Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the July edition of Wagenesville News. The big news of last month was the cruise to the Dromana Drive-in to view the movie “Herbie – Fully Loaded” on Saturday the 25th of June. A large gathering of Volkswagens of all types met at the Brandon Park Shopping Centre late in the afternoon, and then proceeded in convoy down the Monash Freeway on to Hastings Road, through Baxter and then on to the Moorooduc Highway through to Dromana. With so many cars involved it was difficult to all keep together, and unfortunately a few cars lost > A Kombi “teaming with the theme” at the Point Cook Air Museum, their way. Richard showed persistence and dedication to ensure the event was a success. The advertising of the event through radio and the newspapers was great and this certainly contributed to the great attendance. Well done Richard! Two other Herbies joined Richard’s Herbie on the night, one from Andrew Ermel and Xavier Larkin. The next General Meeting on Tuesday the 19th of July will be held at the new RACV Club at 501 Bourke Street. This facility is brand new and a big improvement over the old RACV Club. Details on location, and how to get there are shown in this month’s magazine on page 22. I draw your attention to the dress code which will be required, and all that attend must meet this requirement. I would also like to thank the club members who have forwarded articles for the Club magazine. The inclusion of these is really making our magazine great reading and is setting a very high standard. Upcoming events this month are the bowling night on the 15th of July at the Altona North Complex and the Dyno Day at Australian VW Performance Centre on the 30th of July. I’ll see you at the next General Meeting, the first in the new RACV Club. •

Kombi Recreation > John Scott on recreating his unique Kombi conversion... My brother Ray and I built our original VW van back in the mid sixties - at the time we had two identical Kombi vans in our TV and electrical business. The van was lowered 6 inches all around and was fitted with 13” x 6” front wheels and 14” x 7” Falcon wheels on the rear. The motor was a Ford 292 Culin, with new stock and sports twin 3” stainless steel pipes emptying from the extractors out each side of the van. Power was transmitted through a three speed auto to an F100 Ford diff. and Norg Worner rear end. I used to drag race and hill climb locally, and the van was a rolling advertisement for our family business. Total cost of the modifications back then was approximately $200-$300. The van had a locked diff. for the drags and standard for hill climbs. The clutch pedal was used for the front brakes and the brake pedal for the rear brakes. I sold the Kombi back in the early 1970s when kids started to arrive. Unfortunately the young bloke who purchased it rolled it over and wrote it off. (He was not hurt). The van appeared in about a dozen magazines from the period which I have held on to. Recently I was persuaded into recreating this unique vehicle for our local vehicle museum which is currently being established. I am trying the build it exactly the same but with a few modifications.

> Top - “Me” in action at the Boisdale Hillclimb - late ‘60s • Progress so far on the current van body... Opposite page - the donor vehicle for the new engine, and the new mounted motor with no extractors Photos courtesy of John Scott.
For example, 292 Ford motor - replacing it will be a 302; lever action Ford Zephyr shocks - using standard Volkswagen shocks; 14” Falcon rear wheels - 16” Falcon rear wheels to be used; single coil fan - twin EB Falcon unit to be used; GIG locked diff. Ford Fairlane LSD unit to be installed. All I have left to do is paint the body white and have the van sign written. It is a much more expensive proposition building the van this time round, but my son Trent and I have been doing all of the work ourselves. I am after a few components, and wondered if anyone out there could be of any assistance in pointing me in the right direction to source these items. I need a rear bumper with mounts, front door seals, rear engine flap seal, and blinker light gaskets (x2) for the front. Can anyone help? You can contact me on 03 5147 1251. •

