issouri City, Texas May 19, 2014 During a regular City Council Meeting, council members unanimously voted to elect Robin Elackatt as Mayor Pro-Tem. Regarding this appointment Elackatt stated “I am humbled and grateful for the trust placed in me by my fellow City Council Members and look forward to continuing my

mission of service to this great City, as together we make Missouri City the best place to live, work and play in the United States.” Elackatt, who was first sworn into office in 2009, won additional terms in 2011 and 2013 being unopposed. With his election of Mayor Pro-Tem, Elackatt will continue his crusade for fiscal responsibil-

ity (Cut-and-Balanced Budgets each year), accountable, transparent government and advocacy for Missouri City initiatives such as ongoing sidewalk repairs program, public safety, where he supported a new Police Mini-Station and Fire Stations to better serve the public safety needs of Missouri City residents, employee compensation and development; to name

here was a reason why the leaders of all the South Asian countries and one leader from further aďŹ eld accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to his inauguration. As within the country, there is a sense in the wider world that a signiďŹ cant political transformation has taken place in India.

The neighbours are eager to grasp what it means for them and their own interests. It was not easy for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to make the journey from Islamabad, but if he was courageous enough to do so — though not before clearance came from the Pakistan Army and hawkish sections of his own party — it was because he hoped that the new dispensation in Delhi would match that gesture in some way. In the event, the visit has ended up not making Mr.

Welcome initiatives Sharif’s position in Pakistan any easier. He refrained from bringing up the Kashmir issue in public while in Delhi, and for the ďŹ rst time, a Pakistani delegation did not hold a meeting with the Hurriyat. In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, Mr. Sharif called for attitudes to change from “confrontation to cooperationâ€?. The Indian side highlighted that Mr. Modi gave no quarter on the issue of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, and on speedy action in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case. Mr. Sharif had to go into damage-control mode when he returned to Pakistan. It cannot be emphasised more that India’s interests on the terrorism issue, as well as its

expressed keenness to move towards “full trade normalistationâ€? with Pakistan, are better served by strengthening Mr. Sharif’s hands. In fact, the imagination Prime Minister Modi showed with his invitation could have been taken forward with an India-Pakistan-Afghanistan trilateral meeting right there in his new ofďŹ ce, but perhaps it was thought to be too early. As it turned out, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, with whom Mr. Modi held a separate meeting, blamed the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba for last week’s attack on the Indian consulate in Herat. On Sri Lanka, the new Prime Minister has rightly signalled that there

is no change in India’s position that “full implementation of the Thirteenth Amendment and going beyond would assist the process of ethnic reconciliation, and contribute towards meeting the aspirations of the Tamil community for a just peace. Political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the AIADMK and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, were vociferous in their protest against the invitation to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, but their support to the Centre would lend more weight and credence to its position. Not doing so, on the other hand, would enable Colombo to play one against the other, to the detriment of Tamil interests. (Courtesy: The Hindu)

The People’s Lawyer www.peopleslawyer.net Richard M. Alderman Interim Dean of the Law Center

Time to clear up a few misconceptions about the law Q. I was shopping for a new car. After a long day of haggling I signed a contract. As soon as I got home I realized I had agreed to spend more than I really can afford. My friend told me I have three days to change my mind. Is this true? A. As far as the law is concerned, you generally do not have any time to change your mind after you sign a contract. There are only a few special types of contracts, such as time-share contracts, health-club contracts, door-to-door contract and contracts that place a lien on your home, where you are given a period of time to change your mind and rescind the agreement. In your case, unless you were misled or deceived into signing the contract you have no legal right to change your mind or be released from the agreement. The dealer, however, may still agree to release you from your once you explain your situation. Q. I had an accident that was clearly the other person’s fault. Unfortunately he has no insurance. I guess I am just out of luck? A. Whether someone has insurance does not affect liability. If the other person was at fault, and caused the accident, he is liable for the damage to your car. If he had insurance, the insurance company would pay. If he doesn’t have insurance, he still can be sued in small claims court. If he doesn’t make arrangements to pay after you win in court, he could lose his driver’s license. I should add that the best way to avoid this problem in the future is to make sure you have full coverage on your insurance. Q. I stopped paying a credit card account and was sued about eight years ago. I just received a letter for an attorney saying he was going to take steps to enforce the judgment against me. I told him it had been more than seven years and he could no longer collect. Am I right? A. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the time periods for collecting and enforcing a debt. First, a debt can be reported to the credit bureau, where it remains on your credit report for seven years. After seven years it becomes obsolete and generally is no longer reported. A lawsuit, however, must be filed within four years of when you stopped paying. After that time, you would have a defense you any lawsuit based on what is called the statute of limitations. Even after it is too late to sue, however, the debt still exists until it is paid or you file bankruptcy. If you are sued within the four-year period the judgment entered against you is enforceable to ten years, and may be renewed for another ten-year period. In your case, the creditor sued within the four-year period and was awarded a judgment. Based on what you say, the judgment is still enforceable. Q. I had an accident and fell in a local store. Although I am now fine, I did incur some medical bills. The store says it is not responsible and refuses to reimburse me. Can I take the store to justice court? Isn’t the store liable if I was injured while on its property? A. If the store is responsible, you can file suit in justice court to be reimbursed for your injuries. The store is not responsible, however, simply because the accident occurred on its property. For the store to be liable you must show that the accident was the store’s fault. Usually, this is done by showing the store was negligent, and that is why you fell. For example, if there was liquid on the floor and the store did not take steps to clean it up and as a result you slipped and fell, the store would be considered negligent and responsible. On the other hand, if you simply tripped over another customer and injured yourself, the store would not be at fault, and would have no responsibility. If you think your accident was caused by some fault on the part of the store, justice court may be the best place to get things resolved.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital partners with Fort Bend ISD to provide sports medicine services for student-athletes SUGAR LAND—(May 27, 2014) — Tristan Gray, star shortstop for the Elkins Knights varsity baseball team, was preparing for his all-important senior season when he dislocated his knee cap in a preseason practice.

the best possible care when needed,â€? he said. “We are proud to be Fort Bend ISD’s health care partner and proud to be associated with the district’s athletic program.â€? Fort Bend ISD athletic trainers are responsible for a broad range of activities related to athlete health and safety, and all are trained in using deďŹ brillators in the event of a cardiac emergency as well as other ďŹ rst aid and sports medicine skills. To stay up-to-date on the latest trends and learnings, the district’s athletic training staff will attend continuing education classes and an annual two-day sports medicine conference at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Fortunately for Gray, Elkins athletic trainer June Tomlin was at practice that day. She responded immediately, and once Gray was stabilized, she called team physician Dr. Timothy Sitter on his cell phone and alerted him. When the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital orthopedist examined Gray, he determined that the injury was not season-ending but would require physical therapy. Dr. Sitter outlined an extensive physical therapy program, and twice a day at school, Tomlin worked with Gray on the appropriate conditioning and strengthening exercises. When the season started, Gray was back in peak condition, and he proved it by being named co-MVP of District 235A and signing a national letter of intent to play baseball at Rice University. Gray was fortunate to have an experienced, licensed athletic trainer onsite at the time of his injury, one with a direct connection to one of the area’s leading sports medicine specialists. Now, thanks to a unique partnership between Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Fort Bend Independent School District, that comprehensive approach to athletic injuries will now be possible across the district. The groundbreaking ďŹ ve-year agreement calls for Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital to provide 11 assistant athletic trainers – one for each FBISD high school – to assist the current head athletic trainers in providing sports medicine services and on-site coverage at practices and games. “This unique partnership will deliver a direct beneďŹ t to our

