another

big day

The Day of the Volkswagen 2007 dawned a wee bit grey and not quite the 30 plus degrees and sunshine promised by the weather gurus. That was not to dampen the spirits of Victorian Volkswagen enthusiasts as the real storm thundered in to Cranbourne from all directions.

All was very quiet upon arriving at the Cranbourne Turf Club at 6.00am.

At 9.00am on the dot the floodgates were opened and the growing lines of VW Show and Shine entrants and “The lull before the storm”. pedestrian entrants started to flow thru the gates. The Early Registration The first of the traders turned up at 6.30am with Gary Collis from Wolfsburg process certainly eased the congestion thru the entry gate this year. It still Auto trailering in the special VW that wasn’t perfect but better than last was to be unveiled to the eager crowd year. For 2007 we had over 50% of the at 11.00am. The trickle of traders Show and Shine entrants take up the and swappers turned into a torrent early registration offer and score a very as the clock ticked ever closer to the nice DOTVW T-Shirt. Was great to see 9.00am opening time. The South Yarra every one getting about in their official Volkswagen folks turned up in the 3 DOTVW T-Shirts. VW Road Show Car Transporters with The couple of hours from 9.00am 18 of VW’s latest and greatest new to 11.00am flew by as our fleet of vehicles. The South Yarra Volkswagen hard working volunteers parked and display inside and the VW Road Show positioned 217 show and shine entrants Transporters flanking each side of the in their respective categories. show entrance on the outside were a fantastic sight’s to see. President’s Report Michael Cronin, VWCV President Once again the club has had a great year culminating in the Day of the Volkswagen. A big well done and thank you to Dean and all those that helped make the day another big success.

Overall I think the total number of cars were about the same, although more people entered the show and shine. There was however a big increase in spectators who turned up just for a look and where do all the kombis keep coming from. I could not finish without thanking our two main sponsors for the Day of the Volkswagen, South Yarra Volkswagen and Shannon’s Insurance. It was great to see the Volkswagen Road Show and all the new VW’s on display complements of South Yarra, thanks again. On to the new year, the first club event will be the Picnic at Hanging Rock on

Sunday 10th February 2008, this will be the 21st Picnic at Hanging Rock and as we won the best club display last year without trying (we did not know that there was a competition) this year the club would like to guarantee a win. This will be followed by the Camp Out at Kennett River on the first weekend in March, which will include the Annual fishing and surfing competitions, if there is any surf? Check the web and magazine for full event details. Next year will also involve the planning for the Bug-In to be held in Victoria during Easter 2009, with proposals to be presented at the 2008 Bug-In.

If you have any ideas or want more information on the Bug-in please contact the Committee. This also goes for any ideas you may have for events next year, let us know and we will do our bet to accommodate. In closing I would like to thank all those that have made this year a successful one, at times we tend to forget that they are all volunteers devoting their free time to make things happen. I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas with safe VW motoring and hope to see you all again in the New Year.

Club Meeting at SHED 4 February 19th at 5.30pm

It’s Big!

Straight after this vehicle unveiling, our judging crew headed off to start the huge job of judging 200 VW’s entered in the Show and Shine.

The first 25 cars can park inside on display. In keeping with the BIG SHED, we have a big screen for VW galleries and DVDs.

The new judging process developed by Lloyd Davis and John Goodison saw the judging standards refined from last year with a series of bonus points separating cars on the basis of various criteria ranging from original paint and parts on original VW’s to degrees of innovation for modified VW’s. Judging was completed at 2.00pm and the process of dishing out the Trophies to the lucky winners was sorted soon after.

BBQ will be cooking courtesy of the VWCV from 5.30pm, sausages (yes they will be big). BYO a chair and the beverage of your choice and come along early for a snag and a chat before the meeting at 8.00pm.

Day of the Volkswagen 2007 Trohpy Winners.

There were a few surprises on the day and did not envy the judges job as the standard of VW’s in the Show and Shine was very high this year. Congratulations to all the winners and runner ups. Commiserations to all who didn’t win this year, but remember there is always next year, so get wrenching, painting and polishing. you Shannons, Flashlube, Care Safe, By about 3.30pm the trophies were all Volkscare and VWCV for your support. awarded and we declared the 2007 Day Also a massive thanks to our 50 odd of the Volkswagen closed. The crowd volunteers that worked hard all day, on started to disperse and an orderly cue the gates, parking, judging or manning of VW’s worked their way out of the the club stand. These events run on Cranbourne Turf Club and another volunteers and you need a crew you successful Day of the Volkswagen was can rely on and you guys did a great job. now VW history. Most of you were there at the end of There are lots of people to thank, to start with, a huge thank you to our major sponsors South Yarra Volkswagen and Shannons. The contributions these two companies made to our day is very much appreciated. Thanks also to the Cranbounre Turf Club and our trophy sponsors. Big thanks also to the traders present that worked hard all day. Feedback was that a lot of traders did very well on the day, so a good result for all. We can’t forget the contributors to the DOTVW Showbags, thank

the day to receive your special DOTVW Volunteers Pin. If you missed out, please let us know and we will forward one on to you. Thanks also to the interstate visitors that made the trek across from Sydney, Adelaide and even Brissie to attend our Day. Vic VW guys wouldn’t be too happy to see a couple of trophy’s heading out of the state, but that’s competition for you. Finally, thanks to all of you, our membership, for making the Day of the Volkswagen 2007 a success. We are already thinking about the day for 2008, so please pass on any feedback you might have about what we can do to better next year. STATS FOR THE DAY. Shine and Shine Entrants - 217. Spectators thru the gate - 850 plus 20 Swappers - Lot more than last year. 17 Traders represented Cheers Dean Holden, VWCV Vice President, Day of the Volkswagen Co ordinator.

