Hard to believe that we are already into November 2010 and its a less than two months to Christmas. Melbourne Cup weekend came and went, just like the cash we chucked away on non VW horsepower:-) on that special day. And most importantly the 2010 Day of the VW is right around the corner. How time flies. Last month we had big change to the VW Club monthly calendar with moving the general meeting date from the 4th Tuesday to the 3rd Thursday of the month and to mix it up even more we also moved the general meeting location. Good news is that the message got thru and we had a great turn out at the Royal Standard Hotel for our first meeting there. We sprang a snap trivia quiz on the group as the entertainment for the night. A dynamic duo from Ballarat took away the major prize of very nice Day of the VW 2010 Golf Cavalcade badge and joint second and third places secured some very nice hand tools and Hot Wheels models. We also had a mini VW car show going on in the street as the Royal Standard Hotels location provides some very good parking right out out side the hotel. This provides great monthly opportunity for us to get back to the reason we are all members of this club and give those VW's a run. Next month I would like to see every one turn up to the general meeting in their VW's. There might even be a little prize or two to snag for your effort. At the November general meeting the entertainment will be a "Bring and Brag" night. We haven't had one of these for a little while, so for those who haven't been to one before its simply a night where you can bring along your most treasured VW item and tell (brag) the group all about it. It can be anything, a rare VW part, accessory, magazine, die cast model, photograph, really what ever you think might interest the group. I really look forward to seeing what comes out of the woodwork.

the day. If you are able to spare an hour or two to assist that would be great. Volunteers will also get a limited edition DotVW2010 polo shirt and a DotVW enamel pin as an appreciation for their efforts. If you can assist please contact Andrew Mengyel. As a lead up event to the 2010 Day of the VW, we have organised the 2010 Chapel Street Cruise on the evening of Friday the 19th. Plan is to meet at Rancho in Collingwood, cruise thru Chapel Street Prahan, Fitzroy and Acland Streets, St Kilda and finish up at the On Top Bar in North Road Ormond for refreshments and VW chat. Full details are included in the events calendar and web site.

Lastly just a further reminder on the change to the timing and location of our month general meetings. This month the general meeting will be Thursday the 18th at the Royal Standard Hotel in William Street, West Melbourne. This is week leading up to the Day of the VW so lots of VW activities to enjoy during this week.
For Registration Forms and further information please contact:
See you all at the Royal Standard on the 18th. Don't forget to bring your Bring and Brag items and your VW.

The Day of the Volkswagen has returned to Yarra Valley Race Course. This year is looking to be another big year for the Day of the Volkswagen with Volkswagen Group Australia our major sponsor for the event. In recognition of the celebration of the Golf in Australia Volkswagen will have on display a Golf R, Golf GTD, Golf Wagon and the new Polo. Representatives from Burwin Volkswagen – Volkswagen dealer of the year will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the new cars on display or any other model from the Volkswagen range.

35 Years of the Golf in Australia Cavalcade
The DOTVW theme this year is celebrating 35 years of the Volkswagen Golf with a cavalcade of Golfs showcasing each year of manufacture. Vehicles will be selected to best represent the range of features and body configurations available across the various production eras. Nominations are open to vehicles in all states of repair including original, restored, modified, works in progress or “as found” condition. The choice of the vehicles for the display will be at the discretion of the VWCV Day of the Volkswagen committee. All selected entrants will receive a specially minted 35th Anniversary of the Golf car badge. Vehicles to be judged for DOTVW show categories are also eligible to enter for this display. Owners must make additional arrangements for their show and shine entry. Golfs will be parked in front of the main grandstand while the Golfs in the cavalcade will park in front of the smaller presentation grandstand after the 11.30am parade through the venue. Classic Restos
The DOTVW will again feature on the Channel 31 TV show Classic Restos. Mark Fletcher (Fletch) created Classic Restos to provide an opportunity for people who have experienced the restoration process to share their story and showcase the results of their hard work. Fletch will be at the Day of the Volkswagen, filming an episode of Classic Restos. Everyone will have the opportunity to offer their cars to be reviewed during the show. Your car doesnʼt have to be fully restored in original condition, Modified and the much loved Rat look vehicles are just as interesting as they represent the diversity of the Volkswagen scene.

