From the President/CEO

Welcome to our 2023/24 Season!

I get excited at the start of every new season, not just about the shows that are coming, but also about all of the work that we get to do for our community.

This year, we are thrilled to be hosting technical rehearsals and the first public performances for two new national tours: The Cher Show and JOHNNY CASH - The Official Concert Experience. It’s an important accomplishment for any performing arts center to tech and launch a tour because it’s a signal from producers that the venue’s technical staff and facilities are top-notch and respected in the industry.

It’s special for Walton Arts Center to be involved behind the scenes launching these tours, and we’re excited that Northwest Arkansas audiences have firstaccess to these premiere performances. These will be our 14th and 15th tour launches since 1997. Technical rehearsals also bring 50-100 people to live, work and play in our community for up to three weeks - that’s a big benefit to our local businesses and economy!

As a patron of Walton Arts Center, you know about all of the public performances that we host throughout the season, but did you know that we welcome, on average, 30,000 students annually from more than 90 local schools to our theater for free live performances as part of our Classroom Series? For many of these students, this is their first time experiencing professional productions performed live in a theater. Our learning and engagement team also works with 17 school districts in our region to provide an average of 250 hours of arts integration training and professional development for teachers.

While our learning and engagement team is serving our student and teacher population, our programming team is hard at work building a season that is interesting, diverse and engaging. Our popular 10x10 Arts Series presents different performance types - from live music to theater to dance - and represents a variety of cultures. For just $10 you can see favorite performers like Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer (all in one show!) or find a new favorite artist like Scythian or Mariachi Herencia de México. This is a perfect example of our commitment to arts programming for all.

These are just a few of our organizational initiatives that help increase the quality of life here in Northwest Arkansas. Thank you for supporting the work we do at Walton Arts Center. Now sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Visual Arts

Expanding Patron Art Experiences

Since the opening of Walton Arts Center, it’s been our mission to bring a variety of art and artists to our region. While we are known for our live performances, the visual arts have been part of our DNA from the start.

When Walton Arts Center opened in 1992, it not only provided more space for University of Arkansas theater productions and art exhibitions, but also began hosting touring performers and visual arts exhibitions from around the world.

By 2010, Walton Arts Center also began working with guest curators to create exhibitions by regional and national artists that aligned with programmatic themes during the season. The gallery exhibitions featured national and international artists during this time.

In 2020, Walton Arts Center refocused its visual arts program to supporting and presenting regional artists during the pandemic as a way to give back to the local art community during a particularly difficult

time. As our public spaces began to reopen, we started working with local artist Kathy P. Thompson to curate shows in our gallery with a focus on local visual artists.

“The Joy Pratt Markham Gallery gives Walton Arts Center a place to enrich the experience for each patron with visual artwork by regional artists,” Thompson said. “In this way, we also build a deeper community connection that allows each patron to experience art created here by people they might pass walking on the street. That is important and can be very powerful.”

The first show in 2021 was a juried exhibition of work by local and regional artists representing not only cities across the region but also diverse communities that are part of Northwest Arkansas. It was wildly successful and has become a cornerstone of our exhibition schedule each year.

“I look for compelling artworks and artists that align on universal themes,” Thompson

said. “This is where the magic lives, and it lets the exhibition naturally create its own synergy with each of the many and varied live performances presented on Walton Arts Center’s stages.”

Since 2021, works by more than 140 local artists have been showcased in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery.

New Musical Inspired by a Favorite Album

You already know and love the music of Alanis Morissette; maybe you even saw the seven-time Grammy Award® winner perform at the Walmart AMP in 2021. Now you can experience her worldchanging music in a new way when you see the Tony ® and Grammy award-winning musical inspired by Morissette’s seminal rock album, Jagged Little Pill.

“Redemptive, rousing and real … Jagged Little Pill stands alongside the original musicals that have sustained the best hopes of Broadway.”

