B
EFORE WE CAN ALL BLINK IT IS DECEMBER AND OUR VWCV YEAR FINISHED WITH THE CHRISTMAS PARTY AT LLOYD’S MANCAVE IN ELTHAM.
All of us on the committee look forward to catching up with you at our last event for the calendar year. But it gives us all time to reflect on the past year and what a great time was had by all the members at the club events. There were so many great events that were organised for us it is hard to single out any particular moments, but the highlights for me were the Fastback Fiesta and the big one last month – 2016 Day of the Volkswagen!
club members gathered outside the Croydon Hotel. We even had a small group of VWCV members not going on the event to see us off on this lovely cruise through the hills north of Healesville. With our destination achieved we all lined up just outside Toolangi for a chance to have a yak and have a photo shoot of the Fastbacks and other VWs lined up to mark the occasion! A quick trip to the local pub and line up the Fastbacks again in the glorious sunshine was a fitting end to the cruise and a great way to drag in some admiring comments from the other visitors to the pub on this bright Sunday morning. Finally a hearty meal was enjoyed by all, washed down with some chosen liquids before we fired up the Fastbacks and headed back to Melbourne hoping we could do it all again soon.
SOME OF THE SMALL STORIES FROM THIS EVENT ARE OFTEN MISSED SO I THOUGHT TWO OF THEM ARE WORTH RECORDING HERE. The big attraction of Day of the Volkswagen is the great collection of Volkswagens from our marques history but the bonus at this event is meeting the wonderful owners of the cars we all love. I had a great chat to a couple from Shepparton who brought down a wonderful red late model Fastback. They had a slow trip down the highway but I am glad they made it. An enthusiastic owner of a Horizon Blue Oval window Beetle, just like mine, approached me in the VIP area and told me he admired my car. I in turn, told him how I admired a similar car in the general car (and photographed it)
only to be told it was his. We hope to get the cars together soon for a photo shoot! Finally we hope to bring you more stories from Victoria BC in Canada, next year. Our Canadian cousins are really enjoying our stories on the other side of the Pacific and I hope to bring you more from the land of the Maple Leaf in 2017. Please take care on the roads during this festive season and if I didn't catch you at Lloyd’s, I look forward to meeting you again at ‘Seaworks’ in Williamstown about late January next year! Cheers,
CHRIS SCANE, SECRETARY, VWCV
FOR SALE: 1965 RHD CONVERTIBLE. £14,995 Rob Amos of pre67vw.com and I are selling this 1965 VW to fund the restoration of the 1950 cab I acquired from Egypt in 2011. Sloping headlight convertible VWs are getting very rare and this 1965 is model is an extremely useable and easy to maintain model. If this car is of interest please to you, do not hesitate to contact me by email: yanrami@yahoo.com Many thanks, Yan Rami (The Hebmuller Registry)
AS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 3 FASTBACK IN AUSTRALIA APPROACHED, some way of marking this milestone was researched. The opportunity to get as many Fastbacks in the Victorian scene was too tempting to miss. With a bit of publicity in ‘Wagensville News’ and a lot of encouragement for the VWCV committee, the decision to organise my first club event in 33 years was easy to make. It did not take long and 17th April was on us with a troupe of enthusiastic

OKRASA MODIFIED ENGINES
Following our very successful Day of the Volkswagen to celebrate 60 years of Performance VWs and highlighting Okrasa engine performance, I thought you all would like to know what this acronym means.
the Okrasa was 46@4200rpms. The Okrasa kit was a nice way back in the 50's to make your VW the performance everyone desired in their car. The price of these kits are still pricy today, considering prices on eBay have risen as high as US$5000+ for an Okrasa motor.
OETTINGER KRAFTFAHRTECHNISCHE SPEZIAL ANSTALT
There were two Okrasa kits available, the TS-1200 and the TS-1300/30. The TS-1200 consisted of a pair of Okrasa high compression twin-port cylinder heads with twin port manifolds (VW only offered single port heads at that time), dual Solex 32PBIC carbs as used on early Porsche 356s, and carb linkages, balance pipes etc. Optional extras included a Fram oil filter which could be mounted on the fan housing and Okrasa's own oil cooler which consisted of some coiled copper tubing which sat behind the fanhousing thereby being cooled by the air being sucked in. The new heads offered a compression ratio boost from 6.6 to 7.5:1.
This was the name of the company founded by Gerhard Oettinger in 1951. The company specialised in performance parts for the VW engine and soon some of the VW based coachbuilders such as Dannenhauer & Stauss and Rometsch were using Okrasa engines in their sports cars. Okrasa engine have even been installed in early VW Buses to improve performance. Oettinger then progressed through the decades and secured this name as a performance icon in Europe of Volkswagen cars, especially the Golf GTI and R versions. GERHARD OETTINGER (1920-1997) He played a leading role in the development of very efficient high performance engines. The engineering graduate and worldwide oldest VW tuner was regarded as a ‘Hero of Progress’ of his age and a genial engine designer of the post war period, for whom no (technical) hurdle appeared insurmountable. All around the world his Okrasa “TS” and “TSV” twin

