26 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. What do I need to know? Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/ children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can
enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise – and please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show. When concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cups to future performances for reduced price refills.
Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance. The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility.

$131.2M Direct Economic Impact 4,647 Jobs
$10.7M in State Taxes
$63.7M Event-Related Spending by Audiences
$3.4M in Local Taxes
Study Demonstrates Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Sector on Northwest Arkansas’ Economy A recent study by Americans for the Arts has found that Northwest Arkansas’ nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $131.2 million in economic activity in 2015, including $67.5 million in spending by arts and culture organizations and an additional $63.7 million in eventrelated spending by their audiences. This activity supported 4,647 jobs and generated $14 million in government revenue. The Arts & Economic Prosperity® Study is conducted nationally every five years. AEP5, the fifth study to be completed, documents the economic contributions of the nonprofit arts industry across the country and in 341 study regions, representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia during Fiscal Year 2015. Northwest Arkansas, defined for this purpose as Benton and Washington counties, was the only Arkansas study region included in the report. “The AEP study quantifies the economic benefits of arts and culture organizations within a community,” explains Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy for Americans for the Arts. “This study changes the conversation about the arts from that of a ‘charity’ to one about an ‘industry’ that provides both cultural and economic benefits to the community.” Cohen detailed the findings recently during a news conference at the Rogers World Trade Center. Walton Arts Center staff compiled data for the study from 23 eligible nonprofit arts and cultural organizations located in Northwest Arkansas. Each partner provided detailed budget information for FY15 including labor, payments to local and nonlocal artists, operations,

administration, programming, facilities and capital expenditures/asset acquisition. Patrons also were surveyed about spending around their attendance to arts events. Project economists customized inputoutput models for each study region to ensure reliable and actionable localized results.
Key Study Findings for NWA:
Nearly 1.8 million people attended arts and culture events in Northwest Arkansas in 2015. Event-related spending by these attendees totaled $63.7 million, excluding the cost of admission, or roughly $35.89 per person. That’s slightly higher than the national average of $31.47 per person, and almost double the $19.54 per person spending in the NWA region documented by the prior AEP study (AEPIV) covering Fiscal Year 2010.
The economic impact of the arts accounts for more than the monies spent in communities by residents. Cultural tourists spend money, as well. 25% of attendees traveled from outside of the county in which the event took place. Their event-related spending on average was 199% more per person than local attendees, at $71.20 vs. $23.85.
Among local attendees, 42% said they would have traveled to a different community to attend a similar cultural event, if the arts event they wanted to attend was not taking place.
“Arts organizations provide jobs, support the economy and the government while they also educate, entertain and increase our quality of lives.” Randy Cohen, Americans for the Arts
A vibrant arts community not only keeps residents and their discretionary spending closer to home, it also attracts visitors who spend money and help local businesses thrive. 86% of nonlocal attendees indicated that the primary purpose of their visit was “specifically to attend this arts or cultural event.”
Comparing results from AEPIV and AEP5 shows that the arts industry in Northwest Arkansas has grown significantly, due in large part to the addition of the Walmart AMP and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art between FY10 and FY15. • Total economic impact is up 124% • Number of jobs is up 212% • Local and state tax revenue is up 248% • Resident spending is up by 50% and non-resident spending is up 97%

Key Study Findings Nationally:
The nonprofit arts industry nationally generated $166.3 billion of economic activity in 2015 – $63.8 billion in spending by arts and cultural organizations, and an additional $102.5 billion in eventrelated expenditures by their audiences.
This industry supported 4.6 million jobs and generated $27.5 billion in tax revenue to local, state, and federal governments – a yield well beyond their collective $5 billion in arts allocations. “With current threats of cutting funding for nonprofit organizations, this study is timely,” Cohen adds. “The $27.5 billion generated in tax revenue by the arts industry nationally going back to the government shows that municipal, state and federal arts support is not a one-way street. Arts organizations provide jobs, support the economy and the government while they also educate, entertain and increase our quality of lives.” The full report, a map of the 341 study regions and an economic impact summary for each can be found at www.AmericansForTheArts.org/EconomicImpact.

Bria Skonberg
Oct. 14, 2017
Nov. 10, 2017
The Huntertones’ mission is simple: create live music on real instruments that will often make you think and always make you groove. Melding jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, R&B and rock, this highenergy, horn driven band out of Brooklyn, NY is known for defining their own musical path and creating original music inspired by the voices of the past and the soundtrack of the present. Adding depth and contrast to their live set, The Huntertones shift from a dynamic six-piece ensemble to a trio featuring saxophone, sousaphone and beat-boxing, keeping their listeners’ eyes and ears open at every turn.
Canadian singer, trumpeter and songwriter Bria Skonberg has been described by The Bria Skonberg Wall Street Journal as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation.” Recognized as one of “25 for the Future” by DownBeat magazine, Skonberg wields a unique blend of modern-day pop sensibility and sizzling musicianship, both curious and exotic. Elite jazz chops, artfully mixed with worldly rhythms and contemporary songwriting result in a sophisticated sound that has been compared to Norah Jones and Diana Krall.

