Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the May edition of the Wagensville News. This month, we hope, you should receive your magazine well before the General Meeting as we have brought forward the deadline by one week. It may not be as up to date with the latest events etc. but we believe that receiving it prior to the meeting is the priority. We will see how this works out and please give us your feedback. The VWCV’s web site www.vwclub.com.au is continuing to be updated thanks to club member David Holinger with the motor sports and membership sections now current. Thanks also to Jon, Matt and Ross for your assistance. The classifieds section still needs some attention in regard to how to efficiently manage them. We need to discuss this at the May General Meeting. The post card competition closed at the April meeting and we received 6 entries. The decision was reached by the committee and the winner is Cheryl Ermel for her wonderful post card picture of a large range of the club members vehicles, even if some of the vehicles colours have changed! Congratulations Cheryl and to all the other people who submitted entries. All of the
entries are shown in this month’s magazine. It has been decided that participation prizes will be awarded to all people submitting entries. Cards will now be printed and forwarded to all Volkswagen dealers throughout Victoria. The Jamboree held at Caribbean Gardens on the 17th April was a great success with a large number of members attending, possibly encouraged by the wonderful weather on the day. Many thanks to Anthony Surie and Nathan Leversha for their organisation of this annual event. Congratulations must go to Jen Littlechild for her deserving award of three trophies for the day. The month of May promises to be a very exciting one with many events planned. Following the General Meeting on Tuesday 17th May, Paul Blacker has organised a Tech Day on Saturday 21st May at Volkshome in Commercial Drive Thomastown, at which John Goodison will explain the vehicle preparations required prior to a long trip. This is a must for anyone contemplating the “Adventure to the Red Centre”, which John Stevens is organising for 2006. We need to support

these Tech days, as many members keep on asking, “when is the next one?” The last Tech day was not well supported so we need to support it this time. A lot of effort goes into these events with invaluable knowledge gained to all those who attend. For all motorsports fans, Round 3 of the Group 5 Speed Event series will be run by our Club and will be held at the Melton Motor Sports Club complex at Mt Cottrell. Contact Jon Edsell for details. The VWCV Dinner Dance is on the 28th May at the RACV Club. Last year’s event was great and I’m sure that this year’s will also be a great success. This will be followed by the Club Concourse at Point Cook on the Sunday (May 29th). Finally, Round 4 of the Group 5 Motorkhana series will be held by the HSCCV at the Toyota Club Ground at Mc Grath Rd in Werribee. I’ll see you at the May Meeting on Tuesday the 17th. •

Pope's wheels for sale on eBay > Reuters - 5/2005 ROME - A second hand car once said to be registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger the new Pope Benedict - is up for sale on eBay and the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to bidding. The vehicle, a metallic grey 1999 Volkswagen Golf, went up for auction on the German site (www.ebay.de) at a minimum price of 9900 euros ($18,000) on Wednesday and, just over 24 hours and more than 300 bids later, the price had hit one million euros ($1.8 million). German website n-tv.de identified the seller as Benjamin Halbe, 21, from the town of Olpe in Germany's Sauerland region, who said he bought the car from a local dealer in January. "It drives like heaven," the site quoted Halbe as saying. The website of the German newspaper Bild quoted an eBay spokeswoman in Germany as saying the online auctioneer had checked with the vehicle licensing office which had confirmed the name of the original owner was genuine. Ratzinger, who is from Bavaria in southern Germany, has been at the Vatican for more than two decades and is not known to drive. The Vatican was not available for comment on the auction, which closes on May 5 at 7.30pm (5.30am NZT). The auction site describes the vehicle as a two litre petrol-powered manual, with 75,000km on the clock since it was first registered in March 1999. "Does black smoke or white smoke come out of the exhaust pipe?" one posting on the site asked - a reference to the signal used at the Vatican to show whether a new pope has been elected by the secret conclave of cardinals. "Very funny," was the reply.

VWCV 2005 Concourse > Richard Graham - VWCV Club Vice-President It’s that time again! Pull out the polish rags and dust off the spiders. This year we’re heading off to RAAF Base at Point Cook for the VWCV’s annual concourse. I’m hoping to see as many - if not more cars as we had at Scienceworks last year. There are indeed some beautiful cars in this club and it’s good to see them come out of the woodwork for our concourses. This year should provide some beautiful backdrops with the old aeroplane hangers and museum that we will be visiting on the day. This year we have set 12 categories for the show as follows Beetle – pre 1957 Beetle – 1958 to 1967 Beetle – 1968 to 2004 New Beetle – 2000 – 2005 Kombi – T1, T2 Kombi – T3, T4, T5 Type 3 – All years Karmann Ghia – All years Golf – Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 Golf – Mk4, Mk5 Watercooled – all years (Passats, Polos, Audis, etc.) Concourse car of show (Highest scoring car of day).
Being a concourse show cars will be judged on originality. This means the closer the car is to it’s original state of manufacture, the more points it obtains in judging. Any modifications that aren’t made by VW or designed for that year model will bring your score down. There are acceptions, (retractable seat belts for example), but the judge will decide these on the day. Entry for the show is $10 per vehicle for club members only and judging begins at 11am - so make sure your car’s parked and cleaned up by then. I again will be head judge for the day, so I hope to see all of you down at RAAF Base on the 29th of May. If you have any questions please call me on 0418 527 862. •