All cars will be judged before they are parked. If your car is to be judged please enter the judging lane entrance. The gate will be located half way down the driveway to minimise a build up of cars on Armstrong Grove. Once you pass the judging entrance gate there is room on either side of the lane to park you car and complete any final detailing before judging. You can spend as much time as you like detailing your car before continuing down the judging lane entrance to the venue gates where the judges will be waiting for you. If you donʼt need to detail your VW, please feel free to join the judging lane straight after entering the gate. Judging will be available from 8.30am to 9.00am for Volunteers who are working on the day but want to enter their car for judging. Public Show and Shine judging window is from 9.00am to 11.00am. Once your car has been judged you are free to park your car inside the grounds. A parking volunteer will be at the end of the judging lanes to assist with directions if needed. It is not necessary to park cars in model groups. Please feel free to park with your friends. This year, the Day of the Volkswagen judging arrangements for the Standard classes will again be organised by club members John Goodison and Lloyd Davies. It will continue the tradition of a ʻShow and Shineʼ event established over many years. John and Lloyd will try to ensure that the judging will be fair for all who enter. Good luck to all.

Volunteers
We also need volunteers to run the day. This means giving an hour or so of your time to direct traffic, marshal cars, judge cars, serve on the Club stand, help with the plaster mould painting, colouring in or Scalextric racing. Volunteering your time gives you the opportunity to work alongside other Club members, to get involved and expand your network of friends in the Club.as well as helping the event to run smoothly. This year each Volunteer will receive a limited edition Day of the Volkswagen 10 Volunteerʼs Polo-shirt and Pin for their contribution.