Motorsport News > Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5 You may have noted I have only been to one motorsport event this year (the Training Day). This has been due to work and family commitments. So, with the Annual Elections coming up, I can report that I will not be able to continue as the Motorsport Co-ordinator for the Club. The job is fairly involved and can take up a lot of time at various times of the year, but it is good fun, and it is all worth the effort when you see the event come off well. So if you are interested please talk to me, and consider being nominated at the Elections, and, of course I will be available to help, but not to the same extent that I am trying to maintain at the moment . Motorsport was the primary reason for the formation of the Volkswagen Club of Victoria, in 1954, as a result of the success of VWs in the Round Australia trials. Subsequently, Motorsport has been a major part of the club’s activities for most of the Club’s 51 years. VWs are still competitive in various types of motorsport, motorkhanas in particular (John Rosengrave and his Mark 1 Golf are testament to that, being Australian motorkhana champions in their class, in the recent past). But you do not have to be champion to enjoy yourself, just have fun, learn a bit about how your car responds under different driving conditions in a safe and controlled environment. I do not want to see Motorsport disappear from the club scene, so if you can help out please put your hand up. That is what makes this Club so good - it embraces all forms of vehicular activity, from car shows to sprints with everything in between catered for. 2005 Group 5 Motorkhana Dates: August 14 PIARC To Be Confirmed September 18 VMCi Toyota Club Grounds, McGrath Rd., Werribee

Concours d’élégance > A discussion by L. Petschack I'd be surprised if there weren't a number of club members who, even though they may not take part in any club functions or events, always place great value in the club magazine. If you are like me, you always read "Wagensville News" from cover to cover, taking note of the sterling work that has gone into producing it and noting with interest particulars of past and coming events, technical articles, items for sale and so on. As well, you also feel that a professionally presented magazine such as ours is a great advertisement for the club. Also, like me, you've noticed the term "concourse" appearing from time to time. This term always makes me think of the French term "concours d'élégance". Events to which this label is applied seem to be "a parade of cars or other vehicles, prizes being awarded to the most elegant, best designed or best turned out" and that happens to be the definition which Collins have decided upon for their dictionary. But, I wondered, is the term concourse being used to indicate a different type of event? So I directed an enquiry to "those who know" and received a response running along these lines. "Well, we're a young club and some of the younger members obviously couldn't be expected to be as well versed as older members". So I took it as being a simple matter of putting the things down on paper to clear up the misunderstanding. No doubt, many would react by saying that "concours d'élégance" is an unwieldy term and would wish to follow the widespread practice of abbreviating to term to "concours" and I suppose that such a practice is acceptable on the basis that folk who hear or see the term are likely to be motoring enthusiasts and will have no doubt as to what is meant. •

New RACV Club 501 Bourke St > Andrew Ermel on all you need to know about the new RACV Club facilities The wait is over! Our next VWCV meeting on the 19th of July will be in the new RACV Club at 501 Bourke Street Melbourne. The entry to the new RACV building is on the ground floor at 501 Bourke Street. Members of the VWCV attending our general meetings will need to show proof of membership when entering. Your Club membership card or a copy of the current magazine with your name on the rear cover should be sufficient. All visitors and invited guests to our club meetings will be able to sign in at the front entry reception area. The new car park entry is located in Chancery Lane, a newly created road for the RACV Club. It runs off Little Collins Street and is only 150mts further up from the old car park entry. Chancery Lane is two way and can be accessed from both Little Collins Street and from Bourke Street. Car parking is available for 460 cars within the building and there will no longer be any valet parking for VWCV members. Members can drive up the boom gates and take a ticket
from the machine, park your own car and pay before you leave the building. A flat rate of $5 applies for entry after 6pm with day rates applicable prior to the 6pm entry. As most VWCV members are now driving in to club meetings the new parking arrangements are very good and with 460 car spaces there should be ample space for all. The new Henty room is located on the first floor and is where the monthly club meetings will be held. Meals are available from the all new bistro located on the ground floor just on the right inside of the main entry at Bourke Street. Adjacent to the bistro is the coffee lounge area. Meals will need to eaten in the bistro prior to the 8pm club meeting or after the club meeting finishes, as meals cannot be ordered form or eaten in the new Henty Room. This is a change for the previous meals arrangement but will make the club meetings much easier to run as meals will not be coming in and out whilst the meeting is in progress. Also members will be paying for their meals