They will spend two weeks in training at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine before reporting to their individual campuses prior to the start of summer athletics. “The safety of our studentathletes is always a top priority, said FBISD Athletic Director Philip O’Neal. “Adding an additional athletic trainer at each campus gives us the ability to cover more games and practices with skilled sports medicine staff and provide better service to our students. O’Neal said he believes the additional staff will enable FBISD to provide athletic trainer coverage at some middle school events, as well as offer additional injury pre-

vention and treatment services to students across the spectrum of sports that are offered at FBISD high schools – including specialized rehabilitation following an injury, as Gray received. “It’s not uncommon for schools to have a boys game and girls game under way at the same time at two different venues, especially in sports such as basketball, soccer and baseball/ softball, O’Neal said. “Now we can cover all our teams appropriately and provide the safest possible environment for our student-athletes. Under the agreement, Houston Methodist Sugar Land will also continue to provide ambulance coverage at all FBISD varsity football games; provide a lightning detection system to alert coaches when outdoor conditions are dangerous; and offer expedited admissions and appointments for FBISD athletes who require hospitalization or further examination by specialists at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. In addition, physicians from Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine will

continue to provide sideline coverage at every FBISD home varsity football game – as they have done for the past 15 years. Physicians will also continue to travel with FBISD football teams to playoff games across the state of Texas. “This comprehensive approach to sports medicine can make a tremendous difference for these student-athletes,â€? said Dr. Sitter, who serves as team physician for four Fort Bend ISD schools and is chief medical ofďŹ cer of the Houston Dynamo. “No one expects to get hurt playing a sport in high school, but unfortunately it does happen. Having experienced, skilled athletic trainers on site, working in concert with sports medicine physicians, can help minimize the impact of injuries and enable young athletes to heal promptly and properly.â€?

Modi’s cabinet: the new team Calls for justice for pregnant Pakistan woman beaten to death running India

N

EW DELHI, May 27, 2014 (AFP) - New Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his cabinet Tuesday, combining several portfolios to cut the number of government positions and giving many regional politicians their first national experience. The following is a list of the senior figures in “Team Modi” who face sky-high expectations after the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the clearest mandate in the country for 30 years. Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley A successful corporate lawyer, Jaitley is the most powerful member of the new government after Modi, holding two vital and difficult portfolios. He served as commerce minister in a previous BJP government which was in power 1998-2004. In the last parliament, the 61year-old was leader of the opposition in India’s upper house, winning a reputation as a forceful speaker and leading critic of the left-leaning Congress government. A longtime Modi ally, Jaitley provided one of the only items of bad news for the BJP on results day on May 16 when he lost what was supposed to be a safe seat in northwestern Punjab state.

The former vice president of India’s powerful cricket board describes himself as a “liberal political activist grounded in law, ethics and humanism”. Jaitley said Tuesday he was aware he was taking over at a “challenging time” due to growth of under 5.0 percent and consumer inflation nearing double figures. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj The BJP’s most influential woman, Swaraj is known as a strong and often humorous orator in her native Hindi language. She served as leader of the opposition in the lower house of the last parliament.

Now 62, she became India’s youngest cabinet minister in 1977 after the end of Indira Gandhi’s emergency government and has handled the information, broadcasting and telecommunications portfolios since. Swaraj was one of the few BJP leaders to oppose Modi’s elevation as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in September last year and Modi was once thought unlikely to give her a senior role. She will have to manage tricky relations with China, repair severe damage to US relations provoked by the arrest of an Indian diplomat in December in New York, and handle a tough assignment on Pakistan. Modi invited Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his swearing-in, sending a message he hopes to make progress in stalled peace talks with the longstanding nuclear-armed rival. Home Singh

Minister

Rajnath

BJP president and the highestranking member of the party, Singh is a former chief minister of northern Uttar Pradesh state who has previously served as a federal agriculture minister. Like Modi, 62-year-old Singh rose through the ranks of the RSS, a grassroots right-wing Hindu group closely linked to the BJP. He was a physics lecturer before becoming a politician. Singh is prized by Modi as a good administrator and a key loyalist who will now manage the police and domestic intelligence agencies. His key challenges will be handling continued unrest in the Muslim-majority Himalayan territory of Kashmir, a Maoist insurgency in eastern and central India, as well as homegrown Islamist militant networks. Depending on Modi’s ambition, the under-paid, understaffed and corruption-plagued police force might also be a tar-

get for reform.

Controversial pick for agriculture Sanjeev Kumar Balyan was elected to the Indian parliament from the Muzaffarnagar area of Uttar Pradesh state which was hit by deadly violence between Hindus and Muslims that displaced more than 50,000 Muslims last year. Balyan, a doctor, faces charges for making inflammatory speeches that whipped up communal anger in the sugarcane belt of north India, located 75 miles (120 kilometres) from New Delhi. The cabinet includes just one Muslim, Najma Heptulla, who was given responsibility for minority affairs. Others One major winner is Nitin Gadkari, the former president of the BJP who had to step down in January 2013 due to corruption allegations relating to his business dealings. He was given one of several expanded “super ministries” of roads, highways and shipping -a key responsibility given Modi’s commitments to improving India’s decrepit infrastructure. There is also space for one of the members of the NehruGandhi dynasty which has run the rival Congress party since independence and has provided three prime ministers. Maneka Gandhi, widow of Sanjay Gandhi and the sister-inlaw of Congress supremo Sonia, was given charge of women and child development. Former army chief V.K. Singh and rising BJP star Piyush Goyal, a former banker, were also inducted, as was Hindu hardliner Uma Bharti who as water resources minister was tasked with rejuvenating the polluted but holy river Ganges. Harsh Vardhan, a doctor praised for his work on eradicating polio in India and an antitobacco campaigner, was named to the health ministry.

AHORE, May 28, 2014 (AFP) - The husband of a pregnant Pakistani woman who was beaten to death outside Lahore’s High Court for marrying against her family’s wishes vowed Wednesday to fight for justice. Farzana Parveen, 25, was attacked outside Lahore’s grand high court building by more than two dozen brick-wielding attackers including her brother and father, who has been arrested, police said. Three-months pregnant Parveen, whom police earlier identified as ‘Farzana Iqbal’, had gone to testify in defence of her husband Muhammad Iqbal -- who was accused by her relatives of kidnapping her and forcing her into the marriage. Speaking to AFP by telephone from his home village of Jaranwala where he had gone to bury Parveen earlier that day, Iqbal said: “We demand justice. We were being threatened since we got married.” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay also strongly condemned the killing, urging the Pakistani government to take “urgent and strong measures” to put an end to so-called honour killings in the country. Iqbal, 45, said he and his wife had survived a previous attack during the first hearing of the case on May 12. “On Tuesday as we were going to court from our lawyer’s office almost 30 people attacked us, including her father, brothers and cousins,” he said. The group of 10 or so people accompanying him were overwhelmed by the suddenness of the attack and fled in all directions, he said. “One of her brothers shot at her but missed, then the women in their group fell upon her and her brother and father finished her off,” said Iqbal. “The most painful thing is that nobody came forward to save my wife, the police were there

The body of Farzana Iqbal being taken by her husband. and hundreds of lawyers were there along with ordinary men, but they all just watched like spectators.” Police officer Mushtaq Muhammad said Parveen’s father Muhammad Azeem had been detained while five others -- two brothers and three cousins -- remained at large. Another police officer, Rana Akhtar, told AFP police were launching raids in the Nankana Sahib district of Punjab province to arrest the accused. - Growing apathy “I am deeply shocked by the death of Farzana Parveen, who, as in the case of so many other women in Pakistan, was brutally murdered by members of her own family simply because she married a man of her own choice,” the UN body’s Pillay said. “I do not even wish to use the phrase ‘honour killing’: there is not the faintest vestige of honour in killing a woman in this way.” Despite the gruesome and public nature of the killing in Pakistan’s most liberal city, media reaction has been relatively muted -- indicating what activists said was a growing apathy within society amid rising extremism. “The court’s regular resident police force was mysteriously absent from the scene, unable to take preventive action -- or to provide protection or pre-emp-

tion to this and countless other foregone and foretold dis-honour killing cases,” said Tahira Abdullah, a prominent women’s rights campaigner. Feminist Samina Rehman added: “The incident occurred in front of hundreds of people but nobody stepped forward to save them because people are afraid of mob justice. “People don’t speak up because they fear that they would either be framed for blasphemy or declared un-Islamic.” Last year 869 women died in so-called “honour killings” according to the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Conviction rates are very low due to Pakistan’s blood-money laws which allow kin to forgive perpetrators, usually family members in such cases. In a statement, the rights commission said Parveen’s father had shown no remorse when he surrendered to the police, adding: “Such brazen actions have been encouraged by the authorities’ failure to fulfil their duty to protect citizens’ lives.” Iqbal, however, was undeterred. “There are no hurdles. Each and every single individual has been named and everybody saw them so there should not be any delay in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he said.