Joy, love, heartache, strength, wisdom, catharsis, LIFE –everything we’ve been waiting to see in a Broadway show – is here in the exhilarating, fearless new musical. Directed by Tonywinner Diane Paulus (Waitress, Pippin, 1776 ) with a Tonywinning book by Diablo Cody (Juno) and a Grammy-winning score, this electrifying production about a perfectly imperfect American family “vaults the audience to its collective feet” ( The Guardian). Nominated for a seasonrecord 15 Tony Awards following its Broadway premiere, The New York Times declared the show “redemptive, rousing and real … Jagged Little Pill stands alongside the original musicals that have sustained the best hopes of Broadway.”

Ignited by Morissette’s groundbreaking lyrics and music – from beloved hits such as

“You Oughta Know,”

“Head Over Feet,”

“Hand In My Pocket,” and “Ironic,” to new songs written specifically for the

show – Jagged Little Pill features explosive choreography by Tony Award nominee and frequent Beyoncé collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The show is driven by the raw power of an onstage band under the musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements of Grammy, Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt ( American Idiot ).

8 SHOWS / Jan. 23-28

The tremendous success of Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill skyrocketed her to become the best-selling international debut artist in history; a title she still holds, with the record’s sales reaching 33 million copies worldwide. Now, 28 years after its release, Jagged Little Pill continues to be one of the Top 20 bestselling albums of all time. With 10 eclectic and acclaimed albums released over the subsequent years, Morissette’s music has garnered a total of seven Grammys, a Golden Globe nomination and total sales of over 60 million.

Atlantic Records partnered with the Broadway production for the release of its Original Broadway Cast Recording, adding to the label’s elite roster of Grammy-winning artists and cast albums. The cast album for Jagged Little Pill was officially released the day after the show’s opening night on Broadway and won the 2021 Grammy for best musical theater album. Jagged Little Pill also won Tony Awards for best book of a musical (Diablo Cody) and best featured actress in a musical (Lauren Patten).

Grand Central Publishing produced a hardcover coffee table book following the journey of Jagged Little Pill to Broadway, with behind-thescenes photos and stories from Morissette, Cody, the cast and more.

Recommended for ages 14 and up.

Please note: This production contains strong language, adult themes, drug use and moments of sexual violence that some may find upsetting.

A Spotlight on Our Show-Stopping Volunteers

At Walton Arts Center, we depend on our dedicated corps of volunteers daily who assist with anything from administrative tasks to helping you find your seat at a show.

They are involved in every aspect of what we do and provide thousands of hours of service each year. Our volunteers make a difference not only to the overall organization, but also to visiting artists and our community. They help create special memories for a child visiting the theater for the first time and for patrons who have attended shows with us for more than three decades (some of our volunteers have been here that long too).

Volunteers create their own schedule by signing up online for opportunities that best meet their availability and interests. Ben Walworth, a student at the University of Arkansas and also one of our volunteers, says “you should just do it! There are tons of opportunities based on what you enjoy.”

Leslie Redmon started volunteering in 2021 and has had two children since then. “I typically volunteer in the evenings, so I can easily do it while my kids are already in bed.”

You can also volunteer with friends or family. Jerry and MariAnne Retallick, a married couple, volunteer together and look forward to catching up in the car afterwards, laughing

about all of the things that happened at the shows. They have also made new friends.

“It really is about the group of volunteers and staff that you work with,” MariAnne continued, “with the patrons too, they leave laughing, having had a great experience.”

Our volunteers are committed to serving Walton Arts Center so that we can bring our community great art experiences, and we love to show our appreciation with lots of perks, from parties and outtings to show tickets and lounge access. Long-time volunteer Annee Littell’s favorite memory is using her volunteer complimentary tickets to see Kinky Boots with her daughter. The complimentary ticket program allows volunteers who reach a specific threshold of volunteer hours to get tickets to shows at the venue, and Littell turned their day at the theater into a party, with access to the Friends Lounge and a great show to top it off.

Along with social opportunities, karaoke parties and get-togethers, Walton Arts Center honors our volunteers every year at the Volunteer Appreciation Night, where awards are given based upon years of service and number of volunteer hours.