as they are ordered in the Bistro and will eliminate the frequent problem that occurs when meals are unpaid for at the end of the evening. Drinks may be taken into the Henty Room and can be purchased form the “Wine Bar” located on the first floor adjacent to the Henty Room. The new Henty Room has full audio visual equipment and tables and chairs. The room will seat up to 75 people with comfort and is ideal for conducting our meeting in private. The RACV has dress codes of which we have already advised our club members of. So just a refresher of the dress requirements for the RACV Club: • No shorts no track suits • No singlets and no T-Shirts • No thongs, sandals or work boots • Neat and tidy jeans with no tears! • No hats, caps or bennies to be worn inside the club areas The RACV building is absolutely fantastic and I have no doubt that the VWCV members will be impressed with the new facilities and will have club rooms to enjoy for many years to come. We hope to have an RACV representative available on our next club meeting to give our members a tour of the new building and give our members an opportunity to also become members of the RACV Club and share in many of the wonderful facilities the RACV has to offer. •
Urgent Notice Safety Harness Failure - FIA D-203/T98 > CAMS Media Release - 6/2005 CAMS has been notified of a safety harness failure. This failure occurred during a collision. The harness is a 6-point type and was manufactured by "Taiwan Racing Products Company Ltd". It has the FIA homologation number D-203/T98. The FIA have been notified. At issue is the adjuster buckle of the lap belt which on the information received to date appears to have been assembled incorrectly on some harnesses with this homologation. This harness is apparently supplied under a number of brand names, and it is understood that there are several suppliers in Australia that sell this harness with their own brand name. It has been confirmed that a number of similar unsold harnesses in stock have also been incorrectly assembled, although not all. It is possible that these same harnesses have been supplied to other retailers in other countries. CAMS is issuing this notice asking all competition vehicle owners in Australia to inspect their harnesses. The homologation number appears on a label attached to each strap of the harness. If harnesses with the above homologation number are fitted, CAMS advises that they not be used until they have been returned to the point of sale for inspection. It is possible that further action may be taken in regard to these harnesses so please check the CAMS website regularly. •

Aircooled VW Engine
A Survival Story > Bill Malkoutzis on the downfall of the air-cooled engine in Australia... Continued from last issue... At the same time all of this was going on there were numerous other legislation changes being introduced, like side intrusion beams, head impact, crashworthiness, instrument panel effects in accidents, brake performance standards etc. All of this would be giving the VW board pretty clear signals that the limitations of the much loved type 1 Beetle were too great and costly to overcome and still manufacture an economically viably small low cost car. So in the end the world industrial communities out grew the Bug and all its inherent and much loved attributes of simplicity durability and economy (not to mention how cute it was!). The bug did continue to be manufactured as a convertible in the USA but it used electronic fuel injection early catalytic converters along with unleaded fuel. The only reason that it survived for those extra years as a convertible was the demand, and people that were prepared to pay the premium cost of development of an emission engine and put up with the lack of power. This demand quickly evaporated as the cost of the car obviously could not be easily justified and volumes dropped to such a degree it was not viable to continue the manufacture of the vehicle. It did continue in other countries in close to its 1976 configuration only because of the host country’s resistance to adopt comparative world’s standards either because they didn’t need to or they could not afford to do so. And so in 1976 the Volkswagen manufactured aircooled Beetle died in Australian, 28 years later its manufacture disappeared off the

