Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome folks to another exciting year at the Volkswagen Club of Victoria. It doesn't feel like another year has slipped by but with 2005 already moving on well into January, it won't be long until another Day of the Volkswagen. But wait, there are many events between now and then! The first major event is the RACV Great Australian Rally on the 23rd January 2005. Our Club's participation is being organised by Jen Littlechild, so if you are interested, please contact her as soon as possible. Our drive will commence at Brandon Park Shopping Centre. We will then cruise to Mornington RaceCourse. Proceeds of this event will go to the MacCallum Cancer Clinic. Our next event is the Picnic at Hanging Rock cruise on the 13th of February. Please be early for this one because there is a free BBQ at the end provided by the Club, which is being arranged by our Club organiser extrordonaire, Cheryl Ermel. Thanks Cheryl! For all who have not ordered the book, "Volkswagen in Australia" it's not too late. Forms to order are in this month’s magazine, so please order quickly as this book will be a

collectors item. Also remember that $10 from each purchase via the Wagensville News will go the our Club. This book is really a great read, so you need to be quick. For those of you who received a VW Book for Christmas, like me, the learning continues and it seems that each book presents another slant on the wonderful history of the Volkswagen marque. What we read in books is great, but we don't appreciate the knowledge of many of our Club members into the history of Volkswagen, especially those who have been around the Club for many years. I encourage you all to discuss any questions you may have with one of our Club members at any of our general meetings or during one of our events. I've been a member of our Club for approximately 6 years, but some of these people have been members for 30 to 50 years. We must continue to learn. I'll see you all at the general meeting on Tuesday 18th January at the RACV Club so please come along.

Thank You The VWCV would like to thank the following businesses for their support of the 2004 Day of the Volkswagen: • Camberwell Volkswagen • Australian VW Performance Centre • Wolfsburg Automotive • Vintage Vee Dub Supplies • KDF Werks • Mercwreck and Volksparts

U-Turn to Germany

Zwickau > Cheryl Ermel on the VWCV’s lunch at Zwickau

> Mikhal Surie being chaffered by Andrew Ermelkof – August Horch Museum. Photo courtesy of Cheryl Ermel.

Dateline: Sunday 19th September Location: Zwickau Peter-Breuer Str As you may have heard, by accident we stumbled across the recently opened August Horch museum. This world-class museum has some of the best displays of Horch, DKW, Audi, VW and Trabant cars, and memorabilia. Again we were in a rush and could only spend an hour looking around the museum. From here it was decided to get some lunch at a local pub before our drive to Nurnberg. Our intrepid bus driver Leonard then proceeded to drive the bus right into

16

the centre of Zwickau to find our authentic lunch. What better place than opposite the famous Dom St Marien. The Domgarten/Bruabaus was a quaint beer garden with plenty of space to accommodate 28 hungry tourists and one German bus fahren (bus driver). We were all happy in the sunshine eating local cuisine and drinking the local beer. After lunch, Joy G decided to explore the Dom and get some photos of the lovely square. It was a surprise when Joy bought back her newly discovered friend, an elderly towns-woman.

I sat here... > Pictures were sourced from the internet, as I was too busy eating a very nice schnitzel and drinking beer to take photos.

Well the elderly lady made herself welcomed by squeezing in on the table and started nattered away to us in German. When we asked Joy where she met the woman, her reply was “She just followed me!” The conversation was of course about where we were from and other bits and pieces. Bernd had now finished his meal tried to translate her broken English and German nattering to the rest of the group. What a mistake! Her gaze had obviously moved to the men in the group. She must have thought all her Christmas’ had come at once as she saw there were more men than women. She quickly asked which males were single and available. Poor Andrew was asked to remove his cap so that she could admire his long ponytail. Bernd who could speak German was also thought to be a suitable catch. Each single guy in the group then was pointed out and she then proceeded to natter away to them asking questions. By then Bernd stopped translating and we were left to our imagination as to questions being asked and her intentions. It was decided that it would not be a good idea to encourage her any further as she was making herself far too comfortable for our liking. She must have gotten the message, as after some persuasion (and time) she said auf Wiedersehen and

wandered off still talking (probably about the lovely Aussie boys who got away). Well it was an interesting experience meeting the locals in Zwickau. And in case anyone is interested in Zwickau (or Joy’s friend), I have added a couple of websites with all the details and the places to visit. To really get the feeling of sitting opposite the Dom St Marien, go to this website. It is minus the umbrellas and seats, but it gives you a panoramic view of what we experienced on the trip. To see the local sites and our own watering hole in Zwickau visit http://www.wolframkober.de/zwickau/positiv/restaurants.htm

