ve committed serious misdemeanors.

The Senate’s shame on guns: Our view Senators throw away another chance to improve background checks. find shootings where the killers exploited this well-known loophole: In 2012, Radcliffe Haughton killed his estranged wife and two co-workers at a Wisconsin spa, even though he was under a restraining order that would have prevented his buying a gun if there’d been a background check. Instead, Haughton found a willing private seller after posting a “want to buy” ad on an Internet site. In 2009, Tyrone Adair, twice convicted of battery and under a restraining order, bought a 9mm Glock handgun by responding to a Wisconsin newspaper ad. The unlicensed seller jokingly asked: “You’re not going to go out and kill someone, are you?” Within weeks, Adair’s two daughters and their mothers were shot to death. Wanted by police, Adair was found dead of a gunshot wound.
In 1998, the students who killed 13 and then shot themselves at Columbine High School got their weapons through a friend who bought them from an unlicensed seller at a gun show. They bought another from a pizza shop worker who knew they were too young to make the purchase but sold it to them anyway. In the face of Washington gridlock, some states are tightening background checks on their own. Since 2012, legislators in six states — Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, New York, Oregon and Washington — have shown the will to make this sensible, life-saving change. California has had expanded checks for all guns since 1990, and voters in Maine and Nevada will vote on similar measures this fall.
the sale of military-style assault weapons of the type used in Orlando, and on Monday the Supreme Court rejected challenges to assault weapons bans in Connecticut and New York. The court’s action suggests that states may be the best avenue for sensible gun restrictions consistent with the Second Amendment. Those who want to prevent future mass killings apparently will need to look outside Congress for help. Monday’s votes showed, once again, that too many members are too cowed by the gun lobby to take the actions necessary to save lives. USA TODAY’s editorial opinions are decided by its Editorial Board, separate from the news staff. Most editorials are coupled with an opposing view — a unique USA TODAY feature.
Seven states have also banned
This was the third time since the fatal shooting of 20 firstgraders in Newtown, Conn., in 2012 that the Senate has derailed similar measures. (Senators also rejected three other gun amendments on Monday.)

Would expanding background checks be a panacea? Of course not. The Orlando killer, a security guard, was able to purchase his guns legally. But no one should buy into the absurd notion, pushed by the gun lobby, that to be worthwhile a measure must demonstrate that it could have prevented the most recent atrocity or all mass murders.

andhi was rescued from a bloodthirsty mob by the Durban police. He was escorted by the police to Rustomji’s house, where a doctor attended to his injuries. “They are sure to calm down when they realize their mistake,” he said. Late in the evening, another mob of white people surrounded the house. “We must have Gandhi,” angry voices demanded. The mob was getting more and more threatening. “Give us Gandhi or we will bum down the house,” they shouted. Gandhi knew that they might carry out their threat. To save his friend’s house, he slipped out in disguise, eluding the crowd. Two days later a message came from London. Joseph Chamberlain, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, asked the Natal Government to prosecute every man guilty of attacking Gandhi. The Natal Government expressed its regret for the incident to Gandhi and assured him that the assailants would be punished. When Gandhi was called upon to identify the offenders, however, he would not do so. “I do not want to prosecute anyone,” he told the Natal Government. “I do not hold the assailants to blame. They were misled by false reports about me and I am sure that when the truth becomes known they will be sorry for their conduct.” Gandhi’s statement suddenly changed the atmosphere in Durban. The press declared Gandhi innocent and condemned his assailants. The Durban incident raised Gandhi’s prestige and won more sympathy abroad for the Indians in South Africa. As the struggle in South Africa continued, a change was coming over Gandhi. He had begun with a life of ease and comfort, but this was short-

As the struggle in South Africa continued, a change was coming over Gandhi. He had begun with a life of ease and comfort, but this was short lived. As he became more and more involved in public activities, his way of life became simpler. He started cutting his expenses. He took to washing and ironing his own clothes, and he did it so badly at first that the other lawyers laughed at him.
ting down his expenses. He took to washing and ironing his own clothes, and he did it so badly at first that the other lawyers laughed at him. But soon he became quite an expert at this and his collars were no less stiff and shiny than theirs. Gandhi once went to an English barber in Pretoria. The barber insolently refused to cut a ‘black’ man’s hair. Gandhi at once bought a pair of clippers and cut his own hair. He succeeded more or less in cutting the front part but spoilt the back. He looked very funny and his friends in the court laughed at him. “What’s wrong with your hair, Gandhi? Have rats been gnawing at it?” they asked. “No,” said Gandhi proudly, “I have cut my hair myself.” Then Gandhi tried changes in his food. He started taking uncooked food. He believed that if a man lived on fresh fruits and nuts he could master his passions and acquire spiritual strength. He made many experiments with his diet. He even came to the conclusion that fasting increased one’s will power. While he was thus experimenting with himself, the Boer war broke out. The Boers were South Africans of Dutch origin. They were fighting the British. Neither of these two white nations had treated the Indians well. Gandhi did not want to support either of them, but his familiarity with the British

made him organize an Indian ambulance corps to help them. To his puzzled followers, he said: “India can achieve complete emancipation only through development within the British Empire. Therefore we must help the British.” The British won the war and the ambulance corps was disbanded. The newspapers in England praised the services rendered by the Indians. The relations between the Indians and the Europeans had now become more cordial, and the Indians believed that their grievances would soon be removed. It was now 1901 six years after Gandhi had brought his family to Durban. Now he felt that his future activity lay not in South Africa but in India. Also, friends in India were pressing him to return home. When he announced his decision to his co-workers, however, they again pressed him to stay on. After much discussion they agreed to let him go, but only if he would come back to South Africa if the Indians there needed his help. He agreed to this. There were farewell meetings and presentations of gifts. The gifts were so many and so valuable that Gandhi felt he should not accept them. The people who had presented them would not take them back. He then prepared a trust deed, and all the gifts were deposited with a bank to be used for the welfare of the

Indian community. On his arrival in India, Gandhi went on a tour of the country. The annual meeting of the Indian National Congress was being held in Calcutta under the presidentship of Dinshaw Wacha. Gandhi attended the session. It was his first contact with the Congress which he was to lead so gloriously in the future. The Indian National Congress was the only organization which gave the people of India a chance to express their political views. It was an influential body, as many important Indians were members, but its decisions had little affect on the Government. At the Calcutta session in 1901 Gandhi had an opportunity to meet Congress leaders like Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, Lokamanya B. G. Tilak, G. K. Gokhale, and others. He was not impressed with the way the Congress was functioning. He noticed a lack of unity among the delegates. Moreover, while they spoke English and affected the style of Westerners in their dress and talk, they did not seem to bother about essential things
like good sanitary facilities in the camp. Gandhi wanted to teach them a lesson. On his own he quietly started cleaning the bathroom and urinals. No one volunteered to join him. “Why do you undertake an untouchable’s job?” they asked. “Because the caste people have made this an untouchable place,” replied Gandhi. From Calcutta Gandhi travelled round India by train. As he moved from place to place, he was shocked to see the life of the common people - the famished, ignorant, and neglected masses. His heart was filled with sadness and anger. Gandhi settled down in Bombay and started practice as a lawyer. He did well, much better than he had expected. In December 1902, however, a cable reached him from South Africa requesting him to return as promised. Joseph Chamberlain, the Colonial Secretary, was arriving from London on a visit to Natal and the Transvaal, and the Natal Indian Congress wanted Gandhi to present their case to him. — To be continued

