Julia Roberts Julia Roberts, in full Julia Fiona Roberts, (born October 28, 1967, Smyrna, Georgia, U.S.), American actress whose deft performances in varied roles helped make her one of the highest -paid and most-influential actresses in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Although Roberts’s parents briefly ran an actors’ workshop when she was a child, she had no acting experience or formal training when she moved to New York City after high school to pursue a career in show business. She signed with a modeling agency upon her arrival but failed to land any jobs. Her first film role turned up after she was recommended by her older brother, actor Eric Roberts, for a bit part as his onscreen sister in Blood Red (1989), a drama set in the late 1800s; although the film was completed in 1986, its release was delayed for several years. She next made several television appearances before securing her first leading part, in Mystic Pizza (1988).

Roberts’s career took off after she was cast in Steel Magnolias (1989), which featured such veteran actresses as Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Sally Field. Roberts received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her heartrending portrayal of Field’s diabetic daughter. In 1990 she starred in Pretty Woman, an upbeat comedy about a romance between a prostitute and a business tycoon, played by Richard Gere. A huge hit, it made Roberts a household name and earned her a second Academy Award nomination.

Roberts continued to work steadily throughout the 1990s, starring in Flatliners (1990), Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), Something to Talk About (1995), Mary Reilly (1996), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), and Stepmom (1998), for which she also served as executive producer. Her personal life at times overshadowed her professional career, however, as when her highly publicized marriage to singer Lyle Lovett abruptly ended in 1995. In 1999 Roberts starred in two popular romantic comedies, Notting Hill and Runaway Bride, the latter of which again paired her with Gere.

In 2000 Roberts launched her own production company, Shoelace Productions, and that same year she commanded $20 million for her starring role in Erin Brockovich. The film portrayed the real-life story of a law-office clerk who helped the citizens of a California town win a multimillion-dollar settlement against a utility company for health problems caused by the company’s pollution of their drinking water. For her performance, Roberts won an Academy Award for best actress. She later starred opposite Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Matt Damon in the blockbuster comedy Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and its sequel Ocean’s Twelve (2004). She also appeared in the relationship drama Closer (2004).

In 2006 Roberts supplied the voice for the spider Charlotte in the animated film adaptation of E.B. White’s beloved children’s book Charlotte’s Web. That year she made her Broadway debut in Three Days of Rain, earning mixed reviews. Roberts next appeared with Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), a film based on true events surrounding the U.S. government’s involvement in the Afghan resistance to the Soviets in the 1980s. Her subsequent movies included the family drama Fireflies in the Garden (2008); Duplicity (2009), in which she played a corporate spy; and the romantic comedy Valentine’s Day (2010).

After starring in Eat Pray Love (2010), which was adapted from Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir of the same name, Roberts, playing a community-college professor, reteamed with Hanks in Larry Crowne (2011). In Mirror Mirror (2012), a comedic version of the Snow White tale, she inhabited the role of the evil queen. She then crossed swords with Meryl Streep— who played her savagely critical mother—in the family drama August: Osage County (2013), based on the play by Tracy Letts; the role earned Roberts an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. She later assumed the role of a doctor assisting gay men during the early years of the AIDS crisis in New York City in The Normal Heart (2014), a television adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play.

In the feature film Secret in Their Eyes (2015), Roberts portrayed an FBI agent whose daughter is raped and murdered. She then joined the cast of the ensemble comedy Mother’s Day (2016) as a hard-driving businesswoman. In Jodie Foster’s Wall Street thriller Money Monster (2016), her character is the producer of a financial advice show who is taken hostage along with the host (Clooney) and their crew. In 2017 Roberts lent her voice to the animated film Smurfs: The Lost Village and played the mother of a child with a rare facial condition in Wonder. The following year she starred as a therapist working at a facility to help veterans adjust to civilian life in Homecoming, her first television series, and as a mother whose son skips his rehabilitation program to return home for Christmas in Ben Is Back. Throughout her career, Roberts lent her support to numerous charitable organizations, including UNICEF and the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. In order to raise awareness for threatened species of wildlife, she narrated the documentary In the Wild: Orangutans with Julia Roberts (1998), and for Wild Horses of Mongolia (2000) she lived with Mongolian nomads for several weeks; both programs appeared on American television.

The 25 best Julia Roberts films They don’t make movie stars in the vein of Julia Roberts anymore. Back in the day, she could sell seemingly any romantic comedy or light drama just based on her involvement. Even movies that weren’t good! Not that Roberts doesn’t have an impressive filmography. We’ve looked through the many films of America’s Sweetheart – including “America’s Sweethearts” – to find the 25-best movies of Roberts. From blockbusters to Oscar winners, she’s done it all!

