OUSTON - On June 1, families and friends gathered at the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) Administration Building to congratulate thirty outstanding senior high school students on becoming recipients of the Indo-American Charity Foundation’s Scholarship Awards. The room was filled with enthusiasm from teachers, administrators, and dignitaries who gathered to recognize the outstanding achievements of these honorees. Dignitaries included Sugar Land City Council Member and Mayoral candidate, Harish Jajoo. Congressman Al Green’s office was represented by Sam Merchant, who presented a Proclamation in honor of the event from the Congressman’s office. Dr. Terry Sheneman of FBISD, who was instrumental in making the event successful, opened the ceremony with introductions of Fort Bend ISD personnel who also contributed to the event. this flagship program for IACF. Nanda Vura, current president of IACF shared how each scholarship recipient was chosen. His comments reflected the passion seen in the eyes of each of the committee members who oversaw the application process for the awards. Both Cherivirala and Vura’s messages made it clear that IACF is not only dedicated, but that the non-profit is also enthusiastic about its mission to provide help to the local community. Scholarships amounting to $30,000 were dispersed among the thirty students. The scholarships were awarded based on grade point average, SAT/ ACT scores, personal essay, recommendation letters, and need. Sushmita Mahankali, graduating from Hightower High School, was bestowed with the David Raj Scholarship. The David Raj Scholarship is the highest award IACF presents each year to a student pursuing a career in medicine. The students were noticeably excited about receiving the scholarships as this represents a step towards them achieving their dreams. The talent varied vastly among the students, who have ambitions of becoming entrepreneurs, veterinarians, doctors, speech therapists and engineers. The future of these bright students now looks brighter, thanks to IACF. For more on IACF visit www.iacfhouston.com/

JUNE 08, 2016 Boston Globe ernie Sanders, the iconoclastic Vermont senator, has won a place in charting the future of the Democratic Party. But he did not win its presidential nomination. The rest of the party should now be gracious enough to accept the former, and firm enough to insist that he accept the latter.
B
Hillary Clinton clinched this week, making history as the first woman to represent a major party at the top of the ticket. As the last votes were being counted in the California primary on Tuesday night, it is clear she will finish with more overall supporters, and, as a result, more delegates to the convention in Philadelphia.
Hillary Clinton makes history the kind of coup that Sanders seems to be counting on. Sanders should read the writing on the wall, and concede the presidential race. Staying in at this point would serve only to mislead his supporters into believing he still has a chance, delaying reconciliation. He would also be making a grave mistake if he tried to provoke a clash at the convention over the party’s rules or platform. As the winner, Clinton needs the freedom to manage the convention in the way that best assists her fall campaign.
Clinton romped to a lopsided victory in the New Jersey primary, won the New Mexico primary, and was leading in early returns from California. She also held small leads in the Montana and South Dakota primaries late Tuesday, according to an Associated Press tally. Sanders won the North Dakota caucuses.
But Sanders, who made economic injustice the centerpiece of his campaign, should have a role to play in Philadelphia. He made a different kind of history than Clinton, running a grassroots campaign that far outperformed expectations and served to nudge Clinton on economic issues. He should get a prime speaking spot at the convention to broadcast his ideas to the widest audience.
Her nomination will be a historic milestone, worthy of celebration in its own right. There are still Americans alive today who were born in a nation where women could not vote.
Sanders, at age 74, will probably never have that opportunity again. If he has to give up on his now-impossible presidential hopes to get that platform, it’s a trade he should take.

The only way Sanders could win the Democratic nomination now would be with an unprecedented rebellion by the party’s unelected superdelegates, party officials who can vote however they choose but generally go along with the primaries’ outcome. Overturning the verdict of the primaries would be tremendously controversial, and the likelihood of it happening appears to be zero.

THE STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI
Gandhi gains in stature as honest lawyer
I
t was late in the evening when the train pulled into Pretoria. Gandhi stayed at a hotel that night and moved into a lodge the next day. There he began to study the Abdulla lawsuit. Even while he was working on it, he found time to call a meeting of the Indians in Pretoria. This he did with the help of Tyeb Haji Khan Muhammad, an influential Indian merchant. Only a handful of Indians attended. It was the first time Gandhi had addressed a meeting. “There is too much division among us,” he said. “Why should we be kept apart by differences in birth, family, caste, and religion? Let us form a league, representing every group, and keep the Government informed of our difficulties and our needs.” The audience listened to him with great interest. It was decided to hold regular meetings of all the Indians in Pretoria. Meanwhile, Gandhi was entrusted with the task of translating into English all the correspondence between Dada, Abdulla & Co. and the rival party. After studying all the facts, he was convinced that his client’s claim was just. He knew, however, that if the case was taken to court it would drag on for a long time, so he called together representatives of both parties.
Gandhi was not just preoccupied with his law practice but also gave time to social issues, especially those relating to the way Indians were treated in South Africa. His first success as a lawyer was not a crushing victory over an opponent, but the triumph of good sense and humanity.
tened to him with great attention. They were astonished at this new idea. This young man was not the kind of lawyer they were familiar with; they appreciated his stand and agreed to his suggestion. An arbitrator was appointed, and he gave his award in favor of Gandhi’s clients. Although they had won, Gandhi persuaded his clients to be lenient with their opponent. They agreed not to demand the money due all at once, but in easy installments spread over a long period. Both parties were happy over the settlement. Gandhi’s first success as a lawyer was not a crushing victory over an opponent, but the triumph of good sense and humanity. In the Orange Free State, Indians had been deprived of all their rights by a law enacted in 1888. They could stay there only if they did menial work. Traders were sent away with

Under a law passed in 1886, Indians who wanted to live in the Transvaal were forced to pay an annual poll-tax of £ 3 per head. There they were not allowed to own land except in certain locations. They had no freedom to move about. If they wanted to go out of their houses after 9 p.m., they had to carry a permit with them. They were not allowed to use certain highways at all. Gandhi felt humiliated at the way Indians were treated there. He thought it was his duty to defend their rights and remove their grievances. He often went out for an evening walk with an English friend, Mr. Coates, and he rarely reached home before 10 p.m. He had obtained a letter from the State Attorney allowing him to be out of doors at any time without police interference. One evening Gandhi was alone, walking at his usual brisk pace, when he was suddenly attacked and knocked down. He was injured. He struggled to his feet to face a police constable. “That will teach you to obey the law,” shouted the policeman. “No Indian has the right to walk past the President’s house. Didn’t you know that?” The policeman kicked him. “Gandhi, are you hurt?” asked a familiar, friendly voice. It was Mr. Coates. He happened to be passing that way when he saw Gandhi being attacked. Mr. Coates warned the policeman. “This man is my friend and a distinguished lawyer,” he said. “If he brings a complaint against you, I shall be his wit-

ness.” Then he turned to his friend and said, “I am very sorry, Gandhi, that you have been so rudely assaulted.” “You need not be sorry,” said Gandhi. “How is the poor man to know? All colored people are the same to him. I have made it a rule not to go to court in respect of any personal grievance.” “Just like you,” said Coates, who was still very angry at the policeman’s behavior. Coates turned again to the policeman and said, “You should tell an Indian politely what the regulations are - not knock him down.” “Never mind,” said Gandhi. “I have already forgiven him.” Now that the Abdulla case had been settled, Gandhi thought there was no need for him to stay on in South Africa. Towards the end of 1893 he went back to Durban to book his passage to India. Abdulla arranged a farewell party in his honor. While going through the newspapers that day, Gandhi
was surprised to read that a bill was pending before the Natal Legislative Assembly which would deprive Indians of their right to elect members to the Assembly. He brought this to the notice of the people gathered there for the party. “What do we understand about such matters?” Abdulla Seth said. “We only understand things that affect our trade.” “This bill, if it passes into law, will make our lot extremely difficult,” Gandhi said gravely. “It is the first nail in our coffin. It strikes at the very root of our self-respect.” The Indians now realized what was at stake; but they were unable to decide what to do. They requested Gandhi to postpone his departure and help them. He agreed to stay on for another month and organize resistance to the new bill. Late that night the Indians held a meeting in Abdulla Seth’s house under the presidency of Seth Haji Muhammad, the most influential Indian merchant there. They resolved to
oppose the Franchise Bill with all their strength. Telegrams were sent to the Speaker of the Assembly and the Premier of Natal requesting them to postpone further discussion on the bill. The Speaker promptly replied that the discussion would be put off for two days. The Natal Indians then drew up a petition to the Legislative Assembly pleading against the bill. This was followed up by another petition to Lord Ripon, the then Secretary of State for the Colonies. This was signed by more than ten thousand Indians. Copies of the petition were circulated in South Africa, England, and India. There was much sympathy for the Natal Indians’ plight, but the campaign had started too late to stop the bill becoming law. However, the campaign did do some good. For the first time, the people of India came to know of the conditions in Natal. An even more important result was the new spirit that now awakened the Indians in South Africa. — To be continued