carburettor kits gave leisurely Beetles/Bugs sprint talent. His capacity increases for Audi, Mercedes Benz and VW were legendary. He designed the worldwide first 16 valve engine for a volume vehicle (Golf), the first 5 valve (Corrado) and the first six cylinder for the VW Bus. European VW enthusiasts enjoyed punting down the Autobahn in the left lane in an Okrasa split rear and oval windows Beetle in post war Germany, as the prosperity was just emerging. In the 1970’s in an incredibly quick Oettinger Golf 2000 16/E, in the 1980’s was underway in a powerful Oettinger Baby-Benz or today in a just as attractive as potent Oettinger Golf GTI with 290 HP. Oettinger claims all these exceed the original version in all areas of performance – since over 50 years it is their superiority of the developments which also directly transfer itself to the driver. Simply, the Okrasa motor was the race car edition for its day. The Okrasa motor had a compression ratio of 7.50, which was much greater than the standard VW compression. Road and track magazine of the time, stated that the Okrasa motor could push a VW as fast as 87 mph, compared to 76mph in a stock one. The price for an Okrasa kit was US$250.00 in 1956 from EMPI, which was a bundle. The data also shows the acceleration from 0-60 increased by three seconds. Horsepower on a stock VW is at 36@3700rpms, while
The TSV-1300/30 Kit for the Okrasa engine was much more complete, it came with the same parts as the TS-1200 but also included a 69.5mm chrome-moly crank which gave a capacity of 1295cc - the stock stroke at that time being 64 mm. The crank was also '8 doweled' to the flywheel, an upgrade still used in today’s performance flat 4's. The inlet manifolds were fabricated from steel and then chrome-plated with a small outlet on each for a balance pipe running between the two. The carbs were Solex 32mm and were fitted with Knecht air-filters. In 1956, Martin Herzog started importing the Okrasa kits into the US for the American VW Parts company EMPI and they advertised that it would cut the 0-60 time by 12 seconds. They also stated that it increased the HP from 36 to around 48 with "No sign of overheating reported, even in desert". These VWs were also starting to come into the USA, EMPI came out with a kit, which they called "OKRASA". This kit was to beef up the engine a bit, with dual carbs, and special cylinder heads, and pistons. This was a brief introduction to the OKRASA engine and performance improvements from the engineering applications designed in the 1950s. If you would like to hear more about these interesting engines or could send me some more information about their use in Australia, please contact me so we can share it with the rest of the club. Yours into Performance VWs (when I can afford it)
CHRIS SCANE

MICHAEL CLARK WAS THE CLUB PRESIDENT, Mark Zellner was Vice President, Bill Malkoutzis was Secretary, Bruce Woodward was Treasurer, Mark Zellner was Group 5 Delegate/ Competition Secretary and Neil Tattersall was Editor; and the committee was in gear after the election. This is a fairly light edition of Wagensville News but did include the basic info for all VWCV members. The VWCV events for early 1988 included a General Meeting at the Light Car Club on the 21st January and an Australia Day Long Weekend trip to Deniliquin via Echuca on the Saturday. Then the VWCV contingent was required to support a VWCV member at a local Iron Man event on the Sunday morning and a VWCV Treasure Hunt in the afternoon. This was followed on the Monday with a Khana-Cross with the ‘local boys’.

IN THIS YEARS ‘CORNER’, WE HAVE SOME MORE INTERESTING TALES FROM OUR CLUB NEWSLETTER, ‘WAGENSVILLE NEWS’ AND OTHER VOLKSWAGEN PUBLICATIONS OF THAT TIME. This month we are looking at a more recent issue of the ‘News’, a middle history edition and what was happening 50 years ago to give you another window from VWCV scene. I hope you enjoy these and please feel to contact me if you can help in developing the documentation our history.
MICHAEL CRONIN WAS THE CLUB PRESIDENT, Dean Holden was Vice President and Andrew Ermel was Secretary, some of a familiar crew indeed! Tony Albers was the Editor and had recently taken over the editorial responsibilities for the ‘News’. The highlights of December were the results of VWCV Day of the Volkswagen at Cranbourne Racecourse and the details of the final General Meeting of the year incorporating a Tupperware Party.
DEC
2006
The coming events for the new year looked great as they always do at summer-time of year with next VWCV events being the Australia Day Long Weekend in January organized by John Stevens followed by the Picnic at Hanging Rock and cruise mid February and finishing off at the end of February with a Barwon Heads Safari (a John Stevens event) to soak up the last of the summer sun with the Kombi and surfboards in tow!

