Tips for Audience Members

Welcome to Walton Arts Center! Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. What do I need to know? Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Some performances may have an intermission. Some may be recorded live. Need help? Check our website prior to arriving, or ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be

unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons in the theater, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater.

Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has

indicated otherwise – and please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show.

When concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a

first-come, first-served basis at Coat Check in the main lobby. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices.

We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility.

Learning Through the Arts

Learning through the Arts

Walton Arts Center is your classroom beyond the classroom, where extraordinary arts experiences help students reach important education goals. Our partner and resident studio arts organization Community Creative Center (CCC) is proud to offer the Stage to Studio program for a third year. Through Stage to Studio, students attend a Colgate Classroom Series performance at Walton Arts Center followed by a hands-on studio arts workshop that explores themes and learning standards related to the performance. Thanks to a grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation, the workshop,

along with lunch and a bussing subsidy, is provided at no cost to schools that serve student populations where more than 60 percent receive free and reduced lunches. For more information about arts education research and advocacy at Walton Arts Center, visit waltonartscenter.org

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart May 6-8, 2016

Pull up a chair and whet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on. Inspired by the border ballads — and delivered in a riotous romp of rhyming couplets, devilish encounters and wild karaoke — a dream-like journey of self-discovery unfolds among and around the audience. Come share the stage with five talented actor/musicians who radiate authenticity in a demanding performance that exudes a terrific, inventive sense of fun – and join us as we celebrate the reopening of Starr Theater with this unforgettable night out!

Artosphere Festival Orchestra

SPIN

This May: The Artosphere Festival returns! Join us May 12-27, 2016 as Walton Arts Center presents the 7th Annual Artosphere Festival. Providing a creative framework to discuss issues of sustainability, the festival features both free and ticketed events throughout Northwest Arkansas. A highlight of the festival is the Artosphere Festival Orchestra (AFO), now in its sixth year, under the baton of Music Director Corrado Rovaris. Having been recognized as an important classical music voice by American Public Media’s Performance Today — the nation’s most popular classical music radio program — AFO brings musicians from distinguished symphonies and music programs around the world together to celebrate the convergence of art, music and nature. This season, the Artosphere Festival Orchestra will perform three concerts: the opening performance on May 21 featuring Russian masterworks by Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky; the 10x10 Arts Series finale concert on May 24 with performances of works by Beethoven and Schnyder, featuring The Dover Quartet; and Live from

Crystal Bridges: Mozart in the Museum on May 27, which will be broadcast live on KUAF 91.3 FM Public Radio. The May 21 and May 24 concerts take place at Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Hall.

Other Artosphere Festival Highlights: SPIN | May 12-13

Part indie music concert, part performance poetry, part history lesson, SPIN celebrates the bicycle as muse, musical instrument and agent of social change. Inspired by the incredible true story of the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle, SPIN features a vintage bike hooked up to simple electronics and played as a brilliant accompaniment to the magnetic songs and monologues at the heart of this performance. waltonartscenter.org | 29

A tale of three birds...and an egg! With a simple storyline and the use of creative light and sound combined with cleverly conceived props, Egg investigates the cycle of life of newly hatched birds. Told through physical theater, illusion and music, this heart-wrenching, funny and delightful story explores the theme of ‘flying the nest’ – drawing children in close to the lives of the little bird characters in their nest and telling them a story of friendship, wonder and tender, loving care.

Mavis Staples & Nick Lowe March 12, 2016

For six decades, Mavis Staples has been the solid rock of American music, carving a distinctive and unmistakable path in popular music. Nick Lowe made his mark in music as a producer and legendary English singer-songwriter whose own compositions include “Cruel to Be Kind” and “What's So Funny About Peace, Love And Understanding.” Be one of the first to see these two musical giants perform together (and separately) in a concert that’s guaranteed to make rock ‘n’ roll history!

PROUD TO SUPPORT THE WALTON ARTS CENTER

Foundation Support The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust Supports Digging Up Arkansas

Thanks to the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust for supporting Walton Arts Center’s 2015-2016 Digging Up Arkansas statewide tour. Digging Up Arkansas is an original play produced by Walton Arts Center through a partnership with playwright and educator, Mike Thomas and Trike Theatre. It tells the story of three writers from the Federal Writer’s Project who invite students to investigate and classify historic artifacts before President Roosevelt’s scheduled arrival in Arkansas in 1936. Since the play began touring in 2010, over 42,000 3rd – 5th grade students have engaged with Arkansas history through this high quality, arts-rich program. This year will conclude a multi-year

partnership with the Arkansas Community Foundation to reach every county in the state. With the additional support from the Sturgis Charitable Trust, we will meet this goal and serve another 5,000 students in at least 20 counties across the state this year. All performances and resources are offered free of cost to schools. What a wonderful way to engage Arkansas youth in our state’s rich past! The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust joins the following funders, grantors and state agencies in contributing more than $2.4 million dollars to support arts education, programming and general operations during Walton Arts Center’s 2015-16 Season. Thank you!
