Presidentʼs Report Hard to believe its June already and we are well into the Melbourne winter. Not that its really been that cold so far so, and certainly not so bad that we have to keep those air-cooled dubs tucked up in the garage. We have a bit of a quiet period for VW club events during June with the only official club event being the June general meeting. But we do have an unofficial VW based outing on Wednesday the 22nd June. This is International Drive your VW to Work Day. This world wide event was started as Drive your VW Beetle to work day many years ago and still has a strong following today as Drive your VW to Work day. No preparation is required. You just drive your VW, Air or Water Cooled to your normal place of work on the 22nd of June. To make it a little more fun, how about taking a photo of your VW in some work related situation on the 22nd and email it to the club with a couple of lines of explanation. The most unusual photo received will secure the club member a prize, that will be presented at the July General meeting. Sept AGM & Committee positions. The club Annual General Meeting is still over 3 months away, but its a perfect time to start canvassing the club membership for new committee members, or for any club member who is thinking about a committee position to find out a little more about it. The new club rules and club constitution is now located on our club web site. The duties of the key elected committee member positions are detailed in the club by-laws document. In relation to other other committee positions its worth having a chat to the current position holder and get an idea of what's required. If you keen to get involved please feel free to talk to myself or any of the current committee members to find out a bit more about it. New blood and fresh ideas are an absolute must in any club committee in order to keep the club strong.
Day of the VW preparations are progressing nicely. We are a few weeks ahead of things compared to previous years. We are currently seeking minor event sponsorships and traders interest by sending out traders and sponsors packs. If you know of an organisation or business that may be interested in the Day of the VW please let me know and I will send them out a pack. We aim to have a lot more traders this year, ensuring that you all have plenty of VW stuff to spend your VW dollars on. Xmas in July is getting closer and this year we will be heading down to Barwon Park House in the historic town of Winchelsea,(Just past Geelong). Pre bookings are required before the 10th of July. See advert in the newsletter for more details. Next general meeting is on Thursday the 16th of June at the Royal Standard Hotel. The evenings activity will be "Bring and Brag". For those of you who haven't attended a Bring and Brag evening, its an opportunity to bring along your favorite bit of VW memorabilia, rare VW parts or Accessories or even a whole rare VW and tell the group all about it. Best Bring and Brag item will be determined by the club clap-O-meter and a nice little prize will be awarded. See you all at the Royal Standard on the 16th. Dean Holden - VWCV President

engine. It delivers a sturdy 77kW of turbocharged power and 250Nm of torque. While its common rail technology, diesel particulate filter and optimised 5 - speed manual transmission help increase fuel economy and cut emissions. Techonology - Start / Stop Technology The innovative Start/Stop System automatically stops the engine when you come to a standstill, cutting back on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And all it takes to resume driving is engaging/depressing the clutch.
Someone thought it was a good idea to get up early Saturday morning and meet at 4.30 at Kalkallo! So we did just that. Three vehicles then headed off, one with trailer – Chris Davies in his GTI Golf 4 with his brother Peter and their mate Dean Seeley, Andrew and Stuart Ermel and the hamburgler Mike Cronin in the Ermelʼs T4 TDI twin cab, and Lloyd Davies, John Goodison and John Stevens in the Volkwerke T5 Ute, towing the trailer carrying a ʼ79 Mark 1 Golf to show. On the way to Sydney we stopped at Goulburn for lunch and to spend three hours watching the VW Sydney Club motor racing event at Wakefield Park. The racing was entertaining – no spills this year – then we headed for Parramatta. For dinner we were spoiled for choice along the main foodie strip. After dinner and our long day, we were happy to crash at the hotel. Next morning, we hit the road early and headed for Fairfield Showgrounds. Thanks to Boris from Volkscare we had a trade stand to use as our base. This show is very lively even at an early hour, with a great show of traders and swappers and gradually a great array of VWs turned up to participate. Early morning coffee and egg and bacon rolls got us started for a busy time sorting through the huge variety of parts and accessories on offer. This event always has the best trade stands and swap stalls. Mike Cronin generously offered to mind the shop and consequently has been complaining ever since that he missed out on the best parts. The rest of the party made the most of the opportunities available and the vehicles returning to Melbourne were rather heavier than on the way up. The Sydney show is a very well organised event and a credit to those involved. There was lots to see and do, a great range of cars, young and old, and I would recommend to VWCV members to attend next year if they have the chance. On Sunday evening we gathered for drinks and snacks in one of our hotel rooms. Then some went elsewhere for drinks and others went to Hooters for a feed and a laugh. Monday morning we headed for North Sydney to visit one of the Sydney-based major parts suppliers that most VW repairers use. We poked our noses around their merchandise, discovering new lines and buying parts we needed. It was great to be able to meet the staff whom we generally only know over the telephone. We departed Sydney about 10.30 for an uneventful, swift trip back to Melbourne just stopping for fuel and food along the way, and arriving home in the evening having had a great weekend and ready to start work next morning. VWCV Historian Corner ~ June 2011 This is another edition in the series of articles on the history of the club in special instalments within current versions of the Wagensville News. The Historian is currently seeking information from some of the long serving current members to capture the very beginnings of the club. So if you have any information of the club in past years or you have any old copies of Wagensville news I could borrow or have I would be very grateful. ………….in June 1982 Jon Edsell was President with Tony Barton - Secretary and Vice President. The Wagensville News cover was a hand drawn image of a flat four air cooled motor with twin Weber 40 DCNs – a far cry from the Deluxe version we have today! Again the motorsport and social side of the club featured prominently with a great VWCV motorkhana at Berwick Airport and Navmaker (Inter Club) Series which was a simple (?) navigation run using the Broadbents 150 km around Melbourne. There was a Dinner at the Eltham Barrel with an all up cost of $13.50 inc Dinner and Drinks – Wow! $13.50 does not buy what it used too. The Club Service Directory held 31 businesses supporting VWCV and its members, with Wolfsburg Automotive having two locations; 31 Waverly Rd, near the Princes Hwy for New parts and 662 Sydney Rd Coburg for New and Second Hand Parts (……remember those days Gary!).

………….in June 1970 David Mitchell was President with Dave Evans - Vice President, John Mayo as Secretary and Kevin Hurford as Magazine Editor. The Club was getting very excited about the 1st National Bug In at Albury NSW on the Queens Birthday Holiday that year. The rivalry with South Australia was strong as ever with the event co-organised with VWCV, VW Club of SA, the Formula Vee Association and the Albury and Districts Car Club. The SA – Vic VW Club trophy was up for grabs and it appeared to be hotly contested (I must find out where this trophy is … here or the other side). Motorkhanas were very popular and 10 Pin Bowling was a hit! (….sorry) with David Evans leading the Gents Championship on 1191 points! The club welcomed four new members - three 1200 Beetles and one 1600 TS Fastback, all black and white registration plates – no personalised plates available! Still looking for old photos and information of club activities, particularly the Day of the Volkswagen as we need more material to put on a display at this yearʼs DOTVW at Yarra Glen. If you can help me out please catch me a meeting or event coming up or see another member of the committee. Until then, enjoy your VW! Regards, Chris Scane- VWCV Club Historian