Wagensville News
THE ‘NEWS’ CARRIED ARTICLES ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE KARMANN GHIA and the details about the Car of the Show at DOTVW that year, Nick Stellatos’ early KG. This edition also had a DOTVW Motorsport report from Chris Antonello thanking the 12 members and enthusiasts who contributed to the VWCV Motorsport Display at ‘Day of’. Interestingly, Chris A and Cheryl Ermel did a great job of the Air Cooled judging at the 2016 DOTVW, demonstrating how the enthusiasm for this club, yet again continues through these dedicated long term VWCV members. In the ‘For Sale’ section there was a lovely 1979 White Karmann Beetle Cabriolet that I have had my eye on for many years. The then owner explains; 1600cc fuel injection, RHD, built for California and converted in Australia, Black Hood and vinyl interior. Stripped back to bare metal 6 years ago, $40,000 spent. Recon engine, new hood, suspension bumpers, driven daily until this year and completely reliable, great condition with no rust. 3 Dogs and arrival of a baby sadly forces sale... GOOD HOME ONLY! VIN 1592033882 - $19,000. Does anyone know where this car has gone? I have not seen it for more than 10 years maybe there is detective work to be done?
This issue of the ‘News’ carried the reports on past events including from the new President, Michael Clark and the new (recycled) Editor, Neil Tattersall. On a contentious note, the financial statement to mid-November that year revealed some alarming information. Total operating credit for the club in 1986-7, including membership fees was less than $700! Add the considerable then (meagre now), $2725 profit from Day of the Volkswagen 1987 which left a grand total of $3167.18 in the bank. There were darker days in VWCV history to come that would make this financial situation look very secure!
PAT WHITAKER WAS THE PRESIDENT, IAN WILLIAMS WAS VICE PRESIDENT, Geoff Worthington was Secretary, L Mason was Treasurer, Competition Secretary was Dave Evans (later to be President and previous VWCV Historian) with the Editor’s position again filled by Pat Whitaker. The cover picture was supplied by J Geddes from Volkswagen Australia (looks like hand painted – also done up to the 1980s) to compliment the new look magazine. Pat gave an informed report on all things VWCV to fill in what was happening at the end of 1966. The events for the New Year in January included a General meeting at Volkswagen Australasia, Clayton, this time at Plant 2. This meeting was followed by a Bowling night at the Hawthorn Bowl, a Beach day at Elwood and BBQ at Roger Backway‘s home not far from the beach and an Interstate Motorkhana at Young, in NSW for the last weekend of that month.
DEC
1966
Again the big format ‘News’ reported on the Bowling Night in the first week of the month, a report on the ‘Gold Prospecting Day’ at an undisclosed location. The VWCV members toiled through the day with little to show for it but from the report a good time was enjoyed by all! It also inspired a poetry piece on the Diggings’ and it sounds like gold fever was in the air but little or none found. Interestingly, there was another call for old editions (in 1966) of Wagensville News from Roger Backway. Magazines and Newsletters dating back to May 1959 (not aware there was any) and any VWCV literature printed after November 1961 (have a copy of May 1962) was required. It is great to see the initiatives of our committee 50 years ago are still being pursued by the current committee, through the Club Historian. The major task for 2017 is to get the collection, now well documented, scanned and archived in multiple locations so our wonderful archive can never be lost. Have a very happy and safe Christmas/New Year and will keenly look forward to seeing you all at the 2016 VWCV Christmas Party at Lloyd’s Mancave or the next VWCV event! Regards,
Chris Scane

