PRESIDENT RICHARD GRAHAM

ROSSKO Our last general meeting started off a bit differently in August with Rossko Dakin asking if he could have a few minutes at the start to run an “ice breaker”. His intentions was to group people up who normally may not have sat together, and play a short game. This allowed members to interact with, and learn a bit about each other. It was very successful and we may continue this from time to time. This will help newer members who may not know too many people, to feel more comfortable and welcome to our club. It also helps our older members break from their normal groups, even for a few minutes and have some fun. Thanks to Rossko for putting up his hand to run this.

VOLKWERKE TECH DAY

We had great feedback days afterwards from members, going home now with the confidence to adjust and maintain their own brakes. I’m happy to say that there are a few less poor braking VWs around Victoria currently.

ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER BIG MONTH OF EVENTS HAS KEPT THE KEEN INTEREST OF OUR MEMBERS COMING ALONG AND ENJOYING EVERYTHING VOLKSWAGEN.

Lloyd went through the basics in adjusting and rebuilding brakes on a beetle. Many people came along to see just how easy it is to get their VW stopping, just as the factory intended.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR

At the start of August, we had a tech day on brakes at Volkwerke. People got to see these magical things on our cars that stops us bumping into the people in front of us and how they work.

GERMAN AUTO SHOW

O

UR GERMAN AUTO SHOW held on the 28th was a massive success thanks to head organiser Julien Langlet and also Chris Jeffes and Charmain Green. These three worked hard before and on the day to make the first all German Auto Show, run by the VWCV, was better than anyone expected. Held at the Deaf Children’s Australia grounds on St Kilda Road, this provided the show with an excellent venue in the city with the beautiful bluestone building in the background for some great car photo opportunites. We had over 200 plus cars attend from makes such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, NSU, Audi and of course Volkswagen. This was a charity show to support the DCA with all proceeds going to them. If you missed this show you'll be able to see it in a few weeks on the TV show “Classic Restos” hosted by Mark Fletcher. And due to the success of the show it looks like we may run it again at the request of our members, as well as the other car clubs who attended on the day.

And on a last note I would like to thank this years committee on great year of work. Each member has put in an exceptional effort in each of their roles, to bring a better club for every club member I'm sure the next committee will put an even bigger effort in and bring new and fresh ideas. Also we are encouraging members to come along and be assistant committee members. This allows people who are thinking of taking on a committee position but would like to trial it first without having the full responsibility of the position.

I had a great time at the German Auto Show a couple of weeks ago. However, I noticed that there were only German Cars there. Why was that? Surely there are some nice cars from other countries as well? For example, I own an almost brand new (2007) Camry which was in much better condition than some of those old cars at the show, but was asked to park out the front for some reason. Could the VW Club of Victoria please organise an All-Japanese Car Show just for Camry's? I'll definitely go to that one I think. Stan Johnson, West Greensborough, Victoria

We believe this will allow a much more comfortable transition of committee members and take the scariness of being locked into a position by yourself for a year. So even after the AGM this month, you feel you would like to see what's it like running a part of this club, please come see one of us and we can have a chat.

SIGNING OFF!

COFFEE? This month we have the usual coffee meet on the third Saturday of the month. Be great to see some new faces coming along and attending this event. The more cars we get the better the event, and the more fun it is.

AUSGEZEICHNET GERMAN AUTO SHOW THANKS ANDY ELBE FOR THE GREAT PIC!

DEAN BARTON-SMITH

CEO OF DEAF CHILDREN AUSTRALIA AND VW CLUB MEMBER

Deaf Children Australia (DCA) was proud to welcome the German Auto Show to its St Kilda Road grounds on Sunday 28 August.

The event hosted over 220 classic German cars and over 700 community members enjoying the classics. Deaf Children Australia would like to commend the VW Club of Victoria and its members for an exceptional effort which led to such a successful day. DCA contacted the VW Club of Victoria in early 2016 just as the committee was looking for venue options for a German Auto Show, we met and discussed the vision for the show and the rest is history. It was great to see the BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Audi Clubs of Victoria and The Historical German

8

Wagensville News

Vehicle Register Of Australia come on board and fully support the event. DCA were pleased to open its beautiful grounds for such a wonderful community event with a huge positive vibe. As the day went on, the crowd swelled from motoring enthusiasts showing off their toys to include many people - cyclists, children, parents and grandparents – who came in off the street.] They wanted to enjoy the spectacle and the fantastic photo opportunities provided by all these brilliant cars with the backdrop of the gardens and 150 year old bluestone building. The food and coffee vans were under the pump as there was a far bigger crowd than anticipated.

