Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President

Well, the year is fast coming to a close. It seems the older you get the faster time flies. The Day of the Volkswagen again proved to be a great success. It was blessed by Melbourne’s wonderful late spring weather, a great turn up of show cars, plus plenty of other VWs to boost the numbers. There was also a positive response from swap site holders and an increase in the number of VW Traders present. A special thanks must go the all the interstate people. We really appreciated you active participation and presence this year. Again, thanks must go to Camberwell VW and Shannons for their continuing support of our club. Please remember this when buying your new or used car or taking out or renewing your car insurance. Please remember the December General Meeting is on the second Tuesday not the third. The meeting date is Tuesday 14th December. The committee is actively developing the events schedule for 2005 and this should be available early in the new year. Many exciting and different events are

6

planned for next year, so keep reading. The book “Volkswagen in Australia” was previewed at the DOVW and those who previewed the book were very impressed. Credit must go to Rod Davies and his team of helpers in preparing a wonderful book, which will be a mandatory requisition to any VW enthusiast’s book shelf. Order forms are in the November and December Wagensville News, so please complete the form and send if off prior to Christmas. Remember our Club will generate $10 per copy from the order forms received from this flier as well as those completed at club meetings. Finally, I would like to thank all committee members for their work and support during 2004. The club is in a very sound position and can look forward with confidence to 2005 And to all club members I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. Please remember to drive safely over the holiday period. Merry Christmas to all. •

Story of the 1969 Type 3 > The Mengyel family 1969 Type 3 Squareback - Andrew Mengyel In our family, the first car that came into our lives was a 1961 Black VW 1200 Beetle that we bought from a German family who moved to a Ford Falcon of the day. (Much to the previous owner’s chagrin, as we heard that his old car - our Beetle - was much more reliable than his new vehicle!). Although we did not do overly great amounts of mileage in those days, the Beetle did its fair share of trips in and around the small country towns that we lived in at the time. The only mishap that we had was a flat tyre in the period that we had the car. Two years later in a trip to Adelaide, my father traded the black Beetle on a brand new 1963 white VW Beetle 1200 Deluxe. Therein lies a secret; because there were small, but important, improvements made over the years the re-sale value of the Beetle remained high. After six trouble free years with the white Beetle, we persuaded him to buy his third and last Volkswagen, a 1969 Type 3 Squareback (stationwagen). We were on our way to a new car. During the changeover negotiations and before the white Beetle could be traded, a young couple came to the dealership looking for a low mileage, one owner vehicle. Dad’s Beetle had covered only 26,000 miles in 6 years and so fitted their requirements. The couple took our white Beetle that day; because of this wheeling and dealing (pardon the pun) we were left without transport. The dealership took care of this by loaning dad a Type Three Fastback Auto for the family to get around in until our Squareback was delivered from Melbourne after being imported in CKD form from Germany.

14

The new Type Three The Squareback dad bought was a complete change from the Beetles we had in the past. It was bigger, quieter and more powerful (hard to imagine, but yes, the Type Three was more powerful). It sported a new type of motor which under the load area in the rear (also known as the ‘suitcase engine’ in the trade), as well as having a boot in the front - of course this is a Volkswagen we’re talking about! The icing on the cake, of course, was the IRS and the automatic transmission, which was a big thing in those days, as all Volkswagens then were only available in manual form. In the Australian market, the Beetle came along with the auto option first in 1968, followed closely by the Type Three in 1969, and then later the Kombi in the late 70s. Accommodation was quite a change from the cramped quarters that we had from the Beetles. The comfortable bucket seats in the front were adjustable to 59 different positions and a fold down rear seat, although the car still only had two door configuration. The Squareback that my Father had bought was the top of the range

for that model year - with hinged middle side windows, external trim pack options, over-riders on the bumper bar, a grip moulding on the front hood, parking lights, two door pockets, padded back seat arm rests, chrome exhaust pipe ends, and a second outside rear vision mirror. In the motor department, the only difference was that our vehicle had the twin carburettor set up. This, as it turned out, was a minus. Although they gave better performance from the de-tuned motor, they proved difficult to keep in balance and tune. The Down sides Although very reliable and easy on fuel, the Squareback had a few down sides. It was not fast, and definitely had a lack of a few horses in the back. It could, however, cruise at 140kph all day if need be, as its cruising speed was also its top speed. In addition, as the advertising material of the day extolled, the vehicle did not have three metres of heavy exhaust to drag around, and no tail shaft. Consequently, the car made the most of what few kilowatts there were, and, indeed, the auto is certainly no slouch and takes off quite smartly compared to its manual counterpart. We also found out that the Squareback had a tendency to wander at high speed in cross winds (although not as badly as the Beetles did) which was due to the rear weight bias of the car. Volkswagen makes the changes to the

