Tennessee and UAB are meeting for the fourth time since 1998, with the Vols owning a 3-0 series edge. UT won the most recent game 35-3 in 2008.

Tennessee is coming off a 31-17 loss to the previously 10th-ranked Florida Gators at Neyland Stadium and has a chance to even its record at 2-2.

UAB earned a wild 34-33 victory against Troy, courtesy of a last-play 44-yard touchdown reception by Jackie Williams.

Tennessee Media Policies The following is a list of media policies for the 2010 Tennessee football season. Members of the media are expected to adhere to these policies, as they are put in place to allow student-athletes adequate time to devote to their school work and their team commitments. It should be noted that true freshmen will not be available for interviews.

Interviews with Derek Dooley and the assistant coaches should be coordinated through Associate AD Jimmy Stanton. All player interview requests should be made through Associate SID John Painter or Graduate Assistant Andrew Lentz at least 24 hours in advance.

The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center is for studentathletes and Tennessee Athletics staff and members of the media should not be in the facility (outside of scheduled practices) unless by appointment through the office of media relations. All post-practice interviews will take place on Haslam Field, or in the case of an indoor practice, insde the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.

A working space for media is available in Stokely Athletics Center adjacent to the media relations office.

Coach and Player Interview Opportunities

 Game Day All Tennessee post-game press conferences will be held in the Stokely Family Media Center, located in the northwest corner of Neyland Stadium near Gate 25. The press conference will begin with head coach Derek Dooley 10-15 minutes after each home game. Coach Dooley will be followed by selected players. A member of the Tennessee Media Relations staff will escort all media down to the media center when there are five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Sundays Game highlights from the previous day’s contest are available from the Derek Dooley show from 9-10 a.m. A system test will be made at 8:45 a.m. and there is no programming on open dates. Please credit IMG College/Vol Network for video use.

Head coach Derek Dooley will be available each Sunday evening for a teleconference beginning at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the previous game. Interested media should dial (212) 812-4494. In our weekly chat with the always colorful senior Chris Walker, the defensive end talks about his game day routines such as eating habits, music, and more.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

C.J. Leak • QB • 2002-04

C.J. Leak (2002-04), a native of Charlotte, N.C., played quarterback at Tennessee from 2002-04 after transferring from Wake Forest. We caught up with the former standout in this week’s edition of “Where are they now?” and spoke with him about his time at Tennessee and what he’s up to now.

Q: What did you do after college and what are you doing now for a living?

A: “After school, I was out for a year. I went down to Florida and did some graduate assistant work down there. I was trying to catch on somewhere from a football aspect because I wanted to get into coaching. With my brother (Chris) being down there and a new coaching staff coming in, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to work with him and help him out a bit because we never got to play together. It helped Urban (Meyer) and those guys out out with the transition because they had a bunch of new guys coming in. I bounced around on the practice squad with Buffalo and Tampa still trying to play and then I had an opportunity to get into scouting in the summer of 2008 (with the Bills). I always liked the scouting aspect of it, and I took the opportunity to learn and add it to my repertoire as far as that’s concerned. I did pro scouting for two years and now I’m doing the college scouting for BLESTO.” Q: What game sticks out to you the most from your college career?

A: “Beating Miami (Fla.) down there. We were so jacked up for that game. They had a ton of guys getting drafted.

There were a lot of people doubting us from earlier in the season because of the Georgia game. That was such a redemptive moment. Guys made plays. We had a ball on the sidelines and we had a ball when we got back to Knoxville. That was probably my favorite game during my time there. It was so big as far as a redemptive moment for all of us involved.”

Q: What was your favorite thing about playing at Tennessee?

A: “We had an unbelievable stadium and unbelievable coaches. Doing scouting now, you realize how fortunate you are with the facilities. It’s amazing how when you’re young, you take so many little things for granted. You start realizing a lot of things. Coach Fulmer was an unbelievable coach and had an unbelievable staff. Those guys are still around. I make my runs now in the college ranks and if I see any of them it’s like a homecoming or reunion of some sort.”

FRESHMAN FOCUS with Justin Hunter WR • Virginia Beach, Va. • Arts & Sciences Q: What was something you didn’t know about UT until you got here on your visit?

