Volkswagen goes Rallying

President始s Report Hi all and we hope you enjoy the VW club Vic August Wagensville Deluxe newsletter. We had a couple of club activities in July with our general meeting VW trivia night and Christmas in July very much enjoyed by all in attendance. We also welcome home our intrepid VW travelers who safely returned home from the VW Germany tour during July. Coming up in August and September we have a number of VW activities including the Dyno Day at Mick's, VW display at Fed Square, Winery Run, Teddy Bears Picnic, and the August general meeting with a VW auction. On the subject of our VW auction, the club was recently given a VW factory workshop manual for the 1952/53 Zwitter Beetle. This manual is in perfect condition and would be highly prized in any VW enthusiasts collection. This item will be offered at the August general meeting auction. VW Club Vic would like to thank xxxx (Lyn to fill in the blanks) and the MG Club of xxxx for this very generous donation. As reported last month we have our AGM coming up in September. Nomination forms are included in this months newsletter. ( note: check this with the committee on Thursday ) We are keen for new blood on the committee so please talk to any one on the current committee if there is a position that is of interest to you. Look forward to seeing you at the August general meeting. Bring your dollars for the auction.

Volkswagen is stepping into the World Rally Championship arena up against Citroen and Ford with a Polo GTi-based car. But it won't be next year. We will have to wait until the 2013 season to see another (highly competitive) make in the premium A1 class of WRC. VW last week unveiled the concept of the Polo R WRC, the car with which it will compete from 2013 onwards. With "the hottest Polo of all time" VW is looking forward to this new challenge and is working on the project with the same passion with which it won the Dakar Rally in the past three years. VW will leverage its involvement in the Dakar for its WRC campaign. The race car will have a 230kW, 1.6-litre, TSI engine and four-wheel drive based on the Polo. New technical rules have come into effect in the WRC this year. For the first time, engines with a maximum displacement of 1,600 cc, direct injection and turbochargers are prescribed. These new regulations are an ideal fit for Volkswagen's production car philosophy - downsizing, high efficiency and reliability are top priorities. VW will prepare and enter the Polo R WRC as a factory commitment. The Wolfsburg-based squad can build on structures which have been established over the past few years.

Cheers Dean Holden VWCV President

VW Type 3 – Celebrating 50 years! The Volkswagen Club of Victoria needs to mark the milestone of 50 years since the birth of Volkswagenʼs ʻnew carʼ of the 1960s. Despite the massive success of the Beetle though the 1950s, Volkswagen relied on a one-car model range for passenger cars right up until 1961, when it finally took the decision to expand its line-up beyond the Type 1 and Type 2 models. Introduced to West Germany in August 1961, a totally new design for the company was unveiled to the motoring press early that year but the Frankfurt International Motor Show was the showcase forum to display the car to their home country and the worldwide audience.

Here being tested in the rain at Nuremburg

One of the early Press photos released in 1961

The origin of the car dates back to 1959 when the first prototypes were developed for testing. The company was investing Hundreds of Millions Duetch Marks to ensure the future of making cars resulting in the lifting of production by the end of 1960 from 3000 to 4000 cars a day. The Type 3 was always calculated into the equation and would help Volkswagen keep growing by giving loyal customer a choice of a bigger car to forfil their needs. In May 1961 photos of the car appeared in the magazine Auto Motor und Sport and was quickly picked in Australia by Modern Motor magazine May edition and keenly read by Australian devotees eager to see the car here.

This new car to emerge from its Wolfsburg factory in Germany came in two versions; one was named the 1500 Sedan, also later known as the Type 3 Notchback. Although it was styled like a conventional car, with a large nose and aerodynamic curves, the Type 3 retained VW's established mechanical layout, with an air-cooled flat-four engine mounted adrift of the rear axle and an expanded Beetle floorpan.

The other version was launched as the "VW 1500 Karmann Ghia Coupé" but informally known as "Der Große Karmann" ("the big Karmann") in Germany, the Type 34 Karmann Ghia was a larger, restyled development of the original Type 14 Karmann Ghia based on the Type 3 platform.

4 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc.

The "regular" VW Type 3 1500 convertible was also displayed but never made production over fears of torsion strength. It sounds like the company was not prepared to take a risk with convertible and after a lot of testing, abandoned the project. Only a few were built, one of which is on display at the VW museum in Germany.

The Variant or Squareback was available in Europe from February 1962 an soon became very popular with customers looking for more load carrying capacity and versatility. With the back seat folded down the car could hold a massive load (for those days!) and proved very popular with families that needed to carry a more a lot including the family pet! The advantages of having a front boot was that it is private and secure with the added bonus of being able to distribute the load between the two axles was highlighted as a real plus for the car.