Explosion on tanker off Barack Obama defends U.S. foreign policy at West Point speech but calls for Japan coast: coastguard military restraint in the future TOKYO, May 29, 2014 (AFP) - Japan’s coastguard was rushing Thursday to deal with an explosion and subsequent fire aboard a tanker off the country’s coast, officials and the prime minister said.

Julie Pace And Jim Kuhnhenn, Associated Press EST POINT, N.Y. — President Barack Obama declared Wednesday the U.S. remains the world’s most indispensable nation, but in a major speech defending his foreign policy, he called for restraint before embarking on more military adventures.

W

Mr. Obama’s address signalled a concerted effort by the White House to push back against critics who contend his approach to global problems has been too cautious and has emboldened adversaries in Syria, Russia and China. It’s a criticism that deeply frustrates the president and his advisors, who say his efforts to keep the U.S. out of more military conflicts are in line with the views of the American public. Standing before the newest class of officers graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, Mr. Obama said, “I would betray my duty to you, and to the country we love, if I sent you into harm’s way simply because I saw a problem somewhere in the world that needed fixing, or because I was worried about critics who think military intervention is the only way for America to avoid looking weak.” As the U.S. emerges from the two wars that followed the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Obama said terrorism remains the most direct threat to U.S. security. But he argued as the threat has shifted from a centralized Al-Qaeda to an array of affiliates, the U.S. response must change too. Rather than launching large-scale military efforts,

“We had information that there was an explosion on the tanker Shoko-maru,” a spokesman at the local coast guard office said, adding it was near Himeji Port in the west. Coastguards have arrived at the location, which is around 450 kilometres (280 miles) west of Tokyo, but were “yet to confirm the safety of the eight crew members on board”, he said.

he called for partnering with countries where terrorist networks seek a foothold. That effort includes a new US$5billion fund to help countries fight terrorism and to expand funding for Defence Department intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, special operations and other activities. Mr. Obama cast the bloody civil war in Syria as more of counterterrorism challenge than a humanitarian crisis. He defended his decision to keep the U.S. military out of the conflict, but said he would seek to increase support for the Syrian opposition, as well as neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq that have faced an influx of refugees and fear the spread of terrorism. “In helping those who fight for the right of all Syrians to choose their own future, we also push back against the growing number of extrem-

ists who find safe haven in the chaos,” Mr. Obama said. One plan being considered by the White House is a new project to train and equip members of the Free Syrian Army on tactics, including counterterrorism. The president’s speech came one day after he outlined plans to wind down the U.S.’s lengthy war in Afghanistan by yearend 2016. The blueprint calls for keeping 9,800 troops in Afghanistan for training and counterterrorism after combat missions end this year, then withdrawing them within two years. The drawdown plan is central to Mr. Obama’s longstanding pledge to bring to a close both the Afghan conflict and the Iraq war. He was greeted by cheers from the graduating cadets when he noted they had the distinction of being “the first class

to graduate since 9/11 who may not be sent into combat in Iraq or Afghanistan.” Even as he heralded the end of the two wars, the president said the U.S. would continue to use military force on its own “when our core interests demand it — when our people are threatened, when our livelihood is at stake, or when the security of our allies is in danger.” A centrepiece of Mr. Obama’s address was a defence of his preference for acting as part of an international coalition instead of pressing ahead alone. He challenged skeptics who see that as a sign of weakness, arguing instead it highlights the U.S.’s ability to lead on the world stage. He cited recent efforts to rally European support for sanctions against Russia after the Kremlin annexed the

Crimean peninsula from Ukraine. While the president insisted Russia is now isolated, Critics contend his inability to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin from taking Crimea in the first place was a sign of weakness. Mr. Obama also praised ongoing diplomatic efforts between Iran, the U.S. and its negotiating partners — Germany, Britain, France, China and Russia — that aim to strip the Islamic republic of its nuclear capabilities. While he said the odds of reaching an agreement are still long, he also said a diplomatic breakthrough would be “more effective and durable than what would be achieved through the use of force.” “Throughout these negotiations, it has been our willingness to work through multilateral channels that kept the world on our side,” he said. Analysts described the speech as a welcome evolution of U.S. foreign policy. Mr. Obama seemed to be saying the U.S. had learned it cannot impose its will on

Speaking in parliament, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe interrupted a debate to announce: “In waters off Hyogo (prefecture), a tanker has exploded and is currently in flames.” The Kobe Shimbun, a local newspaper, said the vessel was around two kilometres south of the port, which sits in a busy shipping area. The paper added that the 998ton ship was not believed to have been fully laden. Black smoke was seen billowing from the ship, up to a height of 100 metres (300 feet) the paper said, citing a coastguard official

the rest of the world, said David Livingstone, an expert in international security at London’s Chatham House. Nonetheless, his words went against the “American instinct to go in hard with the military first” when crisis erupts. “America has to be in sympathy with the world, and its leadership has been perceived to be unilateral,” Mr. Livingstone said. In the Gulf state of Qatar, Salman Shaikh, the Brookings Center director, saw the speech as a boost for consensus, but said broke no new ground for a president who has distanced himself from the “interventionist wars” of his predecessor, George W. Bush. “He talked about partnerships, working multilaterally, which is all to be welcomed,” Shaikh said, cautioning that had to be balanced against “whether the U.S. is really willing to lead across the Middle East.” Courtesy: The Associated Press

Turn your NY apartment into a restaurant by Jennie MATTHEW

ent part of New York, as well as learn about Italian regional cuisine.

NEW YORK, May 22, 2014 (AFP) - It’s Sunday night and Giuseppe Marrone is teaching perfect strangers how to make perfect gnocchi as they slurp on Spritz cocktails in his New York apartment.

“Giuseppe really made you feel you were part of his life, which I thought was great,” she said. Jeni Kreiger, a 34-year-old tour guide and masseuse, regularly dines in some of New York’s finest restaurants but loved the more intimate experience.

The 29-year-old would-be restaurateur who once worked at The Ritz has thrown open his home to foodies hungry for the ultimate niche experience: the New York dinner party.

“Oh heck yes, I already made the gnocchi at home. It was so awesome,” she told AFP.

In a city with so many fabulous restaurants and where so few can afford large apartments, dining at home is rare enough for people to pay to be invited. On a mission to entertain and introduce Americans to authentic Italian cooking, Marrone and Chiara Mortaroli, 28, laid on a spectacular three-course meal complete with wine and cocktails for just $60 a head. And how did they arrange it? Through CookApp (www. cookapp.com), a tech start-up that expanded from Argentina to New York three months ago, allowing chefs to turn their homes into a restaurant for the night.

“I challenged (fellow guest) Roberth to a cartwheel competition on the terrace so you can’t do that in a restaurant!” Friends share food prepared by Giuseppe Marrone on May 11, 2014 in his apartment in New York where Marrone is teaching perfect strangers how to make perfect gnocchi (AFP Photos/Timothy A. Clary) es of their eight guests as they encourage them to help make the gnocchi. - ‘Super fun’ Without the Internet, along with a shared interest in Italian food and meeting new people, the eclectic crowd of diverse young professionals would never have met.

Squeezed round a table in the sitting room, each guest is given recipes for the gnocchi and lemon tarts, rolled into little scrolls and done up with ribbon. Dinner began with seafood salad, bruschetta and salmon filo pastries, before gnocchi and ragu that Marrone took

delight in saying had taken 18 hours to cook. “Oh my God, I loved it. I thought it was super fun,” publishing company executive Lauren Ruotolo told AFP. Living in Gramercy Park, she relished the chance to do something different in a differ-

- Meeting people in Big Apple CookApp launched in New York in February, after making a real splash in Buenos Aires, and 57 events have been hosted in the Big Apple so far, cofounder Pedro Rivas told AFP. The city of eight million is an attractive market with its rich cultural and culinary heritage, an obsession with all things new and love of nightlife. In a city with a constant influx of new people, Rivas says some of the best CookApp customers are those who have recently relocated to the Big Apple.