Q: I wish to file for my permanent residence based on marriage to a US Citizen. I understand that I have to file separate applications for work permit and travel. How do I do this? A: Applicants for adjustment of status to permanent residence (or Green Card) may file together with their Form I-485 Application To Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, two other separate applications – one is for Employment Authorization under Form I-765 and the other is for Advance Parole under Form I-131. The Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will grant the holder authorization to work in the US. The Advance Parole (AP) allows the holder to return (via parole) to the United States after temporary foreign travel, in order to resume the processing of his or her adjustment of status application. Presently, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issue the EAD and AP is a single card known as the combination card. Q: What are the Filing Fees to file the I-485, I-765 and I-131 together? A If you file Form I-485 to adjust your status as a permanent resident on or after July 30, 2007, no additional fees are required to file the application for employment authorization and the advance parole. You may file all three applications concurrently. For applicants aged between 14 and 78, the Filing and Biometrics Fee is $1070.00 For those 79 or older, the Filing Fee is $985.00. For minors under 14 and not filing with the I-485 of at last one parent, the fee is also $985.00. For those under 14 and filing with the I-85 of at least one parent, the filing fee is $635.00. For those filing as Refugees or on the basis of having been admitted to the US as a Refugee, no Filing Fee is required. Q: I already filed my application to adjust status under Form I-485. I did not know I could file the I-131 and I-765 together with my I-485. What do I do now? A: You may still file the I-131 and I-765 separately. When you file for the EAD and AP, make sure to
include in the application a copy of your I-797C, Notice of Action receipt for the Form I-485 as evidence that you are a pending adjustment applicant and that you paid the Filing Fee for the Form I-485. As such, you will be exempt from having to pay any fees for the separate applications under Form I-131 and Form I-765. Note: If you had filed your Form I-485 prior to July 30th, 2007, then you must remember to pay the Filing Fees associated with the Forms I-131 and I-765 when you submit these applications. The filing fees are $360 and $380 respectively. Q: What is the validity period for the EAD and or AP? A: Typically, the card will be valid for either one or two years. USCIS has the discretion to decide on the duration of the card and may also issue one for a shorter validity period depending on the circumstances of each case and information regarding immigrant visa availability. Q: My EAD and AP card will be expiring in about 5 months. When do I apply for the renewal of these benefits and what is the filing fee? I am between the ages of 14 and 78 years old? A: Typically, to request for a renewal of your EAD and AP, you should apply up to 120 days prior to the expiration date of the EAD and or AP. This is because it usually takes USCIS up to 90 days to process and approve the applications. There is no filing fee for renewal of EAD and or AP provided you apply by using the paper filing process. Q: I lost my EAD / AP combination card. My adjustment of status application is pending and I did pay the $1070 Filing Fee to file my I-485, I-765 and I-131. How do I replace my lost card? A: You will need to apply for a replacement card not a renewal. The filing fee to pay for the I-765 will be $380.00 and the Filing Fees for the I-131 for Advance Parole is $360.00. Q: Does having the Advance Parole card guarantee that I will be allowed to reenter the United States? How do I use this card? A: The Advance Parole card authorizes parole, not
admission to the United States. If you have Advance Parole, upon your arrival back to the US after foreign travel, you will need to present the card to the Customs and Border Protection officer at the port-of entry to request for parole. Just because you have Advance Parole does not guarantee that you will be paroled into the US. If you have been unlawfully present in the US for example, before you travel abroad and seek to return on parole, please consult with an immigration attorney for advice whether you may be denied parole because of grounds of inadmissibility. Q: I have H-1B status but have already filed for adjustment of status and have received the Advance Parole card. If I leave the US, which document do I have to use to enter back to the US – my H-1B visa or my Advance Parole document? A: If you enter the US using your Advance Parole document, you will be deemed to have lost your H-1B status. As such, it your H-1B is still valid, you may wish to use the H-1B visa instead unless there are some other reasons why using the visa would not be beneficial to you. newly elected Mayor of Sugar Land, was among the speakers of the evening. The event brought together people of a very diverse faith and religious background. It provided an opportunity for people of many different faiths in the Sugarland area to come and understand the true meaning of Islam and the significance of the holy month of Ramadan. The program was well conducted by two very dynamic female members: Sister Fatima Loya and Sister Alaa Shwaiki, of the MIC youth group. Some of the keynote speakers included Imam Tauqer of Maryam Islamic Center, Matt Kahn of Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, Ridhwan Saleh, Executive Director Islamic Society of Greater Houston and Joe Zimmerman, Mayor, Sugar Land. Matt Kahn, Associate Director, Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, shed light on the commonalities of the message of peace and harmony inherent to basic tenets of all faiths. Zimmerman spoke of the contributions of the Muslim-American community in the Sugar Land area, in particular, and also in main-
stream America. Ridhwan Saleh, ISGH, explained the Islamic Lunar calendar, its differences from the Gregorian calendar and how it impacts the timings of Ramadan each year. Concluding the Program Imam Tauqer delivered a very eloquent message of the essence of Islam being peace and savior of mankind. He offered his condolences for the victims of the tragic events in Orlando and explained how Islam prohibited the unjust murder of innocent human beings. He emphatically rejected the idea of cold blooded murderers, the likes of the Orlando shooter, hijacking the religion of Islam to justify their own psychopathic behaviors. Imam cited many examples of how Islam puts the safety and sanctity of human life above all things important to being a true Muslim. Imam commended the late boxing champ, Muhammad Ali, as being a true ambassador of Islam with a global following. The event was catered by Fadi’s Cuisine and the food itself presented a topic of great conversation among the guests as it was their first time experiencing Middle Eastern cuisine.

