26 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. What do I need to know? Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/ children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can

enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise – and please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show. When concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cups to future performances for reduced price refills.

Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance. The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility.

They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard... and the radio just couldn’t get enough of. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons when the Tony Award®-winning true-life musical phenomenon Jersey Boys makes its much-anticipated return to Walton Arts Center. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true.

School of Rock is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and “an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz!” (Entertainment Weekly). Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher who turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. This high-octane smash features 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber, all the original songs from the movie and musical theater’s first-ever kids rock band playing their instruments live on stage. Vanity Fair raves, “fists of all ages shall be pumping!”

Jessica Lang Dance

Sept. 14, 2018

Sept. 20, 2018

Mwenso & The Shakes are a unique troupe of artists from around the globe who wound up in Harlem, where they started presenting music that conveys both the sophistication and spontaneity of hardcore jazz and its folk roots. With impeccable craft, creativity and communicative flair, these artists create a vivid scene with each song—spoken and sung dialogue journeys through somber swaths of sound and high-intensity, freewheeling rowdiness. Taking from the stylings of African and Afro American music icons— including Fats Waller, Muddy Waters, James Brown and others— Mwenso & The Shakes lead an electrifying show that The New York Times calls “intense, prowling and ebullient.”

Performing the work of celebrated choreographer Jessica Lang—renowned for her visionary scenic collaborations with designers and artists, and her genre-bending contemporary ballet style—this New York City-based dance company’s compositions resist categorical definition. A complete universe is conceived in each dance, distinctive in its look and mood, sound and atmosphere. Lang has an architect’s eye, not just in terms of the structures she builds with moving bodies, but through her use of light, objects and scenic elements. Described as “reliably sophisticated and achingly beautiful” by the Chicago Tribune, this performance will immerse you in the beauty of movement and music.

Ragamala Dance Company’s Written in Water Oct. 14, 2018

Ragamala Dance Company’s Written in Water

Inspired by the 2nd century Indian board game Paramapadam (which later became the ever-popular Chutes & Ladders), this performance by Indian dance company Ragamala utilizes the ancient Indian dance form Bharatanatyam to express myths, legends and themes from traditional Hindu texts. Set in a videosaturated mystical landscape featuring original paintings by Chennai-based visual artist Keshav and performed to an original score of Iraqu Maqam, jazz and South Indian Carnatic music, the artists’ spectacular footwork, vocabulary of hand gestures and communicative facial expressions “provide some of the most transcendent experiences that dance has to offer” (The New York Times).

The Story of Everything Kealoha, Slam Poet Nov. 1, 2018

Kealoha The Story of Everything

Hot Club of San Francisco’s Cinema Vivant

Conceived and performed by internationally acclaimed Poet Laureate Kealoha, The Story of Everything is an epic poem that dramatizes explanations for human origin, drawing from sources as diverse as the Big Bang theory, disco, Michael Jackson and the Kumulipo – an 18th-century Hawaiian creation story. Kealoha explores how science and culture can be used to approach universal questions that have challenged humans from the very beginning – where do we come from, and where do we go from here? Join us for a journey through the past 13.7 billion years in this multi-media performance that encourages us to be better stewards of the earth and of each other.

Hot Club of San Francisco’s Cinema Vivant Jan. 10, 2019 Imagine yourself in the idyllic French countryside in the 1930s. A gypsy caravan sets up a film projector in a field outside of town, luring the locals out for an evening’s fun. As the images flicker to life beneath the stars, gypsy musicians play their guitars and fiddles, matching every movement on the screen. Reviving this lost entertainment, The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant, an evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live gypsy swing. Featuring two films by the famed European stopaction filmmaker Ladislaw Starewicz, this charming performance celebrates music of the past with intricate, scorching and often brilliant renditions of the film’s original scores.

Late Nite Catechism Sept. 6-9, 2018 | 5 Shows

In Starr Theater

Sister returns to Northwest Arkanas in this uproarious piece of theater that takes audience members back—sometimes nostalgically, sometimes fearfully—to the children they once were. The irrepressible Sister teaches an adult catechism class to a roomful of “students” (the audience). Over the course of the play, Sister goes from benevolent instructor, rewarding the “students” for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and laminated saint cards, to authoritative drill sergeant. These abrupt mood swings are bound to strike a resonant chord with everyone who survived the ups and downs of going to school with an omniscient authoritarian at the helm—Catholic or not!

The Pump and Dump Show: 2018 Parentally Incorrect Tour Sept. 22, 2018 The Pump and Dump Show brings their nationwide tour to Northwest Arkansas: more hilarious, more raw and more “Parentally Incorrect” than ever. Get yourself out of the house for once and join comedians Shayna Ferm and Tracey Tee to laugh—hard —about all the things that usually make you cry. This cathartic evening is full of original songs, interactive games, prizes and a much-needed jolt of validation and commiseration. Celebrating the release of Shayna and Tracey’s highly anticipated new book, this tour also features a segment where audience members can submit their own parenting horror stories—completely unscripted, 100% authentic and unbelievably hysterical. It’s rough out there in the momosphere. You’ve earned a night out!

