Consistently praised for her brilliant technique, tonal beauty, and superb musicianship, Canadian pianist Angela Cheng is one of her country’s national treasures. In addition to regular guest appearances with virtually every orchestra in Canada, she has performed with the symphonies of Saint Louis, Houston, Indianapolis, Colorado, Utah, San Diego and Jacksonville, as well as the philharmonic
May 24, 1939 – October 6, 2021
Sara was born in the little south Arkansas town of Waldo, in Columbia County. Music was one of the pillars of her life. She studied piano under her mother, starting at the age of three and by her early teens was playing the organ in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hope.
She attended the University of Arkansas – under a National Merit Scholarship – where she received a BA and MA in history and then a performance degree in organ. She was the Music Director, Organist, and Choir Director at St. Theodore’s Episcopal Church in Bella Vista for fifteen years. She donated the grand piano to the Walton Arts Center in her mother’s memory.
Francisco, the Anchorage Museum of Art in Alaska and the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
In addition to his positions as Music Director of SoNA and the Thunder Bay Symphony in Ontario, Canada, Haas is the founder and Artistic Director of Sympho, a trailblazing concert production company that creates powerful and emotional musical experiences, collaborating with leading artists and using unexpected performance methods and unorthodox venues.
Haas is a graduate of Yale University and The Juilliard School. He resides in Germantown, New York, with his wife and three children. Find out more at paulhaas.com.
orchestras of Buffalo, Louisiana, Rhode Island, London, Israel and Minas Gerais in Brazil.
Recent performances include a debut with the Fort Worth Symphony, performing Rachmaninoff’s “Variations on a Theme of Paganini,” under the baton of Robert Spano, and a return to the Vancouver Symphony, performing Ravel’s Concerto in G with Otto Tausk.
A native of Hong Kong, Ms. Cheng studied extensively with Menahem Pressler at Indiana University and with Sascha Gorodnitzki at The Juilliard School. She is currently on the artist faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she was honored with the 2011-12 Excellence in Teaching Award.
Sara was the founding Dean of the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She was a longtime supporter of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, serving on the board, including a tenure as Board Chair. When the organization re-branded as SoNA, she continued serving the organization as a member of the Board of Advisors.
In 1960 she married Frank Sharp, and they then moved to a farm on Kessler Mountain where they raised four children and housed many foster children.
During Sara’s sixty years in Northwest Arkansas, she rarely missed a choral, symphonic, or organ performance, as well as making her adopted Ozark hills ring with the sound of her music.
A gift to the Overture Society (our annual fund) provides general operating support for concerts, education programs, outreach, collaborations and administrative expenses.
Chair Sponsorships — whether individual, group or corporate — provide much needed support and can create a personal relationship with a SoNA musician. Your gift will help attract and retain the best musicians, ensuring our continued artistic growth and regional stature. A gift of $2,500 will sponsor a SoNA principal musician chair, or a gift of $1,000 will sponsor an orchestra section chair.
Your planned charitable bequest to SoNA can make a significant impact by helping to ensure that our mission will thrive far into the future. Gifts of all sizes make it possible for us to build financial strength and maintain our tradition of excellence and community outreach for generations to come. For assistance with bequests, including gifts of stock, please contact Jett Moore with Greenwood Gearhart, Inc. at jtmoore@greenwoodgearhart.com or 479.521.5353.
SoNA wishes to thank the donors who have contributed to our Endowment Fund through the Maestro’s Circle. If you would like to learn more about multi-year gifts that help ensure SoNA’s future, please contact D. Riley Nicholson, Executive Director, at riley@sonamusic.org or 479.521.4166.