In 1965, VW added the Fastback (1600TL) to the 1966 model year line up and the new 1600cc engine became available for the existing models The engine was increased in size to l,584cc in 1965 and the car became known as the VW 1600TL, while a conventional two-door saloon was also introduced. It never achieved the sales success of the Beetle, but over 2 million were made over a 12-year period. The car had luggage space in the front and rear, the latter alongside the engine.

Notable landmarks in Type 3 production include a major facelift for the 1970 models and an option for a fully automatic transmission beginning in the 1968 model year. Perhaps the most important impact that the Type 3 had on the development of the automobile was the introduction of electronic fuel injection in the '68s. While fuel injection certainly existed before this date, it had never before appeared on a mass-produced "economy" car. VW ended production of the Type 3 with the 1973 model year. Total Type 3 production is over the 2 million mark, but it's difficult to get accurate total counts.

This is the first in the series of a number of major articles on the Type 3. We will be preparing another major article to celebrate 50 years of the Type 3 in Australia. If you have any information that could contribute to this next article please send it to or contact Chris Scane or Lloyd Davies c/o the club web site.

VW Touran! You mean VW Touareg??? NO !!! (-_-;) Touran!!! Yes, A Volkswagen Cross Touran, not VW Touareg The Volkswagen Touran is a compact MPV based on a vertically-stretched fifth generation Volkswagen Golf Mk5, and sold in Europe and other select markets. It was launched in 2003 to fill a gap in Volkswagen's model lineup, the Sharan large MPV. The vehicle was originally delivered in five- or seven-seat versions, but the five seat version is no longer available in some market. It can be considered an extended version of the Golf Plus, since their front ends are similar in size, while the Touran's rear overhang is 200 mm (7.87 in) longer (and therefore a seven-seater, while the Golf Plus is a five-seater). The name 'Touran' derives from the combination of 'Tour' and 'Sharan', the bigger MPV by VW. Volkswagen has gone the whole hog with the Cross Touran. Even a complete a outsider can see immediately that the Cross Touran has a totally different appearance to everyday Touran. This is all thanks to the all the extras: an adapted grille, roof rails, matte jet black bodywork, large bumpers, rear lights simmering behind smoked glass and the necessary chrome highlights. In its standard format, the Cross Touran has extraordinarily amazing Funplay 17-inch alloys. The rear tyres are a bit wider than the front tyres, which gives the car a sportier feeling. I thought it might be worth sharing this One Only private imported Volkswagen Cross Touran which we never have in the Australia market. This vehicle was originally purchased in Auckland, New Zealand from Giltrap Prestige in 2009 as a used vehicle which the odometer showed less than 2,000

6 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc.

kms, tagged at approximate NZD 47,000 which the new ones tagged at approximate NZD 52,000. This VW Cross Touran was brought into Melbourne, Australia this year April from New Zealand by Eric Lee, and was registered on the road in July 2011. Eric and his family originally was shopping for a VW Polo. After having a chat with the salesman, looking at the 2 kids the salesman recommended Eric this VW Cross Touran. Eric bought this VW Cross Touran as his familyʼs 2nd car also for weekend use.

Volkswagen Cross Touran The only technical adaptation that has been made to convert the Touran into the Cross Touran is its raised chassis (15mm). The increased ground clearance functions well in avoiding high pavement edges. This VW is powered by a 2.0 TDI ( 103kw /138hp @ 4,000rpm and 320 Nm of torque @ 1750 -2500 rpm ) which VW has been using in many of its cars. Mated with the engine is a 6 speed DSG transmission. This particular Cross Touran comes with an option of Park Assist. One thing that surprise me is the Park Assist actually works well and comes in handy for Ericʼs wife, Josephine when she needs to do side parking in a tight parking spot.ParkAssist parallel parks the car for the driver. First, ParkAssist uses sensors up to 30 km/h to determine whether the Touran will fit in the parallel parking position. Then the driver lets go of the steering wheel, selects Reverse on the transmission, then presses the accelerator and brakes accordingly and lets ParkAssist steer it into the final parking position. The reason that Eric imported this VW all the way from New Zealand is because he feels that the Cross Touran is a versatile MPV and he couldnʼt find any better replacement. Here comes my question, what about a VW Caddy? Answer is the

Rear seats and second rear seats can be fold up and setup in just few minutes.