Mortaroli, who works in a Chelsea art gallery, discovered CookApp on Facebook and felt it was the perfect way to combine her love of cooking with meeting new people.

“CookApp really does connect people who don’t know a lot of people in the city,” Rivas said. “There’s obviously people older and younger, but the majority are between 25 and 45. “And there are slightly more women than men... we also see the same trend in Buenos Aires -- perhaps women are more prone to this or closer to the foodie culture.” Mortaroli says everyone she has met has been good fun. Most join CookApp through Facebook. Prospective chefs also apply and have to get approval from CookApp before they host their first dinner party. “We home in on three things,” says Rivas. “Cleanliness and safety, cooking ability and last and most important, how good a host they are.” Afterwards, diners grade the experience and Rivas says 95 percent of reviews are four to five stars. There are also those who come looking for love. “There are a bunch of dating apps but here you’re in a social event. Sometimes it happens -- I’ve seen it firsthand,” said Rivas.

This is the second dinner party she has hosted, and she has been to two others as a guest. “We do big group dinners with our friends all the time, where everyone puts in money, and then people call up saying, ‘Can I bring my friend?’” Mortaroli said, clattering around the kitchen preparing lemon tarts. “I love to meet different kinds of people, especially from different cultures and when Chiara told me about this, I said ‘Let’s do it!’” said Marrone. Charming, chatty and larger than life, the two friends work the room, topping up the glass-

Michelle Obama takes on school meal iLead is Houston’s premier interfaith critics, as House GOP bill advances and beyond. While many schools have had success putting the rules in place, others have said they are too restrictive and costly. Schools pushing for changes say limits on sodium and requirements for more whole grains are particularly challenging, while some school officials say kids are throwing away fruits and vegetables that are required.

F

irst lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday made a rare foray into a Capitol Hill dispute, using a White House event to rally support for school meal nutrition rules that Republicans are pushing to loosen. The first lady successfully lobbied for those standards in 2010, and has since become the public face of this and other initiatives aimed at improving the dietary habits of children. But some schools have complained the rules are too restrictive and costly -- and House Republicans have a new bill aimed at addressing those concerns. An agriculture spending bill approved by a House subcommittee last week would allow schools to waive the standards if they have a net loss on

school food programs for a sixmonth period.

to make foods healthier for kids.

Seeing her nutritional standards under threat, the first lady hosted a discussion with school leaders on Tuesday afternoon at the White House where she ripped efforts to roll back those guidelines.

The first lady rarely enters congressional policy debates, despite being a powerful advocate for the president on the campaign trail during the past two presidential elections. But childhood nutrition is her signature issue, and the House bill would aim to undermine the standards she lobbied for.

“This is Obama said.

unacceptable,”

The first lady said families realize the country is facing a “health crisis,” and the “last thing we can afford to do right now is play politics with kids’ health.” Sam Kass, director of Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move initiative to combat childhood obesity, called the GOP bill “a real assault” on administration efforts

Rep. Robert Aderholt, RAla., who wrote the bill, said he was responding to requests from school food directors. The standards championed by the first lady have been phased in over the past two school years, with more changes coming in 2014. The rules set fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits on foods in the lunch line

The Agriculture Department, which administers the rules, has tweaked them along the way to try to help schools that have concerns. The department scrapped limits on the amount of proteins and grains that kids could eat after students complained they were hungry. Last week, USDA announced it would allow some schools to delay serving whole grain pastas just hours after the House subcommittee approved the opt-out language. School groups have been split. The School Nutrition Association, which represents school nutrition directors and companies that sell food to schools, has lobbied for changes to the standards, saying some are too restrictive. The national PTA is pushing lawmakers to keep the standards intact. “At a time when families are working hard to live healthy lives, school meals should be supporting families’ efforts, not working against them,” PTA President Otha Thornton wrote to members of Congress. Two Brothers inspire Young Kids to Make a Difference

welve-year-old Nathan Manaker had not been hopeful about his chances when the Scripps National Spelling Bee got under way on Wednesday, and he turned out to be right. Semlani brothers Yash 7, and Jay 4

Manaker, a seventh-grader from Orono, Maine, was among the first spellers ejected as winnowing of the 281 contestants, ages 8 to 15, began ahead of the finals on Thursday night. Spellers from across the United States and a raft of foreign countries looked to the ceiling for help, traced words on their hands and forearms and breathed deeply when faced with such challenges as “kuchen,” “braggadocio,” and “witloof.” One of the first round of spellers, Manaker advanced to the microphone at a hotel ballroom outside Washington. When pronouncer Jacques Bailly gave him “paradigm,” Manaker later said he thought, “I don’t know how to spell it. I’ll just give it my best guess.” He guessed wrong, spelling the word “peridyme.” The fourth speller out, Manaker left the stage with his head down to be greeted by his mother, Jessica. A first-time contestant with an interest in theater, Manaker said he had not come to win: “I’m kind of glad I got out because I

The story is about 3 kids ( two brothers and their friend) 8,7 and 4 who have taken it upon them to “Make a Difference” and help kids in need and are inspiring other kids to do the same. Khushi Jeswani of Ghana spells her word before the judges. really can’t sit still that long, and I really need a bathroom break.” He was among 24 spellers eliminated in the first of two preliminary rounds on Wednesday. Words in the first round leaned toward foods, with “tahini,” “kielbasa,” “masala,” “mozzarella” and “maraschino” all nailed by contestants. Spellers looked for any help they could get. When Mitchell Robson, 12, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, was given “poignant,” he asked Bailly, “Could I have that in a funny sentence?” before getting it right. Contestants, who emerged from an original pool estimated at more than 11 million students, went through a computerized test of spelling and vocabulary

on Tuesday. A computerized test for semifinalists will follow the preliminary rounds on Wednesday. The spelling bee finals on Thursday will be broadcast on ESPN. The winner will take home a $30,000 scholarship and other prizes. Indian-Americans have dominated the venerable spelling contest in recent years, winning the last six in a row. Almost a quarter of spellers at this year’s contest have names pointing to South Asian origin. Microsoft Corp, named the contest’s technology champion, handed out Microsoft Surface RT tablet equipped with the company’s Microsoft’s Spelling Bees application on Tuesday.

“I have seen male actors cribbing about putting moustache and beard. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was exciting and fun to get into disguise of a man, Vidya, 36, told reporters here at the trailer launch of the film today. “The moment I got into the avatar, my body language and voice, changed automatically. I loved the get up of an astrologer... Half bald with dirty teeth. People on the sets could not recognise me whenever I came in different avatars,” she added.

The trailer of `Bobby Jasoos` was launched in the presence of her parents and real-life detectives, mostly women. “It is not just a detective-thriller. It is a `dramedy` (drama and comedy). It is a story of a small town girl. This film is no parallel with `Kahaani`,” said `The Dirty Picture` star.

Vidya would be seen in various avatars in the film. In real life too, the National Award winning actress has done `detective` act but only for fun. “I

EW DELHI: The entire nation witnessed the historic moment when Narendra Modi took oath as the 15th prime minister of India. Besides all important dignitaries in the world present at Rashtrapati Bhavan to be a part of this big day, Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan too made his presence felt there. The 48-year-old actor was seen to be comfortably seated alongside father Salim Khan at the venue. The entire `Khandaan` was in attendance. Salman was accompanied by mother Salma and younger

brother Sohail Khan. The other B-Town biggies who were captured included Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha and Anupam Kher. Also, actor Vivek Oberoi who earlier in the day had tweeted:“On my way to delhi! Atmosphere even in the aircraft is electric! Everyone is buzzing about the swearing in! #NaMoPm”, was present at the ceremony. However, the invites were sent to mega star Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar and Rajinikanth as well but they could not make it to the grand event.