The guidelines are as follows: • The image can be a cartoon, illustration, photo, digital montage - it’s up to you! • The image must fit a card 105 x 148.5mm (A6 size). • If entering digital files, the resolution must be at least 300ppi. • Send your entries to “VWCV Postcard Competition GPO Box 1215K Melbourne 3001”. • Entries close at the VWCV General Meeting Tuesday 19th April 2005.

Winners will receive a copy of Rod and Lloyd Davies’ fantastic book “Volkswagen in Australia”. 20

The Sound of Nostalgia on Disc > The Age, December 2004 THE sound of a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle's 1100 cc engine hard at work was never melodious. The attraction was that the raspy little bugger sounded better than your footsteps as others drove past. But in a high-powered entrepreneurial spirit, two Americans have captured the clatter, the wheeze and the glory on a new compact disc called The Beetles. Greatest Sounds of the '60s and '70s. The reverberations on the disc are the 1960 1100 cc, the 1973 1600 cc, and the 1978 1600 cc fuel-injected engines. There are 30 tracks and they have alluring titles such as Idle with engine revs; 3rd gear at 35 mph; Downshift, 3-2; Turn off, handbrake; and Horn. "You can't beat the sound of an old Volkswagen," says R. Charles Gilfix, who helped create the CD. He argues that the attraction of the disc isn't so much about the sound as the memory. "Nobody has bad memories of a Volkswagen, it always evokes fond memories of a place or a time," he says. If you didn't own one, then you probably knew someone who did, he reasons. Imagine the possibilities. Sitting in a 7-Series at a traffic light, disc on, the super-duper stereo cranked up and BMW's finest luxury car sounding like a 1960 VW engine being revved. Sounds like fun, but how does one hum along to a tune like Downshift, 3-2? The disc costs $US12.99 ($A16.60) and is available at beetlesounds.com

Coming in June 2005:

Herbie's got some new tricks under his hood as he takes audiences for an action-packed spin in this high-speed comedy. With an all-star cast along for a wild ride, this comedy puts Herbie to the test - on-road, off-road, on the track and into the record books.

Motorsport News > Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5 The Group 5 Motorkhana series continues to provide entry-level motorsport in 2005, with an emphasis on fun and learning.

for those aged 12 to 18 (Juniors). Entry Fees for Group 5 Motorkhanas are $15 or $10 for Juniors.

What is a Motorkhana? A motorkhana is a low speed test of car control, challenging the driver’s ability to accelerate, brake and position a vehicle accurately. Motorkhana events are made up of a number of individual tests, where one car at a time negotiates a course that is marked out by flags, in the aim of completing the fastest correct time. Events can be conducted on sealed (concrete or bitumen) or unsealed surfaces (gravel, dirt, sand, etc) and test layouts can vary greatly from simple slaloms to complicated tests requiring reversing or the determination of the best possible route. Motorkhanas allow persons of all ages to develop and improve their car manoeuvring skills, with opportunity for practice with understeer and ample opposite-lock oversteer. As such teenagers under the age of 16 are able to learn key Car Control skills prior to being let loose on the roads, leaving them with the ability to learn more about road craft.