JH: “I didn’t know how packed the crowds would be, and the atmosphere is so great.”

Q: How exciting was your first catch (a 31-yard reception vs. Oregon) and what does that do for your confidence?

JH: “The catch for me was very exciting. I didn’t think I was going to be able to get it. Now that I have the nerves out of my way, I think I’ll be ready for more.”

Q: Talk about your experience at the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships.

JH: “That was a one-of-a-kind experience. I was really excited to have a chance to go there and meet people from other countries and learn more about their cultures. It was really exciting. It was impressive for me, but I think I could’ve placed higher (Hunter finished sixth in the long jump). I was just having fun being there.”

Q: What ultimately made you come to UT? JH: “The coaching change and one of the track coaches I know was going to be here too. After learning his background and understanding what UT was all about, I knew this was the place for me. Also, Coach Charlie Baggett had a great influence. He had a home visit and he talked to me, what he’s been through, who he’s coached and the teams he’s worked for. I thought it was very interesting.”

Q: What is something about you that not many people would know?

JH: “They named me ‘Bones’ when I got here because I’m the skinniest person on the team!”

CW: “I really can’t eat on game day. I try to get up in the mornings when we go to breakfast and eat something but I really can’t. I basically go the whole day without eating. My stomach doesn’t settle easy with food on game day so I try not to eat. As far as music, I listen to a little rap to get me hyped up and then I listen to gospel right before to calm me down. I always have to get my right ankle taped first. I don’t know why. I guess I don’t feel comfortable getting my left ankle taped first.”

Neyland coached his first game in 1926, leading the Vols to a 13-0 triumph over CarsonNewman, the first of many. • Cedric Houston (2001-04) & Gerald Riggs (2002-05: One of just 14 running back duos to both rush for over 100 yards in the same game, doing so vs. La. Tech in ‘04.

Houston tallied 160 while Riggs added 118.

• Johnny Majors (1954-56): 80-yard TD vs. Mississippi St. was the ninth-longest rushing score in Vols’ history.

• Willie Gault (1979-82): His 174 receiving yards vs. Auburn in 1982 was the 14th highest mark in UT history.

Opening Advantage

Tennessee has been productive early in games this season, outscoring opponents 22-3 in the first quarter. The Vols have struck first on the scoreboard against all three opponents this season, and those points have all been from field goals by senior Daniel Lincoln.

The Vols have also been effective early on defense. They have forced a punt on the opening drive of each game.

LIncoln Moving up the Charts

Senior Daniel Lincoln enters Saturday’s game just six field goals shy of tying John Becksvoort (1991-94) for fifth on the Vols’ career field goal list.

Lincoln has started since his freshman season in 2007, a year he earned All-America honors.

Last week’s capacity crowd at Neyland Stadium (102,455) lifted the Vols’ three-game season average to 101,204, a 2.4 percent increase over last year’s average through three games.

Saturday’s sellout was the first at Neyland Stadium since the 2008 game against Alabama. The Vols host the Crimson Tide this season on Oct. 23.

Oku Crosses 1,000-Yard Mark

In just 15 career games, sophomore David Oku has become a mainstay in the Vols’ kick return game.

With 84 return yards last week against Florida, he became the sixth Vol to surpass to 1,000 kickoff return marker. Oku now has 1,060 yards.

Happy Birthday, Vol Walk

This season, the Tennessee game day tradition of the Vol Walk celebrates its 20th anniversary. Then head coach Johnny Majors started the official Saturday march to Neyland Stadium prior to the Alabama game on Oct. 20, 1990.

In 1989, the team walked unofficially to the games from Bill Gibbs Dormitory. That phenomenon caught on with fans. However, the first publicized and announced Vol Walk did not take place until the Alabama game in 1990.

The start of the Vol Walk has been moved back this year to the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Lake Loudoun Boulevard to allow fans in the C-8 parking area to welcome the team. The team members will then gather at Circle Park, where they will pay homage to the Torchbearer and the spirit of service to others that it represents.

A New Decade

Tennessee has enjoyed its share of success to open every 10-year period, being named national champions in 1940 and 1950. The Vols also won SEC titles in 1940 and 1990.

