Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President After a big Cup Day weekend for the lucky VWCV members who took part in the 4-Day Cruise around Victoria, we now have the run up to Christmas. I believe the 4-Day Cruise was fantastic and a credit to the organisational skills of Ross Woolley. But don’t take my word for it; talk to the members who participated in the cruise. Ross continues to excel in the planning of these events and very special thanks must go once again to Ross. Our next big event this year is the annual “Day of the Volkswagen” on Sunday 27th November at the Yarra Glen Racecourse. Entry prices remain the same as last year: Entry $6 Show cars (Club Members) $10 (Includes 2 people per car) Show cars (Non Members) $20 (Includes 2 people per car) Trophies will be awarded for both first and second places, while this year a metal medallion will also be awarded for third place. A raffle will be held on the day with great prizes. 1st Prize - One night’s (double) accommodation at the RACV Club in the City donated by the RACV Club; 2nd Prize - One night’s (double) accommodation at the RACV Club at Healesvilledonated by the RACV Club; 3rd Prize - Limited edition of the book “VW in Australia - The Forgotten Story”donated by Rod Davies; 4th Prize - Herbie DVD - donated by the VWCV. This event does need Club members to assist on the day so we can spread the load. In this way everyone enjoys the day. People wishing to help who haven’t already indicat-

General Meeting Mini Auctions > By Andrew Ermel Every General Meeting from now on will feature a ‘mini’ auction after the first break. Those who came to the last General Meeting had the opportunity to buy some very desirable VW bits and pieces on offer. These items included an oval Beetle steering wheel, hard to obtain books, car models and some rare memorabilia. The idea of the mini auction is to give you the opportunity to sell items to club members rather than having to advertise them. You can view the items during the break and speak to the potential sellers and buyers. Because it is an auction, it gives everyone a fair go at buying items. Also the club benefits if the item exceeds the seller’s reserve price. How does it work? If you have any bits and pieces that you want to sell, bring them along to the general meeting. The items must be small enough to be carried, reasonable condition and above all, clean. There will be a maximum of six items per mini auction. If more than six items are to be auctioned, the auction will be limited to one item per seller. You set the price you want for the item, and this becomes the reserve - and what you receive from the sale. The item is then auctioned to the members during the meeting. If the item fails to reach the reserve, it is withdrawn

from sale. If the item exceeds the reserve price, you get the reserve amount and the club get the remainder as a form of a donation. Also you may have something of value that you wish to donate to the club for auction, and the club would be most appreciative. So get those surplus items and make yourself some money. Remember the items can be of anything of interest to other club members. •

VW Has Proton Plans > From carsguide.com.au - 10/2005 A plan to bring cheaper Volkswagens to Australia is not dead yet. The German giant pitched a plan at the start of this year that would see Malaysian carmaker Proton build Volkswagen cars for the Proton is locked in debate about the deal, which would see VW buy a large number of company shares. VW brand group chairman Wolfgang Bernhard, is waiting for Proton's decision. "We made offers, we made proposals, but it needs to be worked out from their side," Bernhard says. If the plan proceeds, Proton may be commissioned to build other models, including the medium-sized Passat. As it stands, all Volkswagen models are imported from Europe. VW Australia experimented with a small Polo sedan from China, but sales were poor and the company will not order any more. While VW was in the middle of negotiations to buy a share of Proton, Porsche bought about 20 per cent of shares in VW, giving it the majority share.

Bernhard says some shareholders are concerned Porsche will take advantage of VW, using its technology and low production costs. He says VW will draw up a contract with Porsche to ensure this doesn't happen. Porsche and VW have worked together previously, including the development of the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg Offroaders, using the same base to save costs. "We are going to do business as we have in the past with Porsche, but it will be at arm's length as it would with any third party," he says. Bernhard was in Sydney last week for the launch of the Polo GTi, a $26,990 hot hatch. He thinks the car is an alternative for drivers who want good performance, but are sick of paying the fuel bills for bigger engines. The Polo GTi has a 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with 110kW. •