Volunteering is a great way to support the arts, meet service-minded individuals and get involved in the community. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit waltonartscenter.org/volunteer

Talking with TINA – The Tina Turner Musical Writer Katori Hall

I started on TINA – The Tina Turner Musical when I was a child. What I mean by that is that I’m from Tennessee. Tina’s from Tennessee. My mother loved Tina Turner so much that she named my eldest sister after her. Her presence was always baked into the soundtrack of my own life – my mum would talk about her all the time, and her influence on being a woman in the South. I had Tina in my blood memory. When the opportunity arose to write this musical and I got the call from Tali Pelman…I didn’t even pause, it was such an easy ‘yes!’

There is vibrancy and theatricality in all of TINA’s stage sets.

I was afraid though – it felt like Tina’s story had been told so many times before. A lot of people know about her life, or think they do: there’s been a plethora of articles, biographies and a film and so I had to think about what was going to be different about what I was going to write.

The musical had to bring the essence of a Tina Turner concert into a theater. It is a way to make sure that this icon and her energy never goes away – to make her immortal. My parents got to see Tina perform in person but my generation has only seen her concerts in film footage. To see Tina live was a gift that is gone and so the musical is the best way to keep the theatricality of Tina’s own concerts, her life story and her influence alive.

Being asked to walk hand in hand with Tina in the process taught me that it wasn’t about what she said, it was about what she was hesitant to say. This was where the new part of the story was. When I interviewed Tina, we talked a lot not just about Ike, but also her life before Ike. She grew up in an abusive home. Often people point to Ike and say he’s the biggest villain in her life, but in all actuality, there have been a number of negative factors, including racism, sexism, classism as well as abusive individuals and environments, including the household in which she grew up. Tina has had to slay the biggest dragons that anyone can slay and yet Tina’s journey has been utterly inspirational. As a result of working on the project, I can say that as a black woman from the South, I now move in a different way: I became clearer when I felt I was not being respected or given my worth. This came from listening to how Tina beat all the odds, and I am so honored to be involved.

I want people to leave the theater thinking and feeling that they can literally achieve anything.

To see what this woman achieved in a life that others may have deemed non-important, to see this woman come from the middle of nowhere to being at a point where her impact will be felt for generations.

Broadway Series
Katori Hall
“I want people to leave the theater thinking and feeling that they can literally achieve anything.”
- Katori Hall
30 Walton Arts Center OnStage Fall/Winter 2023/24

You can slay domestic abuse, you can slay the dragon of racism and I want people to leave the theater feeling triumphant. The show ends with a concert. There’s so much joy in having survived and I want people to understand that no one can take your love and power from you. It’s inside yourself and it can’t be taken.

8 SHOWS / Dec. 12-17

I’m so happy that we can showcase the essence of Tina as a resilient woman, in addition to Tina the performer. The music is kind of secondary in that respect.

It’s the story of survival in the show that’s most important – the message that you can rise to your own personal mountaintop.

Katori Hall is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright whose work includes not only TINA – The Tina Turner Musical but also The Mountaintop, which fictionalizes the final night of Martin Luther King Jr’s life, Hurt Village and The Blood Quilt

Try These Staff Recommendations For Your Next Theater Outing

With a season full of music, theater, dance, shows for kids and families and more, it can be hard to decide which shows to see. To help you pick, we’ve asked some of Walton Arts Center’s staff (the people in the know) to recommend the performances they are most excited about this season!

Musical Theater

SIX

“What isn’t to love about SIX? It is such a fun way to look at history, not to mention the songs, costumes and the all-female orchestra. It’s a season standout.”

The Cher Show

“I got to see it in New York with four lifelong girlfriends – it was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The performance was fantastic and portrayed Cher in several stages of her career, and there were some very clever moments used on stage to tell her story.”

Music

JOHNNY CASH – The Official Concert Experience

“I’m really excited to see this show about the life and music of Johnny Cash, one of Arkansas’ own. Performance footage of Cash along with a live band on stage will give those of us who didn’t get a chance to see him live a very special performance

Follow us on social media for more show announcments, behindthe-scenes looks, theater tips and tricks and more!