Orlando tragedy sadly becoming political opportunism “normal”, and waits for the next tragedy to occur, which authorities predict will occur but do not know when and where.
Chandra K. Mittal, Professor, Biological & Biomedical Sciences, HCC, Houston by Chandra K. Mittal
T
he recent Orlando terroristic attack, the deadliest in the recent US history has sadly turned into another routine political opportunism ignoring the human emotion and tragedy. It seems to be following an old principle of politics as succinctly put by Winston Churchill “Never Let a Good Crisis Go to Waste”. And this is exactly the kind of tendency that creates revulsion in people’s mind against the politicians as they come across insensitive to people’s pain and needs and more opportunistic and self-serving. They do not have to be so overt and quick to win the political points. But such is the reality of modern day politics in America where human tragedy is being exploited for political gains. Such tragedies usually play out in three basic stages. First, an unsuspecting gunman makes his way into a crowded public place, shots innocent people indiscriminately causing massive casualties, and is then taken out by the police. The second act is the media frenzy involving political leaders, political pundits and spin doctors, and the third is the US President making a carefully drafted statement to heal the national wounds. All this euphoria then subsides, the country goes back to so-called
Sunday, June 12, 2016 yet again turned out to be such a day in the United States when it woke up to the news of the deadliest mass shooting in a nightclub in Orlando, Florida killing 50 people (including the gunman) and injuring 52 causing major mayhem in a peaceful community. The nightclub patrons were guilty of enjoying their Saturday night with friends and relatives. The full depth and scope of the tragedy are still unfolding as details are emerging from survivors and the injured. Last few years have witnessed increased terroristic incidences the US and Europe with changing character but deadlier resulting in significant casualties. The frequency and intensity of such incidences makes one wonder if the authorities lack resources or resolve or have restrains on using tough measures due to domestic politics to prevent such incidents. One factor creating difficulty for law enforcement certainly appears to be the knowledge sophistication and the use of high-tech gadgets by the terrorists as was apparent from San Bernardino tragedy. As the operational modalities of terrorist attacks are evolving and changing, so are the strategies and policies of the nations to combat them. This directly plays into domestic politics of the effected countries. Over the years the character of international terrorism has changed from being State-sponsored to non-State private groups to now individually planned and executed like small enterprises. Both the Orlando tragedy and the San Bernardino mass shootings are direct testimony to the lethality of individuallyplanned operations.
On the US political front every time a terrorist incidence occurs on US soil, it is immediately followed by contentious debate among the politicians to prevent future attacks. But nothing gets really resolved as the “self-serving blame game” gets intensified along three controversial topics that are sacred “cows” for both Republicans as well as Democrats. These include Guns and their availability, Immigration and Homeland security. Of these the Gun control is the most controversial because of the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution which grants right to bear arms. Lately, since 911 same type of stalemate is being seen in the US Congress in policy debate over Immigration and Domestic surveillance matters. Complicating the situation in the present circumstance is also the upcoming US Presidential election where terrorist attacks and the public suffering has become an opportunity for politicians. But such temptations should be resisted. The political expediency that is being exhibited lately in the US needs some introspection. This is turning people off as people feel alienated and see politicians working for themselves in the adverse circumstances rather than for the common good. The greatness of a society indeed lies in the quality and character it exhibit towards its citizens in the time of adversity. US, with its ideals and promise of championing the cause of individual dignity has to resolve to reverse this “political opportunism” and regain its moral authority in the world to remain the leader that it truly is. Muni Seva Ashram: Awarded SEC Halts Scheme for Cutting Edge Technology Defrauding Pro Athletes
T
he Securities and Exchange Commission today announced fraud charges and emergency relief against an investment adviser accused of secretly siphoning millions of dollars from accounts he managed for professional athletes and investing their earnings in a cash-starved online sports and entertainment ticket business for which he has served on the Board of Directors.
Minister Piyush Goyal & Uday Dalal by Tanya Patel
M
uni Seva Ashram has come to be known for their quality education system, their top-rated cancer research hospital, and their unwavering desire to help those less fortunate. What few people may know is that Muni Seva Ashram (MSA) is also known for the cutting edge technologies that are being developed for the ashram. The ashram prides itself on being a self-sufficient community. According to www. greenashram.org (MSA’s website), sustainable development is defined as “economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural resources.” One of the prime examples in which MSA uses every part of these resources is seen within the Gaushalas or the protective shelters for the cows on the ashram. The cow’s sanctuary uses no chemical, pesticides, or herbicides. The cows provide clean milk to cancer patients, students and staff members, and guests of the ashram. Cow urine, a rich source of nitrogen, is used in farming, and cow dung is used
in renewable energy power houses. These bio gas plants, in turn, fuel the ashram’s kitchens and vehicles. Because the ashram is located in Goraj, a small village just outside the big city of Vadodara, providing steady electricity would have been a problem. A solar power plant was built to meet the lighting needs of the schools and the hospitals. Muni Seva Ashram’s path to a completely green environment caught the eye of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India. MSA was invited by the ministry to apply for an award because of the unique concepts regarding solar technology. MSA has been at the forefront of incorporating solar tech in various areas including, but not limited to: having the first solar fridge, solar air conditioning system, and solar hot water system. The ashram was among the first to have the Scheffler Cooking System installed by the creator himself in the early 1990’s. Wolfgang Scheffler, an inventor, developed a system
in which the sunlight enters a kitchen and strikes the cooking pot. It is this system that provides roughly 35,000 meals per day throughout the ashram. The seamless collaboration of many renewable energy systems have attracted thousands of visitors from around the world and has also been the inspiration for projects by PhD and masters students. On April 29, 2016, Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal, and New & Renewable Energy presented Muni Seva Ashram with 2 awards for their excellence in concentrated solar thermal technology and solar cooker excellence. By recognizing MSA along with several other organizations, Goyal hopes that India will be a leader towards clean energy rather than a follower. Deepak Gadhia and Uday Dalal, an MSA trustee, hopes that by receiving this prestigious award, more light will be shed on the ashram and the green technology and inspire others to “go green”.
The Commission filed its action on May 24, 2016, and on the same day obtained a court order to freeze the assets of the adviser, Ash Narayan of Newport Coast, California, as well as The Ticket Reserve Inc., its CEO Richard M. Harmon, and its Chief Operating Officer John A. Kaptrosky, all of whom are charged in the SEC’s complaint unsealed today in federal court in Dallas. The SEC also obtained appointment of a receiver over The Ticket Reserve. The SEC alleges that Narayan has transferred over $33 million from clients’ accounts to The Ticket Reserve, typically without their knowledge or consent and often using forged or unauthorized signatures. The Ticket Reserve became dependent upon the fraudulent cash infusions from Narayan’s unsuspecting clients to stay in business. In exchange, Narayan received nearly $2 million in hidden compensation from the struggling company. Most of this money is directly traceable to his clients’ stolen funds. According to the SEC’s complaint, The Ticket Reserve also made Ponzi-like payments to existing investors using money from new investors. Since being fired from the investment firm where he worked and losing access to the clients’ accounts, Narayan has been redirecting to The Ticket Reserve’s coffers the sham fees he received out of the money
misappropriated from client accounts. The SEC successfully secured the court-ordered asset freeze before Narayan could make a planned financial transaction on May 31. According to the SEC’s complaint: Narayan was a managing director in the California office of Dallas-based investment advisory firm RGT Capital Management. His involvement in the scheme began at least as early 2010. Narayan’s clients, including several professional athletes, trusted and relied upon Narayan to pursue safe, conservative investments that would not put their principal at risk. They realized as professional athletes with injury risks, that their earnings might occur within a short window. Besides failing to disclose the bulk of The Ticket Reserve investments to his clients and the fees he was receiving in exchange for investing their money, Narayan also failed to disclose other key conflicts of interest-including that he was a member of The Ticket Reserve’s Board of Directors and owned more than three million shares of company stock. Narayan also falsely claimed to be a CPA. Harmon and Kaptrosky participated in the scheme by making undisclosed finder’s fee payments to Narayan out of his clients’ funds and covertly describing them as “director’s fees” and “loans” in various TTR documents. Harmon and Kaptrosky also approved and executed Ponzilike payments, falsified and backdated documents, and created sham promissory notes between The Ticket Reserve and Narayan in attempts to further conceal the scheme. The
Honorable
Barbara
M. Lynn for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas granted the SEC’s request for a temporary restraining order and asset freeze against Narayan, The Ticket Reserve, Harman, and Kaptrosky, and appointed Michael Napoli, of Dykema Cox Smith, as a temporary receiver over the company. The SEC’s complaint alleges that Narayan, The Ticket Reserve, Harmon, and Kaptrosky violated Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 10(b) and Rule 10b-5 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The complaint also alleges that Narayan violated Sections 206(1) and 206(2) of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. The SEC seeks disgorgement of ill-gotten gains plus interest and penalties as well as preliminary and permanent injunctions. The SEC’s investigation was conducted by Michael A. Umayam, Keith J. Hunter, and Carol J. Hahn, and the case was supervised by David L. Peavler, Jessica B. Magee, and Eric R. Werner in the SEC’s Fort Worth office. The SEC’s litigation will be led by Christopher A. Davis and Ms. Magee. The SEC appreciates the assistance of the Lake Forest Police Department in serving the Court’s Orders on the Defendants and other relevant parties. SEC Complaint

arnatic music lovers were treated to a scintillating and one of a kind concert by the inimitable violin trio lead by the legendry, Padmabhushan T.N. Krishnan and joined by his gifted daughter and son Viji Krishnan Natarajan and Sriram Krishnan. Also on stage were their fellow artists T.S. Nandakumar on Mridangam and Chandrasekara Sharma on the Ghatam . The concert was arranged by the Classical Arts Society of Houston (CAS) and took place on Sunday June 12 at the Stafford Civic Center. A concert that has been in the planning stage for nearly two years on account of the busy schedules of all the artists involved proved to be well worth the time and efforts, being one of the best concerts presented by CAS.
Thirty-four percent of Houston children are considered overweight or obese compared to 29 percent of the general youth population, according to the Houston Department of Health and Human Services. As a result, the YMCA of Greater Houston has partnered with Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to combat this epidemic with a summer program called Kamp K’aana. Beginning June 12, kids will experience two weeks of healthy living tips and tools to help them change their lifestyles and lead healthier lives.
Padmabhushan T.N. Krishnan performs accompanied by his daughter and son Viji Krishnan Natarajan and Sriram Krishnan.
“Everyone at camp showed us that it is important to take our time eating and to avoid unhealthy foods and portions. I can control my cravings now,” said Timmy Tran, 11, who had a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the 95th percentile when he participated in the camp last summer.
Severe thunderstorms preceded the concert time; undeterred, the audience came to fill the auditorium to near capacity. During the concert no one knew if there were big rains outside; nor did anyone pay heed. The audience was reveling in the showers of beautiful ragas, songs and swaras from the 3 violins.
The program was designed by a team of specialists from TCH and BCM and is delivered by the YMCA of Greater Houston at YMCA Camp Cullen, near scenic Lake Livingston. Campers receive three meals a day and several snacks that are high in fiber and whole grains rather than sugar and fat. They also experience traditional camp ac-
Prof. T.N. He also has a very pleasant stage presence; a smile adorns his face all the time. The concert opened with Dikshitar’s song “Gajananayutam” on Lord Ganesha in Raga Chakravakam and was followed by a brisk rendition of “Nada Tanumanisham”. Viji and Sriram explored all corners of the raga well to the delight of the audience. During the thanam phase, they played ragas sahana, kapi and pilu. Each violinist took one raga to elaborate, though the
other two joined in to increase the beauty; TNK - Sahana, Viji - Pilu, and Sriram - Kapi. During kalpana swara phase the violinists gave the thala artists ample chance to echo the korvais. Nandakumar and Chandrasekar played excellently during their thani aavarthanam.
The trio delighted us with “Manasa Sancharare” in Sama, “Eppo Varuvaro” in Jonpuri, “Apududu”,a javali in Khamas, “Visveswara Darshan” in Sindhu Bhairavi, and Tillana in Jonpuri. The concert came to an end with Mangalam . The concert audience went home humming their favorite

He even took part in a kid’s triathlon.” While the average weight loss during the two-week program is 7.8 pounds, some kids have lost 50 pounds and more over longer periods of time by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Jacobs said. Kids ages 10-14 at or above the 95th percentile BMI who are interested in Kamp K’aana can visit kampkaana.org, any YMCA center, or call 281839-8472 to register. sangatis and reminiscing the beautiful phrases of music that touched one to the core. Clinton hits Trump at core: his business record
New York hedge fund manager found dead after arrest
But the latest news cycle unquestionably has been unkind to the real estate tycoon. He fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Monday, seeking a reboot as he prepares to battle with Clinton whose campaign is well ahead of Trump’s in terms of finances and organization. Trump has been hammered for making controversial statements after the Orlando massacre, including about Muslims, and for saying it would have been a “beautiful sight” if more people at the Florida club -- where drinks flowed -- were armed in order to shoot back at the attacker. His numbers have slid in several polls, and Republican leaders have continued to express ambivalence about their presumptive nominee.

