he Junior League grading tournament was held across two venues last weekend, with the season proper fast apporaching. Below are some photos from the events held at Brighton Secondary School and Mt Lofty Sports Centre.

Lion faced a danger game, coming up against an Austral side which has added plenty of talent as it looks to improve on last season’s fourth place finish.
But USC were ready for the challenge, establishing a twoset lead, before overcoming Austral in a tight third set to win 3-0. With the inclusions of Beth Carey, Cathy Carey, Sheena Peters, and Karola Laventure returning from round two onwards, Phoenix look set to test more opponents this season, and it showed on Saturday that they got better as the game went on. On Friday night, South Adelaide knocked off men’s reigning premier Mt Lofy in a four-set tussle. After dropping the first set, Mt Lofty hit back, with class and plenty of aggression, to level proceedings.
But South Adelaide recovered, as they put in a committed

defensive performance to extend points and force the 2012 premiers into errors. It marked the second consectuive season South had defeated Mt Lofty in a seasonopener. In the women’s opener, Mt Lofty cruised to a 3-0 victory over South in the perfect preparation for their round two grand final rematch with USC. Souths’ opponent in round two, Norwood, got off to a mixed start. The Bears men’s side dropped the first set against Henley before storming back to win in four sets. Henley were impressive, taking the first set 25-22 and pushing last year’s losing grand finalists all game. But Norwood prevailed in a tight contest, coming up with the big plays when they mattered most. Harrison Peacock was impressive for Norwood, while Casey Grice was prominent for the Hawks. However, the Norwood Bears women’s side dropped a tight five-set contest against Henley. It was a great start for Henley, after their women went
through the 2012 season winless.
Zina Stone led the way, as Henley held on to take the game with a 15-13 final set victory. In the women’s reserves competition, the Northern Knights made a promising debut, pushing Norwood to five sets.

Two sides that began their season with promising victories clash to open round two on Friday night at Brighton Secondary School. Norwood dominated their match-ups with South Adelaide last season, but South will be full of confidence after defeating the reigning premiers in round one. South, well served by Elliot King in their victory over Mt Lofty, will look for big contributions from Luke Bonser if they are to defeat a second 2012 grand finalist in as many weeks. Norwood were impressive last weekend, recovering from a set down to defeat Henley. The Bear’s front row came up with some big plays, as Norwood finished on the right side of a close contest. USC LION vs MT LOFTY
The first grand final rematch of the season. It may only be the second round of the season, but USC Lion will look to show that nothing has changed, while Mt Lofty will be keen to avenge defeat in last year’s decider. USC Lion are coming off an impressive win, against an Austral side which has built an extremely strong squad in 2013. While it will take Austral some time to gel, Lion put in a strong performance with Rebecca Reeve performing well. Mt Lofty also got their season off on the right foot, accounting for South Adelaide in straight-sets.
