Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the March edition of the Wagensville News. As I write this month’s ramblings all the members and friends who attended the Kennett River weekend are still on a high after having a wonderful time. Unfortunately I could not attend and it sounds like I missed a great event. I must thank the organisers for the event - Cheryl and the Ermel boys, for their excellent work and to all the others who helped over the weekend. I understand that approximately 80 people attended, which is a fantastic response. The Club also thanks the proprietors of the Kennett River Caravan Park for all their assistance over the weekend and their support of the ‘Club Site’ which was provided free of charge. They have also passed on a very special thanks to all Club members and their guests who attended, for their excellent behaviour and helpful attitude over the weekend. It appears that there is a growing interest in the ‘Club’s’ events this year, as we had approximately 60 cars turn up to the Picnic at Hanging Rock on the 12th of February. We were one of the best represented car clubs on the day. The weather was excellent, and the barbecue provided by the Club was well organised by Cheryl, Andrew and Stuart Ermel, with many Club
members jumping in and assisting with the catering and cooking. Thanks to all who helped. It was good to see so many VWs present on the day, as the event seems to be attracting an increasing number of American cars and less European marques. Other news for the month is the continuing use of the Club’s data projector at the general meetings, which is providing an educational aspect to our meetings by showing historical Volkswagen DVDs. In fact, some of our members who have old VHS tapes are having them copied on to DVD, so it appears that we have many more informative DVDs to come. So don’t forget our meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at the RACV Club. At the next meeting on the 21st of March we will be presenting the Club trophies for 2005. The Club’s web site www.vwclub.com.au is receiving many hits requesting membership information and e-mail questions for information on VW. The Club’s web master David Holinger is currently upgrading the site to make it more user friendly and easier to update. I expect that this should be operational within the month so keep visiting the site. We also welcome any suggestions on how it can be improved.

Another reminder that John Stevens has arranged the General Meeting in April at Ray’s Outdoors at Nunawading, where the store will stay open for us from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. They will be offering HUGE discounts on outdoor gear which will be of special interest to members, and in particular to those going on the central Australian trip. However, the date of the meeting has had to be changed to Tuesday the 11th of April - so please don’t forget to change the date in your diaries. For all those members who are not going to the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, Sunday the 26th of March is the VW Cruisers Jamboree at the Caribbean Gardens, Scoresby. Once again the event is being organised by Anthony Surie and will be sponsored by Vollkommen Art. But wait - there’s more! In addition to the Jamboree, Vollkommen Art will be opening their workshop at 7pm on Friday the 24th and will provide a barbecue for all those hungry people who attend, while on the Saturday night a Chapel Street Cruise has been organised and will commence at the park in Alexandra Avenue opposite Como Park - with the cruise going to the German Club Tivoli on Dandenong Road in Prahran. I’ll see you at the general meeting on Tuesday 21st March. •

Electrons in the Car > Everything you wanted to know about your car’s electrics by Bernd Wachs... ELECTRON's topic for this month is wire. Wire, for those who don’t know what it is, are those long bits of coloured spaghetti looking stuff that runs around in the body of the car which interconnects a lot of electrical gizmos such as lights, switches, ignition coils, battery, alternator etc. The job of the wire is to guide electrical energy to various devices in the car to enable them to perform special jobs such as being converted to light in light bulbs, being converted to a spark to ignite petrol / gas vapour, which is then converted to mechanical energy which makes the car move. Wire is mainly made from copper and comes in different thicknesses, depending on the amount of current (electrons) that are required to be transported from A to B. For example, the internal light usually requires a small wire (size of spaghetti) whilst the cable running between the battery and the starter motor is usually a large wire (size of the average garden hose). There can be up to about 2 kilometres of cable in some modern cars. In some auto stores wire is sold on small reels with the words "mm in diameter" or "8 amp (current) rating" marked on them. This information is not necessarily correct when choosing cable, unless you know that it has been produced and marked by a reputable cable maker. Usually when they talk about diameter they talk about the overall diameter which includes the insulation, or they say it is 8 amp or 16 amp rated wire. However, when you take a good look at it you will notice that the insulation is thicker on the 16 amp rated cable, but the actual diameter of wire is not appropriately thicker when compared to the 8 amp wire. The correct way of describing wire current handling capacity is related to the actual wire area (diameter) square millimetre

