PERFECT:Four teams remain undefeated after round two.

F

our sides remain perfect after two rounds of State League action - with the undefeated USC men and women joined by Norwood’s men and the women from Henley. The Lion women improved their record to 2-0 by overcoming Mt Lofty 3-1 in a rematch of last year’s grand final at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday.

Lion breezed through the first set 25-12, before building a two set advantage as they took a tight second set 29-27 - the highest scoring set of the League season so far.

But Mt Lofty gained confidence after pushing the reigning premiers, reeling off the first eight points of the third set en route to 25-8 victory. USC held on in a stunning fourth set turnaround, themselves winning the first seven points of the set, as they went on to complete a four-set victory. Emma McEwen performed well for Lion, as they overcame a Lofty challenge led by Hannah Ross.

female counterparts, joining them with a 2-0 record as they recovered from a set down to defeat 2012 premiers Mt Lofty.

Nick Arnold continued his early-season form, as Lion claimed a 3-1 victory. With the win, Lion set up a top of the table clash with Norwood in round three, after the Bears defeated South Adelaide on Friday night at the Brighton Secondary School. Norwood built on their round one victory over Henley, as South struggled to match the Bears for intensity. Tomas West led from the front for the Bears, as they claimed a 3-1 victory. Setter Chris Gosling performed well for South Adelaide, which won the second set but was unable to defeat its second 2012 grand finalist in the opening fortnight of the season.

In a double-blow, Souths’ women slumped to 0-2 for the season as Norwood opened their women’s account with a four-set victory. In the other league games, Henley swept Austral in both the men’s and women’s.

In the process, the Henley women advanced to 2-0 - a

year after going winless.

Maddie Wakefield was dominant for the Hawks, as they recovered from two sets down to keep Austral winless in 2013. Henley’s men were also forced to fight hard, eventually defeating a determined Austral outfit 3-1.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2pm)

NORWOOD vs USC LION

A top of the table clash, between the last remaining undefeated sides, headlines the men’s competition in round three. Perennial contenders Norwood have started the season well, overcoming Henley and South Adelaide in four-set battles. But it is Lion that despite finishing fourth last season have suprised some with their 2-0 start - which included a come from behind victory over reigning premiers Mt Lofty in round two. Nick Arnold has been in early-season form for Lion. The Bears will pose a challenge for Lion, with captain Tomas West impressing in last week’s victory over South, and Harrison Peacock also set to play a key role in this contest. Norwood defeated USC in two of their three clashes in 2012, with each side securing a victory from two sets down. RECENT MEETINGS: RD 12, 2012

U

SC Lion have made a promising start to the State League season, undefeated in three competitions. Amongst the undefeated outfits are the men’s league side, who face the Norwood Bears in a top of the table clash. After six-years of the women hogging the limelight, USC men will look to continue their undefeated start to the season and build on last year’s fourth place finish. Lion last won the men’s premiership in 2006.

V

olleyball South Australia farewelled three integral members of their staff last Friday. Leaving VSA were Ashley Camac, Paul Chapman and Simon Phillips. Ashley was with VSA for two years as Senior Competition & Marketing Manager. Paul filled the Youth Coordinators role, while Simon was heavily involved for many years, in the capacity of coaching, refereeing and junior state teams.

MEN’s PREMIERS: USC Lion MEN’s BEST & FAIREST: Brad Tutton

Third versus fifth may not have match of the round written all over it, but plenty rides on this game with Austral staring down the barrel at an 0-3 start and Mt Lofty at risk of losing touch with the top sides. The season may be in the early stages, but with sides like Henley much improved, early wins are still very important as not to lose touch. As is, an Austral win in this contest, and wins by the top two in their repsective contests would see a two-game gap between second and third place and ground to be made up. With the likes of Hannah Ross and Anna Maycock up against Beth Carey, both sides will be confident they can bounce back from indifferent starts to the season.