YOUR IMMIGRATION LAWYER
The People’s Lawyer
Answers to your Immigration Questions by Sharlene Sharmila Richards, Immigration Lawyer:email at srichardslaw@aol.com
www.peopleslawyer.net Richard M. Alderman Interim Dean of the Law Center
Sharlene Sharmila Richards Q: I have H-4 status and my wife is an H-1B visa holder. Can I get employment authorization?
Landlord’s right to enter rental property is based on lease Q. Is it lawful for a landlord to request a walk through every four months as part of a lease for a rental property? I’ve leased several homes and I have never had a landlord even suggest something like this. I feel like my privacy would be violated if I agreed to this. Therefore, I’m contemplating not signing the lease. A. The lease provision you mentioned is unusual in leases. The landlord seems to want you to agree to inspection every four months in the lease to avoid any problems he may encounter by conducting his inspections. If you sign a lease with that provision, the landlord would be able to come into the property and inspect every four months pursuant to your agreement. If you do not sign the lease as written, the landlord may not rent you the property. I should point out that if your lease did not have such a provision, the landlord probably would not have the right to enter every four months, unless there was a situation requiring him to do so. Your argument for preventing the landlord from entering that often to do an inspection would be that the landlord is breaching your covenant of “quiet enjoyment. The bottom line seems to be that this landlord is being very concerned and cautious about the condition of the property. One option is to try to negotiate a longer time period between his in-
spections. Q. I buy lottery tickets every week. If I win the lottery does my spouse have any interest in the money I won? A. Assuming you purchased the ticket with money you earned while you were married, the lottery winnings would be considered community property, jointly owned by you and your spouse. The only exception would be if you have a premarital agreement saying otherwise. Q. I applied for an apartment and was turned down because of a ten-year old DUI that happening when I was in college. I have had no problems since then. Is this legal? How long can the DUI count against me? A. The DUI will continue to show up if someone conducts a background check. It does not disappear after some period of time. Assuming you have not had similar problems since the conviction, most people will not pay much attention to an isolated ten year-old DUI. There is no law, however, preventing a person from choosing not to deal with you because of an old DUI. All I can suggest is that you speak with the landlord and fully explain your situation. Q. Is an oral lease valid? I want to move early but my landlord says we agreed to a one-year lease. Doesn’t this have to be in writing? A. An oral lease for a year or less is just as enforceable as a written lease. Of course, the
person who is trying to enforce the lease must prove the oral agreement. Maybe you can get the landlord to agree to terminate the lease early by forfeiting the security deposit or paying a month’s rent. Q. My father recently passed away. In his will he left me his home. He has owned the home for more than thirty years, and owned it for almost twenty years before he married for the second time. Now his wife, my stepmom, says she has the right to live in the house and I cannot sell it. Is she right? A. Your stepmother is correct. As you seem to understand, the house was your father’s separate property and he has the right to will that property to whomever he wants. His wife has no ownership interest in the house. Because your father left the house to you in his will, you own the property. Your right to use or sell the property, however, is subject to your stepmother’s “homestead right to stay in the house as long as she lives. The only way you will be able to sell the property is to get your stepmom to agree to move. Perhaps you can “buy out her interest. Do you want to know more about your legal rights? Check out my website, www.peopleslawyer. net
A: Dependent spouses of H-1B holders are eligible to apply for employment authorization if either their H-1B holder spouse is the principal beneficiary of an approved I-140 Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker or the H-1B holder spouse has been granted extension of stay in H-1B status beyond the 6 year limit (under AC21) because the H-1B holder is in the process of securing permanent residence. Q: For employment authorization for H-4 dependent spouse what is the application called and what is the filing fee for the application Can I pay by personal check and to whom do I make the fee payable to? A: The application is called Form I-756 Application for Employment Authorization. You may download the Form and instructions from the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov. The Filing Fee is $380.00. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services does accept personal checks and the filing fees are made payable to Department of Homeland Security. Q: My spouse is an H-1B nonimmigrant. His I-140 petition was approved but recently revoked. Am I still eligible for the H-4 employment authorization? A: Revocation of the I-140 petition means that your spouse is no longer the principal beneficiary of an approved I-140 petition. Accordingly, you, the dependent H-4 spouse will be ineligible to apply for employment authorization under this rule. Q: How long does this application take to approve?

A: Processing times depend if other applications are submitted along with the employment authorization application. For example, if you are presently in H-4 status and there is no need for you or your H-1B spouse to extend status, then you can file the standalone I-765 application for employment
ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION FOR CERTAIN H-4 DEPENDENT SPOUSES authorization. That application is currently adjudicated and approved within 90 days from the date of filing. If you are filing for an extension of your present H-4 status or change of status to H-4 together with your employment authorization, then you will need to file the employment authorization application with your form I-539 Application to Extend/Change Status and the I-129 for your spouse. In this case, USCIS will not process your Form I-765 until after it has adjudicated your Form I-539 and approved it. Only after having determined your eligibility under the Form I-539, the 90 day period for adjudicating the Form I-765 will start. Similarly, if in addition to your I-539 and I-765, the I-129 Petition For a Nonimmigrant Worker for your H-1B spouse is also filed then both the I-129 and the I-539 must be approved first before your Form I-765 can be adjudicated. Q; Can I e-file my application for the H-4 dependent spouse EAD? A: No, e-filing is not permitted for this category. You will need to submit the paper application and enclose all the necessary supporting documentation. Q: Do I have to be in the US to apply for the H-4 status Employment Authorization? A: Yes, you must be in the US and be in H-4 status to be eligible to apply under this category. Q: How do I show that my husband’s H-1B status is beyond the 6 years limit for H-1B? A: If your husband’s permanent residence process does not require a Permanent Labor Certification (PERM), then evidence that his I-140 petition was filed at least 365 days before the expiration of the 6 year limitation on H-1B stay and that it is still pending is all that is needed. If his extension beyond the 6 year limit was obtained because of the filing of a Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) application, then you may show that his Labor Certification was filed at least 365 days before the expiration of the 6 year limit on his H-1B stay. If the Labor Certification

Remarks by Ambassador Arun K. Singh during the Signing Ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Government of India and Government of the United States to enhance co-operation on Wildlife Conservation and Combating Wildlife Trafficking WASHINGTON, DC June 2, 2016 Under Secretary Novelli, Ladies and gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to be here today to expand IndiaU.S. cooperation to yet another important dimension --- of wildlife conservation and combating wildlife trafficking. With our strategic partnership, dialogue mechanisms and specific areas of engagement, our cooperation now touches virtually everything in the realm of human endeavour. Today, we can take genuine pride in claiming that these endeavours no longer only benefit the human race, but also those that complement us in the living universe. Both our countries and our societies have traditionally prized wildlife. India was one of the earliest countries to adopt legislation to make wildlife conservation a national priority, much before environmentalism became a global buzzword. India and the U.S. are both active parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) for transboundary conservation efforts for migratory species and International Whaling Commission (IWC). Both India and the United States of America are endowed with rich biodiversity and natural heritage. India has 7 World Natural Heritage sites. Both our countries have established a network of Protected Areas. The U.S. National Parks have been a role model through the world, including for us in India. Our first National Park was established way back in 1936, and India now has 166 such parks and sanctuaries. In 2014, UNESCO established the world’s first Category 2 Centre dealing with natural heritage in Dehradun to strengthen implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Asia and the Pacific Region. All of these reflect our strength and record in wildlife conservation. However, with growing demographic and economic pressure, loss of habitat for our wildlife is a challenge that we acutely face. Also, in this day and age, nothing done in isolation can be successful --- particularly when national boundaries are often crossed, be it due to effect of international trade in wildlife product or migration of wild species. Between India and the U.S., there is a lot to learn from each other on management and conservation best practices, capacity-building, awareness campaign and law enforcement Continued on Page 9