Take Me to the River: New Orleans!

Oct. 2, 2018

Oct. 21, 2018

The Indigo Girls have spent 35 years performing together, produced 16 albums (seven gold, four platinum and one double platinum), earned a Grammy Award® and seven Grammy® nominations, and toured arenas, festivals and clubs the world over. It is rare to find musicians together for so long—and even rarer still with such profound successes. Their music lives in the hearts of generations of dedicated fans and continues to inspire young musicians. The Girls’ refinement—not only of style and skill, but of their own creative process—allows access to ever new and liminal spaces. With an artistic kinship rare and cosmic, the duo hits the road on tour for their newest album, One Day Lost—celebrating the past, present and future with wonder, gratitude and empathy.

Following the success of the award-winning film, Take Me to the River and its subsequent live tour, this historic show has been reimagined to showcase the musical foundation of another iconic American city—New Orleans. The deep, gritty grooves of Dumpstaphunk’s Ian and Ivan Neville combine with the slick bass lines of George Porter Jr., set to the driving beat of Terrence Higgins on drums and the jubilant, penetrating sound of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Big Chief Monk Boudreaux—a gifted folk artist, dynamic musician and vital figure to the New Orleans African American culture—joins them on stage, alongside the Grammy Award®-winning roots Cajun music group, the Lost Bayou Ramblers Duo and the once-rival 79rs Gang to produce what can only be described as “musical gumbo.”

The son of a preacher man, Mississippi-raised Paul Thorn spent much of his childhood in church services with his father and in neighboring African American congregations, where he became entranced with gospel music, its infectious spirit and the strong sense of communion that it fostered. Thorn’s upbringing helped cultivate his unique brand of roots music—bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern American, often addressing the foibles of human relationships, but never favoring the sacred over the profane. Performing alongside the five-time Grammy Award®-winning gospel icons the Blind Boys of Alabama and the legendary gospel group The McCrary Sisters, Paul Thorn returns to his roots in this soulful performance full of heartfelt songs of redemption and healing.

Combining contemporary circus with street performance art and sculpture, this poetic ode to childhood will electrify the young and the young at heart. Ages 5+

Zukerman Trio

An Evening with the Zukerman Trio

M A R Q U E E E V E N T

Sept. 21, 2018 A prodigious talent recognized worldwide for his artistry, violinist Pinchas Zukerman has been an inspiration to young musicians throughout his adult life. In a continuing effort to motivate future generations of musicians, the renowned artist has teamed up with cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Angela Cheng to offer a program featuring works by audience favorite composers including Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Dvorak, Shostakovich and more. With Zukerman’s matchless musicianship and charisma at its core, three of the world’s greatest soloists combine flawlessly with seamless execution, exciting precision and compelling interpretations. This is chamber music’s major league.

Janoska Ensemble

Janoska Ensemble March 29, 2019 Returning to Walton Arts Center, this Vienna-based ensemble has a vision for the modern interpretation of works, with an individual style both virtuosic and profoundly personal. The ensemble is comprised of the three Janoska brothers and their brother-in-law, who were each bred on a long family tradition of music making. The blending of cultures in Vienna serves as an inspiration for their work—with gypsy influences, short virtuoso showpieces, waltzes and standard classical melodies that each might have come from the work of a Viennese café ensemble a century ago. But it’s their original compositions, unprecedented arrangements and improvisational ingenuity that instantly garnered critical acclaim.

George Brooks’ ASPADA

The John Patitucci Electric Guitar Quartet

Oct. 12, 2018

Dec. 1, 2018

Drawing on the musical traditions of their homelands in India, Africa, Europe and America, George Brooks’ four world-renowned ASPADA musicians weave a global tapestry for the new millennium. Led by saxophonist and composer George Brooks, who is widely acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music, the group also includes South Indian virtuoso percussionist, Selvaganesh and global bass master, Kai Eckhardt, who together create the rhythmic foundation that supports the group’s creative vision. Osam Ezzeldin, a leading jazz musician in North Africa, rounds out the quartet on the keyboard. Bristling with East meets West polytonality and rhythmic intrigue, ASPADA provides a rare opportunity to observe musicians from diverse musical backgrounds conversing in a new musical language.

Two-time Grammy Award®-winner and fifteen-time Grammy® nominee, John Patitucci received world-wide acclaim for his many recordings with Chick Corea’s Elektric Band and Akoustic Band. His eclectic tastes have pushed him to explore various genres as both a musician and a composer, but it’s his work with jazz luminaries, such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and McCoy Turner, that skyrocketed his first solo recording to the top of the Billboard Jazz charts. Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest bassists, Patitucci’s latest band finds fresh inspiration in his love of funk and jazz, featuring two electric guitarists, Adam Rogers and Steve Cardenas, as well as virtuoso Nate Smith on drums and John on his signature electric bass.