It was lovely to hear some stories from attendees, there was a car entrant came with his grandma who many years before attended the school as a girl. Another great story was that of a group of deaf young adults who came up very excited to Vice President Andrew Ermel when he fired up his drag car. They excitedly signed to him that they were deaf but that they could feel the strong vibrations in their chests! The aim of the show was to 'foster relationships between like minded car clubs and their members and promote German car clubs to the community' and the event certainly demonstrated this. DCA think the event will go from strength to strength in the future and look forward to building on the partnership and collaborating on the German Auto Show again next year - for what DCA hope will become a signature event. A massive thank you to all who attended to make this event such a success.

We want to particularly acknowledge the efforts of Julien Langlet, Chris Jeffes and Richard Graham. Some of the proceeds from each car, and all the gold coin donations from each visitor, are supporting the work of Deaf Children Australia. DCA appreciated the Club’s contribution towards our unfunded programs which support deaf and hard of hearing children. Some may know me as a Club member. I have a lived experience of deafness and can understand the challenges that so many deaf and hard of hearing children and young people face, experiencing communication difficulties and feeling isolated. If you would like to support deaf and hard of hearing children to overcome their barriers and achieve their goals by making a tax deductible donation, please phone (03) 9539 5356 or go to

he day my husband (Jason) told me that he wanted to do up a VW, I was filled with shock and questions. Our family was about to become bigger and the financial uncertainty of what I had said yes too, was worrying. I had always known of his love for VW’s, I remember the first time I went over to his house, there were VW pictures on the walls and he had a photo box of old cars he had done up. Not wanting to squash his childhood dream, we made our way to Ballarat with a car trailer to collect our first VW shell. Looking it over from my eyes, I was in shock.

Wagensville News

What had I agreed to! We brought it home and so began the transformation. Little by little, Jason restored the VW. Some nights he would vanish to spend a few precious hours with her. Most weekends he was tinkering away, even using my dishwasher on occasions to wash car parts. Two and a half years later Jason had the finished product. I am today a very proud wife that Jason was able to achieve his dream. I am even more pleased to say that we can now enjoy family trips in it. MEGAN MARSHALL

MY FIRST CLASSIC VW DRIVE C

an you remember the first time you drove a Classic VW (Classic being any car over 25yrs old of course). For some of you it’s probably a distant memory, but for me it’s quite recent, it was the weekend of the German Car Show!

As someone who is lucky enough to have access to brand new VW’s every day in my day job, the opportunity to drive something outside of a new car warranty just doesn’t present itself. So when Lloyd Davies offered me the keys to one of the cars, a 1979 Mk1 Golf Gls, from his collection, I wasn’t saying no.

Darth Vader's cousin?

Classifieds, here I come!

First impressions upon alighting into the cabin was one of size - it is much smaller than a contemporary Mk7 Golf, not uncomfortably so, just nice and snug, visibility – much improved through the A pillars, due to their narrowness and that you sit on the seat not in the seat like a modern bucket seat. Strangely enough, I could feel that this car was very much the father of my Mk7 in the way the cabin was laid out in a logical and ergonomic manner, and the way the door closed with a solid thud – all very German!

The downsides of my time with this car? Twofold; 1. I had to give it back at the end of the weekend, and 2. It has only stoked my enthusiasm to own a Mk1 Golf of my own!

A big thank you to Lloyd for letting me sample a beautiful Mk1 Golf, the hunt for one of my own begins!

Cheshire Cat So how did it drive compared to a car 37 years its junior? In a word, brilliantly! Despite its age the Golf drove like a dream, and was an absolute hoot that had me grinning like a Cheshire cat. The way in which you drove the car harked back to a time when adaptive dampers were the stuff of dreams. Entering a corner you let the car roll over on to its suspension, let the car lean over and away you go. Initially a little disconcerting, but once you realise that is how the car meant to act, a lot of fun at city speeds.

1970s: Cardies and carbies The carburetted 1.6 occasionally wasn’t a fan of starting first time up or holding a steady idle at times, but once underway was a real gem and had the Golf humming along and coupled to the 4 speed gearbox meant it was a little noisy at 100kph on the ‘ring road but mechanically this was definitely ‘70’s VW engineering at its best. I really could drive this car every day to work and be as comfortable as my current car. The only mechanical reminder that I was driving a near 40 year old Golf, was the braking capabilities, or at times lack of capabilities, even for a car weighing a scant 900kg – nearly 450kg lighter than a Mk7!