ASHINGTON, | AFP | Tuesday 6/21/2016 -Hillary Clinton on Tuesday targeted her White House rival Donald Trump’s very rationale for being a competent president, painting the provocative billionaire as a “dangerous” and manipulative businessman who would sink the US economy. The Democratic flagbearer’s comprehensive condemnation of Trump’s business dealings came as the presumptive Republican nominee revealed unprecedented financial deficits heading into his general election push, the latest of several setbacks and selfinflicted wounds that have plunged his campaign into disarray. Clinton piled on in her speech in Ohio, an important swing state, where she argued that Trump’s lack of a plan to bring back manufacturing and other jobs could yank the nation back into recession. We can’t let him bankrupt America like we are one of his failed casinos,” she thundered in Columbus. “We can’t let him roll the dice with our children’s futures.” By laying into Trump’s corporate empire, Clinton aimed to disarm her rival’s potent claim that he can translate his business acumen into Oval Office success. “He’s written a lot of books about business. They all seem to end at chapter 11,” she quipped, referring to
the US legal code that addresses bankruptcy and reorganization. She claimed Trump had refused to pay some workers their due and had his own products manufactured overseas -- moves she argued punished hard-working Americans. He also “made a fortune filing bankruptcies and stiffing his creditors” in the process, leaving hundreds out of people out of work, Clinton said. “In America, we don’t begrudge people being successful, but we know they shouldn’t do it by destroying other people’s dreams.” Despite his long track record as a businessman, “it turns out he’s dangerous there, too,” Clinton said. “Just like he shouldn’t have his finger on the button,” she added, referring to the US nuclear arsenal, “he shouldn’t have his hands on our economy.” “Donald Trump’s ideas about the economy and the world will cause millions of Americans to lose their jobs,” Clinton said. - Seeking a reboot -Trump returned fire as Clinton spoke, arguing that she “surged” the trade deficit with China by 40 percent while serving as America’s top diplomat, a move he said cost Americans “millions of jobs.” In a bid to go on offense, Trump announced he would deliver a speech Wednesday addressing “the failed policies and bad judgment of crooked Hillary Clinton.”

- A ‘different’ campaign -The latest clash comes amid revelations that Trump’s campaign war chest lags woefully behind Clinton’s.
N
EW YORK, | AFP | Tuesday 6/21/2016 - A New York hedge fund manager charged last week with insider trading was found dead with a slashed neck in an apparent suicide, police said Tuesday.
Trump has just $1.3 million in cash on hand, according to reports filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission. Clinton’s campaign by contrast had $42 million as of May 31, its report showed.
Sanjay Valvani, 44, was found unconscious on the bedroom floor at home in the upscale neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights with a slash wound to his neck late on Monday afternoon, a police spokesman told AFP.
Trump insisted he could ply his own campaign with “unlimited” funds. “If need be, there could be unlimited ‘cash on hand’ as I would put up my own money, as I have already done through the primaries, spending over $50 million,” he said in a statement. He also said his campaign was prepared to embrace a new tone as it geared for battle with Clinton. “I think it’s time now for a different kind of a campaign” than the lean operation that helped win the primary race, Trump told Fox News late Monday as he justified Lewandowski’s departure. Trump also brushed off his difficulty in earning Republican leadership support, telling NBC he might not even need their blessing. “I may be better winning it the opposite way than the more traditional way,” he said. But a revolt of sorts appeared to be brewing at next month’s Republican National Convention.
“We hope for the sake of his family and his memory that it will not be forgotten that the charges against him were only unproven accusations and he had always maintained his innocence,” they said. Valvani surrendered to police last Tuesday in connection with an alleged 2005 to 2011 scheme to obtain confidential information from the Food and Drug Administration about pending drug approvals to trade in pharmaceutical securities.
He was found by his 44-year-old wife. The knife and a brief, handwritten note were recovered at the scene. A medical examiner will determine the official cause of death, police said.
The Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that he reaped unlawful profits of nearly $32 million for hedge funds investing in healthcare securities by insider trading on tips he received.
His defense lawyers Barry Berke and Eric Tirschwell called his death “a horrible tragedy that is difficult to comprehend.” They paid tribute to Valvani as a loving father, husband, son and brother.
He was charged on five counts, including security and wire fraud. The most serious charges carried a maximum sentence of 20 years if he had been convicted.
As many as 400 of the party’s 2,472 delegates who formally elect the Republican nominee have expressed support for a movement to stop Trump, according to The Washington Post. Trump meanwhile met Tuesday with about 1,000 evangelical Christians in an effort to win over the crucial voting bloc. “He came across as reasonable, not
reckless,” Catholic Vote president Brian Burch was quoted by Time magazine as saying. Trump’s campaign also announced an evangelical executive advisory board, featuring prominent conservative religious figures including psychologist and author James Dobson, who has courted controversy over his strong position against gays.

Thousands of yogis hit Times Square to welcome summer
N
EW YORK, AFP , 6/21/2016 - Following a long-held tradition, thousands of yoga fans gathered in New York’s Times Square on Monday to mark the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.
During the 14th edition of the annual event, yogis transformed the famous intersection in one of the world’s busiest cities into a huge outdoor yoga lesson surrounded by cars, construction and the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. The first lesson began at 5:00 am (0900 GMT), and the last at 7:30 pm. All were free and open to yoga practitioners of all levels. There was a heavy police presence. Thousands of yoga mats were distributed for the get-together, covering crosswalks. Last year, during the first international yoga day designated by the United Nations, some 17,000 people participated.

Top trends from Milan menswear shows
Sporty - Ready for Rio Olympics
Let’s party - Dsquared2 duo Dean and Dan Caten by Laure BRUMONT
M
ilan, Italy | AFP | Top trends from the Milan menswear Spring-Summer 2017 fashion shows, which concluded here on Tuesday: - Let’s party The future of exclusively menswear catwalk shows is in doubt but the cult of the ‘see and be seen party’ is alive and well. Highlights this time included Dsquared2 duo Dean and Dan Caten’s bash in their own Ceresio restaurant, which boasts spectacular views of the Milanese skyline. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana treated the crowds outside their show to glasses of bubbly before hosting their party at Bistrot Martini, where social media celebrity Cameron Dallas was the guest of honour. At the same time, Philipp Plein was throwing a basket-
ball-themed soiree with rapper Busta Rhymes and Paris Hilton DJ-ing. Miuccia Prada meanwhile opted for a more low-key approach, throwing a dinner at her contemporary art foundation for 300 of her friends, including actors Jessica Chastain and Willem Dafoe. - Unisex The merging of men and women’s fashion continues apace. Men in skirts and dresses is nothing new for Vivienne Westwood but the trend was also apparent at more traditionally ‘virile’ marques: Dsquared2 sent out its models in extraordinary thigh-high boots worthy of a drag queen. And Gucci’s last menswear show before it merges its collections was marked by the androgyny that has come to define the brand under Alessandro Michele. - Outdoor is in The fresh air could be
breathed in everywhere with numerous designers taking their cue from wholesome activities like camping, hiking and climbing. Next summer’s fashionable man feels the need to take refuge in nature, using silence and meditation to offset the stress of modern life. See Prada’s backpacks and flasks, Moncler’s sleeping bags and multi-pocketed clothes, Ferragamo’s Sahara gilets, Breton-fisherman yellow waxed rainwear at Gucci and walking sandals and socks at Versace. - Sporty With Euro 2016 underway and the Rio Olympics on the horizon, sport was a big inspiration for numerous designers. Notable examples included skate-boarders at Emporio Armani, basketball-style shorts at Philipp Plein and an Olympic-themed collection by Dirk Bikkembergs, whose show in the Caimi swimming pool -- a renovated jewel of the 1930s -- included a brief water polo training session.