Nine Vols with Diplomas Ranks Third

As the 2010 season looms, nine Vols will suit up as graduates of Tennessee. Chad Cunningham, Daniel Lincoln, Cody Pope, Nick Reveiz, Jarrod Shaw, Luke Stocker, Victor Thomas, LaMarcus Thompson and Tyler Wolf all earned their college degrees before the 2010 football season.

With nine active graduates slated for action this season, Tennessee is third in the nation behind Boston College (14) and Auburn (11). Kansas State, Virginia Tech and UCF are tied with eight.

Watch Lists

Luke Stocker is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s best tight end. Chris Walker is one of 36 candidates for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.

Among many other awards, Eric Berry won the Jim Thorpe Award last season and was a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski and Lott Trophy awards.

He was also a consensus All-America for a second time.

Win No. 600

The victory over UT Martin marked the Vols’ 600th program win played inside the state of Tennessee.

Of the 600, 429 of those wins have come at Neyland Stadium.

Notes on Offense Rebuilt Line

Center Cody Pope, offensive tackles Dallas Thomas and Ju’Wuan James and offensive guard JerQuari Schofield all made their starting lineup debut in the season opener.

The offensive line has also had to adjust to injuries. Pope was injured and unable to play against Florida, so sophomore Darin Gooch started for the first time at center. True freshman James Stone also received considerable time on the line against the Gators after Schofield left the game with an injury.

Rogers Enters Lineup

In place of injured senior Gerald Jones, sophomore Zach Rogers has started against Oregon and Florida. Taking advantage of increased playing time, he has caught seven passes for 98 yards over the last two games.

Rogers had a career day against Florida, catching four passes for 53 yards, including a 33-yard reception.

Career Highs at QB

Junior Matt Simms overcame a pair of interceptions to post a career day as the Vols’ quarterback.

He passed for 259 yards, easily surpassing his previous best of 181 against UT Martin.

Simms also passed for multiple touchdowns for the first time, finding Denarius Moore on a long 49yard play in the second quarter and Justin Hunter early in the fourth for a 35-yard score.

Moore Touchdowns

With his 49-yard catch and breakaway run into the end zone against Florida, senior wide receiver Denarius Moore has three touchdowns this season, boosting his career total to 12.

Moore, now the Vols’ active career touchdown leader, started seven games and had seven touchdowns as a junior last season. Two of his touchdowns this season have come on plays longer than 40 yards (42 and 49). He also had a 58-yard touchdown run against UT Martin on his third career carry.

Stock(er) Market Rising

Senior tight end Luke Stocker has improved his numbers each season since he began his playing career at UT in 2007 and finishing 2009 with a flurry. In his junior slate, Stocker’s numbers increased by 16 receptions, 250 yards, and five touchdowns.

After posting just three receptions through two games, Stocker had five receptions for 41 yards against Florida.

Third-Season Starters

Stocker and senior fullback Kevin Cooper are entering their third season starting at their respective positions. Including 2010, Stocker has started all 27 games in that stretch, while Cooper has started 21 of them. Jones has started 16 games at wide receiver.

Cooper has developed into a passing option in addition to his usual blocking duties. He has caught six passes for 39 yards in 2010.

Herald Gerald

Although he has been sidelined with a hand injury the last two games, Gerald Jones is approaching the top 10 in two main receiving categories in the UT record books.

With 93 catches under his belt, Jones needs 21 receptions to slide past Lucas Taylor (2005-08) into the top 10 for career receptions. The standout receiver, who has amassed 1,200 receiving yards in three years, can also move into the top 10 in career receiving yards. Donte’ Stallworth (1999-2001) is 10th on the list with 1,747.

Good to Be Home

The Vols had little problem posting high point totals last season at Neyland Stadium and opened the 2010 season posting 50 points in their shutout win against UT Martin.

The Vols have scored at least 30 points in seven of their last 11 home games and have lost only two games at home in Neyland Stadium history when scoring at least 30 points: a 35-31 loss to Georgia in 1973 and a 43-30 loss to Florida in 1984.

Hunter Also a Track Star

Freshman wide receiver Justin Hunter had a busy summer on the track, a sport in which he’s found national success. In June, he won the long jump at the USA Junior National Championships with a leap of 25 feet, 10.75 inches.