face of the earth, in 2004. Question is will the tooling be shipped to Poland and the Beetle reborn as a low volume cult car for the rich? Who knows, but I am sure there is more history yet to be written on the Beetle. The next chapter in the VW aircooled engine story moves us to the mid eighties in Australia. The T2 Transporter Type 4, based 1700-2000cc engine carried the much love bay window transporters into the mid seventies and early eighties. This engine survived because of its more sophisticated design and the world’s resistance to impose passenger type car emission standards on commercial based vehicles. However this was changing, as in Australia, more and more, the rest of the modern world was expecting that commercial based vehicle should also comply with emission standard like passenger cars. Again as in the case of the beetle, a strangle hold was being placed on the next generation of VW aircooled engines, by the legislated next generation of emission standards. Now Volkswagen was looking to unleaded fuels and even more stringent tail pipe emission. Emission levels that were in the order of half that of the past. Again the challengers were to create and engine that emitted lower exhaust levels to a much tighter band of variation. The careful metering of fuel was required to achieve these targets. These temperature variation is where VW would have struggled, the operating temperature of the engine fluctuated greatly as the air would give immediate response based on engine speed. However by adding a water-cooled jacket, it worked like a “shock absorber” to slow the

variation in temperature fluctuation and limited the lower and upper temperature limits, in other words it operated in a much smaller temperature operating band. Hence why the T3 Transporter was water cooled, where emissions standards were required, and aircooled where they were not. Water cooled was more expensive, aircooled was cheaper. So again the air cooled engine was pushed out of our lives by community pressure which resulted in government legislation. This story would repeat itself again the case of the 911 Porsche, that initially were able to absorb the cost of engineering the air cooled motor to comply to the ever changing emission standards until 1998 when water cooling was the only option to meet the ever changing standards of the times. As a foot note, vehicle emissions in their basic form consist of Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon discharges from the exhaust pipe or from the fuel tank. Carbon monoxide is
basically unburnt fuel that exits the exhaust system, and hydrocarbons are either unburnt fuel evaporation from the fuel tank, or unburnt fuel exiting the exhaust pipe. Back with pre 1974 vehicles, emission standards basically required that a car discharge no more than 4.45% Carbon monoxide, (if any limitation was applied at all), and hydrocarbon emissions were free with thousands or tens of thousand part per million being discharged to the atmosphere either from the fuel tank or out the exhaust pipe. Today’s vehicles discharge 0 to 0.1% Carbon monoxide, a worn vehicle that has more than 160, 000 kilometres would discharge no more than 0.2% and hydrocarbon discharges would be well below 50 parts per million. So cars of today operate at greater than 40 times (most likely much more) cleaner than their pre 1974 predecessors. •

Herbie Overloaded > From Richard Graham and Herbie... Leading up to the big drive-in night it was a very hectic 2 weeks. After receiving about 100 phone calls for the upcoming week I was really starting to wonder what kind of turn out we were going to get for a cruise to Dromana Drive-in to see “Herbie - Fully Loaded.” After giving out heaps of brochures, having GOLD 104 FM, 101.1 MIX FM and ABC radio broadcast it all over Melbourne, and placing the ad in the Herald Sun, I soon started thinking this could be a huge event. I arrived at Brandon Park that Saturday afternoon to see an explosion of VWs everywhere. There would have been forty cars all waiting to go. Then I get a phone call from Andrew Ermel telling me that there were another forty cars down the other end of the shopping centre car park. I was blown away with the response. A quick briefing was given and we all headed off at 4pm to cruise. Once on the freeway the line of cars and headlights behind me stretched beyond the horizon. The line would have been 5 to 6kms long. It could have been mistaken from a scene from “Herbie Rides Again,” in which Herbie gathers a large number of other Beetles to thwart the villain in the movie. By 5pm we arrived at the drive-in and began moving in. We had to wait for some cars that went off course while heading down but they made it before the movie started. We had 3 Herbies and one Herbie Kombi. The entire car park of cinema 1 was full of Volkswagens. It was an awesome

sight. We had many of our usual club members, a few not so regular members and an abundance of general Volkswagen day to day driving non-members. Many people thought this would be a great way to enjoy

the new Herbie movie and make it a memorable night for both themselves as well as all the kids. It was great to see so many people brave the cold and stay for the whole night. For many of us including myself, this was the first time seeing a Herbie movie at an actual drive-in, as the last movie was shown 25 years ago. But for some it brought back great memories when they got together and watched one or more or the original 4 movies. I believe there was a small gathering by this club down in 1980 to see “Herbie Goes Bananas.” Unfortunately the drive-in it was shown at is now long gone, as well as many of the members that were there on the night. It’s good to see some still remain though to pass on these stories. The movie was great, the atmosphere was fantastic and the attendance was unbelievable. Thank you to all that came and I hope you enjoyed the night as much as I did. And a big thanks to all that helped me advertise the event and run it. Couldn’t do it without you guys and girls. •

