Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the December edition of the Wagensville News. Well, another year and a another “Day of the Volkswagen” completed. This was the third year the DOVW was held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club at Yarra Glen and was the best supported. We had 149 cars entered in the Show and Shine and many others on display within the grounds. We filled up the space, whereas in previous years we appeared to have heaps of room. We need a serious think about the venue next year because at our rate of growth, we may need to reconsider the venue. I have written a detailed report on the event which appears later in this month’s magazine. Thanks to all who supported the event this year Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13th December, the second Tuesday in the month not the third. This is to schedule our meeting away from the busy time we all have in getting ready for Christmas. We will have a special Christmas dinned in the Bistro at the RACV club from 6pm onwards and will start the meeting at 8.30pm to allow time for us all to enjoy our dinner. We will also have some Christmas
cheer at the General Meeting, so don’t forget the earlier date. The Club is in the progress of deciding what datashow projector we should purchase to enhance the visual communication at meetings. We hope to have the projector early in 2006. We will be able to use to show progress of the clubs finances, event planning, photos and videos of club events and DVDs. Because of the Christmas holiday period there will be no January edition of the Wagensville News but it will be published again in time fore the February meeting. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families, a very happy Christmas and a happy New Year. 2006 promises to be another exciting year for our Club and your involvement in various Club events will give you a great deal of satisfaction whilst getting to know other club members a lot better. Most of all, please drive safely over the festive season. •

DOVW 2005 > All the action from the 2005 Day of the Volkswagen... The third “Day of the Volkswagen” (DOVW) held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club at Yarra Glen is over. For the last two years we had spare spaces for cars, but this year, just about every piece of grass had an oil drip or two from a VW. It was a great show assisted by the weather and a tremendous turn up of many different types of VW’s. The traders arrived early, some even the night before to get their stands ready in time followed by the swappers laying out their sites with the gate being opened to the public from 9.00am. Again Stuart Ermel did the organisation of the Swap site . Thanks a lot Stuart. At the gate to greet those arriving was Andrew Ermel, Richard Graham, Chris Antonello and Ray Cantor. Thanks for the time and the consistency of assessment of the show cars, classes etc. This year we exceeded last year’s entry of cars in the show and shine competition with 149 cars Vis last years 132. Although improvements were made on the judging sheets and the computer programming, it still took Head judge Richard Graham, Michael Cronin, Malcolm Thompson and John Farlow time to enter and grade the results. Thanks for the efforts of the judges on the day and a special thanks to Richard, Michael, Malcolm and John for the improvement over last year’s event. This year we decided to set up a bigger Club Stand which include the areas of membership, expertly organised by Ross Woolley with his new computer, Ross was able to accept new members, enter their
names on the Club’s data base, then print of their membership card and even laminate the card. Not to be out done, Ross’s darling wife Mercedes (no relation to Benz), had a great range of new Club Merchandise, which was in great demand. Much of it was sold on the Saturday with keen club members trying to have something different to wear on the Sunday to impress their friends. It worked. Well done Ross and Mercedes for a very professional approach in selling the Club.

This was very well received by the public with 35 new members signed up on the day. This was double what was achieved last year. I must also thank Cheryl Ermel, Kim Murray and Kingsley Morrison for their assistance on the day and their fantastic result in the selling of the raffle tickets. This has set a very high standard for future events. This year DOVW organising committee consisted of Richard Graham Michael Cronin, Malcolm Thompson and myself and thanks very much guys for the effort put in during the year. We budgeted to make a profit of $4665 but this was again exceeded with an actual profit of $7286. A breakdown is as follows: Main Areas of Income Sponsorship (Shannons/Camberwell VW) $1750 VW Trade Displays $2490

was again an increase on last year’s event. Thank you for your support. Those present this year were: • Classic VW • Vintage VW • Volkscare • KDF Werks • Ace Oil • Volkshome • Antique Tyres • Wolfsburg Automotive • Volksparts Our sponsors this year really supported the event very well with Camberwell VW supplying 4 cars and a special service discount for the day. Shannon’s this year expressed the desire for a more tranquil setting in the shade under the trees with all the beautiful cars and transporters. We were keen to oblige. Thanks very much for your efforts on the day and your continuing support of our Club. The Traders who participated this year
The catering this year was provided by the Lions Club of Park Orchards, and with their Beetle burgers, sausages, egg and bacon rolls, hot chips plus the traditional Lions Club Christmas Cake complemented the tea and coffee served. Thanks guys. The funds generated by this activity will go to community projects of the Park Orchards Lions Club. For the lovers of espresso coffee, this was provided by the “Combi Coffee” VW and
So much for so little... > carsguide.com.au - 11/2005 A sporty sidekick could eventually join the Golf and Polo at Volkswagen. VW has dropped hints about a potential revival of its Scirocco. It did preview work two years ago with the Concept R roadster, and followed up with the EcoRacer at the recent Tokyo Motor Show. The bright yellow EcoRacer was billed as a combination of economy and sports, with a body that can be a coupe, convertible or speedster. It could revive the Scirocca name used on a VW sports coupe through the 1980s. There is a place for a two seater in the line-up and VW is pushing technology with the Eco Racer, which has a carbon-fibre body. It has a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine which is claimed to use only 3.4 litres/lOOkm, even though the car delivers l00kW, 0-I00km/h in 6.3 seconds and a top of 250km/h. “There is certainly, potentially, a position there if we think a roadster is good for the brand,” Volkswagen spokesman Matthew Wiesner says. The EcoRacer comes as VW sets up an earlier show car, the EOS concept from Frankfurt. For production. It may replace the long-running Golf Cabriolet, but is based on a larger mechanical package - it will have two-litre FSI and three-litre V6 engines - and is a four-seater. “That car will be on sale in spring in Europe, which is about May,” Wiesner says. VW is about to hit the first of its sales objectives in Australia, When it returned as a full factory operation, it aimed for 15,000 sales, and it could hit the mark this year. “It has turned out to be quite a good year” Wiesner says. •