Shah Rukh Khan may have been excluded from PM designate Narendra Modi’s list of invitees for the latter’s oath taking ceremony in the national capital on Monday — invites have been sent to other film industry dignitaries like Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Rajinikanth and Salman Khan — but the actor is cool about it. In fact, he says that he wishes the new government well for the landslide victory and believes that, now, the chances of positive change are immense. “What a mandate! Exceptional!” exclaims the actor about the recent Lok Sabha election results, speaking to us over the phone.

then nobody can question that ... now decisions have to be taken, things have to change,” he says. The actor believes that India is already on the verge of becoming a big power with a stable government emerging from such a solid mandate is really a big leap forward. “There is no excuse for the country to not go forward now. Decisions have to be taken and things have to change,” he asserts.

“This is clearly a sign of our times where people have decided not for a party, but for a stable government. It gives a lot of reason and power to change things,” he says, adding that a government formed with allies is unstable. “It’s difficult to take solo and solid decisions (in a coalition government). So if you’re with the left, you can’t take a capitalist decision. If you have the strength of numbers,

Shah Rukh also says that he doesn’t have any specific expectations from the new government, but wants an atmosphere of overall well-being. “The country should change from within and from the outside. While we should have a fantastic international face and front, we also ought to have a sense of comfort within the country. And if larger issues get sorted, our film industry will follow suit.” (HT).

“I’m extremely apolitical, but I know people don’t believe it. They have issues with this. But I have my views on friendships and that’s totally separate,” he reasons, perhaps hinting at his friendship with the Gandhis.

Mallika Sherawat at Oxford Union; ‘depressing’ India comment finally pays off by Apoorva Rao MUMBAI -Mallika Sherawat, the actress who makes it hard for people to ignore her has been invited to Oxford University to a debate on gender issues. MUMBAI: After getting a good response for his last outing `ABCD-Any Body Can Dance`, choreographer-director Remo D`Souza is back with the sequel of the dance drama, starring Varun Dhawan. The new film is based on a true story and D`Souza feels the `Main Tera Hero` star is the perfect choice for the role. “The previous film was the story of Vishnu sir (played by Prabhu Deva). But the sequel is the journey of a boy to take his dance troupe from India to America. So, this character is pivotal in the film. I wanted somebody who is a brilliant actor and dancer and Varun is apt for this part,” D`Souza said. `ABCD 2` is expected to go on floors in July and will hit theatres mid next year. Apart from Varun and Shraddha Kapoor, the dance drama has all the budding actors of the dance reality shows including Lauren Gottilieb, Punit Pathak and Dharmesh among others. “I will never leave these kids behind. I will always work with them whenever I will make any dance based film. All of them are there in the sequel too,” he said. Post the success of `ABCD`, the 42-year-old `Batameez Dil` choreographer feels that now Indian audience is ready to watch a dance-based film with a strong storyline. “My last film proved that our audience want to watch dancebased film. When I was making the film many people from the industry warned me saying that the film will not do well as nobody would go to watch these reality TV kids on big screen. But I did not scrap the film,” Remo said.

Apart from films, Remo is back on the judging panel of `Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7` with co-judges Karan Johar and Madhuri Dixit. Remo said he returns as a judge on the show every time because the show helps him become a better person in life. “I learn a lot on this show. I learn dance from these kids. I learnt how to bring perfection in your work from Madhuriji. I have learnt to become a confident filmmaker from Karan. Everyday, I Iearn something new on the show,” he said. Without divulging much details about his upcoming project with Johar, Remo said the formal announcement of the film will be made soon. He said the film is an action story based on cars and racing. “At the historic Oxford university, what a journey, Haryana to Oxford”, the Hiss actress tweeted about her presence at the university. The Murder actress who has barely made a mark in the film industry, Indian or international, has been cleverly creating photo-ops and other publicity opportunities for herself using bold outfits and statements alike. In 2013, at the Cannes International Film Festival, the actress in an interview said that she found India as “a very regressive and depressing nation when the state of women is concerned”. This remark invited much scorn from top Bollywood actress such as Priyanka Chopra who even thought Sherawat’s

comment was an ‘unfair one’. The comment however turned rewarding for her as she was later invited to the debate titled ‘This House Believes Gender Exists to Oppress’ at Oxford Union in February this year.

Google revs up driverless Lookout “thefties” nab selfcar, axes steering wheel ies of smartphone thieves

S

AN FRANCISCO, May 28, 2014 (AFP) Mobile security startup Lookout is turning smartphones and tablets against gadget thieves with a new feature that -- when possible -- will snap a picture of the culprit. A new theft alert function added Wednesday to Lookout’s premium service for Apple and Android mobile devices sets out to pinpoint where a gadget might be and, in some cases, even take the thief’s picture. “We are not providing this information for you to go out and find the device yourself,” Lookout product manager Greg Lou told AFP. “It is so you can give it to the police so they can find it for you.”

The new Google prototype driverless car. (Photo: Google) LOS ANGELES, (AFP) Google unveiled plans to build its own self-driving car -- minus the steering wheel -- that it hopes to begin testing in the coming months. “They won’t have a steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal... because they don’t need them. Our software and sensors do all the work,” Google’s Chris Urmson said in a blog post late Tuesday. Urmson said Google plans to build about 100 prototype vehicles, “and later this summer, our safety drivers will start testing early versions of these vehicles that have manual controls.” He added, “If all goes well, we’d like to run a small pilot program here in California in the next couple of years.” For Google, the car marks a shift away from adapting vehicles made by others in its quest to pioneer individual transport that needs only a stop-and-go function. “It was inspiring to start with a blank sheet of paper and ask, ‘What should be different about this kind of vehicle?’” the post said. The top speed of the batterypowered prototypes will be 40 kilometers (25 miles) per hour and are designed for utility, not luxury. “We’re light on creature comforts, but we’ll have two seats (with seatbelts), a space for passengers’ belongings, buttons to start and stop, and a screen that shows the route -- and that’s about it,” Urmson said. The blog post shows a photo of a prototype and an artist’s rendering -- both rounded bug-

looking vehicles. “We took a look from the ground up of what a self-driving car would look like,” Google co-founder Sergey Brin told the Re/code conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. “The reason I’m so excited about these prototypes and the self-driving car project in general is the ability to change the world and the community around you,” Brin added. Brin said Google is likely “to partner with a lot of companies” on the project, but declined to elaborate. Until now Google has been re-fitting Lexus and Honda cars to work as self-driving ones. In an interview with Re/code, Urmson said the new Google cars will have numerous safety features learned from the company’s research. “In our car there is no steering wheel so we have to design really fundamental capabilities,” he said. “So we have effectively two motors and they work so if one of them fails the other can steer, so the car can always control where it’s going, and similar with brakes.” In addition to crash protection for the occupant, the car has features to avoid pedestrians and other road users. “So the front end is a whole new approach where it’s compressible foam and a flexible windshield that should do a much better job of protecting people if an accident should occur,” Urmson told Re/code. Several

automakers

been working on autonomous or semi-autonomous features for cars, such as self-parking, but no fully autonomous car has come to market. A January report by the research firm IHS said selfdriving cars could start hitting highways by 2025 and number as many as 35 million globally by 2035. Roger Kay, analyst with Endpoint Technologies, said however that Google is accelerating this effort, which could shake up the slow-moving auto sector. “It looks as if the technology is coming to fruition faster than the public is ready to accept it, which is a bit surprising,” Kay told AFP. Kay added that the new technology needs a company outside the auto sector to make it happen quickly. “My sense is that if Google wants to do it right, they have to do it themselves,” he said. “The auto companies want tomorrow to look like yesterday. They want to incorporate new things but don’t want to change the essential equation.” Kay said that he believes consumers will eventually embrace the technology because “it’s liberating.” “I can’t wait for this. I hate driving,” he said. “But also, individual human beings make suboptimal decisions all the time.. driving seems complicated but it can be broken down into very simple stimulus reactions, and that lends itself beautifully to computers.”