Notes on Defense/Special Teams Reveiz Paces Defense & SEC

After his junior season ended earlier than expected due to injury, senior Nick Reveiz made his return to the playing field against UT Martin for the first time since Sept. 26, 2009. The gritty walk-on turned scholarship player has transformed into one of the team leaders on and off the field.

Through three games, Reveiz leads the Vols defense with 25 total tackles, including 1.5 for a loss of five yards.

Against the Gators, the Farragut native had 14 stops to lead all SEC tacklers for the weekend. In addition to that career-high tackle figure, Reveiz also recovered a Florida fumble in the second quarter.

Waggner Emerging on Big Orange D

Sophomore defensive back Prentiss Waggner has established himself as one of the Vols defensive leaders with 19 tackles in three games this season.

Waggner grabbed six tackles against the Gators.

Against Oregon, Waggner set a career-best mark with seven tackles, including one for a loss of three yards.

The Clinton, La., native also recovered a fumble and broke up a pass in the Vols contest with the Ducks.

In the season opener against UT Martin, Waggner intercepted a Derek Carr pass and returned it 54 yards for a Tennessee touchdown.

Freshmen Impact

Eight freshmen have seen time on defense for Tennessee through two games: Eric Gordon, Brent Brewer, Jerod Askew, John Propst, Jacques Smith, Corey Miller, Dontaivs Sapp and Arthur Jeffery.

Through three games, the seven combined for 22 tackles, including three for loss. Smith and Gordon have led the way through two games. Smith, an Ooltewah native, wrapped up six solo tackles, including two for a combined loss of seven yards. Gordon totals seven tackles with one for a three-yard loss.

Teague in Starting Rotation

Marsalis Teague started for the seventh time as a Vol and the second time on defense in the Vols’ loss to Florida. After switching from receiver to cornerback during the off-season, Teague has made an immediate impact and worked his way into the starting rotation. The Paris, Tenn., native has recorded 12 tackles in three games played this season. Teague totaled five tackles against the Gators, including one for a loss.

Keeping Up with Johnson

During his career as a Vol, Austin Johnson has seen action in 21 games. However, the Vols’ lidlifter with UT Martin marked a first for the Hickory, N.C., native, as it was the first time he lined up on the defensive side of the ball.

Through three games, Johnson has collected 10 tackles, including one in the end zone against UT Martin that gave the Vols their first safety since the UCLA game on Sept. 12, 2009.

Johnson leads the Vols in takeaways with two. He stripped the ball from Gators’ tailback Jeff Demps in the loss to Florida and had an interception that ended a UT Martin drive in the third quarter, setting up a touchdown.

Through three games, Hughes boasts nine tackles, 3.5 for loss (total of 10 yards), including a four-yard sack. He has three quarterback hurries and has broken up two pass attempts.

Diamond to Gridiron

Defensive back Brent Brewer is not your typical freshman. He signed a professional baseball contract in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers out of Sandy Creek High School in Georgia, turning his back on a promising football career at Florida State. The second-round draft pick spent five years as a shortstop in the Brewers’ organization.

Now, the former high school wide receiver has found a home at Tennessee as a defensive back, where he currently is slotted at second-string strong safety behind Prentiss Waggner.

Kicking Up a Storm

Senior placekicker Daniel Lincoln is off to a sterling start in 2010. Through three games, Lincoln is five-for-five on field goals and nine-for-nine on PATs. After booting a career-long-tying 49-yard field goal against the Gators, the Ocala, Fla., native lacks just six more field goals to tie John Becksvoort for fifth place on the all-time Vols leaderboard.

In his career as a four year starter at Tennessee, Lincoln has scored 254 points on 116 PATs and 46 field goals. With five points in the Vols contest with Florida, Lincoln closes the gap in the all-time scoring ranking at Tennessee. He currently ranks seventh alltime in career scoring, just 38 points outside of the top five (Alex Walls at 292). Lincoln lacks 22 points to pass legendary Vols tailback Gene McEver for sixth place.

Through two games, Lincoln has scored a teamleading 24 points.