VICE EL-PRESIDENTE | REPORT

ANDREW ERMEL end of the day I started up the car and drove it onto the trailer. Mike Cronin as crew chief, chocked the wheels when it was up on the trailer and just for a little show, I gave the engine a couple of revs before I shut it down.

THE YEAR FOR THE CURRENT VWCV COMMITTEE IS DRAWING TO AN END AND WE ARE ABOUT TO ELECT A NEW COMMITTEE FOR THE ENSUING YEAR. This sadly will be my last report as the Vice President and I’ve so much enjoyed my time supporting Richard Graeme, who has done a superb job steering the club in the past twelve months in his capacity as the Club President. We have had a fantastic committee supported by so many great people, who have all contributed to a fantastic year! The club is still in a very fine position both with memberships and being financially sound. We have run some very interesting events and had many great club nights at our new location the Austrian Club. Special mentions must go to Josh Handicott (assistant magazine editor) and Andy Ryan (Editor and magazine designer) who have both done a fantastic job of bringing new ideas and wonderful and interesting reads to the magazine this year. I must say that Andy Ryan® has made his mark with the new look magazine! Keep up the good work guys, I love the magazine.

Some young kids ran over to me as I was climbing out of the car, one of them was tapping repeatedly on his chest and smiling and gesturing towards my drag car. He explained to me that he was deaf and was here with his mates across the ground looking at the car show. He said that he heard me start the car from all the way over the other side of the grounds. He said he felt the vibrations of the engine running through his heart and he communicated that to me. He kept tapping his chest and said that it was cool that he could feel that car in his heart as we loaded it up on the trailer. He also said that it made him very happy to be here at the car show today and that he could hear my car too, it made it special. It made my day that my car was felt by them at the show and gave them a buzz they will remember. It was truly a classic motoring moment and made taking the drag car there all worth it. Congratulations to Julien Langlet, Chris Jeffes and the show crew for a fantastically organised event! Cheers and happy motoring.

SO THAT'S HOW THE BRAKES ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK!

BRENDAN PELL Jordan and Lloyd took us through the various steps involved in inspecting and removing all of the various components that made up the braking system (apart from the Master Cylinder) and explained how each part worked and how it could be inspected for wear and damage. This was all done in a patient and approachable manner and done at a pace where everyone was left with an increased understanding on what was going on.

JORDAN AND LLOYD: THE EXPERTS AT WORK

I

was fortunate to be able to attend the recent Brake Rebuild Tech Day held at Volkeworke, back on the 13th of August. I am a relatively new member, only joining around 18 months ago and this is the first of these sorts of events that I have attended and I just wish that there were more of them. Lloyd, Lyn and Jordan hosted the day at the fantastic Volkeworke workshop in Greensborough and it was an immensely enjoyable and informative day for all of us that were lucky to be there.

RUTH LEARNING ABOUT SPANNERS. AND BRAKES!

22

Wagensville News

Lloyd’s knowledge of Volkswagens and Mechanical Engineering in general is phenomenal and whilst the main focus of the day was to do with brakes, he was more than happy to answer any questions on other topics as they arose. For some in attendance learning how the braking system works and all the components involved was not new to them, but for some of us, it exposed us to a hidden world that was fascinating to explore and learn about. We started the day early (probably not by Lloyd and Jordan’s standards), but for some of us that started from some distance away it was an earlier than welcome start to a Saturday morning. The general interest early in the day was looking over some of the interesting and different cars and models that were in and around the workshop, especially the little military vehicle that was a first for some of us. After a short while the serious business at hand began as we assembled under the donor Beetle up on one of the hoists.

I think the first thing that I learnt was that the whole process needs to be planned, and done in a logical sequence. Also just how important it is to create good working environment and to have the correct tools, parts and consumables at hand to make the project work properly. For those of us used to working in a cluttered garage or shed or even under the carport or out in the driveway, it was pleasure and an eye opener to be able to spend time in a professional workshop and to see and experience first hand how things were done in a proper manner. Everything seemed to go very smoothly, even when it was discovered that some things were unexpected or less than ideal Lloyd took it in his stride and found a solution (it made me realise that there probably isn’t very much to do with Volkswagens that Lloyd hasn’t seen before). It seemed like quite a long process, but I’m sure that this was mainly because such great care was taken in telling and showing us exactly what was going on and under normal circumstances I’m sure they would have completed all of this in a couple of hours. We were given opportunities to be “hands on” in some applications and otherwise stood back and watched how it was supposed to be done. Around lunchtime the impressive Volkeworke barbeque was fired up and various club members did a fantastic job pitching in and cooking up and laying out a wonderful spread (provided by Lyn) and this was much appreciated and enjoyed by all. A quick coffee or a cold drink and we were back into the matter at hand and watched as the whole project was unfolding