Volkswagen Club Victoria Historianʼs Corner One of the new features of the Wagensville news will be a small piece of history of the club seen through members at the time and details recovered from old editions of Wagensville News. The items will hopefully give you an insight to some of the issues of the day and difficulties the members faced in a different time period. I hope you enjoy my discoveries and please feel to contact me if you can enlighten us further or correct the register to what actually happened at that time in the clubʼs rich history. ……in November 1990. Jon Edsell was the Club President, Bill Malkoutzis was Vice President and Kim Whittles was Secretary, all active members even today. Cameron Stewart was the Editor and for anyone knew him then, calling him a character did not cover the whole man! The highlights of the month were the Annual General Meeting on the 15th, a Service Afternoon at 6 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc.
Billʼs Garage on the 24th (Sat), HAC Interclub Motorkhana at Calder on the 25th and Type VW Monthly Meeting on the 27th. (Two meetings in one month, now thatʼs keen!) More on the Type VW Group in the next few episodes. The ʻNewsʼ carried articles about the 009 Distributor, the Audi Fox Gland a personal story from the Editor. Advertisements included items from Vintage Vee Dub Supplies, Australian VW Performance Centre, Eureka Sports Cars, Volksplace, Wolfsburg Automotive and MR Bug. These supporters formed the inside and backside covers of the magazine at the time and a carefully placed date stamp on the front cover page, so you knew which edition you were getting in the mail! ……in November 1982 Jon Edsell was the Club President, Tony Barton was Vice President and Neil Tattersall was Treasurer, no Secretary was listed but the committee got the affairs of the club done and
got the information out. The highlights of the month were the Annual General Meeting on the 18th (again, not in Sept as is now) and the ARCO Alpine International Rally which Steve Kosa as organizing a group of VWCV members to go to. That was a fairly quite month compared to 1990. The ʻNewsʼ carried articles about Group Five information including the ʻAlpineʼ from Steve Kosa our Rally Liaison officer of the time and Navmaker Five, a interesting event organized by Kurt Jones and held in the Dandenong Ranges. Members were required to navigate a trek of over 130 kms on unmade roads and unmarked roads and still navigate out! If anyone has some photos or more stories around these items, I would like to hear from you soon. Regards, Chris Scane - VWCV Club Historian
The New Golf R
Volkswagen Group Australia
More Power, Less Fuel: New Golf R with 188kW and 8.7 Litre Combined Fuel Consumption The new Golf R is here. Designed by Volkswagen Individual. All-wheel driven. As the flagship of the model series it is equipped with standard Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights. Shifted manually or by optional DSG. At 188kW it is the more powerful than ever before and at the same time, it is the most fuel-efficient Golf R of all times. A high-class sports car with compact-class fuel economy. The data in detail: The Golf R sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. The Golf R performs even better when shifted with the optional direct shift gearbox (DSG): It leaves the 100-km/h mark behind it in a sensational 5.7 seconds. The best data: While the retired Golf R32 processed 10.9 litres fuel per 100 kilometres, the new Golf R only needs 8.7 litres. This translates to a 1.2 litre better fuel efficiency than the previous model. Accordingly, CO2 emissions are reduced from 259 to 201 g/km (manual) and for the automatically shifted Golf R DSG, CO2 emissions are as low as 197 g/km. The enormous efficiency gain of the new Golf R is not some magic trick rather it is the result of intelligent downsizing. Its legendary predecessor generated its power from a
displacement of 3.2 litres and six cylinders. In the new model, however this is accomplished with four cylinders and 2.0 litres of displacement, which equals a highly advanced direct injection petrol engine with turbo-charging (TSI). Most noticeable at the fuel pump and on the winding mountain road, this high-tech alliance is superior to a classic six cylinder with multi-point injection. Proving that even the sound of a four cylinder can leave a strong impression are the fifth and sixth generations of the Golf GTI, also powered by a four cylinder TSI. And the Golf R − and the chrome dual tailpipes of its sound-optimized exhaust system − display a significantly broader “sound spectrum”. The TSIʼs torque characteristic is just as impressive. By comparison, the six cylinder of the previous model developed a maximum torque of 320 Newton-metres at 2,500 rpm. That too was remarkably good however the turbo four-cylinder direct injection engine of the new Golf R, on the other hand, transfers 330 Newton-metres torque at 2,400 rpm and can maintain this peak value up to 5,200 rpm. This means that the new Golf R truly delivers a fascinatingly high level of fundamental dynamic performance.
THE NEW ALL-WHEEL DRIVE OF THE GOLF R The Golf R transfers power to the road via the latest generation of Volkswagenʼs 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, which comes as standard. Compared to the version implemented in the Golf R32, the system has undergone significant advanced development. Above all, the power transmission between the front and rear axles – especially the all-wheel differential that operates in an oil bath – demonstrates clear advantages compared to the previous generation. The most important development is that of the activation of the all-wheel differential which no longer requires a difference between the front and rear axle speeds. 2010