A TRULY GREAT AND ICONIC VWCV EVENT AND YES, THIS WAS IN LAST MONTH'S MAG!
KENNETT RIVER FRIDAY 4TH – SUNDAY 6TH MARCH 2017
Lettuce to
the editorS Senator Wayne Lewis
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE WORLD FAMOUS ANNUAL VWCV KENNETT RIVER CAMP OUT IS ON AGAIN.
T
he salubrious Kennett River Holiday Park, 164 kms from Melbourne and right on Victoria’s magnificent Great Ocean Road, is where all the action will occur. The club does not run a group cruise down to the event as most members choose to arrive at different times on the Friday afternoon or evening. We usually get between 20 to 30 sites full of VWs and their owners and friends. The club has made a provisional reservation at the park for a large group of powered campsites for the nights of Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March 2017. If you intend to go please contact the park directly on 1300 664 417 or 5289 0272 and tell them you are with the Volkswagen Club. If you are after cabin accommodation please act now. There may be some special activities organised and on offer over the weekend. We will let you know about these closer to the event.
Excited VWCV members en-route to the 2008 VWCV Kennett River Camp Out. Do I hear banjo's?
The main purpose of this notification is so that you can reserve your camping site well before the Christmas rush and before all the available sites for this weekend are booked. If you leave it to next year you might, at best, end up with an unpowered site away from all the action. This is a truly great and iconic VWCV event and is one that must not be missed. See you there. DAY OF THE SOMETHING Recently I went on a car rally around the streets of Yarra Glen with some members of a Datsun car club. The idea was to accumulate points by asking people for directions to the Yarra Glen showgrounds, a mythical place somewhere in, or near, Yarra Glen. Unfortunately on that day, my Datsun 120Y mechanic was down at the tip trying to source some new rear leaf spring suspension so I had to take my trusty Volkswagen. I must say, I felt a bit silly driving an old Volkswagen to a classy Datsun show but it couldn't be helped.
Now I'm not a fan of some of the fancier Datsuns with independent rear suspension as the shockers take up too much boot space and tend to handle better in the dirt which can be annoying at times. After walking around for two and a half hours desperately trying to find a nice 180B or 240Z, I realised that most of the cars I had seen were Volkswagens. There were old and new Beetles, Type 3's, Kombis, Golfs, Polos, T3 Synchros, Karmann Ghias, Manx's, 914's, and even a Porsche Tractor. There was a guy called Carl who had a Volkswagen Corolla or Cortina or Camaro or something? Corrado? Tarago? A nice car that is highly modified with the engine being moved to the front, making it one of the only front-engined VWs in the world! Anyway, maybe I should have brought my 1973 VW SP2 into the show rather than leave it in the carpark? What was going on? Where were the Datsuns? Hopefully they were not still driving around trying to find the Showgrounds? Surely they had accumulated enough points by now? In the end I gave up trying to find any Datsuns and just looked at some Volkswagens instead. It was probably the worst Datsun show I have been to this year! Later, I couldn't remember where I parked my car, so I caught the bus home the following day. Minister Wayne Lewis
After accumulating many points, I eventually arrived at the Yarra Glen Showgrounds which also seemed to contain a large horse racing track and huge grandstand and stables which I found to be a bit odd. There was a special gate for VIP Showground members or something but I was not one of the lucky ones. There were some very handsome men and women manning the gates though. I drove down into the non-VIP car park and couldn't see any Datsuns. I did see a mint 2009 X-Trail or Nissan Patrol and a schmick 2015 Qashqai or Mazda Tarago fitted with wing mirrors. I went into the show and I paid either $20 or $25, however I can't remember which amount as the website and the facebook page didn't match with the pricing. There were hundreds of cars and I just couldn't wait to see some fantastic old and brand new classic Datsuns.

VWCV | CHARMAIN’S NO 'E' CHALLENGE
TOP TIP | SPRING CLAMP CALAMITY!
CROSS OUT ALL THE LETTERS THAT APPEAR MORE THAN ONCE.
SO WHY DO THEY USE THOSE STUPID SPRING HOSE CLAMPS?
WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THAT, THE LEFT OVER LETTERS, READING LEFT TO RIGHT AND TOP TO BOTTOM, WILL SPELL A LEFTOVER WORD.
Being an old-style Volkswagen mechanic, I'm used to worm drive hose clamps.
THIS PIC IS UNRELATED TO THE ARTICLE ON THIS PAGE (WAYNE LEWIS)
wider, makes for a very snug fit. Most mechanics don't like these spring clamps because they are often in hard to get at places, but if you have the right tools (pictured), they can actually be easier than trying to fit a standard hose clamp. For example, a remotely operated tool incorporating a Bowden cable can get to most awkward places. Also, another contributing factor to extended hose life is the use of moulded plastic coolant fittings. Now these fittings aren't perfect, as they can warp with heat and age, and in extreme cases, can become brittle. But generally, they will last five years or more and at that point they usually only leak around O-rings.