THE 'BRAKE' THINGS

with the final result that the donor Beetle was now furnished with new and fully functioning brakes on all four corners of the car. We helped where we could to restore the workshop back to its pristine condition (although I think both Jordan and Lloyd probably put in a bit more of an effort after we all left). After this we were then treated to a bit of a tour around the labyrinth of factories that make up Volkeworke and got to see many of the bits and pieces, treasures and projects that were scattered around the property. Overall this was another extremely enjoyable and informative day put on by the fantastic club that we are members of. I think everyone in attendance would have learnt something, and many of us certainly learnt a lot. We’re probably not about to put Lloyd and his team out of business any time soon, but at least we would feel somewhat confident in inspecting or replacing various components involved in the braking system of our car and for this we are all very grateful. Again a special thanks to Lloyd, Lyn and Jordan who made us all feel very welcome at the workshop and for the patience they displayed in explaining and demonstrating the project throughout the day. Also a big thankyou to the Club in general for putting on such an event, its one thing to be able to own and enjoy a VW of any sort, but it’s another thing altogether to be able to have the skills and the confidence to maintain the car to get the maximum pleasure out of driving it. I for one will certainly be hoping that there are more days like this and look forward to them if they arise.

RICHARD GRAHAM HERBIE GOES UNDER RESTORATION IT’S BEEN A LONG WHILE SINCE WE PUT AN ARTICLE ON A CLUB MEMBER’S CAR IN THE MAGAZINE SO I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO DO IT AGAIN.

seventies. The wide wheels with the white lettering on the sidewalls, the rally light on the bonnet and the flip open gas cap mounted on the side of the car just behind the right side front guard (This was put here for the plot of the story).

xcept this article is not about a completed car, rather this is about a car currently going through the restoration process. Many of you will know me. I’ve been with the club since 1999 and in that time I have owned and driven Herbie the Love Bug replicas. Yes I am the driver who flipped and destroyed his first beetle racing at the Calder Park Thunderdome back in 2002! Anyway let’s skip ahead to now. Back in February 2012 I took my rust ridden Herbie off the road and semi-retired it. I decided then to pull out my 1966 genuine Golde sunroof beetle out of the shed and begin the long process of making him a show stopping restored beetle. I’ve owned this car since 2000 and never registered it. My plans are to create a fully immaculate Herbie goes to Monte Carlo copy. Unlike many Herbie “tributes” out there I want mine to be unmistakably close to the original movie cars as possible. To do this it requires a lot more than just white paint, stripes and numbers! The reason I chose this particular Herbie movie was because the car looked like a real rally car of the

A few years passed and I now I’m going full steam to get this car going and showing! The biggest thing that has happened with this beetle is the conversion from right hand drive (RHD) to left hand drive (LHD). My reasons for doing this is: (1) Herbie was American and hence left hand drive and (2) I’m sick of cluey kids catching me out when I tell them it’s the real Herbie! Converting the pan and suspension to LHD was surprisingly easy. When VW built cars they made things interchangeable so as to not require many different parts and tooling. This worked in my favour! I received a LHD pedal cluster from fellow VW club member Andrew Ermel. The pedal cluster bolts straight up to the existing holes on the tunnel. The only issue was the clutch hook being on the left hand side of the tunnel. This meant the clutch cable tube inside the tunnel, which aims to the right side of the tunnel, was now a problem. So out comes the grinder and a temporary inspection hole was cut.

My 66 was already stripped and separated from the pan. Over the years of owning it I had done bit here and there. I spent some time in a panel beating shop replacing the front and rear sections on the car. It seemed to have been sandwiched between two cars in the past and repaired badly!

Once again VW made the job nice and easy. The end of the clutch cable tube sits in a recess and is held in by a small tack of weld. After unpicking the weld I simply bent the tube to the recess on the opposite side, held it in place and retacked it! It’s that easy!

N

ext I removed the brake line running from the master cylinder to the back of the pan. This will be replaced (50 years old remember) and then installed to the other side as well as the master cylinder. New holes are drilled and a test fitting of the pedals and master cylinder to ensure everything is where it should be.