Model line-up. So we kept our Type Three while VAG Germany blew in huge changes the air cooled, rear drive models made way for the water cooled, front drive Passat, Polo and Golf, that were to change Volkswagen’s direction. Whilst the Squareback does not have any of the options that are virtually expected in the modern vehicle, such as air conditioning, power steering, fast glass, electric mirrors, and the like, the model reflected the simplicity that was the bench mark of the time. There were some options available and these were usually dependent upon the market for which the car was destined. As an example, vehicle destined for the American market had different trim and options of opening rear hopper windows, and sunroofs. In Summary Our Squareback has certainly led a good life, always being garaged, and we certainly spared no expense on the vehicle, whatever needed to be done was done. In turn the station wagon was used by everyone in the family and was a very reliable form of transport. Today the car has covered only 108,000 miles (173,772 kilometres) in 35 years, and will no doubt do many more in the years to come. •

Day of the Volkswagen 2004 > Paul Kinsey - DOVW Organiser Well, the DOVW is over for another year. For the second year we held this event at the Yarra Valley Racing Club at Yarra Glen. We changed the layout this year following suggestions from last year. The swap sites were moved outside, many under the trees with plenty of shade. We had approximately 27 sites compared to 18 last year, which was a great result. We also added some more interesting displays under the covered area, which provided a centre of interest. We had our sponsor’s Camberwell VW and Shannons plus trader’s including some from interstate, Classic VW and Vintage Vee Dub from Sydney, and KDF Werks from Tasmania. Thanks very much for your support of the Day of the Volkswagen from all our club members. We must also give special thanks to the Penrose brothers Rod and Wayne and their team for their sensational displays of the VW Cabriolet and the VW Drag Car. Thanks very much for your effort, which was the focalpoint of the day. A total of 137 entries were received for the show and shine and a special thanks must go to Richard Graham and the team of judges which again had a difficult time judging the winners in each class. Thanks to all club members and visitors who entered their cars in the show and shine. They presented a wonderful picture spread under the trees. Thanks again to all the judges. In addition to the cars entered in the show and shine, we had approximately 600 plus keen VW enthusiasts pay entry to view our cars and we received 17 new club members on the day. The club membership area this year was very well supported by Mercedes Woolley and Kim Murray with the help of other club

16

members. Thanks very much for your effort and active involvement in attracting new members. The other big attraction in the area was the preview of the book “Volkswagen in Australia” prepared by club member Rod Davies. This preview was really outstanding as it gave many of us an insight into a book that we have been hearing about for the last year or so. It really lived up to all our expectations. I’m sure Rod will be flooded with orders prior to Christmas. This year the organising committee consisted of Richard Graham and myself. We put a lot of effort into the planning and budgeting for the event. We had forecasted a profit of $5268 but we were happy when the final results were calculated showing that we had made a profit of $5957. A very good result and will certainly will greatly assist our club’s finances.

The Main areas of Income were as follows: Sponsorship (Camb VW/ Shannons) $1750 VW Trade Displays $1100 Persons entrance fees $3764 Vehicle Entrance Fee $1830 Clothing sales $910 Swap Site sales $675 Catering sales $2404 Memberships $1380 Total $12433 Expenses (Major): Ground Hire Catering Costs Prizes Clown Table Hire Printing of Brochures Total

This event would not have been so successful without the excellent support of our sponsors, Camberwell Volkswagen and Shannons Insurance. In addition, we were well supported by the following VW Traders: Australian VW Performance Centre, Croydon Volkshome Automotive of Thomastown Wolfsburg Automotive of Essendon Classic Vee Dub Supplies of Sydney Vintage Vee Dub of Sydney Volkscare of Boronia KDF Werks of Tasmania

