Paul Haas Music Director & Conductor SoNA Music Director Paul Haas enjoys a distinctive career as conductor, composer and installation artist. His guest conducting engagements have included performances with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, San Antonio Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony, among others, as well as festival appearances.

Over the last decade, he has written commissions for a wide variety of iconic venues, including the Park Avenue Armory and Rubin Museum of Art in New York, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, the Anchorage Museum of Art in Alaska, and

Zsolt Eder Violin

Miho Oda Sakon Violin

Zsolt Eder, SoNA Associate Concertmaster, is Professor of Violin and Viola at Washburn University (KS) and concertmaster of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra (TSO), where he is a frequent soloist and will be featured in May in Brahms’ Double Concerto with SoNA Associate Principal Cellist Eman Chalshotori. Eder has been guest Concertmaster of the National Symphony of Colombia and soloist with the Washburn University Orchestra. In 2016 he premiered a violin concerto by Joseph Kern, written for him and the Midwest Chamber Ensemble, and performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Medical Arts Symphony of Kansas City. He enjoys a number of collaborations and performs frequently as part of the Kansas City Symphony. Born in Budapest, Eder spent his childhood in Perth, Australia. In college, he studied with Lorand Fenyves in Toronto, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Cleveland Institute with Paul Kantor. He studied baroque violin with Jeanne Lamon, and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the UMKC Conservatory studying with Benny Kim and Noah Geller. Eder has performed extensively in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He is a Sunflower Festival Artist and presents a chamber music series in Topeka called Zsolt Eder and Friends, and has worked for CityMusic Cleveland, Harmony Project KS and UMKC’s Musical Bridges. 4

In addition to his positions as Music Director of SoNA and the Thunder Bay Symphony in Ontario, Canada, Haas is the founder and Artistic Director of Sympho, a trailblazing concert production company that creates powerful and emotional musical experiences, collaborating with leading artists and using unexpected performance methods and unorthodox venues.

Miho Oda Sakon, SoNA Principal Second Violin, is a member of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra, and Artist-inResidence at the Suzuki Music School of Arkansas (SMSA). She frequently performs with the Tulsa Symphony and the Arkansas Philharmonic, and participates in SoNA’s ImagiMusic program. She has also performed with the Japan Philharmonic and the Tokyo City Philharmonic. As soloist, Sakon has performed with the Ensemble Endless (Tokyo) and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Republic). She has performed more than 500 educational outreach concerts in Japan, and performed in both Japan and the U.S. for the Ozark Literacy Council, the SMSA scholarship fund, and for children affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011. Currently, she and SoNA pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi are performing the complete Beethoven violin sonatas at Butterfield Trail Village. Sakon grew up in Japan and moved to the U.S. in 2008. She holds both a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Arts degree in Violin Performance from the Tokyo College of Music, under master teacher Yoko Kubo. At Indiana University, she pursued additional study with Yuval Yaron. Sakon’s students have been awarded first chair at All Region and All State Orchestra auditions, and many have received music scholarships for advanced study at various universities.