Dance & Comedy

Ailey II

“Ailey II is a fine American dance company. They have performed at Walton Arts Center previously, and they were inspiring. Our community will love seeing a company that dances the work developed by the great American choreographer, Alvin Ailey.”

The Comedy Zone

“This new comedy series is in our intimate Starr Theater and will feature some of the best rising comics in the country. We all need to laugh and have some fun, and this will be just the ticket!”

experience. We all know these songs and Johnny’s story thanks to some recent movies about him. But this experience will be part concert, part documentary – and we will be the first audience to see this production.”

The Music of Sam Cooke

“We actually had this show on the schedule last year, but it was canceled at the last minute due to a snowstorm. This decision was made after the band had already set and begun sound check, so I know how good they will be!”

Jeff

Trio

“Covering the breadth and diversity of jazz styles can be a challenge with only a six-concert series, but the Starrlight Jazz season makes a formidable stab at it this year with fusion jazz superstar, Jeff Lorber, making his debut appearance at Walton Arts Center. Over the course of 42 years and 24 albums, Lorber is an acknowledged pioneer of what would later become known as ‘smooth jazz’ and ‘urban jazz,’ weaving together elements of funk, R&B, rock and electric jazz into an appealing hybrid that has consistently won over listeners from coast to coast and resulted in several No. 1 radio hits.”

Friends Experience New York’s Vibrant Arts and Culture Scene

This past spring, 31 Walton Arts Center Friends and staff members took on the Big Apple for a whirlwind week of performances, sightseeing and fine dining! The group got to experience six of the hottest musicals on Broadway, including 2023 Tony® nominees Some Like It Hot, Sweeney Todd and & Juliet, as well as a once-in-alifetime performance by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The trip was filled with tours of iconic New York City destinations, including Ellis Island, the Museum of Broadway and The Morgan Library & Museum.

Guests also enjoyed behind-the-scenes time with arts industry leaders. They visited with touring Broadway professionals who shared insight into what it takes to make a great touring show, spent time in the studio with artists as they were rehearsing and shared an

evening of dinner and jazz, hosted in the home of world-renowned musicians Amina Figarova and Bart Platteau.

This annual travel opportunity is designed to be unforgettable for both frequent and first-time New York City visitors.

“The Vienna Philharmonic was absolutely the icing on an already perfect cake and something I will never forget,” said one traveler. “The trip was amazing!” Another guest shared, “Across the board it was a spectacular and unique experience for us all.”

Corporate Leadership Council

Supporting the Mission of Walton Arts Center

The annual Masquerade Ball has become a crucial part of Walton Arts Center’s capacity for expanding arts access as the event has raised more than $1 million to support the nonprofit’s arts education programming. Masquerade Ball wouldn’t be possible without a special group of business leaders from more than 30 of the region’s most influential brands who are dedicated to supporting the arts and giving back to the community.

These philanthropists make up the Corporate Leadership Council, which helms the signature event and is committed to the three C’s of its mission: connecting community with professional and social networking opportunities, enhancing culture in the region and engaging children by raising money to support arts education.

“CLC members are a diverse group of business leaders spanning different industries in NWA,” explains Todd Hanus, senior vice president U.S. Sales for Loacker USA, Inc. Hanus has been a CLC member for nearly a decade, ever since he arrived in Northwest Arkansas. “The main function of the council is to develop programs, like the annual Masquerade Ball, to generate funds to enable amazing student experiences at Walton Arts Center. Being part of the CLC is also a great way to share ideas and to create new business networks. We’re always looking for new and passionate members!”

Since its opening in 1992, Walton Arts Center has been a resolute advocate for serving both teachers and students through integrated arts instruction. By increasing professional development for teachers and teaching artists, developing programming that aligns with state curriculum and striving to provide access to arts

field trips to every student in Northwest Arkansas, Walton Arts Center has proven itself a champion of equity in access to the arts and arts education. In a typical season, the organization serves more than 30,000 students and teachers through the classroom series, in-school residencies, hands-on workshops, teacher professional development and more. And because of the CLC’s work and generous sponsors, we can offer most of our school programming at low or no cost.