loco gringos (melbourne) pit
WARWICK DRAG RACING 2010 The first weekend in October was fast approaching and the members of the Loco Gringos Racing were at fever pitch preparing their cars for the 5th annual VW Warwick 2010. Warwick is a two day VW drag racing event and the second meeting in the two event VW drag racing series for 2010. The series is organised by Craig Hughes from VW Magazine with. The other race meet is held at Portland Vic in February. At last the cars were ready and loaded onto the trailers in preparation for the journey ahead. This year the Gringos had three cars, Andrew Ermel with the Grey Ghost, Steve Craven with Beetle Juice on his new trailer and Mike Clarke with his beetle, travelling with them was their highly professional pit crew of Mike Cronin crew chief, Ewan Munro and David Clark. As Wednesday morning came to life Andrew, Mike, Steve and Ewan headed north to Warwick, with 1600 kms ahead of them it was not long before those immortal words were heard – ''are we there yet?'' - unfortunately Mike Clark had to work so he and David followed on Thursday afternoon. Dispite all the careful preparation all hopes of an uneventful trip were soon dashed as Steve noticed his instruments were playing up but as the car was still running well and we were approached the new BP at Wallan we decided stop and load up on caffeine. On returning to his car Steve found it would not start, a quick battery change solved the starting problem and we were back on the road again. Unfortunately the coffee was obviously not strong enough as our brains had not had started to work properly or we would have realised that there was something else wrong. After only a couple of hundred kilometres further up the highway Steve’s car started to play up again. A quick detour into Cobram for an alternator swap (not quite pit lane times but still a pretty quick change)
then we were on our way again. With no further problems we reached our over night stop at Dubbo. The next days travel was uneventful with us arriving safely at the track although the amount of water along the road from Goondiwindi to Warwick should have been a hint of things to come. Friday morning arrived with a steady stream of keen racers turning up to the race track and setting up camp. The rest of the day was taken up with preparing the vehicles and catching up with fellow drivers while checking out the competition. There was a good cross section of VWs on show with an increase in water cooled models, Chris McGaugheys 76 Mk 1 Golf took a bit of getting used to with what must have been the widest tyres seen of a golf. He still managed a respectable 8.99 sec @ 76.79 mph. Check out the pictures in the latest copy of VW Magazine Australia. Mike Clark arrived safely as did Borris and Borris (better known as B1 and B2). With the ever present potential of breath testing drivers and crew it was a trip to the RSL for tea and then a quiet night, for most of us. B1 and B2 were only there as spectators so say no more. Saturday had finally arrived with a total of 74 cars registered for the weekend, unfortunately the street parade was cancelled due to the park being inundated with water so with a cautious eye on the weather it was straight into qualifying. Engines were reving, tyres were smoking and the smell of race fuel was in the air as drivers started to get a feel for the track and how their cars were performing. A good day of practice runs was had in between with showers wit the Warwick track crew doing an excellent job of drying the track out after each shower.