MIB Global ( Models) Bentleigh East Mercwreck and Volksparts of Dandenong Technical Book Shop We need to support our sponsors and Traders so that they will continue support our club. Our swap sites this year were in great demand. Thanks to Stuart Ermel for his co ordination role. This year, we provided our own catering with major organisation by Cheryl Ermel and Ross Woolley with support from many keen helpers throughout the day. Thanks for a job well done to all involved. This year we had to call for help for the computer work for tallying and summarising the judge’s results. We must thank both Malcolm Thomson and Michael Cronin for their expertise and tremendous assistance in this role. Thanks guys. Again, on behalf of the organising committee I would like to thank all the Club members who assisted on the day and Saturday. The list is long and I hope I have not missed any one. Thanks a lot. To all who attended the DOVW this year, thanks for your support but please spread the word so we can make it better next year. •

My Life as a Kitchen Wrench > Cheryl Ermel Well another DOVW has come around, and I must say it looked pretty good from the kiosk window. Looking back I wonder how I ended up there, along with the dozen or so other catering volunteers. As most people know, the club has catered for the DOVW last year with much success. The feedback from that event was that it provided good cheap food and drinks to members and returned a profit. This year again, I took on the job of organising the catering. Ross and Mercedes having considerable experience also offered to help which was gratefully appreciated. So for weeks prior to the day, Ross, Mercedes, Paul, Richard, Andrew and myself worked together to organise the food. Learning from last year, we decided to have everything ready prior to Sunday. This meant that we needed to clean and set up the kiosk on the Saturday. Arriving on the Saturday with two carloads of food and utensils, Ross, Andrew and I started in earnest. It was at this point Paul, Richard, Donald, Stuart, John and Helen, Harald, Bill M and John Stevens joined us. They were put to work, cleaning, cutting food, loading fridges and generally helping out. Saturday night was very eventful as we found out that a ball was being held in the grandstand. This delayed the setting out plans, but we continued on getting other areas ready for the next day. Since Richard, Donald and Stuart appeared to be standing around, they were conned into becoming valet parking attendants for the ball. Donning their yellow jackets, they looked like the real thing. The payment of free food and drink from the function manager was too tempting to be refused. However, by the end of the night (about 1am), there was no food or drink, lots of noisy drunks leaving, yelling and blowing horns and very little sleep. I must say seeing the one Japanese car left in the middle of the covered area in the morning created a few laughs (1st prize in a raffle) and much thought about how to either disguise it or remove it from the area. In the morning, the rest of the helpers arrived. The car was removed, and we began selling our wares. The hottest items for the day were the cold drinks as the weather hotted up. As per catering policy we tried to make sure all the DOVW volunteers were given food and drinks free of charge as a thank you for helping out on the day. I hope all our volunteers were well looked after. Many thanks to everyone that helped in the catering. Ross and Mercedes, John and Jan, John and Helen (new club members), Fleur, Frances, Louella, Matt K, Evan (bought a Kombi and will join the club soon), Andrew, Donald, Stuart, Harald, Paul, Richard and Bill M. Also thanks to our backups – Aaron and Emily, our PA announcer Matt G and everyone on the club stand who covered for Ross and Mercedes. If I have forgotten anyone, please accept my thanks for helping out. This year the catering profit did not reach our expectations, but the feedback so far indicates that the club provided good cheap catering that is important to making the DOVW an enjoyable event.

Did Volkswagen Make Tractors? > Bill Sundermann Porsche makes tractors as do Mercedes, Fiat etc, but what about VW? During our trip to Germany, we found that Mercedes S class sports cars had been designed by and were being built by Karmann as were Chrysler Crossfires. In fact, Karmann made body parts for a whole range of cars with Jaguar being one that comes to mind. Volkswagen was making Mercedes vans, the big ones called Vito or Sprinter. It should not have surprised me when my brother-in-law invited me to check out his VW tractor. He showed me this B250 series International (built in the 50s and 60s) and, to my wonderment, each casting on the whole tractor has VW logos cast into it. I have since checked out 2 others with the same result. These tractors are in high demand amongst collectors and bring around $5000 when restored. My query is - “What category should this vehicle be entered in at the Day of the Volkswagen?