He is survived by his wife Bhumika Patel, son Divya Patel, mother Nirmala Patel and brother Nayan. He passed away at the tender age of 43 years from cardiac arrest. There were no warning signs to indicate there were any kind of heart issues or otherwise. He was rushed to the hospital where is wife Bhumika actually works. The Doctors tried to put in a stent but his blood vessel ruptured and they were not able to save him. He was always cheerful and a kind hearted soul. He was active with the BAPS temple in Austin, Texas where he volunteered his time. He had a Masters Degree in Public Administration and was working for the State of Texas in the Business Licensing Division. He was a very caring person and tried to help others as much
as possible. This was evident from the fact that he was a total body donor. We found out that he had decided to donate his organs and full body to science research. Neither his wife Bhumika nor anyone in the family knew that he had pre-planned to donate his body upon his death. They harvested his organs, extremities and skin. This act alone probably saved over 6 to 7 lives. His untimely demise is a shock to the whole family, friends and the community. We can take solace in the fact that he is now resting in God’s hands in Akshardham. We are so proud that even though he has passed away, he has give life to others. he Asia Society Texas Center was the venue for The Indian Film Festival of Houston’s special screening of “Waiting,” writer/ director Anu Menon’s second feature film. IFFH, as the cultural organization is called, began in 2009 and was voted the Best Film Festival in Houston2014 by readers of The Houston Press. This year, IFFH and the Asia Society TC began a collaboration that will be mutually beneficial. Guests attending a cocktail reception with Indian hors d’oeuvres at the iconic building designed by Yoshio Tanaguchi were treated to the sounds of Moodafaruka’s multicultural music before going into the Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater. One of the goals of IFFH is to bring quality films with universal themes promoting the Indian perspective to diverse audiences. “Waiting” certainly reached that goal. Attending the screening not previously shown elsewhere were dignitaries including consuls general, city officials, and cinemaphiles from many ethnic communites. The film is about two strangers from different generations who meet in a hospital while their spouses are in a coma. It reveals how each deals with grief while helping the other person get through the trauma. Although some of the scenes are emotional, bring tears to those in the audience, Menon balances the story with unexpected flashes of humor. The writing, acting, and score are outstanding and are worthy of awards for which they will no doubt be nominated. This is the first time that IFFH has had a “mid-year” screening. The full festival will be held October 28th and 29th at the Asia Society Texas Center, so mark your calendars for a unique experience.
Remarks by Ambassador Arun K. Singh Continued from page 6 that contribute to improved environmental health in both our countries. Similarly, there is a desire to cooperate with each other to deny space to poaching and illegal trade in wildlife products. The MOU to be signed today will provide an institutional basis for such cooperation. I am happy that this MOU is being signed on the eve of our Prime Minister’s Official Working Visit to the U.S. next week. Our Prime Minister is a champion of the cause of environment, clean energy and sustainable development, as you would have seen in our very crucial role in ensuring success of the Paris Convention of the UNFCCC last year or in the ambitious renewable energy goals that India has committed to. Naturally, wildlife conservation is a vital part of our overall agenda. It was during Prime Minister’s first visit to the U.S. in September 2014 that leaders of the two countries stressed the importance of conserving the world’s precious biodiversity and agreed to explore opportunities for collaboration on national parks and wildlife conservation. With this MOU, we are embarking on those very activities which are high on the priority of the two governments and for millions of our citizens. I look forward to a full and vigorous implementation of the MOU by our two sides. Thank you.

Clinton, Trump kick off their White House war by Ivan Couronne
W
ASHINGTON, | AFP | 6/8/2016 - Hillary Clinton savored history Wednesday as the first woman to claim the US presidential nomination for a major party, taking stock before a bruising war for the White House against Donald Trump. Eight years after she was defeated by Barack Obama, Clinton declared a historic milestone for women on the biggest night of her more than threedecade political career, determined to shatter the ultimate glass ceiling and become America’s first female commander-in-chief. The former secretary of state, euphorically seized the Democratic Party mantle Tuesday flinging her arms wide and beaming at a victory celebration in New York with primary wins in four of six states including the grand prize, California. “I was overwhelmed,” she told The Washington Post in an interview. “I was worried that... the emotion of the moment would be so intense that I might have trouble getting through the speech itself. So I did have to collect myself and try to get prepared.” She is a pioneering if polarizing stateswoman whose unfavorability ratings are second only to Trump -- the brash billionaire and political neophyte who rewrote the campaign playbook to clinch the Republican ticket with mudslinging unparalleled in modern US politics. The ferocity of the primaries -- few have seen a US presidential race characterized by such denigrating attacks -- promises to be just a preview of what is in store for the general election. On Wednesday she made a fresh appeal to supporters of her self-declared Democratic socialist rival Bernie Sanders, saying that they shared the same goals and must unite against Trump. - Courting Sanders -” We talk about what’s at stake,” she told CNN from her home in Chappaqua, New York. “I believe a lot of Senator Sanders’
supporters will join us in making sure Donald Trump doesn’t get anywhere near the White House.” For now, Sanders has refused to capitulate, vowing to “continue the fight” to the final Democratic primary in the capital Washington next week, and then on to the Democratic convention in July. But the Vermont senator meets Thursday with Barack Obama -- perhaps a sign that the US president will play a role in uniting a deeply divided Democratic party to battle the 69-yearold real estate mogul. Trump laid into Clinton after chalking up yet more primary wins himself, accusing her and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, of “selling access, selling favors, selling government contracts.” He signaled there would be no honeymoon, announcing a “major speech” for early next week in which he will address “all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons.” Clinton batted aside suggestions Wednesday that her family’s foundation had not been transparent in accepting donations from foreign governments. “We had absolutely overwhelming disclosure,” she told CNN, defending a charity that helps the vulnerable at home and across the world.
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos bets on India with $3 bn investment
N
EW DELHI, India | AFP | 6/8/2016 - Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos has pledged to invest $3 billion in India, in a big bet on the growth of online shopping in the fast-growing South Asian economy. Speaking in Washington DC as India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the United States, Bezos told a gathering of business leaders that he saw “huge potential” in India. The investment, announced Tuesday, comes on top of $2 billion Amazon invested in India in 2014, and will boost Modi’s campaign to attract foreign cash to create much-needed jobs. “We have already created some 45,000 jobs in India and continue to see huge potential in the Indian economy,” Bezos said at the USIndia Business Council meeting, according to a statement from the group.
Modi made the remarks in an address to a joint session of the US Congress during a visit to Washington designed to build on improved ties between the world’s two largest democracies. Once effectively banned from the United States because of his alleged role in anti-Muslim riots before coming to national office, Modi has built a rapport with US President Barack Obama.