New York legislature okays fantasy sports bill by John BIERS
N
EW YORK, | AFP | 6/18/2016 - The fantasy sports industry was on the verge of a major win after the New York State Senate early Saturday approved a bill to legalize and regulate the virtual competitions. The legislation, which had been opposed by gambling critics, now needs only to be endorsed by Governor Andrew Cuomo after winning approval Friday from the assembly. Fantasy sports advocates believe Cuomo will sign the bill, but he has not taken a position. If enacted, the bill would permit the largest and best capitalized operators, FanDuel and DraftKings, to return to the New York market in time for the critical American football season. The two companies halted business in the state after New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sued the companies, arguing the games violate the state’s anti-gambling laws. New York has been seen as a key bellwether in other big US states, including California, Florida and Texas. In fantasy sports, contestants pick a fantasy roster of professional athletes from leagues such as the National Football League and Major League Baseball. As the real games take place on the field, the standings of fantasy players are ranked based on actual plays on the field. Entrants must pay a fee to enter. The biggest competitions award prizes of $1 million or more. The industry had been in a period of torrid growth prior to the challenge last fall from Schneiderman, which sparked similar crackdowns in a number of other states, including Illinois and Texas. FanDuel hailed the bill, which

The New York State Senate approved a bill to legalize and regulate virtual competitions on fantasy sports websites such as FanDuel, permitting the largest companies to return to the New York market in time for the American football season (AFP Photo/Scott Olson). passed the Senate by 45-17 and the assembly by 91-22. “New York fantasy sports fans rallied –- with more than 100,000 emails and thousands of phone calls to legislators –and legislators heard them and responded,” said FanDuel chief executive Nigel Eccles. “The bill represents a thoughtful legislative process where bipartisanship and willingness to compromise carried the day and we are extremely hopeful Governor Cuomo will sign the bill.” “I believe this is only the beginning of what has become a revolution in how fans experience sports,” said DraftKings chief executive Jason Robins, adding that he was hopeful Cuomo “will soon sign the bill into law.” - Gambling or not? -The bill taxes the industry and explicitly states that fantasy sports is not gambling, even as it places oversight of fantasy sports under the New York state gaming commission. The measure also includes a number of requirements similar to those casinos, such as criminal background checks of
fantasy sports registrants, bans on participation by minors and toll-free numbers to call for those those seeking help for an addiction to gambling. For the fiercest critics of the measure, none of that is sufficient however. “You’ve got to tie yourself in a pretzel to somehow say this is not gambling,” said Thomas Abinanti, a Democratic assemblyman who opposed the bill. But Dean Murray, a Republican in the Assembly and a DraftKings account holder, countered that the games differ from gambling because they favor deep knowledge of pro sports and are not solely based on luck. He likened the practice to the day-trading of stocks, another vital industry, and said New York was wise to encourage a growing industry that will garner revenue for the state.
NGLEWOOD, Colo., June 2, 2016 – Sling TV and DISH today announced a long-term renewal agreement with Asia TV USA, Ltd., part of the “Zee” group from India and a leading provider of South Asian programming. In addition to renewing the 10 Zee-branded channels already offered on Sling TV and DISH, the new agreement includes the addition of 27 new Zee channels such as &TV, Living Foodz, Zee Bangla, Zee Tamizh and Zee Cinema HD. As part of the agreement, Sling TV and DISH will be the exclusive providers in the U.S. of Zee’s premium on-demand library, which includes movies and over 400 additional popular video titles. Over time, Sling TV will become the exclusive over-the-top (OTT) provider in the U.S. for all but one of Zee’s South Asian channels. In the coming months, Zee will transition viewers from its directto-consumer services to Sling TV or to authenticated access only. “Our agreement with Zee enables us to provide a vast amount of entertainment to fans of South Asian content, while
also giving customers a more streamlined way to access and enjoy both linear and on-demand content,” said Chris Kuelling, senior vice president of programming for Sling TV and DISH. “Zee shares our goal of growing the South Asian market, and together we are able to better serve this community, as well as the other language groups served by Zee.” “DISH has been a natural partner and ally for the last 18 years, and Sling TV is by far the most comprehensive OTT service available to our target audience” said Sameer Targe, business head, Zee Americas. “The U.S. is a mature pay-TV market and operating a directto-consumer business can be a low or negative margin initiative, so it made good business sense to align our growth strategy by expanding our offerings and partnering with Sling TV as our chosen OTT platform.” To broaden the options available to fans of South Asian content, Sling TV and DISH are launching a new “Hindi Gold Pack,” which will contain all of the Zee Hindi channels, plus other leading Hindi channels. In addition, &TV, one of
the most requested Hindi channels by current Sling TV and DISH customers, will be added to the existing lineup. Zee’s ondemand content will be available at no additional charge to DISH and Sling TV subscribers with the Hindi Gold Pack. As part of the agreement, DISH and Sling TV will also add two Spanish-language channels, Z Living Español and Zee TV Español, and two Brazilian channels, Zee TV Portuguese and Z Living Portuguese, to their respective line-ups. The new Spanish channels can be found on DISH in the DishLATINO Clasico, DishLATINO Dos, DishLATINO Plus and DishLATINO Max packages, and the Best of Spanish TV package on Sling Latino. Zee Alwan and Zee Aflam, two popular Arabic channels, will also launch in the DISH Arabic Super Elite and the Arabic Mosaic Pack on Sling TV. More information on Sling TV’s international packages can be found here, and information on Sling Latino packages can be found here. Details of DISH’s packages can be found here.

according to the leading social network. “We have generated good excitement around content for PS4, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House told AFP at E3. House saw potential for PlayStation VR to go beyond gaming to becoming “a full-fledged brand new medium bridging to the Japanese entertainment giant’s film and television offerings. There may even be opportunity for Sony to make cameras tailored to the technology. “It has tremendous potential not just in games, but with a multitude of applications, House said of virtual reality. - Celebrity players -E3 was also a showcase for the soaring popularity of Twitch, YouTube Gaming and other online stages for video game play and commentary, along with the rise of the celebrity player. More than 70,000 people took part in E3 this year, while another 20,000 attended a nearby E3 Live fan event for the public, according to the ESA.

University graduates face higher brain tumor risk: study by Marlowe HOOD ARIS (AFP)- People with at least three years of higher education are at greater risk for cancerous brain tumors than those with no more than nine years of schooling, perplexed researchers said Tuesday. “There is a 19 percent increased risk that university-educated men could be diagnosed with glioma,” said Amal Khanolkar, a scientist at the Institute of Child Health in London and lead author of a study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community. For women, he said, the risk rose by 23 percent. “It was a surprising result which is difficult to explain,” Khanolkar told AFP. Concretely, the increase in risk is minimal because such brain tumors are rare. At the lowest level of education, the chances of glioma were reported at five in 3,000. At the other end of the educational spectrum, the odds in-
and
creased to six in 3,000. But the question remained as to whether the gap -- no matter how small -- was real and, if so, what caused it. Earlier research exploring a possible link between education or social level, on the one hand, and the frequency of brain tumors, on the other, had been inconclusive. To “put to rest” these conflicting findings, Khanolkar and colleagues at the Karolinska Institute medical university in Stockholm used a new approach. Rather than comparing a small number of brain tumor patients with healthy individuals, they sifted through the health records of 4.3 million adults tracked by the Swedish public health system from 1993 to 2011. The researchers distinguished between three kinds of brain tumors -- two of them non-cancerous -- with different causes. The strong link between edu-
cation level and tumor incidence held for all three types, but was strongest for deadly gliomas. Interestingly, an even higher risk gap was found between low-income manual labourers and high-income men and women who did not work with their hands. - Why? Gliomas are malignant brain tumors which grow rapidly and cause severe symptoms, including migraines, nausea and memory loss. The survival rate is very low. The study did not seek to explain the link between higher education and tumors, nor did it consider the potential impact of environmental and lifestyle factors, such as smoking or alcohol consumption. The most common explanation for risk levels that rise with years spent in the classroom is that people with a higher education or income “have a better awareness of symptoms,” Kha-
nolkar said. This would mean they are more likely to seek help and receive a correct diagnosis. But while this may be true in a country with a health system that clearly favours the well-todo, the argument is far less convincing in the Swedish context, the researchers said. “Sweden has a universal, tax-based health care system,” said Khanolkar. Everybody has roughly the same access to treatment. Moreover, he added, gliomas form very rapidly -- often within 48 hours -- and are excruciatingly painful. “The symptoms are not avoidable -- you can’t sit at home and not seek care,” he said. To further their probe, the team will canvass an updated version of the database for possible correlations between eth-
nicity and brain tumor risk. Underlying genetic variation in populations from different geographic regions -- where certain mutations are more or less common -- could be a factor, Khanolkar acknowledged. One expert, commenting on the study, pointed to other possible culprits. “Two additional factors which might be of interest in this context are height and, in women, hormone replacement therapy,” said James Green, a clinical epidemiologist at the University of Oxford. Risk of brain tumors -- as of most cancers -- is higher in taller people, and taller people tend to be richer and more educated,” he noted. “Hormone replacement therapy increases risk of brain tumors, and its use tends to vary by socio-economic group.”
Another part of this team is Team Screwdrivers Outreach. The objective of TSO is to spread STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to young students from underprivileged backgrounds. TSO had undertaken 3 projects for the same. The first project was at the Nehru Science Centre’s Innovation Festival in January 2016. Attendees were shown the ROV and engaged in Science & logic-based games. With over 25000 attendees (students, parents, teachers) it was a huge hit. 2nd project was for school students, where members of Team Screwdrivers Outreach had visited various school, conducted workshops and taught the students to make their own solar charger. The 3rd project was a Sit & Draw Competition. The theme given to the students was Alternate Energy or NASA. Students came up with ingenious drawings combining these two themes. Team Screwdrivers has previously been felicitated by former President, late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Ace Nuclear Scientist Dr. Anil Kakodkar, record holding astronaut Sunita Williams, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis, for innovative design and cost-effective implementation.