Herbie Goes to Northland Over the weekend of June 18-19, to co-incide with the release of the Herbie movie, “Herbie - Fully Loaded” the VWCV was asked if they could provide a Herbie replica for display over the weekend. The Ermel’s obliged, working around the clock to have their Herbie ready for display. It was immaculately turned out, and certainly attracted much attention from shoppers at Northland. The weekend was also a great opportunity to promote the club, with many members assisting with the handing out of brochures and other club material. Many thanks to everybody who helped out. The VWCV were presented with free tickets to the movie as a thank you and invited to a screening on the Wednesday night (23rd June) which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Weekend at Wagga 2005 > The VWCV’s long weekend trip to Wagga Wagga by Matt Kinsey Over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend 2004 the VWCV ran a joint cruise up to Wagga Wagga in association with the Riverina Volkswagen Club. The weekend was such a success that it was back by popular demand again this year! Around ten cars embarked from the Shell Service Station at Kalkallo on the northern outskirts of Melbourne for the long trip up to Wagga, with Kombis being the vehicle of choice for the weekend. The weather was cold, wet and miserable - and it remained this way for almost the entire trip up there. After a brief fuel stop at Glenrowan, a tasty lunch was enjoyed by all at the Commercial Club in Albury. It was an uneventful trip up, with nobody experiencing any mechanical issues with their cars. We arrived at Wagga around 5pm and were greeted by members of the Riverina Volkswagen Club, who had laid on a welcome afternoon tea. They truly excelled with this - so much so that I couldn’t eat much at the “all you can eat” restaurant where we went to for dinner that night. Most club members stayed at the City Park Motel, not far from the centre of Wagga. From here the Ermel’s kindly provided Redbus as our means of getting around town for the weekend. Several episodes of “Kombi cram” resulted from this - ie. fitting as many people into a Kombi as you possibly can. I think 15 was the record for the weekend. People were amazed when we pulled in to see how many people actually came out of the Kombi - many

musing that it must be bigger inside than out. On the Sunday we cruised with the Riverina Club to Monte Cristo - a haunted house at Junee, which was about a half hours drive away. The house was exquisitely presented to represent life in the 1880s, and it was indeed rather dark and spooky. After lunch some members then proceeded to a local classic car show, where their cars soon became the centre of attention. The Riverina Volkswagen Club provided another excellent feast on the Sunday night with the farewell dinner - as usual with these things the weekend was over far too quickly. The weekend was extensively covered by the local television station WIN. Club Vice-President Richard and Herbie briefly

became local media celebrities, with Richard being interviewed, before everyone reluctantly headed back home. We did a bit of car swapping on the way home, with different members giving other members’ cars a bit of a test drive. (Ross’s car was very nice to drive indeed!) Thanks should go to Susan Price and the whole of the Riverina Volkswagen Club for their hospitality over the weekend, and again to Richard Graham for organizing another excellent weekend away. •

The VW Club of Victoria is authorised by VicRoads to issue Classic and Historic plates to financial club members with VWs over 25 years old. The main objective of the CH permit system is to enable club members a minimal registration fee because of the vehicles limited usage. The club requires all CH vehicles to undertake a safety check every two years. Safety checks are similar to roadworthy checks. A roadworthy certificate can be accepted in lieu of a safety check. The appointed club technical officers conduct safety checks at Tech Days and by appointment. A safety check ensures that the CH plate vehicle is safe to drive on club gazetted events and approved limited usage. It also encourages the maintenance, restoration and preservation of all types of VWs.
