PLENTY TO PLAY FOR IN 2013 DAVID PENROSE

A

fter a long off-season, the Volleyball South Australia 2013 State League season hits off this weekend, in what promises to be an exciting year for Volleyball in the state. The 2012 State League season produced some high quality Volleyball, and in extremely competive leagues the Premier side came from second spot in both the men’s and women’s competitions. A year after going through the season undefeated, Norwood’s men were defeated by Mt Lofty in the Grand Final despite finishing first. While in the women’s, USC Lion came from second spot to secure a sixth consecutive title with victory over Mt Lofty. With Mt Lofty and USC Lion the hunted in their respective leagues, their rivals have hit back with solid pre-seasons and strenghthening of their squads.

The result is a host of teams that are capable of pushing for top honours, as the calibre of the State League rises to a new level.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2pm)

NORWOOD vs HENLEY

A clash between two 2012 finalists headlines round one of the men’s competition, with the Norwood Bears taking on the Henley Hawks. Norwood lost only four times on their way to the minor premiership in 2012, with two of those losses inflicted by the Hawks. The Bears will be looking for a better start to 2013, after stumbling to 1-3 after four weeks last season as they defended their 2011 premiership. Norwood will be keen to ammend for their Grand Final loss, but Henley will be just as hungry after succumbing to Mt Lofty a week earlier in the preliminary final. RECENT MEETINGS: RD 15, 2012

MATCH OF THE ROUND (FRIDAY 7pm)

MT LOFTY vs SOUTH ADELAIDE

USC Lion continued their six-year reign of the women’s competition in 2012, but their rivals continued to close the gap. Mt Lofty took out the minor premiership, but were unable to hold off the second-placed USC in the Grand Final, losing a five-set contest. South Adelaide were the next closest side, but lost to Mt Lofty on four occasions, including in the preliminary final. With a new coach, 2012 Men’s Premiership winning coach Tony Scott, the Mt Lofty women will be looking to get their season off to a strong start against a team that will again be around the mark once more in 2013.

Growing the game North DAVID PENROSE he growth of Volleyball north of the city continues in 2013, with the Northern Knights increasing their participation in the State League. The Knights, in their third year in the competition, will increase their quota of teams to five as they field a Women’s reserve team for the first time, as well as a second division one men’s side. The goal for the Knights is to lay the foundation for a possible inclusion into the State League from 2014. And the Knights showed plenty of improvement last season, as their division one women’s side narrowly missed out on a berth in the finals. The continual growth of the game in the Northern suburbs goes beyond the Knights’ State League teams, with last year’s successful launch of the Northern Junior League for players aged under 19.

T

The Knights open their 2013 reserves campaign with men’s and women’s clashes against Austral (Friday night) and Norwood (Saturday) over the weekend.