M
ADRID - Spain is coaxing Indian moviemakers to use its colourful fiestas and historic monuments as settings for their films, in a move to grab a bigger share of India’s fast-growing overseas tourism market.
- Stars in ad campaign -Kapoor, 59, best known internationally for his role in the 2008 film “Slumdog Millionaire”, said during a visit to Madrid in March to promote the Bollywood Oscars that he is “looking forward to coming back again and again to Spain”.
As part of its bid to lure visitors from the world’s second most populous country, Madrid will host next weekend the annual International Indian Film Academy awards, dubbed the “Bollywood Oscars”.
Tourism is crucial for the Spanish economy, accounting for around 11 percent of gross domestic product and one in nine jobs, according to the tourism ministry.
In global tourism, Spain ranks as the third most visited country, but it now wants to diversify its tourism base beyond the traditional northern European sunseekers that account for the bulk of its visitors. Among the Bollywood stars who will attend the awards ceremony in Spain will be hunky Indian actor Hrithik Roshan, the green-eyed star of the 2011 coming-of-age movie “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, which was produced in close collaboration with the Spanish tourism promotion agency, Turespana. The film about three friends on a pre-marriage road trip across Spain includes scenes at “La Tomatina” festival in the town of Bunol, where halfnaked revellers hurl mushy tomatoes at each other, as well as at Pamplona’s San Fermin bull running festival. With scenes also set in Barcelona, Seville and the beaches of the Costa Brava, the movie was the first major Indian production to shoot extensively in various locations in Spain. It was also the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011. “There was an immediate impact in the number of people requesting entry visas to travel to Spain,” the director of the London office of Turespana, Enrique Ruiz de Lera, who led the agency’s talks with the producers of the movie, told AFP. The year after its release, 60,444 Indians visited Spain, nearly double the 2011 figure, according to the industry and tourism ministry. Last year 85,000 Indians visited Spain. Lonely Planet in 2013 launched a guide to Spain aimed specifically at the Indian market and travel agencies
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation predicts Asian powerhouse India will account for 50 million outbound tourists by 2020, up from just 18 million in 2014.

India’s ambassador to Spain, Vikram Misri, said the film “was singlehandedly responsible for making Spain a household name in India and increasing tourism from India”. - Cruise ship movie Turespana suggested locations for filming but gave no direct financial aid to cover the cost of making the movie, Ruiz de Lera said.
Turespana regularly takes part in film location fairs in India to pitch the tax breaks and other incentives available to movie producers who shoot in Spain. Since “Zindagi”, another “five or six” Indian films have been shot in Spain although none was as popular at the box office, the director of the Mumbai office of Turespana, Ignacio
Ducasse, told AFP. They include one by “Zindagi” director Zoya Akhtar --- “Dil Dhadakne Do” featuring Bollywood star Anil Kapoor -- which was filmed on a ship belonging to Pullmantur, Spain’s biggest cruise operator. The comedy-drama about a dysfunctional family on a 10-day Mediterra-
Turespana plans to create an ad campaign to appeal to this rising tide of tourists using images of Bollywood celebrities enjoying themselves in Madrid at the awards show. The ceremony itself is expected to bring 15,000 visitors to the Spanish capital during the week of the show. “We are counting that the arrival of several thousand Indian friends for the (awards) ceremony will help bring millions of their compatriots in the coming years,” Spain’s secretary of state for foreign affairs, Ignacio Ybanez, said earlier this year. AFP
Instead it helped secure permits to film at key sites and negotiate deals on hotel rooms and transportation for the crew to lower production costs. “We helped a lot with contacts so filming in Spain was easy,” Ruiz de Lera said. In return the producers of the film agreed to include a short advertisement before the start of the movie promoting Spain by award-winning Spanish director Julio Medem. Spain and India signed a film coproduction agreement the year after “Zindagi” was released.

Very hot drinks ‘probably’ cause cancer: UN agency by Mariëtte Le Roux ery hot drinks probably increase the risk of cancer, a UN agency said Wednesday, but coffee -- once feared to be a carcinogen -- is safe if enjoyed at “normal” temperatures. Tea and mate, a popular South American herbal infusion, may also be harmful if drunk hotter than 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reported. “It doesn’t matter what the liquid is,” said epidemiologist Dana Loomis, who took part in a review of the world’s most popular hot beverages. “What matters is the temperature.” With more than 1.1 billion cups of coffee consumed around the world every day, the industry welcomed the beverage’s removal from the list of “possibly cancerogenic” substances. “Today we can brew or buy a cup with even more confidence thanks to science,” said Bill Murray, president of the US-based National Coffee Association. The Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, which closely tracks research in this field, said coffee is typically consumed below 60 C. “IARC’s assessment on very hot beverages is therefore not associated with normal coffee consumption,” secretary general Roel Vaessen said in a statement. The IARC amassed all the available scientific literature -- more than 1,000 studies -- on cancer and coffee or mate, also popular in the Middle East. Both drinks had been classified as “possibly cancerogenic to humans” since 1991, when the last evaluation was done. But evidence gathered since then could not link either drink -- at “normal serving temperature” -- to an elevated cancer risk, said the IARC, an agency of the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO). For some types of cancer, there are clues that coffee may even be beneficial. A few studies, the agency said, showed a positive association with a lower risk