Also helping to expose the rich musical history of Cuba to a wider audience, Pedrito Martinez has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Sting, among others. As a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena, Pedrito was named “Percussionist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association three years in a row. Together, these two artists are leading the new wave of Cuban jazz music—with a seductive, buoyant, powerful sound that will leave you wanting more.

Peter Bernstein, Larry Goldings & Bill Stewart Trio

Benny Green Trio with Veronica Swift

March 15, 2019

April 19, 2019

Guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart make up one of the best organ jazz trios of the past two decades. Jazz enthusiasts recognize them for charting new ground with hard-swinging, yet thoughtful music. Drawing mainly on jazz standards, and a few original pieces, they re-imagine the organ jazz trio in a quiet, sensual and grooving presentation. The respect these musicians have for one another comes through in the subtle and intricate manner of their musical conversation on stage. Peter’s warm, feather-light touch and fluid improvisation with Larry Goldings’ warm hum, and Bill Stewart’s polyrhythmic and melodic focus create a vivid combination of synergistic playing that lets each soloist float across the tunes.

Benny Green holds the history of jazz at his fingertips. With decades of experience playing with the most celebrated artists of the last half century, it’s no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist of his time. At age 24, Veronica Swift is recognized around the country as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene. An adept lyrical interpreter with tremendous tonal command, Swift has the keen ability to make everything she touches her own. Join us for a hot performance that combines the sophisticated know-how of an established jazz master, the complex sounds of his inventive band-mates and the riffs and scats of tomorrow’s jazz royalty.

Ruthie Foster

Nov. 29, 2018

Oct. 11, 2018

As one of the most respected and loved folksingers of our time, John McCutcheon’s music evokes a profound mark of place, family and strength. The breadth of his talent is staggering. He is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. But it’s his storytelling style—which has been compared to the likes of Will Rogers—that makes his music appealing to people of every generation and background. Like a conversation with an illuminating old friend, McCutcheon’s live performances are full of charm, wit and wisdom.

Presented in association with the University of Arkansas’ Faulkner Performing Arts Center

Jimmy Webb is widely considered a living legend of songwriting. A leader and mentor in the industry, Webb is the only artist ever to have received Grammy® Awards for music, lyrics and orchestration. His songs have been recorded by some of the greatest voices of all time including Glen Campbell, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Isaac Hayes, Art Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Michael Feinstein and Judy Collins, not to mention his rap hit with Kanye West. Webb is one of those rare songwriters who manages to bring a genuine measure of magic to everything he touches. Show Sponsor Support provided by Kelly & Marti Sudduth

LearningThroughtheArts at Walton Arts Center

When students board busses and travel to Walton Arts Center to experience the choreography of a MacArthur or Guggenheim Fellow—Michelle Dorrance or Ragamala Dance—they will explore a world of ideas with their peers that they are not likely to stumble onto via YouTube.

Robert Frost, Arthur Miller, Georgia O’Keeffe, Leonard Bernstein, Leontyne Price… Most Americans of 50 years ago could have named at least one poet, one playwright, one visual or performing artist of their day…

Can you?

People knew these luminaries because popular culture celebrated them along with athletes, movie stars as well as scientists – think Linus Pauling or Margaret Mead. So advised celebrated poet Dana Gioa to the Stanford graduating class of 2007: “Almost everything in our national culture, even the news, has been reduced to entertainment, or altogether eliminated… American culture has mostly become one vast infomercial.” But human achievement is bigger than salesmanship, and the role of a performing arts center is to offer its community opportunities to observe, engage and grapple with the imaginations of great thinkers, with artists.

Robust high-quality field trip programs can shape what our community will care about in the future. Education research tells us that accumulated arts field trips make a difference in student values such as empathy and tolerance. So hats off to Fayetteville Public Schools, the only education district in Northwest Arkansas where every elementary and middle school class takes a field trip to Walton Arts Center each academic year! Help get your school district involved by becoming an arts advocate.

Share your love for Walton Arts Center when you plan for the future. Dick Trammel literally broke ground when construction began on Walton Arts Center. He was present at the official groundbreaking ceremony, along with Helen and Sam Walton, Billie Jo Starr and other community leaders. Today, Trammel and his wife Nancy are breaking ground again with a gift to the Encore Society, Walton Arts Center’s legacy giving program. “Nancy and I want to give back to an organization that has meant so much to us over the years. By including Walton Arts Center in our will, we are making a legacy gift that will impact the next generation and keep the arts accessible for everyone in our community.”

Dick and Nancy Trammel

It’s easier than ever to support Walton Arts Center by including Walton Arts Center in your will or estate. There are many ways to make a gift that allows you to control your assets and get a tax benefit now. For information about the Encore Society, please contact Missy Kincaid at 479.571.2781.