Muslims mark start of Ramadan, many under cloud of war
B
EIRUT, Lebanon | AFP | 6/6/2016 - More than a billion Muslims observed the start of Ramadan on Monday but in the besieged cities of Syria and Iraq residents struggled to mark the holy month.
rituals, including visits to relatives’ tombs and swims in springs infused with flowers. The hardline Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) group meanwhile threatened to raid Indonesian nightspots that flout restrictions during Ramadan.
Islamic authorities announced the start of the fasting month with the sighting of the crescent moon in countries such as Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
“Please respect the holiness of Ramadan,” Ja’far Shodiq, the group’s deputy chairman, told AFP. “The FPI is not against fun -- but sometimes fun can verge on immoral.”
Marking the divine revelation received by Prophet Mohammed, the month sees Muslim faithful abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn to dusk.
In China, the start of Ramadan was marked with the customary ban on civil servants, students and children in the mainly Muslim Xinjiang region taking part in the daytime fast.
They break the fast with a meal known as iftar and before dawn have a second opportunity to eat and drink during suhur. The month is followed by the Eid al-Fitr festival.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and a month during which the faithful must devote themselves to piety and charity as well as compassion and generosity.
But for many in Syria who have been accustomed to hardship after five years of war, this year’s Ramadan was expected to be especially difficult, particularly in besieged cities and towns. In Madaya, where some 40,000 people have been living under government siege for months, resident Mumina, 32, and her husband planned to break the fast using UN food handouts. The package contain pulses and tuna cans but “there’s no pasta, no meat, no dairy. We tried to plant some vegetables but the land isn’t good for planting now,” she said. “There’s barely any food in the markets and whatever we find is so expensive that we can’t buy it,” she said, planning a simple meal of beans for Monday night. Shadi Matar, an activist from Daraya, also complained that residents would only feed on greens for iftar. “We definitely have a lot of choices,” he said trying to put a brave face

around Fallujah as they press a major advance to retake the city from the Islamic State jihadist group.
In conflict-hit Libya, residents spoke of a somber mood and complained of the high cost of food.
An estimated 50,000 people are believed trapped inside, some being used as human shields by IS, and the families left behind are often those who could not afford to leave.
“There are power cuts and cash shortages,” said bank employee Karima Mounir.
“You have to get up at 5:00 in the morning and stand in line forever to pay 5,000 dinars ($4.50) for a kilo of tomatoes,” said Dulaimi, contacted by AFP inside Fallujah. “I can’t even go there myself, I have to send someone, because you need to have a long beard and a short dishdasha,” he said, describing the attire of jihadists.
Iraqi forces have tightened a siege
In some parts of the world, Muslims were prepared to mark Ramadan with extravagance, including in the wealthy Gulf monarchies. Dubai’s sail-shaped landmark Burj al-Arab hotel said it would offer “an array of delectable traditional delicacies” at iftar for 400 Emirati dirhams ($110) per person. - ‘Bridges between communities’ -In Indonesia, faithful spent the days leading up to Ramadan taking part in
London’s newly-elected Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan underlined this in an article published on the Guardian’s website saying Ramadan “provides an opportunity to break bread and build bridges between communities”. US President Barack Obama also celebrated the start of Ramadan in a message paying tribute to Muslims in America and around the world. But he also took a swipe at presidential candidate Donald Trump without naming him, saying: “We will continue to welcome immigrants and refugees into our nation, including those who are Muslim.” Trump has drawn controversy by calling for Muslims to be barred from entering the United States following a deadly shooting attack in San Bernardino, California in December. Shiites in Iraq, Iran, Lebanon and elsewhere will begin observing Ramadan on Tuesday.

INNEAPOLIS, Press Trust of India | June 07, 2016 - “Islam means peace”, Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi said as he decried the backlash against Muslims and made a strong call to nations to welcome refugees, particularly children, and not generalise them based on the actions of a few who have “tarnished” the image of Islam. “Islam means peace. There are hundreds of (references) in the Holy Quran where peace, justice, freedom and equality are taught,” Mr Satyarthi said at the opening of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize Forum held under the auspices of the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Minneapolis on Monday. Mr Satyarthi, who shared the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize with Pakistani girls’ rights activist Malala Yousafzai, was asked by a young boy from Cyprus
during a live global Q&A about the backlash against Muslims and rhetoric used against them by some politicians as well as the subsequent resentment against refugees amid fears that terrorists could hide among the millions fleeing conflict in countries like Syria and Iraq and seeking asylum in the western world.
and even creating deep fundamentalism, brainwashing young people. We all know how ISIS and all these terror groups are functioning under the garb and name of Islam,” he said.
Mr Satyarthi, 62, accompanied at the forum by his wife Sumedha, said it was unfortunate that a “handful of people” were “manipulating” Islam and bringing a “bad name” to the religion for their selfish “political” ends and sometimes “emotional” reasons when Muslims across the world have been ambassadors of humanity and peace and people from Muslim countries have shown courage to speak out the truth.
With children being the worst sufferers in the unprecedented refugee crisis engulfing the world, the Nobel laureate stressed that “no child wants to be a refugee” and no child has ever been responsible for war, insurgency or conflict.
“A handful of people are manipulating the religion...
“We oppose that kind of tendency and practice that is manipulating Islam,” he added.
“But children are the worst victims. They are forced to be refugees. We should not victimise them further,” he said making a strong call to nations and its citizens to welcome refugees and not generalise them based on the actions of a few
When asked by a 15-year old girl in the audience what he would do if he were the Prime Minister of India, Mr Satyarthi said with a laugh that he “never thought about it” and would not take oath as Prime Minister “because I strongly feel that the power of ordinary people and the moral power of an ordinary person is million times more than any prime minister or any politician in the world.” Mr Satyarthi said while progress has been made across the world to improve the condition of children and ensure basic rights to them, the work will not be complete if even a single child is forced into slavery, labour and prostitution. “Children in Nigeria, India, Pakistan are rising up and de-
manding good quality education. They are saying they do not want to marry at an early age, do not want tools in their hands,” he said. “Young people like Malala are rising up everywhere and choosing peace over violence, tolerance over extremism and courage over fear,” he said. “Despite of all the good work all of us have done, 168 million children are still calling not for our attention but our action. They are not just numbers,” he stressed. “The world cannot be civilised, cultured if even a single child is enslaved. If one single girl is forced to work as child prostitute, then we cannot call ourselves religious, cultured and developed world,” he said. Mr Satyarthi kicked off the three-day 2016 Nobel Peace Prize Forum by engaging in the live-streamed global conversation moderated by Norwegian Nobel Institute’s Research Director Asle Toje with Forum delegates and youth from United Nations Children’s Fund offices around the world, including Rajasthan, Tunisia
and Ghana. On questions from young girls in Ghana about the need to bridge the gap between the developed and developing world, Mr Satyarthi said the world has a “very strong”” development agenda for the future in the form of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and leaders will have to show strong political will to achieve them. “The SDGs require genuine political will, strong social will and basic honesty among global leaders to fulfill and respect the promises they have made and to ensure that the SDG agenda is properly implemented,” he said. Having worked tirelessly his life to save children from slavery, bonded labour and trafficking, Mr Satyarthi lamented that slavery still exists in the world and said failure of the judicial system and political will is to blame for this. “The worst thing happening today can be explained in three words - Slavery still exists. t had everything you’d find at a film premiere: the red carpet, the stars, the photographers and the celebrity interviews. But Nollywood film “The CEO” had something else -- an Airbus A340-300. The film, directed by Kunle Afolayan, got its first airing on Air France flight 149 from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to Paris Charles De Gaulle overnight Wednesday-Thursday. It will also take top billing at the Nollywood Week film festival, which starts on Thursday in the French capital and runs until Sunday showcasing the giant Nigerian cinema industry known as Nollywood. Afolayan, who pulled up to the red carpet at departures in Lagos at the wheel of a saloon car, claimed the unusual premiere on the scheduled commercial flight as a first for world cinema. “What is happening tonight, that has never happened before anywhere in the world. It’s going to be a premiere of a film in a plane,” he told AFP before take-off. “We decided to come up with this initiative to show the world that Africans are innovative, Nigerians are special people.” DJs played in the departures hall, cocktails and champagne flowed, while actors danced with ground staff. On board after the showing, the cast met passengers and posed for photographs in the aisles. - Soaring ambition -With a budget of more than $1 million (nearly 900,000 euros) and corporate sponsorship, “The CEO” is a far cry from the shoestring productions that characterise the bulk of Nollywood’s output. The plot also moves away from typical themes addressing gritty social and cultural issues and revolves around the search across Africa for a new boss of a telecoms firm. The financial backing of the airline allowed the film-makers to shoot on location in Kenya, South Africa and also in France while the cast reflects its appeal to all Africans. national face, alongside actors from Kenya and Ivory Coast to Morocco and Haiti. It’s hoped better financing will help Nollywood move on from the wobbly cameras, poor sound and editing that characterise many films -- and develop its craft. “For me to be part of a new territory, exploring new territories and seeing how other people do it, it’s really been interesting meeting new filmmakers,” said South African actor Nico Panagio. “And the Nigerian crew, Nigerian filmmakers, are so passionate about what they do it’s contagious. You enjoy working with them because every person on set loves their job.” - ‘Logical’ step -Nollywood is the world’s second-biggest movie industry in terms of production, churning out on average 1,000 films a year. Only the Indian film industry, including Hindi-language Bollywood, makes more, according to the nollywoodweek.com website promoting the Paris film festival. Nollywood’s turnaround time can be extremely short -- about seven to 10 days -- and budgets as low as just $8,000 compared to Hollywood’s average of $67
million, it added. Most films go straight to DVD and are hawked by the roadside from wheelbarrows, market stalls or at traffic lights for home viewing because of a dearth of cinemas across the country. Piracy has hurt revenue but increasingly tie-ups are being sought with online distributors to capitalise on Nollywood’s popularity across Africa and increasing Internet access. On board, Air France-KLM commercial director in Nigeria Arthur Dieffenthaler said it was an unusual collaboration between two completely different industries. “We’re at 35,000 feet (10,668 metres). I guess we’re somewhere between the Sahara and the Mediterranean... at two o’clock in the morning and people are celebrating the premiere of a movie,” he said. But the company’s Nigeria director Jean-Raoul Tauzin sees it as a logical partnership given its interests in Africa and Nollywood’s appeal. “Nigeria is an important country for Air France, so it was of interest to us to support Kunle Afolayan and his team in their cinematic endeavours,” he said before take-off.