Michaelʼs Cockpit Beetle Juice on Duty With the forecast for Sunday not looking good plans were made to run the finals into Saturday evening, but as with all best laid plans as evening approaching the weather closed in stopping any chance of racing. With the racing finished for the day everyone adjourned to the marque for Saturday dinner and the traditional rocker cover racing and noisy group of Mexicans in the corner. The mixing of Tequila and Coronas may go a long way to explain a bit about Mexico. Sunday started of with a good breakfast of bacon and eggs and the chance for another pass before the finals started. This finals proved to be eventful for the Gringos with Mike Clarke being the first Gringo to retire, followed by Andrew who after winning his first two passes came up against Steve Craven for the first time and being determined to show no mercy jumped the gun and red lighted by the smallest of margins. Of course Andrew was unaware of this and while going flat out to catch Steve heard a horrible bang which turned out to be the crank shaft dividing its self in to two pieces. This left Steve to be the only Gringo to survive in one piece and complete all four passes. Although we did not come away with any trophies all drivers achieved respectable times for their normally aspirated cars, the best times where; Andrew with a 2330 cc achieving an 8.07sec @86.21 mph, Mike Clarke with a 2332cc achieving 8.17 sec @ 85.39 mph and Steve Craven with a 2020cc achieving 9.65 sec @ 70.53 mph. As the racing was over for the weekend it was a quick pack up and back on the road to Melbourne, with an overnight stop we were back in Melbourne by Monday evening. Overall a good weekend was had by all with thanks to Craig Hughes from VW Magazine Australia, with Mick Motors being the major sponsor for the 2010 series being joined by Volkswagen Genuine Parts and Rod Penrose Racing. A special thanks should also go to the crew at Warwick Drag strip for the efforts to keep the race meeting going despite the weather. If you have got this far and are interested in VW drag racing come to Portland in February 2011 and support you Loco Gringos or join in and have a go, you don’t need a special car. reV LKS 10.10.10 The excited chatter over Volkswagen forums and social networks had anticipation high for reVOLKS, which did not disappoint. Having grown from small foundations, reVOLKS in its fifth year, turned national with its first interstate cruisers. reVOLKS is the inception of brothers Doc (Daryl Dakin) and Rossko (Ross Dakin). It started out as a coffee cruise to Geelong for the Melbourne folk to mingle on the coast. It transformed 3 years ago into a weekend event consisting of a cruise with an overnight stay, and a car display in Geelong. To the regulars the Saturday cruise, a convoy around the picturesque Otways and The Great Ocean Road, is known as the Cuban Cruise. Cuban cigars were puffed over this first weekend, and smoking cigars is somewhat of a tradition now. This year the cruise began on Saturday departing Waurm Ponds, Geelong at 10.30am - a lavish sleep-in hour. A colour spectrum of 20 Dubs, already making the passengers and passes by smile, and it was only the beginning of the weekend. First stop, Martians Café in Deans Marsh. Here a few late comers from Melbourne caught up, and a small convoy from South Australia joined the cruise. Deans Marsh is an iconic venue for the Cuban Cruise and a special place for one lucky fella, as it is the location of the birth of his nickname. Steve Burger celebrated the 1st anniversary of his naming. Happy Birthday was raucously sung and celebrated with a few beers over lunch (Happy Birthday again Burgs!!). reVOLKS is a casual choose-your-own-adventure weekend. At this point you can either head with Cruise ʻVʼ which takes you straight into Lorne - the overnight stop, to shop and relax, or take Cruise ʻWʼ the 2.5 hour scenic drive to Lorne. After waving ʻsee you laterʼ to some, Cruise ʻW” continues to meanders through the tree lined scenery of The Otways, pausing briefly for the view overlooking the Barwon Gorge. While twisting and curving around into Skenes Creek, people were entertained by ʻRadio VWʼ an impromptu vintage style radio show brought to the listeners by Surf 76 over the CB radio. Another stop to look at the ocean view this time, and a beverage for thirsty drivers at Wye River, before Cruise ʻWʼ headed for the campsite at Lorne. A function room was booked at the Grand Pacific Hotel, where the proprietor owns a low light Kombi which graciously ferried all the campers to and from the pub. Itʼs the perfect place for drinks, dinner, a game of pool, and also the announcement of the inaugural “The Arthur Memorial Medallion”. Arthur was the Dakin's father who passed away last year while the brothers were attending a Volkswagen event. They inherited their passion for Volkswagens from him, whom had taught them to drive in Split Screen Utes. The medallion was founded not as an award but to honour their father and the VW community spirit they particularly experienced during their loss. The first recipient of “The Arthur” very deserving went to long time reVOLKS attendee Anthony ʻStealthʼ Surie (You are a champ!). Sunday morning allowed for a luxury coffee and photo moment at the Lorne Surf Club before heading to the Volkswagen display at Steampackers Gardens on the Geelong waterfront. What a great turn out, with over 85 cars on display, doubling numbers from the previous year. The sunshine brought air and water Volkswagens, plus more interstate visitors, from Tasmania and New South Wales into a fabulous carnival atmosphere. reVOLKS would like to thank the Volkswagen Club of Victoria for sanctioning this event, Jock for his fantastic waterfront marshalling, and to everyone for making this year an incredible event. From the Archives Volkswagen Report 9 Printed in Germany in January 1979 the Volkswagen report number 9 “A car is built” documents the process in the production of a two door Golf. From the bare sheet metal right through to the finished vehicle the production steps are fully detailed and explained. This particular Golf starts its life at 3.25am with the freight train delivering the 30 ton sheet metal coils to the Wolfsburg plant. The completed Golf is rolled of the production line at 8.40pm where it is loaded onto “Volkswagens” own railway for shipping to various places around Europe. An interesting fact that this report detailed many of the intricate production steps and the time that critical production processes occurred during the day. These including the fitting of the paint code card in the spare wheel area, evidence that the paintwork had been approved ready for the final assembly. The use of paper “punch cards” along the production process keeps track of the correct assembly procedure and accurately records events and the production information. This card is kept right up until the time the customer takes delivery of the vehicle to show that the delivered vehicle meets the order fully. The report list many of the parts as the “ingredients” such as the sheet metal, paint, cast iron, steel, light alloys, glass, rubber, plastics, text tiles, and electrical cable. “Together, they become worth more than the sum of there individual items – thanks to the know-how of the automobile manufacturer”. Pure poetry in report! Andrew Ermel - VWCV Assistant Editor