Motorsport News > Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5 2004 has been an interesting year for Motorsport in the VWCV. We have not had as many people participating, but the ones that have participated have done well. Just about every VWCV member that competed in a Group 5 event gained Group 5 Points. Given that you have to be in the top 6 (in your class) to get Group 5 points, and in some classes there have been in excess of 15 competitors, this means that we have done very, very well. Well done every one. Also this year we have had some 1st timers have a go, and go quite well, finishing close to mid – field in their first event. Early next year we will be running a Motorsport Training Day. It will be for VWCV members only, so it will give you a chance to try entry-level motorsport, a Motorkhana and a Khanacross. You can use your VW, or your daily driver (Holden, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc.), whatever, as long as it has 4 wheels and an engine. We will have experienced VWCV members explaining what you have to do to enter, how the events are run, and giving tips on how to do your best. We will also explain what type of Motorsport events the VWCV is typically involved in, and what is required to get involved in them. We will offer information on where you can go from this entry level, and what is required to get there, if you want to know. So if you have been thinking about giving Motorsport a try, this will be your opportunity. I am planning to have the event in February or March, so if you like it and want to compete some more, you will have most of the year to get involved with the types of events that we offer. As well as the competing side of motorsport, we will give instruction on the officiating side of motorsport. We will explain what officials are required to put on an event, and

24

what each one does. Every competitor will get a go at doing some officiating, so you have an idea of what goes on “on the other side of the fence”. Even if you do not want to compete, come along to give officiating a try, as the VWCV needs more motorsport officials. Also next year we will definitely be running Khanacrosses again. We will run a VWCV member only event, probably a month after the Training Day, and then run an invited event where other clubs are invited. Depending on demand, we will also try to get invites to other club’s Khanacrosses. The Motorsport events currently planned for 2005 are listed below: 2005 Group 5 Motorkhana Dates: February 12 HAC to be confirmed April 3 CRBCC to be confirmed May 8 FFCC BP Truck stop, Somerton May 29 HSCCV Toyota Club Grounds, McGrath Rd., Werribee July 7 PIARC to be confirmed August 14 VWCV Geelong Motorsport Complex, Princes Hwy, Avalon, (TBC) September 18 VMCi to be confirmed November 6 TCCA Toyota Club Grounds, McGrath Rd., Werribee 2005 Group 5 Sprint Dates: March 20 HSCCV Morwell HillClimb 2 April 10 PIARC Phillip Island Race Track May 1 PIARC Phillip Island Race Track, (TBC) May 22 VWCV Autocross, Geelong Motorsport Complex, Princes Hwy, Avalon, (TBC) June 19 PIARC Phillip Island Race Track

DOVW Race Display > Donald Ermel If you are into fast, race ready Volkswagens then the “2004 Day of the Volkswagen” would not have been disappointed. In the last few years the club race scene has grown steadily with the introduction of the Beetle Cup and drag nights at Calder Park raceway, This was evident by the excellent club display of race cars on DOVW. Representing the Beetle Cup class were Richard Graham in Herbie and Andrew Ermel’s beige Beetle. Both have done consistently well in this class, Michael and Julie Clark displayed their KDF racing beetle featuring duel 44 weber carbs. This car has competed in hill climbs, khanacrosses, and as well doing great times. Also on display was the 1956 oval Beetle prepared for the drags by Andrew, Stu and myself. The addition of the stinger tip to the exhaust added nicely to the 2lt motor and when started it bought people from every where to see what car was making all the noise. Beetles were not the only VW on display either! Bruce Woodwood’s modified Mk 1 Golf drew a constant line of people to see what was under the hood, most walks away with the look of amazement after Bruce explained the modification carried out on the power plant. We will hear more about this car when it makes it, debut at the island in the near future. As well as the local guys putting their cars on display, we also had some very well known drag racers from interstate. The week before Rod Penrose and family had made the trip down to Tassie from NSW for the “VW Association Day” and went on to tour Tasmania for a further week. His timing to arrive at our show was impeccable and allowed us to put the fastest VW powered drag car in Australia on show. Powered by a 2.8lt turbo charged fuel injected autocraft motor, this car has smashed world records with figures of 8.96sec mile at 155.89mph (249.42 kph) and 0-200kph in just 5.4 seconds! Another interstate visitor was Adam Debiais who had travelled from Adelaide to try his car at Heathcote Raceway. With a paint job that most people would be envious of, just looking at this very well presented car you would never guess that it has the reputation of been the fastest street legal Beetle in the country. Powered by a turbo charged 1916 fuel injected motor, this car is driven daily and is capable of times of 11.88sec at the ? mile. With next year already in planning, we hope to see some sort of racing take place as part of DOVW. With all these fantastic cars on display it made for one of best DOVW yet and once again without the people who brought their cars along the display would have nothing. So a big thank you to you all, and also a special thank you to Rod and Adam.