Caddy looks like a working van, whereas the Touran looks more like a family car which I agreed. This 7 seater Cross Touran is convenient for him in both family and work purpose. “ When going to church during weekend, instead of driving 2 cars, I can fit my family and my parents/in-laws and still had an extra space.” said Eric. However when it comes to work, as a Sales and Marketing Manager, Eric often has to travel to promotional events and this Cross Touran can be use to transport more stuffs. The rear seats can be totally removed from the vehicle in seconds and the second rear seat actually folds down flat with the floor. “ The Cross Touran drives more like a car instead of van which Josephine feels more comfortable in driving compared to a Toyota Tarago” stated by Eric. Finally, I would like to extend my appreciation towards Eric and his family for the warm hospitality during the interview and also a million thanks for the interview time and the effort of demonstrating how things work in this one off VW Cross Touran in Australia. MELBOURNE CUP EXTRA LONG WEEKEND

VWCV TEDDY BEARS PICNIC & BBQ 4th Sept (Sunday) 2011 Here is the chance that VWCV teddies have been waiting for all year ! An opportunity to go for a scenic drive with your owner in his or her beloved VW up through some of the most picturesque country in Victoria. Both you and your owner are guaranteed to have a very enjoyable day in the company of other happy teddies, their owners and their trustworthy VWs. This drive will take us through Lilydale, Healesville, up and over the Black Spur, then through Narbethong (and past the hotel where, I am told, Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner nearly had a naughty weekend in the 1959 movie On The Beach), on to Buxton, Taggerty and then to Alexandra. This year we have been invited to have morning tea at the Alexandra property of one of our club members, Ted Jones. Ted has a fine collection of automobiles and trucks for us to look over. At his property we will also meet up with members of the Murrindindi Historical Vehicle Register who will be joining us for the remainder of the day. After morning tea we will cruise, as a group, on to Eildon for either a BBQ or picnic lunch (your owners choice) and some teddy bear activities. A joint car show will be arranged on site at our lunch destination. DonĘźt forget to BYO honey. We will meet at the car park of the Croydon Hotel, (Melway reference 50 E2) at 8am for a 8.15am am sharp departure. If you are late you will have to catch us on the road. If you and your owner intend to come along please make sure that someone calls John or Jan Stevens on 9890 2548AH before 28 August 2011 to book in.

29th Oct (Sat) - 1st Nov (Tues) 2011 Hello fellow VWCV members This year the club has decided to visit the stunning region around Bright in Northern Victoria over this holiday extra long weekend. We will meet up at a respectable hour on the Saturday morning and cruise up as a group and the return cruise will depart Bright around mid-day on Melbourne Cup day. Our accommodation is at the very well situated Bright Holiday Park that is set on 25 acres of parkland only 5 minutes stroll from the town centre and its bars, restaurants and cafes. We have temporarily reserved 10 powered camping sites at the holiday park that will be held for the VWCV until no later than 31 August 2011. As Bright is a premium holiday destination, and is always booked out well in advance, it is important that if you decide to come on this adventure you must contact the park on 5755 1141, tell them you are with the VW club, and book one of the 10 sites no later than 31 August 2011. At this park the cabins are already booked out so if you want other forms of accommodation in Bright you will need to make your own enquiries, perhaps through Bright Visitors Centre, on 1300 551 117. There are heaps of holiday attractions in this area and the itinerary for this four day adventure is still currently being settled by the cruise organisers. We are looking at many options including gourmet food tours, wineries (including Brown Brothers), a cruise to either Mt Buffalo or Mt Beauty, hiring out a go-kart venue and a number of other terrific options. If you book in for this adventure, either at the Bright Holiday Park by 31 August 2011 or elsewhere in the area, please let us know as soon as possible. We will be compiling a list of attendees and will be communicating with them by email once the trip details are settled.

Regards. Thanks. John Goodison - 9464 0366BH / John Stevens – 9890 2548AH Simon Stevens TB

Automechanika Odyssey continued ….. This is the second instalment about the trip to Germany made by Lloyd and Peter Davies in August/September 2010. From Wolfsburg to Berlin: On the Sunday, we drove the 200+kms to Berlin. Berlin is one of my favourite cities. I love its place in history and the many historical sites still remaining after severe bombing during WW2. Before we left Australia, Peter had looked up several websites to research something we were interested in but had not done before – the Berlin Underground Society Tours. These tours include WW2 public underground bomb shelters built into the cityʼs U-Bahn system, the one remaining massive flak tower and a cold war nuclear fallout shelter. As with this whole trip, we had booked our accommodation through a website called Expedia, which we find very handy for finding and prebooking accommodation. In Berlin, we stayed near the Kurfurstendam, in the Turkish district, which we booked because of its proximity to both UBahn and S-Bahn stations, and importantly, we could park the car nearby for free. The following day we did our first ʻBerlin Underworldʼ tour. This took us to the Gesundbrunnen U-Bahn Station where we met our tour group and guide and were taken through an innocent-looking green door in a stairwell. This led to an authentic public air-raid shelter bunker, more or less as it had been during WW2, including rows of communal toilet bowls and toxic phosphorus paint on the walls, which provided lighting if the power failed. We were taken through a vast labyrinth of corridors and rooms. There were also genuine artifacts from the times, including a handcranked ventilation system that required two people to operate, usually women. Next day we wandered down Unter den Linden towards Alexanderplatz. Being the car nuts we are, we decided to drop in on a rather humble looking car parts shop. Inside this store was a Safeway-sized car parts outlet with real parts. For example, there was a fifty metre wall of Bilstein shock absorbers, to suit most German makes; and a Hazet tool section including specialty items. This was not like our stores which usually only stock polishes, paints and seat-covers. I kept spotting parts that we keep in stock for our repairs and mostly brands we use. Amongst the stock we saw Golf 3 front guards, bumpers and bonnets for roughly fifty euro per item. There was also a large wall of very European-style wheels, not like a lot of the rubbish available here. Those lucky Germans! Later that afternoon we caught the U-Bahn to Ka Da We, the famous department store, which I always visit to see the model car section and to get my fix of unusual VW model cars.