“Mystic Pizza” (1988)

Roberts pretty much came out the gate with charm and screen presence. Her first released film was technically a direct-to-video movie called “Firehouse,” but in 1988 she had two movies come out. One of those was “Mystic Pizza,” an ensemble romantic comedy that would set the course of Roberts’ career in many ways.

“Steel Magnolias” (1989) “Steel Magnolias” is what they would have called back in the day a “weepy,” in that it tugs at your heartstrings. It has quite the cast of ladies, with the likes of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, and Shirley MacLaine all involved. That’s a lot of talent, but Roberts does not exactly fade into the background either.

“Pretty Woman” (1990) This is the breakout film for Roberts. Somehow, she and Richard Gere starred in a romantic comedy about a man who hires a prostitute off the street and then they fall in love. It was not a big mistake, though, nor a huge one. People love “Pretty Woman.” Roberts is a big reason why.

“Flatliners” (1990) Speaking of 1990 movies with premises that shouldn’t really work, there’s also “Flatliners” This is an ensemble with some rising stars of the era about medical students putting themselves into near-death experiences in order to try and understand what happens after death. It’s got some stuff in it that might make you roll your eyes, but it has plenty of fans, and they tend not to remake movies that weren’t received at least reasonably well.

“Hook” (1991) If you are a child of the ‘90s, there is a good chance you love “Hook.” If you aren’t, you probably think it’s not very good, and even some ‘90s children lack nostalgia for the Robin Williams film. However, we know if we made a list of Roberts’ best movies and didn’t include “Hook,” we’d have a lot of thirtysomethings mad at us, and we don’t want that. Roberts plays Tinker Bell. Of course, a lot of you already knew that, and you’re too busy chanting “Rufio!” right now anyway.

“The Pelican Brief” (1993) Of all the movies based on John Grisham novels, “The Pelican Brief” probably has the best reputation. That’s partially because it’s directed by Alan J. Pakula, but also because it stars the dynamic duo of Roberts and Denzel Washington. That’s a lot of wattage to lead a film.

“Michael Collins” (1996)

Being based on a key figure in Irish history, “Michael Collins” may have been overlooked by an American audience. On the other hand, in Ireland, it was the secondhighest-grossing film in the country’s history as of 2000, behind only “Titanic.” Liam Neeson stars as Collins, the Irish revolutionary, but Roberts is part of the cast as Kitty Kiernan, a politician, and Collins’ fiancé.

“My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997)

In “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” Roberts plays a woman who is working to sabotage her male friend’s wedding because she wants to be with him. On its face, that’s a premise that could fall flat. How do you get people to enjoy watching a woman trying to ruin a relationship? By having Roberts play her, of course.

“Stepmom” (1998) “Stepmom” was Roberts’ first time working as an executive producer on a film, but in addition to that, she’s one of the stars as well. It’s a light drama where Roberts plays a woman who marries Ed Harris, who used to be married to Susan Sar-

. The film mostly focuses on Sarandon and Roberts, and they both got a lot of critical praise for their work.

“Notting Hill” (1999) Roberts was one of the biggest movie stars of the ‘90s, maybe the biggest female star, so when “Notting Hill” needed somebody to play a movie star, naturally they hired Roberts. In a bit of meta casting, Roberts plays a star that meets, and falls in love, with a bookstore owner played by Hugh Grant. Of course, he was also a big movie star in the ‘90s, but he could still get away with playing a stammering, nervous everyman, as was his milieu at the time.

“Runaway Bride” (1999) Gere and Roberts are back at it, but this time with a lighter premise than “Pretty Woman.” “Runaway Bride” features Roberts as a woman who becomes a minor celebrity for her penchant to run away from weddings and leaving her husbandsto-be at the altar. Gere writes a story about her, which brings them together, and naturally, he falls in love with Roberts’ Runaway Bride. But can he be the one to keep her?

“Erin Brockovich “(2000) A lot of these films are romantic comedies and light dramas. They made a lot of cash, but they weren’t exactly Oscar bait. Then, “Erin Brockovich” came around. Stephen Soderbergh’s film is definitely serious, though not overly so. As the titular character, Roberts still gets to crack some jokes and show her charismatic side. It all worked, because Roberts one her first – and so far only – acting Oscar.

“America’s Sweethearts” (2001) Here’s another Hollywood movie starring Roberts, but this time she doesn’t play the celebrity. No, she plays the sister and publicist of Gwen Harrison, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. Gwen is an actor, and she’s making a film with her husband Eddie Thomas, played by John Cusack. However, these two – known as “America’s Sweethearts” – are going through an ugly breakup. It’s sort of a silly showbiz film, but with an impressive cast that keeps it working well enough.