Scientists unveil plan to create Lung cancer: Mobile app synthetic human genomes could extend life expectancy by Jean-Louis SANTINI
C
HICAGO, AFP | 6/6/2016 - A new mobile application could help doctors better provide care to patients with advanced lung cancer, perhaps even extending life expectancy, according to a study presented in the United States Monday. The app, named Moovcare, enables patient-doctor communication even at a distance, using remote monitoring to quickly detect relapses or complications.

ASHINGTON, AFP | Friday 6/3/2016 - A group of American-led scientists and entrepreneurs has announced the start of a 10-year project aimed at creating synthetic human genomes in a move that could revolutionize the field of biotechnology but raises troubling ethical concerns. The ambitious proposal could make it possible to grow human organs for transplant and speed up the development of vaccines, the project backers said in a paper published Thursday in the journal Science. But the idea has already sparked criticism due to the potential of one day creating children with no biological parents, and due to the secrecy surrounding a recent closed-door meeting on the subject. Its proponents envision a project on the same scale as the Human Genome Project, which mapped and published the full, sequenced human genome in 2003 -- or the 99.9 percent that we all have in common. Dubbed “Human Genome Project-write” or “HGP-write” -- since synthesizing would amount to “writing” rather than “reading” our genetic code -the project aims to reduce the cost of engineering DNA segments in the lab. The new goal would be “more ambitious and more focused on understanding the practical applications than the original Human Genome Project,” said George Church, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School, and one of the 25 authors of the paper. - $100 million -The project’s backers said they hoped to launch it this year after raising $100 million around the world from public, private, philanthropic and academic sources. They did not provide an estimate for total costs, saying only that it would likely be less than the $3 billion for the Human Genome Project. The genome is the genetic blueprint of every organism -the complete set of DNA containing the instructions it needs to survive and thrive. Sequencing the human genome requires decoding the exact order of about three billion base pairs of DNA packed into 30,000 genes. “Genome synthesis is a logical extension of the genetic engineering tools that have been used safely within the biotech industry for ~40 years and have provided important societal benefits,” the paper’s authors said. Potential applications, they said, include “growing transplantable human organs and engineering immunity to viruses in cell lines via genomewide recoding.” Other potential benefits include “engineering cancer resistance into new therapeutic cell lines and accelerating highproductivity, cost-efficient vaccine and pharmaceutical development using human cells and organoids,” they added. - Public debate -In response to ethical concerns, the project’s promoters said they envisioned a broad public discourse with “conversations well in advance of project implementation.” Thursday’s publication followed an invitation-only meeting of 130 scientists, poli-
cymakers and entrepreneurs at Harvard University three weeks ago that was shrouded in secrecy. The New York Times cited organizers as saying that they wanted to avoid publicity so as to not jeopardize publication of the project in a peer reviewed scientific journal. Critics of the idea include Drew Endy, a bioengineer at Stanford University, and Laurie Zoloth, a professor of religion at Northwestern University. “Taking a step back, just because something becomes possible, how should we approach determining if it is ethical to pursue?” they wrote in a recent op-end article for Cosmos magazine. “Discussions to synthesize, for the first time, a human genome should not occur in
closed rooms.” Commenting on the project, synthetic biology professor John Ward of University College London said: “The project is not as controversial as some observers might be saying. “First we already replace segments of human genes in cells growing in culture dishes. This is well regulated and is the very core of the new advances in medical genetics. Making large and larger pieces of human chromosomes and putting them into host cells in culture dishes will enable more deeper understanding of what all the genes and the non-coding DNA actually does,” he said via the Science Media Center. “There is no call to make an entire human being just as there is no push for doing that with current studies using human embryos.”
“This approach introduces a new era of follow-up in which patients can give and receive continuous feedback between visits,” said lead author Dr. Fabrice Denis, a cancer researcher in Le Mans, France. Study participants who used the app reported an improved quality of life and on average survived 19 months, seven months longer than the control group that received standard medical care. “With new technologies like this app, we can make communication even simpler, which is great for doctors and even better for patients,” said Gregory Masters, a lung cancer expert who did not work on the study. - Better adapted treatment -Developed by Denis, a lung cancer specialist, the app is still at prototype stage, but the Israeli firm Sivan Innovation plans to roll it out commercially in 2017 at a price yet to be determined.
The app, named Moovcare, enables patient-doctor communication even at a distance. AFP Photo. Sivan Innovation and the Cancer Institute of Western France co-funded the study whose results were presented the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference. Researchers randomly selected 133 patients to test the app or receive standard medical care following chemotherapy, radiation treatment or surgery. Patients who used the app had the same medical visiting schedule -- doctor visits and CT scans every three to six months -- but used the app to assess their own symptoms weekly. If the app detected specific changes in any of a dozen symptoms, doctors received alerts to adapt treatment accordingly. One year after the study began, 75 percent of patients using the app were still alive, in
contrast to 49 percent in the control group. Relapse rates in both groups hovered around 50 percent, but 74 percent of those using the app were strong enough to continue treatment following relapse. Just one-third in the control group were considered healthy enough for more procedures. Doctors did note that while corresponding with patients via the app did not significantly add time to their work weeks, the app could burden medical facilities with additional costs, if nurses or other staff must also help monitor patients who were using it. An estimated 224,000 people will receive a lung cancer diagnosis in the United States alone this year. It is the most common cancer worldwide, with 1.8 million new diagnoses and 1.59 million deaths in 2012, according to statistics cited by ASCO.