New European Number Plates... VicRoads has recently released a new type of number plate called 'Euro Plate.’ These plates have a similar layout and dimensions to the number plates made in Europe thereby making them ideal for European cars such as the ones owned by VWCV members. These plates complete your cars European feel, especially since the plate dimensions suit the car design. To mark the release of the 'Euro Plate' a special offer has been prepared for VWCV members. This promotion provides a 10% discount for all members who order the Euro-Plates through your club. This would mean that a standard Euro Plate would cost $355.50 (normally $395) and a personalised Euro Plate would cost $625.50 (normally $695). Contact VicRoads for details... •

Electrons in the Car > Everything you wanted to know about your car’s battery by Bernd Wachs... The function of the battery in the car is to supply electrical energy required for various car components such as distributors, lights, windscreen motors, engine management systems, fans etc. It can also supply power for people’s individual requirements such as radios, TVs, CD players, the K-thumper machine, safety lights, fridges, electric winches etc. The right type of battery should be chosen so that the appropriate energy requirements can be met. Here is my simple but not definitive guide on battery choices. If you have a car which has a petrol carburetor, does not have an electronic management system, and you just drive it reasonable regularly then the normal size battery is usually good enough. If your car has an engine management system then buy the largest battery that you can fit safely in the battery compartment. The reason I say this is that as the vehicle’s electronics and connected gadgets increase, the amount of energy is drained from the battery and the system. The more a lead acid battery is discharged and kept in a discharged state the more you shorten its life. Car batteries are further divided into two groups. The first is a cranking type and the other is deep cycle. The cranking style battery is designed to supply a large amount of current in a short time for devices such as starter motors. This battery usually has a larger number of plates but they are usually of thinner construction. The second type is a deep cycle battery which is designed to supply a reasonable amount of current but

over a much longer period of time. This type of battery has usually fewer but thicker plates. The average life of a normal car lead acid battery is between 2 to 3 years. If you get 4 years you are doing well, anything above that is exceptional. It is also recommended that you boost charge the car battery on a regular basis, 2 to 3 months, using a battery charger. This should only require a couple of hours. You can usually tell when the battery is charged when the meter indicates less than 1 ampere is being supplied, or there are one or two light bars lit up on the battery charger. Batteries come in different voltages and current ratings. Car batteries are usually 12 volts these days but some cars ran on 6 volts. Others can also run on 24 volts. A battery is made up of a number of individual cells joined in series. Therefore a 6 V battery contains 3 cells in series, a 12 V battery contains 6 cells. When we say that we have a 12 V battery this does not mean that it works at 12 V, it normally works at about 13.8 V which is maintained by the alternator / generator in the car. When the engine is off the battery voltage level drops down to about 12.8 volts. When a battery is discharged the battery voltage drops down to about 10.5 volts. The battery voltage should not be used as a definite indication on how healthy a battery is, but as a guide. The true indication of a battery’s health is done using a hygrometer which will be covered later in another episode.

Battery terminal corrosion Another major problem that affects car electrics is corrosion. It's that white powder that decides to congregate around the battery terminal and the cable connector to annoy you at the most inconvenient time. This problem can be reduced with a little work. Firstly disconnect the cable/connector from the battery and clean it off with a wire brush. Make sure that none of the powder gets into the battery liquid. Now that has been removed mix in a bowl water with BiCarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda) and wipe it over the battery terminal, cable and the connecter. This will need to be done a couple of times. Remember to wear your safety glasses and chemical gloves. When the bubbling/ fizzing has stopped give it a final wash with water. Let it dry. Make sure that none of the cleaning liquid mixes with the battery acid. To minimise the corrosion returning go and get the vaseline. What is good for the baby's b.. is good for the battery terminals, and give it a light coating. Use a brush to make sure that the connecter and any exposed cable gets a thin coating all over. Reconnect the cable to the battery and things should work better. It is a good idea to apply a thin coating before the corrosion starts. I hope this makes things a little clearer now about batteries. More information about batteries later. Next month we will cover another device that an electron has to pass through in its life as an electrical worker. •

Heading to Day of the Volkswagen this year?

PS I am a happy little battery supplying your car with electrical energy. I need my fluid levels checked regularly. Which needs to be topped up from the Distillery. All the billion trillion electrons I supply for you. Need to be replaced by the generator or by you. Since my life is very short compared with thee. So please extend my life by taking care of me.