The only real modification I had to perform in this whole process was to make a plate to stop the pedals falling forward. LHD cars have these but since I didn’t get one when collecting parts, I just made one myself. The rear end also required some work before reassembly. I removed the spring plates to find some very worn and tired rubber torsion bar bushes (These are often forgotten about or ignored in many restorations). These were tossed in the trash straight away and will be replaced with urethane replacements. Since I plan to set the rear of the car up to handle better than ever and feel tighter on the road, changing these is essential. Although, rubber replacements are still quite satisfactory and will bring new life to the rear of your car (stock or modified). Continued next page

Now the clutch cable issue was settled I began working on the front beam. Once again this was very straight forward. Measure the steering dampener bracket from the centre of the beam, cut it off and weld it on the other side, the exact same distance from the centre. SEPTEMBER 2016

HERBIE RESTORATION

A

S MY INTENTIONS LATER DOWN THE ROAD IS TO PUT SOME REAL HP (100 TO 200) IN THE BACK OF HERBIE I NEED TO HAVE THE GEARBOX ABLE TO HANDLE THE POWER AND TORQUE THAT WILL BE PRODUCED.

The gear box itself is a stock box with a modified diff that work similar to a limited slip diff (LSD). I bought this many years ago at one of the VWCV’s Volkswagen only swap meets, off another fellow club member Bill Malkoutzis. Originally built for a formula Vee race car, Bill was kind enough to turn the diff around so as to have the car driving in the right directing. Formula Vee cars have the engine and gearbox facing the other way in their setup so that the engine is in the middle of the car. To help strengthen the gearbox to the chassis I purchased some Rhino gearbox and engine mounts from the USA. These are urethane mounts which are much stronger then rubber and help to hold the gearbox in one place when the engine is trying to get moving quickly. Whilst these Rhino mounts do add a little extra drivetrain noise into the cabin due to the rigidity of urethane, it’s only a slight increase compared to solid metal braces which transmit heaps of noise and vibration and are horrible to drive on the street. Another strengthening application I am installing is a Gene Berg Transmission Mount. These are a wonderful device that does require welding onto the frame horns. A metal mount and plate bolts to the lower 4 studs, (longer studs are included in the kit), on the nose cone of the gearbox. Two metal plates are welded to the horns and a rubber mounts connect these two. The nose cone is held more solidly and no additional noise is transmitted into the cabin of the car.

STAYED TUNED FOR THE NEXT INSTALMENT –

SANDBLASTING AND BODY REPAIR.

WHOSE KEY TAGS ARE THESE? HELP SOLVE THE MYSTERY! THE FACTS WHEN I GOT MY 1967 BEETLE FROM THE PREVIOUS 3RD OR 4TH OWNER, IT CAME WITH A KEY TAG AND VIN NUMBER TAG.

CHRIS SCANE says: "Tally Ho Boys Home has an ominous ring to it as my father threatened to drop me off at this place if I misbehaved. I remember dreading going past it in our oval window beetle and waiting for the somewhat light heated threat to drop me off.” Unfortunately there are no public records from Tally Ho Boys Village as to who the original owner of the tag would be. Chris says: “Often organisations like this had a pool of cars to use for activities and I can see how the tag could be used over and over again”.

THE VIN TAG READS: VW 2110893

THE KEY TAG READS: GYO 951

These key tags were with my 1967 beetle keys but belong to a different model. I would like to reunite the vehicle and the original keys, any help or leads would be great!

THE RESEARCH THE VIN TAG From the rego number and the VIN, we are looking at a pre- 1959 model, our Club Historian, Chris Scane, believes the vehicle could be as early as 1956. The VIN number starts with a 2 for Type 2, so we can safely assume these tags belongs to an early splitty. THE KEY TAG When you look hard enough, you can make out Tally Ho Boys Village on the key tag. A well preserved key tag looks like this one on the left. The Tally Ho Boys Village was an orphanage and youth welfare community from 1903 to 1986, located at the south-western corner of Springvale rd and Burwood Hwy in Burwood East.

REGO SEARCH A search of the VW club of Victoria vehicle database turned out no new lead. Vicroads’ website has registration records from 1983 to now, but this rego showed “no records found” In 2006, the Association of Motoring Clubs inherited Vicroads’ card records after Vicroads computerised in the 1980s. The records go from the 1933 to 1983 however Vicroads suppressed any personal information. AOMC were thinking of waiving the $85 fee for a fellow car enthusiast, but they cannot provide the crucial information, the owner details, as they had been suppressed. For anyone needing a vintage or classic car search, this site summarises what the Association of Motoring Clubs holds http://www.aomc.asn.au/eng&regrecords.htm

CALL FOR HELP! To anyone who has any information or leads on who the past or current owner is for this early VW van, help me reunite the vehicle and original key tags, any info is appreciated. The vehicle may not exist anymore but there’s a chance! JULIEN LANGLET Contact me at webmaster@vwclub.com.au SEPTEMBER 2016