The 2005 Series The Group 5 Committee has decided on a change to the class structure for 2005, in order to allow for a more even competition. In essence the changes are to separate cars with Engines Over Driven Wheels (EODW), from those with Engines Away from Driven Wheels (EADW). This had previously been done for small cars, due to the abundance of Front Wheel Drive cars in that category. With the increasing numbers of larger Front Wheel and Four Wheel Drive vehicles the inequalities that were seen in the smaller classes were regularly showing up in the larger car classes over the past few years. The classes are outlined below: Class A: Up to 4250mm EODW Class B: Up to 4250mm EADW Class C: Over 4250mm EODW Class D: Over 4250mm EADW Class E: All Specials/ Unregisterable cars

What is required? Competitors can compete in almost any car, provided that it is in a safe and presentable condition. Some competitors elect to build purpose built vehicles, known as Motorkhana Specials, which are generally very light weight and a have short wheelbase, these compete in separate classes to Road Cars. All drivers are required to wear suitable seat belts and suitable clothing and shoes. The only other requirements are a Level 2 Non Speed CAMS licence, $44 or $22

22

There has been a minor adjustment to the length of the vehicles to accommodate running five classes, instead of splitting both Classes C&D into two they have been combined and split with some of the smaller cars in Class C being placed into the relevant smaller car class. Series trophies will be awarded for the highest point scorer in each class (best 8 results count toward the pointscore). Points will only be awarded to members of the Group 5 Clubs, however events are generally open to all CAMS affiliated club members. Trophies will be awarded to the fastest competitor in each class at

each event. A 6th trophy is to be awarded in 2005, being for the best Junior of the Series. Juniors will continue to compete in the vehicle class (as above) and will be scored in those classes as well as against each other on a handicap system. Handicap factors (outlined below) will be multiplied by the total time (including penalties) for the event. Handicaps Class A: 0.94 Class B: 0.90 Class C: 0.92 Class D: 0.86 Class E: 1 The 2005 series will predominantly be run between 3 venues: Avalon (Dirt & Compacted Sand), Somerton (Concrete) and Werribee (Dirt). Other venues are being sought, especially on the Inner, Eastern and South Eastern areas of Melbourne. Supplementary Regulations and Entry Forms for each event will be available from the promoting club prior to the event, or at the venue on the day of the event.

2005 Group 5 Speed Event Series A new year brings a new Group 5 Speed Event series and the 2005 series sees a slight change in the mix of events. 2005 sees the return of a SuperSprint at Sandown with the John Mott event, run by Nissan Car Club, being added to the series. This event is added to four 95 dBa SuperSprints at Phillip Island throughout the year, three hillclimbs at Morwell and two AutoCross Events at Geelong Motorsports Complex at Avalon. Unfortunately due to a lack of available dates the Winton event that has been conducted previously will not be on the 2005 Calendar. Supplementary Regulations and Entry Forms for each event will be available from the promoting club prior to the event, and generally on the Group 5 section of www.piarc.com.au Classes for 2005 have not changed, with classes for Road Registered Standard Cars, Modified Road Registrable Cars and Racing Cars as outlined below. Series trophies will be awarded for the highest point scorer in each class (best 8 results count toward the pointscore). Points will only be awarded to

Those Memorable Beetle Experiences > The Age, December 2004 Those memorable Beetle experiences: • Favourite VW sound: the chuff-chuff noise they used to make with burnt-out valves. • Favourite VW fire: when a heavy passenger in the back causes the seat springs to short out the battery. • Favourite VW push start: when the six-volt battery goes flat usually on a rainy night. • Favourite VW cattle incident: usually on a country road involving a very surprised driver and a cow/sheep/kangaroo, because of the six-volt headlights having an effective range of less than two metres on high beam. • Favourite VW run out of petrol: no fuel gauge. • Favourite VW burst ear drum: when somebody slammed a door. • Favourite VW turn indicators: using hand signals when the flip-out indicators no longer worked.

The VW Club of Victoria is authorised by VicRoads to issue Classic and Historic plates to financial club members with VWs over 25 years old. The main objective of the CH permit system is to enable club members a minimal registration fee because of the vehicles limited usage. The club requires all CH vehicles to undertake a safety check every two years. Safety checks are similar to roadworthy checks. A roadworthy certificate can be accepted in lieu of a safety check. The appointed club technical officers conduct safety checks at Tech Days and by appointment. A safety check ensures that the CH plate vehicle is safe to drive on club gazetted events and approved limited usage. It also encourages the maintenance, restoration and preservation of all types of VWs.