FEBRUARY

Just after 11.00 Gary Collis took centre stage and slowly unveiled the special pre war VW. The car was presented as a Volkswagen prototype, 1937 Hanomag body on a 1943 Kubel Pan. A very interesting vehicle with an interesting history. More on the pre war VW in the February Deluxe issue.

The actual trophies this year were a standout with our supplier Waverly Trophies producing an excellent range of trophies and medals that featured our DOTVW 2007 Bubblehead logo. These trophies were well worth winning.

Calendar of Events

The Kombi area quickly filled up and the overflow moved into the Karmann Ghia area. The Rat Look guys had a massive turn out with 20 entrants in the Rat Class this year. Water Cooled hill had a very nice turn out of all models of Golfs and things water-cooled. The Water Coolers category is getting bigger every year too. Motorsport this year attracted a lot of attention with many showing interest in the cars on display and the up and coming events in 2008.

5.30am - a quick look out the window, yep, those dark clouds are still hanging around and to make matters more interesting, a strong wind has now picked up. A couple of hours later, thunderclouds are now rolling in from the North Coast. Weather wise will be an interesting day.

The group then broke up after we all went down to the fishing wharf, visiting Andrew & Stewart, Julie and Mike Clarke, (no fish), bloody windy and freezing. Not good weather for fishing! Some of the group did a cruise around the township, others went back to

We later all left around 9.30am after breakfast and drove to Eden, some broke away from the group to do their own thing. Some visited the Killer Whale Museum, while others cruised the main street and others visited the wharf down on the Bay.

The convoy steadily moved on through Cann River, when the lead Kombi driven by Stewart Ermel suddenly encountered a bike rider who had just hit the gravel, lost control and skidded on the blacktop. Thankfully, he was only shaken, and more embarrassed than anything else by the whole incident. After some questioning from Stewart, it was ascertained that he was OK, so the convoy then moved on……….. We travelled for about another hour or so, eventually stopping at our lunch stop at Wallagaraugh River Rest Stop, near Timbillica, just over the Victorian/ NSW border. Where after the chicken and champagne lunch, and another couple of heavy showers of rain, we decided to move on the last 70km to Merimbula. On arrival, some of us registered at Tween Heads Caravan park, while others bought Fishing Licenses in town, for tomorrows breakfast (!!!).

At 12.30pm we regrouped outside the Caltex Servo and drove the 10 or so km to Boydtown, our lunch stop. When lunch was over, we then headed back towards Merimbula, stopping on the way back at Pambula Hotel which was built in 1878, for a quiet beer or two enjoyed on the wonderful verandah edging along the main street, where you can watch the passing parade. (The odd three legged Dog or two!!) Then, after an hour or two break, back at the Ranch. At about 6.00pm, we all then stepped into the waiting courtesy bus, which took us to the Merimbula Bowling Club for dinner. DAY THREE After a 9.30am start, we made the 50km run north to Bega, where upon arrival, we made a bee-line to Vinnies and other various stores in town to see if bargains could be found. After several purchases were made by various members, we moved on around 11.00am to the Bega Cheese Heritage Center, just on the outskirts of town. Finding a car park proved to be quite a challenge as the car park was nearly full!

At around 10.00pm we all slowly made our way back to our accommodation to retire for the night. DAY FOUR At 7.00am we had an early start, most of us had a full days travel ahead of us. We started with our Breakfast BBQ to fuel us for the long journey home. Slowly one by one, members arrived at the BBQ area to join in a group BBW for the last time, before individuals started to make their own way back. After about an hour, people began to leave one by one. A few members stayed on for another day, leaving on the Wednesday and took their time over an extra day. In conclusion, a fitting ending to what was to the 27 participants and the 14 vehicles that participated, a most enjoyable experience was had by all. Special Thanks go to the organisers John and Jan Stevens for all the leg work booking in for the venues where we all had meals, the Caravan park, mapping out the itinerary and the planning of things to do whilst visiting the area for the most memorable four days in Merimbula.

Sydney is running the Bug-In at Oran Park over the Easter weekend starting on Friday 21st March but they are short of club members. The Victorian Club Committee has agreed to help with car marshalling and judging. Our role will be to direct parking of about 100 cars. While the judging categories have not been finalised, the approach will be to make judging as easy as possible. Please give some thought to a weekend in Sydney, supporting your Club and helping to make the Sydney Bug In a great success. Further details will be provided when finalised, including incentives for our members to volunteer. For further information or to volunteer, please contact: John Farlow 0418 357416 farlowj@internex.net.au or visit the Sydney Bug-In website for full event details.

On a cool, but clear evening of Friday, November 23 about ten Volkswagens and their owners met early at the Dandenong Drive-In. As everyone chattered whilst waiting for the entry gates to open, an array other patrons began to queue at the gates. Three movies were on offer and many within the Volkswagen group settled on viewing ‘Fred Clause’. The kiosk was extremely busy with many selecting a meal deal before the movie. As daylight dwindled, the big screens began to show the pre movie entertainment, which prompted an immediate evacuation to vehicles.

back to our respective tables!! With lunch finished we moved on in convoy (how else!!) and took the scenic route to Merimbula via Wallagout Lake and then on to the Tura Beach Country Club where we had a few ales to settle our lunch. We whiled away some hours enjoying the scenery while watching a few golfers doing their thing.

On the way, nearly to Bairnsdale, Jo and Peter’s Kombi started to give them trouble, which was evident when after refuelling, the kombi wouldn’t start again. This was eventually traced down to a faulty Rotor, after callbacks on the CB’s between Andrew Ermel, Ewan and some lengthy assistance from John Goodison and Aaron.