UGAR LAND—(June 7, 2016) —Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land offers annual student physicals for Fort Bend ISD, Alief ISD, Stafford MSD and any other student athlete needing a physical. The physicians have been associated with these school districts for more than 16 years. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) requires all high school athletes to undergo and pass a physical examination prior to participating in sports. Physical evaluations include examining height, weight, vision, blood pressure, pulse, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, spine, and all joints in the upper and lower body. Physicians discuss the athletes’ medical history and consult with them and their parents if further evaluation is necessary prior to releasing them to participate in sports. “I grew up in the area and attended Elsik High School, so it is an honor to come back and support the players. We look forward to continuing to support these school districts,” said Dr. Vincent Phan, orthopedic surgeon and team physician. “We truly enjoy working with the schools in Fort Bend and Alief.” “Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land generously donates proceeds generated from the physical examinations back to the schools’ athletic training programs. In the last five years, this group of physicians has donated more than $300,000 back to local schools. Athletic trainers use this money to purchase equipment and supplies they need for the upcoming school year,” explained Richard Gre-

B-Town slams censorship on ‘Udta Punjab’
by Prakash Mathema
K
ATHMANDU, Nepal - Set against the backdrop of Nepal’s deadly Maoist insurgency, “Kalo Pothi” (The Black Hen) opened to packed theatres in Kathmandu at the weekend, signalling a growing fondness for gritty domestic cinema over Bollywood extravaganzas. For decades, Nepali filmmakers churned out copies of India’s famously glamorous movies, blending chaste love songs with action sequences in a bid to grab eyeballs. But after years of losing ground to Hindi films, Nepali cinema is casting off the songand-dance format with storylines that seek to capture the reality of life in the Himalayan nation. “Kalo Pothi” follows two boys living in a remote, impoverished hamlet and is based on debut filmmaker Min Bahadur Bam’s own experiences growing up during the country’s decade-long civil war. “We often underestimate the Nepali audience, but they are very intelligent. As filmmakers, it is about time we respect them and take risks,” said Bam. Bam is the latest young Nepali director to win awards overseas -- including at the Venice Film Festival -- and find

Dwarfed by Bollywood budgets, local films rarely struck gold until 2012, when a fastpaced flick about a bank robbery in Kathmandu captivated viewers with its streetwise dialogue and realism. Made on a shoestring budget, “Loot” became a cult film and spawned a sequel, scheduled for release this year. Its

Recent releases include “Highway”, which follows passengers stranded on an ill-fated bus trying to get past illegal road blockades, and “Talakjung vs Tulke”, about the ten-year insurgency, which became Nepal’s entry to the 2016 Oscars.

D
UBAI (AFP) - Domes inspired by the royal palaces of India rise from a new Bollywood theme park under construction in Dubai, part of a drive to lure millions more tourists to the emirate.
But Indian visitors surged by 26 percent to 1.6 million, becoming for the first time the largest single nationality, while Britons rose 11 percent to 1.2 million. “We do not want to focus on six or seven markets. We want to focus on 20 markets,” Kazim told AFP.
It already boasts opulent shopping malls and numerous luxury resorts, but the Gulf city-state has even grander ambitions and the film industry is centre stage.
- More theme parks in pipeline - Bollywood Parks will target visitors passing through Dubai and aims to “keep them a little bit longer”, said Jellum.
Bollywood Parks is part of Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR) which is being developed as the region’s “largest integrated theme park resort”. Spread over 25 million square feet (2.3 million square metres), it will feature three theme parks and a water park. The resort is located near the region’s busiest port and close to where Dubai is expanding its second airport to make it the world’s largest. The Bollywood theme park, a first of its kind inspired by the Indian popular movie industry, aims with its centrepiece Rajmahal Theatre, cinemas, rides and simulators to increase Dubai’s appeal to tourists from South Asia. “We are trying to target a wide geographic area, but of course the majority will be from India and countries in close proximity

It has built a modern infrastructure unmatched by its regional peers.
Around 14,000 construction workers are toiling round the clock to keep DPR on track for its October opening.
And as turmoil hits traditional tourism destinations in the Middle East and North Africa, Dubai has capitalised on its reputation as a safe haven for tourism and business.
More than 14.2 million people visited Dubai in 2015, but the target is 20 million by 2020 when the Gulf emirate hosts the global trade fair Expo 2020. Dubai has invested billions of dollars over more than a decade to put itself on the map as a regional business and tourism hub.
Tourism authorities have said hotel capacity was to reach 100,000 rooms in May, boasting that Dubai aims to “position itself as a top 10 global destination in terms of available hotel supply”. Hotel occupancy stood at
85 percent in the first quarter of 2016, with average nightly revenue of $142 per available room. To increase tourist numbers, Dubai is looking for visitors far from beyond its Gulf neighbourhood. “The benefits would be limited if we rely on markets that we are used to. We need to expand our marketing to new places,” said Dubai Tourism chief Issam Kazim. Visitors from Gulf countries represented the largest regional group last year at 3.3 million,
Other theme parks are also being developed to increase the number of visitors. Next door, Motiongate Dubai teams up three major Hollywood studios -- Dreamworks, Sony Pictures and Lionsgate. It features rides that take visitors across simulated settings like the Smurfs Village, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, among 27 attractions based on 13 popular movies. “Our target is everybody,” said Motiongate Dubai general manager Guido Zucchi, including visitors from Gulf countries and elsewhere. The theme parks are only the latest additions to a long list of entertainment venues in Dubai, including an indoor ski slope.
The strong reactions from the film industry came after the Censor Board purportedly raised certain objections regarding references to Punjab. It has been said the Shahid Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer might have to undergo some changes due to the board’s disapproval. Sudhir Mishra, who has had his share of run-ins with the board , tweeted, “No film shud be censored. Only be certified. Lot of blood, sweat has gone into the making. But the answer is to make brave films.” Bhatt, whose daughter Alia is playing one of the leads in the film, said censorship is similar to ignorance. “Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance”. Is Pahalaj Nihalani listening? The Censors says I am the one who says the last sentence on UDTA PUNJAB .The nation can say what it wants our verdict is going to stick. Why should I censor myself to nourish ignorance.” National award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who faced an opposition from the board before the release of his last film “Aligarh”, said the row surrounding “Udta Punjab” has made him angry. “What is this I’m hearing about #UdtaPunjab? Makes me very, very angry. Can the truth defame a state? #UdtaPunjabCensored Delusion or collusion? Why is the establishment so scared of films that mirror reality? #UdtaPunjabCensored,” tweeted an agitated Hansal. Actor Ranvir Shorey requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene into the matter. “Dear @PMOIndia, please put an end to this constant BLACKMAILING of the film fraternity by the CBFC.

Scientists trick body’s viral response to combat cancer Paris, France | AFP | Wednesday 6/1/2016 - 17:00 GMT | 443 words German researchers on Wednesday presented a Trojan horse method of attacking cancer, sneaking virus impersonators into the human body to unleash an anti-tumour immune offensive.
three people with advanced skin cancer were given low doses of the treatment, in the first step of the long and cautious process to test new drugs on humans. All developed a “strong” immune response, the team reported in the journal Nature.
Tested in only three people so far, the treatment claims to be the latest advance in immunotherapy, which aims to rouse the body’s own immune army against disease.
If further trials find the therapy works, they added, the method could help pave the way to the highly-sought “universal” treatment against all cancer types.
Made in the lab, this Trojan horse is composed of nanoparticles containing cancer RNA -- a form of genetic coding -- enclosed by a fatty acid membrane.
The new treatment is called an RNA vaccine -- it works just like a preventive vaccine by mimicking an infectious agent and training the body to respond to it.
The particles are injected into patients to simulate a virus invasion, and infiltrate specialised immune cells. These so-called dendritic cells decode the RNA imbedded in the nanoparticles -- triggering, in turn, the production of cancer antigens. The antigens then activate cancerfighting T cells, and thus prime the body for an all-out, anti-tumour assault. Following experiments in mice,
“Impressively, immune responses were observed” in the three cancer patients, expert commentators Jolanda de Vries and Carl Figdor of the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen in the Netherlands wrote in an analysis, also published by Nature. But they cautioned “it is still early days, and a larger, randomised trial will be needed to validate these findings.” Immunotherapy is already used in treating some forms of cancer, but
Unlike viruses, bacteria or fungi which can be targeted with drugs, cancer cells are not intruders but our own cells gone haywire due to DNA damage. This explains why they mostly circulate undisturbed by the body’s immune system. Finding drugs that can kill diseased cells without harming healthy ones has proven very difficult. Chemotherapy, for example, targets fast-dividing cells -- good and bad alike. Immunotherapy seeks to activate the body’s own immune response without killing healthy cells. “Although the research is very interesting, it is still some way away from being of proven benefit to patients,” immunotherapy professor Alan Melcher of The Institute of Cancer Research in London, told the Science Media Centre. One outstanding issue was “the practical challenge of manufacturing nanoparticles for widespread clinical application.”
Chicago, United States | AFP | Sunday 6/5/2016 - Doubling the duration of hormone therapy for women with early-stage breast cancer from five to 10 years reduces the risk of recurrence and developing tumors in the other breast, a study showed Sunday. The study focused on a type of earlystage breast cancer known as hormone receptor-positive and was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago this weekend. It also appears in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor, which stops estrogen production in postmenopausal women. The data suggests that “longer durations of widely-available therapy reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, and prevent second cancers from arising,” said Harold Burstein, a breast cancer expert and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School not linked to the study. Lead study author Paul Goss, director of breast cancer research at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital,
At five years of follow-up, 95 percent of the women receiving letrozole were free of breast cancer, compared to 91 percent in the control group. AFP
The study involved 1,918 postmenopausal women in Canada and the United States who had received five years of any one of three aromatase inhibitor therapies either as initial treatment or after taking tamoxifen, another anti-estrogen drug dating back to the 1970s. Half of the participants received letrozole after a random selection process, while the other half received a placebo. After a follow-up period of a little more than six years, just seven percent
of participants in the letrozole group saw a recurrence of cancer or a tumor in the other breast, compared to 10.2 percent in the control group. But only 1.4 percent of the women on letrozole developed a cancer in the breast that had been spared, compared to 3.2 percent of those on the placebo. As concerns recurrence of the initial cancer -- most frequently in the bones, liver or other organs -- the difference between the two groups was smaller -5.7 percent in the letrozole group versus 7.1 percent in the control group. At five years of follow-up, 95 percent of the women receiving letrozole were free of breast cancer, compared to 91 percent in the control group. Ninety-four percent of the women taking letrozole had survived at the five-year mark, compared to 93 percent of those taking a placebo. In 2012, more than six million women around the world survived for at least five years after being diagnosed with breast cancer, according to statistics cited by ASCO.