(metric) or AWG (American Wire Gauge). The correct diameter choice requires you to know the current needed, length and voltage drop (loss) permitted. I will discuss this in more detail next month. Component of the Month Each month I will describe in basic terms the operation of an electronic component so that you have a better understanding on the complexities of car electronics. The component for this moth is called a "diode.” The main purpose of a diode is to allow the flow of electrical current in one direction only. This is handy if you want to allow current generated from a number of different places to a single point but not to another place. Diodes come in different shapes and sizes. The symbol and direction of current in a diode are shown below.
The basic marking line around a cylindrical shaped diode indicates that it is the cathode, the other being the anode. Diodes which are not cylindrical will require a check with the manufacturer to know which end is which. Below are some examples of these. •

With the level of interest that is currently being demonstrated in trips and weekends away, like the upcoming booked-out Kennett River Trip, ‘Round Victoria Adventures’ and also general overnight camp-outs the club has made arrangements with three outdoor stores that will provide terrific benefits to both individual members and the VWCV. These arrangements provide for membership of group schemes with Anaconda Adventure Store in Canterbury Road, Bayswater and all Rays Outdoors stores and a general discount that applies at all Aussie Disposals stores. The deal is:• Aussie Disposals will now give a 10% discount to all VWCV members in any of their Victorian stores on production of the VWCV membership card. Arrangement is now effective. • Anaconda has given me a big supply of their Ultimate Adventure Club membership application forms. All our club members need to do is complete the application and send it off (electronically is OK) to Anaconda. Once processed Anaconda will offer VWCV members various discounts on store brands,
gas refills, rental rates, sales brochures and invitations to their Ultimate Adventure Club events and discount nights. 5% of the value of all member sales is directed to VWCV. • Rays Outdoors has given me a big supply of membership applications, pre-paid return mail envelopes, membership cards and covering information. Again, these will be made available to our members at meetings and all they need to do is complete the application and send it off. Once completed Rays will offer 6.5% discounts to members store wide on all lines, 3.5% of sales back to the club and access to special larger discount programmes. This applies at all Rays stores. Please come and see me at any club meeting for the application forms. If you are already a member of either the Anaconda or Rays schemes it is suggested that you re-apply under the new arrangement and cancel your existing membership so that the club can get the benefit of the % of sales rebate. The club is also planning a very special night at Rays Outdoor Store in Nunawading on Tuesday 11 April 2006. Details appear elsewhere in this magazine. This will be a great opportunity to get product information, gain big discounts on a huge range of outdoor goods and participate in raffles/give aways. Please put this date in your diaries now so you don’t miss out. •

Now, a Really Fast Porsche > From ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’ - 3/2006
For some people, regular Porsches aren't fast enough, which is why cars like this are born. The Porsche GT3 is a high-powered, lightweight version of the 911 that delivers even more grunt for those with a need for speed. The new GT3 is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in August, just three months after it is planned to go on sale in Germany. The price: $253,200. Only 50 will be imported each year. The GT3 was unveiled at last week's Geneva motor show with the fifth-generation 911 Turbo. The new car continues an illustrious tradition of race-bred Porsche models and it uses a reworked version of its predecessor's naturally-aspired 3.6-litre sixcylinder engine tuned to deliver a massive 309kW.
Like earlier GT3 models, the new one has been created to support Porsche's sports car race program. It homologates new mechanical and aerodynamic components to meet the latest FIA GT sports car regulations. However, it's no bare-asbones special. After listening to buyer demands, Porsche has poured greater levels of standard equipment and comfort into the new car. Careful consideration to weight has seen it rise only slightly above that of its predecessor. As these first official photographs reveal, the new GT3 is distinguished from lesser 911 models by a new body kit honed for aerodynamic efficiency in Porsche's Stuttgart-based wind tunnel. It includes a complex front bumper that provides increased cooling for the frontmounted radiators, a prominent two-wing spoiler, centrally mounted tailpipes and a new rear bumper designed to draw hot air away from the rear-mounted engine. A lowered ride height and 19-inch alloy wheels add a menacing touch to the appearance. Inside, it has the latest 911's dashboard and interior trim. There's a thick steering wheel and gear lever - both covered in Alcantara, along with warning lights to indicate the optimum gearshift point.