Cunningham Climbing Charts

Chad Cunningham had his best outing of 2010 in the Vols battle with Florida. In that contest, Cunningham averaged a season-best 44.4 yards on five punts. Through three games, Cunningham has punted 17 times, pinning opponents inside the 20 yard line four times and booted a season-long 54-yarder against Oregon.

During his career on The Hill, the Dawsonville, Ga., native has 16 punts for 50 yards or more, including a career-best 58-yarder against Alabama in 2009. His 41.2-yard career average entering the 2010 season is on pace to place Cunningham among the top 10 in Vols history at eighth.

Yards David Oku needs to rank in the top five in all-time career kick return yards

Okuuuuuuuuu! Joins the 1,000 Club

When sophomore tailback David Oku takes the field, he isn’t being booed. Vols fans are simply elongating his last name in support as he zips down the field on one of his stellar kick returns.

Against Florida, Oku surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone with 84 yards on four kickoff returns. He becomes just the sixth Vol to ever surpass 1,000 kickoff return yards.

During his career at Tennessee, Oku has raced to 1,060 yards on 43 kick returns for a 24.7-yard average. Oku lacks just 130 yards from ranking in the all-time top 10 in career yards on total kick returns.

The Midwest City, Okla., native already ranks sixth in career kickoff returns with 42, and his 1,060 career kickoff return yards are also sixth.

Vols Starting Fast

Tennessee’s defense is starting fast out of the gates in 2010.

The Vols have forced opponents to punt on five-of-six of their first possessions of both the first and second halves, allowing just one third quarter field goal to Florida.

Coaching Notes

Head Coach Derek Dooley The Dooley Era Begins

Derek Dooley may own a rival’s pedigree, but to Tennessee fans he felt just like one of their own when the Vols introduced him as the school’s 22nd head coach in January.

Dooley, 42, comes to UT after three seasons as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he also served as athletics director since March 2008. He was the only athletics director serving as head football coach on the FBS level.

Dooley is the youngest son of Georgia legend Vince Dooley, who coached the Bulldogs for 25 seasons and claimed six league crowns and the 1980 national title.

Dooley never accepted the predetermined path to success. He played his college football at Virginia, turning down scholarship offers elsewhere to walk on and later earn his own scholarship from Cavaliers head coach George Welsh.

Then after a successful start to the legal profession, Dooley switched gears and returned to his love of football. Four short years later, he latched onto the staff of Nick Saban at LSU and moved into the fast lane of the SEC. After five successful seasons that included the 2003 national title, Dooley moved with Saban to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

Dooley was named to his first head coaching position by Louisiana Tech in December 2006, and immediately began laying the foundation for future success. Included in his 1720 overall record was an 8-5 mark in 2008 highlighted by the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl. Tech finished second in the WAC that season and played in a bowl game for only the third time since joining the major college ranks in 1989.

The Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association named him 2008 Coach of the Year.

Dooley is married to Dr. Allison Jeffers Dooley, an OB/GYN and Fort Worth, Texas, native. They

Head Coaching Debuts

Derek Dooley is Tennessee’s 22nd head coach and on Sept. 4 became the 18th to win his first game as Vols skipper. Overall, Tennessee head coaches are 19-4 all-time in their first games. Gen. Robert R. Neyland coached the Vols during three separate tenures and thus had three “first” games. He won all three contests, improving the total number to 21-4.

Coaching Prowess

Head coach Derek Dooley’s staff at Tennessee has a proven track record-eight of his assistants have coaching experience in one of the BCS conferences, five have coached in the NFL and three have experienced the formiddable SEC. Baggett, Chaney, Hiestand, Smith and Wylie spent a combined 24 years coaching in the NFL with eight different teams-- the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams.

UT’s assistant coaching staff has a combined 66 years of coaching experience in all six BCS automatic qualifying conferences. The Vols’ assistant coaches have coached in the bowl games that now comprise the BCS a total of 10 times and boast coaching experience in 59 total bowl games-- including the Super Bowl.

Noting the Staff Chaney, Thompson Return

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and linebackers coach Lance Thompson prepare for their second year in Knoxville. Both joined Tennessee’s staff in 2009 and were retained by first-year head coach Derek Dooley.