Thank You The VWCV would like to thank the following businesses for their support of the 2005 Day of the Volkswagen: • Classic VW • KDF Werks • Antique Tyres
these guys were also kept very busy on the day. Our Public Announcer for the day was again Matt Gardner for the third year. His involvement with Puffing Billy is giving him plenty of practice and again another outstanding effort. Matt’s ability to walk around with the extension cables kindly loaned by club member Kim Whittles, allowed Matt to also be part of the Club Stand. Thanks Matt and Kim. On behalf of the organising committee I would like to thank all the club members who assisted on the day. The list is too long to mention all individually but thanks very much to all that helped. Again there were many new restored cars which haven’t been on show before. Obviously many hours of work goes on though the year by keen VW enthusiasts to get the cars ready for the show. This is continuing to improve the standard of our cars and it is very difficult just to maintain our cars with the quality bar being continually raised. After three years at the helm of the organising committee we need a change, and I will be standing down as organiser. We need fresh new ideas for what has now

become one of the largest VW Shows in Australia. As we continue to grow, we will be looking for members to get involved in 2006. It is a very rewarding experience and we have a well documented process which will assist those taking part next year. Thanks for your support over the last three years and I look forward with great interest to the DOVW in 2006. •

Bugatti Simply the Best > From carsguide.com.au - 11/2005 Australia's police can sleep easy. The world's fastest production car, with the ability to run at nearly four times the legal speed limit, is not coming here. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has a top of 407km/h and can catapult to 100km/h in a neck-snapping 2.5 seconds. It is clearly quicker than a Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT and Mercedes McLaren SLR supercar. But it is being built only with left-hand drive, ruling it out of contention here. That's quite apart from a price of $1.4 million, delivered in Europe and without the freight, insurance costs or taxes that would put it well above $2 million in Australia. The Veyron is the first car to emerge with a Bugatti badge since the company, which produced French super-exotics in the 1920s but failed in the 1950s, became part of the Volkswagen group. There was an earlier attempt to revive Bugatti, but it took the cash and commitment from VW - which produced a Veyron concept as far back as 1999 - to make it work. The Veyron is the personal favourite of VW chairman Ferdinand Piech and is a cost-no problem attack on the top end of motoring. It is a two-seat super-exotic sports car with every possible luxury feature. Its 16.4 nameplate comes from the number of cylinders and all-wheel-drive.The car has just been previewed at the Tokyo Motor Show and test driven by a small number of journalists in Europe. It is the pace package receiving all the attention, thanks to its eight-litre W16 engine and all-wheel-drive system. The car has four turbochargers and produces an outrageous 736kW with a neck-twisting 1250Nm of torque from as little as 2200 revs. It has a sevenspeed double-clutch sequential manual
gearbox, fully independent suspension, special high-speed tyres and carbon ceramic brakes. It even has three suspension settings to maximise cornering grip at regular road speeds and to run at more than 375km/h. That is when its adjustable wings pull back into the body to minimise drag and the car is lowered closer to the ground. Luxury is handled by everything you would expect, from twin leather-trimmed seats to airconditioning and CD sound. Bugatti plans to make 300 cars, but will take six years to hit the figure at its special production plant at Molsheim in France, where the company was originally based. It is a new factory, complete with a small test track, and the emphasis is on meticulous assembly with a specially trained team. And it stops faster than it goes. It will stop from 400km/h in 450m. "The driver needs to make no compromises anywhere. It doesn't ask them to put up with noise or smells or quality glitches. It is quiet, comfortable and easy to drive fast. Quality is superb," Taylor says. "Bugatti had no trouble blowing its own trumpet at the official unveiling of the Veyron 16.4 in full production form." Bugatti Automobiles president Thomas Bscher says the Bugatti Veyron is the best sports car in the world. "The Veyron closes the gap between myth and vision," he says. "We have laid the cornerstone for leading one of the most renowned and reputable makes of automobile from the virtuality of the past into the hard competition of the future. “It is just the beginning. This automotive brand is alive - and will live on." •