Pregnant women should take iodide supplement, docs say Pregnant women should take an iodide-containing supplement to protect the brain development of their babies, according to the leading U.S. group of pediatricians. Iodine, which the body can get from iodide, is needed to make the thyroid hormones that are required for children’s brain development before and after birth. “Women who are childbearing age need to pay attention to this topic as well, because about half of the pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned,” Dr. Jerome Paulson said. “Women in the early part of the pregnancy may not realize they’re pregnant.” Paulson is the chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health, which authored the policy statement. He is also a pediatrician at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The recommendations were published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday. People typically get the iodine they need from table salt, which in the U.S. is fortified with iodide. Eating processed foods exposes Americans to salt that is not iodized, however. The Council writes that past research has suggested about one-third of pregnant women in the U.S. are marginally iodine deficient. Also, only about 15 percent of women take a supplement containing an adequate amount of iodide.

The authors also suggest pregnant or lactating women avoid nitrate, found in contaminated well water, and thiocyanate, which is usually found in cigarette smoke and certain vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. The two chemicals can disrupt the ability of iodine to be processed into hormones. However, women rarely Pregnant and breastfeeding women get 290 micrograms of iodide per day. eat enough of the vegetables for thiocyanate levels from The American Thyroid Asso- dation. Women may need to take a supplement with 150 micrograms of iodide to reach that recommended level, but most prenatal and lactation vitamins contain less, according to the Council. “Breastfeeding mothers should take a supplement that includes at least 150 micrograms of iodide and use iodized table salt,” the Council writes. Additionally, the Council says women may need to be tested for iodine deficiency if they are vegan or don’t eat fish. “Obviously iodine is critical to the fetal and child brain,” Dr. Loralei Thornburg said. “Therefore having a diet that’s rich in iodine is critical.” Thornburg was not involved in making the new recommen-

New York.

“Although many women are largely iodine deficient, most women do get iodine in the (form) of food,” she told Reuters Health. “This isn’t something women should freak out about just yet.” Thornburg said the ideal amount of iodide supplementation depends on how much of the compound women already get from their diets. The Council says a pregnant or lactating woman’s combined iodide intake should be between 290 and 1100 micrograms per day. Specifically, it should be in the form of potassium iodide. “This is something that’s fairly routine,” Paulson said. “I think what we’re saying is people need to pay attention to the details of what they’re doing, but not radically change their behavior.”

egetarianism is not just a food choice, it is a philosophy. For those who care about the harm their meals cause living beings, perhaps veganism is the way to go. Vegans do not eat any product for which any sentient being has been exploited or hurt.

They do not consume meat, poultry, foods of animal origin like honey and eggs, dairy and milk by-products. They don’t even use products made from animal parts like hide. Vegan eating patterns are safe for all age groups, including pregnant and lactating mothers. However, it is advisable to supplement the diet with Vitamin B12, zinc, chlorine and omega 3 fatty acids. Your diet determines the acid-

base balance of your stomach and a vegan diet is the closest to keeping it stable. Alkaline v/s acidic The normal acid-base balance of the body should be 7.4 pH. According to naturopathy, our body is healthy when it is alkaline and unhealthy when it is acidic. When the body becomes acidic, it starts retaining water, accumulates fat and gets toxic. The body is then prone to sluggishness and infection. Too

favorable review to a rival product from Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. The FDA is set to rule on the Cubist drug shortly. Both drugs are designed to treat serious acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, or ABSSSI. The infections involve deep tissue or are associated with an underlying disease such

as diabetes. They are aimed at serious Gram-positive infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Durata’s drug, known generically as dalbavancin, is given in two doses, the first on day one and the second on day eight. (Reuters)

Finally, the Council recommends that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proceed with appropriate regulation of perchlorate in waterways. Perchlorate, which is a chemical used in rocket fuels and explosives, can disrupt the body’s use of iodine to make thyroid hormones. “I think people can have some control over their exposure to tobacco smoke, but they may not even be aware of the perchlorate or other chemicals in the water,” Paulson said. The Council also writes that there is some inconsistency between the iodide on the label of supplements and their actual content. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration should “do what is necessary to allow consumers to identify and use iodide supplements with confidence” if the industry’s actions are insufficient, it adds. (Source: Reuters) much meat makes the body acidic and slows the metabolism, which can lead to kidney and liver stones, and hair loss. It is easier for an alkaline body to lose excess weight. So eat more soup, fruit, coconut water and vegetables. Why Alkaline helps The body during digestion and repair creates toxic waste products. This toxicity can lead to calcium loss, weak bones, muscle fatigue and accelerated ageing. It can also trigger cancer and osteoporosis. This is why many athletes try veganism as a form of specialised nutrition to improve their performance. Even though a nonvegetarian diet is high in protein, iron and calcium, a vegan diet plan compensates for it by consuming these foods: sprouts (protein + minerals), tofu (protein + minerals) and quinoa grain (protein). Mix kelp and spirulina to get super-oxidants, iron and vitamins. DONT MAKE THESE MISTAKES Even though a vegetarian diet is healthy, many people make these common errors... 1. Eating fried foods. 2. Consuming refined foods and fast foods like namkeen, bhujiya, papad and pickle which lead to weight gain. 3. Too much sugar in tea, coffee. 4. If vegetarians can avoid or minimise these habits, they can escape many common lifestyle disorders.

Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees

A SUMMARY OF THE 2013 ANNUAL REPORTS A MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC: Medicare The Trustees project that the Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust Fund will be the next to face depletion after the DI Trust Fund. The projected date of HI Trust Fund depletion is 2026, two years later than projected in last year’s report, at which time dedicated revenues would be sufficient to pay 87 percent of HI cost. The Trustees project that the share of HI cost that can be financed with HI dedicated revenues will decline slowly to 71 percent in 2047, and then rise slowly until it reaches 73 percent in 2087. As it has since 2008, the HI Trust Fund will pay out more in hospital benefits and other expenditures than it receives in income in all years until reserve depletion. The projected HI Trust Fund’s long-term actuarial imbalance is smaller than that of the combined Social Security trust funds under the assumptions employed in this report. The estimated 75-year actuarial deficit in the HI Trust Fund is 1.11 percent of taxable payroll, down from 1.35 percent projected in last year’s report. The HI fund again fails the test of short-range financial adequacy, as its trust fund ratio is already below 100 percent and is expected to decline continuously until reserve depletion in 2026. The fund also continues to fail the long-range test of close actuarial balance. The HI 75-year actuarial imbalance amounts to 29 percent of tax receipts or 23 percent of program cost. The modest improvement in the outlook for HI long-term finances is principally due to: (i) lower projected spending for most HI service categories especially for skilled nursing facilities to reflect lower-thanexpected spending in 2012 and other recent data; (ii) lower projected Medicare Advantage program costs that reflect recent data suggesting that certain provisions of the Affordable Care Act will reduce growth in these costs by more than was previously projected; and (iii) a refinement in projection methods that reduces assumed per beneficiary cost growth during the transition period between the short-range projections and the long-range projections. Partially offsetting these favorable changes to the projections are somewhat lower projected levels of tax income that reflect lower-than-expected tax income in 2012. The Trustees project that Part B of Supplementary Medical Insurance (SMI), which pays doctors’ bills and other outpatient expenses, and Part D of SMI, which provides access to prescription drug coverage, will remain adequately financed into the indefinite fu-

ture because current law automatically provides financing each year to meet the next year’s expected costs. However, the aging population and rising health care costs cause SMI projected costs to grow steadily from 2.0 percent of GDP in 2012 to approximately 3.3 percent of GDP in 2035, and then more slowly to 4.0 percent of GDP by 2087. General revenues will finance roughly three quarters of these costs, and premiums paid by beneficiaries almost all of the remaining quarter. SMI also receives a small amount of financing from special payments by States and from fees on manufacturers and importers of brand-name prescription drugs. Projected costs for Part B assume an almost 25percent reduction in Medicare payment rates for physician services will be implemented in 2014 as required by current law, which is highly unlikely. The Trustees project that total Medicare cost (including both HI and SMI expenditures) will grow from approximately 3.6 percent of GDP in 2012 to 5.6 percent of GDP by 2035, and will increase gradually thereafter to about 6.5 percent of GDP by 2087. The drawdown of Social Security and HI Trust Fund reserves and the general revenue transfers into SMI will result in mounting pressure on the Federal budget. In fact, pressure is already evident. For the seventh consecutive year, the Social Security Act requires that the Trustees issue a “Medicare funding warning” because projected non-dedicated sources of revenues primarily general revenues are expected to continue to account for more than 45 percent of Medicare’s outlays in 2013, a threshold breached for the first time in fiscal year 2010. Conclusion Lawmakers should address the financial challenges facing Social Security and Medicare as soon as possible. Taking action sooner rather than later will leave more options and more time available to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time to prepare.