Medicare provides valuable health insurance to most older Americans. But it also comes with a complicated set of rules and sometimes significant out-ofpocket costs. Here’s what you can expect to pay for Medicare in retirement. Premiums. Most retirees pay the standard Medicare Part B premium of $104.90 per month in 2016. However, some Medicare beneficiaries pay more. Retirees who sign up for Medicare in 2016 and Medicare beneficiaries who have not yet claimed Social Security will be charged $121.80 per month for Medicare Part B. Highincome retirees bringing in more than $85,000 ($170,000 for couples) will also pay higher Part B premiums, ranging from $170.50 to $389.80 monthly depending on how high their income is. Most retirees don’t pay a premium for Medicare Part A hospital insurance. The premium cost for Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage varies depending on the plan you select. Most retirees have their Medicare premiums deducted from their Social Security check. Deductible and coinsurance. Medicare Part B has a $166 deductible in 2016. After that, Medicare beneficiaries typically need to pay 20 percent of the cost of most doctor’s services. “That can quickly add up if a lot of health services are needed over time,” says Tanya Feke, a medical doctor and author of “Medicare Essentials: A Physician Insider Explains the Fine Print.” There is no annual limit on how much you might need to pay out of pocket.

Decade of hormone therapy reduces breast cancer recurrence: study
Postmenopausal women who took the drug letrozole for a decade instead of an often prescribed five-year period saw a 34 percent lower risk of recurrence or of a new cancer in the other breast than those who received a placebo, according to researchers.

There are some services Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for that aren’t subject to these cost-sharing requirements, such as a wellness visit once every 12 months and a variety of preventative care services, including flu shots and cardiovascular disease screenings. “Some preventive screening tests like colonoscopies and mammograms are free under Part B, but only if certain conditions are met,” Feke says. However, if a problem is discovered during a preventative visit, it could lead to other medical services that do have an additional cost. Hospital stays. If you are hospitalized, Medicare Part A has a $1,288 deductible. If you end up spending more than 60 days in the hospital it will cost you $322 per day for days 61 through 90 and $644 for up to 60 lifetime reserve days after that. “Everyone with Part A has to pay each time they are admitted to the hospital,” Feke says. “For people who need hospital services frequently, outof-pocket costs could skyrocket.” Once your lifetime reserve days are used up, you will become responsible for your own hospital expenses. Supplemental insurance. Some retirees buy supplemental insurance policies to cover some of the cost-sharing requirements of traditional Medicare as well as some additional services. A Medigap policy can help to make your health care costs in retirement more predictable. Many plans will cover some of Medicare Part B’s out-ofpocket costs and longer hospital stays than traditional Medicare. “The out-of-pocket costs can be great or virtually zero, depending on what type of a supplemental Medigap plan you choose,” says Ronald Kahan, a medical doctor and author of “Medicare Demystified: A Physician Helps Save You
Sudhir Mathuria Contact: Sudhir Mathuria Licensed Professional Health Life 360 6650 Southwest Freeway Houston TX 77074 713-771-2900 www.MyMedicarePlanning.com
Time, Money, and Frustration.” “The most comprehensive plan is Plan F. It’s the most expensive, but it will also cover virtually every copay and deductible that you have.” Another option is to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, which means you will receive your Medicare Parts A and B via a private plan instead of original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans have different cost-sharing requirements for medical services and sometimes more coverage restrictions than traditional Medicare. “If you’re willing to see in-network doctors and only do refererals from your primary care physician, your out-of pocket costs could be smaller,” Kahan says. “You are trading off that low cost for the ability to go to any doctor you want when you want without a referral.” Prescription drug coverage. Seniors can choose among an average of over two dozen plans for their Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, and each offers different prices and coverage. The average premium was $41.46 per month in 2016, and plans are allowed to charge deductibles of up to $360. Premiums are higher for people who go 63 or more days without prescription drug coverage after becoming eligible for Medicare and for high-income Medicare beneficiaries. To get the best value for your money, you will need to continue to compare plans each year in retirement because the prices and covered medications change annually. “I think it’s worth looking at your prescription drug plan every year because sometimes plans change their level of coverage, and there are always new plans coming out,” says Cindy Levering, a retired pension actuary in Baltimore and member of the Society of Actuaries committee on post retirement needs and risks. Avoid late-enrollment penalties. You can first sign up for Medicare during the seven-month initial enrollment period that begins three months before you turn 65. If you don’t sign up for Medicare during this initial enrollment period, you could be charged higher premiums for the rest of your life. Your Part B premiums will increase by 10 percent for each 12-month period you delayed Medicare coverage after becoming eligible for it. If you didn’t sign up for Medicare because you receive group health insurance through your or your spouse’s job, you need to sign up for Medicare within eight months of leaving the job or the coverage ending to avoid the penalty. UGAR LAND, TX Sugar Land recently began construction of a 2.88-acre public plaza next to the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land, a live entertainment venue located near University Boulevard and U.S. Highway 59. Substantial completion of the plaza and the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land is expected by fall 2016, with a formal grand opening event planned by ACE SL, LLC (ACE) in January 2017.
In accordance with a longheld vision of Sugar Land residents – including the support of a 2007 citizen-led Visioning Task Force – and the City Council, the City’s development of this property will promote capital investment; create new jobs; enhance educational opportunities; increase tourism and provide unique destination activities; and anchor an exciting mixedused development envisioned to include retail, office, commercial and entertainment amenities – an environment that will be attractive to major corporations, residents and visitors. into Marsh’s server to access the data, some of which was then posted for sale online.
US investment bank Morgan Stanley will pay $1 million for lax protection of customer data after an employee took records on some 730,000 clients, the Securities and exchange Commission announced Wednesday.
When the case first came to light in early 2015, Morgan Stanley said there was no evidence that customers had incurred any financial losses due to the data theft.
The SEC said the employee, Galen Marsh, downloaded the confidential records between 2011 and 2014 and transferred them to his home computer server. Then, according to the agency, “a likely third party” hacked
The plaza will feature an interactive water fountain, a tree-covered grove, a large lawn area for residents and visitors and a dedicated area for food truck connections. The project is expected to spur additional commercial and retail growth that will further establish Sugar Land as one of the strongest economies in the region, all while building and enhancing the value of the overall development within TIRZ #4.
“Just as the plaza in front of Sugar Land City Hall is a major focal point for all of Town Square,” said City Manager Allen Bogard, “we believe this plaza will become its own unique destination and gathering place for families, visitors and employers.”
Tel: 713-774-5140
The SEC said the bank did not adequately limit staff access to confidential customer account data, and that some of the data taken by the former employee eventually was posted for sale on the Internet by a third party.
Located on City-owned property within Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) #4, the plaza will serve as a focal point for a mixed-use development expected to include office, retail, entertainment, a future hotel/conference center and major corporate employers such as Fluor Corporation and Texas Instruments.
A TIRZ is a special district that encourages a higher quality of development than would otherwise be possible; a portion of the increase in tax revenues generated within the TIRZ helps fund public infrastructure improvements within the district.