Donny McCaslin
Donny McCaslin Feb. 10, 2018 With three Grammy® nominations and 11 albums to his name, Donny McCaslin’s path to success has been punctuated by impressive collaborations and projects, but perhaps none quite as significant as his experience working with David Bowie on the album Blackstar. A spark plug in New York jazz circles for the past two decades, and known for integrating the entire range of sounds that a tenor sax can produce into his repertoire, McCaslin seamlessly transitions from mainstream modern to funky fusion to laid-back balmy ballads. Paying tribute to Bowie and beyond, McCaslin is here to prove his reputation, taking jazz down a contemporary path with profound expertise and limitless improvising technique.
Alicia Olatuja Mar. 2, 2018 Praised by The New York Alicia Times as “a singer with a Olatuja strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage,” Alicia Olatuja has been astounding audiences with her exquisite vocals, artistic versatility and captivating demeanor since 2013, when she performed as a featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Obama’s second inauguration. Influenced by a wide range of musical styles, from gospel and soul to jazz and classical, Olatuja has developed a special talent: a full-bodied tone, precise pitch balanced with soulful honesty and personal engagement at the lowest whisper or highest wail.

Hot Club of Cowtown
Joe Ely Acoustic
Sept. 28, 2017
Oct. 19, 2017
Hot Club of Cowtown’s reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable shows has become its global brand. Lauded for cozy melodies and exuberant improvisation, this trio is at the top of their game, weaving together disparate styles and standing at the crossroads where country meets jazz. The band’s wide influences are as much the smoky bistros of 1930s Paris as they are the hoedowns of the mythic American West. Prepare for a lively journey when the Hot Club of Cowtown kicks off West Street Live!
Joe Ely stands in a tradition of great music born out on the gritty plains of west Texas and influenced by its legends: Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings - the list goes on and on. Ely’s music brings forth this terrain, the spirited people it produces and the special sense of destiny that its vastness creates. His unique mix of honky-tonk, Tex-Mex and rock ‘n’ roll conjures a western fantasy with stories, customs and amusements all its own. Don’t miss this awe-inspiring performance by one of the great Lubbock luminaries.

An Evening with Spencer Bohren
Nov. 9, 2017
Jan. 18, 2018
A charismatic performer, Susan Werner’s creative restlessness has become her defining characteristic, leading her to write 12 albums in a variety of genres ranging from folk to rock and Tin Susan Werner Pan Alley to gospel. What might a woman deemed by NPR as “The Empress of the Unexpected” try next? Find out when she takes the West Street Live stage to showcase the sharp, funny and compassionate songwriting that has prompted her rise to the elite of American songwriters.
Spencer Bohren’s music resonates the rivers, roads, and bayous of New Orleans and his ability to animate musicians of the past with their music and stories is legendary. His laid-back stage presence and the tales prefacing the songs make each concert feel like a visit with an old friend. Woven through the fabric of his performances are his original pieces, echoing the traditional music he loves, yet written from a modern viewpoint and punctuated by superlative playing of an ever-changing assortment of vintage guitars, lapsteels and banjos. Come and be charmed by the openness of his music and his gracious personality.

Raul Raul Midón is a distinctive and Mindón searching artist, characterized by a silky tenor voice and a syncopated, flamenco and jazzinfused guitar style. Bass, harmony and melodic lines fly from the fretboard in a way that belies the fact that all the music is produced by just two hands. In his own words, the musician, blind since birth, describes it best. His music is “for those who are interested in going beyond notions of genre – it’s for listeners with open ears, open minds, open hearts.”