Science not only for men, says Obama World-first dialysis machine W for infants is born

ASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama on Tuesday launched a push to get girls interested in science and technology, warning the country would miss out if it did not attract women to those fields. “There’s so much talent to be tapped if we’re working together,” Obama said at the annual White House Science Fair, where students from elementary to high school present winning projects. “Right now, fewer than one in five bachelor’s degrees in engineering or computer science are earned by women. Fewer than three in 10 workers in science and engineering are women,” the president said.

“That means we’ve got half the field -- or half our team we’re not even putting on the field. We’ve got to change those numbers.” He called science, technology, engineering and math the “fields of the future, where the good jobs are going to be,” adding: “I want America to be home for those jobs.” Obama enthusiastically focused on each display for about an hour, hailing the students’

hurricanes.

One 18-year-old girl researched the genetics behind a rare form of liver cancer from which she suffers herself; a 12-year-old boy invented better sand bags used to shore up vulnerable homes in floods and

A group of elementary school girls used Lego bricks to show off their design for a so-called “flood-proof” bridge. “We’re blessed to live in a country filled with bright, eager young people who love sci-

ence, love tinkering, love making things, who have the ability to see old problems and grand challenges with fresh eyes,” Obama said. “And those of us who are grown-ups have an obligation to help them reach their full potential, just as others helped us.”

ARIS - The world’s first miniaturised kidney dialysis machine has saved the lives of eight babies in nine months, the Italian scientists who raised the money to build it said on Friday.

Ronco told AFP. “This baby could not be treated with any other treatment. When the baby was discharged from hospital we really had the impression that we had done something very good.”

Until now, babies with kidney failure were treated with machines built for adults, with smaller filters and other imprecise adaptations that tend to withdraw too much or too little of the waste fluid building up in the body.

The girl underwent 25 days of dialysis and was sent home after 50 days with her organ function restored.

“Incredible but true,” said Claudio Ronco from the San Bortolo Hospital’s renal research institute in Vicenza. “It’s like using a tool for a car to fix a watch.”

Nine other babies have since been treated in Europe, of whom seven survived, said Ronco. This was an “incredible” percentage given the historical mortality rate of up to 90 percent, he explained.

How to control your Facebook privacy

Yet companies have been loath to invest in baby-targeted machines as they are not profitable enough, he added.

“This technology has the potential to revolutionise the treatment of infants with acute kidney injury,” said a press statement from The Lancet medical journal, which published the study.

The social network has changed a key setting to ensure your updates aren’t shared with the wrong people. What else can Facebook users do?

“The number of neonates (infants) around the world that suffer from this disorder is very small and therefore there is no point for a company to invest in technology.”

It can be used on newborns and children up to 10 kilogrammes, can handle smaller volumes of fluid much more accurately, and allows the use of a much smaller catheter.

So Ronco and colleagues launched a fundraising programme, hosting sports games and concerts and collecting some 300,000 euros ($410,000) to build a prototype.

About 18 percent of infants with low birthweight and about 20 percent of children admitted to intensive care are estimated to suffer from acute kidney injury, according to the statement.

This attracted help from two Italian manufacturers, and so the child-friendly machine dubbed CARPEDIEM (Cardio-Renal Paediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine) was born.

In a comment on the study, Benjamin Laskin of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Bethany Foster from Montreal’s Children’s Hospital said the girl’s survival was “an outcome that would have been less likely just several years ago”.

F

acebook offers several tools and settings through which you can safeguard your privacy. But it’s still up to you to control your own socially networked destiny. On Thursday, Facebook tweaked the default option for new members so that updates are shared only with friends and not with the public. In line with that change, let’s take a tour through Facebook’s basic privacy settings. Tightening these settings can help ensure that you’re as well-hidden as possible on the world’s largest social network. First off, you can change the default audience for all your updates and control each update individually. To do this, log into your Facebook account and click the Privacy Shortcuts icon in the upper right. From the Privacy Shortcuts menu, click the link for “Who can see my Stuff?” Under the setting for “Who can see my future posts?” click the button and select the appropriate default audience for your updates. You can select Public (usually not the best choice), Friends (probably the best option), or Only Me (not much point putting it on Facebook then). You can also choose a custom option if you want to share your updates only with specific lists of Facebook friends. You can then override the de-

fault setting for any individual update. In the update (or What’s on your mind?) field on your Facebook page, simply click the default sharing setting and change it to something else. For example, you may want to set your default audience to friends but share a specific update only with a more limited group of people. Further, you can change the audience for updates you’ve already posted. To do this, again click the Privacy Shortcuts icon in the upper right and click the link for “Who can see my Stuff?” Under the setting for “Where do I review who can see or find things I’ve posted or been tagged in?” click the link to Use Activity Log. Facebook displays a timeline of all the updates you’ve posted, liked, or commented on. Hovering over the small audience icon to the right of the text shows you who can see the update. You can’t control who sees updates from other people, but you can control your own. Simply click the audience icon for one of your own updates and change the selection. For example, you may decide that an embarrassing update should no longer be shared with all your friends but only with a few people. Of course, all of your friends may have already seen this update, but at least you can limit its exposure for the future. Want to see how your timeline looks to other people? Again, click the Privacy Shortcuts icon

in the upper right and click the link for “Who can see my Stuff?” Under the setting for “What do other people see on my timeline?” click the View as link. By default, Facebook shows you what your page looks like to the public. You can change that by clicking the link to View as Specific Person at the top and then typing and selecting the name of one of your Facebook friends. Next, you can determine which types of messages you want to appear in your Facebook inbox. Click the Privacy Shortcuts icon in the upper right and click the link for “Who can contact me?” Under the setting for “Whose messages do I want filtered into my Inbox?” choose either basic or strict filtering. The former allows messages from friends and people you may know, while the latter restricts messages from just your Facebook friends. Under the setting for “Who can send me friend requests?” click the button to choose between Everyone or only Friends of Friends.

tools and settings worth exploring. Click the See More Settings link at the bottom of the Privacy Shortcuts window. A section called “Who can look me up?” controls who can look you up on Facebook using your email address or phone number. The Timeline and Tagging page lets you manage who can post on your timeline and what they can see. And the Blocking page allows you to block specific users and apps on Facebook. Facebook has often been criticized for not caring about users’ privacy. But the site does provide tools to help users control their own privacy. Reviewing and managing these settings is something all Facebook users should do.

The first beneficiary, a girl with multiple organ failure weighing just 2.9 kilogrammes (6.4 pounds), was treated in August last year. “The baby was almost dead,”

“The smile of the baby when she came to visit me three days ago -- that smile was worth 40 years of medicine,” added Ronco.

Facebook eyeing ‘lucrative’ Indian and Pakistani market to boost revenues

Finally, what can you do if someone keeps pestering you on Facebook? Click the link for “How do I stop someone from bothering me?” Type the name or email address of the person you wish to block, and that individual will be unfriended and won’t be able to start conversations with you or see your updates. MUMBAI - Facebook has targeted users from India, Pakistan and China for their outreach towards the next 5 billion users and augmented revenue rates. A study of social media strategy conducted by iStrategy Labs indicates the number of users in Pakistan to be 14.2 million and 102 million in India. The social media network also sees China as a possible attribute for growth in revenue patterns. According to The Express Tribune, Facebook Advertising data also shows China to have just 8,40,000 registered users due to the strict regulations of the country. However, the data also shows that advancement of growth in China would be centralized if Facebook were allowed to function officially in the country. (ANI).

‘Likely’ over 13 deaths from India is world No. 2 on shadow businesses: Study GM ignitions: US regulator

N

EW YORK, May 27, 2014 (AFP) - The US auto safety regulator said Tuesday that probably more than 13 people died in accidents tied to faulty ignitions on cars made by General Motors.