Motorsport Pointscore > Jon Edsell on the 2005 Motorsport Pointscore and Annual Trophies 2005 motorsport discipline. This Overall result at the end of the year will be used to determine the Perpetual Trophy (if available) winner. So if a person competed in a motorkhana and came 1st in Open Class and 3rd overall for all VWCV competitors, he would get 10 points for that event toward the Motorkhana Open Class Championship; and 7 points for that event toward the Motorkhana Overall Championship and Perpetual Trophy.

Motorsport Competitors The points awarded from 1st to 8th, will be 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and for 9th onwards 1 point to be awarded. This way, everyone that competes will get at least 1 point. This pointscore system applies to both the Open and Beetle Classes. These points will NOT be added to the Club Championship pointscore, and will only be used to determine the Beetle class and Open class winners of the Motorkhana, Khanacross and Sprint Club Championships. All competitors will continue to get 4 points as event attendance points which will be applied to the Club Championship pointscore. Perpetual Trophy (Overall) Champions The same 10 to 1 pointscore system will be applied to ALL competitors, irrespective of class, in order to determine the Overall Champion of the club in the particular

Motorsport Officials In an effort to encourage more members to officiate, and to maintain the interest of the officials we already have, the Officials pointscores are: Director 10 points Stewards 9 points Event Secretary 8 points Scrutineers 7 points Timekeepers 6 points Marshalls 5 points Canteen Duties and others 4 points If you do 2 different types of duties at an event (e.g., Scrutineer, and then after finishing that, help out as a Track Marshall), then it is proposed that you receive the points for the highest scoring position that you participate in, plus 1 (one) point. So for the example above you would receive 7 points (as a Scrutineer), plus 1 point extra for then being a Track Marshall, i.e., a total of 8 points. It will be possible to receive officials

points for officiating at non VWCV Inc. organized motorsport events, as long as the event is an event that is calendared in the VWCV magazine (Wagensville News), and it has been marked as an event that attracts points. These points will NOT be added to the Club Championship pointscore, and will only be used to determine the winner of the Officials championship. All officials will continue to get the appropriate points for event attendance (for all events nominated as pointscore events) and event organization (for VWCV organised events only), which will be applied to the Club Championship pointscore. Trophies At the end of the year it is proposed that the following motorsport trophies be made available for presentation, as long as at least 2

events of the type have been nominated as club events during the year: Beetle Motorkhana Champion, Open Motorkhana Champion, Beetle Khanacross Champion, Open Khanacross Champion, Beetle Sprint Champion, Open Sprint Champion, and Officials Champion. Also, the Perpetual Trophies (if available), for the Overall Champion will be awarded based on the procedure described in the paragraph, Perpetual Trophy (Overall) Champions, above. It is also proposed that events in December and January be excluded from the pointscore, due to, holidays (January), and enable time to collate the points before the end of the year (December). •

VW to undercut BMW's big off-roader > from carsguide.news.com.au Volkswagen is taking the fight up to its competitors, including BMW's popular X5, by adding a second turbo-diesel model to its Touareg sports off-roader range. The R5 has gone on sale for $69,900 – nearly half the price of the range-topping V10 turbo-diesel. A Luxury R5 version will cost $78,600. Both models are available only in six-speed automatic and powered by the same in-line five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This 2.5-litre motor generates similar levels of torque to the V8 petrol model. Claimed output is 128kW at 3500rpm and 400Nm between 2000rpm and 2300rpm. The pricing undercuts the more powerful (150kW/480Nm) three-litre turbo-diesel automatic BMW X5 by almost $6000 for the Luxury R5 and more than $14,000 for the base model. Volkswagen spokesman Brad Leach says that the R5 is being introduced as a mainstream model to take on the BMW X5 in the SUV segment. "The idea of the model is to have a diesel engine in the sub-$70,000 segment. The V10 is in a different segment," he says.

The VW Club of Victoria is authorised by VicRoads to issue Classic and Historic plates to financial club members with VWs over 25 years old. The main objective of the CH permit system is to enable club members a minimal registration fee because of the vehicles limited usage. The club requires all CH vehicles to undertake a safety check every two years. Safety checks are similar to roadworthy checks. A roadworthy certificate can be accepted in lieu of a safety check. The appointed club technical officers conduct safety checks at Tech Days and by appointment. A safety check ensures that the CH plate vehicle is safe to drive on club gazetted events and approved limited usage. It also encourages the maintenance, restoration and preservation of all types of VWs.