Northwest Arkansas Jazz All-Stars Learning through the arts at Walton Arts Center
Jazz is considered by many to be the only truly American art form, yet its imprint on American culture often goes unrecognized. Through a partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Jazz Society, Walton Arts Center is working to advance the creative spirit and appreciation of Jazz Arts — especially with young musicians — through engagement, education and performance. Walton Arts Center’s first Jazz All-Stars began swinging in January 2017. Eighteen students from eight high schools dedicated three months of Sunday afternoons to rehearse with some of Northwest Arkansas’ finest jazz men and women from the Fayetteville Jazz Collective. Chosen by audition, the All-Stars learned jazz techniques, jazz styling, music theory, improvisation and skills on their instruments leading up to public performances and a professional recording session. As the program begins a second year, high school students are offered the chance to join this music community of like-minded, passionate young musicians at a pivotal point in their personal and artistic development. Walton Arts Center’s goal is to share this uniquely American art form and to raise the level of musicianship for each All-Star. Auditions are planned for January 2018. Instrumentation for the All-Stars includes saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass and drums.
“ When kids realize that
jazz is part of the DNA of today’s music styles, they deeply understand how the past is connected to the present. The doors swing wide to a new

musical universe.

TheatreSquared’s “Unmissable” 2017-18 Season Six-Play Season Features Regional and World Premieres
“Unmissable,” says Robert Ford, artistic director of TheatreSquared (T2). “That’s the best word we can use to describe [the upcoming 2017/18 six-play season].” “We’ve secured the rights to both the 2015 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical and the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play, immediately after their Broadway runs. We’ll launch the world premiere of a gripping new play based on untold events in the life of Nina Simone. We’ll bring home an Arkansas playwright’s acclaimed new play – told partly in rap, with comic verve – of how his parents first met as refugees in south Arkansas. And we’ll reimagine two classics with abundant theatrical invention.” T2’s Season 12 officially launched in August with 20 performances of the 2015 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Fun Home, directed by associate artistic director Amy Herzberg and featuring Broadway veterans Rita Harvey and Rob Sutton as well as Fayetteville native Halley Mayo. In October, TheatreSquared stages the world premiere of The Champion, by Amy Evans, inspired by untold, true events in the life of R&B legend Nina Simone. It’s 1962 and Nina and her band are holed up from a snowstorm in a greasy spoon somewhere in North Carolina. As tempers flare and secrets surface, it seems the waitress at this small-town diner may soon be the only witness to the end of a musical era. Reginald Douglas, artistic producer of City Theatre, returns to direct The Champion, featuring Joy Jones as Nina Simone. Performances are Oct. 11 – Nov. 5. For the holiday season, T2 offers an inventive twist on Frank Capra’s classic film with It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, by Joe Landry. Performances are Nov. 29 – Dec. 31. In the new year, TheatreSquared presents The Humans, by Stephen Karam, winner of the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play. 44
Walton Arts Center OnStage Fall/Winter 2017-18
As darkness falls, a Pennsylvania family’s holiday dinner transitions to drinks and perhaps a bit too much honesty. Performances of this existential, funny, scathing, and smartly written new comic drama are set for Jan. 24 – Feb. 18, 2018. In March, T2 will stage Vietgone, by Arkansas native Qui Nguyen. A modern twist on the All-American love story, this recent off-Broadway hit is a classic boy-meets-girl tale – except this boy and girl are refugees from the Vietnam War newly settled in a relocation camp in Fort Chaffee, Ark. Fresh from its acclaimed 2017 New York debut, Vietgone presents a fresh theatrical take on one Arkansas family’s unique history. Directed by T2 artist in residence Kholoud Sawaf, performances are slated for Mar. 14 – Apr. 8, 2018. And in the final production of the season, TheatreSquared presents The Hound of the Baskervilles, as freely adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson and directed by Mark Shanahan. Packed with verbal and visual ingenuity, this sublimely funny reimagining of the most celebrated Sherlock Holmes Tickets, mystery is a hyper-theatrical tour de force. subscriptions Performances are Apr. 25 – May 20, 2018. and information available at Performances take place in Walton Arts Center’s intimate 175-seat Nadine Baum Studio Theater.

It’s All About the Drama with Trike Theatre for Youth Kids grow up quickly, as the saying goes, and the same can be said for Trike Theatre, which started in a small downtown storefront in 2008. Today, Trike Theatre, Northwest Arkansas’ Professional Theatre for Youth, has programming yearround and is not only reaching young actors, but their parents, teachers and younger siblings, too. Over the years, the nonprofit moved from location to location before establishing its current home on the Bentonville Square. But empowering youth to forge deep connections with themselves, their community and the world by seeing, participating in and learning through theater has been the focus for Trike Theatre since day one. “Our focus has stayed true even though we’ve branched out and done a million other things,” says Jason Suel, Trike’s head of outreach. After earning her graduate degree, Trike Theater founder and artistic director Kassie Misiewicz worked in professional theaters for youth in Milwaukee and Seattle. When she and her family moved to Northwest Arkansas, she believed it was the perfect place to create such a program – and her colleagues at Walton Arts Center agreed. “Trike Theatre’s partnership with Walton Arts Center has been truly symbiotic,” says Misiewicz, who today serves as Trike’s artistic director. “When we were first starting in 2008, even before we had our nonprofit status, I met with Laura Goodwin at WAC to dream of possible education and artistic collaborations. Our shared artistic aesthetic and deep love and respect for young audiences led us to co-create Digging Up Arkansas and Bear State of Mind – two plays that challenged both companies to develop original Arkansas-based stories and refine the way we engage the audience.”

