Pardon our Construction! Welcome to the 2015-16 Season at Walton Arts Center, or what we call our “Hard Hat Season!” As you can tell, exciting things are happening all around us. The new Spring Street parking garage is now open, which allows for more parking around Walton Arts Center. New administrative offices are also complete, expanding production, backstage, storage, and wardrobe space – allowing us to better meet the needs of 21st century touring companies like Pippin and Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. But, as you look around, you are likely wondering what else is happening here at Walton Arts Center… We are in the midst of a historic renovation, scheduled to be complete in Fall 2016. We can’t wait for you to see the magnificent lobby, expanded concessions, and the new Sudduth Garden Room. If you have already supported the expansion, thank you! If you have yet to participate, please consider joining us as we invest in the future of Walton Arts Center. Together we are building a better place to live! Thanks again for your continued involvement and support. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Tips for Audience Members
Welcome to Walton Arts Center! Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. What do I need to know? Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Some performances may have an intermission. Some may be recorded live. Need help? Check our website prior to arriving, or ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons in the theater, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise – and please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show. When concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a firstcome, first-served basis at Coat Check in the main lobby. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility.

Diana Krall Nov. 19, 2015
Respected far and wide as a wildly successful recording and performing artist, Diana Krall remains a true musical force. By any standard, this five-time Grammy AwardŽ-winning jazz pianist and vocalist is one of the most accomplished and distinctive musicians in the world today. At any given moment, she could be producing Barbara Streisand’s new album, serving as musical director and arranger for Paul McCartney, or hitting the road for a good cause with Neil Young. As the record shows, Diana Krall has already done all that and much more. Along the way, she has also sold more albums than any other female jazz artist of the last 30 years, establishing herself as one of the bestselling and most beloved performers of her generation. Join us in giving an extremely warm Northwest Arkansas welcome to his musical legend as she graces the Walton Arts Center stage for the first time!

Meet our New Steinway D Concert Grand Piano!
Pictured: Thelma Fuller and Andrew Tyson, with Sara and Frank Sharp
Thanks to a major gift from Sara Sharp and seed money from the Northwest Arkansas Community Concerts Association, Walton Arts Center is proud to introduce the newest member of our musical family – a Steinway D Concert Grand Piano! The new Steinway D Concert Grand Piano was selected last spring when Walton Arts Center President and CEO Peter Lane joined Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA) Music Director Paul Haas, Saied Music Company representative Kim Koch and world-renowned pianist Andrew Tyson to tour the Steinway factory in New York. Audiences in Northwest Arkansas first heard the piano during the June finale of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and his Fifth Symphony. Sara Sharp grew up in a musical family and has always found a way to share classical music with her immediate family, her music family and her community. She plays the organ in many churches and is a major donor to both Walton Arts Center and SoNA. Her gift was given in loving memory of her mother Ila Verne “Sallye” Crisp Savage Franks who taught her the joy of classical music. The Northwest Arkansas Community Concerts Association presented live performances to the community from 1947 through 1987. Artists included the Vienna Boys Choir, Marilyn Horn, the Bel Canto Trio and Ballet Folklorico. Most of the concerts were held at the University of Arkansas campus in the Men’s Gym, and the organization was managed entirely by volunteers. When the organization dissolved, members generously donated their assets to Walton Arts Center for the purpose of purchasing a Steinway Grand Piano. Thank you to T. Fuller and the members of the Northwest Arkansas Community Concerts Association for planting the seed for our new piano! We hope you enjoy hearing the Steinway D Concert Grand Piano throughout Walton Arts Center’s 24th season and in the years to come. For more information on being a Walton Arts Center Friend, please visit waltonartscenter.org/support or call (479) 571-2759.

Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass
L.A. Theatre Works: Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Ira Glass, the host and creator of the wildly popular NPR radio show “This American Life” returns to Walton Arts Center to discuss all he’s learned (and mastered) over his 37 years at NPR’s network headquarters: how to find both drama and humor in seemingly ordinary places, what makes a compelling story, and how he and his staff are pushing the limits of broadcast journalism. Glass mixes stories on-stage, combining narration with pre-taped quotes and music to recreate the sound of the show as you watch and listen along.
It’s an epic confrontation of good versus evil in this dramatic production by L.A. Theatre Works, the foremost radio theater company in the U.S. for over two decades. This veteran ensemble makes its celebrated return to Walton Arts Center in a vibrant, spontaneous performance that features a first-rate cast with frightening horror film and TV credits, live sound effects and a connection rarely felt in a traditional theater setting. It’s more than theater – it’s an event!

Volunteer Spotlight
2015 Volunteer of the Year
Maureen Neagle
In her 23rd season as a volunteer at Walton Arts Center, Maureen Neagle has seen plenty of change over the years. Now with WAC expanding and renovating its campus, even bigger and brighter developments are on the horizon. In all of her time volunteering, one thing has remained the same for Neagle: the joy she gets from serving patrons of the arts — especially children. “Children are some of the best patrons,” Neagle says. “I really get a kick out of any of our performances geared toward children. They have such a wonderful way of reacting and so often in totally unexpected ways.” Neagle and her husband Gary began volunteering at WAC in 1993 after they retired in Northwest Arkansas from California, where Neagle owned a mortgage lending company. If you know her enthusiasm, you won’t be surprised to know that in addition to volunteering at WAC, Neagle works as a certified fitness instructor, teaching classes primarily to older adults. She’s been a fitness instructor for 26 years, and she has no plans of stopping anytime soon. It’s the people who keep her coming back to WAC to volunteer — the public, the staff and her fellow volunteers. “It’s been an interesting journey with all the changes over the years and I’m excited to see what lies ahead,” Neagle says. Walton Arts Center extends a heartfelt thanks to Maureen Neagle.
Be at the center of it all. Play a leading role at WAC. Become a part of our volunteer team. Call 479.571.2787 for more information or visit us at www.waltonartscenter.org/volunteer