Hippie Days Ahead > From drive.com.au - 3/2005 Threatening to make legions of old hippies and ageing surfers go weak at the knees, Volkswagen Australia is poised to introduce the modern version of the old Kombi campervan of the flower-power era. It has everything, including the kitchen sink. With unmistakable design links to the early icon Kombis, which date back half a century, the latest version the California comes with the latest mod cons and clever packaging. It also benefits from many new-millennium safety features and creature comforts. With the new model, VW Australia is casting its net way further than the Woodstock generation and a few sun-bleached contemporaries of '60s world surfing champ Midget Farrelly. The five-seat luxury motorhome, based on VW's T5 van model launched here last year, will be aimed squarely at the booming recreational market. A new Kombi is very big news because of the enduring charm of the tough, goanyplace older models which characterised freedom and romance and remind us of a less intense time. Among a broad age group and demographic, Kombis of the 1960s and 70s are considered very funky transport. Some people can overdo their passion. Stephen Muller of Kombi Rescue in Sydney, a firm specialising in finding and restoring old models, owns 36 of them. Launched in Germany last year, the new luxurious California Comfortline Kombi with 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will be
24
introduced here in the last quarter of 2005/first quarter of 2006, priced from about $90,000. With 128kW five-cylinder turbo diesel and six-speed manual and Tiptronic transmission choices, the luxury camper sleeps four. The versatile commuter/camper is being touted as a 365 days-a-year vehicle capable of carrying five people to work through the week, and then converting to multiple uses during the owner's leisure time. Today's Kombi quickly converts to an overnight camper with gas cooking facilities, and an integrated powered fridge. It also converts, if needed, to an office. Unlike bigger motorhomes, its compact nature facilitates parking in cities and in underground car parks. The layout inside the Kombi is Teutonic, efficient and functional, with kitchen and its row of furniture on the left side, and twin bench seat on the right (this doubles as a
bed), as well as an electro-hydraulic lightweight aluminium pop-up roof to allow occupants to stand up straight. The upper bed measures 2 x 1.2 metres and there's even a swan-necked lamp for bedtime reading. Like a good motorhome should, the VW provides seats, a table (with foldout legs for indoor or outdoor use), outdoor chairs and curtains for privacy and shade. The furniture is aluminium with a corrugated core to save weight. The multipurpose table is stored in the interior cladding of the sliding door and the two folding seats hide in the rear door. Roller blinds ensure privacy in the new California. The fully-lined interior features a rail system for the attachment of different soft furnishings and pockets. Net pouches provide flexible storage and the clever floormounted rails allow flexible seating/storage arrangements. Mosquito nets in fold-up containers guarantee good flow-through ventilation. A cover closes off the sink and cooktop
when not required. The wardrobe and laundry cupboard in the rear are conveniently accessible, opened and closed by a combination of hinged door and Venetian blind. Fresh and waste water tanks each have a capacity of 30 litres. An additional onboard 75Ah battery satisfies the increased power demand. Along with the adhesion of 4Motion allwheel drive, the California Kombi owner gets four-channel anti-lock brakes, anti-skid control system and stability control. Also awaiting the production go-ahead is a cheaper (about $55,000) Kombi Beach version, with a retro fitout. The entry model camper, to be powered by a 96kW turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, sleeps two. It has a choice of six-speed manual or sixspeed Tiptronic auto and buyers will be able to opt for the 4Motion system or two-wheel-drive. •

Adventure to the Red Centre > John Stevens on the VWCV’s upcoming Central Australia trip... The club is planning an epic three week Volkswagen adventure that will commence around fourteen months from now on 17 June 2006 and conclude on 7 July 2006. This will be a major event in the Volkswagen Club of Victoria’s calendar for 2006 and comprises a 5,400 km four wheel VW odyssey (all on well made roads) from Melbourne to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and return. We will travel through such interesting and famous places as Adelaide, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, Yulara, Uluru, Woomera, Hawker and the Flinders Ranges. Accommodation throughout the three weeks will be a mixture of on-site cabins, motel units and camping and there is ample scope for participants to vary the accommodation mix according to personal taste. We plan to cover as many of the famous main Central Australian tourist highlights as we can in the time that is available. There will be the opportunity over the three weeks to see many of the real Australian outback/Red Centre icons and really soak up the incredible and unique atmosphere that exists in this part of our great country. There are, of course, many significant challenges that will be encountered both organising and participating in a trip of this magnitude. These include travelling in convoy, sometimes for up to 10 hours a day, over 5,400 kms, and the challenge of maintaining effective communication and mutual support over extensive travelling distances and the remote-
ness and isolation of much of the country north of Port Augusta. Bearing this in mind we have decided to restrict the number of cars on the trip to a maximum of 12 to try to minimise our exposure to major problems and difficulties. This will be a real “hands on” four wheel VW adventure where those participating will need to undertake extensive forward planning and preparation of their cars, equipment and travelling kit over the next fourteen months. A very detailed 15 page trip brochure has been prepared and this covers such diverse matters as the proposed daily itinery, background information, travelling arrangements, car preparation, approximate costs and booking arrangements. If you want a copy of the brochure, that includes the trip application form, please let me know and I can email one to you. Alternatively I can post a copy to you if you do not have email facilities. Further information will be available at the April VWCV meeting at the RACV Club.

The VW Club of Victoria is authorised by VicRoads to issue Classic and Historic plates to financial club members with VWs over 25 years old. The main objective of the CH permit system is to enable club members a minimal registration fee because of the vehicles limited usage. The club requires all CH vehicles to undertake a safety check every two years. Safety checks are similar to roadworthy checks. A roadworthy certificate can be accepted in lieu of a safety check. The appointed club technical officers conduct safety checks at Tech Days and by appointment. A safety check ensures that the CH plate vehicle is safe to drive on club gazetted events and approved limited usage. It also encourages the maintenance, restoration and preservation of all types of VWs.