f you stay overnight in the hospital, your costs and coverage will depend on whether you have inpatient status or outpatient status in the hospital. Staying overnight in the hospital does not make you a hospital inpatient. You only become an inpatient after your doctor formally admits you to the hospital. In general, doctors will only admit you if they expect you will need to stay at least 2 days overnight in the hospital. Part A covers most of your care when you have inpatient status. A review of over 1,000 studies concluded that drinking “very hot” beverages was “probably carcinogenic to humans”, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said (AFP Photo/Wakil Kohsar). of cancer of the uterus, liver and breast. Taken together, the available data suggested “there is inadequate evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of coffee drinking,” it concluded. As for mate -- typically drunk piping hot -- the IARC found that high temperature, not the drink itself, was probably behind an observed link with cancer of the gullet -- the pipe that transports food and fluids from the throat to the stomach. Mate is often sipped through a metal straw that delivers the infusion directly to the throat. “The single study that examined cold mate drinking showed no association with oesophageal cancer,” the agency said. This prompted the reviewers to look at research into cancer and hot beverages other than mate. In places such as China, Iran, Turkey and South America, tea or mate is traditionally drunk at about 70 C, as are milky teas in parts of Africa and central Asia. Many of these regions have elevated gullet cancer rates. The data pointed to “significantly increased relative risks for drinking very hot tea and very hot beverages,” the agency found.
And in lab studies, water at 65-70 C boosted oesophageal tumours in mice and rats. The analysis concluded that “very hot” beverages were “probably cancerogenic to humans”. Partly due to a lack of research, the IARC could not make any finding for drinking very hot water. “It is too speculative at this point,” Loomis told journalists prior to the report’s release. The research had taken account of lifestyle factors that could have skewed the data, such as participants’ alcohol or tobacco use -- high risk factors for oesophageal cancer. The analysis does not measure the degree of risk associated with drinking very hot tea or coffee. According to the WHO, cancer of the food pipe accounts for about 400,000 deaths out of eight million total cancer deaths every year. Outside experts pointed out that most people in Europe and the United States contracted a different type of oesophageal cancer to those in Asia and South America. “Besides, most people in the UK drink tea with milk, which lowers the temperature of the drink to a safe level,” Tim Un“We are a caregiver derwood, a proinformation and fessor in surgery at the University advocacy website that of Southampton, all Texans could use” said via the Science Media Cen• SENIORS FOCUSED WEBSITE tre. However, when you are in the emergency room or in the hospital under observation, you are usually an outpatient. You may be under observation if your doctor is keeping an eye on you to decide whether or not to admit you. Observation services may look and feel exactly like inpatient services. Observation can last just a few hours or longer. Part B covers your care, including observation services, when you have outpatient status. Whether your care gets covered under Part A or Part B makes a difference. You will likely pay more for care if it’s considered outpatient rather than inpatient. It also effects whether you may qualify for Medicare to pay for your stay in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) after you leave the hospital. See below for more information. Your patient status can change during your stay. Ask if you are an inpatient or outpatient repeatedly. If you are unable to ask this yourself, your family members and caregivers can ask for you. Read below to learn about your costs for hospital care as an inpatient or outpatient. The costs discussed below apply to those with Original Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, your costs in the hospital may be different. Contact your plan for information about what you pay for an inpatient or outpatient hospital stay. Costs for inpatient hospital care When you are admitted to a hospital as an inpatient, you pay a one-timedeductible for most hospital care provided, and then have no copayments for the first 60 days. Medicare Part A covers nurse’s services, medically necessarymedications, X-rays, supplies, appliances, and equipment the hospital provides for you to use during your inpatient hospital stay. Medicare Part B covers doctors’ services you receive in the hospital. You usually owe a separate 20 percentcoinsurance for these doctors’ services. Your status as a hospital inpatient may qualify you for Medicare to pay for a SNF stay if you need it after you leave the hospital. In order to qualify for a Medicare-covered SNF stay, you must have been a hospital inpatient for at least 3 days and meet other requirements. The day you become an inpatient counts toward the qualifying days; the day the hospital discharges you does not count to-

Costs and coverage for outpatient hospital care If you are an outpatient during your hospital stay, Medicare Part B covers most of your services. You typically pay a coinsurance for each medical service you receive in the hospital after you meet the Part B deductible. For example, you will have separate charges for emergency room care, observation care, x-rays and lab tests. You must also pay the coinsurance for physician services you receive. Physician services include any time you spent with a physician while you were in the hospital, even if that physician was not your primary doctor or surgeon. Original Medicare Part B generally covers 80 percent of the cost of most services you receive after you have met your yearly deductible. In most cases, you are responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent coinsurance. When Part B covers your hospital care, you may have higher costs than if Part A covers your stay. You may have multiple coinsurances. Each individual copayment must be less than the Part A deductible ($1,288 in 2016). However, if you add up the coinsurances for each service the total could be higher than the Part A deductible. Part B will not cover the cost of your prescription medications that you routinely take. You will need to get them covered by Part D. If the hospital pharmacy is not in your Part D plan’s network, you typically have higher out of pocket costs than you would at an in-network pharmacy. You will need to pay the hospital for these medications and then send the bill to your Part D to pay its share of the costs, The days spent as an outpatient do not qualify you for a SNF stay. As a result, you will need to pay the full cost your SNF stay. Medicare Part B may pay for certain skilled services (like physical therapy) you receive while staying in the SNF. Olli, a 3D printed, self-driving minibus, to hit the road in US

Musk sees $1 trillion Tesla as shares drop over SolarCity deal
by Rob Lever
N
ATIONAL HARBOR - A new maker of self-driving vehicles burst onto the scene Thursday in partnership with IBM’s supercomputer platform Watson, and it’s ready to roll right now. The vehicle -- a 3D-printed minibus called “Olli” capable of carrying 12 people -- was unveiled by Arizonabased startup Local Motors outside the US capital city Washington. Olli was designed as an on-demand transportation solution that passengers can summon with a mobile app, like Uber rides. And it can be “printed” to specification in “micro factories” in a matter of hours. Olli will be demonstrated in National Harbor, Maryland, over the next few months with additional trials expected in Las Vegas and Miami. Local Motors is also in talks to test the vehicles in dozens of cities around the world including Berlin, Copenhagen and Canberra. Even though Google and several automakers see several years of testing before deploying autonomous cars, Local Motors co-founder and chief executive John Rogers said this vehicle is ready to go into service as soon as regulations allow it. “The technology has been ready -fielding it is what has been hard,” he said in an interview with AFP. By “fielding,” Rogers said Local Motors can design and make the vehicles to specification and offer a service to local governments or other buyers. “Local Motors is about selling (the vehicles) into the markets that are ready now,” he said. Rogers said the company has an advantage over other systems because it is building the vehicles from the ground up, and producing most components with 3D printers. “We hope to be able to print this vehicle in about 10 hours and assemble it in another hour,” he said. He envisions hundreds of “microfactories” producing the vehicles around the world. The privately held company with
“Olli” an autonomous shuttle is seen at the Local Motors facility at the National Harbor in Maryland on June 16, 2016. about 45 investors can easily revamp its design based on what a customer wants, and lacks the large infrastructure costs of traditional automakers, according to Rogers. - The Watson experience -The driving is controlled by a system developed by Local Motors with several software and tech partners. IBM is not doing the driving but is providing the user interface so passengers can have “conversations” with Olli. “Watson is bringing an understanding to the vehicle,” said IBM’s Bret Greenstein. “If you have someplace you need to be you can say that in your own words.” It marks IBM’s first venture in fully autonomous driving, although it has worked with other automotive partners on technology solutions. Greenstein said IBM sees Olli as “the first complete solution” for autonomous driving, and makes use of Watson’s cognitive computing power. Using “natural language” recognition can help create “a relationship between the passenger” and the vehicles, Greenstein said. “A vehicle that understands human language, where you can walk in and say, ‘I’d like to get to work,’ that lets you as a passenger relax and enjoy your journey,” he said.
The vehicle relies on more than 30 sensors and streams of data from IBM’s cloud. With Watson, passengers can ask about how the vehicle works, where they are going, and why Olli is making specific driving decisions. And it can answer the dreaded driver question “Are we there yet?” It also can offer recommendations for popular restaurants or historical sites based on the personal preferences of the passenger. “Cognitive computing provides incredible opportunities to create unparalleled, customized experiences for customers, taking advantage of the massive amounts of streaming data from all devices connected to the Internet of Things, including an automobile’s myriad sensors and systems,” said IBM’s Harriet Green in a statement. The company said Las Vegas has purchased two of the vehicles and Miami-Dade County is exploring a pilot program in which several autonomous vehicles would be used to transport people around the Florida region. Rogers said the company has had discussions in at least 50 countries where there is interest in new transportation solutions. “There is a long list of cities that are interested,” he said.
Oil prices dip ahead of US inventories data, Brexit vote
N
EW YORK - Oil prices fell modestly Tuesday after a two-day rally as dealers awaited the latest report on US crude inventories and Britain’s crucial vote on European Union membership this week.
mediate (WTI) for July delivery fell 52 cents to $48.85 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Markets were on tenterhooks two days before Britain’s EU referendum on Thursday. New polls showed Tuesday the vote was still too close to call between supporters favoring remaining in the EU and those backing an exit.
“Profit-taking ahead of US inventories data is definitely one of the reasons why crude prices have pulled back, especially since prices had risen rather sharply in the previous two trading days,” said City Index analyst Fawad Razaqzada.
“It’s a pullback from the boost we saw yesterday that was heavily influenced by optimism about the Brexit vote, optimism they would not exit, in the sense that would help capital markets around the world, certainly in Europe,” said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.
Crude futures pared losses that had pushed the WTI futures contract down more than $1 a barrel earlier in the session.