“The main function of the council is to develop programs, like the annual Masquerade Ball, to generate funds to enable amazing student experiences at Walton Arts Center.”

“I have a passion for the arts and working with the CLC,” Hanus says. “We provide resources so that school-age children can have free or very low-cost access to the arts. It’s been proven that children’s exposure to the arts helps them in all aspects of their education. I feel fortunate to be part of an organization that makes a difference in our communities.”

Those interested in contributing to the community in a meaningful way by joining the CLC and expanding access to the arts for children in Northwest Arkansas can contact Kyle May at kmay@waltonartscenter.org.

Classroom Series

Bringing Kids to the Theater

Northwest Arkansas is full of wonderful arts organizations and experiences, but not everyone can afford to attend a performance. Now, through the Classroom Series, students and teachers in our region can attend a matinee show at Walton Arts Center for free thanks to the generous support of our sponsors.

“This is what most people commonly think of as our field trip program,” said Sallie Zazal, director of learning and engagement. “It includes performances for school groups to attend during the school day. We have a little bit of everything, from dance to music to plays, and the programs offered are for learners of all ages and abilities.” Variety and accessibility are key to the Classroom Series because Walton Arts Center’s goal is to build a community where every child participates in high-quality arts experiences both in and out of school.

“Teachers and students love Walton Arts Center,” Zazal said. “We have one of the largest classroom series programs in the nation. Many performing arts centers our size offer just a few titles each season for student groups. Because access to the arts for all students has been a goal of our organization from the start, we now serve more than 30,000 students from nearly 90 schools annually just as a part of the Classroom Series.”

Arts field trips are about more than leaving campus to see a performance or exhibition, they are a chance to participate in hands-on, experiential learning. When students have the opportunity to learn through the lens of the arts, they develop critical thinking, collaboration and creative skills necessary to succeed in our rapidly changing world. Through field trips, students build social capital and community connections by exploring institutions like ours.

In addition to free performances, schools can get help with transportation costs to get students to the theater. The J.B. Hunt Transportation Inc. bussing subsidy helps schools attend Walton Arts Center events and performances by supporting a portion of the bussing costs. The amount awarded is based on each school’s distance from the venue and how many students participate.

What inspired you to become a Walton Arts Center Friend?

The arts are very important to us as a family. One of the first things we did after moving to Northwest Arkansas was become subscribers at Walton Arts Center. While at the new subscriber open house, we had a lovely discussion with the staff and learned more about the venue and the Friends program. They shared fun examples of work they are doing in the community and with local schools. We saw how they engaged with our boys and could easily imagine the impact the Friends program has on others. We were convinced after the visit that this was something we wanted to support.

What is the biggest benefit of being a Friend?

Arts and theater have given so much to our lives. We love the discussions it sparks as a family, how it broadens our perspectives and inspires our creativity and thoughts. By supporting the Friends program, we are excited that others get the chance to have the same spark in their lives.

Light the Way!

How does it make you feel to know that your contribution helps further arts education and shares transformative experiences with students, educators and the community?

We believe that the performing arts and theater are critical to a vibrant community full of tradition and culture. We love that the program helps bring exciting experiences to students and the broader community that may otherwise not have this exposure. Knowing that we can contribute fills us with joy and excitement and we are honored to support the community we love.

Friends help Walton Arts Center share the transformative experience of the arts with tens of thousands of students, educators and community members each year. Your gift lights the way for important initiatives like access to the arts for all, arts education, educator programs and community outreach. Everyone knows it only takes a spark, so make a Friends gift today to inspire the stars of tomorrow at waltonartscenter.org/friends.

Friends also get exciting benefits like:

+ Concessions discounts

+ Invitations to exclusive Friends events

+ Access to complimentary beverages and snacks in our Friends Lounge

+ Reserved parking

And more!