Chaney, arrived on The Hill after three seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. He was most notably the mastermind of a stellar Purdue offense from 19972005, during which time the Boilermakers ranked inside the top 10 nationally in total offense six times.

Super Bowl XLIV winning quarterback Drew Brees played for Chaney during his tenure in West Lafeyette, and the pair led Purdue to the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth in 2000.

Thompson came to Rocky Top via Tuscaloosa, where he served on Nick Saban’s staff from 200708. His coaching resume is overflowing--Thompson has been a member of two national championships staffs, has a pair of SEC titles, two ACC championships and a Conference USA divisonal winner.

Smith Comes Home

Rounding out coach Dooley’s staff was former Tennessee standout Chuck Smith. The Los Angeles native will take over coaching the Vols defensive line.

Best known for his work with some of the biggest names in pro football, Smith spent the past season with the New York Jets No. 1 ranked pass defense. Over the past five seasons, Smith has coached and mentored nearly 60 NFL players, including Albert Haynesworth, Robert Ayers and Shaun Ellis-- all three former Vols.

He also worked with Michael Johnson, Osi Umenyiora, Derek Morgan and Bart Scott.

During his career in the NFL, Smith recorded 58.5 sacks in nine seasons and served as a captain during the Atlanta Falcons’ lone Super Bowl appearance after the 1998 season. He was later selected the “Best Defensive Lineman in Team History,” by Falcons’ fans.

On The Hill, Smith started at right end for two seasons. He helped the Big Orange to a win in the 1990 Sugar Bowl and earned All-SEC honors in 1991.

Wilcox on a Rising Star

According to a recent Sports Illustrated article, Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is one of college football’s best assistant coaches. The article, compiled by Andy Staples and Stewart Mandel, predicts Wilcox’s career is on the rise, citing the 49-4 record Boise State amassed during his four year tenure with the Broncos.

The General The Proverbial, Perpetual Yardstick

One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions.

According to UT legend Gus Manning, no one summed up Neyland and his coaching ability better than Wallace Wade: “He could take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his.” -- Wallace Wade, Alabama and Duke head coach and Neyland rival.

UT Wins at Neyland

The Best Just Got Better

The Home of the Vols just got a makeover, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side of Neyland Stadium were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins.

Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks laid since December that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area.

“Gate 21 is the focal point of the stadium,” said David Elliott, assistant athletics director for event management. “It’s our marquee entrance. Gate 21 typically has brought in 30,000 to 35,000 people on a game-bygame basis. It is a stunning, stunning entrance.”

Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic.

Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside.

Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.

Tennessee Terrace

The Tennessee Terrace now occupies the west upper deck, with 1,800 individual chair-back seats and a climate-controlled concourse featuring new restroom and concession areas. All of the stadium’s high-end concessions are available to Tennessee Terrace patrons, and those individuals also have the added bonus of sitting on the home sideline after the Vols switched back to the west for the first time since 1992.

Unveiling of the Neyland Statue

Perhaps the most anticipated improvement to the Home of the Vols will not be unveiled until the Nov. 13 homecoming date with Mississippi. As Vols young and old return to The Hill to see the Big Orange take on the Rebels, they will see a twice-life-size statue of the stadium’s namesake, Gen. Robert R. Neyland.

The statue will meet its permanent resting place between gates 16 and 17.

Sideline Change for 2010 Season

When Tennessee kicked off the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against UT Martin, the Vols did so on a new sideline. The Vols called the west sideline home until 1994, when the SEC began prohibiting student seating directly behind a visiting team bench.

In order to meet SEC guidelines, the athletics department approached the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in December to discuss making modest adjustments to student seating assignments. UT Athletics in conjunction with Student Affairs and SGA chose to add additional lower level student seating in sections J and K to offset the seat adjustments needed in section D to give students a more cohesive student section.

When at Neyland Stadium...

The Vols are 3-0 all-time against UAB with all three meetings occuring in Knoxville. Tennessee last beat the Blazers in 2008, 35-3. After trouncing UAB on homecoming in 1998, the Vols played the Blazers again to open the 2005 season with a 17-10 win.

SEC Instant Replay 2010 The Coaches’ Challenge

The head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling.