In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August, the global benchmark, slipped three cents to $50.62 a barrel.
“July WTI crude oil expires today, and so trading in that particular instrument may see some volatility related to thinning volumes... which may be independent of wider market conditions,” said Tim Evans of Citi
T
esla Motors Inc (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Wednesday that the proposed acquisition of SolarCity Corp (SCTY.O) could eventually push the electric car maker’s valuation to $1 trillion, but investors were skeptical. Shares of Tesla were down nearly 7 percent at $204.50, putting its market capitalization at $29.8 billion. The much smaller SolarCity was up nearly 9 percent at $23.01, valuing the U.S. market leader in residential rooftop solar panels at $2.2 billion. Tesla on Tuesday offered to buy SolarCity in a stock deal worth as much as $2.8 billion. “I have no doubt about this - zero,” Musk, a major shareholder of both companies, said on a conference call with analyst before markets opened on Wednesday. “We should have done it sooner.” Barclays auto analyst Brian Johnson disputed that view in an overnight note to investors, saying the proposed merger had “little in the way of synergies (and) much in the way of cash burn,” with “uncertain growth/cash prospects” for the combined companies. “It is even more clear that Tesla will need additional cash raises” to continue its expansion of electric car and battery production, Johnson said. Musk, however, said the combination of SolarCity’s solar panels with Tesla’s electric vehicles and stationary storage batteries was “what the world needs, the ultimate solution” to a sustainable-energy future. “As a combined automotive and
power storage and power generation company, the potential is there for Tesla to be a trillion-dollar market cap company,” he added. The two companies already are intertwined. Musk owns 19 percent of Tesla and 22 percent of Solar City, and he sits on the boards of both companies. SolarCity founder and CEO Lyndon Rive and his brother Peter, the company’s chief technology officer and co-founder, are Musk’s first cousins. SolarCity regularly posts quarterly losses, and its stock has fallen more than 50 percent this year in a highly competitive market. The company has more than $6 billion in liabilities, including debt. Musk said SolarCity would post positive cash flow in the next three to six months and would not have a material impact on Tesla’s future cash needs or expectation to be cash-flow positive by year-end. Musk said costs for both companies would go down significantly after the merger, but he did not give specifics. Among the expected synergies, he said SolarCity stores could display Tesla electric cars and storage batteries but probably would not handle vehicle sales. Tesla General Counsel Todd Maron said he expected shareholders of both companies to vote on the deal in the next few months. Futures. Traders also appeared cautious ahead of the US Department of Energy’s report on the country’s petroleum stockpiles on Wednesday. US commercial crude inventories are expected to have declined by 1.5 million barrels last week, according to a survey of experts by Bloomberg News. US crude stockpiles remain at record-high levels amid a global market awash in supply.

Stay on good terms with allies that need your advice. You can best exploit that potential with your business contacts. A well tuned proposal will get a green light. The changes will continue, moving into a more understandable pattern. Allow those capable to take over while you take care of yourself for a while. Respect your opponent without being afraid of them.
If you are not happy with what’s happening, put your foot down, express your feelings and it will stop. Let your intuition guide your topics and you’ll breeze through any discussion. Few expect this kind of strategy, which is good news for you. Instead of throwing a tantrum, calmly provide another reason for your stance. After all, happiness should be your bottom line. You need to loosen up the restraints you feel & try to stretch the possibilities. You may find that your limits will move further than you expected.
Capricorn (KH,J) 22 Dec to 20 Jan
Cancer (D,H) 21 June to 22 July Your timing will be perfect, your style is Unique but your anger will be counterproductive to your objectives. Others may need to vent their emotions, but it won’t help your situation at all. You need to use your intellect and philosophy to find your answers. You may be asking a question that has no answer. You may be stating the obvious, but for others you will be opening previously locked doors. Dialogue is the first step to understanding more about others. You’ll receive an unexpected gift.
You need to look at things from a wider perspective. New experiences will find their way into your life. An early start to the week will increase your chances for success. Your timing still isn’t perfect, but if you’re determined, everything will move along fine at it’s own pace. When your breakthrough comes late in the week, you may want to be alone with your thoughts. Swimming by your self is much better than sinking. So, much the better, if everyone wants to do their own thing.
Aquarius (G,S,SH) 21 Jan to 19 Feb
Leo (M) 23 July to 22 August You will remain active & attached with family, friends & social activities. Make waves at work & meetings with your ideas and plans, and take off in new directions by picking up a new skill or trying new strategies. In your personal life, speak your mind or heart to others and institute growth in relationships. Lots of things happening this week & you won’t want to miss any of it. Try to complete any work you have early in the week, so you can focus on family. Use diplomacy or conflict could develop if you seem too unyielding.
You are very kind and your world has plenty of room for others who share your ideals. You need to divert your feelings by making peace with what has happened in the past. You know that you may have to pay others for their help, but you know it’ll be well worth it. Use your imagination to find ways to attract more followers. Your voice will be very convincing. Others will volunteer their time willingly, not realizing that you have been manipulating them.
Pisces (D,CH,Z) 20 Feb to 20 March
Virgo (P) 23 August to 22 September A new relation will develop from some past memories. Your heart will prevail over your ego. Go ahead, break away from others preconceived ideas of who you should be and start to dream. The confusion of change is far better than losing new opportunities. A friend will appear where you most need and least expect. Strong influences will move you towards making a quick decision. Be direct and embrace the inevitable rather than trying to postpone it. By acting now, you’ll be able to compromise so that everyone gets what they want.

Pay attention to your appearance and hold your head up high with dignity. Recent events have set some new restrictions to your lifestyle. Circumstances favor you only if you know your place among other stars. If you want to have an effect on others, you need to be patient and allow the dream to come true. Those who loves you will understand your reluctance to change the rules too quickly. The problems you have now will turn into stepping stones for success in the future. Those you pushed you away will not be included in your plans.

MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Packing Tips for Complicated Business Trips Packing for business trips can be tricky, especially if your trip is long and involves several destinations. To make the process easier, follow these steps before you embark: Make a packing list a couple of weeks prior to departure. Pack your chargers and toiletries first to make sure they’ll fit. Build several outfits around one pair of shoes to economize space. Select versatile outerwear and wear it on the plane. Choose clothes that can be mixed and matched, such as black or grey items, with a few bright complementary accessories. Avoid packing clothes that wrinkle easily. Squeeze in anything else you may need, like an umbrella. Weigh your bag so you can adjust if it exceeds the airline’s limit. After the trip, note which items you didn’t use so you can plan accordingly next time. Adapted from “A Stepby-Step Guide to Packing for a Complicated Work Trip,” by Sarah Green Carmichael WWW.HBR.ORG

T
he average recipient of Social Security will receive a slight increase in benefits in 2017, according to projections released Wednesday.
healthlinemag.com
Trustees who oversee the nation’s entitlement programs said in two new reports that they expect Social Security’s cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase to be 0.2% next year, based on “intermediate assumptions.” The small increase — which equals an extra $2 for someone getting a $1,000 monthly check — would come after retirees got no increase in Social Security benefits in 2016 for the third time in four decades. The final COLA figure is typically not determined until the fall. Social Security’s trust fund reserves will run out in 2034, mirroring last year’s projection, according to a report tracking the entitlement program’s health. Afterward, yearly revenues would allow the government to pay about 75% of Social Security benefits that have already been promised, according to the report. The trustees also projected Wednesday that Medicare’s Hospital Insurance trust fund will run out of money in 2028, two years earlier than previously predicted — in part because of low inflation projections. The estimated average monthly premium for Medicare
Photo: Getty Images Part B in 2017 is $149, up from 2016’s rate of $121.80 and 2015’s rate of $104.90. About 70% of Part B enrollees will be able to avoid the portion of the premium increase that exceeds their Social Security benefit increase, according to the healthinsurance report. The U.S. government spent $648 billion on Medicare in 2015, representing 3.6% of the nation’s gross domestic product, according to the report. That is projected to grow to 5.6% by 2040, primarily because of the aging population, and 6% by 2090. U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said the figures “show that we have some time to address the fiscal challenges faced by the vitally important Trust Fund programs.” “But reform will be needed,” he added, “and Congress should not wait until the eleventh hour
to address the fiscal challenges given that they represent the cornerstone of economic security for seniors in our country.”

AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins said in a statement that the Social Security report illustrates the importance of pressing political candidates and elected officials for answers. “Candidates who don’t take a stand on Social Security in this important election year choose to put the program’s strength at risk in the long-term,” Jenkins said. “Though people of all ages rely on it, its importance to older Americans — already under tremendous pressure from wage stagnation and shrinking pensions — is only likely to grow. And we know older Americans will vote this year, most likely in higher percentages than any other group of Americans.” Courtesy: USA TODAY
