Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the April edition of the Wagensville News. Firstly, I would like to congratulate those members who won the pointscore prizes for 2005. For those members not present at the March General Meeting, the winners were: Club Champion - Ross Woolley. Ross has attended most events during the year and organised the 4day cruise in November 2005. In addition he set up the Club Membership displays at most events. Ladies Champion - Cheryl Ermel. Cheryl has contributed by her attendance at most events, and has also organised the catering at many events and has been a pillar of support to the Club Committee. Best New Member: Vince Zito. Vince has been very active since joining the Club and has joined the Committee this year in the capacity of Restoration and Technical officer. President’s Award: Matt Kinsey. For the last 4 years Matt has been the editor of the Club Magazine and has transformed the Wagensville News into one of the best car club newsletters in the country. In addition to these annual awards, the committee has awarded a “Special Award” for 2005 to Eric Roberts. Back in 2003, Eric came to the committee with the idea of conducting a Swap Meeting in his home

town of Bacchus Marsh. The event has been run over the last three years and has become one of the highlights of the year, and one of the best providers of revenue for the Club. Eric has organised the whole day himself with keen club members assisting on the day. Thanks a lot Eric and we are all looking forward to this year’s event. On behalf of the committee I must pass on a special thanks to all who assisted in planning and preparation of the three events leading up to the VW Jamboree on the last weekend in March. The main people who organised the weekend were Anthony Surie and Nathan Leversha. Thanks a lot. Even the last days of the Commonwealth Games couldn’t detract for the interest and attendance in these events. The BBQ get together on the Friday evening was very well organised and prepared by Vollkommen Art at their premises. Thanks guys very much. This was followed by the evening cruise down Chapel Street to the German Club which again was very well attended, so much so that quite a few members had to sit outside as the area reserved for the Club was full. I must thank “Delux” and “Dubcustoms” for their sponsoring of this event. Finally, the Jamboree at the Caribbean Gardens was a great success with over 80 cars entered on the day. Again, the weather

was very kind to us and contributed to making the weekend certainly one to remember. As mentioned last month the Club’s web site has been upgraded by David Holinger and if you haven’t checked it out yet, please do it now. David was present at the Jamboree and was very busy with his camera, so watch the web site for photos. Our committee member who is responsible for Restoration and Technical Sessions, Vince Zito, who also won the Club Award for the best first year member in 2005, has organised a Technical Day on Saturday the 20th of May at Antique Tyres in West Heidelberg. So come along and check out the huge range of tyres which are available for your Volkswagen. The Dinner Dance and Concourse is fast approaching on the 27th and 28th May. For the Dinner Dance, we have 28 people booked so far but it would be great to get the 100 on the night, which would make it a great evening. So don’t hesitate, book now through Jodie Surie on 0414 274 277. I’ll see you soon. •

> Congratulations to Luke Doerner, son of VWCV member Harald Doerner, who was part of the Australian Kookaburra hockey team which won three gold medals at the Comonwealth Games.

Thank You The VWCV would like to thank the following businesses for their support of the 2005 Day of the Volkswagen: • Classic VW • KDF Werks • Antique Tyres

• Vintage VW • ACE 30 oil made by QPL • Wolfsburg Automotive

• Volkscare • Volkshome • Volksparts

Vollkommen Art Open Night > Anthony Surie and Nathan Leversha some great cars in progress on display and lots of their customer’s cars were parked along side the entrance under lights for all to inspect. Some of the cars displayed in the workshop were a Karmann Ghia cabriolet with a few trick body mods - not to mention the time and effort seen in the lead wiping which was done to this car, just like the factory would have done back in its day. Also, a late model square-back with factory roll-back sunroof, slammed on sprintstars just goes to show they can mix it with the best of the early Type 3s as well. Another interest was a few of George’s bikes. The detail put into these lowriders was amazing. My favourite was Nick’s tubbed Beetle for nice Sunday drives, packed with lots of go-fast goodies! Heaps of food and drink was on offer, thanks to the guys. What a great way to feast