The following day we did another underground tour, this time to the famed German anti-aircraft flak towers. These were monolithic structures built by Hitler and Speer to house anti-aircraft guns. There were three towers built in Berlin, one at Zoological Gardens, one at Friedrichshain, and the one we visited, which was at Humboldthain. It was thrity-six metres high and approximately seventy metres in length and width. The walls were three metres thick and the ceiling six metres thick. As well as artillery platforms, they were designed as civilian air-raid shelters. After the war, the Allies decreed that the towers should be destroyed, but this proved to be extremely difficult. The best they could do was to split one of them in half with explosives; and in the one we visited, which was in the French sector, the explosives had caused one side and the ceiling to collapse. With the demolition efforts, the French had to be very careful not to destroy the Russian railway line, which ran nearby. Subsequently, it was decided to cover it with rubble from the war and it became a small hill, which is now covered in trees in a beautiful park with only the very top part exposed. A few years ago, these were opened for organized tours, because curious members of the public would often break into them, and there being no lighting, would often walk down the spiral staircases in the dark and would fall to their deaths as the staircases would come to an abrupt end as a result of demolition efforts. The final underground tour we did took us to a station called Pankkow which was designed to be a nuclear air raid shelter in the East. The idea was, during a nuclear attack, trains would occupy both platforms and four motorized heavy steel doors would seal the area. The trains were used for extra accommodation, and a cleverly disguised secret door would open allowing a specified number of people to enter the true nuclear shelter. When that number was reached, the door would close automatically – the design was such that no one could be crushed. It surprises me that either side would have considered unleashing atomic weapons on Berlin as inevitably, both sides would suffer significant casualties. There certainly were not enough nuclear shelters to hold more than a few thousand people. Before continuing on to Ingolstadt, we visited a few VW and Audi dealerships and the German National Museum on Unter den Linden where Hitlerʼs desk, designed by Albert Speer for the Chancellory, was amongst the displays, also a model of the gigantic dome planned for Hitlerʼs Germania, which was what Berlin was to become. Also, we walked around the large Sunday flea market near Spandau which is always worth a trawl for that odd treasure. And so to Ingolstadt …. Words & Photos by Lloyd Davies

Melbourne International Motorshow 2011 The Volkswagen & Audi stands at the Australian International Motor Show held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre 1-10 July were very impressive. The combined VW and Audi display was bigger than Toyota and Nissan stands the VW display clearly out shone the Subaru (the next highest selling brand in Australia…a least my thoughts only). The stand out car for VW was the Scirocco R in brilliant Viper Green which stood out impressively on the rotating display. With a direct injection turbo 2l producing 188kW @ 6000 rpm & 330 Nm @ 2400-3200rpm, there is plenty of go with the show but you have to wait until 2012 to buy one!. Another strong performer there was the Golf R, this one in brilliant Rising Blue metallic paint, DSG transmission, 19”Talladega Alloy wheels and also Sat Nav & Sunroof pushed the drive away price to $69,340 - $12,682 above the RRP and you still have to wait 6 months(& GTI) to get one!. It has 2.0 turbo producing same figures as the Scirocco. A red Golf GTI

and Polo GTI in Candy White were good performance support for the top liners. VW also had a few other models including Jettas, the new Passat and Vans but the only New Beetle was the Wiggles car so it looks like they are not pushing the Beetle until the (New) New Beetle arrives in Australia. The Golf Blue Motion environmental car boasted a mere 77kW on 1.6l TDI but claimed it could drive from Melbourne to Byron Bay (1447 km) on one tank! I also spent some time at the Audi display – the A5 Sportback V6 3.0 TDI Quattro with 176 kW in Ibis White and A4 Sedan 1.8 T in Silver and cream leather trim were both great cars. We all have to wait 2 years for the next Motor Show in Melbourne but I will leave more time then to give you a better report! Chris Scane VWCV Historian