The Source

All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.

The Process

Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference Office.

A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays.

Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Official.

With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Official. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Official. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specific play data in the event a call is overturned.

While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed.

The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system.

Noting UAB  UAB is coming off its first win of the season, a 34-33 comeback victory over Troy on Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. The Blazers capped a 99-yard drive, that began with just 1:09 remaining, with a 44-yard touchdown reception by freshman wide receiver Jackie Williams on the final play of the game. It’s the biggest deficit UAB has ever overcome as it was down 23-0 late in the first half before rallying.  Senior defensive end Bryant Turner is tied for fourth in the nation with four sacks totaling a loss of 26 yards, including a season-high of two in the season opener vs. Florida Atlantic. The 260-pound senior is also tied for ninth in the country with six tackles-for-loss.  For the third straight week, the Vols will be faced with the task of shutting down an individual ranked in the nation’s top 25 in all-purpose yards. This week’s challenge: junior running back Pat Shed. Shed has amassed 473 total yards, including 206 out of the backfield. UAB’s leading return man has taken six kickoff returns for 173 yards and eight punt returns for 35 yards. Shed has yet to reach the end zone this season but has a long rush of 54 yards and a long kickoff return of 37. His individual work has UAB’s kickoff return game ranked third in Conference USA.  The Blazers bring Conference USA’s leading rushing attack into Knoxville Saturday. With 612 yards on the ground, UAB’s running game also ranks 30th in the country. UAB’s work on the ground is led by dual threat quarterback David Isabelle. The sophomore rushed for a Conference USA quarterback record 214 yards against FAU and has tallied 404 on the season. Isabelle and Shed rank fourth and fifth in the conference, respectively.  Junior quarterback Bryan Ellis put up 360 of his 404 passing yards in Saturday’s win against Troy after being inserted midway through the second quarter and facing a 16-0 deficit. Ellis also threw all three of his touchdowns in the victory.  Junior Trey Ragland ranks third in the nation in average yards per punt with 48.4. Ragland has seven punts over 50 yards and has pinned the opponent inside their own 20 seven times. His longest punt of the season was 75 yards.  Senior defensive back Hiram Atwater was named to the preseason All-Conference USA first team defense.  Senior tight end Jeffery Anderson was named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List after ranking second on the team in receptions (26) and receiving yards (398) to accompany five touchdowns. Anderson has three catches for 22 yards so far in 2010.  Blazers’ head coach Neil Callaway has a 12-27 (.289) record as a head coach. Callaway earned the head coaching position in December 2006 after several successful assistant coaching stints over a 25plus year span, including stops at Alabama, Auburn and Georgia.

Tennessee routed the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 37-13, for a homecoming victory in Knoxville. After the game, the Vols ascended to No. 1 in the polls, a spot they wouldn’t drop from for the rest of the season as they won the national title.

2005

The Vols edged the Blazers, 17-10, in the 2005 season-opener at Neyland Stadium. UT narrowly escaped the upset behind 110 yards on the ground from Gerald Riggs Jr.

2008

The Orange and White rolled past UAB, 35-3, in the last matchup between the two teams. The Vols racked up 266 rushing yards in the win.

Connections  UAB’s fourth-year head coach Neil Callaway had spent most of his career in the SEC before taking over the Blazers in 2007. Callaway was a two-year letterwinner for the Crimson Tide and an assistant coach at Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. Callaway and Tennessee linebackers coach Lance Thompson coached at Alabama together from 1999-2000. He was the offensive coordinator at Georgia from 2001-06 and helped the Bulldogs with a pair of conference championships.  Tennessee sophomore defensive end Willie Bohannon is the only player of the five Vols from Alabama who had seen significant playing time heading into this season. Bohannon played in 13 games as a redshirt freshman and he has one tackle in three games as a reserve in 2010. The Mobile, Ala. product was a two-time honorable mention all-state selection at Blount H.S. UAB senior safety Elliott McGaskin (Davidson H.S.) and junior offensive lineman Matt McCants (Williamson H.S.) were also prep standouts from Mobile.  UAB senior wide receiver Mario Wright and Tennessee freshman linebacker Raiques Crump both attended Minor High School in Birmingham, Ala.  Blazers Greg Irvin, a sophomore linebacker, and Brian Taylor, a freshman receiver, are from Demopolis, Ala. - the same town as UT freshman linebacker Martaze Jackson.  UAB junior safety Chase Daniel and redshirt freshman wide receiver Rickey Hrabowskie both went to Hoover H.S. along with Tennessee freshman linebacker John Probst.  UAB only has one Tennessean on its roster, senior wide receiver Mike Jones. Jones, who was an all-state selection out of Hunters Lane H.S. in Nashville in 2005, has 31 career receptions for 315 yards and one score for the Blazers.  The Blazers are 0-4 against the SEC since Callaway took over the program in 2007.