Friday night was the kick-off for a big weekend of Volkswagen fun, run by Anthony and Nathan of the VW Cruises. The first event was a BBQ night at Vollkommen Art’s workshop. Nick and George have sponsored the Jamboree for a few years now and organised to put on a free BBQ. Situated in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton is their workshop where they work their magic from standard restorations to wild horse power street cars. The workshop had

sitting in front of a giant screen showing all the cars from past to present and even a few snippets of footage showing passes over the quarter-mile drag strip in Nick’s Beetle. To top it all off a DJ was mixing up the beat. It was more like a street party with heaps of cool cars. The street was packed with some great cars as well as people parked out front. It was a great night to just sit and chat and meet up with other people and make new friends. The next event was Saturday night, leaving enough time to get the car ready and to have a sleep in after a late night. •

THANK YOU to Vollkommen Art for their sponsorship of the VW Cruisers 2006 Jamboree and for their wonderful hospitality on their open night.

Chapel Street Cruise > VW Cruisers Chapel Street Cruise by Anthony Surie and Nathan Leversha...

Saturday night was now upon us and I’m sure there would have been a few last minute repairs and changes done to cars for the Delux and Dub Customs Chapel Street Cruise. Everyone started turning up at the meeting point on time and parked up in an orderly fashion. The cars coming around the corner couldn’t believe there eyes as 50 VWs of all shapes and sizes looked stunning in the twilight. It was a great time to get out and take a walk around these beauties and have a chat with old friends and make new acquaintances. There were heaps of new cars on the scene and some very low ones as well. The good old favorites were on the scene to take in the great Chapel Street Cruise that has been run for 3 years now. Everyone had their cameras firing and talking about the big day coming up on the Sunday. Free tickets where handed out for the

14

door prizes supplied by Delux and Dub Customs located in Dandenong. They were to be drawn when we arrived at the German Club. After a good chin wag and a few Kodak moments, everyone was ready to cruise down Chapel St and then on to the German Club a short distance away. The trip down Chapel street was a huge success as always and provided the café scene with a perfect view of all that is VW. The cars looked fantastic driving down the strip in a slow and a ‘look at me, look at me attitude’, and from what I could tell the crowds loved us! Arriving at the German Club Tivoli, it was a very busy night for the club indeed, as there was a dinner dance and a Bavarian Night that had the club jumping with lots of oompha music and traditionally dressed Germans. The place was absolutely packed. The looks on the faces as all the cars turned up was great - just glad we had our own function room booked that was equipped

with our own bar and waitress, plus a video set up for a presentation of various VW meets in the U.S., which gave an insight of how big the VW scene is there. It was now time for good German food and the odd German beer not to mention the pretzels. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, these pretzels are making me thirsty!!! A few lucky winners took home some good prize loot. On offer were T-shirts, stickers and some cool models that were a part of the prizes that had been drawn. Big thanks to our sponsors Deluxe and Dub Customs for the donated prizes and also to the German Club Tivoli for all that they provided. It was a great night and a late one at that. Now all we have to do is get up early for the big day ahead. • > Action from the Chapel Street Cruise. Photos courtesy of Anthony Surie.

THANK YOU TO

VW Cruisers Jamboree > Anthony Surie and Nathan Leversha The Jamboree was a big day for both the organisers who have been running this VW Jamboree for 6 years now - with the weather forecast for 32 degrees it was going to be another hot one. It was an early start at the Caribbean Gardens, setting up the staging point and making sure everything went smoothly with the layout on the day. The swappers were there early as always, trying to clean out some room in the shed or just looking for a bargain. Things where well on the way by 9am as cars started to pour in for what was going to be a great day. Lots of new cars that had been restored or just taken out of the garage turned up for the day. There was also some ‘not so new’ cars on display that had not seen the road for at least 20 years. It was a real eye opener to see these beautiful examples in the flesh. It was great to see a good display of

16

early buses out in force. The DSK (Der Split Klub) fraternity gathered at a nearby suburb to cruise to the Jamboree with safari’s in the open position. They had 7 splitty’s in total that entered the grounds and made their way to set up a display. 4 more split screen buses turned up as well to make a total of 11 pre ‘67 Type 2s at the event - a good turn out that always pleases the crowd. The show sponsors, Vollkommen Art had a few new rides to show off - the ‘70s Type 3 Sunroof Squareback of George Economou was a real hit with the crowd and was awarded a worthy prize for best Type 3. It will be even better I’m sure when it’s fully completed. And the ever increasing Rat look scene produces a lot of interest and even won some awards. The “Hertz Bug” from Josh was a head turner as was the newly finished “Frosty Boy” Beetle of Phil Berry.