VW Biwak > ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ - 3/2006 This is one of those cars that makes you stop and say: "Why didn't I think of that?" Thankfully there are companies such as German design house EDAG to have these ideas for us. To create the Biwak, it took a regular Volkswagen Beetle and fitted a wagon roof to it to create more interior space for commercial or family use, although the rough and ready high-riding stance is intended to give the car a workhorse look. EDAG did this experiment on its own and has prepared the business case for VW should the company want to build it (fingers crossed). Best of all, you don't have to worry about getting a scratch on it: the Biwak is deliberately covered in "scratches" thanks to a cracked paint-style surface. "The crinkle finish lends itself to a used look. We are giving the customer the freedom to make full use of the vehicle, dispelling his or her worries about that first, inevitable scratch in the paintwork," says the company PR blurb. "It's just one example of how colour and trim can be employed as marketing instruments." •
Two versions of the GT3 are planned: a standard model with comfort seats and an entertainment system as well as a circuitorientated Clubsport model with hard shellseats, six point harnesses, lightened door trims, a bolt-in rollcage, fire extinguisher and a battery cut out. At 1395kg, the new GT3 weighs 15kg more than its predecessor. This translates to a weight to power weight ratio of just 4.57kg/kW and, according to Porsche's own acceleration figures, a 0-100kmh time of 4.3 seconds - half a second quicker than the old GT3. A more telling indication of its performance, however, is the 0-160kmh time of just 8.7 seconds and 310kmh top speed, bettering the old model by 0.6 seconds and 8kmh. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with
slightly shorter travel than in the standard 911 and a fully mechanical limited slip differential. Underpinning it all is a heavily upgraded McPherson strut (front) and multilink (rear) suspension fitted for the first time with Porsche Active Suspension Management. It gives the choice between two damper settings. The standard one closely matches the previous model's; the sport mode is tuned to deliver greater body control and a more responsive throttle action. General Meeting Mini Auctions > By Andrew Ermel Every General Meeting from now on will feature a ‘mini’ auction after the first break. Those who came to the last General Meeting had the opportunity to buy some very desirable VW bits and pieces on offer. These items included an oval Beetle steering wheel, hard to obtain books, car models and some rare memorabilia. The idea of the mini auction is to give you the opportunity to sell items to club members rather than having to advertise them. You can view the items during the break and speak to the potential sellers and buyers. Because it is an auction, it gives everyone a fair go at buying items. Also the club benefits if the item exceeds the seller’s reserve price. How does it work? If you have any bits and pieces that you want to sell, bring them along to the general meeting. The items must be small enough to be carried, reasonable condition and above all, clean. There will be a maximum of six items per mini auction. If more than six items are to be auctioned, the auction will be limited to one item per seller. You set the price you want for the item, and this becomes the reserve - and what you receive from the sale. The item is then auctioned to the members during the meeting. If the item fails to reach the reserve, it is withdrawn
from sale. If the item exceeds the reserve price, you get the reserve amount and the club get the remainder as a form of a donation. Also you may have something of value that you wish to donate to the club for auction, and the club would be most appreciative. So get those surplus items and make yourself some money. Remember the items can be of anything of interest to other club members. •

Kennett River Weekend > By Matt Kinsey The VWCV held its annual camping trip to Kennett River over the weekend of March 3rd to 5th. Each year this event seems to get more and more popular, with nearly 80 people rocking up with their VWs this year. It was really a weekend to chill out - people could come and go as they pleased. The weather was spectacular - we spent many hours at the beach (in the water too!). It was amazing to see virtually everybody in the surf with their body boards. Unlike previous years, everybody did not cruise down the Great Ocean Road in one large group. Many people were keen to get to Kennett River as early as possible, with some people arriving Thursday, most on Friday, and a few on Saturday. The VWCV represented at least half the campers in the caravan park. The Kennett River Caravan Park was a very lush and serene place to camp, with lots of wildlife. There were heaps of possums, ducks and a few randy koalas who kept some people on their toes during the night. Most people opted for camping in tents, while a small number had cabins. On Saturday morning a small contingent headed up to Apollo Bay to get some breakfast (and real coffee) and to buy some supplies for lunch and dinner, as well as visiting the local Saturday market. Saturday night was glow-worm night. Many of us packed into Red Bus and the high roof Kombi for the trek up into the Otways to check out the glow worms. The road up into the National Park was a
little more off-road than I imagined, but the Kombis handled the treacherous road with no problems. As usual with these events, an excellent level of catering was provided by the Club with lunch and dinner on the Saturday being provided, as well as breakfast on the Sunday morning. A huge variety of food was on offer - it was much more than just a sausage in a piece of bread! Special thanks should go to the Ermels and in particular Cheryl for their outstanding efforts over the weekend in making this possible (as well as the many other members who pitched in and helped out with the serving of the food). Thanks should also go to the Kennett River Caravan Park for their excellent hospitality over the weekend. •