Marsh was later convicted for the theft and was sentenced to 36 months of probation and ordered to pay $600,000 in restitution. “Given the dangers and impact of cyber breaches, data security is a critically important aspect of investor protection,” said Andrew Ceresney, director of the SEC Enforcement Division, in a statement. “We expect SEC registrants of all sizes to have policies and procedures that are reasonably designed to protect customer information,” he said.

“One should never attach too much significance to any single monthly report,” Yellen said, adding that the overall labor market situation has been “quite positive”. Even so, in her first comments since Friday’s monthly jobs market data shocked markets and sent the dollar tumbling, Yellen backed off from making specific forecasts for interest rate increases, only saying they should come “gradually”. That was a clear shift from the Fed stance prior to the report, when she and other Fed policy makers had strongly suggested that the Fed could raise its benchmark federal funds rate either in June or July. In a speech on the economic outlook to the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, Yellen stressed that she thought the US economy would continue to grow moderately, that the labor market had nearly eliminated all slack, and that inflation would turn higher toward the Fed’s goal of two percent. “I see good reasons to expect that the positive forces supporting employment growth and higher inflation will continue to outweigh the negative ones,” she said. “As a result, I expect the economic expansion to continue, with the labor market improving further and GDP growing moderately.” But she acknowledged that the May jobs report, the worst in nearly six years in terms of
monthly jobs creation, had posed new questions and that the situation would have to be watched in case of a broader slowdown. Only 38,000 new positions were added in May, compared with some 155,000 the economists had forecast on average. And while the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent, the lowest since November 2007, it was mainly because of people dropping out of the labor market rather than people getting jobs. - Brexit threat -Yellen cautioned over a number of uncertainties facing US growth, including the strength of consumer spending and business investment, slowing Chinese growth, and the upcoming British referendum vote on splitting with the European Union. “A UK vote to exit the European Union could have significant economic repercussions,” she warned. While she stressed her confidence that the US economy remains in good shape, Yellen was clearly more dovish than when she said on May 27 that a federal funds rate increase could be justified “in the coming months”. Backing away from that on Monday, she said less precisely that if the jobs market continues to strengthen and prices pick up, “further gradual increases in the federal funds rate are likely to be appropriate.” She said the May labor market data could suggest that US businesses had decided to expand more slowly. “I intend to continue to pay close attention to developments in this area,” she said. Analysts said that although Yellen tried to paint a brighter picture than the jobs data suggested, her concerns were evident.

Taurus (B,V,U) 21 April to 20 May There are so many things going on around you that you may feel like running away from everything. Emotional & physical stress may make you feel a little down. Don’t allow others to put you in the middle of their problems. When asked to give your opinion, express your feelings strongly & clearly. You can lend, an ear to them but you cannot solve their problems for them, let them know that. Now is the time to take charge of your own destiny. You will be able to accomplish many things, but first you must make the effort to learn new techniques.
Watch and learn from strangers, especially those who are very different from you. Old routines or patterns will not work for you, this week. You need to look at things from a wider perspective. New experiences will find their way into your life. An early start to the week will increase your chances for success. Your timing still isn’t perfect, but if you’re determined, everything will move along fine at it’s own pace. Swimming by yourself is much better than sinking.
Sagittarius (BH,F,DH,TH) 22 Nov to 21 Dec
Gemini (K,CHH,GH) 21 May to 20 June Take the time to enjoy all of the favorite things that you really like to do. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. You need to open your mind & your heart to someone who shares your goals. There are no restrictions for you, this week. You may just find the answer to your personal & professional problems. Take your direction from the simple things in life. Your cycle will move up & you’ll be able to rediscover yourself & what you need to feel happy. You need to work hard to achieve your immediate goals.
Even though you’re part of a team, you need to put yourself ahead of others, for a while. You have a personal mission that takes precedence over everything else. Others are free to follow you, but you can do it on your own. Whether you’re giving out the orders or just moving ahead yourself, you’re bound for a success tour. Rise up and take long, purposeful steps to achieve your goals. You’ll be able to deter failure by insisting on certain precautions.
Capricorn (KH,J) 22 Dec to 20 Jan
Cancer (D,H) 21 June to 22 July You’ll seem to have a keener understanding of how things work. Look behind the scene & you’ll see all of your options. Play your cards right & you may be celebrating true success. Bring people together by showing them interesting new lifestyle or way to work. Personal relationships will feel more positive than ever. Invest time with family members & you’ll be creating great memories for everybody. Express your ideas with passion & you’ll learn new ways to impress your style.
Circumstances favor you only if you know your place among other stars. You need to choose a simple path rather than the more complex one that you’ve been on. If you want to have an effect on others, you need to be patient and allow the dream to come true. Those who loves you will understand your reluctance to change the rules too quickly. The problems you have now will turn into stepping stones for success in the future. Those you pushed you away will not be included in your plans.
Aquarius (G,S,SH) 21 Jan to 19 Feb
Leo (M) 23 July to 22 August Once you feel confident in yourself, you will be able to influence others. Peers may try to question your authority, reply with positive financial feedback. Collect & study facts & faces, you may be tested to remember, later. You are due to receive a gift or a bonus. Perform your heart out, enjoy the limelight. Offers you receive may be exciting, but you will need time to digest all of the information you have received. Family members, coworkers will vie for your attention.
Virgo (P) 23 August to 22 September Your need to organize your financial and personal situation. Look over your personal papers, make budgets and write everything down. You can get your point across and make valuable connections. Your personal life will stabilize. Don’t be confrontational. You’ll meet opposition if you try to push your ideas too much. Be observant and save your comments for a better time. You need to focus on your career. You’ll accomplish the most if you travel for business. If you have an idea, present it.
The changes will begin from here, even if it’s just a walk around the block. From where you stand, the past and future are in full view. You need to address your feelings by making peace with what has happened in the past. You know that you may have to pay others for their help, but you know it’ll be well worth it. Use your imagination to find ways to attract more followers. Your voice will be very convincing.
Pisces (D,CH,Z) 20 Feb to 20 March You’ll find yourself on roads you’ve never traveled before. Give or donate something that is no longer useful to you to someone who will appreciate your generosity. Stay on good terms with allies that need your advice. You can best exploit that potential with your business contacts. A well tuned proposal will get a green light. The changes will continue, moving into a more understandable pattern. Allow those capable to take over while you take care of yourself for a while. Respect your opponent without being afraid of them.

Watch for our next Issue!
For many of us, working compulsively feels good. And there’s a line of recent research that theorizes that this is one of the reasons we’re addicted to work. But just because it feeds your ego or makes you feel important, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. How do you break the cycle of long hours at the office and the constant checking of email at home? Start by rethinking how you define success. Your self-worth should not revolve around your status, paycheck, and prestige; it should take into account the quality of your relationships, your engagement in your community, and your physical and emotional wellbeing. Enlist the help of colleagues, family, and friends by showing them how it’s in their best interest to help you disengage from work. And stop using your phone as a timefiller. Resist this impulse by doing something you enjoy or look forward to instead.