Outdoor Shop Group Membership > John Stevens

With the level of interest that is currently being demonstrated in trips and weekends away, like the recently booked-out Kennett River Trip, ‘Round Victoria Adventures’ and also general overnight camp-outs the club has made arrangements with three outdoor stores that will provide terrific benefits to both individual members and the VWCV. These arrangements provide for membership of group schemes with Anaconda Adventure Store in Canterbury Road, Bayswater and all Rays Outdoors stores and a general discount that applies at all Aussie Disposals stores. The deal is:• Aussie Disposals will now give a 10% discount to all VWCV members in any of their Victorian stores on production of the VWCV membership card. Arrangement is now effective. • Anaconda has given me a big supply of their Ultimate Adventure Club membership application forms. All our club members need to do is complete the application and send it off (electronically is OK) to Anaconda. Once processed Anaconda will offer VWCV members various discounts on store brands,

gas refills, rental rates, sales brochures and invitations to their Ultimate Adventure Club events and discount nights. 5% of the value of all member sales is directed to VWCV. • Rays Outdoors has given me a big supply of membership applications, pre-paid return mail envelopes, membership cards and covering information. Again, these will be made available to our members at meetings and all they need to do is complete the application and send it off. Once completed Rays will offer 6.5% discounts to members store wide on all lines, 3.5% of sales back to the club and access to special larger discount programmes. This applies at all Rays stores. Please come and see me at any club meeting for the application forms. If you are already a member of either the Anaconda or Rays schemes it is suggested that you re-apply under the new arrangement and cancel your existing membership so that the club can get the benefit of the % of sales rebate. The club is also planning a very special night at Rays Outdoor Store in Nunawading on Tuesday 11 April 2006. Details appear elsewhere in this magazine. This will be a great opportunity to get product information, gain big discounts on a huge range of outdoor goods and participate in raffles/give aways. Please put this date in your diaries now so you don’t miss out. •

All Hail the New Audi > From ‘The Herald Sun’ - 3/2006

You are looking at the first official photo of the next Audi TT. The German carmaker has released this teaser image to whip up interest in the second generation of the two-door sportscar, which is due in Australia late this year or early next year. The picture shows the deep, big-mouth grille that is being introduced across the Audi range, and the body's wide stance. Audi designers have enhanced the menacing shape by replacing the existing car's rectangular headlights with slit lights. We won't see the rest of the model until next month, but in-house design sketches suggest the new TT has not departed radically from the current one. Audi caused concern among TT fans when it unveiled the Shooting Brake concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last October. The Shooting Brake, which looks more like a hatchback than a sleek two-door coupe, was interpreted by many as a pointer to the next-

generation TT. It now seems the new TT will pick up some frontal design cues from the Shooting Brake, including the grille outline and the narrow headlights, but not the hatchback-style tail. Wider and longer than the current car, it is expected to be offered as a coupe at first, then as a convertible. Like the current TT, the new model probably will be available as a front-wheel-drive and an allwheel-drive. The 1.8-litre turbo engine powering the TT may be dropped for a more potent twolitre turbo. The TT line-up will also feature a top-of-the-line model with a V6 engine. Audi may use a scaled-down version of the Shooting Brake as the basis of its next-generation A2, which is being developed as a direct rival to the Mini. Audi never sold the current-generation A2 in Australia. The radically styled cityhatch, which used a lightweight aluminium body, was too small and too expensive to be considered for sale here. Audi Australia has confirmed it will import the storming RS4 wagon late this year, and will start importing the thunderous RS4 sedan in May. It will cost about $170,000. •