KNOXVILLE - Tauren Poole had touchdown runs of 24 yards and 14 yards as Tennessee beat UT Martin 50-0 on Saturday night for Derek Dooley’s first victory as the Volunteers’ coach.

It was Tennessee’s first shutout since a 48-0 win over Vanderbilt in 2003 and first time facing an FCS opponent since a win over The Citadel in 1983.

Tauren Poole had been waiting all year to prove he’d been unfairly stuck behind Bryce Brown and David Oku on the Vols’ depth chart last season. He delivered, darting through holes, running around coverage and picking up 110 yards on 17 carries before sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

Oku had his share of carries too and found some large holes for a 44-yard touchdown run with 5:00 left in the first quarter to give the Vols a 10-0 lead in the season opener for both teams.

Denarius Moore ran 58 yards for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Matt Simms. Moore finished with 66 yards on four catches, and Gerald Jones had 86 yards on six catches before injuring his left hand.

Tennessee scored nearly every way it could. Austin Johnson tackled D.J. McNeil in the end zone for a safety. Prentiss Waggner intercepted Derek Carr and ran 54 yards for a touchdown.

Daniel Lincoln kicked field goals of 21 and 35 yards.

KNOXVILLE - LaMichael James ran for 134 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown, in his first game back after a one-game suspension and No. 7 Oregon scored 45 consecutive points to beat Tennessee 48-13 on Saturday night.

James had only 27 yards at halftime after being targeted by the Volunteers’ defense for the entire first half. He started picking up momentum after the break, rushing for 25 yards on five carries in the Oregon’s first second-half drive. He broke several tackles on the 72-yard touchdown run on the first play of the subsequent drive for the Ducks (2-0).

Tennessee (1-1) went up 13-3 in the first half after an hour-long delay for lightning but fell apart after James’ long run.

A pass by Matt Simms intended for Zach Rogers was intercepted by Cliff Harris, who returned it 76-yards for another score to give Oregon a 27-13 lead with 6:27 left in the third quarter.

The Vols got a 48-yard field goal from Daniel Lincoln on their first drive and immediately got the ball back when Barner fumbled the following kickoff after a 39-yard return. Da’Rick Rogers had a 21-yard run that set up a 35-yard field goal by Lincoln with 8:53 left in the first quarter.

KNOXVILLE - The 10th-ranked Florida Gators beat the Tennessee Volunteers 31-17 on Saturday for their sixth consecutive win in the 40-game series between the Southeastern Conference rivals.

It’s the first time Florida has won three consecutive in Knoxville after having chances to do so in 1990, 1998 and 2004.

Tennessee (1-2, 0-1) tied the game at 10 with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Matt Simms to Denarius Moore with 8:59 in the third quarter. Simms completed 19 of 31 for two touchdowns and a pair of turnovers.

Florida appeared stopped on the next drive until Meyer called for a fake punt on fourthand-6. Omarius Hines ran 36 yards to keep the drive alive, and John Brantley eventually connected with Frankie Hammond on a 7-yard touchdown pass.

The Vols seemed on the verge of a meltdown when Simms appeared to be sacked in the end zone for a safety, but an official review ruled him down on the 1. Tennessee punted but scored on the next possession with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Simms to Justin Hunter on fourthand-6 to cut Florida’s lead to 24-17 with a 11:24 left.

Tennessee scored first for the first time against Florida since 2001 when Daniel Lincoln kicked a late first-quarter, 49-yard field goal, tying his career high.