Walton Arts Center OnStage Fall/Winter 2017-18
Since 2009, Digging Up Arkansas has been performed in all 75 of Arkansas’ counties and has reached more than 30,000 third through fifth graders. This year, Trike Theatre is projected to serve 40,000 people in and out of the Northwest Arkansas community through all of its programming. In addition to offering Theatre Academy classes and camps yearround, the Youth Theatre program gives actors ages 8-16 the chance to audition and perform in several full-scale productions. The 2017/18 Season lineup includes Charlotte’s Web and Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, both performed in Walton Arts Center’s Starr Theater. For its youngest audiences, Trike Theatre also offers its Little Trikes Series – professional, engaging theater experiences for children ages 2-5 and their families. Trike Theatre’s reach goes well beyond Northwest Arkansas. As national art integration consultants, Suel and Misiewicz impact teachers and students across the country. In NWA, Trike’s artseducation outreach includes the SmART Residency Program, a partnership with Walton Arts Center supporting students at Sonora and Bayyari elementary schools. Through this program, Trike’s teaching artists provide curriculum-linked workshops, pre-performance and post-performance workshops and professional development. “We’re not only just about reaching the kids, we’re about reaching their parents and the teachers, and educating about what the arts can do,” Suel says. He also echoes Misiewicz in pointing out that the organization would not be where it is today were it not for Walton Arts Center. “They support us; they believe in what we do.” Now entering its sixth season as a resident company of Walton Arts Center, and with the recent WAC expansion and renovations now complete, Trike will be able to bring more shows to the Fayetteville community – providing even more opportunities for youth theater in Northwest Arkansas.

Community Creative Center Hands-on Arts Education for All
Art should be accessible to everyone. That is the belief of the Community Creative Center (CCC). To this end, the nonprofit arts organization provides year-round pottery, painting, drawing, and mixed-media art classes and workshops for people of all ages and skill levels. Located at WAC’s Nadine Baum Studios, CCC has a fully equipped clay studio, glaze room, outdoor kiln room, drawing studio, two multipurpose art studios and gallery exhibition space. Through grant-funded programs like Stage to Studio and Curious Minds, CCC reaches more than 1,600 students a year. These programs provide curriculum-enhancing art activities at no cost to schools that have at least 60 percent free and reduced lunch participation. “Arts accessibility for all has always been central to CCC,” Executive Director Barbara Putman says. “From the beginning, our organization has provided scholarships and subsidized class fees for underserved community members.” For Northwest Arkansas students, the Stage to Studio program gives pupils the opportunity to watch a live performance at Walton Arts Center, then continue the experience across the street at CCC with a hands-on art workshop exploring themes introduced by the performance. In addition to curriculum-based school programs, CCC has offerings outside the classroom. Local youth have access to art throughout the year thanks to after-school, spring break, and summer camp classes and programming. “The classes we offer range from painting, to drawing, ceramics and more,” explains Ashley Byers, the Center’s education program manager. “We’re especially excited about our wheel-throwing and figure drawing classes as they suit our goals of offering unique, quality art experiences.” 48
Walton Arts Center OnStage Fall/Winter 2017-18
Local artists have access to gallery and studio space at CCC as well. “They find a place to develop their craft through studio access, professional networking and exposure through exhibition and retail opportunities,” Putman says. Other initiatives tap into the healing benefits of art. Through a partnership with the Washington Regional Cancer Support Home, the MOSAIC program invites cancer patients, their families and caregivers to come to CCC for healing art workshops. CCC came to be nine years ago when WAC’s hands-on studio and visual arts programming ended in 2007, prompting local artists to join together and meet the need. In 2008, the Community Creative Center emerged as a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, with WAC resident company status. Recently, CCC has increased the number of classes and workshops available from 70 to 220 with attendance rising to over 3,200 kids and adults. 2018 marks CCC’s 10th year of providing hands-on arts to the Northwest Arkansas region and there is talk of something big to help celebrate. Putman offers this exciting teaser, “For years at CCC we’ve been encouraging people to imagine more. Now, we’ve taken our own advice and imagined a way to bring More Information available at the arts directly to people communitycreativecenter.org where they live, learn, work and play. Stay tuned!”