GM has said it knows of 13 fatalities in more than 30 accidents which arose from the ignitions, which could shut off a car’s electrical systems including airbag deployment while the car was operating. The automaker has recalled 2.6 million cars from model years 2003-1011 and was fined a record $35 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this month for hiding the problem for years. Shadow entrepreneurs manage a business that sells legitimate goods and services but they do not register their businesses. (Thinkstock)

I

ndia has emerged as a country with some of the highest number of unregistered businesses in the world, according to a latest UK study that found Indonesia with maximum number of shadow businesses. Researchers at Imperial College Business School in London found that a large number of shadow entrepreneurs are operating in India without registering their businesses with official authorities and eventually hampering economic growth. The team created a league table based on a study of 68 countries and found Indonesia with the highest ratio of 130 shadow economy businesses to every business that is legally registered, followed closely by India at 127. Shadow entrepreneurs are defined as individuals who manage a business that sells legitimate goods and services but they do not register their businesses. This means that they do not pay tax, operating in a shadow economy where business activities are performed outside the reach of government authorities. “Understanding shadow economy entrepreneurship is incredibly important for developing countries because it is a

key factor affecting economic development,” explains Professor Erkko Autio, co-author of the report, which attempts to analyse the number of entrepreneurs operating in the shadow economy for the first time. “We found that government policies could play a big role in helping shadow economy entrepreneurs transition to the formal economy. This is important because shadow economy entrepreneurs are less likely to innovate, accumulate capital and invest in the economy, which hampers economic growth,” he added. In the study, Professior Autio and Dr Kun Fu estimate that business activities conducted by informal entrepreneurs can make up more than 80 per cent of the total economic activity in developing countries and the types of businesses include unlicensed taxicab services, roadside food stalls and small landscaping operations. The researchers suggest that if India improved the quality of its democratic institutions to match that of Malaysia, it could boost its rate of formal economy entrepreneurs by up to 50 per cent, while cutting the rate of entrepreneurs working in the shadow economy by up to a third. This would mean that the government could benefit from

additional revenue from taxes. “The shadow economy results in loss of tax revenue, unfair competition to registered businesses and also poor productivity – factors which ultimately hinder economic development. As these businesses are not registered it takes them beyond the reach of the law and makes shadow economy entrepreneurs vulnerable to corrupt government officials,” the report notes. While the Philippines (126), Pakistan (109) and Egypt (103) make up the top 5 of the league table of shadow businesses, the UK exhibits the lowest rate of shadow entrepreneurship among the 68 countries surveyed, with a ratio of only one shadow economy entrepreneur to some 30 legally registered businesses. The researchers concluded that where proper economic and political frameworks are in place, individuals are more likely to become “formal” entrepreneurs and register their business because doing so enables them to take advantage of laws and regulations that protect their company, such as trademarking legislation. To create their league table, the UK researchers combined data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and the World Bank. (PTI).

GM also faces lawsuits by victims of the accidents which

analysts say could eventually tote up to billions of dollars. The NHTSA said Tuesday it has been working to link the names of the 13 victims on GM’s list to their families.

“They deserve straight answers about what happened to their loved ones,” the agency said. “The final death toll associated with this safety defect is not known to NHTSA, but we believe it’s likely that more than 13 lives were lost.” But it said GM is in a better position to know how many more deaths were involved, based on its information from incident reports and lawsuits. The independent Center for Auto Safety said in a March letter to NHTSA that records

show 303 deaths in accidents in which the airbags did not deploy in Chevrolet Cobalts and Saturn Ions, two of the GM models recalled over the ignition problem. But those deaths could not readily link the airbag non-deployment to the ignition problem. The center added that the toll was likely higher if other models also covered by GM’s ignition recall are included. It criticized the NHTSA for not having earlier investigated the problem. “NHTSA could and should have initiated a defect investigation to determine why airbags were not deploying in Cobalts and Ions in increasing numbers,” it said in the March letter.

Merkel tops Forbes ‘powerful women’ list NEW YORK, May 28, 2014 (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel topped Forbes’s list of the world’s most powerful women for the fourth consecutive year, followed by US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, the magazine said Wednesday. Behind them came Melinda Gates, who co-chairs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with her billionaire philanthropist husband, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and IMF chief Christine Lagarde. Hillary Clinton, former first lady, onetime Secretary of State and possible future US presidential contender, was listed at number six. The annual list includes women in business, media, politics, technology, entertainment, philanthropy and non-profits, billionaires, and finance, a new category for the first time. “As we mark the 10th anniversary of publishing the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list, these impressive women from around the world continue to make a dramatic,

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC 2014), held in Houston’s Reliant Center from 5th - 8th May 2014, is “the world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection.”

Tuesday night was a first for the Netherlands-Belgium reception which had a very nice and welcoming party and later on, the Keppel party which had an attendance of over 800 guests. They outdone themselves again this year with so much extra eye candy food and libations funfare.

This is My 11th year of attending OTC and this year’s offerings were more than spectacular. I managed to make it to nine OTC receptions. Sunday afternoon, the Carlson Wagonit Travel together with Delta, Air France, KLM and Atitalia invitation to the

Monday night, the Samsung OTC had the best food and crowd of Keppel opulence

The next evening, I attended the DSME reception with The Bohemian Singers (Three KoreanTenors) as the entertainment highlight of the evening. The reception was even bigger and better this year and made My way to Voestalpine and their reception was intimate and had elegant parting gifts for guests. And to top off the night was the Morrison Energy party that was the best place to be wherein it was really heaving and a packed

crowd, booze, awesome food, DJ and so many good looking hoochie mamas. The final day held the Munro party and there were laid back with a casual American fare. And last but not least, the SDV penthouse party that was jam packed with party revelers, excellent food and the music was blasting away. This year’s attendance of more than 100,000 was very good for our city and all the supporting businesses. Attendance at the annual Offshore Technology Conference, OTC for energy industries around the world at the Reliant Park, Houston, reached a 46-year high of 108,300; the highest in show history and up 3.3% from last year. It was a fantastic event – I’ll be back again next year! OTC 2015 takes place 4–7 May 2015.

In this situation, the best way to nurture yourself is to nurture others. You will be able to speak tenderly. Sharp words should not be exchanged. Someone, possibly an older relative, could express discontent with how they perceive you are handling your affairs, it’s not polite, but you may be inclined to say, “It’s none of your business”.

You may decide to have less to do with the person who tried put something over on you. You’ll be able to grin and bear it, whatever it turns out to be. At times, you may feel like it’s all work and no rewards. The glitch that occurs may have to do with future plans for travel or just plain having fun. As for that hard work, regard it as money in the bank, because there may be a raise in your future.

A big project at work could keep you working after hours and your mate may not be too pleased at a break in the normal schedule. Perhaps they may not be as adaptable as you are. Smooth things out, try not to talk about money concerns, if possible. Better days are ahead. You are sharp as a tack, but try not to be too sharp. Perhaps someone will return after a long absence.

Though your ambition may be keen, others could be in the same frame of mind as you. If an obvious power play on someone’s part disturbs you, act as if it has nothing to do with you. It doesn’t, really. The problem is that you may have seen it coming, and now that it has come to a head, you find yourself annoyed. Just keep moving steadily along. This person could be on a different job level from you, but that should be no problem for you.

Virgo (P) 23 August to 22 September Make the atmosphere more pleasant for entertaining family and friends. You could experience a special emotional fulfillment from cooperation on the job. You have to let go of something or someone. It will be clear to you, however, that the usefulness or viability of what you give up, has gone. You’ll be in the mood for romance, with spouse, a very special person who is always there for you. No tears or regrets, just be glad that whatever it was is now over. Think before you act.

Pisces (D,CH,Z) 20 Feb to 20 March

You may surprise everyone by becoming a bit of a chatterbox. Try to confine what you say to the work at hand. Not everyone has to know your personal business. You may be called on to supervise some people. If you are not used to being the boss, you could learn much through this experience. One cardinal rule is not to expect of anyone else what you would not expect of yourself. It is a point in your favor if you don’t exaggerate your accomplishments. You tend to get ahead by taking on more responsibility.
